Real Estate Sales and Property Management

t’s October and it’s time to get going. Holiday advertising reared it’s head LAST month—that’s right, people saw a gingerbread man touting store layaway programs and toy outlets publicizing hot holiday must-haves on air in September—all while many of us were still in swimsuits by the pool contemplating our Halloween costumes. I guess the hope for higher sales this holiday season (a figure that accounts for approximately 20 percent of all annual retail activity), is pushing merchants to roll up their sleeves and get competitive with a not-so-subliminal campaign message: “The earlier the better.” To top it off, this year there are only 25 days between Christmas and Black Friday (November 29). Last year, we had 32 days—five full weekends for credit-card-debt building; this year we’ve got just four weekends to do the damage. Luckily, this month Style has a few strategies to bolster your 2013 gifting game plan. Firstly, ahem, and without further ado, we present Style Magazine’s 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards with page after page of the area’s most favorite people, places, businesses and much more, all voted for by you, the readers! You will see there’s a category for just about everything, which makes for a handy list of possible places to patronize as you fill your sleigh this October and November (remember, the earlier the better because holiday shopping in December is just unheard of these days). People practically get whiplash if you dare say you haven’t finished your list by December. Disclaimer: If you are a shamed last minute shopper like me, don’t miss our December issue’s “Holiday Gift Guide” for instant ideas you can find locally. Secondly—both in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to aid in the accrual of amazing stocking stuffers—turn the page to this month’s FYI where you’ll find “The 10 Spot” complete with 10 purposeful (and pretty cool) products to make the month (and the holidays) pinker for everyone; when you purchase any of these items you will be contributing to the effort to kick breast cancer to the curb. Speaking of the curb, what about Thanksgiving? I almost forgot, just like everyone else on the fast track to tinsel tidings. One of my most favorite holidays, Turkey Day, is a time to savor your family’s finest food with cheer and appreciation for all. Since sharing is the name of the game on this day of feasts, we at Style hope you will help make our November issues even more bountiful.

SELECTION AND STORAGE When shopping for pears, make sure to select

those that are firm with a smooth skin. A pear’s color doesn’t need to be uniform, and most show a little color change as they ripen. To determine a pear’s ripeness, gently press the fruit at the top, near the stem. If the area has a bit of give, it’s ripe. If the pears you select aren’t perfectly ripe when purchased, they can be placed in a paper bag on the kitchen counter at room temperature. Make sure the pears aren’t stored too close together, as this will force them to ripen too soon. Because of oxidation, once sliced, pears brown quickly. To maintain a fresh and appetizing look, add a dash of lemon, lime or orange juice to the flesh. Pears can be consumed raw, dried, canned or juiced, and pair well with sharp cheeses, chocolate, cinnamon, clove and allspice. — Susan Belknap For the recipe to make Marinated and Grilled New York Steaks with Roasted Pears, Potatoes and Rosemary, visit stylemg.com. ike most regional cuisine, finding an authentic restaurant can be a difficult task in the suburbs. This is especially true of Mexican food. Luckily, Roseville residents have Jalisco Grill to satisfy its collective craving for the “real thing,” with notoriously large portions at affordable prices to boot. I visited their third and newest location off of Sierra College Boulevard recently in desperate desire of a good, cold caldo (soup) to take the edge off the blistering heat. Providentially, Jalisco offers three different seafood versions for their patrons, and unfortunately, that makes deciding on one rather challenging. Eventually, I settled on their Campechana Camaron y Pulpa, a seafood cocktail made with baby octopus and shrimp. The seafood was prepared in its broth with vegetable juice, lime juice, ketchup, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, avocado, cilantro and jalapeños. My campechana was perfect: cool cucumber, delicately chewy seafood, buttery avocado and fiery jalapeño are, in my mind, a perfect marriage of some of Mother Nature’s finest offerings. It also makes for a great hangover cure— for which its restorative properties are renowned. I didn’t have a hangover, but after devouring my oversized caldo, I was grateful to have all my senses working to appreciate Jalisco’s dedication to delicious authentic Mexican food. orror movie legend Vincent Price once said, “It’s as much fun to scare as to be scared.” And that is one of the driving influences behind the creations of Rocklin artist Bill Mang. This commercial contractor—known for his one-of-a-kind fine art—has two favorite holidays: Christmas and Halloween. “I love Christmas, but for me Halloween is a lot more fun,” he explains. This month, we’re in luck: Halloween is a very special time at the Mang residence; they have a fantastic display of creative, crazy Halloween art, as well as Mang’s metal creations. Oozing blood, laser eyes, creepy music, and lots of giant spiders will make young and old recoil and rejoice in delight. (Check it out at 5705 Pearl Drive in Rocklin.) LD: Who or what is your influence? BM: I love science fiction, gothic and fan22 stylemg.com - October 2013

