welcome... Dear Readers,

Welcome to our summer edition! This issue is packed with positive news about our wonderful town. Firstly, a huge congratulations to our very own Mental Health Editor, Brad Gartland, who recently received a Platinum Champion Award for his tireless voluntary efforts for Andy's Man Club, The Stephen Gartland Foundation and promoting mental health awareness across the borough and beyond. We chat to Brad about the prestigious award and his future plans. He has also penned a fantastic article on mental health and positive self-talk. We're excited to have an exclusive interview with Aziz Ibrahim who will be appearing at Rochdale Feel Good Festival on 13th August. The multitalented guitarist and singer/songwriter has performed with artists such as the Stone Roses, Simply Red and Asia as well as co-writing and playing live with Ian Brown, Paul Weller, Rebel MC and Hot Chocolate.

Letters of love & hope for Ukraine by local schoolchildren

The spotlight is definitely on The Arts in this edition - there's so much happening across the borough. It's brilliant to see our talented local creatives bouncing back after the last two years. Steve Cooke has put together a comprehensive 3-page guide to what's on in The Arts, with the focus on Rochdale Town Centre's regeneration. Lucy Fieldhouse meets local artist Dave Draws, while Richard Lysons explores Littleborough's creative hub, Ebor Studio and meets its artists and designers. Rochdale mum, Catherine Aspinall, shares some fantastic ideas for family days out this summer including the best picnic and paddling spots! There's also a Good Food & Drink section, a guide to Rochdale Town Centre's summer food and drink scene and sunshine-ready recipes from top culinary duo Tom McNeeney and Richard Rodriguez. Rochdale Musical Theatre Company staged The Producers at Champness Hall in May

Thank you to Rochdale & District Camera Club for the stunning images of the borough on our centre pages... how lucky are we to have such beautiful countryside on our doorstep, while also enjoying a town centre that is looking better than ever. To share pictures and stories just message us on Facebook or Instagram or email features@rochdalestyle.com. Follow us on social media @rochdalestyle to read lots more happy news. I hope you enjoy this edition & have a great summer...

AZIZ IBRAHIM

4 | Rochdale Style

Multi-talented guitarist and singer/songwriter Aziz Ibrahim has performed with artists including the Stone Roses, Simply Red and Asia as well as co-writing and playing live with Ian Brown, Paul Weller, Rebel MC and Hot Chocolate. With a stellar career spanning over 3 decades he’s founded the Asian Blues Collective and toured with Pakistan based rock group ‘Overload.’ Aziz’s solo work includes his acclaimed debut album telling the story of his family’s journey from ‘Lahore To Longsight‘, EP ‘Middle Road‘ and album ‘Rusholme Rock with Tabla maestro Dalbir Singh Rattan’ all showcasing his unique blend of Desi GuitR and Asian Blues. Style Magazine caught up with Aziz ahead of his main stage appearance at this year’s Rochdale Feel Good Festival.

Style: What age were you when you picked up your first guitar and what first inspired you? Aziz: I was 8 years old when I got my first guitar. It was £5 from a shop on the estate called 'Joy Town'. We used to get free milk at school and during it our class teacher used to pull out an acoustic guitar and play a few tunes. I was mesmerised by this instrument and its silver strings. Annoyed my folks all the time until I got one for my birthday! How many guitars do you own? I have 50 guitars. Some I've bought myself and some given to me through sponsorships. They vary from electrics to acoustics to basses and some very eclectic instruments like santoor, banjo and mandolin. What are you up to at the moment? I'm a solo artist at the moment. After lockdown I can't afford to pay a band but I'll get back to that next year hopefully. I have my solo show and a show with Inder Goldfinger (Ian Brown) where we go out and play all the co-writes I've done for Ian Brown Solo and celebrate the release of Unfinished Monkey Business and the south asian contribution to that album. I'm also working in the cultural sector with Heritage Learning Lancashire as Musician in Residence across Lancashire heritage

sites. I'm part of the South Asia Gallery Collective as a co-curator for Manchester Museum for the South Asia Gallery launch. My debut album is in the museum! I'm writing and collaborating with other artists including Paul Weller and I'm generally a content creator every day. My latest project is a live guitar-DJ set. After I received my honorary doctorate from Salford Uni I now lecture at Universities and music colleges on music/ performance/studio/tech/business. Did you find lockdown helped or hindered your creativity? It helped in some ways as I could concentrate on my writing but it was a massive hindrance. It destroyed my livelihood and many social aspects of my life. It put pressure on my relationship and my mental health and wellbeing really suffered. Musically speaking it helped me study a new direction which was content creation. All day and every day I was watching people, learning how they create content, podcasts, game or network. A lot of people say they got a lot of writing done but I didn't. I was so depressed with the loss of income that I just didn't feel like writing. Still the digital learning I put in over those few years is paying off now!

You replaced John Squire in The Stone Roses - a role Noel Gallagher once described as “the hardest job in the world”. How did that come about and would you agree with Noel?! It came about in 95/96 through the drummer Robbie Maddix who introduced me to Ian and Mani as we worked together in the past in Rebel MC and Hot Chocolate. I got on with Ian and Mani and as I'm from Longsight Manchester it kinda tied in with the 'Second Coming' lyrics. Besides, Mani said even when Slash was on the cards that they weren't gonna hire a man who wore leather pants so I guess I was a good fit! As far as Noel's comment, I guess it is virtually impossible to be accepted in the place of somebody who is so loved locally and internationally but as far as the music goes it took me about a week or so to learn the whole set and get the sound. it would have been faster today if I'd had the internet and all the online resources! What’s been the highlight of your career so far? It's all one big highlight. Even playing the local pub! I guess the biggest shows have been breathtaking like Reading 96 with the Roses or Sau Paulo Football Stadium & Rio Olympic Stadium with Simply Red or Pyramid stage Glastonbury with Ian Brown. All mind blowing. (continued...) Rochdale Style | 5

(...continued)

I think the best has been on my own shows promoted by the British Council playing amazing places like Libya, Syria, Jerusalem, Tunisia, Morocco, Pakistan, all over India including Darjeeling up the Himalayas. I suppose in a writing context I still can't believe I've co-written songs for Ian Brown, Paul Weller, MC Akala and Asia to name a few and put a band together with the rhythm section of the Smiths and recorded my debut album 'Lahore To Longsight' with them. How would you describe your own style of music? I call my guitar style Desi GuitR #DesiGuitR as Desi is a punjabi word that means traditional i.e. home cooking or similar. My playing reflects a very punjabi, mancunian working class mix of guitar playing or so I like to think but the aesthetic behind it I call the 'Asian Blues'. Similar to the emotional influence of the Blues I think there is a colonial south asian parallel that influences our thoughts and processes especially today. What advice would you give to young musicians who dream of following in your footsteps? If you want to learn then go to YouTube and type it in. Also get with the digital future stop trying to apply an old business model to the digital world. You've got the advantage that you're born to it so use it. Don't let old school practises hold you back. Learning has been so accelerated by YouTube and Google. It's amazing to see but obviously experience still counts. All I can really say is that if an ugly, two left feet, working class, south asian Manc can achieve what I did then imagine what you can do! What do you think it is about Manchester that has produced so many talented musicians? Wow, that's a book in itself but it depends if you wanna go back to Lonnie Donnagen coffee shop days or just talk about recent decades. Manchester has its own identity and cultural mix that has created some great music but let's not forget that without the diversity from immigration and the music that came with it, there would be no Manchester Music.

6 | Rochdale Style

You’ve worked with so many charities, schools and arts projects, especially in relation to mental health. Why do you think music is key to mental health? I connect through music, music is my country and people who love music are from the same country. There's no passports required to connect here. We all know how music fits in our everyday lives. Although politicians may put our mental health and wellbeing on the back burner we all know that when you need to survive when you have nothing, listening or dancing to music will do that for you. Even at our lowest points. That's all I know. Tell us one thing people don’t know about you… Er....Longsight Library taught me to be a rock star.

