R O C K L I N

Bargain hunting has been in my blood since birth. I’m not sure when, where, or why it all began, but saving money and discovering deals—whether on clothes, gas, groceries, food, or flights—has always given me a rush like no other. A big bonding moment for my husband and me was when we realized our shared passion for penny-pinching. Confession: Some of our earliest dinner dates were determined by where we could steal a deal at (the nowshuttered Fresh Choice was a favorite, since they offered 10-percent off with a AAA card). I like to say it was love at first bite. While some people might be embarrassed to pull out a BOGO coupon when a bill comes, I’ve never felt any shame. Why pay full price when you can pay half? I guess it’s no wonder then that this month’s feature, “Bargain Bites: 25+ Great Eats For $10 & Under” (page 39), is particularly near and dear to my heart. It’s proof that you can dine out—and not just at fast food establishments or ordering off kids’ menus—without going into debt. From morning till noon and into night, we have over two dozen mouthwatering dishes that will fill you up without emptying your wallet. I was honestly surprised “It is great wealth to learn about some of to a soul to live the specials and even frugally with asked our fact-checker a contented to triple check a few just mind.”—Lucretius to make sure. We also have a rundown of the happiest hours in town, because it’s always five o’ clock somewhere, right? If we missed one of your favorite dishes (and it’s under $10) or you know of a Happy Hour that’s guaranteed to put a grin on our faces, please tell me—I’d love to add it to my personal list of must-try plates. Affordable eats aside, there’s plenty more in store this month. Emily Peter shares ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Local Matters (page 14), Tara Mendanha serves up a list of local Easter brunches in The 10 Spot (page 16), and Sabrina Gonzalez presents the best “green things” available around town in Swag (page 36). As always, we highlight a notable nonprofit in Cause & Effect (page 32) and a local creative in The Arts (page 24) and provide a lengthy list of free (one of my favorite words) and charitable events in the Calendar (page 18). Whether you’re a saver or a spender, or somewhere in between, I hope that when you do pull out those bills it’s at a local business. After all, it’s the small companies that make our community so rich. Cheers! — Megan // megan@stylemg.com

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Life is short. Take advantage of every minute and devote significant attention to nurturing the important relationships in your life. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE?

Prejudicial treatment of others. BIGGEST LIFE INSPIRATIONS?

I have the extreme good fortune of working with a group of individuals who are committed to protecting our country and faithfully serving the American people. I’m inspired and humbled by their dedication at each turn. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

Being a public servant for the past 27 years has been a true honor and a privilege; I’m also incredibly grateful for the fact that I was smart enough to marry my wonderful wife many moons ago. WHAT’S NEXT?

Getting settled into life here and becoming an active member of our community.

Sean Ragan incoln resident Sean Ragan was raised by his grandparents in San Francisco, and he hardly remembers

a time when he wasn’t surrounded by public servants. His grandfather was an assistant district attorney who later became a judge, and many of his grandfather’s friends were police officers and other law enforcement officials. “Seeing my grandfather’s lifelong service in the legal system probably had an influence on me,” Ragan shares. “From the time I was about 12 years old, I knew I wanted to go into the FBI.” Ragan went on to fulfill that childhood dream. After college, he spent over five years as a police

officer in Oakland, since he knew the experience in law enforcement was a key skill he would need for his future career. He also obtained a law degree before finally joining the ranks of the FBI. Now, more than two decades with the bureau later, he is the newly appointed FBI Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Sacramento Field Office. Although new to the area, Ragan and his wife—not to mention their dog Gustav—already feel like they’ve come home. And for Ragan, the best part is the opportunity to do work he believes in. “I do what I can to protect the country,” he shares. “I can truly say I’ve never thought about a paycheck.” —Amber Foster

t may be the start of spring, but it’s also the perfect time to start planning for summer fun. The Summer Recreation Guide is available beginning March 13; if you live in Roseville, you should find a copy in your mailbox soon. Plan your swim lessons for the entire summer at any of the city’s three pools. A word to the wise: Swim lessons fill up quickly, so register early. Also, be sure to mark your calendar for the opening of the Roseville Aquatics Complex on Memorial Day weekend. It’s always great to be a kid in Roseville, but when school's out, everything is cranked up a notch with a variety of summer day camps—from archery and cooking, to engineering and babysitting. For a jampacked day of activities, check out the marquee day camps, such as Camp Roseville and Teen Scene, which feature field trips and special events, or the popular Camp Play for younger kiddos. NUTRITION // Grass-fed beef is one of the best sources of protein around and is higher in precursors for vitamins A and E and cancer-fighting antioxidants compared to grain-fed beef; it also contains more omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a powerful polyunsaturated fatty acid we get from our diets that’s been shown to fight cancer, discourage weight gain, and build muscle. Getting enough healthy fats in your diet is extremely helpful to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level, and grass-fed beef is a great source. Many people avoid beef and meat entirely because of environmental concerns, but when it comes to grass-fed beef, there’s good news: Research shows that traditional grass-based beef production and finishing actually benefit the environment by decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the biodiversity of pasture ecosystems, and improving the quality of runoff water from well-managed pastures.

SELECTION AND STORAGE // The best thing about buying beef at the farmers’ market is that you’re buying from the person who knows beef best, and if you’re in the mood to grill, they can show you the best cuts. Take the time to get to know your rancher and pre-order a specific cut of meat. Most of our local ranchers sell more than one particular meat, so you may find pork, chicken, and lamb, too! It’s good to bring a cooler along if you plan to buy meat, as it needs to be kept cold all the way home. Raw, uncooked meat generally lasts safely for around

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick's Day began as a celebration of the life of St. Patrick, one of the patron saints of Ireland. What started out as a day of prayer, family, and feast has evolved into, well, mostly just feast. Luckily, the annual celebration lands on a Saturday this year, giving you a day of recovery with no questions asked. From March 14-19, The Flower Farm will serve Irish fare from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with Irish music and a special performance from bagpiper Jason Briggs on Friday from noon to 2 p.m. The Boxing Donkey will host their annual celebration with special menu items like corned beef tacos and nachos, plus colcannon, and plenty of Guinness and green beer. Festivities start at 6 a.m. on March 17; live music will run from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the cover charge is $10. Celebrate at The Monk's Cellar from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. with an Irish food menu, live music, giveaways and, of course, their delicious Irish red ale. For a night of fun and giving back, head to Whitney Oaks Golf Club from 5-10 p.m. as the Kiwanis Club of Rocklin Foundation hosts their annual St. Patrick's Day Live Auction and Dinner, where auction proceeds benefit the children of Rocklin and Loomis schools. —Emily Peter For more information, visit flowerfarminn.com, theboxingdonkey.com, monkscellar. com, and rocklinkiwanis.org.

