Hopefully by the time you read this, barbecue weather will be well upon us and we’ll all be basking in the glorious sunshine! Fingers crossed! But come rain or shine, there’s plenty going on in the borough this season. This issue is packed with exclusive celebrity interviews including comedian Ed Byrne and Last of the Summer Wine actress Jean Fergusson. JEAN FERGUSSON
Style caught up with actress Jean Fergusson; a familiar face from the much-loved BBC series Last of the Summer Wine and more recently, Coronation Street. Jean played man-mad Marina in Last of the Summer Wine for over a quarter of a century, where her portrayal of the biking bombshell soon won her the hearts of viewers‌ and of course, good old Howard! 8

What was it like to work alongside such legendary actors as Peter Sallis and Bill Owen? I loved doing scenes with Peter and Bill. Bill always used to find a moment to put his head down my blouse!! It was great fun. I got on with them both very well.
How did you first get into acting? I was doing my A-Levels in Bridgend, South Wales, when I heard about a very nice Amateur Dramatic Society down there so I decided to join! They were doing a production of The Crucible by Arthur Miller and I was just playing someone in the courtroom. Then the lady who was playing the lead of Abigail announced she was pregnant and couldn’t carry on with the part, so the producer asked me if I would take over. So at aged 17, and in my very first amateur show, I was lucky enough to play the lead role, which was absolutely wonderful… and I got the bug! Who is your inspiration? Sir Ralph Richardson – I thought he was the bee’s knees! A wonderful and gentle, subtle actor.
Which Last of the Summer Wine scene or episode was your most memorable? In 28 years there were an awful lot! I think the most memorable episode was after Bill Owen passed away and the writer Roy Clarke wrote three special episodes, which had a mixture of comedy and tragedy. Bill had died in between one block of filming and the next, so Roy had to think very quickly; he decided to incorporate Compo’s death into the episodes, which was a brave thing to do. There was one scene where the whole cast were told we had to go out to this hillside, because there was a final message to Compo, but we weren’t told what it was. I’ll never forget the moment; Edie (Thora Hird) was in her car, I was riding behind on my bike, Howard was with Pearl; we were all in various vehicles going around this huge mountain path. We went around the corner and on the hillside was written ‘See ya Compo’. On a television screen you couldn’t grasp the enormity of it. There were hundreds of people, all dressed in white overalls, lying on the hillside and spelling out the letters. The Last of the Summer Wine music played and the mass of people walked
away, dissolving into the hillside. It was genius. We didn’t even do a rehearsal; we just had to do it cold and see it as it really was, so it was true emotion. We were all in tears, as obviously we were saying goodbye to Bill as well. What was it like to be part of such a well loved series? It was wonderful. And it’s still out there on channels like Gold and Yesterday. We were top of the ratings so often and won a National Television Award. Fans still write and ask why they axed it! To be honest I’m not sure why the BBC axed Summer Wine, Heartbeat, or lots of those lovely, popular shows. Did you get to keep Marina's wig or bicycle?! I got it all! The wig, the costume, the bikes! Only because we didn’t know the show was ending and the producer had always wanted me to look after Marina’s clothes. The first bike that I ever had in the 80s hung in my garage in Yorkshire for years, as I had asked the whole cast to sign it. Unfortunately, I didn’t have anywhere to keep it when I recently moved to London, so I auctioned it to raise money for charity. Do you prefer theatre or television? Oh I love both… such different skills are involved. Theatre is more exciting, having contact with the live audience. My theatre background prepared me for Last of the Summer Wine, as I did weekly rep, fortnightly rep and tours. What was it like to grace the cobbles of Coronation Street a few years ago, as Dorothy Hoyle, in the major John Stape storyline? I had been a big fan of Coronation Street since it started and it was great to work with many old friends; I knew the late Anne Kirkbride (Deirdre) when she was 16 and Barbara Knox (Rita) and I shared a dressing room at Oldham Rep in the 60s! I would have loved to stay in Coronation Street but I had a wonderful year and storyline. What advice would you give to aspiring actors? If you desperately want to act… and not just be famous… then don’t give up. You have to be able to accept the pitfalls and insecurities when you don’t get the part. But if you’re determined, just keep going.