We’re really looking forward to seeing you at the Rochdale Feel Good Festival. What can festivalgoers expect? Well I would like to say expect me to not ruin your day but I can guarantee that I'll make the same effort that I do for any big budget show with all the bells and whistles. I will be solo but it will be a unique Manc, South Asian working class, DesiGuitR, Asian Blues show. Oh and lots of guitar! Aziz will play Rochdale Feel Good Festival on Saturday 13 August. BRAD GARTLAND ROCHDALE'S PLATINUM CHAMPION

Style's Mental Health Editor, Brad Gartland, who founded his own Rochdale branch of the Andy’s Man Club mental health group, has been selected as a Platinum Champions volunteer as part of an official Jubilee project. In 2016, Brad lost his dad to suicide and in 2020 set up the first Andy's Man Club in Rochdale, devoting his time to the male mental health talking group. He also founded the Stephen Gartland Foundation in memory of his dad. Brad impressed the judges with his resilience in the face of such personal tragedy and he was selected as a Platinum Champion from more than 300 people who were nominated in the North West area for their dedication to volunteering. Nationally, he joins a line-up of 490 volunteers. The Platinum Champions Awards were initiated by national charity, Royal Voluntary Service and its President, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, in honour of Her Majesty The Queen. 10 | Rochdale Style

Style: How did you find out you’d been named in the Platinum Champion Awards? Brad: I received an email from the Royal Voluntary service mid-May to say I’ve been chosen as a Platinum Champion and I had to keep the news quiet until the news was publicly released on 30th May! I’m normally quite bad at keeping secrets too! What does the award mean to you? I don’t do what I do to receive awards but to receive this award shows that the work I’m doing is having a positive impact on people and that’s humbling to know. I hope this award shows people that no matter how difficult life can get, no matter what events happen in your life, it’s not the end; keep going and your story will inspire others. You volunteer tirelessly for Andy’s Man Club and the Stephen Gartland Foundation alongside promoting mental health awareness in the press and on social media - what keeps you motivated? My why is always my dad and will always be my dad. I do this for him and everyone else that feels low, hopeless, and feels like they can’t go on. As soon as I see someone benefiting from one of the Andy’s Man Club groups, donations from the foundation, or benefits from reading one of my articles, it motivates me to do more. I just want to make positive change and leave the world better than I found it. What would you love to do next? I want to keep pushing the importance of mental health both locally, nationally, and across the globe. I love writing. Maybe I’ll write a book, but that is a long way off. The second Andy’s Man Club recently opened in Rochdale due to such popular demand. What’s the best thing about Andy’s Man Club and why do you think it’s succeeding in helping so many men? I love the fact that men of all ages, backgrounds, life experiences, can come together in one room and talk. No one is pressured to speak, everything said is confidential, and there is 100% no judgement. Some men may turn up with the intention of not speaking, which is completely normal, but by the end of the session these men would have had the chance to listen and connect to others in a similar

situation, helping them realise that they’re not alone. I think the biscuits and a brew helps a lot too!!

If someone reading this is experiencing mental health issues or knows someone who is, what advice would you give them?

The Andy’s Man Club team invite anyone over 18 to join one of our Andy’s Man Club sessions along with blokes in similar situations, every Monday at 7pm (except bank holidays).

Things get better, I can promise you. If there is something on your mind, don’t bottle it up. Please talk about it! Tell a friend, colleague, family member, reach out to a charity. People care about you and want to help. I have written an article on why self-worth is so important, so please refer to this article for more advice.

The two locations in Rochdale are: • Mayfield Sports Centre, OL11 3BY. • Spotland Stadium, off Willbutts Lane, OL11 3DS (‘our spot community hub’ near the 5-a-side pitch. You’ve previously said you aim to banish the taboo surrounding male mental health problems… do you think mental health awareness, particularly for men, is improving?

Ruth Parkinson Photography: Jackie Meredith

I think mental health awareness for men is improving. I see more awareness in the media and I have countless conversations with men that five years ago probably wouldn’t even dream about admitting that they’re struggling. Many men probably haven’t yet talked about their problems, but I hope that the environment we are creating will eventually help these men feel comfortable to come forward and speak. People are now realising that it’s completely normal to struggle – and knowing that it’s normal struggle is very important to break the stigma.

Fiona helps local people to make their Wills & Wishes Legal Rochdale-born entrepreneur, Fiona Daly, is on a mission to protect local people and their loved ones by making their Wills & Wishes Legal. After launching her client-focused company in February 2021, Fiona is keen to highlight the importance of Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney and simplify the process of getting them in place. Style spoke to Fiona to find out more... Tell us a bit about Wills & Wishes Legal... We provide professional Will writing and estate planning services, Lasting Powers of Attorney, trusts, probate assistance and document storage. The aim is to raise awareness of why Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney are so important and be the go-to company that provides an affordable, easy, friendly at home service, for the local community. Where are you based? I’m based in Rochdale - where I've lived all of my life - and cover all of Rochdale and the surrounding areas. I can also set up a Zoom video call for people who live further afield. What’s the best thing about your job? I love my job because I like to educate people about how they can protect themselves and their loved ones with having their Will and Lasting Powers of Attorney in place. I know from my experience that people just don’t understand how vital these legal documents are to them and their loved ones and put off making them until it’s too late. I want to change this. As the saying goes ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’. I really enjoy meeting people and getting to know them to identify their requirements and how I can help them achieve this. Best of all, I get great satisfaction when my phone pings with another 5 star google review with lovely feedback from my client about my services; providing the best service I can is really important to me. Why is it so important that people make a Will? To provide protection for you and your loved ones. You are protected as you decide who inherits from you rather than the legal system. Your loved ones are protected because they can be provided for and it makes it easier, less stressful and less costly for them to sort your affairs out when you’ve gone. It saddens me when, week after week, common issues come up when I speak to callers, such as people not knowing where to start or thinking it’s too much hassle. Some people don’t understand the terminology in their Will, can’t remember who wrote their Will and where it is being kept (I help them find it!). People can also put off making a Will as they don’t want to make difficult decisions such as who should look after their children if they are no longer here.

Who should make a Will? Everybody who is 18 or older should make a Will. They’re not just for the elderly or rich. It’s really important to make one whatever your situation. A Will should also be reviewed every 3-5 years to check whether any changes need to be made so they always reflect your wishes rather than being out of date. I read a lot of out of date Wills. A Will written when the client’s children were young and now they are married with teenage children of their own. Wills that have clauses in them that are not relevant to their current situation. Wills with a solicitor named as an Executor and the solicitor has retired. People named in them that have passed away. What are the most common misconceptions about Wills? A lot of people that call me ask for a ‘basic’ Will, however, when I chat to them about their family set up, they tell me that they’ve remarried and have children from a previous relationship. They want to ensure they provide for their spouse but also they want to ensure their children inherit from them too. This cannot be achieved by a basic Will. A trust needs to be put into the Will to protect the spouse and the children. Other examples of where a basic Will is not appropriate would be where one of the beneficiaries is a vulnerable person and a trust needs to put in the Will to protect them and their benefits or where a beneficiary is bankrupt or going through a divorce so their inheritance needs keeping out of the divorce settlement or bankruptcy proceedings or where a parent is concerned that their child is bad with money or into alcohol or drugs so a trust is needed in the Will to stop any inheritance being frittered away. What feedback have you had so far? My clients love the unique service I offer. I visit them in their home, on a day and at a time to suit them and we have a chat over a brew. They don’t have to travel to a town or city centre office to see me, worry about finding parking or have the formalities of a solicitor’s office and the restrictive 9-5 Monday to Friday hours. I explain things in a clear jargon free way, have time to listen and prepare documents that are easy to understand. My clients also like the reassurance that I have legal qualifications, worked for 20 years as a solicitor before I started my business and I’m a member of the Society of Will Writers.

Ealees

PRETTY PLACES TO PADDLE With the weather set to hot up, here are a few places nearby where you can cool off with a little paddle… EALEES • Pay and display parking at OL15 0AQ (Littleborough) Instead of walking up to Hollingworth Lake from the car park (which is what everyone tends to do), why not walk in the other direction and head into Ealees? Next to a small wood, with loads of wildlife to spot, you will find a pond and a few picnic benches. If you then follow the path you will come across a small stream with plenty of places to paddle and throw stones.

Iron Waters

Cheesden Valley

IRON WATERS • Park at the top of Dewhirst Road (OL12 0AG) in Syke (being mindful of residents), or park on Rydings Road (OL12 9PS) and follow the marked footpath across the fields This is a teeny, tiny stream, but that makes it great (and safe) for the teeny, tiny people we want to entertain! There are also trees to climb, hills to scramble up and roll down and sometimes horses to see… CHEESDEN VALLEY • Park on the lay-by close to Owd Betts pub (OL12 7TY) If you head away from Owd Betts towards Edenfield, you will see a small opening (and a stile) in the wall on your left. If you follow the path down you will stumble across the ruins of a mill, a waterfall and a little brook running through the valley… such a hidden delight!