THE TEN TENORS

“Their sound, though, is what’s truly sexy. The cluster of high voices generates pure electricity” – Los Angeles Times

WISH YOU WERE HERE TUE–WED MAR 13–14

The TEN Tenors return with their new show Wish You Were Here, a celebration of musical legends lost before their time, including David Bowie, Prince, Amy Winehouse, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Whitney Houston and more. In this heartfelt tribute, Australia’s “vocal wonder from down under” (Broadway World) will take you on a feel-good journey through some of the world’s greatest hits of all time, including some of the group’s own fan favorites — classic rock anthems, current day chart toppers, even soaring arias of Verdi and other traditional favorites.

AMAZING GRACE

A NEW BROADWAY MUSICAL THU–SUN MAR 29–APR 1

“Inspirational, beautiful, emotional, exhilarating” – Associated Press

The awe-inspiring true story behind the world’s most beloved song — captured in a Broadway musical. “The hymn, which many associate with the civil rights movement, was written in the 18th century by an Englishman who worked in the slave-trading business. Curious to know more?” (New York Times). Torn between following in the footsteps of his father — a slave trader — or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart, John Newton embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas, accompanied by his slave, Thomas. That journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of selfreckoning that inspires a blazing anthem of hope.

ASK THE Expert

Are there any health benefits from routinely getting your carpet cleaned?

16

stylergbr.com // MARCH 2018 //

T

here are significant health benefits to maintaining clean carpets, especially in homes with young children. Homeowners must remember that this type of flooring is like a sponge; it will collect a variety of soils over time and hold them deep within the fibers until removed. With every step, a homeowner agitates the fibers and kicks loose soil into the air. Pet dander, dust, food particles, chemical residue, and microorganisms are some of the soils that can be dispersed this way, and they all represent a breathing risk. It’s one of the principle reasons why air quality inside homes is consistently worse than the air surrounding the building. ixed media artist Michelle Andres uses her own writing, along with ink, paint, graphite, and a variety of other mediums to create contemporary, bold, and empowering pieces. She’s also published a compilation of uplifting essays and collected works in a book titled ART— and Other Elements for a Well-Lived Life. In addition to authoring and updating her blog, Andres continues to display works at ARTHOUSE Gallery and Studios in Sacramento. “…The artist community feeds me, but the biggest feast comes through observation,” shares Andres. “We aren’t alone in our life experiences, and I love to tap into that humanity and lay it on a canvas.” The artist is currently showing her work at Gallery 216 on First in Benicia (through April 21), as well as co-exhibiting in May alongside artist Joe Bellacera as ARTHOUSE’s featured artists.

Too Much Style

Shine

HLB: HOW DID YOU DEVELOP AS AN ARTIST? MA: Growing up, I was an introspective, creative child who loved to write. Although I pursued a traditional career path to please my family, I continued to explore art and writing after hours. Corporate life was stifling, and one night I had an epiphany. I needed to live my life for me and follow my passion, so I became a corporate refugee, then a full-time artist, and I’ve never looked back.

Color Your World

HLB: WHAT THEMES DO YOU EXPLORE IN YOUR WORK? MA: My blog “The Art of the Well-Lived Life” explores our human fabric and teases apart the thread of our common, often imperfect beliefs and behaviors. I view our flaws as an opportunity to accept one another and have honest conversations. I kept writing and painting separately until recently and now am enjoying incorporating words or poetry into my abstract mixed media artwork. [My paintings also include] mark making and symbolism and are often finished with resin.

Chasing the Light

HLB: HAVE THERE BEEN CHALLENGES TO BECOMING A FULL - TIME ARTIST? MA: Considering myself a professional artist came gradually. I started by volunteering and learned the business of curating, making, and selling art. People were generous and wonderful. As far as challenges, I think many artists create their own with doubt and insecurity, but it’s March 2-4 – inevitable when you work so close to the bone. I believe it’s critical Thoroughly Modern to have a good support system—my husband is the best! Millie. Stand Out

Talent presents this fast-paced musical spoof of the Roaring Twenties about a girl from Kansas who moves to New York City to marry a rich man. As she samples the “thoroughly modern” flapper life and makes friends, she also finds unexpected romance and nearly gets caught up in a white slavery ring. Show times vary. standouttalent.org

HLB: WHY IS ART SO VITAL IN PEOPLE’S LIVES? MA: I believe what we perceive as our daily reality is pretty far from where our souls reside. Art reconnects us to that tender place, our innate truth, our hopeful nature and belief that there really is beauty and wonder in the world. HLB: DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURE GOALS? MA: Each day I strive to produce better work. I believe the stories I tell bring value to people, so of course, I’d like to share them with a greater audience. The wonderful thing about art is there’s always room to grow. michelleandresart.com

What’s the Point?

he fear of needles is a common phobia, but it shouldn’t stop you from trying acupuncture, a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). “Acupuncture is the use of fine, filiform—meaning thread-like—needles inserted into the body to bring change to a person’s health,” explains Wendy Stedeford, MSAOM, LAc, at Wendy Stedeford Acupuncture in El Dorado Hills. “Filiform needles are solid and sometimes as thin as a single human hair.” Rosie McNeilly, LAc, owner of El Dorado Community Acupuncture in Shingle Springs, wants you to know that acupuncture is a process. “If you’re

seeking treatment for a long-standing problem, I recommend committing to at least 10 treatments to give [it] a fair shot at making a difference. Coming in for a single treatment is a bit like taking one vitamin or doing one workout—it’s probably good for you, but you won’t notice any big results unless you stick with it.” Here are seven reasons you should try acupuncture. HELPS WITH PHYSICAL PAIN Whether you’re recovering from an injury or suffering from chronic pain, acupuncture can help. Emiko Okabe, LAc, owner of Sakura Acupuncture in Folsom, says treatments shorten the time required to heal from trauma. “Acupuncture treatments are helpful for acute or chronic pain, such as neck pain, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, back pain, bursitis, tendonitis, sciatica, and carpal tunnel syndrome, or trauma from sprains, strains, bruises, or bone fractures.”

