Style caught up with Mike Miller (Danny Zuko) and Fayhe-Louise Mitchell (Sandy Dumbrowski), from Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (RMTC) ahead of Grease The Musical arriving in Rochdale Town Centre this spring!

Style: How does it feel to step into such iconic roles?

Fayhe (Sandy): Quite surreal to be honest!

Grease is one of my mum's favourite films so growing up we had it on tape and watched it a lot (along with my mum singing “Sandy, can’t you see, I’m in misery…” at the top of her lungs). I also feel I have a duty on my shoulders to ensure I do the role justice with Sandy being such an icon. I can’t wait to bring her to life on stage, especially boss Sandy!

Mike (Danny): I think every man growing up at one point or another thought of himself as a bit of a ‘Danny Zuko’ or aspired to be like him. It has been a bucket list role for me since performing in my first ever musical as Kenickie back in 2019 and I am extremely excited to be able to make it happen! Danny Zuko is both confident and charismatic but also has a softer and more loveable side and I can’t wait to bring that to the stage.

different to the film, Sandy does not go to the dance but I absolutely love watching that dance number being rehearsed! The dancing and choreography is incredible!

Mike: I can honestly say I’ve never been involved in a show where the cast has gelled so quickly. The production team are fantastic to work with as well which makes our job as performers so much easier. I have known about RMTC for a couple of years and always had the opinion that it’s a fun and welcoming society and I can confirm that this is true! If you’re intrigued or would like to get involved, this a great place to take that leap in a future show!

What can people expect from RMTC’s production of Grease?

Fayhe: Everything you would want and more!

All of the iconic songs you can sing along with, the big dance numbers and some extra little surprises thrown in there!

So you were both big fans of Grease before you auditioned for RMTC?

Mike: The only three things you would ever want or need from a production of Grease:

Fayhe: Yes I have always loved it! The pink ladies were and still are my favourite characters! Along with Eugene - bless him!

Mike: I remember closing my bedroom door and screaming ‘Greased Lightnin’ at the top of my lungs as a young boy so yes, I have always been a fan. I was always a little bit gutted that I wasn’t in a group at High School or College like the T-Birds but hey, this is as close as I’m going to get and that’ll do for me.

Tell us an interesting fact about you...

Are rehearsals as much fun as we imagine?

Fayhe: Yes! Everyone is so lovely and we have such a laugh! I love rehearsals even if we’re working on a number that I’m not needed for. As the musical is ever so slightly

Fayhe: I’ve represented England both as a coach/choreographer and an athlete at the USASF and ICU All Star Cheerleading and Dance World Championships in Disneyworld, Florida a few times!

Mike: At least once a month, me and my fiancée have a heated debate due to the fact she believes Grease 2 is better than the original Grease and… IT JUST ISN’T TRUE!

Favourite line from the show…

Fayhe: My favourite which I say is “tell me about it… stud” however, my favourite line is so random but it tickles me everytime. It’s right at the beginning and it’s the T birds Doody - “Hey rump, I'll swap you half a sardine for a liver sausages” Mike: “Thanks a lot, kid.” - Kenickie The first time you see a crack in Kenickie’s character and really cuts through like a knife.

Favourite song from the show…

Fayhe: This is a hard question! As much as I love You’re The One That I Want and Sandy, my favourite song didn’t actually make the film version - well it did but in a different context - it's Doody’s song with his guitar “Those Magic Changes”.

Mike: It would be easy to say ‘You’re The One That I Want’ or ‘Greased Lightnin’ but my favourites are ones that you may not have heard before due to them not making the film. ‘Mooning’ and ‘Freddy My Love’ are definitely my favourite songs and the vocals on these by our cast are just superb!

Why should people buy tickets?

Fayhe: If I wasn’t in this production I would 100% have my tickets booked for a night out with my friends and the prosecco on ice. It’s so much fun, such a feel good show and I think everybody can relate to the characters in one way or another.

Mike: Because you can be guaranteed you are going to love the music, the characters, the storyline and I’m sure there will be moments during the show that will jog a memory or two from the first time you ever saw the film. How many other musicals can guarantee you that?

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL PROCESS FOR IMPLANT TREATMENT?

WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?

Initially a consultation visit is made where you can discuss your needs and perform a detailed examination of your mouth. We would also take any X rays or other records at this stage. Following a 3D Xray (CBCT scan) taken in house, we would proceed to the surgery.

After a healing period of approximately 3 months, your implant(s) will be restored with a crown, bridge or denture. Treatment is usually completed in around 4 and 12 months depending on complexity.

A dental implant is the most tooth like replacement for a missing tooth. They can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. The titanium implant is a bit like a screw and is surgically placed in the jawbone, replacing the tooth root, and is attached to a dental crown, bridge or denture depending on your individual needs.

HOW LONG WILL AN IMPLANT LAST?

WHO CAN HAVE DENTAL IMPLANTS? Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible for dental implant treatment to restore their smile, provided they are in good general and dental health and have adequate remaining jawbone. Even where bone loss has occurred we have procedures which can help rebuild it.

There is no upper age limit for dental implant treatment. In-fact, in patients struggling to eat and speak with loose conventional dentures, implant solutions are life changing.

You can expect your dental implant solution to survive up to 25 years depending on maintenance of excellent oral hygiene regime, good general health and regular review with your dentist and hygienist. Implants, like teeth need to be maintained, as they can be susceptible to gum disease.

Did you know that at 9am every Sunday there are FREE running events held for children in local parks and open spaces across the country.