TOPLOADER Pop rock band Toploader are in town for the Rochdale Feel Good Festival this summer. With a string of top 20 singles including ‘Achilles Heel’, ‘Only for a While’ and ‘Time of My Life’ they are best known for their global hit ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’. The band will be taking to the stage for a free show on Saturday 5th September. Their triple-platinum debut album ‘Onkas’ Big Moka’ was followed up by ‘The Magic Hotel’ which reached number three in the charts in 2002 and their total album sales already exceed two million.

In 2013 they released ‘This Is The Night’ which reached number one in the Radio 2 Airplay Chart and ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ re-entered the Top 40 for another three weeks, cementing it as one of the biggest songs of recent times.
Renowned worldwide as a crowdpleasing live festival band, four times Brit Award nominated Toploader have played all the major festivals including Glastonbury, V-Festival and T in the Park as well as supporting the likes of Paul Weller, Robbie Williams and Bon Jovi, where they became the last British band to play the original Wembley Stadium.
Rochdale Feel Good Festival returns on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September, for its eighth year, with organisers promising another incredible showcase of entertainment, food and culture. There will be live music across indoor venues, a main stage against the backdrop of the town hall and a community stage. Celebrity chefs will host live cooking demonstrations throughout the event, which will also include the popular food market.

I think all bands evolve and that was 15 years ago now. As you get older your tastes and influences as a musician change. Do you still love playing ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ or have you heard it a few too many times?!

It's a fun time of year for us as we get to go out and do what we love doing. There's something really nice about playing in the open air with the sun shining.

We've been very lucky as a band and there have been so many but hearing 'Achilles Heel' on the radio for the first time was a very proud moment. What has been your biggest gig to date?

I remember passing my cycling proficiency test at Hartley Lane Junior School in 1962, and since those days I have always had a bike. I now only use it for venturing down quiet lanes around Norden with the occasional encounter onto a main road. I was a little skeptical of the electric bike, not really seeing the point or need for assistance in pedal power. When Chris Paulson Cycles on Yorkshire Street, Rochdale loaned me one for the weekend I thought I would put it to the test. After riding the UCL-10, I was surprised by how much like a normal bike it was. What’s more, the extra power helps you ride with a bit more confidence. Our roads are now very busy… you don’t get much time or space to navigate when you’re on two wheels. So, unless you're an experienced rider, it can be quite nerve wracking. In heavy traffic having that extra little bit of poke to get you out of trouble can be very reassuring. Being able to pull away from traffic lights without wobbling, and having that extra little bit of push you need to get you up hills really increases your confidence on the road. In eco mode, the fully charged UCR-10 gives you 30-40 miles of range, so that’s plenty to last you the day, even on long commutes. The bike gives you different modes of cycling assistance, the more assistance you get, the lower the range. I also like the fact that you can take the battery out of its holder and charge it indoors. Its top speed is 25km/h or 15.5 mph and that’s plenty for a short commute or a trip to the shops. The UCL is a really good way for people to ease back into cycling, particularly if they are older, a little unfit or just a tad nervous on a bike. At £899.99 it will set you back more than most conventional commuter bikes, but as its eligible to purchase through the Government’s Cycle to Work scheme, you can spread the cost to help make it more affordable. EBCO bikes come with a five-year frame warranty, and one year for parts and battery. The battery is, they say, expected to withstand around 500 charge cycles before it starts to lose significant capacity – so about two years in daily use. This ‘low step’ frame makes it far easier to get on and off the bike, making it a great choice for commuters riding into work wearing their office clothes. ASCOT AT NUTTERS
The annual ‘Ascot at Nutters’ event, in its eleventh year, was attended by 149 supporters of the NSPCC, with ladies dressing to impress as if they were at Ascot for the races. Organised by Bob Chadwick and The Rotary Club of Rochdale, the event raised £18,500 for the NSPCC and its School Service.

