Dear Readers,

Welcome to our spring edition,

This issue is packed with uplifting news, exciting events and inspiring stories from across the borough. We’re delighted to feature Rochdale’s own Lioness Keira Walsh on the cover, with a special interview celebrating her incredible achievements and her recent MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List.

As a proud family-run business for 22 years, it means so much to continue sharing the stories, successes and community spirit that make our borough such a wonderful place to live, work and visit.

We’re delighted to launch our Kindness Awards (p. 47), and we’d love your nominations. We’re looking for people who go above and beyond for others – whether that’s helping neighbours, raising money for good causes or simply spreading positivity.

Rochdale mum Catherine Aspinall returns with more fantastic ideas for family fun this spring (come rain or shine!), while Steve Cooke brings you his latest guide to what’s happening in the arts, and Richard Lysons delves into local history. We also meet local explorer and YouTuber Malc Grimwood, to discuss the fascinating hidden history of our countryside.

There’s so much to enjoy this season, from live music and theatre to outdoor events, markets and festivals. With longer days and warmer weather on the way, it’s the perfect time to get out and explore everything Rochdale has to offer.

A big thank you to the talented photographers from Rochdale & District Camera Club who have captured some beautiful images of our local countryside for our "In The Frame" feature.

As always, we love hearing from you. To share pictures, stories or kindness award nominations email features@rochdalestyle.com.

Have a lovely spring!

THE BLACK DYKE BAND 14 MAY | ROCHDALE TOWN HALL

In 1871 The Black Dyke Band performed at the original opening ceremony for Rochdale Town Hall. The band then came back in 2024 to reopen the town hall following the refurbishment. The band was so well received they are performing again in 2026.

Over 160 years old, Black Dyke is described as the most famous brass band in the world having toured Japan, USA, Australlia, Europe and having performed with likes of Elton John and The Beatles. Performing on The Pyramid Stage, Glastonbury in 2017, is testament that Black Dyke is no normal 'brass band' and appeals to a wide ranging audience! Come and hear for yourself what its like to experience the uplifting sounds of a 'traditional' brass band in the 21st century. We promise you will not leave disapointed!

"My community in Syke always supported me with my football and wanted me to succeed."

KEIRA WALSH MBE

FROM SYKE TO THE LIONESSES — AND ROYAL RECOGNITION

Rochdale’s very own Lioness, Keira Walsh, has been recognised with an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List for 2026, marking another remarkable milestone in a career that has inspired young footballers across the borough and beyond.

Speaking to Rochdale Style, Keira said she was both surprised and honoured by the recognition:

"I was extremely honoured and proud to be in the honours list. It’s never something you are expecting and I was surprised, but it was a really special moment for me and my family."

Despite her incredible success, Keira was quick to dedicate the honour to her hometown and the people who supported her from the very beginning, adding:

"I just think my community in Syke always supported me with my football and wanted me to succeed."

The 28-year-old England midfielder, played a pivotal role in the Lionesses’ historic success in recent years, including winning back-to-back European Championships in 2022 and 2025, and being named Player of the Match at the 2022 Wembley final. She was also part of the Lionesses’ campaign for more PE in schools and equal access to football for girls – an initiative that led to multi-million pound government investment in school sport.

Keira first developed her love for football playing locally and dreamt of one day representing her country.

Her career has since taken her across Europe. After winning multiple trophies with Manchester City, she made a record-breaking move to FC Barcelona Femení, where she enjoyed immediate success. In her first season with the Catalan giants, she won the UEFA Women’s Champions League title, playing alongside England teammate Lucy Bronze as Barcelona dominated European football.

In January 2025, Keira returned to England to join Chelsea FC continuing her career at the very top level of the game. She says settling into a new club always takes time, but she is enjoying the challenge:

"I think it always takes a little bit of time to get used to a new club and playing with different players, but I’ve been there for over a year now and I’m feeling good."

Keira remains passionate about encouraging the next generation of players to believe in themselves:

"I would just tell [young people] to keep chasing that dream. I never thought it would be possible for me to be a professional footballer when I was younger, but I just loved playing the game so much and was focused on that.

"Enjoy the journey and keep working hard and you can go as far as you want to."

Despite moving away, Keira has kept a close connection with her hometown, supporting grassroots football, local charities and community projects, and never forgetting where it all started.

Later this year, she is planning to launch her own foundation, with the first project set to be an exciting new multi-sport pitch in Syke that will be free for the whole community to use.

She commented: "I would just love to give back to my local community and I want to create a space where young girls and boys can feel safe and express themselves through sport, whether it’s football or a different sport. I think it’s important they have somewhere they can have that opportunity."

The project is being developed in partnership with Syke Community Centre, where Keira is a patron, along with Rochdale Borough Council. More details coming soon!

