I remember being twentysomething and my parents gifting me with a “souvenir” from their trip to Seattle. Expecting a keychain o r m ay b e a mu g f ro m the original Starbucks, I unwrapped a neon pink T-shirt screen-printed with a skeleton sitting on a park bench; across the front were the words: Still Waiting For Mr. Right. You see, I always had an idea of the person I would marry—someone quirky, cultured and kind-hearted who came from a good family; someone who would sweep me off my feet, keep me on my toes and put me into silent-laugh mode—but this mystery

What’s the worst (or best) date you’ve ever been on? The best date I ever had was when my now husband and I went to Disneyland on our first Valentine‘s Day together. It was a surprise and lots of fun!—Kristen Back when we were first dating, my then boyfriend wanted to impress me, so he took me to a French restaurant and ordered beef bourguignon— only he pronounced it beef borginny. The waiter looked at him with such disdain. I never said anything to him about it—at least not until after we got married…35 years ago! We never went back to that restaurant; he stuck to places where he could say “burger and fries.”—Debra On a first (and last) date with someone I met online, I walked right by the guy because he looked nothing like his posted pics—not even if you squinted. Looks of course aren‘t everything, but honesty sure is!—Heather In college, I took a girl I really liked hiking. Cathy. Ostensibly, we were only going as friends, having several mutual friends between us, including Benjamin, who told me I was perfect for her. When we reached the top, there was a hiker registry. I put down my name and the date then stepped away while she went over to it. After, I went back to add a clever comment to mine, but stopped when I saw what she’d written: Her name, a plus sign and "Benjamin"—all written inside a big, fluffy heart.—Tom I went on a date with an old boyfriend years ago and was introducing him to my mom. During the whole dinner, he didn't ask her one question and barely said anything to her. It was at that point I knew he wasn’t worth dating!— Kourtney I met a guy in college who was “from Australia,” and we started dating. I was enamored with his accent and knowledge of didgeridoos, and he seemed nice enough— until we were out to dinner and he confessed to being born and raised in America. Between the lie and lack of an accent, he wasn’t as charming, and I said “g’bye, mate” immediately—Megan

Q&A WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Baron Stelling
Take organic chemistry. There’s a lot of science behind distilled spirits and in some of the techniques we use behind the bar, an understanding of organic chemistry really comes in handy.
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE?
Entitled and rude bartenders. Our job is to make people comfortable and happy; there’s no room for your ego in that.
ARE YOU HIGH OR LOW MAINTENANCE?
I would like to think I’m low maintenance, but my friends and family may say otherwise.
FAVORITE HUMANITARIAN CAUSE?
Doctors Without Borders. We’re so lucky to live in a country where having access to excellent medical care is the norm, and Doctors Without Borders helps provide some of that care to people and countries who need it the most. BEST WORDS OF WISDOM YOU’VE RECEIVED?
Showing up is half the battle.
Rocklin resident and bartender extraordinaire Baron Stelling may only be 29 years old, but he’s already making waves in the mixology world. His latest concoction, the Stag Savior, won him the National Restaurant Association’s “Star of the Bar” title, granted each year at their annual competition in Chicago. The cocktail—a mixture of Jägermeister, gin, lime juice, absinthe, and other fanciful ingredients—was inspired by the Jägermeister name, which means “hunting master” in German. “I wanted to tie in the brand’s history,” Stelling explains. It wasn’t until Stelling turned 21 that he discovered his passion for mixology. During a visit to a Williams-Sonoma store, he happened across a cocktail recipe book. Soon after, he began making cocktails for friends and family—though not always with success. “It took me a solid year to make a
10
margarita that tasted good,” he confesses. He also hit the books, researching the history of cocktail-making and rediscovering many longlost cocktails from the pre-Prohibition era. At the same time, he worked his way up the ranks, starting out as a barback before becoming a bartender in his own right. These days, he can be found shaking—or stirring—a variety of cocktails in Midtown Sacramento at The Shady Lady Saloon, Paragary’s Midtown, and The Jungle Bird. And although it’s often hard work, for Stelling, the ability to make his customers smile makes it all worthwhile. “I like making people happy,” he asserts, adding with a laugh, “and people seem to cheer up when they have a drink!” —Amber Foster