7 Reasons to Try Acupuncture

BOOSTS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM “The health benefits of acupuncture are far-reaching,” says Jennifer Niemeyer, MSAOM, LAc, owner of The Root Wellness in Roseville. “We balance your body by stimulating the central nervous system and your immune system to allow the body to heal itself. The possibilities are endless, and it’s also great to use as prevention to keep from getting sick.”

2

IMPROVES MENTAL HEALTH Patients receiving regular acupuncture treatments report benefits like improved energy and better digestion. “Acupuncture engages the parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging the body to ease into its natural ‘rest-and-digest’ healing state,” McNeilly says. “Since many people are chronically stressed, their bodies are stuck in fight-or-flight mode almost all the time. This constant stress erodes mental and physical health, and acupuncture is a great antidote.”

NEW TO THE COMMUNITY

3

TREATS SPECIFIC HEALTH CONCERNS Okabe says acupuncture can treat neurological issues, including headaches and migraines; respiratory issues, like hay fever, allergies, sinusitis, and asthma; and gynecological issues, such as irregular menstruation, PMS, and infertility.

4

COMPLEMENTS WESTERN MEDICINE Acupuncture can stand on its own or work really well with all other health interventions. “We work great as team members for many kinds of health challenges, such as cancer,” Stedeford says. “Acupuncture can help to alleviate the potential negative side effects of other therapies, such as chemo or radiation. We can also address most infertility challenges and work well as a team member if the patient is also using Western medicine interventions.”

5

RELIEVES STRESS “Immediately following acupuncture treatments, patients feel highly relaxed and report being freed of their stresses,” Okabe says. “Acupuncture alleviates causative factors to poor mental health, [including] psychosomatic issues of insomnia, mild depression, anxiety, stress, irritability, and fatigue.”

6

AS A LAST RESORT “One of my goals as a practitioner is to communicate to people how amazing this medicine is,” Niemeyer says. “Often, people come to me after they’ve tried everything else. [Though] I’m happy to help these people, once you’ve been sick for a long time, the road to recovery is longer and there’s a risk of not being able to fully heal. If you try natural medicine as a first resort and closer to the onset of a problem, there’s a much better chance of being able to completely restore your health.” Stedeford adds: “Whatever the challenges a person is experiencing, the acupuncturist finds the pattern and always treats what is manifesting. They say a poor acupuncturist only treats the manifesting symptoms a person has; a good acupuncturist treats the reasons why those symptoms are manifesting.”

T

wo years ago, Parmis Pourarian turned on the TV to see news of a car crash that killed a husband and child, leaving behind his wife and another child. “I just lost

it,” Parmis says, who was pregnant at the time. “I thought of what this woman was going through and wanted to help her.” She tried to raise money but discovered she couldn’t. “I

wasn’t a nonprofit, so no one would donate.” The experience sharpened her resolve to reach out to others in need. As a successful real estate agent, she knew many women who shared her passion and—alongside her two sisters—devised a creative idea for fund-raising, ultimately forming the Placer County nonprofit: Power of 100 Women. The premise is as simple as it is appealing. One hundred women, recruited by Parmis and her sister, Amitis, owner of THE STUDIO Martial Arts and Fitness in Roseville (the third sister, Amalis, lives in San Diego), pledge to attend a dinner at a stylish restaurant four times a year and donate money to local nonprofits. Parmis chooses a theme for the evening, invites related nonprofits to pitch their programs, then, after extensive vetting, selects three to attend the dinner and tell their stories.

Each member allocates a minimum of $100 among the presenters. Last year, its first, the group exceeded their $40,000 target and raised $75,000. The approach is perfect for busy women, Parmis says. The financial commitment is low enough that anyone can participate yet the collective impact is dramatic. The women get to choose exactly whom their money will benefit and enjoy a relaxing evening together without the stress of putting on a big production. Though the goal per quarter is $10,000, each meeting’s donations have exceeded that amount. Often the women are so moved by the presenters they give to all of them. Some provide additional in-kind services. Garri Tsibel, DDS, from Olympus Pointe Orthodontics in Roseville, for example, offered braces to a foster child with badly misaligned teeth; the owner of Rima Boutique in Roseville outfitted a homeless woman from the Acres of Hope program; and Amitis often provides free taekwondo instruction at her studio. Mindful of the young accident victim she couldn’t help, Parmis also networks through her group to fund-raise for immediate crises; last year, she arranged a private movie showing to generate money for victims of the Napa fires. At Christmas, Amitis opened her studio for a Santa Claus party for preschoolers and kindergartners, who—along with Saint Nick—decorated and filled 200 snack bags for the homeless. The success of Power of 100 Women “has been good for my soul,” Parmis says. Her family has been blessed, she says, and she always knew she wanted to give back. “I have three children, and I want them to know there’s hardship in the world—that there are less fortunate people who don’t have enough to eat.” powerof100women.com

