5 Skin Care Myths, Debunked

SAVINGS GUIDE

T

his was how my night began—a somber yet optimistic Facebook post, which read: “I still write the old-fashioned way…with paper and pencil. It’s tough getting the words to flow tonight. I sit here now trying to contain my swirling thoughts in order to craft my final note to Style Magazine readers. Tear drop. It’s been nearly a decade and seems like just moments ago when I began this journey. It’s been fast, furious and fabulous.” I am leaving my post with a feeling of awe at the strong sense of community that abounds and the plentiful passion for a full life that both our region and residents exude graciously. I also leave with a rich knowledge of all that surrounds me, and great gratitude for sharing your stories. Considering our mantra, “We can always improve upon the existing,” my tenure has bore witness to substantial growth in every way imaginable—what we cover, how we cover it, and the way we present it to you. The process reflects a “Farewell: development much like that of a wish of the maturation of a child to a well-being successful adult, and we—the at parting; Style staff—have even referred goodto our magazine as “our baby.” There is, and will continue to bye.”— be, great care that contributes Merriamto this beautiful, thoughtful Webster piece of resourceful work that comes to life each month. Each month better than the previous, we hope you think anyway. I would be remiss not to give thanks where much is due. I first thank everyone on our team, because like any good machine, when one part is missing, everything stops. Secondly, I applaud Megan Wiskus for her undying devotion and diligence each and every day to the betterment of Style. I literally could not have done my job without her. Next, the design team: Gary Zsigo, Aaron Roseli and David Norby, as well as staff photographer Dante Fontana—I thank them profusely for putting up with my annoying idiosyncrasies, which I know for a fact caused a number of deserved eye-rolls. I proudly acknowledge Debra Linn for her great job as a mother hen who always noticed and consoled my need for attention. Then there’s Joanne Kilmartin, who started about a year before I, and is certainly the best teller of jokes I know. I would put her in my pocket and take her with me if I could. Last but for sure not least, Terry Carroll and Wendy Sipple (aka the powers that be) have supported and guided me though thick and thin, and I would not be where I am today without their presence in my life. We truly are a family here at Style, which is probably why we relate to yours so well. Enter Boyz II Men lyric: “It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.” Yet, tomorrow is a new day, and I can’t wait to see all that Style has in store for you. I bid you farewell, — Desiree

itrus Heights resident Lisa Marasso always loved drawing, but it wasn’t until a high school art teacher encouraged her to experiment with different media that she became inspired to think about becoming an artist. Her journey wasn’t as easy as going from point A to point B, however. Marasso became a mother while still in high school, and she soon found herself working and attending Sierra College—all while raising a young child on her own. Nonetheless, she persevered, and went on to complete both a bachelor’s and a Master of Fine Arts. These days, Marasso is a happily married 12 stylergbr.com - September 2016

mother of four and an established artist in her own right. She works from her studio at the Bridge Center for the Arts—displaying her works at museums and shows throughout the region—and has been the director of Sierra College’s Ridley Gallery for over a decade. The gallery’s current exhibition, Confluence, features new media and installations from Chico-based artists (sierracollege.edu/ about-us/beyond-the-classroom/ridleygallery). What’s more, Marasso recently wrapped up a stint as the interim director for Blue Line Arts. The artist has also come full circle in her return to Sierra College—this time as a

teacher for a variety of drawing and sculpture classes. She especially enjoys seeing how art broadens her students’ horizons. “Art makes us stop and think about the experiences of others,” Marasso explains. “It brings a lot of enjoyment and enrichment to the human experience.” — Amber Foster

WHAT’S IN

SEASON? Apples

“A

n apple for the teacher” is an age-old adage, probably because apples are coming into peak harvest just as school starts. Here in Placer County, we have some of the best apples around.