Trendy Trade Clothing Swap Trendy Trade Clothing Swap events were originally a way of bringing women together to have fun while doing good for other women in the community. It began in the Midwest in February 2011 before coming to Sacramento. The next local swap will be held on February 18 in the conference room at Origin Coffee and Tea, and is an event by women, for women (ages 18 and up). During the first 30 minutes (3:30-4 p.m.) attendees can grab a drink and snack and mingle with each other before the actual swap— where you can trade an unlimited number of items. Shoppers are asked to bring a minimum of five, up-to-date pieces to trade (pants, tops, jackets, dresses, purses, belts, accessories, etc.) with no stains or signs of wear. “One of my favorite parts is meeting new [people] and helping others. Wonderful things happen when you get a group of likeminded women together!” says Jamie Yates, founder of Trendy Trade Clothing Swap. Unclaimed items at the end of the swap will be donated to Acres of Hope in Auburn—a residential program that allows single mothers who might otherwise be homeless, stay for up to two years while they work to rebuild their lives. “Rotate your wardrobe for just $15—it’s a great deal!” says Yates. —Tara Mendanha

Ryan Hernandez Musically Masterful
by HEATHER L. BECKER
For multi-instrumentalist and Roseville resident Ryan Hernandez, helping to enhance the sound of other musicians is what he truly relishes. “My ultimate goal is to be what I call a ‘high-end sideman,’” shares Hernandez. “I’d be more than
22
content to be a hired gun for someone who’s an established singersongwriter and needs someone to help add color to their sound.” As a child, Hernandez would harmonize with his mother—a talented songwriter and pianist—and discovered his first love: the drums. photos by DANTE FONTANA

Later, he picked up the guitar, piano, violin, mandolin, ukulele, banjo and most recently, the pedal steel—quite an impressive arsenal of instruments for the 32-year-old musician who regularly plays at various venues around the region, including Black Vinyl Ale Project, Thunder Valley Casino Resort, GB Alehouse and Restaurant, Strikes Unlimited, and The Firehouse Restaurant. HLB: WHEN CREATING SONGS, WHAT INSPIRES YOU? RH: I work with a lot of songwriters, and the things I br ing to the table are based more around the melodies and instrumentation. I wouldn’t call myself a great lyricist, but I try to convey some type of feeling through the sound. The lack of sound is also important; space in a song can be just as musical. HLB: DO YOU PREFER STUDIO TIME OR PERFORMING LIVE? RH: I am definitely more of a live musician, but I do enjoy recording music in the studio. One thing I’m good at is listening to what someone wants and creating that sound for them, either instrumentally or vocally. When you get hired to do studio work, time is money, and you want to give a client what they want in a timely fashion. Live music is much more relaxing for me. HLB: IF NOT A MUSICIAN, WHAT WOULD YOU BE? RH: At one point I was interested in becoming an EMT but then I remembered blood was involved. I think because I have a great deal of patience, maybe a teacher of some kind. I gave lessons before, and I think that might be something I get back into later in life. HLB: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING MUSICIANS? RH: Get an education, and [make sure it includes] a class on music theory. Also, you can pretty much learn how to play anything online these days, which are resources I wish I had when I was a kid. The number one thing is to put the time into your instrument. Practice as much as possible, and get as good as you can at your craft. Put yourself out there—whether it’s via open mic nights or charity work—and get your foot in the door. Hang around other musicians who are much better than you; surround yourself with good-hearted, talented people.
artbeat
HLB: WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE? Through February 24 RH: I grew up here and have been playing for – Art in Public Places Lincoln-based digital over 10 years and can honestly say the music artist and illustrator scene has gotten better and better. There’s Linda Marchus is showcasing her a really tight music community here. I have colorful, complex creations at the friends who moved to Los Angeles, but I don’t Roseville Civic Center, think that’s something I’ll ever do. There sited at 311 Vernon Street. bluelinearts. you’re a small fish in a big pond and everyone org/current-exhibits is good, so it’s hard to compete. That’s why it’s always better to work together; not to mention, the Internet is a huge way to network. I don’t think you have to be in one particular location in order to get your music out there. ryanhernandezmusic.net

Let’s Get Physical by KOURTNEY JASON
Turn on Marvin Gaye because it’s time to get it on.* We all know sex is a fun form of exercise and can reduce stress, improve your mood and lower blood pressure; but fortunately for you, that’s not where the health benefits end. Here, our experts divulge the naughty truth.
1
A Healthy Heart
According to Karla Alberts, ND, at Revolutions Naturopathic in Folsom, “There are a plethora of physical and protective benefits to reap from this innate act of love. Heart health is much improved from a more optimized balance in hormones, a decrease in systemic inflammation, and a lowering of blood pressure.”
2
Fight the Flu
“Research has shown that those who engage in more frequent intercourse have stronger immune systems,” Alberts says. Thanks to increased levels of immunoglobin A, you’ll be better equipped to fight off germs and prevent illness.