Tech to Connect

5 Smart Home Systems by KERRIE L. KELLY, FASID

hese days, technology is our friend, making our lives effortless through automation and simplicity. Products designed to help us

streamline tasks and flow throughout the day with ease are hitting the market every day; considering Americans spend over 90 percent of their time indoors, and with the persistence of smartphones constantly at our fingertips, it makes sense that homes are adapting to this lifestyle, too. Home-management systems help to streamline the process of maintaining a well-lit, comfortable abode while also providing security and energy maintenance. Here are five ways to leverage technology in your own home. VOICE - CONTROLLED SPEAKERS With products from Amazon, Google, and most recently Apple, the purpose of “smart speakers” is two-fold: They create a central hub for the whole family by listening and performing like an assistant by linking to various other devices

1

in your home, and they play music like a traditional speaker system. Usually they’re connected to your phone via Bluetooth and respond to your voice with specific commands, allowing you to order a pizza, set a reminder, make a phone call, and even adjust lighting in your house through smart lighting options. HIGH - TECH LIGHTING Speaking of smart lighting, did you know there are specialty lights that reduce your energy intake and connect to your smartphone? Swapping out bulbs for smart LED lights doesn’t only use less energy overall; you can also program them remotely, so if you forget to turn the lights off after you head to work, you can shut them off from your phone. You’ll never waste electricity by leaving the lights on again!

2

SECURITY SYSTEMS Thanks to smart technology, you can get a professionalgrade security system without the fees or installation hassles we used to endure. Smart security systems use your smartphone, Wi-Fi, and a small camera to monitor your entire space and give you 24/7 access to the goings-on in your home. They can push an alert right to your fingertips when someone is at the front door or moving inside your home. Plus, these security systems

are streamlined, simple to use, and often disguised as sleek and contemporary décor. SMART THERMOSTATS While you inch your way toward a smarter, tech-savvy home, your first step might be incorporating an energy-saving thermostat. The everyday thermostat that was installed in your rental unit before you moved in is more than likely unattractive and difficult to program. Modern thermostats are sleek and eco-friendly— not to mention cost cutting. Equipped with the power to learn your schedule and behavioral patterns, they’re able to adjust according to your habits and maintain your heating and cooling schedule with just a click of a button.

FUTURISTIC BATHROOMS As a brand ambassador for Robern, I get to see some of the great products they offer for bathrooms and powder rooms to make your morning routine seamless. Expertly lighted mirrors provide proper color and hue, so you can be sure you’re blending your makeup well and not a hair is out of place; innovative electrical plugs inside vanity drawers help keep cords off the counter; while charging ports for phones and other devices behind a vanity mirror provide simple solutions to common problems. One of my favorite features is the defogging technology included in the mirrors, so you don’t have to spend an extra moment waiting before you start getting ready.

THE ALL-AMERICAN BURGER AT HALFTIME BAR AND GRILL

Biscuit and Gravy Bowl

Bánh Mì Fries

$9.99 at Barn Burner

4800 Granite Drive, Rocklin, 916-259-1751

Oversize portions seem to be the norm these days, and Barn Burner’s biscuit and gravy bowl is big and brimming with a breakfast bounty—two buttermilk biscuits, a heaping helping of sausage gravy, and two eggs any way you please. The biscuits and gravy, like most everything else on the menu, is made in-house, possibly using some of the unique decorations hanging throughout the interior. Just kidding, of course, but the cheesegrater lamps and wooden ladder chandelier provide some playful repurposing ideas. The menu also includes some whimsical items (sweet potato tots instead of home fries) as well as gluten-free and vegetarian options.

Pasta Lunch Special

$10 at Broderick Roadhouse

1516 Eureka Road, Roseville, 916-771-2722, broderickroadhouse.com

When I was given this assignment, the instructions were “breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and no Happy Hour items.” The implication being main courses only, but what if an “appetizer” contains salad, protein, and a starch and easily feeds two people? I say it’s an entrée! Such is the dilemma with the bánh mì fries at Broderick Roadhouse. Appetizer or main course? Tantalizingly tangy, sweet and spicy, full of tender pulled pork, crunchy vegetables, and a Vietnamese citrus caramel sauce—all piled high over a stack of Broderick’s signature French fries. It’s not a combination you’ll find anywhere close to home or maybe anywhere at all, except Broderick. Bring a friend, grab a cold brew, and dig in!

$8.99 at Primo Pizza, Burgers, and Brew

2600 Sunset Boulevard, Suite 103, Rocklin, 916-259-1010, primopizzarocklin.com

I polled my friends on Facebook a couple months back for the best local burger, and to my surprise, Primo was the favorite, so it should be no surprise that they serve a “Pasta Lunch Special” that might become your favorite as well. Pick from your choice of fettucini Alfredo, spaghetti bolognese, or marinara, with garlic bread and soup or salad—all for $7.99. Primo’s has a local neighborhood vibe and friendly staff that make for an enjoyable experience, especially when you can enjoy it with a steaming hot bowl of pasta for under $9. Stop by and see why so many friends love this place.

Huevos Rancheros $10.99 at Granite Rock Grill

Sometimes you just want a homemade breakfast—without making it yourself. That’s why the good folks at Granite Rock Grill (GRG) have been a staple in Rocklin for so long. What would Sunday mornings be without huevos rancheros? For me, it’d be a bad start to Monday. GRG serves their weekend saver with two eggs, homemade rancheros sauce, chili, jack cheese, avocado, and a tortilla. Each order includes your choice of home-fried potatoes, hash browns, grits, tomatoes, fruit, or cottage cheese, and either toast or a homemade biscuit. Make sure you get some of their scratch-made jam on that toast or biscuit, too. Bonus points for the Etch A Sketch to keep the kiddos (and adults) occupied!

The All-American Burger $10.75 at Halftime Bar and Grill

5681 Lonetree Boulevard, Rocklin, 916626-3600, strikesrocklin.com

Bowling, burgers, and beers—what could be better, you ask? How about the burger without having to break a sweat bowling (I’m a less than stellar bowler)? And how about that burger cooked fresh, with your choice of cheese (cheddar, jack, Swiss, provolone, or pepper jack), plus lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles, with a side of either beer-battered fries, sweet potato fries, garlic fries, onion rings, soup or salad? Did I mention the price for all that grub is 10 big ones? So let’s recap—you walk past the bowling lanes (because you left your custom shoes at home), saunter up to the bar (or a table) where there’s a smiling face to greet you, and order one of the best burgers. Perfect game!

