SAVINGS GUIDE

L

et’s get this party started! It’s not a backyard summer bash without the barbecue. The strike of the match or punch of the igniter is followed by intensely intoxicating aromas of fire, smoke, meat caramelizing, veggies searing, fish crackling, tummies rumbling and smiles widening. The air is warm and the sun is slowly dropping. There’s a clanging of dishes inside as salads are being mixed and drinks poured. Laughter and conversations between friends and strangers fill any empty space, along with the squeals of children running about, some splashing in a nearby pool or lake. Life is good and love is in the air. In these times I adore everything: food, drink, “Barbecue the weather, the smell of may not be the air, friends, family, the road even the staring dog to world who steals food when peace, everyone is too busy but it’s a living in the moment to start.”— notice…or care. Anthony Summer is in full Bourdain sw ing and we must slow down to savor the long days we’re living; soon enough the sunlight will retreat to a shorter workweek and we’ll be longing for hot-off-the-grill corn on the cob, music festivals and swimsuits…well maybe not swimsuits, but you get the gist. So while we can, let’s celebrate! Speaking of celebrations, this month, hundreds of local people and places have reason to put on their party hats. Drum roll please…this month we announce the Style Readers’ Choice winners for local “people and places.” Check out the list of favorite folks and destinations—from medical professionals and fitness experts to bartenders, wineries, art galleries and more—that our region has to offer, and give congrats to all of the winners! Check back in September for “round two” of our annual Readers’ Choice Awards to see the area’s favorite “local businesses.” Until next month, slip another shrimp on the barbie, soak up your bountiful surroundings and raise a glass to winning. — Desiree

re you in the mood for a juicy burger or some fun finger foods? If so, the hunt ends at Buck & Sadie’s. With friendly service, TVs adorning the bar, and a menu brimming with American favorites—from burgers and fries to brews—it’s bound to become a neighborhood favorite in no time. On my last visit, I ordered the Bacon Me Love You—a must-try for all the bacon, and burger, lovers out there. Layered with applewood smoked bacon, battered onion rings, cheddar cheese, BBQ sauce and topped with a pickle, it was love at first bite. The meat itself was seasoned and cooked to perfection, while the bun was buttery and soft; paired with the flavorful fixins’, it was a burger for the books. My side of Truffle Fries—coated with Parmesan cheese and served with a yummy garlic aioli—was a perfect pairing. Be sure to save room for dessert, too—Buck & Sadie’s serves something called a Crownie that features a warm chocolate brownie crowned with a scoop of vanilla custard ice cream and toppings of your choice, from chocolate chips to Reese’s Pieces. Age of Rocklin’s oldest public building: St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church. Originally built in 1882-3, it has had a long and colorful history. It withstood fires at the turn of the 20th century; in 1933, the Great Depression saw the church close its doors; woodpeckers felled the steeple in 1937; it reopened after WWII only to fall into disrepair again in the 1980s; it was saved from near-demolition in the early 2000s and moved 300 yards to its current spot. Quite an adventure for a little church!

G

uitarist and singer-songwriter Ryder Green jams at local hotspots, rocking both covers— from the likes of Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jonny Lang—and originals. Sharpening his skills since childhood, the ambitious artist only began singing a few years ago, spur-of-the-moment, during a jam session. Since, Green has been writing his own songs, fronting his band and opening for Grammy-nominated blues artist Shemekia Copeland. “While there’s nothing easy about running my own business, it’s more than a full-time job,” states Green. “I get to do what I love for a career, [and] you couldn’t ask for much more than that.”

HLB: You picked up a guitar at six-and-a-half years old. What drew you to music? RG: I’d see others playing or hear them

above all I do it because I enjoy it and hope others will enjoy what I do too.

HLB: What are your favorite venues to perform at and what do you enjoy about the experience? RG: Folsom’s Powerhouse Pub, Antuzzi’s Newcastle Inn, The Club Car in Auburn and Hop House in El Dorado Hills. I’ve also had the chance to be on stage at San Francisco’s Biscuits & Blues—one of the Bay Area’s major blues clubs. I love performing because you’re really communicating with others by sharing your music and hopefully lifting their spirits.