Keira’s family, who still live in Rochdale, say the MBE recognition meant the world to them and to everyone who has followed her journey from the very beginning.

Keira’s mum, Tracy, said:

"To have that recognition is amazing, we honestly couldn’t believe it when she told us. We’re all so proud of her and everything she’s achieved so far. Seeing her go from kicking a ball around Syke Common with her dad, to becoming a Lioness and being awarded an MBE has just been incredible for us as a family.

"For Keira, it’s about more than football – she wants young girls, especially back home, to believe they can do it too. We’re just a normal family from Rochdale, so I hope her story inspires others to follow their dreams."

From Syke Common to Wembley, Keira’s journey continues to be a source of pride for Rochdale, and proof that anything is possible.

A striking mural celebrating Keira Walsh can be found on Smith Street, opposite M&S in Rochdale Town Centre, created by Manchester-based mural artist Katie Scott

SYNTH-POP LEGENDS OMD set for historic Rochdale show

Synth and electronic legends Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) will be performing live for the very first time in Rochdale when they play a headline show at Rochdale Town Hall Square this summer.

Despite famously recording their debut single ‘Electricity’ in the town, remarkably the 80s icons have never played Rochdale before. But on Friday 7 August the duo will put that right, bringing their acclaimed ‘Summer of Hits’ tour to town alongside guests - post-punk legends Peter Hook & The Light, and Manchester’s post-punk/funk band - A Certain Ratio.

Excitement has been building since the news was announced, with over 3,000 tickets already snapped up. Andy McCluskey, co-founder and lead vocalist from OMD said they’re looking forward to headlining one of the north’s most spectacular heritage venues which has recently undergone a multi-million-pound revamp:

"We can't wait to come and play at Rochdale’s magnificent town hall square. We recorded our first single at Rochdale's Cargo Studios back in 1979, but have never played in the town before, so what a great way to finally come back and have a party with our old Factory Records friends."

With a career spanning more than four decades, over 40 million records sold worldwide and 18 timeless top 40 hits, OMD are one of Britain’s best-loved and most influential pop groups. They followed that debut single with genre-defining hits including Enola Gay, Maid of Orleans, Souvenir, and If You Leave, propelling them into the stratosphere and shaping the musical landscape of the 1980s. Today their live shows are packed with energy, nostalgia and synth-driven brilliance.

Peter Hook and The Light, the powerhouse post-punk band fronted by Joy Division and New Order co-founder Peter Hook, also recorded at Cargo Studios, cementing Rochdale's crucial role in the post-punk and electronic music scene. Peter Hook said Rochdale looms very large in all three of the bands’ histories:

"Simply because of John Brierley and Cargo Studios on Kenion Street, all three of us - me, OMD and A Certain Ratio recorded with John, engineering at Cargo. He was a sonic assassin, working wonders with the equipment in that studio. The songs sounded as fantastic then as they still do today, it must have been something in the water! The sound was why I bought the studio when John retired and while we didn't have his sound, we still recorded and helped hundreds of bands at the beginning of their journey, in the town."

Whilst all three bands on the line-up started their recording careers in Rochdale, incredibly this August it will be the first time they’ve played together in 47 years, said Martin Moscrop, founding member of A Certain Ratio:

"This show feels like the Factory Records outings we did between 1979 and 1980, when we used to go out as a package and played many times with OMD and Joy Division. So playing with Peter, Andy and Paul again will be a pleasure. The last time we all played together was at The Acklam Hall, London back in May 1979."

Staged in partnership with Rochdale Borough Council and Rochdale Development Agency the special show is part of ‘Rochdale Music Stories’ - a campaign launched last year as part of the town’s year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture, to shine a spotlight on Rochdale’s longstanding influence on British music.

Tickets (£55 + booking fee) available at quaytickets.com and rochdale.gov.uk/YourEvents.

APRIL SHOWERS

ROCHDALE TOWN HALL

• The Esplanade, OL16 1AZ

• Park at the multi-story at Rochdale Riverside (OL16 1BE), a 5 min walk

If you’re looking for an indoor attraction to occupy the kids over Easter, then you need look no further than the magnificent Rochdale Town Hall.

In addition to the permanent popular features such as dressing up, brass rubbing and constructing a miniature Town Hall, there is a free activity trail to put a spring in your step! The spring trail requires you to look for signs, crack clues and solve riddles before claiming your special prize. There is also now a new cosy reading room, so you can relax with a book after your adventure!

Saturday 11 April will see yet more stories and also the casting of spells, as the Folconians guide you on a fascinating quest through the beautiful building. Expect enchanting tales, theatrical performances and hands-on activities, mixed together with magic and mayhem! There will be less mayhem on SEND Sunday (12 April), where the neurodiverse community can explore the Town Hall at their own relaxed pace, with plenty of opportunities for play and creativity. Make sure to check out the website for more details and to book - rochdaletownhall.co.uk

CLUE COLLECTORS

• 25 Market Place, OL10 1LA

• There is a free car park on Taylor Street, just behind the venue

Another place to escape those April showers should most definitely be Clue Collectors- a new escape room attraction hidden away in Heywood.