tasy; my art is all over the place. I create dragons, animals, weapons, masks, prototype/props and contemporary art. I get an idea in my head and just go for it. I try and push a piece in a certain direction just to see if I can do it. LD: Why did you start making metal art? BM: I used to make my Halloween characters out of PVC pipe and other plastic materials, but that limited the amount of things I could do. Once I started making metal monsters, they could breathe fire without melting. I asked my family for a welder for Christmas in 2003 and immediately built “Frankie,” a 13-foot fire-breathing dragon named after my dad. I welded him out of mild steel, which is pretty easy to work with...however, it needs to be painted to keep it from rusting. I soon began work-

LD: Other thoughts to share? BM: I have to balance my frustration with some adults not understanding my art; I do this by sharing my art with children. They are the purest of souls [and] see things without preconceived thoughts or prejudice. I can just see by their expressions...they get it and they like it. This is what I live for—it’s the greatest of rewards. LD: Do you have a Halloween night tip? BM: Get here early, we run out of candy pretty quick.

LD: What are the challenges of working with stainless steel? BM: Most people don’t realize how hard I have to work to create the sculpture. It’s frustrating to me that some just don’t get it. Working with stainless is an extremely hard process—every wrinkle, vein and curve has to be cut, bent, pounded and welded. Also, the 14-gauge, 4-by-10-foot sheets of steel are a lot more expensive than mild steel. The tools I use for cutting, sanding and polishing are costly and only available in specialty welding supply shops.

health&wellness increasing their ability to detect a lump, skin dimpling, nipple discharge or a lump in the axilla (arm pit). Yet, Dr. Cherry stresses, “Routine screening mammograms [are] still the gold standard for detection of breast cancer.” The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recently changed their guidelines, recommending mammograms every other year for women over age 50 while the American Cancer Society still recommends them annually for women over 40. This conflicting information can be both frustrating and confusing when trying to decide what the best approach to your breast health is. Dr. Cherry explains, “Studies show that, on average, cancers in women over age 50 grow more slowly and thus

f you ask around, almost everyone can tell you about a friends’, family members’, or even their own fight against breast cancer. With the staggering statistics— one in every eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime (breastcancer.org)—most of us have had an intimate experience with the disease. Thankfully, there’s hope on the horizon.

EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES Education and awareness are crucial, as early detection is one of the largest factors in breast cancer survival rates. Dr. Michelle Cherry, board certified OB/GYN with Marshall Medical, says that doing regular self breast exams, a key component to detecting breast cancer early, empowers women by making them familiar with their breasts and 24 stylemg.com - October 2013

longer intervals between mammograms may be reasonable. However, coming from a family with a history of breast cancer, I will continue with the recommendations of the American Cancer Society and order yearly mammograms on my patients.” Dr. Cherry stresses that each patient’s case is different and the risks and benefits of mammograms should be discussed with your doctor. Digital breast tomosynthesis, referred to as 3-D mammography, is the most advanced technology to date, providing better cancer detection by digitally reconstructing a 3-D image of the breast. It is used in conjunction with traditional 2-D mammography to create better imaging of the breast tissue, allowing radiologists

THE INNOVATION OF 3-D MAMMOGRAMS Improved early detection Reduced number of false positives Improved imaging

TOP RISK FACTORS GENDER: Women are 100 times more likely than men to develop breast cancer AGE: Two out of three invasive breast cancers are found in women over 55 FAMILY HISTORY: Having a mother, sister or daughter with breast cancer

COMBINED HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY: Combination HRT increases the risk by about 75%, even when used for a short time to identify individual structures within the breast without the confusion of overlapping tissue images. This is especially important innovation for women with dense breast tissue in which clear imaging is harder to achieve. “Early detection is critical, and 3-D technology allows us to detect smaller and earlier stage cancers. This not only increases breast cancer detection by 25 percent, but decreases false positives or unnecessary callback examinations by 25 to 40 percent,” says Dr. Michael Norton, medical director of breast imaging at Radiological Associates of Sacramento (RAS). “RAS is the first and currently the only breast imaging provider in Sacramento and the Central Valley to offer 3-D mammography.”

