ROCHDALE TOWN CENTRE IS ALIVE AFTER FIVE Rochdale is quickly building a reputation for quality food and drink with its vast selection of welcoming pubs, bars and restaurants.

Rochdale’s newest bar, the Garden, is also attracting a lot of attention for its unique decor and friendly atmosphere, offering craft beer, ciders, gin and delicious cocktails.

The ‘Alive After Five’ campaign aims to encourage a vibrant town centre after 5pm by promoting Rochdale’s wide variety of exciting food and drink outlets, all within a short walk of one another. Rochdalians and visitors from further afield have been flocking back into the town to sample the mouthwatering menus and award winning pubs and bars.

Paul Ambrose, Business Improvement District Manager, commented: “The town centre offer has never been so good. Things are going from strength to strength with the Garden opening recently and BombayBrew set to open this autumn. The Alive After Five campaign has proved a huge success so far and the town centre atmosphere is vibrant, with even more new establishments soon to be announced.”

There’s something for everyone; Mediterranean dishes at La Mancha, specialist wine and gin at Vicolo del Vino, an exciting and varied food menu, cask beers and delicious cocktails at The Medicine Tap, and well-loved pubs such as The Baum, the Regal Moon and Cask & Feather. And not forgetting The Flying Horse, which has retained its title of Greater Manchester’s Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale for a second year – putting pub amongst the top 16 in the UK.

This November also sees the return of Rochdale Ale Trail, back by popular demand, and featuring over 100 ales and ciders. Keep up to to date with town centre events, new openings and offers by visiting www.rochdaletowncentre.co.uk and following: /rochdaletowncentre

KEIRA

WALSH

Rochdale-born midfielder, Keira Walsh, became a first-team regular for Manchester City WFC during their 2014 campaign, playing a key role in the team securing the Continental Cup. Walsh went on to help City win the FA WSL title in 2016, the SSE Women’s FA Cup in 2017 and the Continental League Cup in 2019. In November 2017, Walsh was called up to the senior England Squad and captained her country at the age of just 21.

POSITION: MIDFIELDER

Earlier this year, she was part of the England team that won the SheBelieves Cup in the United States.

DOB: 8TH APRIL 1997 (22 YRS) HEIGHT: 5FT 6"

This summer, Keira was selected as part of Phil Neville's World Cup squad. The Lionesses plunged women's football into the spotlight, reaching the semifinal of a thrilling World Cup, with almost 12 million viewers tuning in to watch the dramatic match against the United States.

Style: Women’s football is more popular than ever after the excitement of the World Cup. How did it feel to be a part of the Lionesses this summer? It was incredible to be part of the World Cup team with England. It’s something I’ve dreamed about ever since I was little, so for that to happen, it was very surreal but an amazing experience. What was it like to find yourself in the spotlight? I didn’t really think about it too much to be honest, simply because we had so many games to focus on alongside the bigger picture of what we were trying to achieve! What was the most memorable moment of the World Cup for you? Probably stepping out for the first group game against Scotland which was my tournament debut and, of course, starting with a win!

© Getty Images

How did you first get into football? I first got into football by watching Manchester City on TV with my Dad he used to take me out on the field to practise passing and it all started from that really! Who were your biggest inspirations and favourite players growing up? My favourite players growing up were Camille Abily and David Silva (he still is!). I admired the way they played football and the way they could influence the game and their teammates.

© The FA

How did it feel to be reselected recently? It’s great to be back in and around the squad and it’s always an honour to be selected for your country. I think it was important that we all had time to reflect after the World Cup but as a team, we all have the same goals and are ready to start working towards them. Name three things you can’t live without when you’re on tour? That would have to be my iPad, my straighteners and my foam roller. Who is your roommate? Lucy Bronze, my ex-Manchester City teammate.

What’s the best thing about life as a full time pro at City? I get to do something that I love everyday at the club I’ve always supported.

How would you encourage more young people to take up sport? I would just tell them to go down to their local sports clubs and get involved. It’s a great way to make friends and most of the people I’ve met whilst playing football have been friends for life. What advice would you give to a young female footballer who wants to follow in your footsteps? Make sure you enjoy your journey and try not to overthink your future. You also need to trust your process and surround yourself with good people! Ruth Parkinson

What are your ambitions for the season? My ambitions for the season are to compete on all fronts domestically and be more consistent in the Champions League this season, starting with our games against Lugano in September. Do you still get nervous before a big game? Any pre-match rituals? I do still get nervous, especially before international matches when the crowds are a lot bigger and the pressure is on, but that soon disappears. My pre-game ritual is tying my shoe lace three times on my right foot! www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

"It's lovely being back with my Corrie family."

JENNIE MCALPINE

Images Š ITV Pictures

Coronation Street star Jennie McAlpine has been a familiar face on our screens for over 18 years, playing the feisty Fiz. The 35-year-old Rossendale actress recently returned to the cobbles, following her maternity leave, after welcoming her second born, Hilda, with husband Chris Farr. Style caught up with Jennie to discuss life on the world's longest running soap, following in Jack and Vera's footsteps, and why mental health awareness is a topic close to her heart... 10

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

mental wellbeing Style: How's life back on the cobbles after your maternity leave? Jennie: It’s lovely being back with my Corrie family. I was scared I would have forgotten how to do it, especially remembering lines! But after a day, it felt like I’d never been away. Has baby Hilda been on set? She’s been to visit a few times. I can’t really bring her to the set with me while I’m filming. I’m not sure she’d quite get the memo to be quiet! Any hints as to what is coming up for Fiz? Lots! It’s been a busy time since I’ve been back. We’ve had lots of scenes in the Dobbs house and that’s my favourite place to be. Evelyn is there giving her opinion on it all too!

Are Fiz and Tyrone the next Jack & Vera?! That is a huge compliment whenever it’s said to me and Al [Alan Halsall]. There’s absolutely only one Jack and Vera. It’s an honour to still be living in their house and filming around the table they filmed so many scenes at. I love it when they are talked about in the show. We must never lose that sense of history. Of the many scenes you’ve been involved in during your 18 years at Corrie, do you have an all-time favourite? That’s such a hard question. I love Tyrone and Fiz scenes as Alan Halsall is a real mate. He makes me laugh and it’s so easy and comfy doing those scenes. Also scenes with my little brother. I adore working with Sam and I do annoyingly treat him like my real little brother! And Roy. The storyline that touched people so much was Hayley’s death. It was an honour to be a part of those amazing scenes.

What do you think it is about Coronation Street that makes it so popular and the world's longest running soap? It is still as Tony Warren described it “peeping behind the net curtains”. Everyone loves to know what people are up to and keep up with the gossip. And Coronation Street gives us that. We’re focusing on mental wellbeing in this issue so we wanted to ask about your work/life balance. How are you finding life as a mum of two with such a busy career? It’s really hard work. If I’m honest there’s not many days when I think I’m getting it right. If I could have a parallel universe where I could be at work and at home I’d do that. But I can’t, so I try to get the best balance I can. And a good moan to other mums who understand is really helpful at times! Your father was a mental health advocate and received an OBE for his services to Moodswings, a mental health charity in Manchester. Are you involved in the charity yourself? Absolutely. My Dad was an amazing man who founded Moodswings all those years ago. The charity is opening a community cafe at the premises at New Mount Street in Manchester very soon. The cafe will help to support people into work and into a fulfilling place in the community. Something my Dad was so passionate about.