Harehill Park

PICNIC IN THE PARK Picnic season is finally upon us, and Rochdale has some lovely parks where you can relax, explore and play… HAREHILL PARK • Littleborough, OL15 9BG • There are places to park on Inglis Street, Sale Street and Denehurst Road • Cuppaccino Bistro serves good breakfasts and lunches and also sells ice cream and cakes Harehill Park is one of our favourites! It is really pretty, and has lots of little paths to explore, as well as a good flat space path for balls or frisbees, biking or scooting. There are two different playgrounds, one aimed at the younger children, with a cute fake road, and one for the older children, including a small skate park. There will be brass bands playing in the bandstand on Sunday 3rd July, Sunday 7th August and Sunday 4th September between 3-5pm. QUEENS PARK • Heywood, OL10 4AL • There is parking opposite the park entrance on Queens Park Road • There is a café in the park

Queens Park

A large, beautiful park with so much to explore. Queens Park has a new(ish) castle themed playground and is also home to a great BMX track. There is also a lake full of hungry ducks, and often a land train to ride! DENEHURST PARK • Rochdale, OL11 5AF • There's a small car park next to the Premier shop, Edenfield Rd Denehurst Park is lovely! It has a little playground, including a separate toddler area, and also a perimeter path if you want to ride your bike (but beware of the trolls hiding under the bridge!). The Denehurst Park Dog Show is happening again this year, on Sunday 21st August. FALINGE PARK • Rochdale, OL12 6JY • Parking inside the park or on the surrounding streets being mindful of residents Falinge Park has quite an adventurous playground, with an aerial assault course and rocks to climb, but you will find some things for the younger crowd too. There’s also a duck pond, tree carvings and beautiful gardens. There is due to be a vintage car show in Falinge Park on Sunday 17th July.

ELLENROAD ENGINE HOUSE • Milnrow • Car park next to the museum at OL16 4LG • £7.50 per adult, but accompanying children go free! Have you ever wondered what that massive chimney is as you get on or off the motorway at Milnrow? Well my kids have always asked… and I did actually know it was home to “the world’s largest working steam mill engine” (I am a geek after all), but I had never actually seen it (or had any real desire to do so). However, once again pestered to the point of surrender, off we went to an Open Day. These are the dates when the engine is in steam (when you will see the chimney puffing) and when the little museum and small café are open.

Often there are additional visiting attractions, such as cars or live music. There were also lots of Land Rovers to admire when we were there. I cannot get over how much my little boy enjoyed his visit… he was absolutely fascinated in the foundry, and stood still for a good 25 minutes watching horse shoes being made! He loved seeing the coal be shovelled into the boiler and was mesmerised watching the flames through the little protective screens they give you. He also enjoyed inspecting lots of different tools and having a go at turning some of the equipment… and all this was before we had actually entered the engine house. True to its title, the engine itself is HUGE and - be warned - when it first starts it makes a lot of noise and a large cloud of steam… cue a lot of excited screaming!! We will definitely be visiting again, with the Open Days occurring on the first Sunday of every month (except January), between 11 and 4.

TANDLE HILL COUNTRY PARK • Free • Royton, Oldham, OL2 5UX There's always somewhere new to explore at Tandle Hill Country Park. There's the trek to the top of the world, countless trees to climb, sticks a-plenty, a little stream and - the piece de resistance - a massive slide down the hillside! I just love the magnificent views of Rochdale, Manchester and Oldham and the woods really are impressive (in all seasons). There's some nice smooth paths for prams and bikes but also some rough terrain. The play areas aren’t particularly big but they are fun, with wobbly bridges, sand pits with diggers, swings and slides. An ice cream from the cafe is always a winner!

SELF WORTH - WHY IT'S SO VITALLY IMPORTANT International Men's Health Week always begins on the Monday before Father's Day

(Monday 13th June 2022) and ends on Father's Day itself (Sunday 19th June 2022) to promote information and support for all boys and men to live healthier, longer, and more fulfilling lives. At the time you’re reading this article, Men’s Health Week will

have passed so you may be questioning why I mentioned it in the first place. Well…

I believe men’s health week is every week so here I am banging the drum about why

it’s so important that we understand the concept of self-worth and how it impacts our mental wellbeing.

What is self-worth? Why is self-worth important? And what does it have to do with

me? These may be questions you’re asking yourself as you approach this article. Let me take you on a brief journey to answer these questions one step at a time.

WHAT IS SELF-WORTH?

Here’s the point.

Self-worth is the opinion you have about yourself and the value you place on yourself. An example of self-worth is your belief that you are a good person who deserves good things or your belief that you are a bad person who deserves bad things.

Many people tie their self-worth to external factors in their life, such as: • Our job • Our income • Our relationship status (and the biggest lie we’re told is “be with someone that makes you happy.” The truth is happiness is something you create on your own. Be with someone who adds to it). • The size of our house • Exam results

You may be thinking “Great, you’ve just regurgitated a definition, but I still don’t understand why self-worth is important to me?” 22 | Rochdale Style

If we tie our self-worth to external factors, our self-worth (the value we place on ourselves) will constantly fluctuate. This is because external events are always changing and some of these external events are temporary (such as a job, relationship etc.). Basing self-worth on external events is not good for our mental wellbeing! It can result in a rollercoaster ride, and to be honest… I hate rollercoasters!! The next bit is where I want you to really focus… hold tight!

Picture yourself walking into a job interview that you’ve worked incredibly hard to get. You’ve been preparing for weeks and everything about the job sounds perfect. Two days after the job interview you receive a phone call to say that you didn’t get the job. Of course, you really wanted that job and to be honest, you’re gutted. That’s completely normal and everyone would feel the same - I’d be gutted too! It’s the job of your dreams after all. Now… here’s why self-worth is so important to us. I have presented two scenarios highlighting someone who ties their self-worth to the outcome of the job interview, and a scenario highlighting someone who doesn’t tie their self-worth to the outcome of the interview. Scenario 1: If we tie our self-worth to this external event (the result of the job interview), this will leave us feeling worthless as we didn’t get the job. Our confidence can drop, and we may be discouraged from applying for more interviews. A vicious cycle, right? Now let’s look at how we’d respond if we didn’t tie our self-worth to the result of the job interview. Scenario 2: We just heard we didn’t get the job. We’re still gutted as we worked so hard for it and that’s completely normal. However, in this scenario, we know that the outcome of this interview doesn’t affect who we are as a person. We know our worth as a human is not dependent on our ability to land that job. We know that we are still the same great person as before and we know we will have another interview round the corner soon. We remain upbeat and get preparing for the next one. This is someone with high sense of self-worth and is confident in their abilities! The best thing about this is that the situation didn’t change. The situation didn’t change at all. You still didn’t get the job. But what changed was how you viewed yourself and your sense of selfworth. This takes a lot of practise and something that I’m still learning myself. But we can all get to this stage! I could go on and provide hundreds of different examples, but before the article comes to an end, I want to briefly introduce how to start increasing our self-worth. First, start talking positively to yourself. It may sound like a very small change… but it makes a huge difference. We all have an inner critic voice that can bring us down, nit-picking at the most

minute thing. Don’t let the inner critic take over as we will start to believe the voice and it can start to affect our worth. Challenge the inner critic and use positive affirmations like “I am good enough” or “I’m a valuable human being”. Never underestimate the power of positive self-talk! Then, once you start to develop a high sense of self-worth, make sure it stays completely unconnected from any external event! I am also completely aware that there may be people reading this article that are probably feeling broken, hopeless, and feel like their sense of self-worth is so low that they can never imagine building it up. Well, I’m here to tell you that despite all the things that you’ve been through, you are still here fighting and that says a lot about who you are – so I say you’re pretty awesome and I value you!! Your homework is now to put all this into practise. So, start talking positively to yourself (even if it’s just one positive thing a day; small things make big changes), don’t let external events pull your selfworth down, and remember that your self-worth is something that comes from within. It should be something that over time is built up, and you continue to build for the rest of your life. Understanding and learning about selfworth can teach you how to be more fulfilled and happier in your own self. Love and value yourself for who you are as a person. We are all brilliant human beings! If you feel affected by anything raised in this article, I personally invite you to join one of our Andy’s Man Club sessions along with blokes in similar situations, every Monday at 7pm. The two locations in Rochdale are: • Mayfield Sports Centre, OL11 3BY. • Spotland Stadium, off Willbutts Lane, OL11 3DS (‘our spot community hub’ near the 5-a-side pitch. “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” - Buddha Brad Gartland Mental Health Editor Royal Voluntary Service Platinum Champion Andy’s Man Club Facilitator Stephen Gartland Foundation Trustee

"I GOT TOLD MY DOODLE PATTERN STYLE LOOKED LIKE A CITY FROM ABOVE"

THE STORY BEHIND THE BAILLIE STREET QUARTER MAP If you’ve wandered around the Baillie Street Quarter recently we bet you’ve spotted this great doodle map. Created by illustrator Dave Draws, the intricate map showcases some of the great businesses that call the area their home. If you look closely you can spot well-loved Rochdale food and drink spots like Petite Bistro, Hogarths, La Mancha and Vicolo del Vino. The black and white map also features places like the Rochdale Music Service, Heaven Scent and Number Ten. Manchester based mural artist, illustrator and serial map doodler Dave Draws shared the story behind the artwork with Style. Style: So tell us a bit of a background on you and your career. Dave Draws: I studied in Leeds but not to do art more of a Media degree. I then went to Berlin for a year where I became an exhibiting artist and that was where I got told my doodle pattern style looked like a city from above. 26 | Rochdale Style

When I moved to Manchester this led to me drawing maps which proved popular and I started drawing murals all over the city and soon further afield.