PREVENTION: WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T With hundreds of health gurus touting their new miracle cure for cancer, it can be hard to decipher if there’s any truth to their claims. One thing we do know is that a diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables, with fewer meats and processed foods, is better for your overall health. So is frequent exercise and lower alcohol consumption. “It is interesting to note that the higher one’s weight at the time of diagnosis and the lack of physical exercise can increase one’s risk of breast cancer, its recurrence and mortality. So, eating a well-balanced diet, watching your weight (maintaining a normal body mass index), and exercising routinely may help prevent the occurrence of breast cancer,” Dr. Cherry says. As for cancer-fighting foods, while the verdict is still out on their overall efficacy, the argument can be made that consuming healthy options on a regular basis certainly

The battle against breast cancer is one that should never be traveled alone. A pivotal component of treatment is utilizing the resources and support systems in your area. Quincey Roxburgh, RN, clinical director of the Mercy Cancer Institute (MCI), says taking advantage of the programs dedicated to helping patients through treatment can make a world of difference in their tolerance and overall emotional well-being. “People are beginning to realize the basics of life—rest, relaxation, healthy food and exercise— have a lot to do with their ability to cope during treatment,” Roxburgh says. The Institute offers a plethora of programs to meet the needs of cancer patients in all stages of treatment, including breast cancer support group meetings, which are often followed by a free yoga class to help manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. MCI also offers a Gentle Conditioning class, utilizing gentle stretching and lifting

light weights, for those in treatment who might not be interested in yoga but are still working to retain their physical stamina and help with side effects like decreased appetite. “More and more, research is showing that complementary medicine helps patients through the side effects of their treatment journey. It has been shown to greatly reduce fatigue and anxiety and improve sleep.” Though these sound like basic components of general health, they often fall by the wayside while cancer patients are undergoing treatment. Outside of the emotional challenges of battling breast cancer, the Education coordination and commitments of treatment can be overwhelming. MCI employs a two-pronged approach to patient support—with Nurse Navigators on one side, who help patients manage appointments and coordinate with specialists, and Peer Navigators on the other. MCI describes the Peer Navigator program as cancer survivors “trained to provide empathetic counseling to men and women who are experiencing cancer diagnosis and treatment.”

NALLIANCE has served adults with developmental disabilities for decades, yet the organization’s presence throughout the greater Sacramento area oftentimes goes unnoticed. “A lot of people aren’t aware of [us] because our participants don’t wear name tags or T-shirts with our name on them,” explains Director of Public Relations Joanna Wilson. “We want [participants] to fit in.” INALLIANCE was founded in 1952 by a group of parents looking for a way to enhance the lives of their children with developmental disabilities. What began as a day 28 stylemg.com - October 2013

program has grown to include Supported Employment and Work and Life Skills programs. Today, INALLIANCE serves more than 400 people throughout eight counties, including El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Sutter. Participants are placed in jobs at local businesses whenever possible, and those who can’t find paid positions donate their time to other local nonprofits. “Our clients…want to contribute to society by working just like everyone else,” says Director of Business Development Jennifer Reuther Casey. “Instead of wasting the human capital of people with disabilities,

we help businesses successfully employ them. Businesses reap all kinds of benefits, from tax credits to retention savings and improved morale.” According to Wilson, the organization’s largest program is Community Training, which provides participants with individualized support as they navigate job sites, college classes and community inclusion activities. “Seeing our participants in our offices really drives home the fact that we are doing great work to help folks who need extra support to live and work the same way you and I do,” she says. Employment Training Specialist Rebekah Scher joined INALLIANCE last year and puts treating clients with “honor and respect” at the top of her list of responsibilities. “We believe that all people are capable of attaining personal greatness and that dreams can be realized,” she says. “Each person was created to live a purposeful and beautiful life. As such, we aim to operate with that in the forefront of our minds.” Joseph Siano works with Scher as a member of the Supported Employment program. He became involved with INALLIANCE in 2005 and says the organization’s mission is to be supportive and keep participants like him at the top of their game. “I really like INALLIANCE. I have jobs that I like to work at. I make money and get to do things that make me happy,” he shares. “I am learning how to speak up for myself.” The newest addition to the INALLIANCE family of programs is comprehensive Elder Care, which offers services like homemaking assistance, paramedical and wellness care, assistive technology support, and legal and financial services. “As we began to look at diversification, senior care fit very well with what we do for people with developmental disabilities,” explains Executive Director Diana DeRodeff. “We like to see people thrive in their own homes, not just exist.” “I have learned so much about the indomitable human spirit; how much beauty can be contained in places most don’t care to look,” adds Scher. “I have seen miraculous transformations when people have simply been allowed to be themselves and fight for their dreams.”

