Timing, teamwork, and technology saved my life. Meet Iwan van der Schoor – husband, father, expert skydiver and photographer. Following a hard water landing during a Fourth of July jump, Iwan was taken to a local hospital with five broken ribs and a life-threatening rupture in his aorta. Once stabilized, doctors rushed him by air ambulance to the level I trauma center at UC Davis – where the trauma team assembled to assist as vascular surgeons performed a minimally invasive aortic repair. Weeks later, with his doctor’s permission – and that of his wife – Iwan is raring to get back in the air.

Since receiving its initial accreditation in 2004, Folsom Lake College has provided exceptional educational opportunities to the growing communities of eastern Sacramento and western El Dorado counties. The college currently serves approximately 8,700 students each semester at the main Folsom campus, the El Dorado Center in Placerville, and the Rancho Cordova Center. Each of these sites has its own identity, its own personality. Due to tremendous growth of the Folsom region, the main Folsom campus quickly expanded to keep up with the demand for quality education. The modern 151acre campus is also active with social, cultural, and athletic opportunities for its student body. The Falcon’s Roost is the center of student life and home to the college’s energetic student government
and clubs. The renowned Harris Center for the Arts allows talented students to train with the best in a professional setting. And the growing athletic programs have brought competition and camaraderie to the Falcons' athletics complex. The El Dorado Center is located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The new state-of-the-art Rancho Cordova Center facility, located at the corner of Folsom Blvd. and Paseo Dr. and across the street from the Mather Field/Mills Station light rail, will serve as an educational hub for this close knit and diverse community. Students can pursue their general education requirements or learn English as a second language. This central location will also respond to local and state business needs with programs focused on skills needed to work in the public sector. Three unique locations. One highly regarded institution. Inside the Harris Center for the Arts: Three Stages and more...
Stage One: 850-seat Theater. With a 46-foot proscenium, full stage house, and orchestra pit, this is a venue capable of presenting all of the arts, from Broadway to symphonies, contemporary dance to world music. Stage One puts the art close to the audience.
In addition to its three stages, this $50 million, 80,000 square foot regional arts complex contains: Bank of America Gallery. A wonderful space located near the front entrance hosting visual art exhibitions national, regional, local, and student. Black Box. A flexible space perfect for a rehearsal, a sit-down dinner, teaching a class, or creating a work of art. Recording Studio. One of the largest in the capital region. Most every space in the center can be recorded live, audio or visual, at the press of a button. Guild Mortgage Lobby. A unique gathering place for the audience, for friends, and for a conversation with the artist afterwards. Ample auxiliary spaces including rehearsal spaces, scene shop, costume shop, classrooms, and more. All venues boast state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment, with digital projectors.

Stage Two: 200-seat City Studio Theater. Named by the City of Folsom, the City Studio has gently raked seating and, like the larger theater next door, there's not a bad seat in the house. Stage Three: 100-seat Scott-Skillman Recital Hall. An exceptional setting for acoustic music and vocals - the reverberation is exquisite. “What does someone do with a degree in Studio Art?”
Following are stories about Folsom Lake College Visual Arts Department current and former students at different periods in their academic and artistic careers offering some possible answers.
Kylie Duthie is currently finishing her requirements in the prestigious Science Illustration Certificate Program at CSU Monterey, a one-year graduate level program designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in scientific illustration. Once completed, Kylie hopes to work at the Monterey Bay Aquarium or one of its associates. She chose FLC for its transfer program and as a foundation to affordably explore her academic interests and options. Kylie received an A.A. in Studio Art. She transferred to UC Davis to study Printmaking and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art. Jacob Goodwin is a current student pursuing an A.A. in Studio Art. He plans on transferring to California State University, Sacramento to study for a Bachelors of Art majoring in Ceramics and minoring in Painting. His overall career goals are to be an active artist/ceramist in the Sacramento area, and possibly pursue a MA or MFA. Jacob was recently featured in Good Day Sacramento for one of his largescale paintings. He sells his paintings and ceramic pieces regularly, and has received commissions for his artwork. Jacob began his academic path at Sierra College, and transferred to FLC where he got hooked. He finds the environment, instructors, and classes excite him, and provide a sense of connection and belonging to the studio art program. Valoia Laolagi is a recent graduate from FLC. He received both A.A. and A.A.-Transfer degrees in
Studio Art. Val is transferring to Laguna College of Art and Design with a generous scholarship to study for a BFA, majoring in Illustration with an Emphasis in Entertainment and minoring in Sculpture. His academic goal is to pursue a Master of Fine Arts, which is the terminal degree in Studio Art. Val’s career goal is to work in the entertainment industry, pursuing storyboarding, character design for movies, and comic book authoring. Currently Val sells his work and exhibits in regional exhibitions. His work has been showcased at the California Conference for the Advancement Ceramic Arts for four years in a row, where his sculpture was showcased in the exhibition brochure. Val chose FLC as a place for study, initially in Fire Tech, because of the location and convenience. Once at FLC he stayed and changed his major because of the individualized instruction he received in the clay program. Val found the art classes challenging yet allowing for individual expression and growth. Folsom Lake College's Visual Arts Department offers 4 degrees: Associate of Arts in Studio Art and Art History, and Associate of Arts for Transfer in Studio Art and Art History.