Hollingworth Lake is only a short drive out of Rochdale town centre, but it feels like you're on your hols! The walk around is so picturesque, but is also only slightly more than 2 miles, so is perfect for adults and “really tired” children alike.

My kids LOVE IT! I’m not sure if it’s the fun warm-up, the fantastic encouragement, the incentive of milestone wristbands or the trying to beat their times, but each week we are there with bells on (usually in a mad hectic rush… with adrenaline pumping before the run has even begun)!

There is a playground half way round and a cafe along the route to keep them happy… and even an amusement arcade at the end!

You can also sometimes take a boat trip on the Lady Katherine and -as the weather warms up - hire a self-drive boat, pedalo or even a stand up paddle board if you are feeling brave! Visit: www.yourtrustrochdale.co.uk/ venues/hollingworth-lake-water-activity-centre/ for more details.

For an alternative, quieter walk you could head down past the new RSPCA centre and The Woodlands Cafe (where the old visitor centre used to be) and venture into Ealees across lovely fields alongside a stream.

In the borough of Rochdale we are lucky enough to have two Junior Parkruns; one in Milnrow Memorial Park and one in Queens Park in Heywood.

Junior Parkrun is 2 kilometres long with both Milnrow and Queens Park including some steep hills, so - if you decide to run alongside your children - it is actually a proper workout!

You don’t need to run with them though - you can just spectate and wait at the finish line. The events are very well-marshalled, meaning that noone can get lost and that someone is always on hand in case of any slips or falls.

It's home to “the world’s largest working steam mill engine” which is in steam on the first Sunday of every month.

I cannot get over how much my little boy enjoyed his visit. He was absolutely fascinated in the foundry, and stood still for a good 25 minutes watching horse shoes be made! He loved seeing the coal be shovelled into the boiler and was mesmerised watching the flames. True to its title, the engine itself is HUGE and - be warned - when it first starts it makes a lot of noise and a large cloud of steam… cue a lot of excited screaming!

You can book a pod in either the shallow end or the deep end… we opted for shallow. It's a great way to build confidence and means that you know your children aren’t going to get splashed or squashed by someone else jumping in.

The “fun pods” also have a lot of floats and toys available for you to play with so we had games of catch, surf board races️ and water pistol attacks.

ROCHDALE PIONEERS MUSEUM • Toad Lane, Rochdale, OL12 0NU • There are a number of car parks close by, including on Hunters Lane (OL16 1YL) and Reed Hill (OL16 1DX) • The museum is FREE… but donations welcome • A 10 minute walk from Touchstones The building is regarded as the birthplace of the good old Co-op, and as you enter you will find a replica of the original shop, which simply involved a plank of wood lain across two barrels and basically some flour, butter and milk… there were no frozen ready-meals to be had back then!

The museum tells the story of the modern co-operative movement, and its significant impact on societal reform. It's amazing when you realise the influence of the Rochdale Pioneers on issues such as fair trade, women’s rights and education… something our town should be proud of.

Whilst you are digesting all the interesting information, your kids can also be inadvertently learning by filling in the trail sheets (currently there is a pigeon trail) or, if they are younger, playing in the pretend Victorian shop.

My kids spent a good hour or so counting out eggs and weighing vegetables on the scales, whilst dressed in suitable (and very cute) attire!

Fiona: Thank you! I’m so pleased to be celebrating the second birthday of my company. When I started the business in early 2021, my aim was to educate local people about the importance of Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney. I wanted to provide an affordable, easy, friendly at home service to help people get professionally written Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney.

Two years on, I’m proud to say I’ve done just that and lots more. I’m lucky to have been able to help so many people of various ages and circumstances.

I want to thank all of my clients for their support over the last two years especially those that have taken the time to give their feedback on my services. I’ve now got sixty Google reviews, all rating my service as five star and I’m made up with their comments. They help me to measure the level of service that I provide as the same comments come up over and over again.

What's the best aspect of your job?

I love my job. I say it’s a job, but it’s so much more than that, it’s a privilege to help people with their Will as it is one of the most important documents they will ever make in life.

No two Wills are the same which means that every day is different.

Most people want to provide for their spouse, their children and grandchildren. Some have an unmarried partner and want to ensure that they are provided for. Lots want to ensure treasured or valuable personal belongings go to the right person. Many people take comfort in protecting the family home, usually their most valuable asset. A Property Trust in their Will ensures their children inherit their share of the home should the surviving spouse get married, go into care, get into financial difficulty or even change their Will.

What are your future plans for the business?

I plan to continue with my mission to spread awareness about the importance of Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney. My goal for this year though is to concentrate on raising the awareness of the importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney.

Most people know why a Will is important but unfortunately, not enough people understand why Lasting Powers of Attorney are just as vital.

These are documents in which you say who you want to be your voice if you lose the ability to make your own decisions through illness or injury.

In March 2021, Kate Garraway a well-known TV presenter on ITV’s Good Morning Britain tried to raise awareness about Lasting Powers of Attorney when her husband Derek got covid and was in a long- term coma and unable to make his own decisions about his finances and health. Derek didn’t have any Lasting Powers of Attorney in place so his difficult battle with covid was further complicated.

Kate said: "One of the practical problems – like many things, the car is entirely in Derek’s name, the insurance is in Derek’s name, a lot of our bank accounts. There are lots of financial goings on which are making life very complicated because I can’t get access to things because legally, I haven’t got Power of Attorney."

I’d love everyone who’s over 18 to make Lasting Powers of Attorneys, no matter their age or state of health because unfortunately we just don’t know what’s around the corner and should you become ill or injured in the future, your loved ones will have one less thing to worry about.