hen is it OK to let Timmy start kindergarten and Susie to swipe on lip gloss? Folsom’s Mosaic Therapy and Wellness team— Britney Stone, MA, LMFT, and Mandi Baughman, MA, ATR, MFTi (both referenced here as “Mosaic”)—shed light on your child’s critical “firsts.”

POTTY TRAINING Expect biological readiness between 18 months to three years old, depending on one’s physical and developmental factors, as well as familial and cultural approaches. Look for an expression of interest and, recommends Mosaic, an “awareness of biological cues and the ability to get to and

from the bathroom.” And treat this time as an opportunity to build your child’s confidence. But, add the therapists, “If you find that your child is becoming angry, defiant, withdrawn or showing other concerning behaviors, step back…[he or she] may be feeling too much pressure and frustration, which can backfire. Also, accidents are norOctober 2013 - stylemg.com 31

ourkids STARTING KINDERGARTEN Five years old is still considered the norm for entering kindergarten. If unsure about your child’s classroom preparedness, consult with preschool or daycare staff, or mimic a school setting and classroom structure at home to help prepare your little one. “Overall, children in kindergarten should be willing and able to follow instructions, interact with other children, have motor skills to complete classroom activities and possess verbal skills,” explains Mosaic, noting that not all kids accomplish these skills before or during their kindergarten year. “Build socialization and developmental skills through praise, modeling and encouragement.” Conversely, consider waiting if your child displays unsafe or disruptive behaviors, like aggression or excessive tantrumming.

SLEEPOVERS The kindergarten years are not uncommon for a sleepover, but neither is the 8-13 yearsold range; it’s somewhat subjective to one’s comfort level. “Sleeping over should require your child to assertively communicate so they can ask an adult to call home, ask for help and demonstrate healthy boundaries for safety reasons,” explains Mosaic, stressing the importance of knowing and trusting other parents. “It is crucial to be aware of who will be supervising the children, what activities will be allowed, etc.” And although children will likely exhibit excitement at the prospect of a sleepover, they may get nervous as the big bunking moment approaches. Do your best to normalize anxious feelings while ensuring the supervisory home is safe.

GETTING A CELL PHONE Early-age cell phone use is not uncommon, but Mosaic believes in giving kids regular cell phones, not smartphones, to limit Internet use and delay the inevitable distraction of texting, games and social media. “Children should be able to demonstrate responsibility, trust and safety awareness prior to receiving open access to the outside world via a cell phone,” they say. “[We] recommend parents explain to their children from the start that the child’s cell phone belongs to the parent, as well as

any texts, posts, Instagrams, etc. Parents should have full reign to monitor children’s cell phone activities until they show responsibility to manage it alone, which in some cases may be well into their late teen years.”

WEARING MAKEUP Explore the interest—is it genuine or influenced by an airbrushed photo of their favorite celebrity modeling an unrealistic portrayal of perfection? When your child asks to wear cosmetics, Mosaic suggests taking the opportunity to learn more about your child’s world, including useful tidbits about her self-image and worries. Don’t ask intruding questions, but rather “carefully explore motives.” Then ask yourself if you feel comfortable with the timing and reasoning.

LEARNING TO DRIVE Discuss risks involved with driving before your teen gets behind the wheel. And because teens are more likely to establish their beliefs about driving from their parents before their first lesson, “Model good driving skills and explain why you keep a distance in front of you and your phone in the trunk,” Mosaic explains. Also, look for a good attitude about driving and safety. “Children who tend to be more impulsive and reckless may need additional time. Watch for an awareness of the fragility of life and the potential impact they make with their decisions on the road.”

