laying favorites is usually not my game—but this month it’s inescapable. This issue, featuring Style’s ever-popular Readers’ Choice Awards, is one of our biggest and best of the year (see, I can’t help myself). It’s time to pay homage to the winners throughout our community who you, Style readers, so loudly cheered for and elected as your “favorites” for this passing year. From favorite seafood restaurant and favorite local artist to favorite local event and favorite place for a facial, we’ve got the scoop with who’s who across the region. Also, be sure to check out some new categories (and new winners) as our local community grows and flourishes. And the favoritism doesn’t stop there. In this month’s FYI, “The 10 Spot” features some of Style’s favorite ways to celebrate Halloween locally. There are “spooktaculars,” haunted houses and festivities galore—all promising howling good ways to spend the late-month autumn nights. For more seasonal fun, check out Local Matters for the October “Hit List,” featuring our favorite pumpkin-inspired foods found at purveyors across town. In Health & Wellness, find a myriad of area professionals’ favorite essential oils that not only smell great, but also render life-changing benefits to several common health ailments. Who knew lavender could be useful in combating hair loss? On the topic of satisfying smells, check out Style’s favorite (and timely) casserole in Taste—Chicken, Sweet Potato and Bacon—from new cookbook Sunday Casseroles by Betty Rosbottom (Chronicle Books, 2014), to be devoured alongside intermittent swigs of one of our favorite beers: Oskar Blues Brewery Old Chub Nitro Scotch Ale. While you’re in the kitchen, take a look down at one of your most trampled floors in the house. Is it time for a makeover? As we head toward the holidays, it might be perfect timing for revamping the look and flow of your home before guests start flocking. Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID, gives her favorite selections for new styles and innovations in floor coverings in Home Design. Concrete is so cool (literally and figuratively) and is very popular at the moment. I love this look with rich pops of color and strategically placed area rugs. But before you spend all your money on home remodeling, it’s worth a thousand mentions of October’s designation as National Breast Cancer Awareness month. In honor, head over a few pages to Click where we give you the directions to find Style’s favorite local and national products and services, that when purchased, give back to the cause. Now it’s my favorite time: time to get on a plane to enjoy the Caribbean waters of the Dominican Republic. Look for a recap of my “escape” in the coming months! Until next time, enjoy all your favorites…and maybe FOLLOW US ONLINE: even find a few new ones! — Desiree

Q&A Q: What advice would you give to your younger self? A: Embrace the moment when it happens, as it only happens once; spend more time with your grandparents. Q: What comes to you naturally? A: I have a pretty good creative streak that allows me to problemsolve fairly well. Q: Biggest life inspirations? A: Certainly my parents are the genesis of any dreams that I ever had for myself early on, but these days, my wife and four children inspire everything I do.

en Morton, Jr. grew up as no stranger to the world of golf. His father worked his way up the ranks at Haggin Oaks Golf Course (starting as a golf club repairman in 1958), and would often take his young son to the course—teaching him the ropes of what would soon become the family business. Although Morton became an accomplished golfer in his own right, he never had any doubt that his niche was on the retail side of the green. While still in college, he spent nights and weekends traveling up and down Northern California, managing sales for five regional courses, including Haggin Oaks. He’s now Haggin Oaks’ Director of Retail and Marketing, and has almost lost count of how many cousins and other relatives have been brought into the fold. Even so, Morton and his family aspire 10 stylergbr.com - October 2014

to never lose sight of the larger family that makes up their local community. For over seven years, Morton was a volunteer firefighter for the Rocklin Fire Department, and he’s now the secretary for the Morton Golf Foundation (mortonfoundation. org)—an organization that provides scholarships and funds golf programs for youth, the disabled and underprivileged groups. His favorite foundation activity is the annual “Golf and Guitars” concert and golf tournament (takes place in May), which brings country music artists from across the nation together to raise funds for charity. “My job is about more than putting food on the table,” Morton shares. “It’s about making a long-lasting impact on the greater community, and I’m just getting started.” — Amber Foster

Q: Best words of wisdom you’ve received? A: Slow down. My father and my golf teacher stressed it when I was a kid, and it makes just as much sense with the rest of my life today.

ask the expert Q:

What does the term “extra virgin” refer to on olive oil bottle lables?