Rochdale actress stars in eyebrow-raising ad campaign A new McDonald’s advert is being called ‘genius’ after people realised it doesn’t even feature a product or restaurant - just some hungry colleagues raising their eyebrows and heading out of the office in sync.

How long did it take to film and was it as much fun as it looks?

Style caught up with Phoebe to find out all about the catchy new ad...

It took just short of a week to film. We had a rehearsal day working with Edgar and Jenny practicing some of the trickier shots and getting familiar with the music. Every beat was choreographed and had to be very specific. After the rehearsal day, we had a day off where all of the set was built, then we spent four days filming on a tight schedule.

It was the most fun I’ve ever had on a job.

The cast and crew were all so lovely and supportive; everyone there was working to the best of their ability and we were all so invested in making the commercial nothing short of perfection. I met some incredible people and had the best time, we laughed non-stop!

How did it feel to get the part in such a huge commercial?

Was it tricky walking down the steps in sync?

I was so, so, SO excited. I realised pretty early on that this wasn’t going to be a regular commercial! Once I found out Edgar Wright was directing it and Jennifer White was in charge of movement direction, I knew it was going to be special. I admire their work so much, so getting to work with them was out of this world. The audition process was much longer than typical commercial castings too, so when I finally got told the role was mine, I was over the moon!

It took a lot of rehearsal and a lot of patience from Jenny and Tom, our choreographer and assistant choreographer!

It was also raining that day, so there was a lot of running in and out of the building, trying to get a good take in the couple of minutes between rain showers. It was hilarious chaos which slowed things down, but we got there eventually and ended up with such an impressive shot with around 200 of us walking down those steps.

The advertising campaign is built around the idea that an invite to grab a Maccie D's can be communicated with a mere eyebrow wiggle.

One of the commercial's hungry office workers is Rochdale actress Phoebe Coop whose first ever job as a teenager was at McDonalds Sandbrook Park!

Edgar Wright is known for directing box office hits such Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and World’s End - what was it like to work with him?

It was an incredible experience. Edgar is a genius in filmmaking and directing, I learnt so much from working with him. He’s also extremely kind and humble, he knew everyone’s names on set from the get-go and worked really closely with everyone to ensure we were all happy and able to give it our all. He’s my favourite film director, so experiencing him work and seeing the magic of how he creates such exciting film was unbelievable.

What do you hope to work on next?

At the moment I’m seeing where life takes me. There’s always so many exciting opportunities so I’m working with my agent to find which feels like the right one. I definitely hope to do more TV and film work, I love being on set and feel very at home in that environment.

Finally… What’s your McDonald's order?

The hash browns!!! I absolutely love them. I wish they did them all day and not just for breakfast. Although I’d probably never eat anything else ever again!

What's On in the Arts In Rochdale we are lucky to have many inspirational members of the creative arts community. Local people who not only excel in their creativity but also provide opportunities for us to engage in a wide range of activities as participants and audience members.

One shining example is SEAMUS KELLY - poet, writer, artist, and tutor, who comes from the Nottingham but has lived and worked around Rochdale for the last 33 years.

As a writer Seamus says that “To write well we must spend more time thinking than actually writing, and more time yet editing and refining our work. If your writing is to matter then you need to write about things that matter, that is things that matter to the writer personally. That’s why I tend to write about the environment, the places, and people we meet, family and of course society and politics. Sometimes poetry is the best way I can express myself when dealing with difficult and painful issues like loss, war, and our own mortality; as a writer I cannot shy away from those things because they matter. Writing is a very personal business, nobody can tell you what to write, but all of us can benefit from the inspiration, guidance, and encouragement of others.”

As a poet he first became involved in writing groups and performance when Rochdale Library, then at The Wheatsheaf Centre, provided a room and some support for a new writing group in Rochdale. Having been a founder member of the group he went on to lead it for a number of years before stepping back to give more time to writing projects.

More recently he has retired from teaching to concentrate on his creative work and to support others, of all ages, with their creative journeys including running poetry and creative writing workshops for children aged 5 to 12 with YourTrust during school holidays and offering a range of workshops to schools. Seamus also supports young people to build resilience through creativity at Vibe Youth Music.

He has worked with Falinge Park Writing Group, the Writers on Tap group (previously Touchstones Creative Writing Group) and lead a 2022 project in Littleborough, with Elizabeth White, titled “Poetry in the Park” with a series of poetry writing workshops.

As well as writing his poetry which is mainly aimed at adults, Seamus has recently been writing stories for children and is currently working on illustrations.

Seamus says “I’m really pleased that my children’s stories have been very well received by young people on the HAF sessions in the school holidays over the last couple of years. Writing for children is important; it helps develop their own storytelling and imaginations – where else would they be able to meet a lost flamingo chick, a pet T-Rex, whales, wolves, or aliens without having to travel or watch a screen?!”

Forthcoming writing events: Poetry in the Park, April 22nd – a one day poetry event with poetry writing workshops in the morning from Seamus, Eileen Earnshaw and Gaia Holmes followed by an afternoon talk by James Nash.

Writers on Tap meet on the first Thursday of each month in The Medicine Tap, Rochdale from 2.00pm to 4.00pm with professional facilitators bring new workshops every month.

Poets on Tap is an open mic poetry session that runs every 1st/2nd Sunday of the month from 7.00pm to 9.30pm. Both performers and listeners are very welcome and there is likely to be music and singing too.