SELECTION AND STORAGE The early harvest brings Gala, Golden Delicious, Jonathan and Gravenstein, followed by Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji and Rome as fall progresses. Apples do best stored in a cool environment, like a crisper drawer. Discard apples if they are decaying, as the gas they produce will turn any surrounding fruit bad as well. To prevent browning of pre-sliced apples simply dip them in lemon juice. For extended storage, place slices on a cookie sheet, freeze and then transfer to bags. — Carol Arnold

ask the expert Q:

I’ve always prepared my food using store-bought vegetable oil and would like to find a healthier alternative. What’s the best option?

A: Olive oil is a great choice, as it provides both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. You will want to purchase from a reputable supplier, however, in order to ensure it’s a high polyphenol o i l . T h e re a re two reasons for this; polyphenols are responsible for sacrificing themselves and protect the oil from breaking down. The polyphenols are also responsible for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant health benefits. —Debra Manley, Owner Pairings 701 Pleasant Grove Boulevard Suite 180, Roseville 916-772-7247, pairingsevoo.com

DID YOU KNOW? Apples, whose trees are in the rose family, have been grown for thousands of years in Asia and Europe, and were brought to North America by European colonists. Over long periods of time, our cooler Sierra foothill nights create the best possible growing environment for a wide variety of apples, including Gravenstein, Gala and Golden Delicious. Apples are a low-calorie snack and provide good sources of vitamin C and fiber. Chewing an apple helps clean your teeth and stimulate your gums (one of the many great reasons to pack them in a lunch). Try to avoid peeling the fruit, as many of the beneficial nutrients are contained in the skin.

Just because school is in session, doesn’t mean the fun has to end! On September 11, honor those who serve our community and country at Rocklin Patriot Day. Johnson-Springview Park plays host to the event where attendees can watch a variety of demonstrations by police and fire, including the Jaws of Life and helicopter stunts; multiple vendors, kids’ activities, food and entertainment will also be available. For more info, visit rocklinpatriotday.com. If you’re ready for a modern take on jazz, grab tickets to see the famous Molly Ringwald—live at Quarry Park Amphitheater on September 17! The Pretty in Pink movie star was singing long before she became known as a Golden Globe-nominated actress. With influences like Ella Fitzgerald, Blossom Dearie and Bessie Smith, Ringwald has always had a connection to jazz, but during the ’80s, felt like she was the only one who did. Joining her for this performance is her father, Bob Ringwald, a major staple in the California jazz scene and former Placer County resident who helped found the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society and has taken his classic ragtime stylings all over the world. Tickets for An Evening with Molly Ringwald start at $39 and can be purchased at aneveningwithmollyringwald.eventbrite.com. Closing out the month is the final “Park it! Cheese Louise

fternoons on Downtown Roseville’s Vernon Street just got tastier, thanks to the debut of Cheese Louise, a café specializing in grilled cheese sandwiches. Nestled on a corner of the narrow business stretch, it’s a convenient pitstop for lunch after a day of browsing surrounding shops. Gaping front windows welcome any and all passersby, and the employees follow suit, greeting me on my last visit like I was an old friend. A friendly exterior design and staff is matched with an equally entertaining seating assortment: a red and a white couch, high chairs paralleling the walls and looking out windows, and an elevated red-carpeted section with café tables. After eyeing the brief menu, I decided on the Herbal French, which boasted unique additions of salami and subtly sweet pear slices, a pleasant bonus to the already-splendid sandwich. Next to the register is a tempting pastry selection with apple fritters, blueberry scones, croissants, coffee pound cake and more, but be ready to take one for the road, as the main dish—a $10 meal, including seasoned fries and a fountain drink—left me delightfully stuffed. Consistency—and grilled cheeses—are satisfying, and Cheese Louise offers both, so it’s safe to say that I’ll be back. FACTS & FIGURES — Compiled by Sharon Penny

1908

The year the Roseville, or McRae, Opera House was built. It was the cultural center of town for many years (and one of the first multi-story buildings in Roseville)— hosting everything from live theater, plays, travelling shows, boxing matches and roller skating. Now known as the Opera House Saloon, it’s enjoying postcentennial life as a popular local live music venue.