Main Street BLAT

$9.95 at Bar 101 Eats and Drinks

101 Main Street, Roseville, 916-774-0505, bar101roseville.com

There must be some science behind the formula of bacon + tomato + lettuce + toasted bread + mayo=happiness2. And when you add garlic mayo + avocado to the equation, it doesn’t take a beautiful mind to calculate the resulting outcome. Bar 101 in Downtown Roseville offers its own accounting, featuring applewood smoked bacon, juicy

tomatoes, lettuce, and creamy avocado with a smear of garlic aioli on white or wheat toast. Growing up at my house with five brothers, mayo, bacon, ripe garden tomatoes, and white bread were staples (it was the ’70s, OK!), so we made the best use of them. Years later the word Haas was universally accepted into the formula. The only other improvement would be to enjoy one of your favorite beers on tap!

Large Crab Salad Bowl $9.95 at Yummy Poke

6696 Lonetree Boulevard, Suite 300 Rocklin, 916-872-1477, myyummypoke.com

PHOTOS BY DANTE FONTANA.

I got hooked on poke in Oahu a few years ago, but when I got back, there were no poke restaurants in the area to be found. Now, places like Yummy Poke are starting to dot the local landscape. The format is very much like its Hawaiian cousins. Specify your protein like spicy tuna, spicy salmon, plain salmon, plain tuna, octopus, shrimp, albacore, or tofu; then your base—white or brown rice, mixed greens, or half and half—before traveling on to your sauces (five to pick from in total), and any combination of around 15 toppings. I typically pick the non-raw large crab salad bowl with four scoops of surimi (artificial crab) atop mixed greens, with sweet unagi sauce, and just about every topping they offer. The result is a $9.95 salad masterpiece—and a cure for my poke addiction.

Chicken Parmigiana Sandwich $9.99 at Rosati’s Pizza

5140 Foothills Boulevard, Suite 110, Roseville, 916-797-7492, myrosatis.com

Whether Peyton Manning sings about it or Tony Soprano asks for a “sangwich” after having somebody “whacked,” the iconic chicken parm sandwich has embedded itself into American pop culture and dining rooms. And why

not? The combination of gooey mozzarella, marinara, and breaded chicken breast on a soft roll is the Italian-American version of “winner winner chicken dinner,” or lunch. Rosati’s serves theirs with a house salad or crispy French fries for an unbeatable price—or as they say on the East Side, fughetaboutit. Here on the West Side (of Roseville), we don’t forget about food this tasty!

Half Monaco Sandwich and Choice of Side

$8 at La Provence Restaurant and Terrace

110 Diamond Creek Place, Roseville, 916-789-2002, laprovenceroseville.com

One of my favorite date night (or pleasant afternoon) venues, La Provence, features fine French food like côtes de boeuf, potato gnocchi with Parmesan cream and truffle essence, and wines from the most prestigious wineries in Napa, Sonoma, and France. They also serve a delicious half sandwich and a side during lunch for a whopping eight bucks. Have a seat on the terrace or inside by the fire and treat yourself and your special someone to a delicious roast turkey or roast beef sandwich with avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, alfalfa sprouts, provolone cheese, aioli, and Dijon on your choice of a soft roll or brioche. Add to that the side of your choice: soup of the day, French fries, sweet potato fries, house salad, or Caesar salad, and walk away satiated and smiling.

The Hot Bar

$8.99 per pound at Whole Foods Market 1001 Galleria Boulevard, Roseville, 916-781-5300, wholefoodsmarket.com

When I can’t decide what I want for lunch or dinners, and I know I don’t want to spend a fortune, the hot bar at Whole Foods Market is a perfect option. I can browse several mouthwatering cuisines before settling on Italian meatballs, curried cauliflower, Hawaiian chicken wings, chicken fried rice, garlic green beans, cheese enchiladas, or mac and cheese. Mix and match to your palate’s content. Everything tastes fresh, is cooked in-house, and is of restaurant quality. Pay at the register then dine inside or out on the patio to enjoy your meal and engage in a little people-watching!

Pork Shu Mei

*$9.95 at Fat’s Asia Bistro

1500 Eureka Road, Roseville, 916-787-3287, fatsasiabistro.com

Looking for traditional dim sum in the Folsom area would be futile if not for the folks at Fat’s Asia Bistro. Among the available offerings is their housemade pork shu mei—five, bag-shaped wonton dumplings (representing good luck gifts, I’m told) stuffed with ground pork, ginger, garlic, and chopped scallions, then steamed and served in the customary bamboo basket. A soybrown sugar dipping sauce complements the savory dumplings. This is an excellent starter by itself or as part of the complete “dim sum basket,” which also features crab rangoon and chicken pot stickers. (*Lunch price)

Lunch Special

$7.45-$8.45 at Bambu Asian Cuisine

Restaurants come and go, and if you live in the same community for long enough, you’ll lose your fair share. If your favorite Chinese food establishment closes, it’s a minor catastrophe. Once you’ve invested the time to find out what you like and start to crave that dish, no other can be an adequate substitute. So it is with Bambu Asian Cuisine in Roseville. When I want Chinese food for lunch, I go and get a lunch special. Whether it’s Kung Pao chicken, Thai spicy shrimp, orange chicken, or General Tso’s chicken, I know it’s going to be good, filling (each special includes salad, soup of the day, steamed or fried rice, and a crispy Imperial Roll), and under $9.

It’s not that difficult to find three ground beef tacos for under 10 bucks, but good luck tracking down short rib barbacoa, chicken mole, pork belly, rajas con queso, ground pork, and shrimp for that price. The house-made mini corn tortillas are crafted from nixtamalized flour—a process that removes toxins and improves flavor and aroma—making them that much more extraordinary. Nixtaco is one of my “go-to” spots when friends and acquaintances ask me for restaurant recommendations, and they never leave disappointed!