Falinge Park Writing Group meet weekly from 10am to noon at the house in Falinge Park, Rochdale.

Heywood Scribblers with Katie Haigh runs at Heywood Library on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 1pm to 3pm.

Ebor Studio's billboard programme is a way for its members to explore new formats for their work. Each artist is given freedom to create their own design which is installed and displayed on the side of the Ebor Studio building for around two months.

Alison Cooper's billboard design was installed in early March reflecting on her research project, 'Ways of Listening'. The design responds to a body of research undertaken in the depths of covid lockdowns in 2021.

Alison explains, "During this unusual and surreal time in our lives I reached out to ask, 'how do people listen in their many different ways?'. From music, spoken word, prepared sound or the found sounds like the birds which surround us daily.

"At this time of extreme separation, I was able to find connection through the inquisitive nature of the project. I was able to connect with people about their own unique and individual experience of sound and their hearing rituals.

"As the 'Ways of Listening' project developed it became more poignant, containing one of the last communications between myself and a friend (who passed away). The channels of communication became multi layered. On the one hand I had been enquiring with individuals about their personal listening experiences for the project but also opening up a two way conversation, an act of deep listening and receiving of information between friends, in this strange and unfamiliar world of separation. This last interaction with my friend later informed a collective group listening experience, during the act of mourning.

"This brought me to think further about how although we may 'hear' something, to 'listen' is to give our full attention to everything which is around us.

"The design of the billboard uses letterpress hand printed versions of the word 'listening' positioned to replicate the undulating repeating pattern of a sine wave. This sonic and mathematical pattern is a visual representation of sound waves which are cyclical in nature."

For the singers amongst us, now in its 6th year, Sing! Littleborough has been relaunched with the support of Coronation Street's SUE DEVANEY. The group was founded in October 2017 by Rochdale-based musician, teacher, and choir leader PHIL REYNOLDS to meet demand from local singers for a non-audition community pop choir.

Prior to having to move online during lockdowns in 2020, the choir had performed in many events including the ‘With One Voice’ event in Albert Square to commemorate the anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack, broadcast on BBC to millions of viewers worldwide.

Members had also taken part in two Christmas broadcasts live on air for Heart Radio, several video shoots and a host of local events, including the first ‘Little Glastonboro’ festival, food festivals, charity events and Christmas Light events.

During lockdown, the choir had to move online and numbers sadly dwindled; the choir’s original venue (The Falcon Inn) closed its doors and singing nationally was demonised by some rather questionable science (later proved to be largely inaccurate).

Phil set up an online group of over 100 members on Facebook, in addition to setting up WhatsApp groups to try and keep in touch with and support choir members during the pandemic. This included an online Christmas Zoom Concert in 2020.

Despite having a ‘post covid’ fundraising Gala Concert at Manchester Cathedral (for the NSPCC) in 2021 the choir has been on a short hiatus since July 2022 whilst a new venue was secured.

Choir member Cath Bradbury described the choir as "a well-loved, friendly community choir, that sings pop, rock and show songs. An ideal opportunity to try out singing in choir... with no auditions, ever!"

To join the choir all you need to take along is your singing voice (no need to read music or audition!) and a sense of humour – and a friend or two if you like! 7-9pm at Littleborough Cricket Club.

TOUCHSTONES ROCHDALE REVEALS 80S THEMED INNOVATIVE EXHIBITION In the 1980s, Touchstones Rochdale was known as the Rochdale Art Gallery and its bold approach to exhibition and education programming positioned it on the national map.

Touchstones is showcasing a look back at the legacy of the 1980s exhibition programme from Rochdale Art Gallery in the new exhibition A Tall Order! this Spring.

Originally led by Jill Morgan alongside a small and changing team in the 1980s, Rochdale Art Gallery showcased pioneering work that commented on major social and political events.

Touchstones is presenting many of these works in the new exhibition which gives visitors a unique look back in time and celebrates the small, civic gallery in the North.

The exhibition has been created in collaboration with Touchstones Rochdale and two independent research curators, Derek Horton and Alice Correia, and has took over all four gallery spaces.

Derek Horton, co-curator of A Tall Order! said: “There was so much happening during the 1980s, it was a radical time for Britain as it faced major social and political events.

“The vision for this exhibit was to shine a light on artworks that framed the decade so well, including those that may have caused an uproar at the time.

“Jill Morgan and her team at Rochdale Art Gallery were courageous and groundbreaking in the 80s, and created a space for previously marginalised or excluded artists to articulate their own experiences through a medium they knew best.

“The vision of A Tall Order! was to create an impact of our own through the expressions of art, both past and present, demonstrating that galleries still have the potential to become a tool for social change.”

Exploring themes of Work and Labour; Land and our Environment; Rochdale at the Heart of Everything; and Power, Identity, and Representation, A Tall Order! provides a creative nod to the themes of the 80s, and what was known at the time as ‘issuesbased’ art.

This exhibit includes works shown by well-known artists of the 80s including Terry Atkinson, Sutapa Biswas, Sonia Boyce, Sarah Edge, Susan Hiller, Lubaina Himid, John Hyatt, and Stephen Willats, and also highlights works from Touchstones Rochdale’s permanent collection, including pieces by William Hogarth and Vanessa Bell.

A Tall Order is at Touchstones Rochdale until 6th May 2023.

Former church transformed into arts & events space A Grade II listed church has been transformed into an arts, culture and events space, nestled in the heart of Bacup.

Formerly St John The Evangelist Church, the iconic building, built in 1877 is now the home of The Circle, an exciting multi-use venue which is proving popular with locals and visitors from across the UK.