Regarding maternal mental health, is there any advice you would like to offer to new mums? Firstly, if you are struggling, don’t be alone. Talk to your GP or midwife. There is help and if things are tough you mustn’t face it alone. Being a new mum is an amazing thing, but also a really scary and isolating time. I’m such a believer in getting out to play groups, baby groups, story times at the library. Get out wherever you can to meet other mums and chat. It’s so important. It’s hard to get chatting at first, but everyone is in the same boat. I don’t know what I’d have done without them. We loved watching you on I’m A Celebrity, in 2017. Are there any Corrie friends who you think would be great in the jungle? And what advice would you give them? Thank you! It feels like forever ago now. I had the best time in there though, and met some brilliant people. I can think of a few mates who’d be great. I don’t know what advice I’d give them - I guess practise having cold showers and talking to yourself! You own the lovely Annie's Tea Shop and Restaurant in Manchester, so we thought it only right to ask your favourite drink and cake…! Cup of tea definitely. For the cake, I’m torn between carrot cake or a scone with jam and cream (jam first, then cream).

WAYS TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT

As part of this issue's focus on mental health and wellbeing, Lisa Drake, RTT, NLP, TLT Practitioner and Life Coach, from Rapid Change Hypnotherapy & Coaching Practice in Rochdale, shares valuable advice on how to increase your confidence and self esteem...

Sometimes we all get stuck in a pattern of thinking, which over time, will begin to diminish our confidence and selfesteem, until we just don’t know how to sort it out. With this in mind, I’ve put together some tips to help you. Please note, this takes practise and will not happen overnight. But the mind learns by repetition and what you focus on - you get more of.

4. STOP TRYING TO BE PERFECT Perfectionism is a form of self-sabotage as it’s like entering a race you can never win! You will constantly move the finishing line further and further, thus making yourself very unhappy and unsatisfied. Say to yourself “I am perfectly imperfect” and cut yourself a bit of slack.

1. LEARN TO LIKE YOURSELF Other people will like you to the degree that you like yourself. Think of all the compliments you’ve ever been given – what we look like is just the wrapping. If you’re caught in the trap of thinking negatively about yourself, every time you catch yourself doing it, stop and change the thought into something positive.

5. SET YOURSELF GOALS Without goals we can easily just drift along, feeling like we never really achieve anything or don’t even know where we’re heading. True, authentic happiness comes from setting your goals and moving towards them. The feeling of accomplishment, no matter how small the goal is, really gives a boost to your self esteem as you feel like you’ve achieved something.

2. FIND YOUR PURPOSE Whether you know this or not, we all have a purpose in life. This is directly connected to what we love to do. Think about this – what did you love doing between the ages of 7 and 14? We weren’t just put here to find love – we’re here to understand our talents and use them. 3. PRACTISE GRATITUDE Getting into the habit of looking for three things to be grateful for at the start of every day, no matter how bad things are, can really help to bring things back into perspective for you.

6. PRAISE MORE AND CRITICISE LESS Praise boosts our self esteem and criticism brings it down. Start by praising yourself at least once a day i.e “I’m a good person”, “I like myself” or “I did a good job”. Take it a step further and compliment someone else – when we compliment another person, it also boosts our own self-esteem, as long as it’s a genuine compliment!

12

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

mental wellbeing 7. DO SOMETHING KIND EVERY DAY When we do good things for others, no matter how small, it makes us feel better for longer than if we bought clothes or shoes etc. Maybe let someone in front of you in the traffic queue, or give some change to a homeless person – just helping someone without expecting anything in return, really boosts your self esteem for longer. 8. TAKE CARE OF YOU When was the last time you did something just for you? Maybe, just going for a walk, booking a massage or a reiki session, spending quality time with a good friend? All too often, we’re thinking about everyone else, that we totally forget to be good to ourselves. Plan in self-care at least once a month.

9. VISUALISE Many successful people use visualisation all the time, as a way of helping them to reach their goals. Remember this, if the mind can see it, the mind will help you to achieve it. Think of how you would like your life to look. Make a big bold picture of this in your mind and hold it, for at least five seconds. Do this regularly and eventually your mind will accept it and you’ll find yourself doing certain things to move you towards it. 10. ACT CONFIDENT Now I’m not talking about ‘fake it ‘til you make it’. But improve your posture and stand tall, practise making eye contact and smile. Learn to accept compliments…just simply say ‘Thank You’, even if you don’t believe it. Small changes in how you hold yourself can lead to bigger changes in time. Remember, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got.” What one change are you going to make today, this week, this month? Lisa Drake

mental wellbeing

It's all about balance: the mental health benefits of Pilates & Yoga Pilates and Yoga can be seen, by many, as ‘not for me’. This is often due to images online of lycra bound ladies or hippy looking folk chanting ‘om’. While this may be the case for some of the classes and workshops we provide, at Rochdale Pilates & Yoga studio we aim to bring Pilates and Yoga to the ‘real’ people of Rochdale and surrounding areas. Both Pilates and Yoga have enormous benefits for our physical health; reducing back pain, improving posture, strength and flexibility as well as improving balance and co-ordination, to name a few. However, our mental health needs our attention just as much as our physical health does. Let’s look at some of the ways that Pilates and Yoga have the potential to help improve mental health... USING THE BREATH TO FIND MINDFULNESS IN MOVEMENT Breath is one of the most powerful tools in calming the mind and is utilised in a wide range of mental health practises as well as our yoga classes and holistic workshops. Similarly, breathing is one of Joseph Pilates’ 8 Principles of Pilates and an essential component in all Pilates classes. Every Pilates exercise involves a breathing pattern which helps to supply oxygen to the muscles, removes waste products and prevents you from holding your breath.

cortisol and endorphins), providing a distraction from negative thoughts, releasing stress, enhancing mindfulness and helping to create a self-care routine. The most amazing part of speaking to our members is when they start seeing changes, not only in their bodies but also in their minds, in their emotions and in their lives altogether. We all know our modern world is full of distractions, stress and reasons not to commit. Each one of us is looking for a personal state of peace that would help us make sense of everything that is going on in our lives. When searching for that inner balance we usually consider booking a holiday or reaching for that second beer or glass of wine. Why not consider Pilates & Yoga as a viable tool to help us balance our lives? Join our supportive community today and start to work on the best version of you. We have classes across seven days, including Pilates for Beginners, Mixed Ability and Intermediate levels and pride ourselves in our small classes and individual attention.