Deeper Sleep
Nichole Tyson, MD, OB/GYN at Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center, and an expert in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, says that in addition to reducing pain and relieving headaches, sex also aids in improving sleep. After sex, prolactin—a relaxation-inducing hormone— is released, which can help with a more restful slumber.
4
Live Longer
“A Welsh study that followed 918 men aged 4559 for 10 years found that those who had two or more orgasms per week had 50 percent fewer instances of mortality than those who had low or no incidence of sexual activity,” Tyson says. “A similar study followed 252 people in North Carolina for 25 years. At follow-up, men who reported having frequent intercourse lived

significantly longer than those who didn’t. Research like this is done more often on men because [their incidence of heart disease] is higher. One study on women did find that those who reported enjoying their sexual encounters over the years lived longer than females who didn’t.”
5
Look and Feel Better
“Some other, smaller studies have shown [having sex] helps in these areas: looking younger, stronger mu s c l e t o n e, i m p rov e d memory, chronic pain relief, increased immune markers, and reduced prostate cancer,” Tyson says.

Improves Empathy
Je n n i f e r B a l l e r i n i , PsyD, a licensed psychologist and couple’s therapist at LifeWork Psychotherapy Center in Fair Oaks, says having sex helps increase levels of the hormone oxytocin, “which researchers call ‘the cuddle hormone’ and promotes closeness and bonding between partners, leaves you calm and blissful, and reduces signs of anxiety and depression by suppressing the stress hormone cortisol...Oxytocin also improves empathy, helps us stay faithful to our partners (and keep our distance from attractive folks who aren’t our partners), helps sleep, fosters generosity, crystallizes fond memories, reduces drug cravings, and lots of other good stuff.”

A Better Relationship
Good sex deepens a strong bond, and a strong bond takes sex to another level, Ballerini says. “Sex, like empathy and attentiveness, is one of the most important aspects of a happy, healthy relationship,” she says. “A lot of us fear getting tired of the same partner for years at a time, but if the emotional connection is there, we never grow numb to the sexual spark we feel with our sweethearts. In short, how we connect sexually is how we connect emotionally. So, if you want great sex, work at building a great relationship!” *All of these experts remind you to love responsibly.

Roseville Historical Society’s Carnegie Museum Discovering the Past in the Present
by JANET SCHERR
Let’s see a show of hands: Who knows what group of people were the first inhabitants of Roseville? If your hand isn’t raised, it’s time to learn more about the history of this great city. The Nisenan were the Native Americans who thrived on the land, now known as Roseville, for over 2,000 years. Discover this and much more at the newly renovated and reopened Carnegie Museum, Roseville’s first permanent history museum that now boasts new displays and collections. Originally built in 1912 as the Carnegie Library, it operated for 70 years until the city

constructed the current main library. When the Carnegie Library closed in the mid-1980s and the worn-out building was slated to be demolished, some concerned citizens formed the Roseville Historical Society (RHS) to revive the old building as a history museum. “After many fund-raisers conducted by enthusiastic supporters, the old library was brought back to its former glory,” says Christina Richter, current president of RHS. “In total, the renovations took about five years, and the museum doors opened in early 1988. It’s operated as a history museum since that time, and in 2012 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places for its centennial birthday.” Thanks to the diligence of the RHS, the museum has maintained its significance and integrity. Guidance has also come from its new curator—who has over 25 years of experience—Sharalee Falzerano. Richter became involved with RHS about 10 years ago, as she was researching the history of the pioneering Fiddyment family. “I remember the first day walking into the Carnegie building and feeling an overwhelming sense of nostalgia,” she recalls. “My hometown library in Ohio was also a Carnegie building, and it felt a little like being a happy child in my beloved library once again. NEW TO THE COMMUNITY research I also became enamored with Roseville’s history and wanted to be involved in any way I could to ensure our community’s history was preserved.” Visitors and residents alike have enjoyed the Carnegie Museum’s benefits. It offers well-documented archives that provide valuable research opportunities, including over 100 years of book-bound Roseville Press Tribune newspapers. Richter describes two recent instances in which families discovered priceless information about their ancestors. “Our research sources aided a Japanese family in connecting with their 1920 Roseville ancestors,” she explains. “During the holidays, a gentleman who lives in Carmel paid a visit to the museum. His ancestors go back three generations in Roseville, and he found valuable information in our funeral records...{discovering] important facts about his family that he would not otherwise have known.” This spring, RHS is launching a program designed to bring students in from local schools for specialized tours of the museum; in October, they’ll host their annual fund-raiser, slated to be at Sierra View Country Club and planned as a 1950s murder-mystery mafia wedding. Adds Richter, “With the renovation of the museum and new activities planned, [we’re also] looking for more volunteers.” rosevillehistorical.org