There are currently two rooms - Carnival Crisis with a circus theme for the younger members of the family, and Chapel of the Cursed Chalice, which I am told is more eerie and extra difficult. We stuck to Carnival Crisis, although this was hard enough!

When booking Clue Collectors I did not expect to be scrambling around in a ball pit, firing Nerf guns, crawling into cupboards or hooking ducks… but that is what occurred! I also didn’t expect to want to be filing for divorce… but that might also have occurred during the riddle solving, code cracking mission against the clock!

I felt more like I was on an episode of the Crystal Maze than in a small building in Heywood. The interactive, hands-on activities were fantastic and meant everyone could get involved, and the detailed decoration of the rooms was also brilliant. A fantastic 85 minutes (yes we did fail and exceed the time limit) was had by all. We will definitely plan a return visit when any new themes are announced, but we might have to work on our teamwork and logical reasoning first!

SPRING STROLLS

EALEES

• Pay and display parking at OL15 0AQ

Ealees stretches between the east bank of Hollingworth Lake and the centre of Littleborough. It features a nice flat path which follows a babbling brook flanked by trees and fields, providing the perfect place to picnic and to paddle. There’s plenty of wildlife to spot too and places to throw stones into the water.

We usually follow an out and back route, going from the visitor centre car park along the path to West View in Littleborough. This is about a mile, and then we turn back on ourselves. However, a stroll through Ealees could easily be incorporated into a longer walk, to include the lake and the Rochdale Canal, if you have more adventurous kids!

BLACKSTONE EDGE

• Parking below the White House pub at OL12 0LG

Another fabulous path can be found at the top of Blackstone Edge, offering a panoramic vista across the whole of Rochdale, and much further afield on a clear day! This path forms part of the Pennine Way, and, as it is flat and traffic free, it is great for dog walks, bike practice and pram pushing (a little bumpy!). The path runs from behind the White House pub and alongside White Holme and Warland reservoirs, before it becomes less toddler-friendly as it heads towards the secret beach at Gaddings Dam.

The views are amazing, like being rewarded for having climbed a massive mountain but without any of the effort, and there’s numerous things to spot too, including boulders, bridges and the Stanza Stones with carved into them.

WATERGROVE

• Free car park at the top of Ramsden Road (OL12 9NJ)

Watergrove reservoir presides over Wardle village and offers a 2.5 mile circular route for all to enjoy. It is a great place for little explorers, as there are old ruins to discover and deers to spot, but it is not the best walk for wheels, as there are some steps to climb, bridges to navigate and cobbles to conquer!

It is such a peaceful setting, the views are glorious and there are plenty of opportunities to get close to the shoreline to skim stones.

COWN RESERVOIR

• Car parking outside the Water Ski Academy on Back Cowm Lane (OL12 8BE)

A smaller reservoir for little legs to explore is Cowm, sitting to the west of Whitworth. The path which traces the edge of the water is just over a mile long, and provides the perfect place to spot ducks and even see jet skis performing stunts!

PLANNING FOR PEACE OF MIND With Wills & Wishes Legal

Now celebrating five years in business, Fiona Daly has made it her mission to take the fear and confusion out of making a Will and Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA). Her goal? To ensure more Rochdale families have the right legal protection in place, before it’s needed.

In just five years, Fiona has supported hundreds of clients and built a reputation for her calm, jargon-free approach. With almost 200 five-star Google reviews, clients consistently praise her "patience", "efficiency", and "understanding". In 2024, her expertise even reached a national audience when she appeared on ITV Tonight, offering viewers guidance on protecting their family’s future.

While many people recognise the importance of making a Will, fewer realise that a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is just as essential. In fact, it’s estimated that 78% of UK adults do not have an LPA in place.

WHAT IS A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY?

An LPA is a legal document that allows you to choose someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you lose the mental capacity to do so yourself due to illness or injury. The people you choose are known as your Attorneys.

There are two types of LPA:

Property & Financial Affairs LPA

This allows your Attorney to manage your bank accounts, pay bills, deal with pensions, and handle property matters.

Health & Welfare LPA

This enables your Attorney to make decisions about your medical treatment, care arrangements, and choose a suitable care home if needed.

Importantly, without an LPA in place, no one – not even your spouse or son or daughter – automatically has the legal authority to make decisions for you.

FIONA’S TOP TIPS FOR PUTTING AN LPA IN PLACE…

Plan early

You can only set up an LPA while you still have mental capacity. If capacity is lost due to an accident, stroke, or illness such as dementia, it’s too late to appoint Attorneys.