HLB: Do you plan to stay local? RG: I know there will be lots of travel involved, and I’m looking forward to the adventure of sharing my music worldwide. This area will always be my home

base though. I started going to blues jams around here when I was 11—there have been so many people who’ve helped me and encouraged me to pursue my music.

HLB: What’s the best musical advice you’ve been given? RG: Being a career musician is basically running your own business—you have to treat it that way [at least] and remain modest but confident in whatever you’re doing. I’m fortunate to have parents who support my goals. They’ve never had the attitude that, “It’s too hard to make it as a musician,” but they’ve also made sure I understand that it’s not enough to be a good musician; you really have to understand all the business aspects of what you do, and always be on top of what’s happening in the industry.

on the radio, and I wanted to be part of it. About seven years ago, I started going to clubs and jams, learning a lot about performing. I played with people who were better than me, and I improved even more. I slowly achieved a following for myself and started performing occasional gigs.

HLB: Tell us about your original music. RG: Modern blues-rock with some old school blues. I also have influences of funk and rock and roll, but I’m definitely working to create my own unique sound, which will keep increasing as I continue writing.

HLB: What inspires you in your songwriting? RG: I do it if I’m happy, sad or angry… whatever emotion indicates that a good song could come from it. When I’m done, I want it to be something that makes [the viewer] feel good, regardless of the message. If someone can relate to what I wrote about, that’s a cool feeling, but

health&wellness What is it? Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. In of itself, blood (plasma) contains small, solid components— mainly red cells, white cells and platelets. Very important in the healing of injuries, hundreds of proteins called “growth factors” make up a person’s platelets. PRP is plasma with platelets added to it, so it has more platelets than blood alone. The

platelet-rich plasma Blood Can Heal by Janet Scherr

concentration of platelets—and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors—are five to 10 times greater (or richer) in PRP than in blood. PRP is developed for a patient from his or her own blood. The blood is drawn, the platelets are separated from other blood cells, and their concentration is increased during a spinning process; then the increased concentration of platelets is combined with the remaining blood to create a solution of platelet-rich plasma.

Why is it useful? PRP promotes tissue healing and regeneration. The increased concentration of growth factors in PRP can speed up the healing process of a damaged part of the body such as a torn ligament, tendon or meniscus. Dr. Michele Raithel, ND, at Revolutions Naturopathic explains that PRP works in the opposite way of a cortisone injection, an anti-inflammatory steroid that is administered for pain relief. Unlike cortisone, PRP not only helps to relieve pain, but it also stimulates the inflammatory response that triggers healing. “With PRP-injection therapy, I use ultrasound guidance for the placement,” 24 stylergbr.com - July 2016

Dr. Raithel says. “This allows me to fill the damaged area very specifically with exactly the right amount of PRP, which creates a sweet spot of healthy inflammation. PRP therapy is excellent for chronic pain and injuries that are not healing.”

What conditions does it treat? Dr. Raithel has successfully treated many patients—including athletes of all ages— with PRP injections. “Patients suffering from sports-induced, painful conditions such as tennis elbow, torn ligaments, meniscus tears and rotator cuff injuries can benefit greatly,” she says. “The PRP injections deliver high concentrations of the nutrients and cells used in the repair process of the injured site directly. It’s simple, effective and inexpensive when compared to surgery.”

While PRP has been used for a number of years in sports medicine, it also holds great promise for treating people with many types of spine and joint disorders. Gary Dunaye, PA, a pain management specialist at Cascade Medical Wellness Center, believes PRP will be used more extensively for reversal of chronic pain. “One of the most innovative and exciting ways that PRP is being utilized today is in the treatment of spinal arthritis and associated degenerative disc or joint disease,” says Dunaye. “PRP is a non-surgical treatment that is a relatively new option for relieving and even reversing pain for sufferers of these conditions.” Overall, the success of PRP therapy is still being measured; those considering treatment with PRP should check its eligibility with their health insurance carriers as well as their personal viability with their doctor.