Number of stars Leonard Maltin gave the 1984 movie Impulse—starring our very own town of Lincoln as one of its filming locations. Other stars included Tim Matheson (Animal House), Meg Tilly (The Big Chill) and Bill Paxton (Aliens). With such star power you might be confused by the poor review. Here’s the synopsis, as summarized by Lincoln local Jane Tahti: “A little earthquake causes a toxic spill that contaminates local dairy cows and their milk causes the whole town to go crazy.” Nothing weird there…

At the time of printing we can’t tell you whether or not he was succkessful, but as an Air Force Academy graduate, we can tell you that whether he flies through air with the aid of a giant pole, or flies in a fighter plane, he’s going to soar.

“Beef-eaters will rejoice the moment they step inside Flame & Fire. Not only is it a Brazilian steakhouse that offers all-you-can-eat meat, but a bevy of salads and veggies too. From the top sirloin to the bacon-wrapped filet mignon, it’s a party on your palate every time.” flameandfire.com

T

he band Vino Banditos is comprised of four talented, long-term musicians and friends: John Young (vocals and guitar), John “JT” Taylor (vocals and bass), Randy Walker (vocals and lead guitar) and Steve Cain (drums). Officially formed in 2012, the group began in the neighborhood they all share, over shared 22 stylergbr.com - September 2016

passions as well—music and wine. After many rehearsals and beautiful bottles of Barbera, the name stuck, and the group has been rocking wineries and breweries across the region ever since. On November 12, they will partner with the Country Club Saloon in Loomis for their annual fund-raiser benefitting the Placer Food Bank.

HLB: There’s no shortage of amazing vineyards at which to perform—what drew you to the setting? VB: We like to think of the band as the perfect blend of reds, whites and blues. We love music, and we love wine. It just seemed like a natural pairing for us. Being able to play music with your best friends on a Friday or Saturday afternoon, surrounded by family and friends, while enjoying so many delicious wines that the region has to offer… what could be better?

HLB: How has your band changed over the years? VB: Vino Banditos has been one of the best experiences in each of our long musical journeys. People often say, “You guys always look like you’re having so much fun playing together.” Well, it’s true— we’re having a blast! What started out as neighborhood friendships has formed, literally, into a band of brothers with a brotherhood that will last far after our last call.

HLB: What can attendees expect at a Vino Banditos show? VB: Rock and soul—uncorked and unfiltered. We’re all about variety and, although we started out strictly acoustic, we’ve evolved. We begin each show with a soulful, intimate acoustic vibe that masterfully crescendos throughout the show, ultimately transforming into an electric rock performance. We include classic hits from the ’60s through today. Soon, you’re singing along, tapping your toes and eventually on the floor dancing. In the end, we fill up our chalices and raise a toast to celebrate the love of wine, music and debauchery.

5 Skin Care Myths, Debunked by Kourtney Jason

N

ot all makeup is created equal, according to Scott Hearth, MD, dermatologist at Granite Bay Dermatology and Laser Center. “[However], most of the active ingredients in over-the-counter makeup and skin care products are generally considered safe and well-tolerated by most people,” he says. The most common problem that he sees with the use of skin care products

is rashes, which shouldn’t be surprising when most product labels include warnings to immediately stop use if a rash appears. “These rashes usually develop from irritation or allergy to one of the active or inactive ingredients,” he says. Are you using the best products for your skin? We asked Dr. Hearth to chime in on common skin care myths.

1 / Myth: Any product can be used for any skin type. Truth: “Most importantly, when choosing products for the skin, it’s important to choose [ones] that are best suited for your skin type, i.e. normal, dry, oily, sensitive, combination, etc. For example, if a person has oily skin or is prone to breaking out, oil-free or noncomedogenic products are best. Conversely, a person with dry or sensitive skin should look for products that have moisturizers and are fragrance-free,” he says.