Welcome! With the Center’s Fifth Anniversary upon us, it’s time to celebrate. To kick things off, we’ve brought back some of the most popular touring shows from our first year, among them STOMP, Hal Holbrook’s Mark Twain Tonight! and the Moscow Festival Ballet’s production of Swan Lake. We also have a world premiere featuring the music of Los Lobos, as well as the national tour of Woody Allen’s hilarious new musical comedy Bullets Over Broadway in its regional debut. To add to the fun, Peter Frampton has agreed to make a special aooearance in March. In addition, we have five special anniversary events planned: • Harris Center 5th Anniversary Exhibit (runs through March 13) Welcome, and thank you for visiting the Harris Center for the Arts. In February, 2011 the Harris Center opened with the mission of enriching the lives of people throughout the capital region by providing venues and opportunities to experience artistic work, celebrate cultural traditions and participate in the creative process. Now, more than 1500 performances later, we’ve visited with artists from more than 50 countries, experienced the magic of two dozen Broadway shows, and shared special moments with some of today’s top entertainers. Our
community partners (page 15) have grown in strength and numbers, and the artistic work by Folsom Lake College students and faculty, whether in the visual arts (page 14), music, theatre or dance, is phenomenal. If it’s your first time to the Center, we’re glad that you’ve decided to give us a try, and hope you’ll be back once you’ve experienced a great show, up close, in one of our three state-of-the art venues (page 9). STOMP, a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, was created in Brighton, UK, in the summer of 1991. It was the result of a ten-year collaboration between its creators, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. They first worked together in 1981, as members of the street band Pookiesnackenburger and the theatre group Cliff Hanger. Together, these groups presented a series of street comedy musicals at the Edinburgh Festival throughout the early ‘80s. After two albums, a UK TV series and extensive touring throughout Europe, Pookiesnackenburger also produced the highly acclaimed “Bins” commercial for Heineken lager. The piece was originally written and choreographed by Luke as part of the band’s stage show; it proved to be the starting point for STOMP’s climactic dustbin dance. In 1986, Luke and Steve created an eight-minute ‘percussive movie’ for Bette Midler’s HBO special Mondo Beyondo. Between 1987 and 1990, Luke staged, as Artistic and Musical Director, four large-scale outdoor events, including Beat the Clyde, which involved floating a drum orchestra on a pontoon in the centre of Glasgow; the largest of these events, The Heineken Hove Lagoon Show, involved a 120-piece drum orchestra featuring the Brighton Festival Chorus and a full orchestral string section. In 1991, Steve and Luke first created STOMP, previewing at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre and premiering at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, where it became The Guardian’s “Critics’ Choice” and won The Daily Express “Best of the Fringe Award.” Between 1991 and 1994, the original cast of STOMP played to capacity audiences around the world: from Hong Kong to Barcelona, from Dublin to Sydney. The touring culminated in a sellout season at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre in January 1994, where STOMP received an Olivier nomination for Best Entertainment and won Best Choreography in a West End Show. An expanded version of STOMP, involving up to 30 cast members, was originally created for the Brighton Festival, UK, and was subsequently presented in Melbourne, Australia. It was most recently seen in September 1995, open-air, at the Acropolis in Athens, and at the Royal Festival Hall, London. This production broke all box office records, which had been established by Frank Sinatra in1972. STOMP began its run at the Orpheum Theatre in New York in February 1994 and quickly went on to win both an Obie and a Drama Desk Award for Most Unique Experience. By the summer of 1994, the first American cast was in place at the Orpheum, freeing the original cast for sell-out tours of North America and Japan. In the summer of 1995, two more American productions were created for the sole purpose of US touring, which continues to this day. US casts have also debuted STOMP in Chile, Brazil and Korea. Meanwhile, a fifth STOMP company, also touring from the UK, was formed in 1997 and has consistently toured the world ever since. This company presented STOMP for the first