NORMAN EVANS The name Norman Evans may be obscure these days to some Style readers. Many of us will only know him as a big influence on Les Dawson in the latter’s double act of Cissie and Ada with Roy Barraclough, but Norman was a lot more. His character of Fanny Fairbottom in a sketch called ‘Over The Garden Wall’ can still be seen on YouTube. This hilarious portrayal of a Lancastrian housewife gossiping with an invisible neighbour is a timeless classic. His other most celebrated routine, the Dentist, (where he plays both patient and dentist) shows that Norman’s talents were far greater than being merely a female impersonator. This sketch can also be seen on YouTube.

In April 1955, Norman was driving back to his home in Blackpool and a cat ran across in front of his car. The car swerved to avoid hitting the animal and mounted the pavement, crashing into a lamp standard. Norman was seriously injured and lost his right eye. His first reaction was apparently to ask his wife Annie, “Will my face ever be funny again?” Hundreds of get well messages and flowers were sent to the hospital, reflecting both Norman’s massive popularity, but also the genuine sympathy that the public had for this comedian at this difficult time.
Norman was born on 11th June 1901 and lived at 5 Ventnor Street in Rochdale, before the family moved to nearby Pullman Street. Norman’s father, Frank, worked for Rochdale Council as Assistant Overseer of the Poor. There was a strong Methodist tradition in the family; Frank’s father was a church minister for forty years and Frank was an organist for many years. As a young man, Norman himself was a local preacher.
Norman had attended Castlemere Central School and then went to work at a local solicitor’s office. He soon gave up this job and worked at Arrow Mill as an office boy for five shillings a week, later joining paper tube manufacturers, Swailes Ltd, as a commercial representative. Throughout this time Norman performed in many productions by Rochdale Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, as well as being a member of the Corruptimists pierrot troupe.
Norman was greatly encouraged by Gracie Fields who had seen him perform at a charity show at Rochdale Hippodrome where she was topping the bill. Soon he switched full time to a stage career and was an overnight hit at London’s Alhambra
Theatre. After only three years in the entertainment business, Norman was the opening act at the Royal Variety Performance of 1937.
Norman appeared at the Royal Variety Performance on two more occasions, once at the London Palladium and once at the Victoria Palace. Norman’s real love was playing the Dame in the uniquely British tradition of pantomime. He set a record in the 1944-1945 season when starring in Humpty-Dumpty at the Theatre Royal in Leeds for no less than 22 weeks! In 1949 he even appeared on American television’s Ed Sullivan Show, which often showcased the best British performers.
In 1950 a film called Over The Garden Wall was released. Produced by Rusholmebased Mancunian Films, it starred Norman with Jimmy James, another famous northern comedian. The film may seem primitive to modern viewers with its largely single camera work and ‘set pieces’ which were basically music hall sketches acted out in a studio, but it gives us a priceless insight into Norman’s talent. It is available on DVD.
Nevertheless, within only eight weeks, Norman was back on stage performing. He returned to his hometown on many occasions, visiting his old school and workplaces, as well as appearing in a special week of variety shows in 1958 to help celebrate the borough’s centenary year. Norman appeared on BBC TV with his own programmes The Norman Evans Show and Evans Abode and continued to do pantomimes and variety.
Norman’s physical health was not good after the accident and he sadly died aged only 61 in 1962. He had been taken ill at home in Blackpool with bronchial pneumonia and died a week later in the Devonshire Road Hospital.
At Norman’s funeral the minister said, “ I believe that it was in the providence of God that the stage, the microphone and the television screen became the pulpit through which he preached the gospel of happiness and friendliness.”
Norman Evans is buried in Blackpool’s Carleton Cemetery where, appropriately, the headstone of his grave is a low wall. His epitaph reads “Norman’s last garden wall!” Check out Norman’s appearances on YouTube and you will see the inspiration behind not only Cissie and Ada, but also, arguably, Dame Edna and Mrs Brown.