A:

Unfortunately, olive oil is one of the top five fraudulently labeled foods in the U.S. because it’s not regulated. When buying any olive oil—extra virgin or otherwise—always check the label for the “crush date,” not the sell-by date, as to ensure freshness. With many specialty olive oil companies, the crush dates and chemistry of how the oil was made is posted on the label. When a label states that the olive oil is “extra virgin,” it means the oil is pure—not processed with added heat or cut with other, cheaper oils. It should not have any defects and be produced sans solvents. Again, checking the label is absolutely imperative when buying olive oil. —Deb Manley, Owner Pairings 701 Pleasant Grove Boulevard Suite 180, Roseville 916-772-7247, pairingsevoo.com

What’s in Season: Apples

When it comes to fruit, none has quite the colorful history as that of a juicy apple. Some believe it was an apple that tempted Adam in the Garden of Eden; others are more familiar with the fable of Johnny Appleseed walking across the U.S. for thousands of miles, barefoot, planting apple trees. Whether you believe these stories or not, you might want to pay attention to the adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” as recent research about the nutritional benefits of this famed fruit prove the common expression may just be true.

SELECTION AND STORAGE

DID YOU KNOW?

Whether you prefer biting into the Granny Smith, Empire, Arkansas Black, Gala, Gravenstein, Winesap or Golden Delicious varieties, all apples can be stored longer than most fruits, sometimes up to several months. To help keep their nutrients at optimal levels, it’s best to store them at low refrigerator temperatures in the fruit drawer (with a damp cheesecloth). While in the refrigerator, make certain to remove apples that are brown or damaged, as they can release high amounts of ethylene gas and cause harm to surrounding apples.

Apples not only help regulate blood sugar, but they also lower blood fat and significantly alter the bacteria in our digestive tracts. Eating an apple in its solid, natural form, as opposed to consuming applesauce or apple juice, delivers the most health benefits. Preliminary research shows apples may have the ability to reduce the risk of lung cancer and asthma, due to their strong antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits. Whether tart and crunchy or sweet and soft, there are many ways to enjoy the fruit’s fresh flavors—from fruit and green salads to pairing it with cheeses or pork (for a recipe to make Pan-Roasted Pork with Apples and Thyme, visit stylergbr.com).

FOR TIPS ON HOW TO PAIR WITH WINE AND THE RECIPE TO MAKE PAN-ROASTED PORK WITH APPLES AND THYME, VISIT STYLERGBR.COM. — Susan Belknap For details on where to buy Placer County farm-fresh produce, wine, meat and local products, visit placergrown.org. 12 stylergbr.com - October 2014

Parker’s Hot Dogs of Santa Cruz he nation may know Parker’s Hot Dogs of Santa Cruz as the spot where Adam Richman from Man vs. Food attempted to eat five pounds of chili dogs, but to locals it’s the place that serves the best hot dogs in town. I recently visited the eatery for a Chicago Dog and Vanilla Cream Soda. Parker’s interior boasts beach-town memorabilia peppered along the walls and furniture, reminding patrons of their original Santa Cruz location. A small bar to the side of the register is a great nook for lunchtime customers to post up; for those dining with a group, there are booths lining the walls. I sat at the bar and watched as numerous franks boiled right in front of my eyes. Soon, mine arrived steaming and dressed with mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, pickles and celery salt. I quickly dug in and was blown away by the 100-percent beef dog’s snappy casing and the quality of the accompanying condiments. In less than 10 minutes it disappeared, and I rested assured that Parker’s does indeed serve the hottest dogs in town. The lives we touch inspire us Ollie and Vernie’s bond has endured through 60 years of marriage and military service in two wars. They still never go to bed angry. So when Ollie was diagnosed with memory problems that can progress to Alzheimer’s disease, they resolved to meet the challenge together. Doctors recommended physical and mental activity to support brain health – so 81-year-old Ollie now plays on three softball teams. The couple fill their social calendar with friends and charity fundraisers. They also fight back by helping others at risk of dementia. Participating in a multiyear study at the UC Davis Alzheimer’s Center, the couple is helping leading researchers investigate the aging brain to find improved methods of diagnosis and treatment. EJ: Oddly enough, I love almost every piece; each is so meaningful to me with the feeling it evokes. What I feel in the painting may not be what you, the viewer, feel, but some kind of emotion is what I’m looking for. Not all art is beautiful like a luscious flower, but if you experience some kind of feeling then I have done my job. You may not even like it and that’s OK.