2 / Myth: Certain ingredients can help with specific skin problems. Truth: Yes. “When choosing a product, look for ingredients that are beneficial for any special needs that you would like to address—acne, sun damage, wrinkles, dark spots, etc.,” he says. “Products containing

3 / Myth: Moisturizer with sunscreen and/ or makeup with SPF 15 are just as effective as actual sunscreen. Truth: Yes and no. It’s important to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Dr. Hearth recommends moisturizer and makeup with a minimum of SPF 15, but ideally with SPF 30 or higher. “Remember SPF refers to UVB protection. Make sure you are getting good UVA protection with sunscreens like avobenzone or zinc oxide, as UVA rays cause brown spots and wrinkles,” he says.

4 / Myth: If you have acneprone skin, your routine should include a scrub. Truth: False. “Avoid products that contain alcohol and witch hazel, or abrasive scrubs, which may irritate inflamed skin and worsen acne,” he warns. “Instead, look for products that have salicylic acid and glycolic acid, which help to unplug pores; or benzoyl peroxide, which works against acne-causing bacteria.”

5 / Myth: Natural and/ or organic products are always the best option. Truth: False. “Natural or organic products are not necessarily better just because they are natural or organic,” he says. “Looking for ingredients that have been shown to be beneficial for your type of skin is an important factor in selecting the right skin care products. Dermatologists are the physician experts in all things related to the skin and can be a valuable resource in helping to develop the best regimen for the health and appearance of your skin.”

retinol and stabilized vitamin C can help improve skin texture and fine wrinkles in sun damaged skin. To help lighten dark spots and unwanted pigmentation, look for products that contain these naturally derived ingredients: glycolic acid, kojic acid, N-acetylglucosamine, niaciamide (vitamin B3), L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and soy.”

the petal connection Compassion Blooms by Dayana Stockdale // photos by Dante Fontana

T

hink about all the flowers that are sold at grocery stores every day— especially during key holidays—and then think of all the ones that aren’t sold. When the dates on their packages expire (even if the flowers themselves look okay), they go straight in the trash. Thankfully, The Petal Connection breathes new life into the blooms. Since its inception in 2013, the Rocklin-based nonprofit’s dedicated volunteers have delivered over 16,000 bouquets to hospice patients and care facility residents. Jennifer Arey, president and founder, first heard about the idea of repurposing flowers from a friend in 2011. “The whole premise of it sounded amazing—such a simple concept with such a big impact,” she says. In 2012, when her grandmother went into hospice, she remembered the idea again. “You realize what those days are like and how hard it is to have any kind of bright spot in that time,” Arey says. The Petal Connection receives flowers

f ro m l o c a l m a r ke t s , including Raley’s, Bel Air, Nugget Market, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods; and from funeral homes and wedding venues. Arey explains that the brides who choose to donate their flowers typically have a personal connection with hospice. “Once someone knows t h a t s i t u a t i o n , t h ey [say]: ‘I’d love to give the flowers and share them with someone.’” Chris Sinclair Every Monday and Tuesday a dozen or more volunteers gather to arrange the flowers into bedside bouquets in mason jars, vases, baskets and other cute, creative holders. Laura Kuntz, who creates professional wedding floral arrangements, teaches the volunteers. “The majority of ladies

Linda Smith, Kelly Corado, Jennifer Arey, Laura Kuntz and Karen Edmonds

are retired,” says Arey. “They’re so funny. It’s a very active situation, and they get laughing and singing.” The comradery that has developed among the volunteers has strengthened the organization into a meaningful weekly event for those who love working with flowers. The group has a strong enough volunteer base to theoretically add a third day of flower arranging—if only they had access to more flowers. “We’re nothing without flowers,” Arey says. The team sorts through the donated bouquets, salvaging the flowers with the longest lifespans, the “champions” as Arey calls them. Between several different hospice organizations, hospitals and residential care homes, about 750 quality bouquets are donated each month. The deliveries are given to the organizations, which then distribute them to the patients. “Showing up with these delightful arrangements—with lovely and thoughtful notes from the creator of [each one]— speaks to the families in ways we cannot,” says Reverend Stephen Smith, director of bereavement and chaplain for Green Valley Hospice. “They say ‘We are your neighbors of care and compassion—and here is something we brought to brighten your day—you are important to us!’” Th e b o u q u e t s o f te n h e l p e a s e communication with patients, too. “We thought the idea of taking these little bouquets of love would brighten the lives of patients—and they do! Perhaps more importantly is the impact these flowers have with the caregivers and our team, and I didn’t see that coming,” says Smith. “Our nurses and the entire team love being able to bring the arrangements to our patients, their families and the caregivers in the facilities we serve. What they are doing is truly a beautiful thing.”