time in Scandinavia and South Africa, and has been a regular visitor to Germany, Holland and France. Another STOMP production opened in San Francisco in May 2000, running for two and a half years. The original cast of STOMP have recorded music for the Tank Girl movie soundtrack and appeared on the Quincy Jones album, Q’s Jook Joint. A soundtrack recorded by Steve and Luke for the Showtime movie Riot was released in the spring of 1997. STOMP has also featured in a number of commercials, including Coca-Cola’s “Ice Pick” and numerous spots for both Target stores in the US and Toyota in Japan. STOMP also created the Mr Frears’ Ears series of short films created for Nickelodeon, whilst Brooms, a 15-minute short based around the opening routine, was nominated for an Academy Award. Brooms was also selected for screening at Robert Redford’s Sundance Festival and for competition at the Cannes Film Festival. STOMP made a special appearance at the Academy Awards in March 1996, with an original piece involving the live synchronization of classic film clips and onstage action, featuring 20 performers from all five productions. In the summer of 1997, Steve and Luke created and directed STOMP OUT LOUD, a 45-minute television special for HBO, which combined stage material with new pieces created for TV. It was premiered in the USA in December 1997 and subsequently received four Emmy nominations, for direction, sound mixing, multi-camera editing and art direction. 1998 saw the release of the STOMP OUT LOUD video and DVD

The Lost and Found Orchestra reunited in 2010 for a new show, PANDEMONIUM, which appeared in several US cities throughout the autumn.
STOMP performed after midnight on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at US President Clinton’s millennium celebrations. During 2000, a Sesame Street special, “Let’s Make Music,” a collaboration between STOMP and the Muppets, was released on TV and video in North America.
In 2011, the New York production of STOMP entered its eighteenth year, trouncing the Orpheum house record set by Little Shop of Horrors. It also entered its tenth year in the West End at the Ambassadors Theatre, whilst at the same time Steve and Luke continued with their 3D film work. 2012 has seen the release of The Last Reef 3D, a film about the beauty and the plight of reefs worldwide. As with Wild Ocean, Luke and Steve composed the film’s orchestral soundtrack, recording it at The Old Market Theatre in their hometown of Brighton & Hove in the UK.
Luke and Steve began production of their IMAX movie Pulse: A STOMP Odyssey in Brazil during Carnival 2000 and completed it in the summer of 2002. Pulse takes the IMAX audience on a spectacular global journey, featuring performances from Kodo, Timbalada and Eva Yerbabuena. It was released to critical acclaim in New York in the autumn of 2002, and went on to win two major awards at the International Festival of La Géode in Paris. In September 2002, STOMP finally entered London’s West End at the Vaudeville Theatre, and later that year STOMP performed as part of The Royal Variety Show for the second time. 2003 saw a new STOMP production open at the Stuart Street Theatre in Boston and a unique Dolby Digital trailer featuring STOMP performances debuted in cinemas across the globe. In 2004, New York celebrated 10 years of continuous performances of STOMP at the Orpheum Theatre by renaming 2nd Avenue at 8th Street Stomp Avenue. In addition to the European tour, in 2005 STOMP returned to Tokyo for three weeks and also toured to Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. In 2006, STOMP’s New York production passed its 5,000th performance mark. In the same year, Luke and Steve directed a public service announcement for television called “Stomp Out Litter,” which featured the cast ‘sweeping up’ at iconic locations in the five boroughs. In addition, they were commissioned to create and produce The Lost and Found Orchestra, which takes the ideas behind STOMP to a symphonic level, in celebration of 40 years of the Brighton Festival. The LFO subsequently performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Sydney Festival early in 2007, was seen at the Royal Festival Hall in London at Christmas 2008 and the Theater Carré in February 2009. In 2007, STOMP OUT LOUD opened in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino with an expanded cast and performed inside a new $28 million theatre, specifically created for the production. The West End entered its 6th consecutive year with a move from the Vaudeville to the Ambassadors Theatre, where it still resides. In 2008, STOMP returned to its roots for a new DVD shoot at the Brighton Dome, bringing together a cast from all over the STOMP world. For the first time, the entire show has been captured in high definition sound and video. 2008 also saw Steve and Luke expand into new areas with the release of their IMAX 3D nature documentary Wild Ocean, with a symphonic mix of percussion and traditional orchestra in the soundtrack. In September of the same year, Wild Ocean won two awards at the Giant Screen Cinema Association for Best Sound and Best Original Score at their annual conference held in New York.