ARCHITECTURE
ARCHITECT: Dave Piches
Piches Architecture architecturebypiches.com This full-service, award-winning architectural design firm in Roseville specializes in residential, commercial and community projects.
MODERN GRECIAN
ARCHITECT: Dave Piches LOCATION: Rocklin YEAR BUILT: 1995 SIZE: 2,200 Square Feet; 3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms
STYLE & INSPIRATION: This Greek-inspired home was a new build. While the owners’ tastes were modern, they wanted a home that would feel comfortable in a traditionally styled neighborhood. Architect Dave Piches took inspiration from the white, cleanlined homes in Greece to create a residence that blends modern and traditional styling. Sited on a crest above the Sunset Whitney area of Rocklin, it has cascading planters at the front, and a stunning, intimate rear pool and patio that overlooks a South-facing view of Sacramento. AMENITIES: Piches focused on a “careful use of proportion and symmetry”
in creating this simple and elegant home. Quality materials and an attention to detail prevailed, with special touches like wood-clad windows and a custom-built shiny black entry door. photo of Dave Piches by DANTE FONTANA Modern Grecian home photos by PICHES

The craftsman style can even be seen in the master bath, which features an open shower arranged around a circular tile mosaic column. “The interior was completely reconfigured,” says Piches, noting the garage and utility areas became a large recreation room and office.
STYLE & INSPIRATION: This Loomis residence underwent a complete remodel—transforming from a 1980s Victorian into a craftsman. The job required quality materials and an attention to detail, resulting in a polished home that includes authentic touches like real stacked

STYLISH BARN VERNACULAR ARCHITECT: Dave Piches LOCATION: Penryn YEAR BUILT: 2015
SIZE: 3,000 Square Feet; 3 Bedrooms,
2 Bathrooms
STYLE & INSPIRATION: This addition and remodel
was built for a homeowner who had memories of living in Europe as a child. He loved the verticality of the castle spaces and wanted to add a tower to his one-story home. “Our challenge was to design an addition with a tower that would be appropriate in the setting of the bucolic Placer foothills, while blending easily with the one-story proportions of the existing home,” says Piches, explaining that the resulting “barn-inspired tower structure” steps down to the existing lower one-story roof with board and batt siding and a metal roof, which brings continuity to the new and existing parts of the home. The new entry features a stone-walled courtyard, which boasts an outdoor fireplace and sitting area.
AMENITIES: The home includes a great room, a new recreation room, a gym, a main floor library and a home office in the tower.

FARMHOUSE COTTAGE
BUILDING DESIGNERS: Wesley Boswell and Sandra Booher LOCATION: Camino YEAR BUILT: 2015 SIZE: 3,200 Square Feet; 2 Bedrooms, 2.5 Bathrooms
STYLE & INSPIRATION: This farmhouse-style home was designed
for a Bay Area couple looking to retire in the foothills and make it their forever home. The custom design features a main level living space with no steps at the entry door, and a same level work studio and shop space below for the couple’s businesses. Designed to work with the property’s sloping lot, the great room has 17-foot ceilings and large glass doors and windows on both sides to showcase views of very tall pine trees; a large interior vaulted ceiling boasts full span wood beams. The property also features a beautiful local view and a large vineyard off the master bedroom suite. Since the owner enjoys gardening, Booher and Boswell installed underground water tanks to catch winter rainwater, which can be used for the gardens in spring and summer. The homeowners have additional plans to build a deck with an exercise pool off the rear and install an elevator in the studio above the shop.
AMENITIES: The master bedroom suite includes an adjacent office space and a large walk-in closet with a pull-down ladder to a large attic space that’s sealed and insulated. The bathroom features a walk-in shower with no step-in and heated floors using wall controls (complete with temperature and timer gauges). The wellinsulated home was built to keep a constant temperature during winter and summer. There are two covered decks, a covered porch and a detached two-car garage. There’s also an automatic power generator in case of a power outage. photo of Wesley Bosell and Sandra Booher by DANTE FONTANA home photos by WESLEY BOSWELL PHOTOGRAPHY