After that I did a rough sketch of the map before creating the piece on paper with Posca pens. It was then scanned and digitised ready to be printed onto the wall!

At this minute I’ve created artwork for clients such as BBC Sport, ITV, M&S, Channel 4, Marriott Hotels and I have travelled as far afield as New York and Hong Kong to create artwork!

What inspires your art?

What is the story behind the Baillie Street Quarter map?

In terms of contemporary artists Keith Haring and his art is for everyone - his message is really inspiring.

I was contacted by Paul Ambrose at Rochdale Business Improvement District (BID) about creating the Baillie Street Quarter map a good while ago and he explained the vision of what they wanted to create in the area and I thought it sounded really cool. We then had a few chats about how the project might work before it got signed off. Even though it is a small area it was quite a difficult piece to draw as there weren’t up to date images or locations for some of the places on the map. So this meant a lot of back and forth with Paul working on exact layouts.

I don’t think I have one inspiration as such. My Mum has a very similar doodle style so I think I have taken inspiration from that.

You can spot more of Dave Draws’ maps over on his Instagram @dave_draws.

EBOR STUDIO - LITTLEBOROUGH'S CREATIVE HUB A quiet side street off busy Featherstall Road may appear an unlikely location for a community of artists and designers, but Ebor Studio is arguably Littleborough's creative hub. It provides work spaces for a whole variety of professional artists and designers. The four storey building in William Street was constructed as Ebor Mill in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and was probably used for cotton processing and warehousing. In the 1930s the mill was purchased by St Mary's RC Church and renamed Jubilee Hall. It was used as a dining hall for St Mary's School, as well as being a social centre for the church community. In the 1980s the building became empty. In 2006, artists Kara Lyons and Paul Haywood began to refurbish and develop it, turning the old mill into a working cultural centre for both artists and the community. Studio bays were constructed for permanent artist working spaces. BELOW: Artist & photographer: Maryanne Royle "Fabric in, Fabric of" Analogue prints on pearl paper

28 | Rochdale Style

In 2010 the building was opened to the public for art classes and eight years later the ground floor area was refurbished and Gallery FRANK opened. This gallery is named in honour of Frank Haywood, the previous owner of the building who was a great supporter of the whole Ebor project. The gallery is the location for exhibitions and workshops. Exhibitions are programmed by both in-house artists and designers as well as invited individuals and groups. Obviously, the pandemic and successive lockdowns had a big affect on Ebor, but there have been some positives come about during such a negative time. With the reduction of their external networks, the collective focused exclusively on what the artists and designers could do themselves. The result has been a more collaborative and supportive atmosphere.

ABOVE: Artist: Babs Smith "Relic Planet Sounds" An A3 Giclee Print drawn in Tilt Brush VR. Exhibited with Artivive, an AR app which allows the viewer to experience travelling through an abstract Anthropogenic landscape of remnants of planets existing only in sound. Sound by Holly Phelps (IORA).

Thanks to support funding, Ebor commissioned each artist to produce new work which gave them all an aim during such a bleak time. It also compensated a little for lost revenue. The studio ran online workshops for Littleborough Arts Festival and these will be held again this year, some online and some in the gallery.

On the Ground Floor, as well as the aforementioned gallery space, there are artists specialising in paint, sculpture and sound. One floor above, there are artists working in ceramics, digital art, photography, paint and sculpture. On the Second Floor, studios have been created in the vast attic space with its impressive vaulted ceiling. There is a bespoke clothing designer, a photographer, along with more artists working with paint, ceramics, textiles and sound.

Happily, things are back to normal and I recently visited Ebor Studio on one of their open days. I was enthralled by the variety and quality of the work on display. In the basement workshop, two furniture makers have a huge range of equipment, tools and, naturally, types of wood! I was particularly struck by some beautiful wooden bowls on display that had been made there.

The studio's basement gives access to the former rear yard of the mill. During the pandemic this area has been developed into a community garden, event space and location for outdoor activities. There is even a thriving bee hive! Surrounded by industrial buildings, this space will surely become an increasingly attractive oasis of greenery and colour in this part of Littleborough.

ABOVE: Artist & photographer: Kara Lyons "Fracture: Tongue/ Groove" Clay, graphite and sand. This durational and performative piece continues to change throughout the exhibition from the point at which the first piece of material is laid. Once completed, the work will be left to dry and crack, unpredictably, until the closing of the exhibition.

I do not have room here to list all the artists and designers at Ebor Studio or to adequately describe their work, but the studio's website will supply you with much of this information. You must also visit the studio yourself! I had a friendly welcome and everyone I spoke to was happy to discuss their work and answer my questions.

I strongly believe that the creative arts are crucial in our lives. Art can make children more happy, balanced and communicative and it can improve people's well being. In strictly financial terms, the arts earn billions of pounds for the British economy. Rochdale has a strong tradition of encouraging successful and original artists with its college, art gallery and many exhibition spaces. I am pleased to see that Ebor has support and funding from various organisations including Rochdale Borough Council and the Arts Council. Ebor Studio is a short walk from Littleborough Railway Station and frequent buses go along Featherstall Road. William Street can be accessed via either Albion Street or Butterworth Street. RECIPES

Rochdale culinary pals Tom McNeeney and Richard Rodriguez have come together to compile some recipes that compliment each other perfectly. Richard is an instagram sensation with tens of thousands of followers who love his big, bold, flavourful recipes and Tom’s built up a following of his own at his family’s incredibly successful pub The Oxford. This edition, Richard is treating us to one of his all time summer favourites with these incredible lamb meatballs and Tom has come up with a few bright and breezy little numbers to go alongside it... and even a Sangria for some sunshine sipping on the side.

Manchego Lamb Meatballs Prep Time 10 minutes - Total Time 45 minutes - Makes around 16 meatballs

Meatballs or albóndigas as they are called in Spain, are a thing of beauty done right. They should be soft and juicy not hard and dry. Mixed with pasta, in a sub roll or just with some bread, any way is good. And if you have never tried lamb meatballs now is your chance. Minced lamb mixed with manchego cheese, garlic, paprika, cloves and red wine in a tomato sauce, heavenly! Meatball Ingredients: 500g of minced lamb 50g of manchego cheese, grated 2 garlic cloves, grated 1 tsp of smoked sweet paprika 1 small pinch of ground cloves 1 small handful of fresh parsley, chopped 1 egg 1 slice of white bread, crust removed 40mls of red wine Chilli flakes (optional) Sauce Ingredients: 400g of chopped tomatoes 1 small onion, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, finely sliced 1 small pinch of brown sugar 70mls of red wine 38 | Rochdale Style

Garnish: Chopped fresh parsley Grated manchego cheese Extra-virgin olive oil

Method Into a large bowl add all the meatball ingredients, season and mix together. Form into individual balls just slightly smaller than a golf ball, you should get around 16. I find it easier to mould if you wet your hands a little. Place a large non-stick pan over a medium to high and allow that to heat up for a minute or so. Pour in a drizzle of olive oil, enough to coat the bottom of the pan. Then add the meatballs, give the pan a little shake to prevent them from sticking. Cook on each side for around 3 minutes or till nicely browned, then place to one side. At this stage you are not looking to cook them all the way through, you just want to build a nice crust. You are going to make the sauce in the same pan that you fried the meatballs in. Turn the heat down to low and add the onions and garlic with a pinch of salt.