DOES YOUR MONEY GO AS FAR AS IT USED TO?
A few weeks ago, I came across the receipt for a family car purchased in April 1990. It was made out for £9,995 in exchange for a gleaming new Nissan Bluebird 1.6 LX. This got me thinking… adding inflation, that car cost the equivalent of a touch over £20k in today’s money, but what does that same £10k get you brand new in the current marketplace?
VAUXHALL CORSA In 1990, the Nissan Bluebird was on its way out with the new Primera biting at its heels, but today £9,775 will buy a brand new Vauxhall Corsa, only a few months out of the design studio. Admittedly, it will only get you into a base model 5-door 1.2-litre sting edition. But base models are nothing like those of the past, the Sting includes all the refinements you expect in today’s day and age, along with features such as cruise control and a USB compatible CD player. The Corsa is a car which has looked better with each 26
generation, culminating in this latest incarnation which is as good-looking in real life as it is in the carefully choreographed advertisements. The cabin is nicely styled with a very modern feel and has been designed to compete with the market-leading Ford Fiesta. It’s also the Fiesta that is the benchmark for the driving experience too. So keen are Vauxhall to match their traditional rival that they have given the new Corsa a unique set up for UK roads, which although feels great around town, can be a bit twitchy at speed.
DACIA DUSTER I remember the Bluebird was bought as it was the largest car available for the budget at the time, and today the best value in terms of amount of car per £ is the Dacia Duster. £9,495 gets you the petrol 1.6-litre Access model in any colour you like so long as it is white. This SUV body is purely for looks, as the drive is provided through the front wheels only. There is a charm at this level of basicness; people buy this car as they would a dishwasher - it cleans the pots and will therefore do for me. The cabin is once again, minimalist in its decadence with huge swathes of plastic trim but at this price you cannot expect leather and alcantara trim. Don’t get excited about any toys either, think yourself lucky you have power steering and electric front windows. Want a stereo? That will be an optional extra… Out on the road it does exactly what it says on the tin, it will get you where you are going but the ride wallows a bit, although this does soak up bumps nicely. The engine is eager though, and feels remarkably sprightly in a car this size; economy is reasonable even with a five-speed gearbox.
KIA RIO The bluebird was purchased by my grandfather as Nissan had, at the time, a bullet-proof reputation for reliability, and this being his “retirement car” was bought to last. Many people talk about the fact modern cars are almost built to be a disposable item, but Kia is bucking that trend with their comprehensive seven-year warranty. The Rio is equivalent in size to the Corsa but is generally aimed at a different demographic to the Vauxhall. I have to admit I have cheated at this point. The Base Rio is priced at £10,145, but the first dealer I rang said straight away they would be willing to accommodate a discount to under the £10k budget and hinted an even better deal would be available if I went down to talk to them face-to-face. This is a good package for the money; the 83bhp 1.25-litre petrol engine is lively and stays nicely on the power throughout the rev range, whilst the handling is set up tight enough to be engaging but without the need to employ the services of a chiropractor every time the council miss a pothole.
So whether it is style, space, or peace of mind you want, there is a choice of buying a factory fresh car without breaking the bank. Once you get in the showroom, the dealers will try to tempt with all sorts of add-ons and the option to upgrade, but unless there are features in the package you really want or need, remember to Keep It Simple for the best value. It’s all in the eyes… Another huge trend that hit the catwalks is winged liner; in an array of colours, models strutted up and down the catwalk donning fabulous feline eyes. Winged eyeliner is a little tricky and it does take practice, but once perfected can really change the shape of your eye. The width of the liner alters the size of the flick taking your look from daytime, to 50’s pin up, to sexy and sultry. It’s not a look that can be achieved without the right tools however, so you will need to invest in a good quality fine angled liner brush (these don’t have to cost the earth, prices start from as little as £13 for a professional brush). You will also need a good quality liner in either black or brown to start with as these colours suit most, if not all complexions, and flatter any skin tone. Once you are comfortable creating your feline flicks you can go bold… maybe try a colbolt blue or teal green… be experimental and have fun.
So many women fake it! With so many outdoor pursuits to be enjoyed this season it’s important to stay safe. Whether you are attending Ascot for champagne and strawberries, or getting down and dirty at a festival it’s important that you protect yourself from harmful rays. This is often something we fail to do in the UK because we don’t envisage that temperatures could reach the dangerous heights of the Mediterranean, but as I sit writing this feature I have my window open and the temperature outside is a scorching 24 degrees. UV rays can give us a lovely tan, something we all crave, but it does come with consequences. Harmful rays from the sun can cause premature ageing of the skin, hyper pigmentation and of course, skin cancer. My advice is to wear a big hat to shade your upper body, use a high factor SPF sun protection and re-apply throughout the day. I recommend Soleil Plasir by Darphin Paris £29 – an exquisitely silken cream with Karanja oil, and skin texturizing Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin E. Don’t obsess over having tanned skin… fake it till you make it! I promise that with professional application and advice your tan will look unbelievable and you will be the envy of all your friends. I would recommend a spray tan by St Tropez or if you prefer an at home DIY tan why not try a user friendly self tan from the large range St Tropez have to offer? They helped the appeal raise £2,300 towards buying a £250,000 tandem mass spectrometer for screening newborn babies for the Willink Unit at The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. A traditional British dinner of tomato soup, roast beef and strawberries and cream was served, before guests danced the night away.