T

he dog days of summer are slowly coming to a close, and here at Kerrie Kelly Design Lab we’re counting down the days to when the region’s tree-lined streets are golden and pumpkin spice lattes are back on the coffeehouse menu. While we’re not hanging up our swimsuits just yet, September is the perfect time to start gradually transitioning your home. From cable knit throws and seasonal prints to autumn accessories, here are a few easy ways to prepare your home for fall.

1 / Warm Palettes and Prints Nothing inspires us more than a sundrenched space. If your room gets great natural light, use it! Frame your windows with curtains that you can draw should the space get too bright, and choose a fanciful overhead light like a chandelier if your office is go-getter-glam, a table lamp perched on your desk, or a floor lamp in the corner to highlight your accolades on the wall. 28 stylergbr.com - September 2016

2 / Cozy Textures We love sweater weather for so many reasons, especially for adding texture. Switch out lighter coverings for heavier ones, like a faux fur or nubby throw slung over an ottoman or bed. Cable knit isn’t limited to fashion, either—a few cable knit pillows are a cozy addition to any seating area.

3 / Autumn Accessories Accessories are an easy way to usher in a new season for every room. Switch out airy, beachy décor with nature-inspired art, deep-hued accessories and plush drapery. Full-bodied fragranced c a n d l e s co m p l e m e n t a ny mantelpiece with a warm glow and spicy scent. Replace brightly colored summer vases with ones that feature bronze or metallic accents.

4 / Outside In Use the season’s harvest to signal fall inside. We love filling our favorite wooden bowls with rusty red apples and golden pears. An oversized vessel or vase—like a vintage market find or an umbrella stand—makes a

that dresses up any table for the holidays. Tired of gourd-inspired centerpieces? Try clustering a few potted herb plants for a simple centerpiece.

My personal recommendation is to get a side of bacon; crispy and ultra smoky—the saltiness paired perfectly with the sweet toast. My husband opted to try something a little more daring: The chorizo Benedict. This Benedict variation boasted hearty polenta cakes topped with chorizo, rich avocado, poached eggs, spicy hollandaise and black bean salsa. The concoction was spicy enough to warm him up without venturing into “challengeworthy” territory. The plate also came with his choice of tater tots, fruit, cottage cheese or rosemary Parmesan home fries. He went with the latter, and they were wonderfully aromatic. Each plate was adorned with a bright purple edible flower, a cute finishing touch that we saw several people enjoying— even a little girl who decided that rather than eat her flower, she wanted to stick it in her hair. I’m not sure if I’ll consume my flower next time or wear it instead.

Chorizo Benedict

O

n a recent sleepy Saturday, my husband and I stopped by BarnBurner to find the small eatery packed with patrons. The décor is what you would call country chic—think large-grain wood and tin, a chalkboard wall, cheese grater light fixtures and a clever chandelier crafted from a ladder and an assortment of long-filament light bulbs. It all comes together in a way that’s bright and cute, and just a touch fashion-forward. The menu matches the ambiance, with a combination of classics like biscuits and gravy; and unusual offerings, such as the piña colada burger that’s topped with piña colada mix whipped into a slaw, jalapeño bacon and fresh pineapple. They even have a dog menu, featuring beef or scrambled eggs with bacon or sausage that pups can enjoy on the dog-friendly patio. (It wasn’t quite up and running when we stopped by, but I’m looking forward to it.) I stuck with a classic and ordered the sourdough French toast, which was

taste GARLIC-HERB SPAGHETTI SQUASH WITH LEMON Living the Mediterranean Diet by Nick Nigro and Bay Ewald with Rea Frey (Ulysses Press, 2015, $21.95)