T

hree years ago, instead of indulging in the typical conventions of retirement, Robert Beaudry, his wife, Sally, and their friend, Dick Paulsen, decided to start an impactful nonprofit. “You can look at the world and see that systems are failing,” says Robert, director of The Eternity Challenge (TEC). He wanted to teach people to lead successful, meaningful lives. In 2015, TEC employees and volunteers logged in 205,000 teaching hours at churches, Teen Challenge and prisons, including visits to the Placer County Jail and the Folsom Prison, deploying all the skills it takes to thrive upon release, including finance and career pathways. “California’s system has a recidivism rate of anywhere from 70-85 percent, which means that seven out of 10 are back in prison within three years. Our program’s success rate is at about 90 percent,” says Beaudry. “Senior members of the justice system notice [the inmates are] engaged [and] articulate. They understand the world,” Beaudry explains of prison and Department of Justice employees who sit in on the classes. 26 stylergbr.com - July 2016

TEC’s mission immediately expanded beyond teaching to fully support for major life changes, too; at present, they provide housing, life and career counseling, and either direct employment or help with finding a job. Twelve businesses operate in association with the nonprofit—including a mechanic shop, lawn maintenance and plumbing companies, a property management firm and a real estate brokerage—and employ people who come to TEC seeking help. “We think of ourselves as a stepping stone,” says Beaudry. The organization serves ex-cons, veterans, addicts and sextrafficked women. Currently, 20 rental houses, including two just for women, function as group living homes where people have a chance to reorient to life. “We’re a weigh station in their journey of life, and we love it when they leave successfully and move back in with their family, get married, or get a job.” Partnerships with many other nonprofit organizations regularly bring people ready for change. The Mighty Oaks Warrior program serves veterans, police officers and EMTs with PTSD. Michael Priddy, a

veteran graduate of the program, was hired by Beaudry to head an outpost in Rocklin, where he finds Northern California veterans to send to the weeklong Mighty Oaks program and then holds weekly meetings afterwards. Seven graduates of the program have received extensive aftercare from TEC, including counseling and employment in the Sacramento area. Priddy maintains that TEC gave him a completely new start in life. The challenges he faced returning from multiple deployments had destroyed his family. “TEC supporting me, mentoring me and loving me helped me to rebuild the relationship that I have with my children— something I never would have thought [possible],” he says. One man who Beaudry counselled closely was a murderer. “He was a gang banger who committed his initiation at

Marie Cano and Chelyssa Berglund

17 and was sentenced to life in prison,” explains Beaudry. “After six years in prison, he got down on his knees and said ‘God, I’ll change.’” While still in prison he earned two AA degrees, and upon later release was directed to TEC. Beaudry encouraged him to continue with his education. He’s now enrolled in William Jessup University and plans to start a nonprofit in East Los Angeles to keep youth out of gangs and combat recidivism.

homedesign height storage—to add visual interest without compromising accessibility.

3 / DO Add Plenty of Light One of our favorite ways to transform a bathroom is through lighting. By layering different types of lighting throughout, you can create a space that is both beautiful and functional. Built-in lighting in a vanity is helpful for morning and nighttime rituals, as well as for those with aging eyes and smaller children getting ready in the morning; while overhead lighting is key for illuminating the space to prevent spills and falls, and accent lighting helps round out the look with beautiful luminescence.

4 Dos and Don’ts by Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID

T

he latest trend in interior design has us completely rethinking the bathroom. Now that more and more families are looking to make investments and buy a home they want to grow old in, the way we design each room has become more thoughtful and intentional. A concept called livable design has taken over the interior design and architectural worlds, leading us to new and advanced means of decorating and configuring a space. Here are our top dos and don’ts in bathroom design, ultimately ensuring your space is a little more livable.