A FAMILY AFFAIR Frank Blakeley & Son Ltd was established in 1950 by the man himself, supplying textile machinery accessories, in particular, parts for shuttles. The premises were initially opposite St. Luke's Parish Church on York Street, Heywood. Style Magazine went to find out how it all began and meet four generations of the Blakeley family! After leaving school in Manchester, Frank Blakeley worked at a business which supplied equipment for many well-known golfers, but at the outbreak of war the firm transferred him to their weaving shuttle making factory in Heywood, where he became the Export Manager, dealing with countries far and wide.
Early in 1950, a customer came from New Zealand and complained of poor service, suggesting that if Frank were to set up his own business dealing in shuttles and allied items, he would send him all his orders.
This was a very big challenge to consider but in September 1950 the business of Frank Blakeley was set up in a small way and, optimistically, many new avenues and outlets would come forth. It wasn’t easy without a convenient warehouse but in a few years, things were falling into place and became a bit easier with the help of a good packer and Margaret, Frank’s wife, as secretary.
In the early 60's he moved into a three-storey mill on Rock Street at the Hopwood end of Heywood. Margaret commented: “All the time we had been developing the export and import of weaving loom shuttles and allied parts and Frank made long trips to Switzerland, Egypt, India and Hong Kong to discuss business. We had long been importing shuttle jaws from Switzerland and Austria and eyes from Germany and Italy, visiting many times.”
Unfortunately Frank died in 1964 and Margaret, carried on the business. Frank's son Nick joined the company in 1976 but by this time a change of direction was necessary. Margaret added: “The textile trade began to lose out because manufacture was being set up by India; trade here was definitely suffering. There had been 42 shuttle makers inthe British Isles and I believe there is only one in Todmorden now.”
One of the company's suppliers suggested engineering supplies as there were so many small to medium sized shops in Heywood alone. Nick chose to diversify and turn his efforts to building up an entirely new business for Frank Blakeley.
Three years later Nick's brother, Adrian, joined the business as things had really started to take off. The early eighties saw a move