Michelle Barker & Taira Booth

In focusing on your breath, the brain is not able to compile that “to do” list or focus on the afternoon schedule of picking up the kids, getting to swimming lessons or what to have for tea! Instead, Pilates and Yoga both direct your focus inward for the duration of the class, focusing on the present, feeling the muscles work and reconnecting with your body. STRESS MANAGEMENT AND RELAXATION Pilates and Yoga are also used widely as a way to reduce and cope with stress. Exercise can decrease ‘stress hormones’ like cortisol, and increase endorphins, your body’s ‘feel-good’ chemicals, giving your mood a natural boost. You may like a faster paced class such as our Body Conditioning class or even Equipment Pilates in order to feel the ‘burn’ and the endorphin release.

Rochdale Pilates & Yoga Studio is a Pilates, Yoga, Fitness and Wellness Studio in the heart of Rochdale.

Your individual attention in our small classes will help restore balance, stability and strength to your body when you need it most. We want you to come away feeling encouraged, relaxed and refreshed after your session and wanting to return, to feel the body and mind benefits of the amazing classes we offer. We pride ourselves in our warm, inclusive welcome and offer varying pricing packages to suit you. We hope that you take that first step and join us to see first hand how Pilates and Yoga can help you, no matter what your goals are.

Remember #itsallaboutbalance

IMPROVING MEMORY AND BRAIN TRAINING When performing automated forms of exercise such as running on a treadmill, the body may be working but the brain is not actively engaged. Reformer Circuit classes are a perfect way to improve body and mind; the Pilates machines add resistance and also provide assistance, meaning you get a full body and brain workout. A TOOL IN TREATING DEPRESSION OR ANXIETY Pilates and Yoga may assist in the treatment of depression and anxiety by offering an opportunity to socialise, changing the levels of chemicals in the brain (serotonin, 14

Natural remedies for mental wellbeing Many people complain of low mood, anxiety and sleepless nights, but did you know there are many natural remedies that might help. David Leeming, from The Health Food Centre in Rochdale has over 35 years experience in advising customers on natural remedies. David commented: "Herbal medicines are well worth a look, available either as single products or as formulas. For anxiety and low mood, herbs such as St John's Wort, lavender, lemon balm, Passiflora and Avena Sativa work well for many people, also aiding in restful sleep." "As far as nutrients go, it is important to ensure adequate levels of vitamin D, and the mineral Zinc, especially during the darker autumn and winter months." Cut out & keep

David added: "5-HTP, a form of the amino acid tryptophan, is highly regarded for mild to moderate depression and sleep disorders. Levels of the B complex help here too. Research also shows how important Omega 3 fatty acids are for brain health, and don't forget a multi-strain probiotic for that all important gut-brain connection." As always, if you are taking prescribed medication, always check with your GP before taking supplements.

mental wellbeing

crea t i vi t y & m e n t a l h e a lt h In Rochdale we have many fine examples of how creativity can help people become more resilient to the challenges presented by mental health issues. Challenges that appear to be both more prevalent and better recognised in our borough and across the UK. The Office for National Statistics estimates that 1 in 4 of us will have problems with our mental wellbeing at some time. To be more specific, The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey reports that nearly half (43.4%) of adults think that they have had a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their life (35.2% of men and 51.2% of women). A fifth of men (19.5%) and a third of women (33.7%) have had diagnoses confirmed by professionals. In Rochdale 14.5% of patients aged 18 or over on GP practice registers are recorded as having depression. This is above the national average of 9.1% (NHS Quality Outcomes Framework 2016/17). Poor mental health can impact on every aspect of life, including how we feel, think and communicate as well as on our physical health, our employment chances, our educational attainment, our relationships, lifestyle choices, and risk behaviours.

Creativity is increasingly being deployed as therapy for the mind across the whole spectrum of the arts from writing to making music, dancing to painting, gardening to baking, in fact whatever floats the creative boat. Creative activities as therapy for the mind builds resilience to mental health issues in many ways including: Relieving stress - like yoga for the brain. Even simply observing creativity can decrease psychological stress, such as attending a concert, checking out a museum, or reading. Improving mood - the self-reflection and greater understanding of oneself that comes with being creative can increase control over emotional pain and depression as well as boosting self-confidence and a feeling of wellbeing through achievement. Cultivating a social life - bonding through common experiences and interests develops positivity and affirmation, improved social contact, and communication with others. A healthy social life is essential to our wellbeing and resilience.

mental wellbeing

One of an increasing number of successful examples in Rochdale is SWCT (Stories We Could Tell). A project funded by Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale NHS CCG that provides a town centre based project for young people to develop their resilience to the mental health challenges they face and may face in the future through engaging with their creativity. It was formed in 2015 to provide a communal safe space for young people with an offer that engages them in creativity on their terms. Although SWCT members include young people (aged 11-24) who face mental health related challenges in their lives, the aim is to identify and enable them to develop their individual assets rather than focussing on their needs and problems.

Other local organisations working to help people build resilience to mental health challenges include: Skylight Circus Arts The 'Side by Side' project aims to address mental health and wellbeing for children, young people and families by providing healthy circus activities in a safe environment. It provides opportunities for ‘disengaged’ young people to build their confidence, to be less anxious and less isolated. 'Silver Circus' is a creative circus project for the over 55’s including those that that are frail or suffer from more severe health conditions. The project addresses isolation and loneliness. It aims to improve and maintain physicality, motor skills, cognitive skills whilst enhancing social connections and interactions. www.skylightcircusarts.com #Thrive Ecotherapy by Sow The City A horticultural and environmental therapy programme for young people aged 0-19 years, in Rochdale. www.sowthecity.org/thrive%20ecotherapy.htm The Proud Trust Home of LGBT+ youth - a life saving and life enhancing organisation that helps young people empower themselves to make a positive change for themselves and their communities. www.theproudtrust.org

Members are drawn from the whole spectrum of Rochdale’s diverse communities and many join the project through SWCT’s social media presence and at the recommendation of members themselves. SWCT works closely with partner organisations across the borough, including: #Thrive, MIND, CAMHS, Barnardo’s, local schools & colleges. Members are encouraged and supported to work alongside local artists and technicians to develop their creativity across the whole spectrum of the arts and to share what they create in their own way. This gives members a voice to which the wider community is encouraged to listen through local print media, internet radio, social media and public performance.