Whether you’re designing the space for yourself, your children or your parents, it’s always important to make every section of the bathroom super accessible. We love floating vanities or those with plenty of space underneath for wheelchair accessibility, or when a little one needs to use a stool to reach her toothbrush. Your vanity should also be accessible from all angles and incorporate designs that make it both aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Our go-tos? D-shaped handles and durable surfaces, for easy clean-ups paired with low-maintenance design.

1 / DO Make Everything Accessible

2 / DON’T Keep Storage Out of Reach This is a big one. Storage should be at the height of everyone in the home, including children and older family members. Vertical cabinets are best for stowing items that everyone should be able to access, like towels, first-aid kits and toiletries. Keep medicine stowed a little higher, or one step further, in a locked storage compartment. To create a luxe and livable vibe, mix different types of storage—think floating shelves, medicine cabinets and adjustable-

28 stylergbr.com - July 2016

While you may not think to add grab bars in the bathtub or zero-threshold in the bathroom entry, you will thank yourself in 20 years. When redesigning or updating your bathroom, we recommend thinking long-term. What are features that you would like to have in your space when you have children? What about when you’re retiring? Design elements like curbless showers and accessible sinks might not seem important now, but they can be a matter of livability down the road. Other design details to think about? Paint that’s easy to clean and can withstand fluxing temperatures, fixtures that won’t rust and surfaces that offer durability and lowmaintenance, no matter the mess.

Mimi Nassif Keller Williams/Luxury Division Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist Keller Williams Top Producing Real Estate Agents Roseville | 916-612-7772 www.mimiluxuryestates.com BRE# 01918236 "Inspiring," "workaholic" and "passionate" are words commonly used to describe Mimi Nassif, the prime realtor of the luxury estate market for KellerLuxury Division, who's had listings for former Sacramento Kings player Bobby Jackson and Taro Arai (the incredible sushi chef and owner of Mikuni), along with several other luxury estates throughout Placer, Sacramento and El Dorado Counties. Mimi has taken the luxury market to new heights and received several awards, including "Rookie of the Year" and being voted #1 Favorite Real Estate Agent by Style Magazine readers in 2013, 2014, 2015 and again in 2016. She was invited by Gary Keller, founder of Keller Williams, to speak in front of over 1,000 people about her success and passion for real estate. She's also been inducted into the Placer County Masters Club and become not only a Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist, but was also rewarded by the guild recognition for being one of the top producers in the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing. Mimi markets her listings

locally and globally, and knows that most of the luxury listings in the area are selling to Bay Area cash buyers (therefore marketing intensively to them) and that 35% of real estate transactions in the U.S. are selling to international buyers (thus her focus on global marketing). Her key to customer satisfaction and success is the positive attitude and tireless energy she brings to every client she works with, along with her dedication to making a positive impact in people's lives. Mimi has multiple degrees in business marketing, fashion design and a great eye for interior design. She pursued her career in real estate after finding out that her husband of six years at the time, Dr. Firas Nassif, was diagnosed with acute leukemia and given a few weeks to live. Her faith in God, the huge support from family and friends, along with the knowledge that her husband was a fighter, helped with his recovery process. Now, six years later, Dr. Nassif is cancer-free, and enjoying life, a challenging career and successful dental practice—all while raising their three beautiful children. Mimi is so grateful for all of her blessings and the success she has received in her real estate practice, along with the opportunity to give back to the community that has helped her in her career. Good things come to those who focus on the positive in life and take action, so when it comes to your next move—whether buying or selling—give Mimi a call. With her expertise and optimistic approach to real estate, you can count on her to deliver exceptional results.