There should be enough fat in the pan to cook the onions - if not just add a small drizzle of oil. Once the onions and garlic are nice and soft turn up the heat to high and pour in the red wine. Allow the wine to reduce, should only take a couple of minutes. Once it has, turn the heat down to low and add the tin tomatoes, brown sugar and mix. Simmer for a couple of minutes before adding the meatballs to the sauce. If you like before returning the meatballs you can use a handheld stick blender to whizz the sauce till smooth, I did! Simmer the meatballs in the sauce for 15 minutes or till cooked through. To finish the dish garnish with fresh chopped parsley, some grated manchego cheese and a nice drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil, enjoy!

Baby Gem Salad Cups In one of my countless cookbooks I’ve got, years ago there was a line that really stuck with me; once you start seeing a salad as vegetable nachos you’ll never make a boring one again. Nothing embodies that revolutionary statement like these little beauties. 1 tomato (diced) 1/2 a cucumber (diced) 2 baby gem lettuces 100g stilton 2 heaped teaspoons sour cream 1 heaped teaspoon mayonnaise 1 spring onion 2 slices of streaky bacon (diced) 1 tablespoon crispy onions

First of all put your diced bacon in a non-stick pan over a medium heat, keep it moving while you crack on with the rest.

Cheesy Garlic Bites Outrageously easy to make, these little morsels of cheesy goodness tick all the garlic bread boxes and for how easy they are you’ll be making them far far too often. You can add all sorts to the centres like pesto or pepperoni but I’m a simple soul, cheese is all I need. 2 par cooked baguettes (those vacuum packed ones) 1 heaped teaspoon garlic granules

Now break off the first four big leaves on each lettuce, wash and arrange on a big plate like little boats, roughly chop the rest of each lettuce and add to a bowl with the cucumber and tomato. In a separate bowl crumble 3/4 of your stilton, add in your mayo and sour cream then combine, use a fork to really break down the cheese, get some black pepper in there too. Once you’re happy it’s mixed well, toss over your lettuce mix and give it all a stir. Pile the dressed salad into the lettuce cups, lift your crispy bacon out of the pan and sprinkle over, crumble over the last of the stilton and some of those crispy salad onions you get. At the last minute finely chop your spring onions and dash them over the top too. Bonza. 1 heaped teaspoon parmesan 2 tablespoons of spreadable butter few spring of fresh parsley finely chopped (or a sprinkle of dried) 100g grated mozzarella & cheddar mix

You’re going to need a large non-stick pan on a medium heat. In a bowl combine your garlic, parmesan, butter and parsley, give it a good old mix, season it, obviously, then pop it to one side.

Now cut your baguettes into 1cm slices, spread some of the garlic butter on one side of all of them. Then, working in batches, lay half of the slices, butter side down in your hot pan, place a good pinch of grated cheese on the naked side, then top with the other half of your garlic slices, butter side up.

remove them from the pan and wait an agonising few minutes before eating them. Ridiculously good, thank me later.

Give these rascals five or six minutes then carefully flip them over for another 4 minutes,

Peach Sangria Everyone loves a Sangria, it’s a summer staple, but all the red wine and brandy are a one way ticket to the mother of all bad heads. So for this I’ve lightened everything up a bit for a real summery little number that still packs a punch. Get yourself a big jug, 2/3’s fill it with ice and pour over 100ml of peach gin, followed by 500ml of white rioja, then top the lot up with pink lemonade. Throw in some fruit, normally I’d use whatever I had lying about but I had to do photos for a magazine so I opted for watermelon, strawberries and rosemary which all worked perfectly. Give the whole thing a few stirs with a wooden spoon (I don’t know the story behind the spoon) then enjoy in your garden, balcony, doorstep, windowsill or roof. Cheers. Rochdale Style | 39

What is the HydraFacial treatment and why is it so popular? Style's Editor, Ruth Parkinson, recently headed to the Aesthetic Rooms in Norden village to find out… Excited to try out the increasingly popular HydraFacial, I arrived at the beautiful Aesthetic Rooms on Edenfield Road. My friendly and knowledgeable therapist Steph explained that this powerful 6-in-one treatment definitely isn't your typical facial (don't expect to take a nap)... in fact, after cleansing, one of the first steps is to vacuum out your pores! And yes, it really does feel like a tiny vacuum cleaner on your skin but here’s the sciencey part - the machine's handpiece holds patented spiralized treatment tips equipped with "vortex technology". The device actually sucks gunk from your pores and at the end you can see all that was removed! The treatment essentially combines a microdermabrasion-like treatment with an infusion of serums. You get deep cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, hydration, lymphatic drainage, skin resurfacing and antioxidant protection… all in one 40 minute treatment. It delivers potent botanical ingredients which contain nutrients such as hyaluronic acid (HA), peptides and powerful antioxidants. These skin-friendly ingredients hydrate and replenish the skin to counteract damage caused by pollution, sun exposure and emotional and physical stress (yes, stress really does show up on our faces!). Hydrafacial is suitable for all skin types - I have sensitive skin which I discussed with Steph during my consultation. She explained that it is normal to experience a mild tingle during the acid peel stage of the treatment so that I knew what to expect. The improvement in my skin tone and texture was apparent immediately but the following day this improved even further and I had a bright and squeaky clean complexion. Make up also seemed to sit better on my skin and stay put for longer. Safe to say I’m hooked and I can’t wait for my next HydraFacial. As our skin is constantly renewing and changing, Steph explained how regular monthly treatments keep your skin clear of dead skin cells, excess dirt, old fake tan and debris which can make it look dull as well as causing breakouts. The HydraFacial is a treatment that you can really feel working and the results speak for themselves. There’s absolutely no downtime so it’s perfect for creating a radiant glow just before that special event. Find out more at www.aestheticrooms.co.uk or call 07903146247 / 01706 593019. What's On in the Arts in Rochdale Town Centre Rochdale Town Centre is looking better than I can ever remember and it promises to improve even further will the renovation of our town hall and the transformation of the surrounding area. Councillor Janet Emsley, Cabinet Member for Equalities, Safety, and Reform, said: "The town hall will become a free-to-attend visitor attraction and will be open to the public five days per week. It will feature the new Welcome Gallery which will showcase the history of the building through interactive exhibitions and in artworks and stories from communities across Rochdale. "Many of the decorative painted surfaces will have been restored and on full display in historic rooms for the public to explore, guided by volunteers who will be on hand to offer advice or answer questions. Town Hall Square will offer new, exciting opportunities for cultural and arts events and will itself feature exciting new artworks including the decorative stone carpet outside the main entrance with carved images and motifs created by a local artist.

Steve Cooke Arts Columnist

"From 2024, there will be a full public programme of events taking place within the town hall and in the new Town Hall Square. Activities will range in size and scale, everything from half term kids activities to community-led lantern parades, large-scale art installations, and programmes of cultural and creative activity that enhance curriculum needs for the borough’s children and young people."

A walk around the town centre is becoming like a visit to a rather exciting, innovative, living art gallery, with a plethora of stunning murals including the latest contribution from local artist Doodlher. Add to that live music, theatre plus of course some excellent shopping opportunities and some amazing hostelries to suit every taste and most pockets, our town centre is well worth a visit.

VISUAL ART Victoria Whittaker [Doodlher] is a Rochdale based pen artist with a passion for telling stories and sparking curiosity through her stunning paper illustrations and wall murals. Surprisingly Doodlher never received any formal art training although she almost chose Fine Art as a university course but opted for studying French. She explains that she was worried that turning her natural love for drawing into an academic pursuit could threaten its integrity: "I didn’t want it to become a chore, and I wanted to keep it on my terms. Instead, I did my French degree, and enjoyed art on the side".

She cites places, people, stories, and history as huge influences to her work, stating that she enjoys working to topical themes and sharing messages through her art. Vic has been commissioned many times to design and create mural art, both indoors and outdoors. Despite their size, these murals, like paper size artwork, all share black pen as their common feature. You can encounter her work across our town centre at: Co-operative Hub, Drake Street, Gregory Couzens Hair Studio, Bombay Brew Rochdale, The Duke of Wellington Mural and her very latest, just completed near the entrance to the Exchange Shopping Centre. Visit: doodlher.com TOUCHSTONES This autumn, all four of the gallery spaces will be taken over by Mischief, an exhibition featuring new textile art and selected pieces from the archives of New York-based queer feminist artist and designer Liz Collins and curated by Julia Bryan-Wilson. Showcasing the breadth of Collins’ work and continuing threads throughout her career to date, the exhibition will also showcase the ties to industrial making methods, from traditional and low-tech to modern hi-tech approaches, with implicit links to Rochdale’s own historic textile industry.