The project is the brainchild of valley resident and Church owner Fouad (Freddy) Khattab. He has brought together a team of like-minded people who live or work in the area in order to set up the new organisation and describes the church as: "A building of great heritage, architecture and history, which I am honoured to have as my home. Since moving to Lancashire in 2015 I have been inspired by many stories from people who used to worship at St Johns. From this and the passion I have for the Church, I felt that it would be a rewarding and fantastic journey to once again open it up for the community and visitors to enjoy events and the wonderful new landscaped garden of the church, located in the heart of Bacup which I believe has a great future ahead."

They are also in the process of applying to become a licensed wedding venue with Lancashire County Council and will then be able to host non-religious ceremonies within the stunning church setting and grounds.

The recent wedding fayre showcased The Circle as a fabulous wedding venue alongside fantastic local wedding suppliers and celebrants.

Freddy commented: "I am so overwhelmed with all the positive comments and support. I was not expecting it to snowball like this and it makes me feel so proud and happy that the project is bringing people from all over the UK. "If you haven’t already visited, you need to see the building in person. No matter how much I talk about it, you won’t believe how beautiful it is until you see it for yourself."

REVIEW: FIREGROUND CAFE I had already visited the Fireground museum pre-Covid and met Bob Bonner and his colleagues who had shown me round this fascinating attraction. This time I just wanted a hot drink and some breakfast after an appointment at Nye Bevan House across the road. The sign on the windows and door of the Fireground Cafe said “Under New Management”.

Fireground Cafe is now open from 8am to 1pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; on Thursdays and Fridays the cafe opens at the same time but closes at 4pm. On Saturdays there is a later opening – 10 am - and closure at 4pm. The museum is open from 10am to 4pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

At the cafe there is an inviting breakfast section with croissants, toast and bacon, sausage and bacon and avocado sandwiches.

There are also cold sandwiches for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans and a selection of toasties.

Children are well catered for with their own sandwiches and toasties and ice creams are also on offer.

There is a full range of coffees with the option of extra flavours and the cafe's award winning bakes. Teas, hot chocolate and cold drinks are available. Prices are better value than most national chains of cafes.

My bacon buttie was excellent with lots of tasty bacon. I am a mustard fan and I hope that my next visit will see this condiment provided (hint, hint!). While I was in the cafe, a steady stream of customers came in, some en route to the adjacent museum, some like me – just passing through.

Fireground's unique setting just across the road from Rochdale railway station should ensure good passing trade. The cafe felt like my sort of place; no loud music, nor smells of burnt panini nor sign of loitering “characters”! If I spend money in the “hospitality sector”, I expect quality food and drink, excellent service and a pleasant atmosphere. Fireground Cafe more than meets my requirements.

A week later, I made a return visit to the cafe and spoke with the new manager, Danny O'Neill. Danny and his partner also run the well established Busy Beans Coffee Shop in Littleborough so Fireground are in safe hands. The new set up is working well and Danny already has plans to extend the menu. When I mentioned the matter of mustard, I was assured that purchasing this English condiment is on their “to do” list! To be fair, the new management have only been operating for a week and with that being my one and only complaint, they're not going far wrong! If you are visiting Rochdale's newest (and, in my opinion, finest and friendliest) museum, why not include popping into the cafe? If you are catching – or have caught – a train, tram or bus at Rochdale Station, try the Fireground Cafe. I am glad that I did. By using the cafe, you are not only supporting a local, independent business, but also supporting the important work of the museum.

HISTORY: WHEN NEW ORDER PLAYED ROCHDALE New Order are one of the UK's most successful and durable bands. They were founded in 1980 by the three surviving members of Joy Division after the tragic death of singer Ian Curtis.

New Order are perhaps most famous for their best selling 12 inch single Blue Monday and their 1990 football song World In Motion (featuring a rap by John Barnes) which topped the British charts.

One of their first ever gigs was in Rochdale.

Ian Curtis had died on May 1980 on the eve of Joy Division's first American tour.

Understandably, the tour was cancelled.

Curtis's death was a huge blow to his bandmates, family and many, many fans.

He was an effective, if unlikely, frontman for a band as surviving television footage shows. The band's famous single, Love Will Tear Us Apart was a Top Twenty hit soon after.

The band were at something of a crossroads and eventually changed their name to New Order.

New Order went from being a trio to a quartet with the addition of Gillian Gilbert on keyboards and occasional guitar.

Gillian had grown up in the same street in Macclesfield as drummer Stephen Morris and was his girlfriend. She had been in her own punk rock band, The Inadequates and had attended many Joy Division gigs.

By joining New Order, Gillian's presence allowed Bernard to concentrate more on his singing.

At this time the popular music scene had very few female musicians in (the largely male) bands – the names that spring to mind are American Tina Weymouth, bassist in Talking Heads and Australian Lindy Morrison, drummer in The Go -Betweens.

Women in rock and pop tended to be solo, lead or backing singers. None of New Order's contemporaries such as Depeche Mode, Japan, Simple Minds, Teardrop Explodes, Echo & The Bunnymen and Public Image Ltd had a female musician in their ranks. There were some all female bands that had sprung from the punk era such as The Runaways, The Slits and The Go-Go's. So Gillian Gilbert's role in New Order was highly unusual and significant.

New Order's concert on Friday 19th December 1980 at Rochdale College – the same building on St Mary's Gate that is now known as Hopwood Hall College – was presumably in the main hall.