Keep it up to date

Life changes, and so might your choice of Attorney. Marriage, divorce, bereavement or children reaching adulthood can all affect who you’d want to act on your behalf. Reviewing your documents ensures they still reflect your wishes.

Avoid costly mistakes

Although DIY forms are available, errors can invalidate an LPA for future use or cause significant delays and extra cost in validating them. A qualified solicitor or professional Will writer can guide you through your options, discuss who is suitable to act as your Attorney, and ensure the documents work in practice.

A PERSONAL, LOCAL SERVICE

Fiona offers a friendly, professional service tailored to each client. Appointments take place in the comfort of your own home, at a time that suits you, and typically involve two meetings – one to prepare the documents and one to sign them – at no additional charge. If you would like to speak to Fiona about Wills or Lasting Powers of Attorney, you can contact her on 07799 213 721.

CARE, COMPASSION & COMMUNITY At Castletons Family Funeral Services

With over 10 years of experience supporting families through difficult times, Karen has recently opened Castletons Family Funeral Services, alongside her sister Dawn. Together, the pair who were both born and raised in Castleton, bring a deeply personal, compassionate approach to funeral care. We spoke to Karen about her journey into the profession, the values behind her new business and what families can expect.

Style: How did your career in the funeral profession begin and what inspired you to start your own family business?

Karen: My journey in the funeral profession began over a decade ago. After losing my own Mum at a young age, I was inspired to help other families through loss.

Having worked for a large corporate company for ten years, I really wanted to create a funeral service that’s free from sales targets and pressure. I wanted to build a place where the focus is 100% on care and compassion, where I can really dedicate my time to the families. That's why I wanted to do it myself – just to come back to Castleton, back to my roots, and be able to give families what I really needed the most when my mum passed away. It’s lovely to be working with my sister Dawn now too, who is a specialist nurse practitioner. At the heart of what we do is our commitment to the local community where we grew up.

Can you tell us a little about the premises in Castleton?

Yes our funeral home is set in the old Smith’s Bakery in the heart of Castleton. For us, it holds lots of happy memories of our childhood, as our mum would take us there for a meat and potato pie and a lemon bun! When the chance came up to open our funeral home in there, it felt like our journey had come full circle really. To be able to welcome families through those same doors and support them in a warm, welcoming space is such an honour. It’s a much bigger premises than it looks from the outside. We have a mortuary on site and a Chapel of Rest.

What sets your funeral home apart from others?

I would say the main thing is being able to give families the time and space they need. We offer a chapel of rest with no restrictions on visiting hours – if you want to come in the evening, weekends, we’re here for you 24/7. We've made it like a home-from-home and different from the typical funeral home. It's cosy, light, airy and modern.

How do you help families create a funeral that reflects the life of their loved one?

We listen carefully to create a service that honours your loved one, making sure it’s personal and meaningful. It’s the little things too – we buy candles for families to light whilst their loved one is in chapel and give them to the family afterwards so they can light them again on special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries. We’ll play their loved one’s favourite music in the chapel and give out personalised keepsakes at the end of the service. We also arranged a picture coffin recently for a gentleman who really loved sport. It’s about attention to detail and being able to truly reflect somebody’s life.

What would you say to someone who is daunted at the prospect of organising a loved one's funeral?

I would say, we’re here to take care of you and your loved one as we would our own family. We will walk you through everything and be there for support and guidance 24/7, not just 9-5 – if you need anything, anytime, we're here for you, even if you just want a shoulder to cry on.

What do you find most meaningful about your job?

I just find this job an absolute honour and privilege, supporting families through the hardest time of their lives. When you get families who turn around and say "oh, that was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be", it makes it all worthwhile. I've also had the privilege of assisting so many wonderful families in our community, and over time some of those families have become dear friends. That means the world to me and reminds me why I do this work.

DELVING INTO ROCHDALE'S HIDDEN HISTORY

Rochdale's landscape is full of secrets. Beyond the reservoirs and moorland views lie lost buildings, ancient sites and stories that rarely make it into history books. Local explorer and history enthusiast, Malc Grimwood has made it his mission to find them – and to show others that the past is often closer than we think. Malc brings these incredible stories to life by sharing them with thousands of viewers online via his popular YouTube channel 'Tales from Trails Around The Dales'.

Style: What first sparked your fascination with Rochdale’s hidden history and exploring the local area?

Malc: I’ve roamed the countryside above Syke on and off all my life. Even when I was younger I remember stumbling across piles of weather-beaten stones and thinking that they had once been people’s homes. That thought stayed with me. As I got older, the walking became more intentional. I started looking into the old trackways cutting across the moor, names of long gone farms and places on old maps, bits of broken walling where homes once stood. Once you realise that a single walk can take you past Bronze Age barrows, medieval routes, abandoned farms and industrial relics all in the space of a few miles… you’re hooked. It wasn’t about grand history at first, it was about the overlooked stuff. The human stories tied to bleak, beautiful places. Rochdale and the Pennines are absolutely steeped in it. You just have to slow down and look.