EJ: My inspiration comes from my inner feelings and dream work that’s connected to my family or myself. All of my work comes from my unconscious. avender, rose, sandalwood…sure, they smell amazing, but did you know these essential oils reap healing powers? Kathleen Bailey, who has been teaching classes on aromatherapy and essential oils for 16 years in the Sacramento area, explains that “essential oils date back to ancient times...For many centuries, essential oils and other aromatics were used for religious rituals, the treatment of illness, and other physical and spiritual needs.” Despite the fact that this form of healing is rapidly growing in popularity, many still don’t realize that life-changing benefits could be just an oil away.

Other benefits include: promoting healthy skin, relieving rash and skin irritation, stimulating mental focus and energy, improving respiratory health, and relieving discomfort in joints and muscles. For example, peppermint (mentha piperita) can be used for respiratory infections, headaches and nausea; while lavender (lavendula agustafolia) is great for skin conditions, burns, hair loss, insomnia and nervous tension; and lemon (citrus limon) can improve microcirculation, increase white blood cells and improve memory.

hen the parents of today were headstrong teens, few were anticipating technology’s global takeover. Most parents struggle with finding a happy, healthy medium when it comes to teenagers and technology. It is, after all, something of a high-wire act—one with no net and a long way to fall. So, where to draw that murky line in the sand? Here, a local high school teacher, mother and student try to find the balance. “When my kids first got cell phones, they were obsessed; they never put them down,” admits an El Dorado Hills mom with two daughters—one still in high school. “But like anything, they became more of a novelty and, though they still use them, they were on to the next thing.” While technology is hardly a fad (not like, say, skinny jeans) there always seems to be another new social media site or gadget competing for our teens’ fickle attention. So in this case, rather than ban all devices from the house, Mom set fair rules around its use—in other words, apps are awesome, but family comes first. Or, as she puts it, “No technology during meals or family time.” From an educational point of view, technology has clear advantages for teens: a broader research base and computer skills they can later apply in college and the workforce, for starters.

October 2014 - stylergbr.com 27

ourkids HOW ONE LOCAL TEEN FINDS HER BALANCE At age 12, Alyssa Wong, 2014 Oak Ridge High School graduate, got a cell phone and started using computers for more than just school projects. Today, when asked to tally her average tech use, the 18-year-old offers, “Maybe 14 hours a day? I’m on my iPhone constantly; it’s practically attached to me at this point.” I also watch TV a lot during the summer when I’m not working.” Alas, work. A sideline. Something else to do. With so much at a click, Wong, a frequent video chatter, places

Technology has also proved to be an asset to her in school. Having a phone with Internet, Wong explains, allows for fast access to information should she need to retrieve stats on the latest economic policies or correctly conjugate a verb. On the flip side, Wong says, “You lose out on a lot of chances to have real, face-toface conversations. A huge percentage of my generation doesn’t have basic conversation skills because they rely on their phones too much; instead of talking in person, they hide behind a phone or laptop.” Wong’s parents embraced technology by helping her navigate the computer world. She, in turn, helped them become more cell phone savvy and now uses technology broadly, but in conjunction with the one thing predating even the most rudimentary forms of communication: her noggin. “Nowadays it is harder to have that balance because technology is used in every aspect of our lives,” she admits. “I think for me, when I’m with people, I know not to use any phones or anything, and that’s my balance.”

28 stylergbr.com - October 2014

Despite this, notes a teacher at Ponderosa High School, “some of the many benefits also can negatively impact students.” Academically, ramifications range from illegible handwriting to significantly poor spelling skills. More concerning, he adds, “I’ve noticed young adults do not appear to be as capable of managing themselves in a formal conversation nearly as well as they used to. Conversing is a learned skill, something they seem to have lost with all the texting, instant messaging, Facebooking, etc.” He also cites distraction and an inability to cope without technology as issues. “I have personally witnessed students fall apart over the loss of a phone, which should be considered a convenience rather than life support.” But, as technology is here to stay, parents and educators alike are embracing it as a key learning tool when used appropriately, whether that means installing a password protected Internet connection or limiting access to certain websites and related strategies. Most crucially, suggests both the EDH mom

and Pondo teacher, is to cultivate, encourage, and support teens’ outside interests, too. Crucial to the equation is parents’ own digital doings. When was the last time you were caught tech-tasking at the table, Mom? And Dad, do you have to check the scores during Uno? Model quiet time and not only will your kids see it’s possible to engage in tech-free activities and have fun, but you might e ve n r e m e m b e r how much you once liked it. Welcome your teens’ participation or curiosity if offered. If not, take heart knowing that your parental example is teaching them how to connect in ways beyond the digital realm. As for your teens’ technology habits, if their use is responsible and constructive, leverage it to bring your family together. Find a community volunteer project for your tribe, then enlist your teen to Instagram their benevolence. Lastly, consider setting out for a remote, cellphone-free zone that allows teens to connect with their innate sense of discovery—and the wider world.