The kitchen has impressive qualities including shelving instead of upper cabinets, tall glass-front display cabinets for special glassware and dishes, and an extra-large pantry for storage. The master bedroom suite has his and her walk-in closets. The bathroom’s walk-in shower has a bench seat and shampoo niche, with two showerheads and a full glass front. There’s also a freestanding tub and an eight-foot-long vanity that has plenty of drawers for storage. The residence even includes a “kids’ wing,” which is comprised of three bedrooms and an adjacent bonus playroom, including a flat-screen TV and a Jack and Jill bathroom that exits to the future pool area; a three-car garage with a pulldown ladder to finished attic storage; and a 600-square-foot covered patio with stucco arches that leads out to the future pool and entertainment areas.

CONTEMPORARY MISSION
ARCHITECT: David Wright LOCATION: Auburn YEAR BUILT: 2007 SIZE: 4,380 Square Feet + 1,800
Square-Foot Garage/Shop; 3 Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms STYLE & INSPIRATION: Built on a suburban country site outside of Auburn, this modern mission-style home features a passive solar design, and was built using structural insulated panel (SIP) walls and roof structure. Wright explains the design is a “contemporary adaptation of the early California adobe-style architecture with some Santa Fe-style overtones.” The one-level home has mission clay tile roofing and a stucco exterior, as well as exposed wood beams and paneled ceilings, terracotta tile floors and hand-textured plaster walls throughout. Wright says the owner is currently planning a separate guesthouse, garage/shop building and solar electric power.
LUXURY MOUNTAIN
ARCHITECT: David Wright LOCATION: Pollock Pines YEAR BUILT: 2011 SIZE: 2,500 Square Feet; 2 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms
AMENITIES: All rooms have views of Folsom Lake. The living, family and dining rooms and kitchen area open onto the entertainment terrace patio, infinity swimming pool and spa. The terrace patio cabana is outfitted with a fireplace, pool bath and pool equipment; the master suite near the garage mudroom includes the laundry, a master bath, large bedroom, wardrobe and a small retreat study; while the family and guest bedrooms, located on the opposite side of the living zone, each have a private bath. There’s a dramatic wood circular staircase leading to an upper level “crow’s nest” man cave, which has a toilet, bar and balcony patio.
STYLE & INSPIRATION: This residence is situated on a steep rural site overlooking the south side of the South Fork of the American River, an area heavily wooded with pine, fir and cedar forest. Built in modern international-style architecture, the three-story home is an efficient structural module that uses structural-insulated panels (SIPs). The house also has a rooftop entertainment terrace, which minimizes its footprint on a steep mountain hillside. The owners are audiophiles, so the two-story interior living volume is acoustically tuned and balanced. Since the owner is a zip line enthusiast, there are two separate zip lines along the mountain hillside. AMENITIES: A four-story elevator allows easy access for all to each level. Home details include a tiled rooftop view entertainment terrace, complete with a rooftop spa, barbecue, fireplace and an outdoor dining area. Extensive glass windows maximize the view and reflect the stunning surrounding forest. “The exterior materials are designed to be fireproof, low maintenance and durable in snowy, freezing conditions,” says Wright, noting the home can easily be heated with the fireplace—blending “charm and efficiency.” The outside boasts low-maintenance, high durability cement/wood fiber, horizontal lap siding and vertical corrugated “corten” (a rustfinished sheet metal). LUXURY MOUNTAIN (CONT. FROM PG. 39)