7505 Wise Rd. | Auburn 530-823-1159 | LoneBuffaloVineyards.com “It’s the experience that matters” says Owner/Winemaker Phil Maddux. “We want you to feel right at home when you come for a tasting at Lone Buffalo. We not only pour the wines, but we talk to you about them - it’s what makes tasting interesting and fun!” Phil has been making wine for over forty years—a true passion that he loves to share with visitors. Maddux’s roots go back to Sonoma County in the 1970s where he learned to make wine alongside some industry greats. He kept it as a hobby until about ten years ago when he and wife Jill decided to go commercial after they planted a small vineyard on their property in South Auburn which produced five different varietals—their first commercial production was a mere 100 cases. Now, having outgrown that space, they operate the winery, tasting room and homestead on a twelve-acre parcel in North Auburn right in the middle of the Placer County Wine Trail and produce about 1,800 cases/year. “We still want to stay small enough where we can do everything ourselves,” says Phil, who not only enjoys the craft involved in winemaking, but also, the farming aspect of being a grape grower. Nowhere is the re-emergence of the winemaking tradition in Placer County more visible than at Lone Buffalo. EAT MEAT, DRINK BUFFALO! Open Fri-Sun 12-5pm

hen it comes to sushi, I’m a sucker for specialty rolls, so I was more than happy to try out the eclectic offerings at Hazumi Sushi Bar. Although at first glance, the menu seemed slightly intimidating—it’s quite extensive, and there are a few tricky words for the uninitiated—our server was quick to answer any q u e stions and ma ke recommendations. We s t a r t e d w i t h the Mushroom Bomb appetizer—a soft, earthy mushroom stuffed with spicy tuna (fair warning: the heat kicks in a little late), all deep-fried in a perfectly crispy tempura batter before being drizzled with a

touch of sweet teriyaki sauce. For entrées, we opted to go “family style‚” in order to try a little of everything. I ordered a bento box, which came with a miso soup starter, side of steamed rice, the traditional sectioned off plate filled with a hefty portion of teriyaki chicken, fresh salad topped with toasted sesame seeds and a light vinegary dressing, chewy gyoza that was perfectly browned, and a tempura tower of both veggies and shrimp. In the roll department, we chose both the Sacramento and the Popper. The Sacramento enveloped an enticing combo of crab and creamy avocado, topped with spicy tuna, paper-thin slices of sweet mango and green onion, with a

touch of creamy sauce. The appropriately named peppy “Popper” boasted zippy chopped jalapeños, spicy crab, spicy tuna, rich cream cheese and green onions— all battered, deep-fried and sliced. The process of frying turned the rice along the outer edge of the roll a bit chewy, resulting in a fantastically fun textural experience. Though dessert isn’t listed on the main menu, be sure to ask for the deep-fried Oreos—which get the same delectable tempura batter treatment before being served with a dollop of fresh whipped cream. Reminiscent of the tried-and-true versions you’ll find at the fair, I happened to prefer Hazumi’s version. Suffice it to say, I’ll likely be stopping by here rather than the midway this month.

This recipe hails from the San Domenico Palace Hotel in Taormina—the chef, Massimo Mantarro, was persuaded to jot down the bones of this recipe. I think you’ll agree that it’s simple and very tasty. • 3-1/2 oz. pancetta, smoked or unsmoked, diced • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 extra large egg • 2 tbsp. fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped • 1 thick slice of country-style bread, soaked in warm water for 10 minutes and squeezed dry • 1 lb. 10 oz. pork loin, cut into 12 thin slices • 2-inch squares of country bread • Approximately 36 fresh bay leaves • 7 tbsp. olive oil • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 6 skewers