hird-generation Lincoln resident Primo Santini says he’s always appreciated South Placer County’s rural attributes. Through the years, his experiences as a local business owner and City Council member have exposed him to both the positive and negative effects of expansion within a small town. “Life is about balance, and unbridled growth can degrade the very thing that drives the growth to begin with—the livability of an area,” he explains. “There is something about integrating open space into communities that invigorates them and quiets them at the same time. It absolutely makes them more livable.” Santini does his part to maintain that delicate balance by serving on the board of the Wildlife Heritage Foundation (WHF), an accredited, non-profit land trust dedicated to protecting, enhancing and restoring open L-R: Ian Hoover, Amber Parmenter and Stella Wong spaces and their inhabitants throughout California. eautiful floor coverings can truly transform a room, but they can also be one of your biggest expenses, so planning ahead is essential. Before deciding on materials, colors and textures, consider some design basics. Using a single type of flooring throughout most of your home, breaking it only at bedrooms and wet areas, will create the biggest impact. Check out the following materials to see what suits your style.

WOOD Beautiful but tough, wood is a warmer and more forgiving material than tile. There are two kinds of wood floors: solid wood and engineered wood. Both are eco-friendly options when certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and come in different widths and finishes to create your unique aesthetic. Another option is to choose floors salvaged from older buildings or milled from salvaged posts and beams.

and poured concrete can be tinted, stained or etched to mimic stone or tile; what’s more, it can have pieces of stone, wood or glass mixed in or embedded into it for a one-of-a-kind look. Keep in mind that it’s an extremely hard surface so it’ll be noisy and fragile items dropped on it will probably break; you’ll also need to seal it regularly. Consider pairing concrete with a radiant heating surface.

CARPET AND AREA RUGS For versatility and durability, there’s nothing better than tile. It can be used in any room and with any design, and comes in a wide range of colors, textures, finishes and prices. Tile is universally appealing, sustainable and easy to maintain. Natural stone tile includes limestone, slate, soapstone, marble and granite. Stone is subject to weathering and aging, which many people prefer; what’s more, natural stone develops a patina over time that is unique to the traffic patterns of the space. Just as for linen fabric and wood cabinetry, the natural look and wear only adds to the product’s beauty.

LAMINATE Laminate flooring is a photograph of another surface that is adhered to a base and then sealed. Inexpensive, resilient and easy to install, laminate is popular with do-ityourselfers. The higher-end products are more resistant to damage and will last longer. Adding an underlayment will absorb sound and make the flooring sound less hollow when walked on. Unlike wood, laminate cannot be refinished.

CONCRETE Concrete is one of the most popular flooring choices today. It’s extremely durable,

Carpet provides the most warmth and comfort of any floor covering, and today’s technologies have created an even greater variety of textures, colors and cuts. Carpets made of woven plants and grasses, such as sisal, are now much more versatile. A beautiful rug can be a room’s focal point and make it feel cozy, especially over concrete, tile or stone floors. Area rugs can also be the centerpiece of a room, used to define one specific area within a room, or placed over an existing carpet to create added dimension. A well-chosen floor rug placed in the right spot will enhance anything you can dream up.

which were carried on large skewers and cut tableside. They offer 15 different types of meat—from succulent filet mignon and juicy Parmesan-dusted chicken to rich Brazilian sausage, pork tenderloin, lamb and pork ribs.

What they refer to as a “salad” bar, is really more like an ‘everything that isn’t just meat’ bar. The perfectly cooked meat is worthy of the fanfare and dramatic presentation, but even the side dishes brought quietly by our waitress were worthy of spotlight. The pao de queijo (cheesy bread) was definitely an underrated star. Odd as it may sound, the texture was half the fun of eating the mini rolls. They reminded me of crispy gnoc-