Foot Garage/Shop and 2,500-SquareFoot RV Garage/Bunkhouse; 3 Bedrooms, 5 Bathrooms STYLE & INSPIRATION: This one-level home is patterned after the traditional Australian ranch-style architecture and has a covered porch with log columns, wood beams and a corrugated roof. Keeping with the rugged Australian outback theme, the exterior walls are finished in rustic stone with stucco. Wright says the home is “suitable to the hot summers and cold winters of the Sierra Nevada foothills” and fits well into the ranch house subdivision environment. Design wise, the inside features exposed wood beams and ceilings and cabinetry that complements the natural materials on the outside. He says the owners insisted on passive solar design and water conserving features. The result? “A house for all seasons.” AMENITIES: Since the home is environmentally friendly, it’s laid out to optimize passive solar heating and cooling and designed for high-energy efficiency. The roof and walls are constructed of structural-insulated panels (SIPs); in addition, there are rooftop evaporative cooling towers, radiant heated floors, solar electric power and high efficiency appliances. Other green features include water catchment and storage, PV solar electric, evaporative cooling towers and water conserving landscaping. The living and sleeping areas surround and open onto the central “U”shaped courtyard, which has a swimming pool, spa and entertainment patio area. The open end of the courtyard overlooks a heritage oak tree view. The house, which incorporates security systems and safe rooms, also includes a separate RV garage, as well as a bathroom and guest bunkhouse. photos by AARON ROSELI

Opposite Page: Prime Rib French Dip and Fuji Apple Salad Top: Short Rib Pasta Below: Risotto Fritters
Longtime El Dorado Hills favorite, Sienna—sited where its predecessor
…coupled with the tenderness of the prime rib, horseradish aioli, warm au jus and soft, aromatic, herbed roll—[it] made for one of the better French dips I’ve ever had.
Crush 29 once took up residence—opened last September, and has been garnering fans ever since. Owners Mark and Karoline Platt have created a warm and welcoming, well-designed establishment that features thoughtfully executed, contemporary dishes. My companion and I were seated in the “Saffron Room,” adjacent to the main dining floor, as an afternoon fire radiated from the stone fireplace on a damp, chilly, comfort food kind of day. The chef’s version of arancini (breaded and fried risotto balls), in this case called Risotto Fritters, were perfectly crispy outside with a creamy interior that maintained the integrity of the rice—not a simple execution—resulting in a welcome cold weather starter. Next came the Fuji Apple Salad, which we chose not because apples, blue cheese and candied pecans are always a winning combo in salads (they are), but HOURS: 10 a.m.-10 because of the accompanying gorgonzola p.m. (Sunday); 11 a.m.-10 p.m. (Monday through cheese puffs. What followed were light Wednesday); 11 a.m.-11 p.m. and airy orbs, known as gougeres in France; (Thursday and Friday); 10 a.m.-11 p.m. (Saturday) cheese puffs in English. Needless to say, they were delicious. TRY THIS: Risotto Fritters; Short Rib Pasta; Grilled We followed the salad with their Prime USDA Prime Rib Skirt Steak Rib French Dip. I’m always hesitant to order this, even more so when the words “prime rib” precede the French dip part. Too often the fat-to-meat ALCOHOL: Full bar; beer, wine and craft cocktails quotient favors the fat, but somehow the inverse equation was true, as there was nearly zero offending oleaginous material. The latter—coupled with the TAB: $$ tenderness of the prime rib, horseradish aioli, warm au jus and soft, aromatic, HEADS-UP: Brunch and herbed roll—made for one of the better French dips I’ve ever had. bottomless mimosas are served on weekends from If I see the words “short rib” on most any menu, it’s a forgone conclusion 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; four unique that the item will end up on a plate in front of me. Sienna’s Short Rib Pasta private dining rooms; weekly “Fitness Special” was reminiscent of beef bourguignon and featured short ribs braised in ale (450 calories or less) (instead of wine), with cippolini onions, sliced mushrooms, and one of my favorite pasta, campanelle. It was a fitting end to an upscale, homey food kinda day. Sienna Restaurant 1480 Eureka Road, Roseville 916-771-4700, siennarestaurants.com