down to Miller Street to Rhodes Mill, as much more room was needed for expansion. By this time there were about ten staff but things soon went from strength to strength. The firm grew until again more space was needed, as by this time they were doing a lot more than just Engineering Supplies.
Fortunately in 1998, the mill around the corner became available so the move was much less stressful than the one from Rock Street. Since then, the company has acquired another branch in Leyland and now boasts fifty staff. In recent times they have installed a Kardex stock control machine
and a brand new, state-of-the-art computer system along with a personalised clothing department.
Margaret commented: “As time elapsed, without initially fully intending to do so, several members of our ever extending family have joined the company. Nick's’ wife, Barbara, came to help in the office and their daughter Alex came in l988 to begin a long and efficient career – I finally decided it was time to hand over to new ideas and computers at the age of 68 in 1990! Nick and Barbara’s two sons James & Richard have also joined. James is now Works
Director at Heywood while Richard is in charge at our Leyland branch. And now I have great grandchildren who have learnt the ins and outs of the business – Joshua and Jessica – and even Joshua’s fiancée, Sarah. Grandson, Ben, is a salesman. Will there be a fifth generation?!” Margaret added: “I think Frank must be looking down on us and saying ‘I made a brave move so long ago and it has thankfully born much fruit’.” the company are planning an open Day on 28th august to mark 65 years!

Sarah’s Epic Challenge – Sarah Bagley is a local RSPCA Inspector and raised money by swimming two miles across Lake Windermere, cycling 140 miles coast to coast then running 18 miles. Read her story on the National RSPCA website and you can still sponsor her on her Virgin Money Giving page. A big ‘thank you’ also for funds raised at Clara’s Coffee Morning. Clara was a chicken recently adopted from us and her new owner raised £163 at a coffee morning held at Holt Mill Support Services in Whitworth.

Weds 15th July - The Alan Bracewell Big Band Night at the Pack Horse Inn, Elbut Lane, Birtle. The band have kindly agreed to put on an evening at the Packhorse Inn to raise money for our animal centre in Rochdale. The 16 piece dance band (Glenn Miller style) will play outside (weather permitting). You could have a tasty meal in the restaurant and listen to the music play - you'll soon be tapping your toes along to the beat! There is no entrance fee but there will be a raffle to raise RSPCA funds. Last year’s event was a great success and we hope to repeat it this year. Sat 25th July - Littleborough Rushbearing Festival. We will be having a stall in Hare Hill Park selling RSPCA goods and pet treats.