I remember attending public meetings there in the early 1980s. This is roughly where the Riverside Salon is now situated.

Promoted by the council's entertainments department, tickets costs just £1. The support band were another Factory band, Crispy Ambulance whose singer, Alan Hempsall had once stood in for Ian Curtis at a gig in Bury.

On a band fan forum, one David Allison writes “Great night. Tony Wilson was drunk and I was young and more into punk so who was this band playing this music?”

(Tony Wilson was, of course, the Granada Television presenter who also ran Factory Records and later helped set up The Hacienda.)

The Rochdale gig's set list is also provided on the New Order website; the band played nine songs including two future singles – Procession and Ceremony. These were both Top 40 hit singles the following year on Factory Records. A friend of mine attended the gig and has helped fill in the picture; he told me that “Hooky's bass was too loud” and “there weren't many there”!

I am hoping that my article will jog some memories of Style readers who were also present at the gig. Perhaps somewhere in the Rochdale borough there are rock bands with both young men and women, with all involved making an important contribution.

A few major rock musicians have employed female musicians over the years: David Bowie, Jeff Beck and Prince spring to mind.

But these all came after Gillian Gilbert's participation in New Order.

Gillian's understated style can be seen on umpteen YouTube videos, not least when New Order (notoriously) performed Blue Monday live on Top Of The Pops forty years ago.

In a decade of attention-seeking divas, it was wonderful to see a female musician in command of her instrument and being a positive role model to the audiences.

B e a u t y : fresh, flawless skin With 2023 trends focusing on "no-makeup" makeup and fresh skin what can you do to make your skin look as flawless as possible?

The skin is one of the largest organs in the body in surface area and weight and reflects what’s going on inside the body. If we're tired, stressed or dehydrated, one of the telltale signs is our skin looking dull and feeling dry.

If we understand the skin structure and biology, we can understand why looking after the inside, through eating a healthy varied diet, drinking lots of H2O and taking skin specific supplements shows on the outside.

Human skin consists of two main layers: the epidermis and the dermis. Beneath the dermis lies the hypodermis and subcutaneous fatty tissue.

The epidermis is the quite thin, relatively tough and makes up the outer layer of the skin. The epidermis is the skin you can see and feel. The dermis is a thick layer of fibrous and elastic tissue (made mostly of collagen, with a small but important component of elastin) which gives the skin its flexibility and strength. The dermis contains nerve endings, sweat glands and oil (sebaceous) glands, hair follicles and blood vessels.

Every hour, we generate millions of skin cells to replace the millions we lose daily through a process of skin shedding called desquamation. In order to keep the new skin cells healthy, we need to feed the body with the correct nutrients in order for our body to have the correct ingredients to produce collagen and elastin. These key nutrients are iron, vitamin C and zinc and without these, the body cannot make collagen or elastin proteins and we notice skin prematurely ageing.

Good sources of iron include liver, red meat, beans, nuts, dried fruit and leafy greens. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, peppers, strawberries, broccoli and sprouts, while good sources of Zinc include meat, shellfish, nuts, dairy foods and whole grains.

As well as eating a varied, healthy diet, skin specific supplements can enhance the skin and increase the efficacy of your current skincare. Daisy and Fred have been supported by us for a little over 3 years now. We have been visiting twice each day and also supporting with a social visit to assist with shopping needs every week. Fred needed some support with Daisy’s personal care and to give him a little respite as he was doing much of the domestic chores around the home.

Daisy took ill and our visits increased to support both a little more. Sadly Daisy left us and Fred was on his own when his partner of 48 years had gone.

Fred approached us to see if we could continue supporting him as we had built that bond and his own health was declining.

We continued with those same visits and the social calls to get Fred out and helped to maintain his independence with his shopping.

After approximately 6 months, Fred asked if there were additional visits that could be had as he really enjoyed the company of his regular team.

Live in Care was suggested to Fred and the amazing Liam came to the rescue. Liam has a number of similar interests as Fred and they are both now regular attendees at the Crown Oil Arena in Rochdale cheering on the team that Fred has followed since he was a child and was first taken to Spotland by his dad.

by Style's Fashion Editor Mollie Butterworth Welcome to 2023, yes I am slightly late to the party but this will be my first article of the year for Rochdale Style Magazine.

If you are new here, I am Mollie, owner and founder of Pretty Parade, women’s clothing and accessories boutiques located in the villages of Littleborough and Ramsbottom, plus you can find us online too. I live and breathe Pretty Parade, it's been my baby for the last six years.

My day to day consists of hand selecting lovely new collections for the boutique’s and helping our amazing customers in any way I can from styling, to building capsule wardrobes to just being a friendly face to chat with. This means I get to see and analyse all the trends for the season ahead early and then I can pass on my tips and tricks to you lovely readers.

Spring / Summer 23 is in full bloom, as we welcome the longer days and the warmer weather is just around the corner, which means many of us are starting to book our summer holidays and thinking about a wardrobe refresh ready for the new season. It’s always at this time of year, where we are all becoming fed up with the chunky knits and darker colours and are ready to lift our wardrobes with pops of colour and pretty prints. However the switch from warm and cosy to lightweight and floaty is not always an easy one but I am here to guide you through this fun and inspiring season ahead.

Green is BACK - Once again, I know lots of you will be happy to hear this! Nearly every shade of green is making the most amazing comeback, the richer tones are really strong and will be here to stay for a while! Which is perfect for those who made a big investment into this colour last year, as it simply means you can add a few new key pieces to your collection for a refresh!