• 1 large spaghetti squash
 • 1⁄4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
 • 3 large garlic cloves, minced
 • 2 tbsp. minced fresh basil • 1 tsp. fresh thyme leaves • 1 tsp. minced fresh oregano
 • 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice (about 1 small lemon)
 • 1⁄4 cup shaved ParmigianoReggiano • Black pepper Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Start by cutting the spaghetti squash in half. Spaghetti squash is notoriously difficult to cut, and there are numerous ways to do it. Some swear by placing it on the counter and hacking it in half with a sharp butcher knife. Others cut off both ends and slice the squash while it’s standing. We use a sharp serrated knife and take our time rocking the knife in and out, leaving the stem on so as to use the hollowed-out squash as a bowl. Regardless of how you get there, once your squash is in half, scoop out the seeds and discard them. Drizzle the inside with olive oil and season with sea salt and black pepper. Place skin-side up on a baking sheet, 62 stylergbr.com - September 2016

dinner date Food and Beer for the Season and bake in the oven for 35 minutes. Remove from the oven, flip the halves over so that the flesh can breathe, and let cool for about 15 minutes. Once cool, use a fork to scrape the squash strands out, as if scooping. Set aside on a large plate or flat surface. Heat the 1⁄4 cup olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic, basil, thyme, oregano, spaghetti squash and lemon juice. Sauté for about 10 minutes, or until the ingredients are fully incorporated. Remove from heat and garnish with black pepper and shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serves 4.

KNEE DEEP BREWING COMPANY WET WITTEE Knee Deep Brewing Company was one of the first Sacramento breweries to make a splash in the craft beer community. Although they tend to focus on IPAs, this 5.3-percent ABV Belgian-style white ale is just as satisfying as any of their award-winning, hop-forward IPAs. Well-balanced and very sessionable, with a lovely hazy-blonde hue, it holds a little bit of citrus zest, making it a perfect pairing with this month’s Garlic-Herb Spaghetti Squash with Lemon. Light and refreshing, the beer still holds complex and interesting flavors without taking away from the deliciousness of the delicate meal. —Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles Restaurant & Pub

The oblong spaghetti squash is a truly magical food. Often when we eat pasta, we feel the need to combat the carbs with lots of veggies or a lean meat. Spaghetti squash gives us the same pasta-type feel, yet we love to mix it with nothing but the beautiful simplicity of fresh herbs, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil. And of course, the Parmigiano-Reggiano is the final—and most important—ingredient to this lovely yellow treat.

68 stylergbr.com - September 2016

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Since my teenage years, I had dreamed of running my own company, but because my desire to help people through difficult times was stronger—and honestly came very easy to me—I became a licensed counselor, then a social worker, social strategist and coalition director. Today, my business combines the best of all of those experiences. I am an organizational development consultant who helps people, processes and systems navigate change. The key to making the change stick is through leadership excellence, so I support leaders to have the heart, mind and guts to make the change meaningful, purposeful and even exciting! How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I just moved here from the Chicagoland last August. I have already gotten involved with my children’s schools, and am currently looking to do some pro bono work with local organizations. I plan on being an active and contributing member to our region. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Firstly, my family—my husband and three sons are the most important people in my world. I’m always proud to be related to them and am excited to see how my boys impact our world; secondly, my foundation work focused on building partnerships with global leaders to bring about a Truth and Reconciliation Commission for post-genocide Rwanda. And finally, I’m very proud of the families I supported while they changed destructive behaviors throughout my social work career with Child Protection Services in Los Angeles. Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? Oprah Winfrey. She remains true to her own ideas and her own path. She’s a self-made woman who overcame a difficult past and helps others who are struggling. She gives back to our world freely, confidentially and generously. My goal is to do the same in all areas, or die trying! And finally, customer service is…? Treating clients like I would want to be treated.