Where are your favourite local places to explore?

That’s always a tough one, but there are a few places up here that I keep finding myself drawn back to. Hades Hill barrow above Watergrove is right up there. There’s just something about the atmosphere on that mound. Knowing it’s a Bronze Age burial site gives the place a real, ancient weight to it. On a quiet morning, with the mist hanging low over the reservoir, it genuinely feels like you’re standing in a place where the past is very close to the surface. I never get tired of that.

Then there’s the Watergrove Valley, especially the areas where the old farms once stood before the area was flooded. That’s always been quite an emotional landscape for me. You’re walking ground that was once someone’s home, someone’s livelihood. When I did the lost farms piece, hearing from former residents really drove home just how important these places still are to people.

Healey Dell is another obvious favourite, though for slightly different reasons. It’s got that wonderful mix of industrial history, woodland, railway remnants and it’s accessible even on the days when my body isn’t playing ball. It proves you don’t always have to trek miles onto the high moor to find cracking history.

And more broadly, I’ll always have a soft spot for the moors above Syke and Whitworth. That’s where it all began for me really. Wandering up there as a kid, poking about in the ruins and wondering who’d lived there and what their lives were like.

What is the most unusual story you’ve uncovered?

The case of Gilbert Holden of Intake Farm springs to mind. His is exactly the sort of story that hooks me in and refuses to let go. The fact that a man living out on the Pennine fringe could end up hanged at Lancaster for coin counterfeiting in the early 1800s is amazing. That’s pure South Pennines history in a nutshell. Ordinary landscapes linked to extraordinary lives.

What fascinates me most is how these quiet farmsteads and ruined sites we walk past today were once tied into much bigger national dramas. Counterfeiting wasn’t some petty sideline back then, it was treated as a capital crime because it threatened the whole monetary system, and people were executed for it. It makes you look at the landscape differently. Intake Farm isn’t just another old place on a map or a pile of mossy stones. It was a stage where a real and desperate human story played out over 200 years ago.

Your recent videos on The Whitworth Doctors, Drowned Villages of Greenbooth Reservoir and The Hidden History of Healey Dell have attracted thousands of views on YouTube. What upcoming videos can we look forward to?

I have one planned which will cover the history of the Cheesden and Ashworth Valley, taking in the many mills and farms that once stood there. Also, I’ll be continuing my Drowned Village series with a video about the actual submerged village of Watergrove. I am currently writing for a video regarding the Cotton Famine Road and I also have plans for two videos, one covering the gruesome and another the spooky side of Rochdale.

In a world driven by fast content, you’ve created detailed 25 minute documentaries. What draws you to telling stories in such an in-depth way?

Nothing meaningful reveals itself in thirty seconds. I want viewers to feel like they’re actually walking there. Places like Watergrove, Healey Dell and the rest of the Pennines, they’ve got depth, and the stories deserve space to unfold naturally. There’s also the human side of it. When I did the lost farms piece and heard from former residents, it really hit home that this isn’t just content – it’s people’s memories and sometimes their childhood homes. You can’t rush that. You’ve got to handle it with a bit of care and respect.

The world’s full of bitesized clips now, and fair play, they’ve got their place. I’ll still be uploading the occasional bit of poetry which will be shorter but I’ve found there’s still a solid audience of folk who want to slow down, sink into a place, and properly understand what they’re looking at. Those are my people, really. In the end, I make the kind of films I’d want to watch myself.

The sort that let the past unfold at walking pace rather than motorway speed. For this subject matter that just feels right.

What advice would you give others who want to explore and start learning more about the area?

Start small. Pick somewhere local like Healey Dell, a stretch of moor above Syke, a reservoir edge. Walk it slowly. Look at the walls. Look at the ground. Notice where paths dip or where stone changes colour. The landscape leaves clues everywhere. Then go home and look at an old map of the same spot. You’ll be amazed what suddenly appears. Vanished farms, forgotten wells, old trackways that no longer exist. That’s usually how it begins. One small curiosity becomes a thread, and before long you’re knee-deep in records and archives.

Ask questions too and speak to older residents if you can. So much local history never made it into books, it survives in memories and anecdotes. Follow what genuinely interests you. Industrial ruins, folklore, Bronze Age barrows!

Most importantly, remember to respect the land. Leave things as you find them. Local history isn’t hidden in locked archives, it’s under your boots. You just have to slow down enough to see it.

SIGNO ALE SERVED IN PARLIAMENT

A special cask ale brewed to celebrate Rochdale's year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture has been given a national stage after being served in the House of Commons' Strangers' Bar.