Although I am beyond excited, as we are seeing two other major colour ways making a statement this season, which is so refreshing after a heavy season last Spring/Summer of simply green!

The two other key colours to keep your eyes peeled for our Blue and Pink. One of the strongest colour stories to come into fashion this season is Blue, and there is a shade of blue out there for everyone.

Thanks to our love of denim, blue can very much work as a neutral and will also work well teamed with almost any other colour also, making blue this season's easiest trend to follow! A cobalt blue has been a particular favourite for spring, this colour can seem bright at first, but it is actually subtle enough to be styled into daily wear, as it can be teamed with darker tones and monochrome look. Also lots of association with orange and pink which is perfect for the season ahead. It is the type of blue that will excite you!

SUPPORT SPRINGHILL HOSPICE IN 2023 TAKE ON THE YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS FOR SPRINGHILL HOSPICE Springhill supporters are masters of tackling fantastic challenges to help raise vital funds for the Hospice. In 2022, over 50 intrepid walkers laced up their boots and took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks for Springhill Hospice.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks entails a challenging full day circular route of hill walking in the Yorkshire Dales; approximately 24 miles in length with an elevation gain of over 1000m. Starting and finishing in Hortonin Ribblesdale, supporters will climb the summits of Pen-y-Ghent (694m), Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough (723m). The challenge is to complete the walk within the 12 hours, and qualified and experienced guides will be with you every step of the way.

Springhill hopes to beat last year’s number of walkers, and set a new record for highest number of supporters taking on the Yorkshire Dales for the Hospice. The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge will take place on Saturday 29th July, please visit springhill.org.uk/yorkshire-threepeaks to register!

And this could not be more true for lifelong Dale fan and former Rochdale AFC Chairman, Chris Dunphy.

More In HOPE Than Glory is a detailed reflection of Chris Dunphy's journey, from his four mile walk to Spotland as a young lad, to his amazing climb to director and then to successful chairman of his beloved club, Rochdale AFC. Football is a game that is loved throughout the world at every level. It's a game that is all encompassing whether it be the enjoyment of a kick about in the local park or the magnificent spectacle of a World Cup final. This football story lies somewhere between those two extremes.

It's the story of how what was once regarded as one of the most unsuccessful league football teams suddenly and dramatically became a little less unsuccessful.

The book gives a fascinating insight into the complicated workings of a small town club and is a vivid recollection of times gone by for the reader, when the Dale often found themselves seeking re-election to the football league.

Chris describes the many highs and even more lows of competing with the big boys in football, during his 30 years involvement with the club, including his tenure as Chairman. He highlights the difficult decisions a chairman has to make, from signing and selling players to sacking managers.

It recounts the hopes and aspirations of every football supporter, followed by the inevitable kick in the stomach feeling when it all falls down. It's about love and passion for football in our proud northern town.

This positive and nostalgic, light-hearted story is a constant delight, taking the reader on so many different recollections, not just about his footballing journey.

Chris retired as Chairman of Rochdale in 2018 and still lives with his wife Kim in Rochdale.

As we go to press, Rochdale Football Club are having a difficult season in League Two and Chris, like many of us in the town, hope they can survive relegation and remain in the football league...

YOUNG ROCHDALE PHOTOGRAPHER SHORTLISTED FOR NATIONAL AWARD A stunning photograph from a Rochdale-based young photographer is one of fourteen images to be shortlisted for a national RSPCA photography award.

A puppy in the snow, an inquisitive sheep and a sunset murmuration are just some of the incredible snaps up for deliberation in the ‘People’s Choice’ category of the prestigious RSPCA Young Photographer Awards.

CARTWHEEL ARTS RECEIVE FUNDING BOOST Cartwheel Arts are thrilled to announce that they are a recipient of the 2023 Greater Manchester Culture Fund.

The Culture Fund supports organisations that are committed to providing high quality cultural experiences and opportunities, supporting the sector through challenging economic times and to widen and diversify access to arts culture for all residents.

Cartwheel Arts delivers ‘Art for a Reason’. This means they engage local communities with arts projects that support their health and wellbeing, foster positive connections within neighbourhoods, engage children and young people, and support life-long learning and skills - all with the view to generating social change.

Fourteen animal snaps taken by talented youngsters aged from 10 to 18 were shortlisted for the RSPCA’s photography competition.

Clara Drycz, aged 15 from Rochdale, submitted her stunning pet portrait ‘Hopeful for a white Christmas’ to the competition.

In December last year, the overall winners of the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2022 were announced after being judged by a panel of photographic experts including RSPCA vice president Chris Packham and industry professionals.

RSPCA photographer and awards judge, Andrew Forsyth, said: “The best thing about the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards is that we're always seeing something new. The young photographers are always bringing fresh ideas and trying different things. The creativity and talent is outstanding - and it's a real joy to look through the entries every year.

“The People’s Choice award is a fantastic part of the competition because the public had the chance to get involved and pick their favourite photo. There are some truly beautiful photos on the shortlist... I can’t wait to see which one has been picked as the winning photo!”

The winner of the RSPCA People’s Choice competition will receive £100 worth of vouchers from Amazon.co.uk, an RSPCA Young Photographer Awards trophy and a certificate.

Voting has now closed and at time of press, the winner is set to be announced on the RSPCA’s Facebook page so keep an eye out!

Entries for the main RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2023 will open on Thursday 4th May 2023.