THE OVERCOAT MEN

Pictured: David Kilpatrick and Graham Morris in the dugout

The story of two men who saved Rochdale AFC In his latest book, Mark Hodkinson reveals the passion and dedication required to rescue a club dubbed ‘The worst team in the Football League’ from oblivion. In this exclusive interview, Trevor Hoyle asks the author (both of them Dale fans) how the book came to be written. Trevor: First of all, the title, which is kind of banal and yet intriguing at the same time. How did you come to it - or it to you? Mark: It was something I noticed years ago, that directors of football clubs always seem to wear big, bulky overcoats. I assume because directors have to dress more formal, they go for apparel that suits both the boardroom and the directors' box. I like that it clearly differentiates them, sets them out as a particular breed. (Left: Author of The Overcoat Men, Mark Hodkinson)

20

You describe the two men at the heart of the story, David Kilpatrick and Graham Morris, as 'two unsung heroes who saved Rochdale football club from oblivion'. It’s a big claim. Does it stack up? I think it does - although there were others who played vital supporting roles. Peter Madden built a team from almost nothing when Bob Stokoe moved on. His team played above themselves week after week, knowing the club's future depended on it. The other directors also contributed, even Andrew Hindle who has been much criticised in the town. It remains a fact that, after Fred Ratcliffe, Hindle has been the club's biggest benefactor. Kilpatrick and Morris were the catalysts of the club's 'comeback', though, and also stuck with it for many years. We were so lucky they did. We owe them such a lot. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

There’s acres of research in the book reaching back decades. What were the pitfalls and obstacles in gathering material? Did some people refuse, or were reluctant, to talk to you? (No names, no pack drill!) It took months and months to find some people but I got to everyone in the end. They were happy to talk, even when they knew it might be a tricky interview. I think the love of the club and the fact that much of this was nearly 40 years ago meant they had got over whatever historical issues they might have had with various people. There was a universal delight that Rochdale had continued and, on its own terms, prospered for so many years afterwards. I think at least half of those I interviewed thought the club would fold.

I get the sense that you relish the swirl of small-town camaraderie and rivalries, the bickering and petty jealousies - even the drinking culture of late nights behind closed doors - that forms the backdrop to this narrative. Yes, I love it! Most football books are a bit boring but I was determined to give this the flavour and mood of a novel, without going too far or trying to pass it off as fiction.

It was a story I've wanted to tell for many years. I've always wanted to properly indulge and take a forensic approach to a subject. Those type of books are usually dedicated to bigger subjects and issues but I wanted to adopt a similar approach to a crucial period in the life of a relatively obscure football club. I did scores of interviews and spent almost a year researching and writing it. Throughout, I did often wonder what this said about me as a person, my absolute commitment to such a narrow field. In the end, though, this is ultimately what books are for - to look deeper at a subject and try to find the truth, or tell a great story at least. I took very few liabilities - there was no need with such a rich seam of characters. You draw some interesting parallels - and stark contrasts - between the Premier league and lower league clubs like ‘little Rochdale’ as many commentators patronisingly call it. Is this account in some respects a dissection of what’s happened to the beautiful game in the UK? And what can we learn from it? A basic, obvious thing - keep an eye on who is running your football club. If it all feels too good to be true, it probably is. At Rochdale, www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

because we've flirted with oblivion, I think we're especially cautious. Unlike, say, Bury, Stockport County and Tranmere Rovers, we've never reached the second flight and that irked at the time but look at what has happened since. It's a badge of honour at the club that we pay our way, live within our means. It was a mantra set all those years ago by Kilpatrick and Morris and it has come to define the club.

Thanks for those insights, Mark. Speaking as a Dale fan, I think you’ve done a great job in charting the torturous path, and triumph, of Rochdale AFC. It has much greater resonance today when you look at the fate of Bolton, Bury and Oldham, and the agony their fans are going through. Personally, I feel blessed and very lucky that we had David and Graham at the helm during those crucial years. They are our true heroes.

We are proud of our rich heritage and the tradition of academic excellence combined with exceptional pastoral care. Our aim is to offer an outstanding and unrivalled education in which pupils are inspired to work hard, aim high and achieve. Our philosophy is one of achievement for all- an ethos shared by pupils and staff alike and one of our key strengths is our dedication to the development of every individual. We have a strong commitment to retaining the long- held traditions, values and ethos of each of the Bury Grammar Schools, while preparing pupils for lives in an ever changing world. We take enormous pride in our 450 year history, whilst looking to the future with confidence, openness and optimism. We are proud to be a leading

We encourage our pupils to develop broad interests and be culturally aware. Academic studies are complemented by a wide range of extra-curricular activities that are an important feature of life at BGS- embracing sport, music, drama, service to the local community and outdoor pursuits. All pupils are encouraged to pursue their interests and to explore and develop new ones. Thanks to a growing reputation as a School which is friendly, welcoming and inspires confidence in parents - and following a period of exceptional examination results, flawless inspections and outstanding successes in university and career outcomes - the number of pupils applying to join Bury Grammar School is seeing a surge year on year. This is reflected by the move from three to four form entry in Year 7, from September 2019. As Bury Grammar School goes into its 450th year, the school community is looking back on its distinguished history with much pride and also looking to the future with great confidence.

At BGS we know that education only happens once and we want our pupils to enjoy the very best teaching and to have the happiest possible years in school. The structure of our school reflects these aims. Between the ages of 7 and 16, boys and girls enjoy the benefits afforded by being taught separately but at the same time have the opportunity to socialise and learn together within our extensive extra-curricular programme. In the Infant School and Sixth Form, we find coeducational teaching works perfectly for our pupils. We find teaching separately but educating together really does provide our pupils with the best of both worlds. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

LITTLEBOROUGH – 40; WIDE SOUTH AMERICAN RIVER - 21! A lot of talk these days is about the future of the high street, the damage of the internet on local shops and, in particular, how a big online retailer has destroyed independent bookshops. In Rochdale, or more precisely, Littleborough, the local bookshop is celebrating its 40th birthday. The writer had better declare an interest here; I have been a customer and supporter of George and Ben Kelsall's shop for about a third of a century, long before the name of a wide South American river appeared as an online bookshop.

George tells me that young couples in the early days who later brought in their children, now appear with their grandchildren! Twenty-one years ago, George was joined by his son, Ben, who now runs the business full time. George still helps out on a part time basis; clearly George's love of books is lifelong and incurable! The shop has a wide range of stock of over 20,000 second-hand and collectable books, as well as new ones. It sells both fiction - including modern authors and the classics - and non-fiction with a particular focus on local history, industrial history, transport and natural history. The shop also offers a search service for hard to obtain books and a new books ordering service. The Kelsalls also exhibit at book fairs, including the annual event in York and have published about twenty new books on local history as well as books on music hall comedians and Yorkshire clockmakers. The bookshop can still supply local history classics such as originals of Tim Bobbin's (200 years old) and Robertsons books on Rochdale (over 125 years old). The shop is always interested in hearing from people with books to sell and provides a valuation service from a few books to a whole collection.

George Kelsall's interest in local history and love of books led to a change of career for him from working as an architect in Manchester. George opened the bookshop in the old Martins/Barclays Bank premises on Church Street in Littleborough in December 1979. It is now one of the longest established shops in the village. George's aim was - and still is - to provide as wide a range of books as possible to all comers with a friendly and helpful service for second-hand and collectable books. Business gradually grew, with not only local customers, but others from all over Lancashire and the North West. Some people call into the shop as part of their annual holidays in the Pennines. 28

The set up in the shop has not changed much over the years; downstairs are children's books, contemporary and popular fiction, local history, travel guides, collectors books, natural history and transport. At the back of the shop is more fiction and, upstairs, pretty much everything else. The more one visits the shop, the more one can find forgotten gems or books on entirely unfamiliar subjects. I particularly like the “middle“ room upstairs with its mix of Penguin classics, travel writing and children's classics. George and Ben are used to unusual requests; from a man who wanted 500 books to fill some enormous bookshelves to the Waterloo Road TV series when it was filmed in Rochdale who were loaned books by the shop; they have done the same for theatre productions.