In addition to Curator Bryan Beresford introducing the upcoming set of exhibitions for October by the celebrated American artist Liz Collins, Mark Doyle, Head of Culture, Engagement and Heritage outlined exciting possibilities arising from a recent successful bid to the Culture Development Fund of the Arts Council. He explained that change was due, that the Touchstones building needed a new lease of life with more flexibility and usage needs. The ground floor could be re-structured as two wings either side of a revised central reception-shop area. The ‘colleges side’ wing could be devoted to creative learning, with education and studio spaces. The ‘memorial gardens side’ wing could be stripped back and accommodate a mezzanine level, allowing for both commercial and creative integrated collections and dining areas, including a 100-seat theatre space.

TOUCHSTONES CREATIVE WRITING GROUP

After a two-year delay due to the pandemic, organisers are promising that this year is going to be well worth the wait.

Based at Touchstones, smack dab in the centre of town, is Touchstones Creative Writing Group [TCWG], the largest creative writing group in the Rochdale borough. Established in 2009 with a current membership of over 180.

Performers announced so far include headliners The Fratellis, The Northern Soultrain, Abbie Ozard, Aziz Ibrahim, ENTT, Firewoodisland and DJ Dave Sweetmore.

During the past twelve months the Group has made real progress, in confidence in its performances, and in achieving publication of its members' work.

Main stage (Hopwood Hall College): 1pm - 10.45pm Indoor stages: from 1pm Food and Drink Village: 12noon - 11pm

Recent activities have included a performance of the 'Mask of Anarchy' which was filmed and shown at the Literature & Ideas Festival, and the publication of an Anthology, "A Diamond Co-operative", containing the work of the TCWG members. A few years ago, they formed a new performance group, TCWG Pulling Threads, which aims to pull people together who otherwise may not have the courage or conviction to join the group. In 2014 and in the following 3 years, TCWG Pulling Threads performed its project for the WW1 commemorations, performing at the Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival and Armistice Day, plus several other venues, including Vibe in Drake Street, and in the boroughs of Rochdale and Bury.

Indoor venues include The Flying Horse Hotel, The Empire, The Medicine Tap and Hoochi Koochi. Tickets £7 visit: www.rochdale.gov.uk/feelgoodfestival

CREATIVE WRITING FALINGE WRITING GROUP A short walk out of the town centre to Falinge Park you can find Falinge Writing Group; a successful addition to the writing groups of Rochdale. In its first year, it has produced a book of both prose and poetry in response to the Gaia exhibition in Rochdale Central library. The writing group was led in this project by Seamus Kelly and the resultant booklet One World, One Chance has been very well received. 44 | Rochdale Style

Currently, they are performing their new 'Steampunk' production, again written by members. This was performed recently at Castleton Literary & Scientific Society and is again due to be performed for the U3A at the Coach House in Littleborough in September. Details will be on the website soon. Visit: touchstonescreativewritinggroup.com, for lots of poetry and short stories, plus details of current workshops... well worth a visit! A town centre to be proud of with opportunities to be excited by. It is down to us to engage and be part of a bright future. Steve Cooke

OKLAHOMA! COMES TO WHITWORTH Whitworth Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society is set to return to the stage, following a two year hiatus during the pandemic, with their production of the Rogers and Hammerstein classic, Oklahoma! The show will run from Monday 4th July until Saturday 9th July (with a matinee) at St John’s Hall, Whitworth. Director and society Chair Andy Kelly commented: “I’m so pleased to see the society back doing what it does best, especially with the Oscar, Tony, Olivier, and Pulitzer winning Oklahoma! It’s going to be a real treat”. Set in the eponymous Southern US state, Oklahoma! tells the story of the love triangle between cowboy Curly McLain, ingenue Laurey Williams and her farmhand, Jud Fry, in the run-up to the box social. Meanwhile, travelling salesman Ali Hakim tries to drive a wedge between cowboy Will Parker and his flirtatious fiancée, Ado Annie. Following her run in as Adelaide in Whitworth’s production of Guy’s and Dolls and Ulla in The Producers by Rochdale Musical Theatre Company’s, Annabelle Taylor is returning to the stage as Ado Annie. Annabelle commented: “I’m thrilled to see Whitworth putting on shows again and of course to be playing a character as fun as Ado Annie!” The part of Laurey Williams is set to be played by local actress Leonie Richardson, who you may recognise as Elle Woods from Rochdale Musical Theatre Company’s production of Legally Blonde. She said: ‘It’s such a joy to be back with WAMDS, the first-ever society that I performed with 10 years ago, for their production of Oklahoma. It’s always exciting to have the opportunity to reinvent the classics and that’s exactly what I can’t wait to do with Laurey. With such a wonderful and talented group of people, it’s guaranteed to be a special show.’ Never a society to stick to the conventional, WAMDS are adding some fresh new twists to the classic musical. While the script remains the same, Musical Director, Dr Jeremy Sleith, is reimagining the score- dispensing with the traditional orchestra and instead opting for a six-piece country band. Likewise, the costume team is doing away with the old fashioned hoop skirts in favour of Americana style costumes. While previous pantomimes and plays at St John’s Hall have taken place in the standard proscenium layout, with rows of the audience facing the stage, the production team have decided to do Oklahoma! in the round. The audience will have an immersive experience of the show, with front row seats being made up of benches and hay bales and a pot of chilli-con-carne being served during the interval for supper. Tickets start from just £10 and are available at: www.ticketsource.co.uk/wamds. 46 | Rochdale Style

THEATRE REVIEW: THE PRODUCERS Rochdale Musical Theatre Company Champness Hall, Rochdale - May 2022

“A satiric masterpiece”, “it was shocking outrageous and insulting”, and I, along with the rest of the audience at Rochdale musical theatre company’s latest production, ‘The Producers’, loved every minute of it. The production follows Max, a washed-up Broadway producer and Leo, an accountant/wannabe Broadway producer. The duo go out and search for the worst script, director and cast to create an undoubtable Broadway flop. The pair hope their production of 'Springtime for Hitler' will close before its even opened, so they can escape to Rio with the two million dollars raised for the production. Returning to the Champness Hall, Rochdale for the second time, RMTC welcomed back the production team which brought you ‘Legally Blonde’ in October last year. Jess Bray took on the mammoth task of directing ‘The Producers’ and making the piece fit the three-level stage at Champness hall. She has a way of using this unusual stage to her advantage, making the space seem to be one level from an audience perspective. Complementing Jess’s direction, Nikki Cooke choreographed each musical number using the ensemble members. I love watching musicals which choreograph for the ensemble with simple but effective moves. Chris Amis and Steven Brady created a simple yet effective set for this production. Somehow Chris and his team slimmed down the bulk and made each and every scene change flow. Musically this show has many challenging numbers as it is host to varied musical styles. Chris Addington delivered yet again, a fabulous sound along with his show band. Ulla Inga Hansen Benson Yansen Tallen Hallen Svaden Swanson, but for this review we shall just refer to her as Ulla, is a role that needs a triple threat, and Rochdale’s answer to this challenge was Annabelle Taylor. Annabelle certainly has it, and she flaunted it and stunned the audience with a beautiful performance. Her comedy timing was perfect, not to mention her Swedish accent! Roger DeBris, the flamboyant gay man and also Max’s director of choice, was played by Josh Hindle. He entered the stage in a floor length sequined gown and his performance of ‘Keep It Gay’ certainly got the audience pumped and ready for his version of Springtime for Hitler. Carmen Ghia (Michael Twigg), Debris’ equally flamboyant partner, was over the top and minced across the stage bouncing off Josh. This partnership worked well and was a great piece of casting from the production team. The creator of the ill-fated play, Franz Liebkind, a Neo-Nazi who worships Adolf Hitler was played by Ben Maguire who excelled in this role. From outrageous dance routines to talking to his pigeons, Ben was a joy to watch - you can tell he was enjoying performing it as much as the audience enjoyed watching it. Leo Bloom, played by Zac Grenier, has the biggest character development throughout the show, starting as a bumbling wimp, to being a brave fraudulent Broadway Producer. And Zac did not disappoint: a stellar performance that we have come to expect from Zac. For me the performance of the show went to Mike Wignall as Max. When watching a musical with a massive cult following, there is always a concern that an actor will try to make a carbon copy of the original performance. But as soon as Mike made his entrance, he made the role is own. Mike commanded the stage and vocals excelled with a range of musical numbers. Beauty: Desert island essentials Summer is upon us and the age old question of the ‘must have desert island make up product‘ comes to mind! Mine would have to be a multi-use make up item I could use for eyes, lips and cheeks. Save on essential suitcase space and free up room for an extra pair of your favourite heels with a few multitasking products... Let’s start with bronzer. Bronzing palettes are great for adding colour to warm up your complexion and leave a sunkissed glow to your skin but did you know bronzer can be used anywhere on the body? It looks lovely swept down the shins for a touch of tan on those legs or as a quick fix to deepen the colour of your legs on an unexpected sunny day. Bronzer can also be applied to eyelids as an eyeshadow which really complements a sun kissed beach look. If your bronzing palette has different shades then why not try using the lighter shades to highlight the under brow and the deeper shades in the eye crease for contour and definition? Next is the highlighter pencil which has so many uses. Applied to the brow bone it can make your eyebrows appear more defined and make your brow bone pop. Applied to the centre of the upper and lower lip gives the illusion of fuller lips. Try it over your existing lip colours to alter and lighten and transform them into completely new shades; have a play and be creative. Use on a blemish as a concealer, down the centre of the nose to contour or above the lip in the cupid’s bow to create a fuller looking top lip. You can even apply to your inner eye along the water line as an eye opener to make the whites of your eye look brighter. Did you ever think you can use a lipstick as a blusher? Apply to the apples of your cheeks and blend well using your fingertips. If you have red/orange lipstick you can use under the eyes to conceal dark circles! Less is more and blend well, try it and see! Do you have a setting powder? You can use it to set your foundation, remove excess shine or apply it over concealer so that it doesn’t crack when you sweat. It goes on sheer so you can keep using it throughout the day without the worry of it looking too cakey or heavy. Due to it being sheer, you can use it throughout the seasons no matter what your natural skin shade. Its multi use is an interesting one, it can be applied over a lipstick to mattify or can be used under eyes as protection when applying a smokey or heavier made up eye. We all need an SPF to protect our skin and in the summer months especially. To save space for your holiday essentials why not use a CC Cream with a SPF50. This can then be used as a tinted moisturiser with a light coverage and at the same time protect you from the sun and its harmful rays. STREET EAT DISHES UP ROYAL PLATINUM PARTY The platinum bank holiday return of the Street Eat festival brought huge crowds to Rochdale town centre for a right royal party, as over 2,500 tucked into a regal helping of food, drink, family entertainment and live music.