The funding will be primarily used to resource Cartwheel's Art for Wellbeing programme, providing tailored creative activities to children, young people and adults at all stages of life, from earlyyears creative sessions with refugee and asylum-seeking families, to enhancing creativity within schools and the local youth provision, to engaging adults who experience mental ill-health, poverty and racial inequalities.

This funding represents not only a commitment to supporting arts in the region but also an endorsement of the artists and partners we work with and an investment in the wonderful, creative, hardworking communities we work with.

In further good news, Alyson Malach, the Chair of Cartwheel Arts, has been shortlisted in the BAME Project's Wonder Awards in the 'Women in Leadership' category.

The awards celebrate women who have been nominated by the community for going above and beyond.

TRAINING TO DELIVER A KNOCK-OUT RESULT FOR JOLLY JOSH Local lad, Callum Ashton is continuing his family’s fundraising efforts by championing local disabled children’s charity Jolly Josh, by taking to the boxing ring this spring.

“Last year my dad raised funds for Jolly Josh through a charity golf tournament and family fun day at The Moorcock Inn that raised £1,100.00 for Jolly Josh. After his visit to the Centre, he told me about all the amazing work they do for disabled children, which made me think about how my own family, along with my boxing family, have made a difference in my life. This gave me the idea of helping to do the same for other families in the Borough by using my boxing skills and talents to help someone else’s family to thrive.

As a teenager the now 23-yearold Littleborough local Callum, showed great promise in the boxing ring. Having chosen a different path in life for a few years, last year he picked up his gloves once more, and is fighting fit and ready to deliver a knockout result for Castleton based Centre for children with complex needs.

“My fight will be all the more poignant for our community as my fight will be in memory of Blake, the son of friends of mine, Josh Hird and Stacey Netherwoods. Sadly, Blake passed away in September last year, as a result of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Josh and Stacey both agree that helping other children in Blake’s memory would be a fitting tribute to their son, so choosing to support Jolly Josh was a unanimous decision,” Callum explained.

“Boxing is a way of life and something you can always go back to.

I get so much from being involved with the sport, from the daily training sessions and sparring to the whole experience of being part of our boxing family,” said Callum.

“I train at Micky’s Gym in Milnrow, along with my dad, Colin.

Everyone there is really supportive, whether you are training to fight in the ring, or simply to keep fit. After a few years break, last year I decided to put my gloves back on, and I’ve been really successful, winning five out of my last six fights”, added Callum.

Taking to the ring again on the 24th of March, at a ‘white collar’ (or unlicenced) ‘Sting Like A Beest’ tournament at Ashton Masonic Hall, Callum’s aim is to go the distance and pull no punches in an effort to steal a win for himself and for Jolly Josh.

Going into the ring at 71kg, Light Middleweight Callum is asking family and friends to sponsor his efforts in aid of Jolly Josh, and is also giving a percentage of his own ticket sales towards his fundraising total.

Of Callum’s fundraising and boxing endeavours Jolly Josh Community Fundraiser, Lillie Winterbottom, said: "It was lovely to meet Callum for the first time, and to chat with his dad Colin, who does all he can to help us here at the Centre.

"There is no doubt that Callum will put everything he has into his training, on fight night and towards his ultimate goal of one day turning Professional. We are super proud of Callum and wish him all the best as he fights his corner for Jolly Josh and in memory of Blake."

JOLLY JOSH - NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO CONNECT, SUPPORT & THRIVE Castleton based children’s Centre, Jolly Josh has introduced two new sessions to help families in the area living with complex medical needs and physical disabilities to get together, support each other and thrive.

Wednesday mornings are fast becoming ‘Wonderful Wednesday’ for Early Year families as they join in Baby Splash Together sessions in the Hydrotherapy Pool. Specifically for children living with complex medical needs and/or physical disabilities aged 0-5 years, along with their carers, and hosted by Hydro Lead Natalie Baker, everyone enjoys the warmth and freedom of the water, rhymes, singing, splashing and of course, lots of smiles!

And after the pool session, once everyone is dried and dressed, tots and their family can move into the Multi-Function Room to enjoy Sing and Sign with Session Facilitator, Anna Schofield.

The second new initiative for 2023 is a great opportunity to meet other people who are caring for someone with complex medical needs and/or physical disabilities, over a light lunch. Coffee & Catch-up is a monthly drop-in session, and a great place to make new connections and share experiences.

“These monthly informal lunchtime sessions have already proved popular, and some amazing new connections made” said Sarah Ford, Jolly Josh Centre Manager, adding “It’s great to hear everyone chatting, laughing, sharing experiences and making new friends.”

Coffee & Catch-up at The Jolly Josh Centre, is on the first Friday of every month (except April which is on Friday 31st of March) between 12 and 2pm, finishing just in time for the school run. The session is free of charge, including lunch, and the young person you care for is welcome to join in too.

MARGARET RAISES 1K FOR DEMENTIA UK

Rochdale Musical Theatre Company hosted a Christmas Charity Night in memory of their friend and fellow thespian Chris Robinson, raising over £400 for Rochdale & District Mind.

Seventy-eight year old Margaret Riley, from Rochdale, successfully completed her fundraising challenge to walk a mile a day in February to raise money for dementia UK.

The event was held at Mill About in Spotland Bridge Mill and hosted by M.T Entertainment, with live music from Pub Lunch, and bandeoke with Dan Fielden and the Mash-up Men. The company will continue to raise funds for Rochdale & District Mind at their production of Grease at Champness Hall in May. Rochdale actress Sue Devaney has kindly donated memorabilia signed by the Coronation Street cast which will be auctioned and the proceeds added to the fundraising total. ⁣