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Most of the towns and boroughs of Greater Manchester simply do not have their own bookshop, let alone an independent, family-run enterprise where the staff know not only what they have in stock, but also have a keen interest in the whole world of old and new books. Conveniently situated in the centre of the Pennine village of Littleborough, the bookshop is as much a part of the local landscape as the railway station, the Co-op, the war memorial and the parish church. Perhaps some of us take it for granted, but we must not. If local shops are going to survive, we need to use them regularly and spend our money locally.

So, congratulations George and Ben on your shop's 40th birthday! Littleborough is blessed with a real village centre, historic buildings, decent public transport, an excellent library, Harehill Park, beautiful countryside and a community hub at the Coach House – and its own bookshop! If you live elsewhere in the borough, treat yourself to a visit to the Kelsalls' shop. Richard Lysons With thanks to George and Ben Kelsall

The importance of books in a person's life has never been greater. Basically - and I write here as a former teacher of English and school librarian - one of the greatest things a person can do is encourage children to have a lifelong love of books and reading. Forget about the tablet, the laptop, the phone and computer games; reading to and with a child cannot be beaten as a way of helping literacy and developing imagination. Ask any teacher, psychologist or health expert, the habit of reading is good for you. This goes right through one's life. Books are now “prescribed for depression and, once older people's eyesight has deteriorated, many of them love hearing books read aloud. Try it when you visit an older relative or friend, especially if they are confined to their home or hospital bed.

HOPE celebrating 60 years MENSWEAR

WOMENSWEAR

DENIS HOPE, one of Rochdale’s longest established independent family businesses are proudly celebrating their 60th birthday. It all began in 1959 when Denis, who was working at the reputable Edward Taylor’s in Heywood, decided it was time to start up on his own. With a vision and a passion for the clothing industry, Denis aimed to provide amazing ranges, sourced from throughout Britain and Europe, coupled with unbeatable customer service. He opened the doors to a small Drake Street shop in September 1959, such was the success that the shop was extended into the property next door. Years later, other stores were opened in Oldham and Bury, and a ladies department created within the flagship Drake St store.

There has always been a family feel to the store, not only has the business seen three generations of the Hope family working in it, but it has also served to three generations of customers. Many customers fondly recall shopping at Denis Hope with their parents. When Denis retired the business was handed over to his son Michael. New labels were added to the already strong brand mix, the biggest addition being Hugo Boss. Denis Hope are now one of the biggest stockists of Hugo Boss outside of Manchester City centre. The business continues to go from strength to strength. There is no longer the Oldham and Bury stores but a beautiful Men’s and Ladies store now exists in Clitheroe. The ladies department was moved four years ago to its current location in Norden, and continues to flourish. In October last year the flagship store was closed and relocated to Norden due to the decline of Drake St. Incorporated in the move to Norden was a rebranding to HOPE Menswear, in keeping with the other HOPE stores. Now occupying 794-798 Edenfield Rd is the Menswear store, formal hire department and the existing HOPE Womenswear.

30

Despite the changes and rebranding, the stores still hold true to the original values and ethos that Denis insisted on. Grandson Oliver, now in control of the Norden store, has recreated a welcome atmosphere and pressure free shopping environment. All the stores have an excellent brand mix that appeal to a wide range of age groups. Well known brands such as Hugo Boss, Ted Baker, Oui, Barbour and Part Two are coupled with brands that can not be found on the high street, some of which are exclusive to Hope in the North West. Oliver and his team are trying to change some preconceived ideas that the store is either too formal or not for their age group. "New customers frequently tell me that they thought we were just a suit shop, and they had no idea that we do things like Hugo Boss and Replay jeans, tee shirts and polos", said Oliver, adding, "We have customers shopping with us from early 20’s upwards on the mens side and 30+ on the ladies; we really do try and cater for everyone." The new location for the Norden stores is proving a great hit, people can now turn the shopping trip in to more of an experience, whether its food at Nutters or Catherines, a quick drink in the newly opened Norden Inn (a Hope team favourite after work) or a trip to Wildbloods to stock the fridge up with fine meats and deli produce. Norden also boasts a Personal Training and health food complex, several beauty and hair salons, more retail shops and lies at the foot of the stunning Greenbooth reservoirs. If you are yet to visit the store, you’ll love what you find.

U LT I M AT E S T E A K N I G H T Tom McNeeney, Head Chef of The Oxford Pub, Rochdale, shares his tips for a top steak night... Well, now summer has completely gone we all need something to brighten up our evenings and there isn’t much better to look forward to after a long week than a proper steak night! So here’s a few little tweaks you can use to make the fanciest of dinners that little bit more indulgent! THE STEAK: There isn’t a right way or a wrong way when it comes to steak; some people get a bit uppity about people who like theirs well done, others grimace at the thought of a blue steak. All I think is that if you’ve bought it, do what you want with it. But here’s a few tips that I think will help: Whatever steak you choose, ribeye, rump, sirloin, fillet or some outrageous, bone in caveman number, always cook it from room temperature. Season on every side with sea salt and black pepper and a little olive oil. Make sure your pan is good and hot when you place your steak into it, you want to hear it sizzle! Now the trick is to not faff with it, three minutes on each side of an inch thick steak will give you a lovely medium rare steak, about five and a half minutes a side for medium, seven minutes each for medium-well and a cool ten minutes for you well done steak lovers. Once It’s been flipped, throw a few knobs of butter into the pan, some garlic cloves and a sprig of thyme and baste that steak! Yes it’s excessive but you’ll thank me for it! Now, most importantly, you have to take that steak out of the pan, put it onto a warm plate and rest it for at least five minutes. And what you are left with should be, quite possibly, the perfect steak.

THE TOMATO: Preheat your oven to a happy 180ºc, throw a few toothpicks into some water to soak and then tinfoil a baking tray. For each person get yourself a nice, whole tomato (beef tomatoes are fantastic but are almost a meal in themselves). Here I’ve used plum tomatoes.

Slice the top off the tomato and a little off the bottom to stop it wobbling around. Then wrap a slice or two of good, streaky smoked bacon around each tomato and using the toothpicks (soaking them in water will mean they don’t burn so badly) pin the bacon in place, two should do it.

Now sit your voodoo tomatoes onto the tray, season well with black pepper, a little salt and some thyme and pop into the oven for about 20 minutes.

THE CHIPS: Now, if you're feeling really indulgent, few things really hit the spot like chips lashed in truffle oil and parmesan. If you want to use oven chips for this no one is going to blame you, just cook them as you normally would then skip to the last step. If you're making your own, get a steep sided pan of good, clean oil or if this is the only meal you're going to eat this month you can use beef dripping. Get your hands on some good potatoes, you want one and a half decent size ones per person, something like a maris piper would be great.