Coolzone (Calzone) $8.99 at Cool River Pizza

6200 Stanford Ranch Road, Suite 700, Rocklin, 916-772-0505, coolriverpizzarocklin.com

How can you go wrong with made-from-scratch calzones with fresh mozzarella and house-made dough (thin with the perfect bite), up to four toppings, and Cool River red sauce? You can’t. The

crust is thin and has the perfect bite. It’s essentially an inside-out pizza that you can pick up or eat with a fork without offending the pizza purists. I like to order “Coolzones” as a surprise when the household asks for a pizza, and there’s never any leftovers. Dine-in or order to go—the quality never varies. Their “Party Room” and patio are a great place for a team meeting and a pizza buffet! They truly do serve the community “one slice at a time.”

example of Zest’s ability to coax bushels of flavor from passive ingredients like garbanzos and cabbage. Pairing the chickpeas with chipotle as the base, then infusing lime and cilantro into a slaw to top the taco provides a punch to the palate. With a soothing finish of cashew-lime “sour cream,” these tacos not only live up to their namesake, but they also take tacos to a new destination.

OK, let's get the obvious out of the way first. KOJA is a portmanteau of KOrea and JApan, and a Koja is a sweetened, fried rice cake taco or sandwich with meat and vegetables in between. These include flavors like the original short rib—“like a burger but better” says their website. Dig into fried garlic rice buns, Korean BBQ short rib (kalbi), sesame vinaigrette lettuce, katsu, aioli, and sesame seeds; you can also add things like pineapple and kimchi. The rest of the Koja lineup includes beef, braised pork, chicken, and vegetarian teriyaki zen. This is a true foodie find and will leave you wondering “How did they?” and “Why didn’t I?” KOJA also serves all of the Koja offerings as rice bowls and tacos. Also, check out their umame and kamakaze fries.

Chicken Pho

$8.95 at DT Noodle

5015 Foothills Boulevard, Suite 3, Roseville, 916-797-8883, dtnoodle.com

I didn’t grow up eating pho (much to my chagrin), but I’ve made up for lost time the past few years. Since I found DT Noodle, no longer do I have to make the trek to Sacramento to get my fix of the delicious Vietnamese soup. I like to sit where I can see right into the kitchen and watch as the chef prepares the fresh meat and vegetables and delivers them into the steaming, flavorful bath of broth. Served with fragrant basil, bean sprouts, lime, and sliced jalapeño peppers on a separate plate, diners are able to add flavors to their own individual tastes. They also serve plenty of vegetarian options and a tasty bánh mì sandwich for $5.95.

Chicken Teriyaki Noodle Bowl $7.25 at Teriyaki To Go

5098 Foothills Boulevard, Suite 1, Roseville, 916-772-2540

$10 at Vaiano Trattoria

7160 Douglas Boulevard, Granite Bay, 916-7800888, vaianotrattoria.com

“Please go to this pizzeria. Order the Pizza Margherita with double mozzarella. If you do not order this pizza when you are in Naples Granite Bay, please lie to me and tell me that you did.” Author Elizabeth Gilbert wrote this (minus my literary license) a few years back, and it echoes my sentiment about pizza margherita—it is the foundation by which all pizza should be judged. Mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, basil, and leavened dough—all cooked quickly in a blisteringly hot oven. In other words, technical yet straightforward, understated perfection. If you can get one that fits the description like this for 10 dollars, you should go there, often. I’m sure the author would have approved of Vaiano Trattoria’s authentic pie, double cheese or not. It’s nothing to lie about.

Teriyaki To Go is the go-to place for fast, delicious, and filling teriyaki plates, salads, and noodle and rice bowls at a fantastic price. Their chicken teriyaki noodle bowl is almost legendary in town, thanks to its generous serving of plump, pan-fried udon noodles and deliciously tender teriyaki chicken that’s stir-fried with carrots, cabbage, broccoli, and bean sprouts, then finished with a crunch of sesame seeds. With sauce that’s slightly sweet and a whole lot of savory without a touch of MSG, you’ll find yourself craving this more than your waistline will appreciate. Although to-go is in their name and it’s a favorite for takeout, there is seating available should you decide to dine in and chat with the friendly owner.

Chicken Pakora

$6.99 at Tandoori Bite

Sink your teeth into eight pieces (yep, that’s not a typo) of chicken breast meat dipped in chickpea batter and deep-fried for six dollars and 99 cents…and be prepared to have your palate blown! The chicken is moist and crispy, presented with sweet turmeric and spicy mint dipping sauces, and it’s finger-licking…you know the rest. This is a secret recipe from someone other than the Colonel. Here’s another not-so-well-kept secret—there are so many menu items under $10 here that I actually lost count. Chaats, wraps, breads, samosas—all made in-house adhering to time-tested family recipes. The service is fast and friendly, and the food is worth coming back for.

Pastor Wrap

$9 at Mezcalito Oaxacan Cuisine

5065 Pacific Street, Rocklin, 916-701-4772, mezcalitocuisine.com

Something is obviously wrong on Yelp. As of this writing, 81 reviews and 74 are five stars; the remaining are all four stars without a complaint. This happens about as often as a total eclipse of the sun and moon. My guess is that Mezcalito is so that good that no one has anything to complain about. Having never been, I found this to be a compelling reason to investigate this phenomenon. What I discovered was a delicious pastor wrap for $9—and lots of smiling faces. The wrap was stuffed with pork adobo, fingerling potatoes, sautéed peppers, mushrooms, onions, guacamole, jack cheese, pico de gallo, and sour cream in a large flour tortilla. Mark it five stars from me.

Mushroom Swiss Burger

$6.75 at Mooyah Burger, Shakes and Fries

5194 Commons Drive, Suite 110, Rocklin, 916-660-9591, mooyah.com

I knew there had to be some middle ground between the new price point of $14 burgers and the under $4 fast food burger (or $3 or $2 offerings…eaten at your own risk). Mooyah serves a certified Angus beef patty with Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, and fried onion strings on a potato bun for the 1990s price of $6.75! Add “personal fries” for $2.89, and you’re still under $10 for a quality burger meal! Another favorite is the cheddar bacon burger with grilled onions and barbecue sauce, aka, the perfect combination.