Maturity, trustworthiness and problem solving skills are solid determinates for brief periods of autonomy. But, notes Mosaic, “We recommend delaying this task as late as possible. Studies show parental supervision is key in safeguarding children and teens from many risk factors and behavioral problems.” Assess your child’s comfort level, consider safety and take in the variables: how long will the child be alone, are they responsible for caring for siblings, is there a trustworthy neighbor next door, etc.

COMPUTERS Mosaic advises parents take the s a m e st a n ce with computers as they do cell phones: “It is the property of the parent. With this understanding from the start, children will be less likely to explore unsafe sites and inappropriate materials.” They do not recommend computers or iPads be left in children’s rooms unsupervised and suggest

was raised in Roseville during the ’80s and ’90s, and like most of my peers, I grew up with a seemingly innate knowledge of Danny Bunz, the famed Oakmont High School football player who went on to win two championships as a linebacker with the 49ers. Back when the Niners held their summer training camp at Sierra College, Bunz opened his eponymous Downtown Roseville sports grill, Bunz and Company, which quickly became a haven for superstars (such as Joe Montana) and fans craving a cold beer, a good burger and a game.

Our food reflected the best of what makes sports grills so appealing: comfortable, a tad nostalgic and completely satisfying— especially with a good beer or two… I clearly remember my own Roseville High School coaches frequenting the joint, including the then-assistant varsity softball coach Hank DeMello. And while Bunz was able to keep the Cincinnati Bengals at the third yard line in Super Bowl XVI, he wasn’t able to keep the restaurant, which he sold ownership of in 1999, from closing its doors in 2012. It didn’t stay closed for long, though. A group of restaurateurs, including the Roseville-born Aaron Toto, have collaborated and re-launched the institution as 2H at Bunz and Company (2H stands for second half, as in a game, or in this case, as a restaurant). Toto and his partners are smart enough n o t to m e ss too much with a good thing. My 2H Chicken Wings dining partner and I visited the restaurant recently, and were pleased to see 62 stylemg.com - October 2013

New York Steak Sandwich

2H at Bunz and Company A Winning Legacy by Kelly Soderlund Photography by Dante Fontana that not much has changed, although the aesthetic has been updated and the menu modernized to include offerings such as street tacos. Our meal started off with zucchini slices, lightly dusted with breadcrumbs and fried to golden perfection. One word: yummy. For entrées, we settled upon a Chinese chicken salad and a New York steak sandwich, served on a French roll with their special 2H sauce. Our food reflected the best of what makes sports grills so appealing: comfortable, a tad nostalgic and completely satisfying—especially with a good beer or two (2H boasts 14 on tap), accompanied by a good game on television amongst friends. It’s reassuring to know we Rosevillians won’t let a good thing die.

by Chef Andrew George Jr. (Arsenal Pulp Press, Nov. 2013, $21.95) Rabbit Roulade • 6 boneless rabbit legs (or chicken) • 2 tbsp. each chopped fresh sage, thyme, and oregano • Salt, to taste • Ground black pepper, to taste • 1⁄2 cup sage hazelnut pesto (recipe follows) • 2 cups baby dandelion greens or baby arugula • 3 tbsp. olive oil

Sage Hazelnut Pesto • 2 cups fresh sage leaves, stems removed • 1 tbsp. chopped garlic • 2 tsp. lemon juice • 1 tsp. lemon zest • 1⁄4 cup toasted pine nuts or 1⁄2 cup toasted hazelnuts • 1⁄3 cup olive oil • 1⁄2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese salt, to taste • Ground black pepper, to taste For the pesto: In a food process or blender, process sage, garlic, lemon juice and zest, and pine nuts until a paste forms. Add oil and cheese and process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. If not using right away, store in refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 6 months in ice cube trays or small portion containers. Makes 2 cups For the roulade: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place rabbit legs into an oiled plastic bag, and pound to a 1⁄4-in (6-mm) thickness with a mallet. Remove legs from bag. Season with fresh herbs, salt and pepper. Spread pesto evenly across each leg. Brown rabbit on each side, until golden. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing. For the glaze: In a large saucepan, bring sugar and raspberry vinegar to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until reduced by half. Add raspberry preserves and fresh raspberries and let simmer for another 1–2 minutes. Pour over slices of roulade before serving.