The beer, called Signo, was created through a collaboration between independent brewers from across the borough, including Wakey Wakey Brew Co., Twisted Mule Brewery & Taphouse, Brid’s Cross Brew, Serious Brewing Company and Whitworth Valley Brewing.

The ale is already being poured in pubs across the borough, but local MPs, Paul Waugh and Elsie Blundell, arranged for it to reach Westminster so fellow parliamentarians could sample a taste of the borough.

Rochdale MP Paul Waugh said:

"It’s a real point of pride to see a beer brewed in Rochdale being poured in Parliament. Signo represents the creativity, collaboration and co-operative spirit that defines our borough during our year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture.

"I’m delighted colleagues from across the country can now experience a small taste of Rochdale."

Rochdale BID Manager Paul Ambrose added:

"It’s an incredible achievement to have Signo on tap in Parliament and a reflection of the growing ale offer we have in the town. It shows the strength of our local breweries and the fantastic choice now available for visitors and residents alike."

The name Signo comes from Rochdale’s Latin motto Crede Signo, meaning "Trust in this sign", making it a fitting tribute during a year celebrating the borough’s heritage, creativity and community spirit.

WARD 76

Ward 76 is a play written by disabled artist Sam Jamil and his mother Shirley and is rooted in their lived experience of Sam "growing up" in hospital.

The Merhaba Festival was one of the cultural events shortlisted for this year's Rochdale Culture Awards

Skylight Circus Arts will perform at FAB, a new youth arts festival in Rochdale

The play follows three teenage patients during an unexpected power outage in a hospital. Told from the perspective of young people, the story explores friendship, vulnerability, resilience and identity during a time of uncertainty. While it acknowledges fear and difficulty, the play also highlights humour, connection and hope.

Through humour, moments of horror and honest conversation, Ward 76 explores themes including anxiety, disability, loneliness, social media pressures and the realities of growing up in a medical environment.

The tour started in early March with two open performances at M6 Theatre and The Edge in Chorlton. The other thirteen performances will be held at various high schools around Rochdale, community centres, Manchester Children's Hospital and finishing at the Youth Festival at Rochdale Town Hall on Saturday 28 March. LIVE-IN CARE

Live in Care is proving to be a popular choice for those wanting a longer period of companionship than the hourly visits offer. This can be on a short or long term basis.

After a winter hospital stay, or when routines change, shortterm live-in can steady the days. Families often use this for two to four weeks to rebuild confidence, especially when half-term or work schedules make diaries tight. We handle handovers, equipment checks and simple notes so everyone knows what’s done and what’s next.

Did you know couples can also have live-in care together? We plan one shared routine with space for individual preferences – wake-up times, favourite meals, hobbies. A live-in care professional supports safe mobility, medication prompts and appointments, while helping each person keep their own pace and independence.

INSIDE HEYWOOD'S REVAMPED CIVIC

Heywood Civic opened its doors again in February following a major multi-million pound redevelopment.

The launch marked an exciting new chapter for the muchloved Rochdale venue as it reopened as a multi-purpose cultural and community hub.

Funded by Arts Council England, Rochdale Borough Council and Your Trust Rochdale, the redevelopment has transformed the civic building into a modern, accessible space that will host a full programme of events and community activity. The refreshed venue will offer comedy, theatre, music and much more, alongside a wide range of community-led events.

Events throughout March and April include puppetry adventures, inspirational theatre and Celtic-flavoured celebrations, ensuring there’s something to enjoy for every member of the community.

Alongside the events programme, Heywood Civic Centre also features a brand-new bar and kitchen, creating a welcoming social space at the heart of the building.

The investment has also seen improvements made to the auditorium and backstage facilities, while overall accessibility has been greatly enhanced.

The building now includes a lift to the first floor, accessible toilets on both the ground and first floors, a Changing Places facility, and a lift from ground to stage level for performers, ensuring the venue can be enjoyed and used by everyone.

Heywood Civic Centre is also the new home of arts charity Cartwheel Arts and will act as a key resource for local artist development programmes, supporting artists at all stages of their careers and helping nurture the next generation of creative talent in the borough.

Estelle Rowe, Chief Executive at Your Trust, said: "This relaunch is about much more than a building – it’s about creating a hub where communities can come together to work, connect and experience creativity in meaningful ways.

"The vision for Heywood Civic Centre is to deliver a fun, high-quality programme of events that is diverse, accessible and affordable for the people of Heywood and the wider Rochdale Borough.

"The venue will host a mix of commercial shows, community events and high-quality touring productions, ensuring there is something for everyone, while continuing to open culture to new audiences and support artists and young people to develop their skills."

ROYAL RECOGNITION

FOR HOPWOOD HALL COLLEGE PRINCIPAL & CEO

Hopwood Hall College Principal and CEO, Julia Heap, was recently awarded an OBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours list.