Did you find your business, or did it find you? Ben Hoover Park Watch Report was the product of necessity. There was a divide between park management and the public, and it wasn’t until a group of park volunteers addressed the issue that it was solved. An incident occurred at a local park that resulted in multiple people being seriously injured and a horse being euthanized, because critical maintenance information had not been conveyed to park management. A group of eight women, mostly equestrians, pooled their money, hired a programmer and introduced a new website called Park Watch where information related to safety, maintenance and the environment could be reported electronically and received immediately by park management. Several California State Parks agreed to test the new format, and they liked it. The development rights to Park Watch were sold in 2014, the software was reprogramed, a phone app was added, and Park Watch Report was incorporated. Today, Park Watch Report has hundreds of parks that offer more than just reports. These parks specifically wanted maps, a calendar, alerts and park news available to park visitors at all times. A park that is not listed will still receive reports, and a park visitor can send a PARK WATCH REPORT, report from any park anywhere in the U.S., even if cell reception is minimal. I joined the company LLC in 2015 as the director of marketing. This job fits my personality and my passion for mountain Colfax, 530-878-4750 biking and the outdoors. In fact, my mountain bike is a critical marketing tool, as promoting ben@parkwatchreport.com Park Watch Report takes me to trails everywhere and introduces me to both safety issues and parkwatchreport.com environmental concerns frequently caused by that original disconnect between the public and park management. I am happy to offer a solution. What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? My first job was at a farm supply company. I learned what it means to offer genuine customer service. Where do you and your family go locally to have fun? When I was younger, we would spend time camping in Coloma on the American River. We took guided rafting trips, met other campers, looked for crawdads at night, and watched rafters try to make it through a set of rapids called Trouble Maker.

And when your dad happens to be Johnny Cash, well, you ask him to join you on this gorgeous reflection from 2003 about what it means to have a loved one in the autumn of their life. When the shadows lengthen And burn away the past They will fly me like an angel to A place where I can rest When this begins I’ll let you in September when it comes

1 / Earth, Wind & Fire, “September” 3 / Green Day, “Wake Me Up When September Ends” This beautiful, mournful ballad could be interpreted as someone recalling the end of a long-ago summer romance, but singer Billy Joe Armstrong actually wrote it about the death of his father when he was 10, as spelled out by the heart-wrenching lines. Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends Like my father’s come to pass 20 years has gone so fast Wake me up, when September ends

2 / Roseanne and Johnny Cash, “September When It Comes” For anyone with an aging parent, this one

Let’s end this playlist on a high note, shall we? The beat. The horns. Those falsetto “ba de yas”…this one gets you swaying like an autumn wind through the branches of a Lake Tahoe aspen grove. No month has ever had a better anthem. Say do you remember Dancin’ in September Never was a cloudy dayyyyyyyy.... It’s stuck in your head now, isn’t it? Mine too. If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna pop it on the stereo now and go rake some leaves.

ave you ever noticed how many songs there are about September? Seriously. Look it up. I stopped counting at 20. Maybe it’s as simple as September rhyming perfectly with “December” and “remember,” or maybe it’s because September is a fulcrum of sorts—the pivot point as summer turns to fall…the shorter days and longer shadows…the hint of a chill in the air. As we say goodbye to summer and all its joys—including, perhaps, a summer romance—and with looming gloom of winter ahead, songwriters, it seems, tend to get a little introspective. Melancholy, too—many of the songs deal with loss or impending loss. No matter. September has inspired some classic songs. Tony Bennett, “Maybe September.” Carole King, “It Might as Well Rain Until September.” Frank Sinatra, “September of My Years.” As you head out this month to hit Apple Hill, take in the fall colors of the Sierra, or if you’re just feeling a little introspective, here are five songs about September that should be on your playlist.