espite being ignorant of Brazilian steakhouse etiquette, I found myself resting easy after stepping into Flame and Fire (an electronic fire display playfully references the name) with my husband. We were given a quick tutorial on the “language” of the steak house, which goes something like this: Salad bar is over there; servers will come by the tables with meat. Flip this token to the green side and they’ll bring you some; the red side means no more for now. And men the world over swooned. What they refer to as a “salad” bar, is really more like an “everything that isn’t just meat” bar. At Flame and Fire that means 35 different salads (think chicken salad, pasta salad and mixed greens to name a few), gourmet cheeses, scrumptious rice, feijoada (rich beans simmered with pork) and farofa (a tasty topping to the comfort dish). Once settled, we flipped our tokens to green and were awash in poised servers explaining their offerings,

chi, and tasted like starchy, savory, doughy heaven. If, by some minor miracle, you happen to have room for dessert, the signature ice cream—served with a spicy pepper and piquant apricot-and-peach jelly—is a singularly entertaining (albeit slightly odd) dish. Flame and Fire is sure to be a hot spot for those looking for well-executed experiential dining. And don’t be surprised if you bump into me sneaking some of those cheesy rolls into my purse—once you try them, you’ll understand.

taste CHICKEN, SWEET POTATO AND BACON CASSEROLE Sunday Casseroles by Betty Rosbottom (Chronicle Books, 2014, $24.95)

Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees. Generously butter a 9-by-13-inch or another shallow 3-quart baking dish. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Place a chicken breast on a work surface and, with a sharp knife held parallel with the surface, cut the breast in half horizontally. Repeat with the remaining breasts. You will have 8 chicken pieces. In a small bowl, mix together the thyme, sage, 1 teaspoon of salt and the pepper. Set aside 1 teaspoon of this seasoning. Season both sides of each piece of the chicken with the remaining mixture. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut into 1/4-inch-thick rounds. Stack several rounds on top of each other and cut into 1/4-inch-wide strips. Peel the onion, halve through the root end, and slice into 1/4-inchwide strips. Heat 3 tablespoons of the olive oil until hot in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the chicken breasts and

dinner date Food and Beer for the Season sauté until lightly browned, 2-3 minutes per side. Transfer the chicken to the prepared baking dish. Add the chicken broth and wine to the pan and whisk to scrape up any browned bits on the bottom. Cook, stirring, until the liquid has reduced to 1/4 cup, 3-4 minutes. Pour over the chicken breasts. In the same frying pan set over medium heat, fry the bacon until crisp, 4-5 minutes. Drain on paper towels and, when cool, chop coarsely. Discard all but 1 tablespoon of the drippings in the pan and add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Set the frying pan over medium heat, and when hot, add the sweet potatoes and onion and sauté, stirring, until softened, 7-8 minutes. Season the vegetables with salt and spoon them over the chicken. Sprinkle with the bacon. Melt the butter until hot in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the milk and the reserved 1-teaspoon of seasoning. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, whisking constantly, and cook until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 3 minutes. Taste the sauce and season with salt if needed. Drizzle the sauce over the ingredients in the casserole and sprinkle with the Gruyère. Cover the casserole loosely with a sheet of foil. Bake the casserole until the chicken is cooked through and tender, about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. If desired, garnish the center of the dish with some sage and thyme sprigs before serving. Serves 4.

OSKAR BLUES BREWERY OLD CHUB NITRO SCOTCH ALE Oskar Blues is known as the “original craft brewery in a can”—a trend that seems to be sweeping the craft beer scene as of late, due to the fact that cans keep beer fresher for longer by eliminating the damaging effects of light and oxygen while being infinitely recyclable and portable. The Colorado-based brewery is known for packing huge, hoppy flavors into these small aluminum cans, and Old Chub Nitro—which comes in at 6.9 percent alcohol-by-volume—is no different. The super smoky and malty ale boasts flavors of semisweet cocoa and coffee, plus light hints of beechwood. The “nitro” refers to the addition of nitrogen gas to the carbonation process, which produces smaller bubbles than CO2 and causes them to react with, and displace each other—creating the signature “cascade” when opened and contributing to the thick, creamy mouth feel. This month’s rich Chicken, Sweet Potato and Bacon Casserole is a perfect complement to the bold, full-bodied beer, and the sweet finish goes perfectly with the starchy, innate caramel flavors of the sweet potato. —Heather Zamarripa, Executive Chef, 36 Handles Pub & Eatery

SWEET SPOT SKINCARE (located inside Minx Salon and Spa) 6060 Horseshoe Bar Road Loomis 916-259-1515 facebook.com/sweetspotskincare