Arroz Con Pollo

*$9.95 at La Huaca Peruvian Restaurant

9213 Sierra College Boulevard, Suite 140, Roseville, 916-771-2558, lahuacarestaurant.com

Simply translated from Spanish, arroz con pollo is chicken with rice, but that’s where the simplicity ends. Depending on the heredity of its preparer, versions of arroz con pollo may have saffron or annatto, beer, chicken or sausage, peas, corn, and always rice. The Peruvian form (at Lu Huaca), according to their menu, features “infused rice in cilantro sauce with grilled chicken breast, carrots, and peas served with salsa criolla.” The latter is a mix of onions, chilis, lime juice, olive oil, vinegar, cilantro, salt, and pepper. It’s a complex flavor profile that I wouldn’t try to replicate for a group of traditionalists; in other words, it’d be smarter to take them out to dinner at La Huaca. (*Lunch price)

Grilled Pear Salad $8.50 at Chicago Fire

PHOTOS BY DANTE FONTANA.

500 North Sunrise Avenue, Roseville, 916-771-2020, chicagofire.com

We’re fortunate here in Northern California to have access to quality pears, which makes us even more privileged to have those delicious, crisp slices grilled in a salad with creamy goat cheese, candied walnuts, and mixed greens. Chicago Fire’s housemade balsamic dressing is the perfect pairing and provides a tangy punch to a refreshing light meal or a satisfying starter. I’ve eaten at this location multiple times, and the grilled pear salad is always the first item to hit the table. (True story: I’ve even DoorDashed it.) It comes with their garlic foccacia bread but I recommend ordering extra ($6.95) for a complete meal.

Combination Plate

$10.79 at Kabob and

5005 Foothills Boulevard, Suite 3A, Roseville, 916-788-1888

This is a no-frills place. It’s hidden on the side of a strip mall. You don’t come here for the ambiance, the view, or pleasant interaction with your server (there is no server). You come here for one reason alone: The food is straight-up delicious and the price to value/flavor ratio as good as it gets. The combination plate contains hefty portions of exquisitely seasoned beef, lamb, and chicken, tzatziki sauce, basmati rice, Mediterranean salad, hummus, and pita bread. The kabobs, shawarma, and gyro are also favorites.

Fans of Mikuni are used to getting quality maki rolls with the freshest ingredients available, so it’s no surprise that their rolls typically run in the $11-$16 range. But if you’re diligent in perusing the menu, there are deals to be had. The Fair Oaks Roll is the Mikuni equivalent of a blue-plate special, exceptional value for a first-rate roll. It features crunchy, panko-coated shrimp with avocado, then is rolled in sushi rice and topped with their special sauce, masago, and onions. This is also a good starting point for those friends and family who are new to, or afraid of, anything sushi (we all know somebody).

I

Corned Beef and Pastrami with Hash Browns

t’s amusing the things you don’t notice until someone points them out. I’ve been coming to Venita Rhea’s for several years and until this last visit—when my server hinted that there were things I should be aware of—I never knew about the “secrets of the wall.” Not wanting to play the spoiler, I’ll let those of you who are also in the dark experience it for yourselves. Hint: The kids will love it. Big kids, too! Looking beyond the wall, the décor is a pleasant mix of art and kitschy country—the kind of place that says “come in and eat breakfast (or lunch).” Breakfast it was for me. Sometimes you just gotta go big, like corned beef and pastrami with hash browns (Venita Browns) big. In addition to those ingredients, the dish also had two eggs, a mountain of melted cheddar cheese, sour cream, and green onions. This wasn’t a wimpy-skimpy hash with finely diced threads of corned beef; it

/stylergbr /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemagrgbr

was full slices of two proteins competing for plate space with enough golden-griddled Venita Browns to cover the table. Pro tip: Cover the whole enchilada with gravy—now that’s big league! Next up and still going strong, I ordered chicken fried steak and eggs. The menu says, “All of our plates come with two AA extra large eggs. If you want three eggs, just tell us, the third one is free.” I would think about that before you say yes—this is a three-plate breakfast—but what the heck, an extra egg won’t even be noticed while you’re navigating through, over, and around an entire plate of nothing but crispy, meaty chicken fried steak and creamy gravy. Plate number two lurks with a full cargo of Venita Browns and the aforementioned quantity of eggs. Pause not, or you shall fail, the toast plate awaits… If something on the sweeter side is your breakfast preference, you’ll need to have the cinnamon roll

French toast (occasionally served as a special; call ahead to check availability) topped with fresh fruit, aka the ultimate French toast experience. A frisbeesized pillow of sweet, cinnamon-infused pastry is dipped in egg batter, griddled, and topped with fruit and powdered sugar. I think the way to attack this monster is divide and conquer. Order one for the table, cut it like the cake it’s disguised as, and let

there be sticky fingers for all. The place can get a little busy on the weekends, but don’t fret: You can enjoy a cup of complimentary coffee outside. Lunch is also an enticing option if you’re not a morning sort! Venita Rhea’s, 4415 Granite Drive, Rocklin, 916-624-2697, venitarheas.com

Chaat Paradise // Walking into Chaat Paradise, I knew close to nothing about Indian food and even less about vegetarian Indian

food. Thankfully, the staff was extremely helpful and patient with all my questions—and luckily no one complained about how long it took for me to order. Once I decided what to try, I took a cup of Masala Ginger Chai to my seat and sipped to the sounds of traditional music playing. The soul-soothing drink—made with milk and a combination of aromatic flavors like cardamom, ginger, cloves, and pepper—was like a warm spice explosion. Soon it was time for the main attraction: Aloo Masala, Vegetable Korma, Rice, and Roti. The colorful dishes arrived on a metal plate, and I couldn’t help but admire how the restaurant stuck with tradition—from food and music, to plates and cups. It made dinner more of an authentic experience. The aloo masala (curried mashed potatoes) served with roti (flatbread) was so flavorful that I placed another order to go. I may have also ordered more vegetable korma (a medley of vegetables and spices bathing in an addicting, flavor-packed cream sauce) with rice. Yes, it was that good. Next time I’ll try the gulab jamun. Deep-fried balls of dough in sugar syrup? I’m in! Chaat Paradise, 8680 Sierra College Boulevard, Suite 180, Roseville. 916-771-0222, chaatparadiseroseville.com.