This prestigious accolade is in recognition of Julia’s outstanding contributions to skills and Further Education.

Hopwood Hall, which has campuses in Middleton and Rochdale, has seen remarkable growth under Julia’s leadership – sparked by her fervent commitment to widening participation for people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

It’s this commitment that led to the college being presented with the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2024 for its traumainformed approach to widening participation.

Julia began her own career 30 years ago as a 22-year-old apprentice in Oldham; an experience that shaped her outlook on education and the ways it could be used to transform lives.

The mum-of-three has since become a passionate advocate for technical education, apprenticeships, skills-based training and lifelong learning.

For Julia, the recognition is the culmination of a 30-year journey that has seen her go from apprentice, to principal and CEO, to Officer of the Order of the British Empire:

Julia commented:

"I am truly humbled to receive this honour, which is thanks to the unwavering support I receive from a community of staff who can always be relied upon to go above and beyond for our students at Hopwood Hall College.

"Undoubtedly, education has the power to change lives; it changed mine as an adult apprentice – and for that I’ll always be a passionate advocate for the transformative impact of gaining new skills at any stage of life.

"There really is so much brilliant work taking place across the borough and this is being achieved through such strong collaboration from so many different people and organisations in Rochdale and North East Manchester.

"I’m delighted to be playing a role in raising aspirations alongside such incredible colleagues, governors, employer partners, and, of course, the brilliant students who are the heart and soul of our college community."

SCHOOLS LAUNCH ECO REFILL SHOPS

TO TACKLE PLASTIC POLLUTION

Three local schools, Belfield Community Primary School, Heap Bridge Village Primary School, and Castleton Primary School, have put their entrepreneurial skills to the test and boosted their green credentials, by opening eco refill shops for the first time.

The shops provide products like shampoo, body wash, and laundry liquid for refilling, encouraging parents, teachers, and the community to cut down on single-use plastics by bringing their own containers. The venture has been made possible by funding from the GMCA’s eco refill programme in partnership with Pupil Profit and Rochdale Borough Council.

These new initiatives build on previous successes, including at Marland Hill Community Primary and St Peter’s RC Primary, who launched their shops in 2024. Hamer Community Primary School also launched their eco shop last year.

Each year, UK households dispose of approximately 90 billion pieces of plastic packaging, amounting to more than two million metric tons of waste. If it isn’t reused or recycled, dumped plastic can be very damaging to the climate and take centuries to break down.

WHEN THE RED SHOES CAME TO ROCHDALE THE

1958 BY-ELECTION

Style Magazine wisely avoids discussing party politics, but the 1958 Rochdale by-election was important for several reasons. It was the first televised by-election –something that we take for granted these days where we expect the likes of the BBC's Chris Mason or ITV's Robert Peston to stand inside a civic building while the voting count is underway! This first happened in Rochdale following the death of Lt Colonel Wentworth Schofield, the Conservative MP for the town on December 16th 1957.

The Liberal Party candidate for the Rochdale by-election was Ludovic Kennedy, a journalist in his late 30s who had worked for Newsweek magazine, television and BBC radio. Kennedy knew that any media coverage would help his electoral campaign and was therefore delighted when Granada Television obtained permission to cover the by-election with two televised debates and in-depth reporting. The BBC, not to be left behind, also showed up in Rochdale, conducting a "vox pop" with people outside the Town Hall. We must remember that this sort of television coverage was a new phenomenon. An American television news team even came over to cover the by-election!

Ludovic Kennedy was married to the actress Moira Shearer who had trained as a ballet dancer from an early age. Shearer became known internationally in her first film role in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's balletthemed picture, The Red Shoes, in 1948 where she played the role of Victoria Page. A central element of the film is the seventeen minute dance sequence, "The Ballet of Red Shoes" which took nearly six weeks to film. The Red Shoes received wide critical acclaim and was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Art Direction. A few years ago, the film was digitally restored, a painstaking process that worked on about half a million separate images. No less than film director Martin Scorsese was involved in this process who declared that it was "the movie that played in my heart". The entire film is available to

In 1949 Shearer met Ludovic Kennedy at a fancy dress ball and he recalled: "I felt a tremor run through me when I caught sight of her. She looked even lovelier than in the film." The story goes that he asked Shearer to dance and she said that she didn't dance very well! Shearer, of course, meant ballroom dancing! The couple married the following year in the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace and went on to have one son and three daughters.

A large number of politicians came to the town including former prime minister, Earl Atlee and future prime minister Harold Wilson. A room in the Town Hall was even turned into a temporary television studio!

At the adoption meeting of the Liberal candidate, Shearer declared that she was no "butterfly brain" but a loyal wife, supporting her husband. She was presented with a bouquet of red carnations. During the by-election campaign, Shearer accompanied Kennedy around the Rochdale constituency and her glamorous appearance and striking red hair enhanced many photo opportunities. This was a new type of electioneering! Throughout the campaign, she referred to herself as "Mrs Kennedy". Film stars rarely came to Rochdale, especially ones as striking as Moira Shearer.