Jenn Hooker

Describe your business. I’m an esthetician located inside Minx Salon and Spa. I provide skin care treatments such as facials, waxing, makeup and “sugaring”—an all-natural form of hair removal. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Being a mom of two boys, ages eight and 10, a wife, and getting to fulfill my dream of becoming an esthetician. What’s your biggest job perk? Coming into a salon every day that I’m lucky enough to work in—a place where everyone always has a smile on their faces and loves their job as much as I do. I get to create a relaxing, tranquil place for my clients so they can truly unwind and let me pamper them. Seeing people refreshed and rejuvenated at the end is the most rewarding feeling. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? My family and I love eating at The Sandwich Spot. They make the most amazing sandwiches and have the best customer service; they really make you feel like family when you walk through the door. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Top It Off Frozen Yogurt. We go there quite often, maybe too often! Our boys love getting to run around outside in the grassy area while we sit in the sun and relax. When my girlfriends want to catch up, it’s our go-to spot. And finally, customer service is…? Going back to the basics—a smile and saying “hi” to each person; exceeding their expectations by showing that you’re really listening to what they’re saying; being very attentive; and doing what they’re asking with a smile, not just because you have to but because you want to.

Do you know that our editorial is not paid for, nor can it be purchased? In fact, our Introducing and Dine reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? McCoy Fatula, LLP focuses on family law and civil litigation, with a boutique practice area in wine law. The practice area found us. We never set out to be family law attorneys, but after a prior experience, we realized there was a lot of opportunity to help people out, especially children, through family law. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? We are members and/or sponsors of many local organizations dedicated to giving back. This past holiday season we started our first toy drive through a local chapter of Toys for Tots. We hosted a gourmet food tasting and “charged” one new toy; people brought many toys (we collected about 100!). We also offer a number of lowcost programs and classes to help people educate themselves on matters relating to family law. For example, the S.A.V.E. Marriages Initiative—which is our response to the ever-growing number of divorces—offers couples who are new, pre-marriage Stephen Fatula and Miles McCoy or during marriage, the chance to have a realistic conversation about the major problems leading to divorce. We also offer a single-day class, Divorce 101, to help MCCOY FATULA, LLP people who are preparing to go through a divorce. We discuss the entire process through 2270 Douglas Boulevard our four-step approach, highlighting areas that generate the most problems emotionally, Suite 200 mentally and financially. We also developed a single-day course—from a human resources Roseville perspective—to help address common problems associated with one person wearing all the 916-474-4376 hats at local businesses. We realize that when one person is required to make all decisions, mccoyfatula.com many small issues go unaddressed that ultimately become bigger problems later. And finally, customer service is…? Caring about the client, providing them the best services possible, and informing them about what’s going on. Bad news or good, clients need to know the facts of their matter. They need to know you care and that you’re not just in this business for money. It’s our firm’s culture to reply to all phone communications within 24 hours.

ghost notes Tales from a Haunted House by Tom Mailey Who can explain why ghosts are so restless In the middle of a night such as this? Why must they clatter, clamor and clang And bump into things that we miss?

Is it me coming home from another day’s work Whistling as I walk through the door? Do I disturb them by turning the TV on And cheering when my football team scores?

What makes a ghost so thoughtless, So clumsy and rude with his touch? What makes him appear at the top of the stairs And stand there without doing much?

Is it the way our furniture’s arranged, Can ghosts be obsessive compulsive? Should the chair be here, the couch over there, But they’re not so the spook finds it repulsive?

Why do they move things on mantles When for a moment our eyes dart away? Why do they tap us with icy cold fingers Or moan everything that they say?

Or maybe they dislike what we cooked tonight, Was it something their nose couldn’t handle? Are they merely saying they don’t like the smell And someone should light a candle?

Why do they choose to sit in creaky old rockers And not recliners or a comfy new couch? And why, if they’re ghosts and don’t weigh a thing, Are their footsteps so heavy and loud?

Do they hate the station I play on the radio? Does country music send them all reeling? Are the drapes the wrong color? Or the style of fan on our ceiling? Or maybe they once saw me naked, Stepping from the tub and bending for a towel. That’d be enough for the scariest of ghouls To let out a shriek and a howl.

And if a door is open, they’ll slam it When shutting it gently would do. That’d be enough to scare me half to death Wouldn’t it be for you too?

I’m starting to think that maybe that’s it, It’s not them scaring us that’s the issue. It may be reverse—we may be their curse And that’s why sometimes ghosts will go…BOO!

Do ghosts lay awake on stormy dark nights Waiting ’til the sun again shines? What do ghosts get afraid of—please tell What sends a chill up their spine?