JADE MOUNTAIN 2010 CABERNET SAUVIGNON Utilizing multiple appellations and blending them together, Jade Mountain produces wines with great flavor and exceptional quality. The winemaker, Domenica Totty, is very well known and respected in the industry. Growing up in the agricultural town of Sebastopol, CA, she’d watch as nearby apple orchards were gradually replanted to vineyards. Between her 10-plus years of winemaking experience and her work using varietals from all over California, she’s the perfect fit for Jade Mountain. Jade Mountain 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon combines fruit from both Napa and Lake Counties, resulting in aromas that feature classic Napa characteristics (ripe blackberry, dark chocolate, violets and mocha). With a bright entry, the palate picks up red cherry and blueberry tones, punctuated by vanilla and cocoa; firm tannins hold the flavors through the finish. In the $15 range, this wine is a fan favorite—not over the top, but full-bodied enough to serve with hearty food (like this month’s Raspberry-Glazed Rabbit Roulade). —Richard Righton Owner, 36 Handles and Relish Burger Bar

Bellissima Boutique 916-741-7602 facebook.com/bellissimarocklin

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? I believe that successful decorating comes from creating an artful mix of things people love. The Art of Interior Placement creates beauty, comfort, elegance and functionality using a client’s existing décor, and they get to enjoy the results that very evening. Some of the homeowner’s stress is removed by reinventing, renewing and rearranging what they already have, ensuring it’s always the client’s taste…with a designer’s touch. An assessment of my client’s lifestyle is made prior to the redesign with regard to what they don’t like about the space, how they want it to function, and their vision for the room. To effectively redesign, the contents of the room are removed to reveal the architecture of the space and natural focal points. Then, with a proven placement formula, the room is beautifully transformed, often with items found in other areas of the home. I believe interior redesign found me, because as a young child it was always very natural for me to be moving the furniture and rearranging accessories. How are you involved with both the community and your customers? I volunteer at Habitat for Humanity ReStore and enjoy pulling together donated furnishings and accessories in their showroom, so customers can envision them in their own homes. It’s a great place to purchase all sorts of treasures and it helps their mission to build homes for worthy individuals. It’s always exciting to reveal the “after” room when a redesign is complete. Some are speechless, some cry with joy, but they are amazed at how much more inviting their rooms are; most don’t even buy anything new. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Beyond having a successful redesign business and redesigning homes on HGTV’s Decorating Cents, I’m proud to have taught more than 250 adult students how to develop a successful interior redesign and staging business, and see them thrive in the industry.

Describe your business. Bellissima Boutique is an accessories and jewelry boutique. We offer fashion jewelry that is locally made and often designer inspired. We will be offering contemporary women’s clothing in the coming months and are currently featuring Rock Revival denim. All of our fashion jewelry and accessories are $25 and under. We have the perfect mix of high-end clothing and budget-friendly accessories! We also have little ladies hair accessories from Little Birdee Boutique. Where do you go when the going gets tough? We’re heavily involved in our church. We were raised with solid beliefs that have anchored us and gotten us through both the highs and lows of life, and love and business! What’s your biggest job perk? The biggest job perk we have is meeting such great people. The ability to connect with our customers on a daily basis is something we love and don’t take for granted! What’s your favorite local business other than your own? We enjoy going to Bloom Coffee & Tea. Their coffee and brunch items are so tasty, and it’s a great place to go and just relax. And finally, customer service is...? Customer service is a total experience. It is a feeling our customers get when they walk in and are greeted with a warm welcome by our staff, and hear the sounds of good music playing in the background. They discover the unique product offerings we have. It’s the simple touches like walking our customer’s bag around the counter and handing it to them combined with our great finds, competitive pricing and the exclusivity of our customer’s purchases (we only order three or less of any given item).

Carlos Rodriguez

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? My business is in medicine (the best kind): laughter. I have been responsible for it since I can speak. Next week, I’m going to the Medical Board of California where they’ll award comics with a PhD in inner well-being; this time next week I’ll be Dr. Rodriguez. What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? The first time I hit a stage was an open mic night at Old Ironsides in Sacramento. I was 16, and my continuation high school teacher snuck me in. I bombed so badly, but learned that people will laugh because you’re funny and people will laugh just to shut you up. You have to figure out which one you are getting. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? For me, my biggest accomplishments (since doing stand-up) are helping in areas I wouldn’t be able to otherwise. I have been asked to help with numerous benefits (cancer, memorial, awareness) and fundraisers. Recently I was asked to go to Japan and entertain the troops—now that’s cool. Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? Adam Sandler—he makes horrible movies that make a ton of money and is still regarded as funny. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Thunder Valley Casino Resort’s buffet—what else goes better with shrimp than soft serve and macaroni and cheese? Where do you and your family go locally to have fun? The movies! I love the movies. The Tower Theater is my favorite—it turns every movie into a film, if you know what I mean.