Washing Machine Appeal – With the amount of washing an animal centre has to tackle, we really need two large usable washing machines. Only one of our machines works and volunteers have been taking some of the washing home. One of those volunteers, Barbara, undertook a walk along the Rochdale Canal from Manchester to Todmorden on 25th June to raise funds. An industrial size washing machine can cost £1,200! There are some lovely cats, kittens and rabbits in the animal centre on Redcross Street waiting for loving new homes. There is nothing cuter than a little kitten or a puppy but there are just too many. It is so important to have your pet neutered or spayed to protect the health of your cat and avoid unwanted litters.
If you feel you would like to volunteer for the RSPCA there are opportunities in our shops in Todmorden, Littleborough, Milnrow, Heywood, Middleton, Castleton and Rochdale Yorkshire Street or Oldham Road. Volunteering opportunities occur also in the animal centre.
Victor - This beautiful cat had been hit by a car and was rushed to the vet by a kind hearted passer-by. The cat was bleeding from his eye, nose and mouth, had blood in his lungs, head trauma and a broken upper and lower jaw. OUTSTANDING AWARD
Rochdale based business woman Julie Bowmer recently picked up the award for Outstanding Woman in Business at the E3 Business Awards in June.
Julie has majority interest in three businesses situated in Rochdale, TBD Associates, Baker Bennett and The Business Depot. There is also a fourth business TrailerTeq – Mechanical Engineering which is situated near Leyland, all of which come under the group umbrella Likahea Holdings. It is this diversity, the ongoing training of staff, along with the passion for the regeneration of her hometown that won her the award. The recent trophy is just the latest in a long line of accolades, which include a Rochdale Business Award and a Grocer Award with Tesco in 2015. She was also a
finalist in Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2013, North West Business Awards 2013 and 2014 and Skills for Business Awards 2014 and 2015. Unbelievably, Julie left school with no maths qualification, before heading to University as a mature student to study accountancy and finance. She is now a Chartered Management Accountant and fellow of the institute, who holds a Masters of Science degree in Predictive Business Analytics. After heading a management buyout of bakery distribution company Baker Bennett, Julie was instrumental in turning a ¼ million pound net loss into almost ½ million pound
net profit within five years. She is also the sole shareholder and managing director of Likahea Holdings which incorporates her majority shareholdings in a wide range of successful companies (ranging from distribution to IT). However, of these companies the 'apple of her eye' is TBD Associates, a boutique accountancy practice, with offices in Rochdale, Hove and Knutsford. Incorporated in 2006, the company has grown steadily year on year ever since, now servicing over 1400 clients. Julie’s most recent venture has been to team up with her son Liam and form The Business Depot. The company capitalises on Liam’s software writing background - as concept creator of gaming phenomenon Angry Birds - bringing in the simplicity of the front end of gaming with the complex structure that lies behind, the TBD portal. The portal is free to all management accounting clients, makes financial information more relevant for business people and easy-to-use on smart phones, PCs and iPads. The Business Depot also provides hosting services, helping businesses drastically reduce capital expenditure on IT equipment and software to ease cash flow and facilitate growth. Julie’s daughter, Katie also won the Junior Woman of Rochdale award last year, for her local business and fundraising efforts.

MURDER AT DEEM HOUSE ST ANN’S PLAYERS Murder at Deem House was written in 1980, however St Ann’s Players performed the play to a modern audience with great confidence in what was a very complicated plot. They were helped by the stage crew, who had built a very convincing interior of the period. There were some familiar faces on stage in this production and director Dave Stopford put together an experienced cast who certainly didn’t disappoint. The audience were certainly gripped by this production as the plot twisted and turned throughout the evening. The play, which is set in Deem House, revolves around nurses Rhona Iver and Gladys Boone, played by Judith Mansfield and Lynda Kent, who have been looking after old Mrs Deeming up to her death. When Mrs Deeming’s lawyer John Dudley arrives played by Clive Hartley to finalise the will we all think everything is going to plan… until we find he is fobbed off and consequently shot! The plot starts the first of its many twists and turns as we meet Flora the flirtatious maid, played by Annette Nodwell, who gets some well timed laughs. Joanne Frost bursts in as the jealous wife Sylvia Dudley with her usual stage presence, and when Dudley is shot Peter Dignan makes a convincing appearance as Superintendent Forrest, assisisted by his
dopey sidekick Kevin Lawman. Thrown into the mix is a seductive performance from Sue Howarth as Denise Talbot and Michaela Kitchen complements this strong company as Judy Donlan. The cast must be complimented on keeping up the excellent standard that is expected by a St Ann’s audience. STRASBERRY TARTS ORIGINALLY, A WILD STRAWBERRY SPECIES, THE BERRY WAS ON THE VERGE OF EXTINCTION BEFORE A DUTCH GROWER REDISCOVERED IT SEVEN YEARS AGO. THIS FRUIT HAS THE GENETIC MAKEUP OF A STRAWBERRY, BUT ALSO TASTES LIKE A RASPBERRY. AWESOME! FOR THE SWEET PASTRY 250g plain flour 90g icing sugar 120g butter 1 egg Pinch lemon zest METHOD 1) For the sweet pastry, in a food processor blend together the flour, sugar and butter until it forms a fine crumb. Add the egg and lemon and knead to a smooth dough, place in the fridge to firm slightly. 2) Lightly dust a work surface with some plain flour and roll out the pastry thinly to about 2mm thick. Use to line 6 tart cases or alternatively make one large one. 3) Bake in a hot oven 180°c for about 5 minutes until lightly coloured and golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. 4) When ready to serve remove the venison from the food wrap and slice into thin slices – it should be charred on the outside but still very pink in the middle. 5) Arrange the venison on a plate served with your favourite salad leaves tossed in vinaigrette. Finish with a scattering of pink peppercorns, a drizzle of toasted sesame oil and a squeeze of fresh lime. LEMON CURD 3 egg yolks 2 eggs 75g caster sugar 95g lemon juice 60g butter 1) Whisk together the eggs and sugar. 2) In a saucepan, melt the butter and lemon juice and bring to the boil – add the egg mixture and simmer for 2-3 minutes, whisking all the time until smooth and thickened. 3) Remove from the heat and leave to cool. Fundraising events for 2015 are already off to a sensational start with the Hospice to Hospice Walk, Go Green and the Traditional Country Fete raising much needed funds. The Hospice to Hospice Walk again broke attendance records, with over 300 Springhill strollers walking the 7.25 miles circular route, calling in at Dr Kershaw's Hospice in Oldham. But the summer is far from over and with a couple more events before the nights get darker, Springhill are making sure that the whole community can join in the fundraising, with two lovely Hospice based events.
SATURDAY 25TH JULY will see the Hospice grounds transformed into a picture perfect picnic for the SUMMER SERENADE. Bring along a picnic, a blanket and some friends; sit back, relax and listen to the beautiful sounds of the Greater Manchester Police Male Voice Choir, Rochdale's Community Band and compere Ian Jenkins. The monies had been collected by the residents over a period of time, following various fundraising events and outings organised by their Social Committee. Anne Peacock, Social Secretary and Yvonne Kowalczuk, warden at Yew Court explained, “The residents have enjoyed very much their regular social events while at the same time raising monies for a very worthy local cause, Springhill Hospice”. Trustee Ken Davies expressed his pleasure on receiving the excellent donation from Yew Court and how proud the residents should be on their remarkable achievement.