There were fun activities and rides for the children, including Punch & Judy shows every hour. Diana Lynham from Happy Radio UK hosted the sound stage, with a line-up of live music featuring local favourites Noel Fraser, Shenanigans, Jackson Kay and Turners Dance Studios.

The event on The Butts was basked in sunshine and large crowds enjoyed the party atmosphere having their tastebuds tickled and their thirsts quenched whilst sampling tasty dishes from the town centre’s bars and restaurants.

The event organised by Rochdale Business Improvement District (BID) and supported by Rochdale Borough Council showcased the town’s best food and drink establishments with dozens of mouth-watering dishes including Italian, Indian, English, German, American, Mexican and more. Traders included Bombay Brew, Vicolo Del Vino, The Medicine Tap, The Flying Horse, The Baum, Uno Burrito, The Treehouse Bar, Bean, Bank Top Farm and Keep It Sweet.

It was the first time the festival had been held since 2019 due to the pandemic and BID manager Paul Ambrose said it was great to be back: “It was a superb day, the biggest street party in town! So many visitors have been saying how much they enjoyed it and it was great to see the event return for the jubilee. All of our traders were busy and some needed to quickly re-stock by mid-afternoon as they were starting to run out! The event provided a great boost to our town centre food and drinks venues and certainly helped to raise their profile. I’m sure they’ll have gained many new return visitors after so many customers were impressed with the tasty dishes. It was a great team effort and I’d like to thank the council for their support and the amazing town centre food and drink businesses as without them the day couldn’t happen. Thank you to the thousands of visitors who created such a celebratory and party atmosphere.”

Councillor Janet Emsley, deputy leader and cabinet member for events said: “It was great to see the town centre so busy, the sun shining and the union jack bunting flying! It was a very memorable day and the food from all corners of the globe was fabulous. You don’t need to wait until Street Eat returns… these fantastic restaurants and bars are open every week, so do support your local businesses and get a table booked!” To find out more about forthcoming events on the borough’s calendar, visit www.rochdale.gov.uk/events

SUMMER FASHION TRENDS

by Style's Fashion Editor Mollie Butterworth Hey! It’s Mollie here, I am thrilled to be continuing my partnership as Fashion Editor for Rochdale Style Magazine. I'm here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of fashion, and if you have any specific questions please do reach out. Today I am going to share everything you need to know and shop this summer, from current trends and outfit ideas. We have all been ready to pack away our coats and reunite with our favourite summer pieces since January, but now that summer is officially here you may have all breathed a sigh of relief. It is no exaggeration to say we are owed one amazing summer this year. Even if the weather doesn't play ball, at this point we are going all in on summer fashion! Whether you’re soaking up the sun during your first holiday in what feels like forever or you’re having a staycay! After two summers of stop and start lockdowns there is a high chance you’re lacking a few key essentials to make getting ready in the heat a breeze. CURRENT TRENDS & OUTFIT IDEAS: WEDDINGS This is the year of the weddings, more people are getting married this year than ever, and it may feel like you have a wedding every other weekend! This also means more wedding outfits and more dilemmas over what to wear. Celebrating your loved ones is often a blast, but the excitement can easily be derailed by the panic of what to wear. It is a unique challenge to decide on an appropriate outfit that also makes you feel amazing, especially if getting glam isn’t your thing! The one no-no, unless stated on the invite is, don’t wear white, cream or ivory! For a summer wedding outfit I would tend to lean towards bright colours and soft prints! Plus once you’ve worn the dress for the wedding, team with trainer’s for an effortless stylish day dress. Remember it is better to be overdressed than underdressed, always, for whatever the occasion!

PRINT From the hottest colour of the year to Summer’s most playful and trippy print. In my previous article we talked about all things colour, which by the way is still here to stay, especially green going into Summer 2023! But aside from colour, print is also big and as a self confessed print lover I couldn’t be happier! Instagram has really changed the game and made many brands focus on how clothes translate into imagery, meaning the bolder and brighter the print the better. These prints can often look overpowering on the hanger, but I couldn’t recommend enough trying them on as I think you will be pleasantly surprised! Whether it’s floral, stripes, waves or animal print this summer has it all. SUMMER ACCESSORIES The perfect way to refresh any summer outfit is down to your accessories. From straw bags, to bright hair accessories this season has it all, making it super easy to dip your toe into the accessories game, and choose the best ways to complete your outfit. We have to take a moment to talk about the bulldog hair clip, it’s finally made it’s return from the 90’s and we are all totally obsessed. Super easy way to create a chic hair style, plus they are an essential for on holiday around the pool (trust me!). It is completely up to you how subtle or crazy you go with the clip, but once you’ve tried one they will be no going back. Staying on trend with hair accessories, the headband is still here to stay too... this time a soft pastel colour or bold print is the way to go. As always straw bags are making there comeback for SS22, this years bags are featuring fringe and shell detailing staying in line with one of the seasons hottest trends, the bohemian effect. MY PERSONAL TOP TIP Dress for you, and nobody else. Our personal style is the way we can express ourselves to the rest of the world, the only main trend you need to follow is to make sure it’s you. As always, shop small and shop happy. See you again soon, Mollie x Instagram @mollieb_ Rochdale Style | 55

LOCAL THESPIANS PAY HOMAGE TO ROCHDALE’S HISTORY IN NEW PLAY A group of local actors have had their first read-through of a new play - Cotton Famine Road. The play, which tells the story of Rochdale mill workers during the 1860s, had its first observed readthrough at Touchstones Rochdale on Wednesday. Actors from local theatre groups performed selected scenes to an audience of representatives from Rochdale Council and local arts organisations. The play tells the story of Jessie, an Irish immigrant who struggles to keep her daughters fed and community together during the Cotton Famine. During this period the cotton industry in Rochdale ground to a halt due to the American Civil War and people in Rochdale came out in support of the abolition of slavery. The story features a number of real-life figures including leading black activists from the time such as Sarah Parker Remond, a lecturer who toured Britain to rally support for the abolitionist movement. John Bright, the Liberal MP and Rochdale mill owner, who opposed slavery in parliament and corresponded with US President Abraham Lincoln also appears in the piece which incorporates verbatim quotes from their orations as well as extracts from contemporary Cotton Famine poetry, written in Lancashire dialect. The script is being written and produced by Mick Martin and Jude Wright from Bent Architect theatre company, following the tour of their recent production Full English. Mick Martin whose previous works include Once Upon a Time in Wigan, England, Arise! and Broken Time, also wrote and directed the 2017 play It’s in the Blood, about Rochdale and Oldham’s heritage as rugby league towns. It was during rehearsals for It’s in the Blood that the idea for Cotton Famine Road began to take shape. Local performer, Eleanor Kelly said: “As soon as I started reading about the Cotton Famine, I knew we had to create a piece of theatre about it. A lot of people in Rochdale have never heard of it and it's a real story of allyship that we ought to pay tribute to. I’m delighted that Mick and Jude have taken on the project and to see local actors breathe life into the script.” 58 | Rochdale Style