Their repertoire ranged from blues and country to swing and Latin rhythms, and the bobbing heads and tapping feet in the audience were a testament to how good they really were. To accompany the infectious tunes, I ordered a baked Chimichanga, which came with a salad plus chips, salsa and sour cream, and a Hot Chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream. The chicken filling in the chimichanga had a sweet, smoky flavor that intensified with every bite, and the fact that it was baked and not deep-fried allowed me to indulge guilt-free in my decadent hot chocolate. As I warmed my hands around the hot mug, others stayed warm by dancing to the tunes of Elvis and Chuck Berry and downing a beer or three—good times and good spirits were in abundance. This place is a real gem; with so much talent on display and carefully prepared, delicious food, you’d be missing out if you didn’t drop by. DARK CHOCOLATE CAKE + RED WINE SYRUP Do you need a girlfriend to drink and eat wine with? Yes, I said “eat.” This chocolate cake has a pronounced wine flavor (but not too much), and the sweet red wine syrup on top is just, well, the icing on the cake. Plus, it’s an excellent way to use the dark cocoa powder in your pantry. While I love this dark chocolate cake with its subtle wine flavor, I love the red wine syrup the most. I’m already dreaming up new ways to use it. Would my morning bowl of oatmeal be acceptable? Please say yes. FOR THE CAKE 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup granulated sugar 5 tbsp. dark cocoa powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. fine sea salt 1 large egg
1/3 cup neutral oil 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/3 cup red wine FOR THE RED WINE SYRUP 3/4 cup red wine 2 tbsp. granulated sugar
P r e h e a t t h e ov e n t o 350-degrees Fahrenheit and line a six-inch cake pan with a small circle of parchment paper. Spray the exposed sides of the pan with cooking spray. Sweet & Simple: In a small bowl, Desserts for Two whisk together the flour, by Christina Lane sugar, cocoa powder, (Countryman baking soda and salt. Pour the batter into the pan and bake on a baking sheet for 30 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out mostly clean, with a few crumbs clinging to it. If you underbake the cake, it will sink as it cools. Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, make the wine syrup: Combine the wine and sugar in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil until reduced to two or three tablespoons, about 15 minutes. Remove the cake from the pan and place on a serving plate. Slice and serve with the red wine syrup drizzled on top. This month, Style staffers tested out two offerings from West Sacramento’s Strad Meadery. Founded in 2011, they use honey to facilitate the fermentation process and create four different varieties of “mead”—thought to be the oldest alcoholic drink known to man. For more info, visit stradmead.com.
Nectar Mead
ABV: 7.5% OVERALL RATING: 3 TASTING NOTES: Mild and sweet flavor, almost like sparkling apple juice; slightly bubbly and tart; would be a great dessert wine; light, easy to drink; smells like champagne with a hint of honey PRICE: $14.99 PURCHASE: Whole Foods Market
Strad Meadery Pomegranate Nectar Mead ABV: 7.5% OVERALL RATING: 4 TASTING NOTES: Light, crisp and refreshing; beautiful orangish-red color that’s reminiscent of rosé; easy to drink; a lovely halfway point between a cider and white wine; mildly sweet for a honey wine and not too acidic on the finish PRICE: $14.99 PURCHASE: Whole Foods Market
OVERALL RATING is the average score (out of 5) compiled by Style staff tasters. Ratings should should be taken with a grain of salt, as we are by no means “experts”—just hard-working employees who enjoy imbibing.

AMADOR BREWING COMPANY’S NIGHT HIKE PORTER ABV: 7.3% IBU: 46
Pairing beer and dessert is still quite unusual for some, but Amador Brewing Company’s Night Hike Porter is one of my favorites and may change your mind. It’s a mix between an American and Baltic porter, giving it a slightly roasted flavor with hints of dark fruit. Topped with a minty hop character, notes of citrus and an extremely clean finish, it doesn’t overpower the richness of this delectable dessert.—Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles Restaurant & Pub