6 Cheesy Favorites Say cheese! From fondue to fritters, we’ve rounded up our fromage favorites from around the region. compiled by STYLE STAFFERS // photos by DANTE FONTANA “If you ask me, I’d say: the more cheese, the better. And there’s nothing better than Cheeses Gone Wild at Folsom’s The Waffle Experience. Yep, this is where all your cheese dreams come true.” thewaffleexperience.com

“Folsom’s Back Bistro makes out-of-this-world Goat Cheese Fritters that are panko-crusted golden brown gems made from herbed goat cheese. Better than any mozzarella sticks I’ve eaten, these babies allow the earthy goat cheese to shine and are complemented by a bright and creamy Peruvian green sauce. The crisp-on-the-outsidesoft-on-the-inside fritters are anything but boring and make for the perfect bite-sized, cheesy appetizer.” backbistro.com

“La Provence in Roseville makes a Fondue d’Epinards et Artichauts that retains all the rich, smooth elements of a good fondue while adding their own twist in the form of spinach and artichokes (does that make it semi-healthy at least?). I like the bonus textures and flavors, the hit of heat with each bite, and the perfectly grilled flatbread that’s served alongside. Talk about the perfect way to fire up your appetite for a memorable meal.” laprovenceroseville.com

Seasonal Recipe and Beer Pairing BEEF AND GUINNESS STEW 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 lb. 2 oz. stewing steak, cut in 2-inch chunks 2 tbsp. canola oil, plus extra as needed An Irish Country Cookbook by Patrick Taylor and Dorothy Tinman (Forge Books, 2017, $32.99)

2 large onions, chopped 2 large carrots, peeled and chopped 1 parsnip, peeled and chopped 8 oz. Guinness 34 oz. beef stock 1 small bunch fresh thyme

Season the flour well with salt and pepper and coat the steak with the seasoned flour. Heat the oil in a Dutch oven or pan with a lid over medium-hot. Gradually add the meat to the hot oil and brown on all sides. Don’t add too much at a time. When all the meat has been browned, remove it from the Dutch oven to a plate. Add the onions, carrots, and parsnip and a little oil, if necessary, to the pan. Don’t worry about the brown caramelized remains of the meat, as this all adds to the flavor. Stir the vegetables around for a few minutes and then return the meat to the pan. Add the Guinness and cook, stirring to scrape the remains from the bottom. Add the stock and the thyme and simmer slowly for 2-3 hours. Remove the lid and the thyme stalks and cook for a further 30 minutes or so (until the liquid has reduced by about half). Serve with Yorkshire pudding and colcannon (for the recipes, visit stylergbr.com). Serves 4.

Author’s Note: I like to make the stew the previous day, because I think it improves the flavor.

Describe your business.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

My law practice focuses on construction and real estate matters. I enjoy practicing in this area because it allows me the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients: from homeowners doing their first remodel to long-established building contractors. We help our clients with all aspects of construction-related legal issues, including contracts, payment disputes, construction defects, and construction-related personal injuries.

My career in senior services found me several years ago after a family member’s journey into Alzheimer’s disease. I learned so much from the experience that I decided to dedicate myself to helping other families going through similar journeys. I gained valuable experience and insight working management positions in memory care, assisted living communities, and an in-home care agency. Last year, I started my own business assisting seniors and their families throughout Placer Country in finding the most appropriate and compatible longterm care. My services are provided at no charge and include custom referrals for independent living communities, assisted living, small residential (board and care) homes, and Alzheimer’s/dementia care. I present custom referrals to my clients after a careful evaluation of their care needs, along with discussion regarding budget, lifestyle, location preferences, and more. My goal is to ensure they’re not alone by providing the expertise, guidance, and support needed to find the right placement.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? When I’m away from the office I love playing in the Barton Douglas Band—a classic rock group that performs at events to raise money for various charities. It’s a lot of fun, and some of my clients even come and watch.

Why is your staff the best in the business? Our staff takes the time to get to know each client’s unique individual needs and objectives. Because of that, we can provide the best experience for everyone. We’ve had a number of clients thank us for helping them sleep at night.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? I’m a big fan of the tri-tip sandwich at Roundhouse Deli in Roseville.

And finally, customer service is…? Customer service is carefully listening to clients and learning what’s important to them. Most people would prefer not to have to see a lawyer; I understand that and work hard to make the process as stress-free as possible for each client.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? We visit local senior communities and care homes often and stay up to date on their reputations, vacancies, rates, etc. I also offer hands-on assistance to my clients; after a personal assessment of their needs, I accompany them to visit each referred community/ care home to help them weigh the pros and cons and be sure all of their questions are answered. Once a choice and move are made, my involvement continues, thus ensuring a smooth transition.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Being happily married for almost 38 years, having two wonderful children, two beautiful grandchildren, and being able to work in a field I love—helping other people!

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? I love The Place in Downtown Roseville.

DO YOU KNOW THAT OUR EDITORIAL IS NOT PAID FOR, NOR CAN IT BE PURCHASED?

In fact, our Introducing and Eat & Drink section reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

“This area has everything you need: great parks, fitness establishments, unique food (my favorites include Zocalo and Zest Kitchen), plazas, and activities (check out iFly and Petroglyph Ceramic Lounge) with an overall wonderful family environment. I have many fond memories of taking long walks on the Dry Creek Trail, and I feel it’s an important place to capture.” Photo by INGRID MARTINEZ
