Most people have photographic memories, so the right photos will dramatically enhance your brand and build trust. Make sure your website and social media are chocked full of visuals of your goods, events and yourself.

Diversity Or Not In The Beauty Industry Tamara Penn

W

ith upto 50 foundation colors in all shades and hues, who wouldn’t think that diversity in the beauty industry is now accepted, even celebrated. The last five years have moved towards inclusivity of more people of color being represented, mainly driven by social media, with major cosmetic giants such as, Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty Line and MAC, taking the reigns. It’s safe to say that the days of supermodel Iman having to blend her own foundation on photo shoots are gone… or are they? Some popular beauty influencers are not impressed with how slow this progression has been.

“Makeup brands have had this relationship with women of color that is very trend based. “ Even photographers are getting in on the conversation. Alexis Lubomirski, beauty photographer who shot the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wedding portraits, has seen lighting issues turn into a battle of aesthetics. “Some creative directors are afraid of highlights on darker skins because they feel it is not representative of the natural color of the girl’s skin,” he said.

Similarly, change is taking place in hair care. Led by influential stars like Wanda Sykes and Tracee Ellis Ross, who wear their hair unprocessed, is “redefining Hollywood glamour,” said Yet it’s a start, there is a further need for improvement. “We’re celebrity hairstylist Nai’vasha Johnson. This is “absolutely stuck in a place that is politically correct,” Tym Buacharern, a tied to race,” she said. “When you get into perms and relaxers makeup artist who has worked on “Black Panther,” and all of these things to alter what is naturally yours, let’s be “Dreamgirls” and the “Hunger Games” series, criticizes beauty honest, it’s embracing a race or nationality that is not your schools for not doing enough. “Let’s take it to a place that’s real own.” and lasting. For example, every brand is launching 40 foundation colors now because it’s the trendy thing to do. But is In a time lapsed video, London Myers, an up-and-coming the brand actually doing the work — the initiatives and Cameroonian-Irish model, documented her experience outreach? It’s not just about putting a black model next to Gigi backstage as she waited while stylists passed her by. She wrote Hadid. The stock needs to be there, and not only 40 shades at in the post: your Times Square store. The people at the counter need training.” Fenty Beauty campaign below

“Indeed, education is often cited as an issue. They teach predominantly how to work on Caucasians,” he goes on to say. Moreover, he believes that younger makeup artists are relying too much on YouTube tutorials. “YouTube is amazing for inspiration when you’re experienced, but it does the young makeup artist a major disservice because you’re learning from someone who’s great on doing makeup only on himself or herself,” Mr. Buacharern says. “You need to learn the fundamentals first, “ he continues, “Those skills, include shade matching, finding the right formulas for skin types and working with who is in front of you.” It’s no surprise that with more women of color being leading ladies, there are reasonable challenges with entrusting their image to these professionals. “ It’s about being comfortable and not having to worry about the hair and makeup part so they can focus on the work of acting,” Tym concludes. It has been known that some blockcharting actresses have hired their own glam squad to perfect their look. Sam Fine, a makeup artist known for working with Naomi Campbell, Iman and Queen Latifah, is not convinced. Being in the industry since 1991, he has seen cosmetics collections developed for women of color come and go. “There was Revlon, when they released ColorStyle, and also Maybelline Shades of You — where are they now?” Mr. Fine said. 16

“I don’t need special treatment from anyone. What I need is for hairstylists to learn how to do black hair. I’m so tired of people avoiding doing my hair at shows. How dare you try to send me down the runway with a linty busted afro. We all know if you tried this on a white model, you’d be #canceled.”

making it easier for customers to get their hands on what were once considered niche products,” she says. “The mass expansion of the natural hair market forced independent blackowned companies to compete with corporations that previously ignored it.”

Not all bad, with some make up brands launching expansive cosmetic lines, more entrepreneurs of color, such as The Lip Bar and Briogeo, are starting to put its mark on this complex industry; however, natural hair discrimination in the workplace still feel commonplace (though both California and New York recently passed laws against it ). Brands and backstage runway shows are continuing to come under fire. Leona Wilson, NYC salon owner of LW Salon, describes the diversification of the hair-care market as a blessing and a curse, “The blessing? The giants took ‘us’ from specialty stores or from small shelf space to major retailers,

In Los Angeles Times, it indicated that almost 71% of black adults in the U.S. have worn their hair natural at least once by 2016. “We [women of color] have spending power, so it goes far beyond a trend for companies: It’s in their best economic interest to be more inclusive. Black women spend 80% more on cosmetics than our non-black counterparts, ” Wilson claims. It is clear that as more people of color demand for equality in the beauty sector, more “true” research, development and marketing dollars will be expected to satisfy all demographics. With this issue questioning the relevancy of these company that lacks support for diversity, it is in its best interest for major cosmetic companies to get on board, to promote its longevity in the industry and the overall bottom line.