It is hard to imagine what Rochdale was like nearly 70 years ago. The town had no less than eight cinemas and live music was the order of the day from Chas McDevitt's Skiffle Group at the Empire to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at Champness Hall. Television was in its infancy (with only two channels, BBC1 and ITV) and not every home had a television set.

On polling day, February 13th 1958, Labour's Jack McCann won the seat with 22,133 votes. However, Kennedy's total of 17,603 was not that far behind and was a huge increase on any Liberal vote in Rochdale since the 1920s.

As well as being a journalist and television presenter, Kennedy was a tireless campaigner on miscarriages of justice, not least the 10 Rillington Place murders where Timothy Evans was wrongly hanged for killings committed by John Christie. Kennedy's book on the case was later made into a film starring Richard Attenborough and John Hurt. Ludovic Kennedy and Moira Shearer were married for over 55 years; she died in 2006. Kennedy died in 2009. He had been knighted in 1994 for services to journalism.

Jack McCann served as Rochdale's MP for the next 14 years. His death in 1972 created another by-election which again – for totally different reasons – created much press and television coverage. Do any of our more senior Style readers remember the 1958 by-election? Did any of you see Moira Shearer pounding the pavements alongside her journalist husband? I wonder what colour shoes was she wearing! Please email us at features@rochdalestyle.com.

SINGING TOGETHER CANTARE CHOIR WELCOME NEW VOICES

Have you ever found yourself singing along in the car, humming while you make a brew, or belting out a favourite song when nobody’s listening? If so, you’re already halfway to being a member of Cantare Ladies choir.

The choir are always happy to welcome new members – and you don’t need to be able to read music, have sung in a choir before or sound like a West End star! What you do need is a love of music, a willingness to have a go, and an interest in meeting a group of women who enjoy singing together.

Chair, Jackie Holt said: "One of the wonderful things about singing is how good it makes you feel. It lifts your mood, helps you breathe more deeply, and gives your brain a bit of a workout too! Many of us come to rehearsal tired from the day and leave happier and energised. It’s hard to worry about everything else when you’re concentrating on the next note!

"Cantare is about enjoying music together, supporting one another and sharing the sheer pleasure of singing as part of a group. We sing everything from Bach to Beethoven, Beatles and beyond."

Rehearsals are relaxed and friendly with time to chat over a brew halfway through. Just turn up Wednesdays 7.30pm9.30pm at Norden Methodist Church, Edenfield Road, Norden or contact Jackie Holt via email : jackieholt810@live.co.uk.

RUNNING FOR DAD: 246 MILES IN SIX DAYS

Two runners are taking on an extraordinary challenge to raise funds for Springhill Hospice.

In April 2026, Alex and James will run the London Marathon in honour of Alex’s dad, Darren, whose final days were spent under the care of Springhill Hospice. As well as running the 2026 London Marathon; they’ll also be running all the way from Rochdale to London to complete it!

Setting off on Tuesday 21 April from Springhill Hospice, the pair will run 220 miles over five days, arriving in London on Saturday, before lining up for the Marathon the following day. In total, they will cover an astonishing 246 miles in six days. The pair are aiming to raise £26,000 to support Springhill Hospice’s vital work.

Alex’s dad, Darren, was just 45 when he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2012. Fit, active and full of life, his diagnosis came as a devastating shock to his family. At the time, they were told that one in three people diagnosed with MND would die within a year. But Darren lived well for eight years after his diagnosis, defying the odds until January 2020, when he finally needed the support of Springhill Hospice.

Alex said: "The care given to my dad and our family was incredible, which made the most traumatic time of our lives that bit easier. Springhill Hospice is a pillar of our community and we need to do everything we can to keep the doors open."

That experience would go on to shape Alex’s future. In February 2024, Alex joined Springhill Hospice as Head of Income Generation and Marketing, helping to ensure the hospice can continue to provide vital care to others who need it most.

Springhill Hospice is celebrating a record-breaking success following its annual Reindeer Run community fundraiser, which has raised an incredible £71,039.06.

The much-loved event brought together hundreds of supporters from across the community – including 50 local schools and nurseries – all donning reindeer antlers to run, walk, and jog in support of local hospice care. Funds raised will go directly towards providing specialist palliative care for patients and their loved ones across the borough, ensuring that Springhill Hospice can continue delivering compassionate, high-quality services free of charge.

Jenna, Community Fundraiser at Springhill Hospice, said: "It’s truly incredible to see the generosity of our schools and nurseries. Watching them come together for this event, and seeing it grow year on year, has been so inspiring. Thank you to each and every person who donated, supported, and took part.