They have also celebrated the one year anniversary of The Old Market Theatre, which, having renovated it back in 2011, they now run as a full time venue, bringing music, theatre, dance, comedy and visual arts to the UK’s south coast. Most recently, in August 2012, the largest ever assembly of STOMP performers (40 performers from 12 different countries) were brought together for a specifically choreographed appearance in the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. STOMP was created with the original U.K. cast: Luke Cresswell, Nick Dwyer, Sarah Eddy, Theseus Gerard, Fraser Morrison, David Olrod, Carl Smith and Fiona Wilkes. JOHN ANGELES (Performer) is from Fort Worth, TX, where he began his music training studying percussion. He went on to study percussion and music performance at TCU where he got his Bachelors Degree in music education. He was a proud member of the 2001 DCI world champions, the Cavaliers, where he marched snare drum. Throughout college and thereafter, John has performed with various percussion groups and bands, and has toured the world doing performances and clinics. John would like to thank his parents, family, and his friends for helping make his dreams come true, and dedicates his performances to them all. LEILANI DIBBLE (Performer) is from San Mateo California, and spent her first 21 years in the Bay Area. Forever a California girl. She joined the STOMP family in 2003. STOMP: Who's Who in the Cast DELAUNCE JACKSON (Performer) began his journey in Cincinnati, OH studying and performing with local artist mentors Terri Brown and Jack Louiso, including annual intensives with Katherine Dunham in St. Louis, MO and syndicated pilot television series under Jim Friedman & Scripps Howard Foundation, Inc. After graduating from Howard University having studied biology and internal medicine, he went onto study with Assane Konte of Kankouran W.African Dance Company [Wash, DC], Brian Williams of Step Afrika! [Wash, DC] and Cirque du Soleil MOSAIC. He thanks the Creator for ordering his steps, his family for their undying love & support and is humbled to join the cast of STOMP on this artistic journey! KRIS LEE (Performer) is an accomplished percussionist and a cum laude graduate of the Hartt School of Music. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of the rhythmic educational program Touch the Sound that provides percussion workshops for inner city youth. She is involved with Tom Tom Magazine out of Brooklyn, NY and Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. Kris travels both nationally and internationally to share her passion for rhythm. GUIDO MANDOZZI (Performer) Guido is from the United Kingdom. After graduating in Acting from Mountview Theatre School in London, he performed in many shows before being fortunate to get to be part of the STOMP family. Through this show, Guido has managed to perform in all four STOMP companies around the world and has also ticked off 49 of America's states! He is also an avid photographer and loves to document his travels via this visual form on Facebook, instagram (@gmando) and twitter. JEREMY PRICE (Performer) Born and raised in Roanoke, VA, Jeremy has been performing with STOMP intermittently since 2003! Initially a break dancer and drum set player, He now finds himself working as a multi-instrumentalist and touring with his own percussion ensemble Plastic Musik. www.plasticmusik.com KRYSTAL RENÉE (Performer) A New York native and LaGuardia High School alumna, Krystal has worked intensively in the theater, dance, and music fields. She trained as a theater major at California Institute of the Arts, studied classical voice abroad at Florence University of the Arts, and graduated summa cum laude from SUNY Purchase. After working for several years as a street musician and performer, he first created STOMP in 1991. He has directed, with Steve McNicholas, several awardwinning commercials and short films. He received an Oscar® nomination for the film Brooms, an Emmy® nomination for STOMP OUT LOUD, and co-directed the award winning IMAX movie, Pulse: A STOMP Odyssey. He has also received a special achievement award from the Chicago Human Rhythm Project. More recently, Luke co-created the Lost and Found Orchestra and the Vegas production of STOMP OUT LOUD and also codirected the 3D IMAX movie Wild Ocean. Luke occasionally performs with STOMP, and is currently conductor of the LFO. STEVE McNICHOLAS (Director), from Yorkshire, has worked as an actor/singer/musician/writer with various theatrical and musical groups, starting out with the Bradford Theatre Group in 1973. Through the ’80s he worked with Cliff Hanger, Covent Garden Community Theatre, and Pookiesnackenburger. Despite also being an original member of the a cappella group the Flying Pickets, and a final appearance in Mr. Bean, Steve no longer performs. He shares directorial credits with Luke Cresswell on STOMP-based films and commercials,and their new show, the Lost and Found Orchestra. Since then they’ve repeatedly disproven that title—Los Lobos isn’t “just another” anything, but rather a band that has consistently evolved artistically while never losing sight of their humble roots. Los Lobos were already East L.A. neighborhood legends, Sunset Strip regulars and a Grammy Award-winning band (Best Mexican-American/Tejano Music Performance) by the time they recorded their major label debut How Will The Wolf Survive? in 1984. Although the album’s name and title song were inspired by a National Geographic article about real life wolves in the wild, the band—David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad
Recorded over two nights in December 2012 at The City Winery in NYC, the engaging 12-song set celebrates Los Lobos’ great legacy as a freewheeling and unpredictable live band, which most recently includes touring in Europe with Neil Young and Crazy Horse in June 2013. Disconnected in New York City features fresh interpretations of songs from throughout their three decade recording career, including their first ever live recording of “La Bamba,” their worldwide pop crossover hit from the 1987 film which reached #1 on the U.S. and UK singles chart and whose video won a 1988 MTV Music Video Award. The collection covers the band’s 25 year studio discography, from “Gotta Let You Know” (a bouncy zydeco rocker driven by Hidalgo’s accordion from How Will The Wolf Survive?) through “Tin Can Trust,” a bluesy rock ballad that was the title cut from their last studio release in 2010. By design, Disconnected in New York City has songs that have been longtime staples of Los Lobos’ tours mixed with other gems that had somehow fallen by the wayside over the years. The mix includes the mid-tempo shuffling rocker title track from The Neighborhood (1990); the easy flowing and whimsical (thanks to Berlin’s jazzy sax solo) “Oh Yeah” (from This Time, 1999); the spirited, traditional flavored, Rosas penned Spanish language “Chuco’s Cumbia” (from The Town and the City, 2006); the graceful and spiritual “Tears of God” (from By The Light of the Moon,1987); “La Venganza de Los Pelados,” a fiery burst o

Latin rock fusion with mariachi textures (from The Ride, 2004); the soulful, simmering blues of “Little Things” (from The Town and The City, 2006); the Latin blues funk classic “Set Me Free Rosa Lee” (from By The Light of the Moon); and two mid-tempo funk pop/rock tunes from 2002’s Good Morning Aztlan, “Maria Christina” and “Malaque.” As per the literal meaning of its title, Disconnected In New York City sets itself apart from Los Lobos’ other acclaimed live recordings (most notably, 2005’s Live At the Fillmore) by stripping down the instrumentation for a mostly acoustic affair. Lozano, who drives the grooves with his bass and also plays the deep-bodied Mexican 6-string acoustic bass called the guitarron, says, “It’s funny because when the venue hired us; they specifically requested that we do something acoustic to fit its smaller dinner house vibe. The idea popped into our heads to ask them if we could record it and they were cool with that. We’re well known for our electric, high energy performances but we’ve done acoustic stuff for certain smaller auditorium tours,” he says. “Playing these songs acoustically makes them feel more intimate. We notice that when you play softer and quieter, the audience tends to pay attention to everything we’re doing. When you play rock, they’re thinking more about rhythm than melodies and lyrics, but playing them this way allows for more subtle elements of the songs to stand out.” Looking back at the historical and cultural sweep of the band, Lozano sees the release of Disconnected In New York City as Los Lobos coming full circle. “A lot of people forget that though we were rock musicians when we got out of high school, the band started off as an acoustic outfit,” he says. “We wanted to play Mexican folk music because those were our roots and there was this whole Chicano awareness thing happening back in the early 70s. We started to pay attention to our traditions and culture, and focused on those styles of music for years. We studied music from every region of Mexico, learned how to play all these authentic instruments. So that’s what we did for ten years until we decided to play rock again by bringing in drum and electric bass. “We were playing this restaurant gig for two years, and some small local clubs, playing the same songs, when people in the crowd started shouting out, ‘Do you know any Beatles or Grateful Dead tunes?’” Lozano adds. “Soon we got fired from the restaurant and headed back to the garage to write our first original songs that were rock with some accordion on them: 'Let’s Say Goodnight' and 'How Much Can I Do?' We made a little tape and gave it to the guys in The Blasters, which included Steve Berlin, when we went to see them live on Sunset Strip. They loved our tunes and invited us to open their show at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go, which was the first time Los Lobos performed on the other side of the Los Angeles River. We played some originals and old favorites by Hendrix, Cream, The Yardbirds and Beatles–all the stuff we loved as kids. The icing on the cake is that the audience loved it, too.”