Do you know that our editorial is not paid for, nor can it be purchased? In fact, our Introducing and Dine reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

Describe your business. Olympic Foot and Ankle – Dr. Annalisa Y. Co provides complete care of the foot, ankle and lower leg. I offer an integrative medical practice and adhere to both Eastern and Western medicinal philosophies to achieve lower extremity wellness for all of my patients. I believe I provide patients with a unique experience, compared to the larger practices in the area. I keep my total patient panel small, so patients spend less time in the waiting room and more quality time with me. I have a strong passion for sports and dance medicine, and as a marathon runner, cyclist, yogini and dancer, believe that I relate particularly well to athletes and dancers; I understand when they’re frustrated with injuries and chronic problems and want nothing more than to get back to their usual, active lifestyle. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Dr. Annalisa Y. Co I’m most proud of opening Olympic Foot and Ankle – Dr. Annalisa Y. Co. forget me not Alzheimer’s Hits Home by Tom Mailey

M

82 stylemg.com - October 2013

But still, we were concerned. We wanted to move her to an assisted care facility, but she was still fiercely independent. “I’m a tough old bird,” she reminded us frequently. The one time she actually agreed, she lasted one night. My sister got a call the next morning from the facility supervisor: Mom had called a moving company. We realized that for as long as possible, her home was the best place. It was familiar. She was alone, but she was happy. After the funeral, we cleaned out her room. Much of the stuff we’d seen before, but we were surprised to discover something else. Mom had a lifelong love of writing, but we thought she gave it up when macular degeneration made it too difficult for her to see. However, in a relatively new spiral notebook, we found poems. Not many, but enough to tell us that in her solitude, another light still burned brightly. “She scrubbed She cooked She laundered She raised four children... She laundered everything She went to church, and so did her family She loved good music She loved good comedy She loved to swim She was lucky And unlucky She was happy She knew sadness

She would’ve liked to attend college So many years So many smiles Friendships —And a few non-friendships (Hey, isn’t that what life is all about?) And hoping Most of all That whoever reads this Will remember that I tried in so many ways to care for my family”

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s is not easy, but in the coming decades, it looms. The World Health Organization calls Alzheimer’s a “public health priority,” with U.S. cost projections as high as $215 billion annually—more than heart disease or cancer, combined. October is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. If you have a loved one facing it, you’re facing it too. Resources are available. Find out more at alz.org/norcal. In the meantime, stay focused on those lights that still burn brightly. They cast warmth that can help to see you through.

y mom would have turned 89 this year. When Patricia Mailey (maiden name, Powell) was born, cars came with hand cranks. She saw a lot: the depression, a world war, and the rise of Justin Bieber. A few years back she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but as she struggled to remember what year it was or forgot to take her medication, some things remained constant, like her sharp sense of humor. I called her one Saturday morning last year: “Hi mom!” I said “Who is this?” She asked. I wasn’t surprised by her question, given that she mixed up my brother and me on the phone long before Alzheimer’s. I clarified: “It’s Tom!” “Oh,” she said, pausing for one perfect moment. “You still think I’m your mother, don’t you?” and then she burst into a laugh that to me always sounded like water bounding over stones. My mom passed away in May, not from Alzheimer’s but an aneurysm. The doctor said it happened very quickly, for which my family was thankful. In a way, we were thankful too that it likely spared her from further fading into Alzheimer’s hazy abyss, for which there is no cure and little treatment. It’s a strange thing, Alzheimer’s. Imagine the brain like a string of lights that suddenly begin flickering. Some bulbs go out for good. Others keep burning. Some seem to burn out, but then come back on, only to dim again. There’s no pattern and little predictability. Some of my mom’s lights burned bright as ever, like that sense of humor and her long-term memory. But others—shortterm memory, simple reasoning—were either out completely or flickered randomly. As time went on, more lights blinked out and never came back on. Dad died in 2006 and Mom lived alone. She was well looked after by my sister and niece, who lived near her. Another sister, my brother and I visited as often as we could.