Mick Martin commented: “I met Eleanor a few years ago on a previous project after which she suggested I look at the cotton famine and Rochdale's unique role in that I was immediately intrigued, it's not just a powerful story, it's also a very relevant one to this day and age too on many levels. It's a story of working class people abandoned by the state to go hungry and suffer, of working people banding together to stand up for a principle, people who made common cause with the men and women and children in the slave fields of the American south despite immense hardship. It reaches across time, geography, and cultural boundaries, from the the 1860's right up to today, from the cotton mills of Lancashire right across to the slave fields of the US to speak of human dignity and compassion, a story Rochdale should be very proud of.” The piece has been supported by Arts Council England throughout its research and development phase and has recently received a grant from the Granada Foundation, alongside support from local organisations including Touchstones, the Rooley Moor Neighbourhood Forum and Cartwheel Arts. The team behind it is currently looking to secure further funding, with a view to staging the play in Rochdale next year, as part of a wider arts project exploring the Cotton Famine. They would like to encourage anyone interested in assisting with funding the piece to get in contact via the dedicated website: www.cottonfamineroad.weebly.com Promo video: cottonfamineroad.weebly.com/films

CARTWHEEL ARTS WINS PILOTLIGHT 360 & WESTON CHARITY AWARD Selected from over 100 applicants, Cartwheel Arts in Heywood has been awarded the Pilotlight 360 & Weston Charity Award enabling them to continue working with Rochdale's diverse communities.

Director Hebe Reilly commented: “This is such exciting news for Cartwheel Arts. As a new Director, I really welcome the support and guidance of the Pilotlight mentors, and am looking forward to guiding the company as we transition out of the pandemic, and continue to deliver cutting edge participatory arts practise.” Cartwheel has big ambitions for the future - to continue to engage under-represented communities with high-quality creative and cultural experiences, and to raise the profile of their activities. Based in Heywood, Cartwheel Arts has been delivering Art for a Reason - using the arts to address social issues - for over 35 years. They promote social inclusion and cohesion through vibrant, innovative, high-quality arts projects.

The award takes the form of a grant alongside a dedicated mentoring scheme. In an area where many neighbourhoods rank in the top 10% most deprived nationally, this award will go a long way in ensuring that everyone has equal access to their creativity and local culture. The Pilotlight 360 mentorship is a comprehensive 10-month programme, which matches the organisation with four senior business leaders who will support our development and growth.

With a focus on participation, Cartwheel Arts enables people who may have had little experience of the arts to explore and develop their creativity and talents, generating a sense of ownership and pride. For more information visit: cartwheelarts.org.uk

BOROUGH'S NEW MAYOR ELECTED The borough of Rochdale recently welcomed its new mayor, as Councillor Ali Ahmed was sworn in to office during a ceremony in Rochdale.

Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed paid tribute to the new mayor and described some of his qualities: “Caring and kind to all, Ali Ahmed will make an excellent mayor for everyone in the borough.”

The evening, at Number One Riverside, was attended by former mayors, deputy lieutenants as well as other distinguished guests and community leaders as the departing mayor Councillor Aasim Rashid and Mayoress Rifit Rashid, handed over their chains of office.

After receiving his chain, the new mayor said words of thanks. Born and brought up in Rochdale, Councillor Ahmed wants to see the borough continue to grow and thrive: “I am so proud to take up this role, it is an emotional evening for me. Now, as we hope we’re seeing the back of Covid I look forward as the mayor of the borough with my wife as my mayoress and our consort to do all we can to help promote our borough as we look to the future. We will do all we can to raise as much money for my chosen charities as possible and can’t wait to get started. It’s going to be a busy and exciting year.”

The evening began with a rousing fanfare played by Rochdale Music Service. Council leader Neil Emmott said he is pleased Councillor Ali will have the honour of being mayor during the Queen’s jubilee year: “Ali is also our first Rochdale born mayor of Bangladeshi heritage so that is a significant milestone. I congratulate him on the appointment and I know how committed to the local community he is.” 62 | Rochdale Style

Mayoress Syeda Farjana Begum, a Rochdale resident for 18 years and mother to their five children who are all in full time education said she was looking forward to the year ahead. Their consort will be Sultan Ali. First elected as a councillor in 1996 he was mayor of Rochdale in 2003-2004. The Mayor’s Charity Appeal for 2022/23 will be raising funds for Springhill Hospice, Jolly Josh, Parkinsons UK, Get Together After Serving, Rochdale Connections Trust and other local charities.

THE SPRATS HAVE IT! NEW LOCAL BAND WIN FESTIVAL SLOT Local rock band The Sprats have been awarded a slot on the main stage at this summer’s Rochdale Feel Good Festival.

member for events councillor Janet Emsley, musician Aziz Ibrahim and councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for culture.

The band have won first prize in this year’s ‘Feel Good – Battle of the Bands’ competition and will open the main stage on Saturday 13 August supporting acts, including The Fratellis.

Singer/songwriter Jack Carroll from Heywood won the public vote and will be also be on the festival line-up, performing at The Baum on Toad Lane following The Fratellis headline set.

The four-piece, who released their debut single in April and have been playing across the region in the last few months, were the judges’ favourites after impressing with their energy, stage presence and sound.

Tickets for the main stage (£7) are on sale at rochdalefeelgoodfestival.co.uk

The band, which was only formed in 2021, comprises two members from Rochdale (singer Brad Ellor and drummer Jak Marshall) and two from Burnley (guitarist Alex McArdle and keyboard player Connor Watson-Reid). Brad said he was shocked to receive the phone call confirming the result: “Even though we knew we were in the final it was a big surprise to find out we’d actually won. We played our first gig as a band at the beginning of the year, so never expected to be on the same stage as The Fratellis this year. We can’t wait for it and I’m sure our local fans can’t, we’ll definitely be seeing them there.” The band were short-listed through a Facebook vote before their videos were assessed by the judges - music specialist Rob Kerford - owner of Sonic PR which promotes of some of Europe’s biggest musicians, DJ and new music champion Dave Sweetmore, cabinet Rochdale Style | 63

LETTERS OF LOVE FOR UKRAINE School children from across the borough, and beyond, have supported the Rochdale Ukrainian Community by writing thousands of inspiring and hopeful letters to other children in refugee centres across Eastern Europe and an orphanage in Lviv. Rochdale Borough Council employee Michael Buczman is volunteering for Rochdale Ukrainian Community group coordinating the initiative. Alongside many volunteers from the group he contacted local schools to take part in the letter writing project to children in Ukraine who are being displaced by the war and are witnessing unimaginable devastation. 3,000 letters have come in from all across the borough and beyond, including St Michael’s Primary Middleton, St Luke’s Primary Heywood and Meanwood Primary Rochdale. Neighbouring Oldham school, Blue Coat, got involved in the initiative too and provided over 800 letters alone. Michael said: “The response to this has been phenomenal, the show of support is something we really hope the children and their families will appreciate. The time and effort young people have put into these letters is incredible, the letters are beautifully decorated and full of hope. We know the scenes in Ukraine must be really challenging for young people in the UK to understand so to see their letters full of love and kindness is really uplifting. Thanks to all the schools that have taken part so far and the volunteers who have been working with the schools, it really means a lot to so many. We hope more schools will take part as we know that children here in the UK can make a difference.”

64 | Rochdale Style

It is hoped that the letters show young people and their family/carers that people across Rochdale and the North West are supporting them and thinking about them. The orphanage the volunteers are supporting in Sambir, which is in the Lviv region of Ukraine, is now also providing care for refugees who have fled the conflict in the east of the country. The Rochdale Ukrainian Club has been supporting the orphanage for many years and the borough of Rochdale has been twinned with Lviv since 1992. Each year the Ukrainian flag is raised outside the town hall to show support and solidarity to the region. Follow Rochdale Ukrainian Community’s Facebook page to find out ways you can support the local effort: facebook.com/rochdaleukrainianclub