The programme was a beautifully selected variety of music played on soprano and alto sax, accompanied by the ‘brilliant’ Leo Nicholson. The concert was sponsored by The Yearsley Group, Heywood, to which the committee is very grateful for their continued support. In the past twelve months the small committee of eleven ladies, have raised £13,500; with the concert raising £450.
ROCHDALE AIR CADETS DRESS TO IMPRESS
1263 Squadron Rochdale Air Cadets recently celebrated their first formal dining in night for over 30 years at the Mercure Norton Grange Hotel in Rochdale. Strict dress regulations apply and these are carried over into the Squadron dinner. A disco was held for the cadets, along with a raffle and auction to raise funds for the Unit which eventually came to nearly £1100. The Squadron parades on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and potential new recruits are more than welcome. LITTLEBOROUGH TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

The speakers cover a wide range of subjects from "Introducing Tai Chi", through to historical talks about local iconic buildings, famous people including Edward Elgar, L.S. Lowry, Clarice Cliff et al; demonstrations of 'fibre art', how to make soap, glass bead jewellery… the list is endless! Occasionally they also hold 'in house' evenings, when they might have a fish ‘n’ chip supper and quiz, musical or craft evenings, along with annual Christmas and birthday parties. Littleborough TG (Townswomen's Guild) is a group of around 50 ladies of all ages who meet every Wednesday at 7.30pm at the Coach House. The TG is a national organisation with around 700 groups; however, Littleborough is almost unique in that they meet weekly, as most TGs only meet once a month. They usually have a guest speaker, followed by time for a cup 64

The group is always delighted to welcome new members of any age, or from any area. They hold regular fundraising events and in the recent past have supported several worthy causes including the Osteoporosis Society, the Christie Hospital Manchester, Petrus and the Air Ambulance North West.