KNEE DEEP BREAKING BUD IPA Knee Deep Brewing Company was founded in 2010 by brewmaster Jeremy Warren. From humble beginnings in Nevada, followed by a stint in Lincoln, the brewery has finally planted roots in a 28,000-square-foot facility in Auburn. With 14 year-round offerings—including the beloved Citra Pale Ale and Hoptologist DIPA—along with seasonal beers and special releases, visitors flock to their tasting room…sipping big, hoppy, West Coast-style suds while catching a glimpse of brewery operations (currently headed by Dean Roberts). Over the years, they’ve garnered multiple awards—quickly gaining a reputation for producing creatively brewed craft beers. Knee Deep Breaking Bud IPA features the typical bitterness and alcohol (6.7 percent ABV) of a classic IPA, with refreshing tropical fruit flavors, such as passion fruit and mango, plus aromas of Mosaic. Simcoe, CTZ, flaked wheat and a malt bill with a pinch of crystal malt are also in the mix, resulting in an easy-drinking beer that’s loaded with character, crispness and plenty of flavor complexity. When paired with the Grilled Herb-Stuffed Pork Skewers, it’s a mouthwatering match. —Richard Righton, Owner, 36 Handles Pub & Eatery

Put the pancetta, garlic, egg, parsley, bread and salt in a bowl and mix well. Gently pound the pork slices until uniformly thin. Spread each slice with a dollop of the pancetta mixture. Roll into cylinders and tie with kitchen string/twine. Preheat a grill/broiler or barbecue/outdoor grill and coat the grill rack with oil. Thread each of the skewers with 2 pork bundles separated by bread squares and fresh bay leaves. Arrange the skewers on a baking sheet, drizzle with oil and season well with salt and pepper. Grill/broil over medium heat for 10–15 minutes, turning so that all sides are cooked evenly. Serve at once. Serves 4–6.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? The business found me. I was staying at a lake house in Tennessee and enjoyed my first rest in a swinging day bed. I am not one to relax, but on that trip I spent the majority of the week lying in this bed—reading, talking and most of all relaxing. What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? I had a paper route in San Mateo. It taught me that no matter what, the job had to get done, every day, on time—no exceptions! Why is your staff the best in the business? We love building and take pride in everything that we create. Every Comfort Swing is hand built here from local California redwood—nothing is pre-fabricated overseas, and we don’t rush any job. What’s your biggest job perk? Our clients love our swings. We are essentially selling rest and relaxation, so it doesn’t get any better than that! What’s your favorite childhood memory? Tapping a maple tree for syrup. I grew up in Montreal, Canada, and my sister and I used to tap the trees then go back and eat the syrup with snow. If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why? Walt Disney. He always said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Bushnell Gardens Nursery in Granite Bay. They were kind enough to let me put a display unit in their shop. I also love all things gardening, and it’s a great place for anything gardenrelated. What is your opinion of Style Magazine? I love everything about the magazine. I’ve been reading it since I moved to the area five years ago. Since starting this business, I’ve dreamed of having one of our swings on the cover. Fingers crossed!

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Jennifer Kesler I design and make a line of custom organic baby products, which includes quilts, blankets and play mats. My business definitely found me. I was working as a graphic designer and thinking about starting a family. I was frustrated with the options in organic baby bedding and decided I could make custom products using my design background, so I went for it! What life accomplishments are you most proud of? I’m proud to have a degree from Cal Poly and to have had a career in graphic design. These days, I’m proud to have forged a path for myself and to create products for my customers that are beautiful and unique. What’s your hidden talent? I don’t know if it could be labeled a “talent,” but I’ve started playing the ukulele for fun. I’m not musically inclined, so it’s a big deal for me! Where do you and your family go locally to have fun? On most days we’re enjoying one of the many parks in Roseville. We also enjoy short PITTER PATTERNED hikes with our daughter on the local trails. Rocklin If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why? pitterpatterned.com I would love to have met M.C. Escher. His art is so complex and strange, compared to other artists of his time; the architectural qualities have always appealed to me, yet I could never get a feel for what he might have been like as a person. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? I love Bloom Coffee and Tea; my husband and I had our first date there seven years ago. And finally, customer service is…? Customer service is really listening to your customers and having compassion—putting yourself in their position—and responding with solutions and answers that put their needs first.