CARLOS MORENO SAMANIEGO (General Director) Founder of the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano (BFM) in 1967 in the city of Livermore. Carlos learned about the theater arts at an early age. His father directed and performed a group in Nazas, Durango, Mexico, while his mother designed the costumes, sets, and props for their performances. His formal instruction began at the age of 11. After completing high school, Mr. Moreno's artistic ambitions led him to study folkloric dance in Guadalajara and Ciudad Juarez. Still seeking the right environment, however, in which to express his dreams and talents, he emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1958. There he met his wife, Angelina Garcia, who later became the costume designer for the BFM. Carlos Sr.'s unrelenting passion for researching, teaching, and performing the traditional dances of Mexico have made him a recognized expert in the field. For this reason, he and the BFM have received numerous recognitions in both the United States and Mexico. Mr. Moreno has successfully directed the BFM and taken the company to professional status, performing in major venues, for professional sports events, popular TV shows, and educational and cultural events throughout the United States, and internationally, to Mexico. CARLOS GARCIA MORENO (Artistic Director) Carlos launched his artistic and performing career at the age of three when he began studying the fundamentals of Mexican folk dance under the tutelage of his father. While a teenager, he received further training in Mexican folk dance, music, and costuming at the Academia de Danza Tizoc in Mexico City. From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Moreno was a corps dancer with the renown Ballet Folclórico de Mexico of Amalia Hernandez, with whom he toured North and Central America, Europe, and the Orient. He returned permanently to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1992 to devote himself to his first love - the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano (BFM). The company's primary choreographer since the late 1980's, Carlos keeps working full-time with the BFM on its artistic repertoire and on the training of its dancers. Additionally, he teaches at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, as well as gives workshops to individuals, schools and dance groups. This choreographic genius, besides creating the BFM's repertoire, also collaborates with arts organizations in the community to deliver outreach programs to children in schools.

Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom Sunday, January 24, 2016; 1 & 6 pm This new production of Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom will introduce a multitalented cast, featuring singers, dancers, musicians and actors — celebrating 100 years of Irish Independence. They will be bringing to stages across the USA and Canada this epic story of a small nation seeking out liberty and independence. July 4th, American Independence Day, Thomas Jefferson wrote the American creed. “to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — to which rightful freedoms all human beings are said to be equally entitled.” Similarly the Irish Proclamation of 1916 reads: "The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities of all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and of all its parts, cherishing all the children of the nation equally." The Easter Rising of 1916 as it is called, or sometimes referred to as The Poets Rebellion, revived the dream of freedom for the Irish people. Soon their day would come where they would have their liberty.