Cut them into chunky chips and soak them in some salted water for ten minutes. Heat your oil to around 160ºc, drain the water from the chips and pat dry with a tea towel before plunging them into the hot oil with extreme caution, you don’t want to overcrowd the pan, so do this in several smaller batches if there’s a lot to get through.

Using a long slotted spoon pull the chips out and place into a large bowl, drizzle over some truffle oil, some grated parmesan, a little sea salt and some fresh thyme leaves, give everything a toss and repeat so all your chips are good and coated. Try not to eat too many while your steak is resting.

Now pull them out and place on a kitchen roll lined tray for half an hour or so, turn the heat up to a dangerous 190ºc and pop them back in for about four minutes until brown and incredibly crispy.

THE WINE: When it comes to wine I know enough to get by; red wine is warm, white wine is cold, if you want to drink prosecco before lunchtime put orange juice in it, the usual.

The old idea that white is for fish and red is for meat can get in the bin; Andy thinks the oaky, smokey notes of an American Chardonnay or a well aged Resiling from Alsace could go toe to toe with any steak.

Or as with most situations you can’t go wrong with a good brut champagne! Cheers!

But what my mate Andy Hoyle (@manchesterwineman) doesn’t know about wine isn’t worth knowing. He’s got a couple of opinions on what would go best when it comes to picking wines for your steak night. Andy suggests for leaner cuts to use lighter reds, Beaujolais or an Australian Pinot Noir would be a fine shout. A fattier steak would help soften the tannins in a really punchy red like a Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Coral shine bright as Rochdale festival gets crowds feeling good More than 11,000 people packed Rochdale town centre for the annual celebration of music, food and family entertainment that is Rochdale Feel Good Festival. The town centre was filled with an array of entertainment for the 12th year of the Rochdale Borough Council organised event. Despite being hit by heavy rain and winds during the daytime, the sky cleared by late afternoon and large crowds gathered. At lunchtime the main stage (sponsored by The Flying Horse Hotel and hosted by DJ Dave Sweetmore) was opened with lots of fun and laughs by CBeebies favourite Mr Bloom and his band. They were followed by euphoric singer/songwriter Megan Dixon Hood. ‘Feel Good – Battle of the Bands’ winner, country rock four-piece, Between The Vines, got a great reception, as did Northern soul maestros The Northern SoulTrain, fronted by David John Jaggs.

36

Setting the scene for the headliners, The Hoosiers played for nearly an hour, performing all their crowd pleasing hits. Headliners, The Coral walked on stage to a rapturous reception from around 6,500 festival fans, opening their set with - ‘Jaqueline.’ The band played as many of their best known hits and album favourites as they could squeeze into their 65-minute set, before bringing the night to a close with their classic ‘Dreaming Of You.’ The festival’s food and drink village proved popular, and the town’s indoor venues were busy, with over 25 live performances from lunchtime through to the early hours of the morning. The event was funded by the council together with sponsorship from local businesses, including O2 Rochdale, The Flying Horse Hotel, Hopwood Hall College, Premier Kia, The Royal Toby Hotel, Recycle for Greater Manchester, Link4Life and Metrolink.

Rochdale Hornets look to rebuild in 2020 Rochdale Hornets are encouraging fans to get behind them as they plan to rebuild quickly for next season, despite their relegation to league one. The club said: “We would like to thank all supporters, members and sponsors for their backing this year. “We have every confidence in the coaching staff, and plans are already well underway to assemble the most competitive squad possible for the 2020 season. “The recently-appointed board of directors have committed to reviewing the progress of the club in September, and we are focused as a collective on building a strong Rochdale culture at Hornets... That will be based around hard work, high standards, local talent and establishing a proper pathway for young players from college to amateurs to the professional game.

“Off the field, we are actively working with current, old and new sponsors to get behind the club as it looks to the future. "There are some challenges that lie ahead but plenty of optimism for Rochdale Hornets moving forward.” Rochdale Hornets End of Season Awards take place on Friday 27th September at Rochdale Cricket Club. Tickets £25pp, available at www.hornetsrugbyleague.co.uk, including entertainment and a three course meal. B e a u t y : To p t r e n d s t h i s a u t u m n In this issue, I reveal the top beauty trends which will take us through 2019 and into the new year. These include the benefits of roses in skincare, why big brows aren’t going anywhere, and the myriad of lashes (which I'll attempt to simplify!). Here goes… COMING UP ROSES We are all thrilled when we receive a beautiful sweet-smelling bunch of roses, but have you thought of introducing them into your beauty routine? Roses have been used in skincare for many years. Mary Pickford, an American actress and producer (the Angelina Jolie of her day), was said to have eaten roses as she thought they enhanced her beauty. Although I am not suggesting that you incorporate rose petals into your diet, roses applied topically can have many skin benefits. Roses calm the skin, have anti inflammatory and scar reducing properties, are anti-bacterial and de-stress the skin. The naturally occurring oils and sugars hold moisture in the skin making the skin feel soft to the touch and also brightening the complexion. All skin types can benefit from roses this season. Keep your eyes peeled for Payot's Rose lift range which combines all the benefits mentioned, plus fibroblasts and memory foam technology which restructures and scaffolds the skin. BIG IS BEAUTIFUL Big brows are in; they are so IN, in fact that if you haven’t tried HD brows yet, you are overdue an appointment - but better late than never as they say. HD brows are not 'big black brows'; they are bespoke brows, measured against your specific facial features, tinted or lightened according to your skin and hair colour, and shaped to perfection to truly define the eye area. Whether you want a natural, flat, soap/brushed up, highlighted or Instagram brow your HD brow technician will not only create this for you, but will also advise you on how to enhance your brows further in your daily routine. With so many brow options available there really is an option for all ages and styles. Whatever brow shape you choose… make sure they’re big! BAT THOSE LASHES There are two major lash treatments which are dominating salons at the moment - The Classic and The Russian. With either of these lash enhancements, the lashes used come in a number of different lengths, thicknesses and level of curl. Here are some eyelash extension specifics: •They take from 45 minutes up to 2 hours to apply • Lash extensions are a pain free treatment • With appropriate care there is no damage to your natural lashes • If looked after properly, they can last between 4-6 weeks • The extensions fall out naturally and gradually • You don’t have to have a break in between applications, they can be infilled every 2-3 weeks So I hear you… what makes Russian lashes different to classic lashes? There are three main differences; weight, look and application method. Russian lashes are incredibly light; your highly skilled Russian lash technician will pick up 3-6 Russian lashes and fan them these are then all applied to one lash! This is a highly skilled and time consuming process but the results are worth it. The ‘look’ is fluffy and flirty lashes which are very comfortable due to their lightweight nature. TOWING THE LINE

A couple of weeks ago I undertook one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of my life, I retook my driving test. This was nothing to do with a brush with the law but rather to do with the rules around towing a trailer. To cut a long story short, if you passed your test on or after 1st January 1997 there are some additional restrictions as to the weight you can legally tow with a normal car. It’s hard to convey in words the effort needed, after such a long time falling into bad habits, of habitually checking the mirrors at regular intervals, looking over your shoulder before moving off and dare I say it, staying within the legal speed limit at all times. Anyway, I passed and all is well with the world so it seems a good time to review what makes a good car for towing and look at the options on the market.