17 “Unofficial” Baseball Fan Etiquette Rules by Tom Mailey share them now, along with a few of my own and from friends, including my radio co-host Pat, who loves b a s e b a l l m o re th a n P a b l o Sandoval’s belt loves a day off. 1/Never get up during an at-bat for any reason, other than to cheer. Your braut, your beer, the bathroom...they all can wait. 2/If you’ve just gone out for one of the aforementioned reasons, wait for a break in the action before returning to your seat.

66 stylergbr.com - July 2016

11/At all costs, avoid swearing. C’mon. There are kids. 12/Speaking of swearing, please put your #%*$ cell phone away. 13/Don’t taunt, or worse, try to pick fights with fans cheering for the other team. All you’re doing is representing your team in the worst way possible. 14/Summarizing the four previous rules: Don’t be an obnoxious #ss.

4/Do not do “the wave.” And finally: 5/Especially do not try to start “the wave.” 6/Also, don’t try being a cheerleader. It’s great to be enthusiastic, but please direct all shouting toward the field of play and not me, seven rows back. I paid to watch a game, not get yelled at by you. 7/Not every hard hit ball in the air is “OUTTA HERE!” Make your predictions by watching the outfielders. If they look like they’re gonna make a catch, they probably will.

15/If you catch a foul ball, or a player tosses one into the stands and there is a kid nearby…strongly consider giving it to the kid. 16/If you have a kid at home you want to bring the ball back to, totally cool. We get it. So announce it loudly and hope the other fans believe you.

8/It’s okay to shout at the umpire. If a missed call at home warrants it, boo away. Remind him that you noticed he forgot his glasses. But don’t lose your mind. All you’ll do is risk a stroke, and anyway, ultimately...? Blue. Don’t. Care.

17/OK, fine. If you snag a home run ball, you can hang onto that one. The strongly principled may still seek out a young nearby fan to give it to...unless that ball was hit by, say, Buster Posey. Then it’s totally fine to say, “Sorry kid, get your own.” Hey, we can’t let them grow up just expecting everything to be handed to them.

9/Don’t repeatedly yell at a player at bat to “get a hit.” That is exactly what Josh Reddick is trying to do. Same with pitchers and throwing strikes.

I

was at a River Cats game recently and saw something that disturbed me. A player walking off the field made eye contact with a kid in the stands. The little guy was wearing a big, oversized mitt and since the player had a ball in his hand, he tossed it toward the kid. Suddenly, from a good five seats away, a middle-aged woman, armed with a glove of her own (and surprisingly quick reflexes) leapt up, got her mitt in front of the kid’s, and made the snag. My first thought: She just wanted to make sure he gets the ball. Uh-uh. She kept it. SHE KEPT THE BALL. Now, maybe she didn’t know any better, but to me—and several others nearby—it was a clear violation of proper baseball fan etiquette. So, I have labored a good...oh, a good 20 minutes now...researching what exactly i s c o n s i d e r e d p ro p e r fan etiquette at baseball games. And while there doesn’t seem to be one set of hard-and-fast “official” rules, there are several common denominators FOR MORE TOM’S TAKES, shared by the two or three VISIT STYLERGBR.COM. lists I painstakingly Googled WHAT’S COMING (including oneworldsports. NEXT MONTH? com and ESPN) while taking DON’T MISS STYLE’S a break from watching cat “PEOPLE & THEIR PETS” PICTORIAL! videos on YouTube. I will

3/Never wear the jersey of a team that’s not playing in the game. At a Dodgers-Giants game, nobody cares you’re an über-Marlins fan. The likely impression you’ll actually make? That you don’t know much about baseball, heard you were going to a game, and simply grabbed the first ballgame-y shirt you could find.

10/Cheer your guys with passion and jeer the other guys all you want. But, try to be creative. Shouting empty-headed epithets like, “Hey Kershaw, you SUCK!” is just lazy and sad. Heck, you don’t even have to shout: Think of all those genius Hunter Pence signs—”Hunter Pence Hoards Garden Gnomes”; “Hunter Pence Thinks Game of Thrones Is Just OK.” They are funny and get the message across that he’s in enemy territory.