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
A little of both really! We’ve always loved reclaimed goods, vintage treasures and farmhouse décor. Starting R14 was a way for us to take a hobby to the next level. From there, the farmhouse craze hit and the rest was history. We are in it for the long haul now.
Closed Loop is a different kind of digital agency. Our focus is on driving business results through enterprise-level digital advertising, experience design and user research services. Since its inception in 2001, we’ve helped a wide range of brands—from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies—achieve massive growth with our customer-centric approach. Clients like PayPal, Tableau Software, Crate and Barrel, StubHub, Facebook, Intel, and Quicken Loans have all benefited from our work. The business found me and has grown organically over time by finding spots where there was market demand for areas we’re passionate about.
How are you involved with both the community and your customer? To be successful, you have to know your customer, and for us that means reaching out to the local community and surrounding areas. Attending community events, supporting local businesses and antique fairs, and engaging with customers throughout the U.S. on social media doesn’t feel like a “job” to us. These folks are our extended community and have become friends.
Why is your staff the best in the business? The crew at R14 understands the importance of customer experience. Whether it’s online browsing and scrolling through social media, or simple communication for a custom order—you’ll notice consistent touchpoints that enhance the customer experience. Handwritten notes, immediate response times, positive engagement and transparency— folks appreciate these things! People will always remember how you make them feel.
What life accomplishments are you most proud of? We both have little ones—Annabelle and Mason—who are spunky with big personalities, just like their mamas.
How are you involved with both the community and your customer? We support the Children’s Receiving Home of Sacramento with our time and money, and also let our employees donate company funds to charities of their choice. What’s more, employees receive paid time off for charitable work. At a global level, we support Kiva and the Heifer Project.
What life accomplishments are you most proud of? First, marrying "up"—my wife's love, support and guidance has made for a richer and more meaningful life than I could've imagined. Second, raising three great kids—good, kind human beings—who I not only love, but like as well. And third, building a company. It hasn't always been easy, but it's enabled an amazing level of freedom and personal growth.
What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?
What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?
They serve a mean latte and house-made scone at the High Hand Nursery and Cafe. Their pizzas are pretty dang good, too!
Joe Caribe in Auburn. The food is incredibly original and delicious, the atmosphere is funky and cool, and they always have great beer.
What’s your favorite local business other than your own?
And finally, customer service is…?
We love Flower Farm Café.
Making our clients look like rock stars. We want to make sure they get all the credit for our work. Helping them succeed is our biggest reward.
And finally, customer service is…? It’s simple—be kind, friendly and honest with folks.

Know Thy Neighbor Conversing to Create Community
I went to a memorial recently. It was for a neighbor. He lived at the end of our street for years. Craig. An ironworker. Nice guy. Divorced. Lived by himself. When he first moved in, we talked regularly, mostly about what country concerts were coming up or fishing, which he loved to do. I told him we’d go out in my boat sometime. But, we never did. And in late November he passed away. I knew he’d gotten hurt on Catch Tom on the Pat and Tom Morning the job a few years ago and wasn’t working Show on New anymore. I knew he’d become reclusive. I Country 105.1, email him at tnvmailey@ hadn’t see much of him the last two years gmail.com, or follow him on Twitter or so. But it was a shock. He was only 57. @kncitom. At the memorial, I learned more about Craig than I had in the 12 years he’d lived WHAT’S COMING NEXT MONTH? not 25 yards away. He grew up in Chico, Don’t miss Style’s “Flavor Town: 25+ was a high school football and baseball Local Eats and player. Quite a stud, when he was younger. Drinks.” Great storyteller...funny...likable—that was a word used over and over. So likable.

Nicest guy you’d ever want to know. He loved NASCAR and the Miami Dolphins. I learned that, as an ironworker, pretty much any Motel 6 with a stairway built in the past 30 years in Northern California was worked on by Craig, and he was quite proud of that. He loved his kids—you could see that in onscreen images that flashed during a tribute. He loved his friends—you could see that by the number of them in attendance. Heck, two ex-wives and an ex-girlfriend were there. Likeable. I learned the reason he became more withdrawn was a struggle with alcohol, which was exacerbated by his injury. Ultimately, both played a part in his passing. I feel like if I’d made an effort to get to know him better, to be a better neighbor, that maybe, in some way, a difference could have been made…? I don’t know. But I wish I had. A few years before all this, another neighbor passed away. Yvonne. An elderly but spry, tiny little white-haired lady originally from France. She lived one house over. She had a delightful singsong accent and never failed to greet you with a smile and hello as she went for one of her daily walks. She kept cookies by her door for the neighbor kids. We attended the same church, and if we weren’t there on a given Sunday, she’d ask where we were. She kept her yard immaculate and drove a sweet late model sky-blue Toyota Avalon all over Roseville. I always wanted to invite her over—she grew up in France during World War II. My dad served there. I wanted to share some of his stories, and hear hers. I never did. But I wish I had. At her memorial, I learned she was part of the French Resistance, that she helped Jews and others in danger from Nazi occupation escape via an underground railroad of sorts. She was a courier, riding her bike past enemy soldiers with baskets full of groceries. Missives and messages were hidden in the groceries; the soldiers never suspected that a young teenage girl could be so bold or so brave. She never got caught. She was a badass. We are all so much more than we appear on the surface. We all have stories. And in this day and age, when it’s easier than ever to metaphorically pull into our collective garages and close the door behind us, I think it’s important to remember that. It’s on all of us to reach out to each other, to go beyond just waving hello or making small talk. To really get to know one another. Because we’re all neighbors. It’s worth a try.