VOLKSWAGEN ARTEON Not an obvious choice is the Sporty Saloon from Volkswagen but it was voted Tow Car of the Year 2019 and as such I thought it deserved further investigation. Being the direct descendent of the Passat CC, the Arteon has the sleek lines of a coupe but with a four door configuration.

46

I’ve always been a fan of the Passat for its demure and low key presence and the Arteon carries on that tradition nicely. Inside, the cabin feels modern and spacious, just like its cousin the Audi A5, from which this car, as you may expect, borrows heavily.

VOLVO XC60

It was the 2.0 TDi 150 variant which won the award and that seems logical as this power plant offers a good balance of economy and most important to towing – torque. Official figures are that the Arteon in this spec will tow up to 2000kg but remember that official guidance says that your trailer should never exceed 85% of the weight of the car.

Our friends at the caravan club also praised the handling as being “fun”. Now, don’t get me wrong, for the size, weight and height of the XC60 it handles admirably well but to call it fun would be somewhat of a push. On the motorway, however, the VW feels planted and road noise is well insulated from the cabin. The higher seating position of the Volvo gives a better field of vision, in my view which adds to confidence, especially when you a towing a load behind.

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Fitting the more traditional shape of a tow car, the Volvo XC60 picked up the 2019 Tow Car of the Year award from the Caravan Club, picking up praise for its acceleration, stability and braking prowess whilst towing.

The cockpit also feels a bit more utilitarian than the Arteon but that is because these cars are usually for different worlds. For a family however, the XC60 feels much more suitable than the VW, the boot feels massive and the cabin much more light and airy.

year warranty. Admittedly, the entry model only comes with front-wheeldrive, but with a maximum towing weight it matches the XC-60 above and comes in at roughly half the cost. Of course, the Korrando doesn’t have the same feel as its pricier competitors but what it does provide is solid, dependable motoring a much more affordable price point. Behind the wheel, the Korrando feels dependable and solid. Noise is a little more noticeable in the driver’s seat than the other two cars mentioned here but acceleration is smooth, the suspension has plenty of give and braking feels confident.

SSANGYONG KORANDO

Whatever tow car you pick though, ensure it meets your needs and that you stay legal, not only with licencing but with tow weights and the car you use to tow. Away from caravanning you’d be surprised how much a horse box complete with equine load can tip the scales and there are only a few cars out there that are legally rated to pull that kind of load. Mark D’Apice

Now, depending on where you live, the SsangYong name may not be immediately recognisable. The South-Korean company haven’t exactly gone overboard with their advertising budget, but I live just around the corner from one of their main dealers and have an increasing number of SsangYongs on the road lately. This is no doubt down to their competitive pricing strategy. Starting from just £17,495, the Korando is a direct competitor for the Kia Sportage, especially as SsangYong will match the seven www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

ROCHDALE RSPCA NEWS & EVENTS September 2019 marks the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War, but 1939 was also the year that the Rochdale branch of the RSPCA and the National Veterinary Medicine Association decided to acquire the former Woodman Hotel on the corner of High St and Redcross St to set up a new animal clinic and shelter. It became operational on 2nd October 1939 and was officially opened by the Mayor on 6th December 1939. RSPCA staff and volunteers continue to work hard to care for the hundreds of animals and birds that cross the threshold of the animal centre every year but this can only continue well into the future with the continued support of the people of Rochdale. We work hard to try to raise enough funds to cover running costs of the animal centre for the abandoned and abused animals or wildlife casualties brought into our care, but what has recently become apparent is the value of what we do for the community as a whole. Many of our volunteers have stories of their own to show how the proximity to animals has helped them deal with health issues and loneliness.

Fortunately one of our dedicated volunteers asked if she could look after her. She did her homework and bought whatever was needed to house and feed her and took her home. It took a long time but with the right food she’s now double in weight and size, her shell is hard and she’s developing a personality. ZIPPY One year old Zippy came into our care due to a serious change in his owner’s circumstances.

Zippy has developed an allergy to certain foods which presents itself as hair loss and scabs on his face and ears but we have identified food that has settled his skin. Zippy is full of energy and is quite a livewire.

KALYPSO

AMBER

Kalypso the tortoise had been brought in by an inspector who had been to a house and found her in a shoebox. The owner said he’d bought it off Gumtree the previous week and forgotten about it.

Amber is a 10+ year old beautiful ginger female. She was very nervous of staff on arrival but has since become more comfortable around our staff and volunteers. Amber is very independent and likes to do things on her terms. She is very playful; her favourite thing is to play with a feather chaser but when she is used to you she will wrap around your legs.

Multi-award winning luxury relaxation REVIEW: The Spa at the Midland If you’re looking for the perfect place to unwind, The Spa at the Midland feels a million miles away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Situated at the historic Midland Hotel, in Manchester, the luxury multi award winning spa offers guests an opulent space to unwind and discover ‘The Art of Relaxation' and was crowned ‘Best Luxury Urban Escape' in Northern Europe at the prestigious World Luxury Spa Awards 2019. From first stepping foot in this elegant spa, my guest and I were hit with the wonderful fragrance of luxury ESPA products and greeted by the friendly spa team, who all speak in hushed tones, so as not to disturb the tranquil atmosphere. The spa is blissfully quiet; you almost forget you're in the middle of a busy city centre. The spa offer many luxury treatments; we chose the Hot Stone Massages in a duo treatment room, which proved to be the perfect choice. The highly experienced therapists helped ease all muscle tension, providing a deeply restful and stress-relieving experience. Another treatment that comes highly recommended on TripAdvisor is the popular 'Serene Sleep', which is unique to The Spa at the Midland.

The spa includes a Rasul mud chamber, Alder wood sauna with Himalayan salt block wall, aromatherapy steam room with sea air atmosphere to help clear the senses, and invigorating shower experiences such as Caribbean Storm and Arctic Rain... if you're brave enough! There’s also the heated relaxation pool, with swan neck fountain to help ease neck and shoulder tension. Or you can while away the hours in your fluffy white robe and slippers, in the blissful sleep chambers - complete with hanging pod cocoons and sound-cancelling egg chairs. The perfect place to lose track of time. My guest and I chose a nutritious platter for our lunch in the spa cafe. Choices included the Superfoods, Herbivorous or High Protein platter. The High Protein platter included Beef Carpaccio with rocket and Parmesan, Caesar salad with chargrilled chicken and a lemon and pine nut cake, amongst many other delicious, yet healthy treats. For a more indulgent option, there's also the famous Taster of Afternoon Tea. ROCHDALE MENSWEAR STORE RECEIVES TOP RECOGNITION Independent Rochdale clothing store Buckley Menswear has been shortlisted for a 2019 Drapers Independent Award. The iconic Drapers Independents Awards celebrate the best fashion retailers and brands across the UK and Ireland, recognising customer service, innovation, grit and community spirit shown by the top independent multi-brand retailers. Buckley Menswear, which opened on South Parade less than 12 months ago, has been named as a finalist for Best New Retailer.

BAMFORD SALON VOTED BEST IN GREATER MANCHESTER The Beauty Establishment, on Bury Road, Bamford, has been the voted best in Greater Manchester. Lucy Atherton, owner of The Beauty Establishment, scooped the 'Greater Manchester Five Star Beauty Salon of the Year' Award at the North West Beauty Industry Awards 2019. Lucy was also a finalist in the Beauty Therapist of the Year award category. The awards are voted for by the general public and celebrate the best of the beauty industry in the region. Lucy commented: “This year has been incredibly exciting for my business and to win this award is a real privilege. I work extremely hard to deliver an excellent service to my clients and to have that acknowledged is a huge accolade. Thank you to everyone who voted for me.”

CELEBRATING TWO FUN-FILLED YEARS Owner, Phil Buckley said: “To be nominated and then shortlisted to the top 10 new independents in the country is a great honour, not just for me and my family, it’s also another massive positive for Rochdale as a town centre and a destination. We have so much going on in the centre at the moment and to be in the thick of it all on South Parade is awesome. The building we occupy just adds to the image of the shop and we are attracting lots of new and old customers and nothing but positive feedback.” Phil added: “The actual awards ceremony is in London in September and my wife and I are attending and having a few nights there. It’ll be a nice reward for all the work we’ve both put into setting up the business. I don’t expect to win but to just be shortlisted is recognition enough.” Buckley Menswear is located in one of the most iconic buildings in town, boasting two floors filled with quality menswear.

Rochdale soft play centre, Jolly Giraffes, recently celebrated its second birthday. Owner, Rachel Blakeman, commented: "Our second birthday party was a huge success; parents and children sang happy birthday as we handed out lots of free cake and drinks! We would like to thank our customers, staff and community for all their support over the past two years. We are continuing to add more exciting parts to the play centre and also refurbishing our bathroom. We can’t wait to see what the next year brings!" The play centre, on Bridgefold Road, provides an exciting 'indoor playground' for local children to explore, with the aim being to 'help children smile wider and laugh harder!'.

ARTISAN MARKET CONTINUES TO PROVE A HUGE SUCCESS Rochdale Artisan Market is going from strength to strength gaining new and returning visitors each month. Denise Valente, Director of The Market Co, commented: “The feedback we have had from the public has been so heart-warming and it’s a pleasure to deliver something to this wonderful town that people really appreciate. Most of our artisan traders are local to Rochdale and surrounding towns and it’s wonderful to see these local micro businesses being so well supported by their neighbours, friends and families.” “These next few months [28th September, 26th October] will see us gearing up for the festive season, culminating in our very own Christmas Artisan Market on Saturday 30th November. There will be bells jingling, tinsel glittering, candles flickering and a whole host of mouth-watering seasonal goodies to be had.” If you haven’t yet visited then now’s the time! Rochdale Artisan Market takes place on The Butts, on the last Saturday every month. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

STAR STUDDED CAST TO JOIN JIMMY CRICKET IN MUSICAL CONCERT

JENNY'S A RUNAWAY WINNER WITH REVILO! A Rochdale 'brave soul' enjoyed an unforgettable day out, thanks to a community-minded local business.

Rochdale Town Hall will play host to a Musical Concert in aid of the Mayors Charity Appeal on Sunday 10th November at 4pm.

Homes and mortgages specialist Revilo Homes treated mother-of-two Jenny Neaverson to a special horse-racing themed event hosted at the famed Nutters restaurant. Revilo Homes & Mortgages sponsored a Ladies Day Luncheon at celebrity chef Andrew Nutter’s awardwinning restaurant, offering up their own table on social media for followers to nominate a worthy cause.

'Let's Hear it for the Wee Man', written by popular Rochdale comedian Jimmy Cricket, tells the true story of Northern Ireland’s only recipient of the Victoria Cross, James Magennis. Alongside Jimmy, the star-studded cast includes Rochdale actress Sue Devaney, Coronation Street actor Charles Lawson and actor Nick Newbould. Priced at £10, tickets can be purchased from Rochdale Town Hall or by calling 01706 924773.

“As lead sponsors of the event we wanted to make it an extra special day and decided to let the community choose who most deserved to be our guests,” said Revilo Group managing director Lee Collins. “We had dozens of nominations - all of them very worthy indeed - but Jenny’s name repeatedly appeared and, having heard her story, it was an easy decision to make. Her friends describe her as ‘the most genuine, heart-warming person’ who has stayed positive throughout a difficult personal time. A truly brave soul. Jenny, who lives in Rochdale, was diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago. She was chauffeur-driven to the event, where she enjoyed a three-course lunch and entertainment with three friends, all in aid of the Rochdale NSPCC. YOUNG ROCHDALE WRITER’S WORK TO HIT FESTIVAL STAGE Young local playwright Riz Ali has been crowned winner of a competition organised by Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival for 14-25 year olds and will now see her words brought to life on the stage this autumn. The 22-year-old’s work was chosen from dozens of budding local writers who submitted the first ten pages of a script earlier this year for the festival’s A Different Story of Rochdale: Tales from the Town Hall Playwriting Competition. Her play, inspired by Rochdale Town Hall, will be performed during the finale of the festival on Monday 21 October in the iconic building itself by professional actors, with direction from the M6 Theatre Company. Judges were very impressed by Riz’s dialogue, paced storytelling and said she had a clear talent. Now Riz, who lives in the Deeplish area of Rochdale, is working with scriptwriter Nicola Schofield. Nicola, whose work includes the acclaimed BBC drama ‘Doctors’ is helping to develop Riz’s words into a 30-minute play, giving the budding writer a unique hands-on experience with professional scriptwriting. 64

Riz said: “It’s going to be so exciting to be part of the festival. I want to work in the arts as a career and the doors this opportunity could open are overwhelming... This is the first time I’ve ever shown anyone my work, it’s such a personal thing to me and to have won the competition is amazing. I can’t wait to see my characters come to life on the stage, especially at such an iconic venue.” While she’s keeping full details of the play under wraps until its first performance, Riz said it’s all about living life to the full: “The play is about not wasting time and not living within boundaries set by others or circumstance. Grow gracefully, but make sure you live. That’s what it’s about, that’s the philosophy that inspired me.” Free tickets for the premiere of her play that also include a tour of the town hall and a drinks reception are available now from the festival website. The Rochdale festival also features the previously announced television presenter John Craven, feel-good fiction writer Milly Johnson, Gogglebox star and broadcaster Reverend Kate Bottley, children’s author www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

and television presenter Konnie Huq, author and activist Erin Ekins, international bestselling crime author and poet Sophie Hannah, popular children’s authors Harry Heape and Hannah Lee, as well as award winning illustrator Olivia Lomenech Gill.