Celebrating 100 Years of Irish Independence Spirit of Freedom tells the story of Irish independence, beginning 100 years ago with the Easter Rising. Akin to America's 4th of July, the Easter Rising of 1916 created the Ireland we know and love today. Music is the soul, the very lifeblood of their tradition. It binds them together, even as it sets them apart. This driving passion for music and dance is the keystone of Celtic identity. Their response to melody, lyric, and the criss-crossing rhythms of Irish dance is reflexive, intuitive, and filled with joy. The Irish embrace their musical culture like no other nation. And their pride in artistry is its own reward. Above all else, it is this natural affinity with music and song that has given Celtic people a truly global voice. A Celtic Voice. It was all started by the brave men and women who died in the Easter Uprising of 1916. They hoped that someday their countrymen would realize their blood sacrifice, and also take up arms against what they saw as an illegal occupation of their home. In fact, most of them knew long before the Rising began that it had little chance of success. They went ahead anyway because they believed that the people of Ireland needed some hope; some gesture to inspire them to achieve their desire for independence. In that respect, the Easter Rising of 1916 was a glorious triumph. In this production of Celtic Nights, we capture the story as a musical journey of courage, sheer pride and determination. Interwoven among the songs, music and dance are stories of profound love and courage. Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom will take you on that journey of patriotism, revenge, love and courage in a 2 hour spectacular. Individual storylines will be running through this show; Spirit of Freedom, with costumes and sets depicting the time period. Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom will bring together storylines from the history pages of Ireland. It encapsulates the cry for an independent and free nation through the eyes of heroes and heroines: Love, passion, spirit of freedom, love of life, liberty, and independence. Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom CAST CIARAN OLOHAN (Singer) has an established career as a singer and actor encompassing all genres of music from folk to operatic. A past pupil of Blackrock College, Ciaran has a BA in History and Greek and Roman Civilization from University College Dublin, and an MA in Classics, also from UCD. Ciaran studied singing with Philip O’Reilly at the Royal Irish Academy of Music for six years. While at the Academy he also received a diploma in performance. For Lyric Opera Ciaran has performed in such productions as Lucia di Lammermoor, Don Giovanni, and Il Trovatore. He also performed the role of Pish Tush in Lyric’s production of The Mikado at the International Festival of Gilbert and Sullivan. He has made his own of the Baritone patter roles in Gilbert and Sullivan Operettes including The Mikado (The Mikado), Samuel (The Pirates of Penzance), Pooh Bah (The Mikado), and Don Alhambra (The Gondoliers). In 2012 Ciaran performed in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre with Wide Open Opera’s debut production of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, and in September of 2013 he performed once again with WOO in Raymond Dean’s, The Alma Fetish. Last year Ciaran performed in The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny for Rough Magic Theatre Company in partnership with Opera Theatre Company for the Sky Arts Ignition project at the Olympia Theatre. Musical Theatre roles include, Judd Fry (Oklahoma!), Harry the Horse (Guys and Dolls, The Kralahome (The King and I), Dr Jeckyl/Mr Hyde (Jeckyl and Hyde). As a vocalist and guitarist, Ciaran performs with his band The Daily Howl on a regular basis. Last year they released their first EP, and since then have toured Ireland doing the festival circuit. The Daily Howl’s first album is currently being recorded with Irish artist Gavin Glass, and will be released in 2016. E M I LY O ’ D W Y E R (Singer) A native of Durrow, Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Emily began her musical journey at 7 years of age when she joined the Adele O’Dwyer Tullamore Classical String School. Tullamore Academy of Music. She completed her voice and violin grade exams achieving higher achiever awards in each case. In 2011 Emily began her third level education at Maynooth University as an entrance scholarship student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Music. She studied violin under the tutelage of Sebastien Petiet and became a member of the university orchestra. She successfully auditioned for the renowned Maynooth University Chamber Choir and in 2013 toured in the U.S.A with the choir and conductor Micheal Dawson. While there she also performed a solo violin piece accompanied by her choir colleagues at the St. Patrick’s Day breakfast celebration in the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York, Notre Dame University, Indiana, and the Irish-American Heritage Centre, Chicago. Emily graduated in 2014 with first-class honors in music. She formed Anù, a musical duo, with friend and fellow musician Rebecca Murphy. They recorded an album Lend an Ear and continue to charm audiences with their unique celtic sound. They brought their music to Florence, Italy in 2014 where she took master classes in violin under Claudia Rizzitelli. She also took master classes in voice under Susanna Rigacci. Moving to Vienna, Austria in early 2015, Emily continued her voice and violin studies at the Vienna Conservatoire of Music. Upon her return from Austria, she rejoined the Maynooth University Chamber Choir to record their album and was part of the successful team which won Choir of the World at the Llangollen International Choral Festival in Wales. She is currently performing with GFD promotions Celtic Arch in Celbridge Manor. IAN DREW (Singer) 27 year old Ian Drew was born and raised in the heart of Ireland, Dublin. Since birth he was raised listening to his cousin Ronnie D re w, f ro m t h e very well-known Irish folk band, the Dubliners. At the age of 17, Ian decided to follow in Ronnie’s footsteps and pursue his dream to become a singer. Ian has been entertaining people from far and wide since 2012 in Dublin City Centre as a singer and performer. In 2013 Ian got the amazing opportunity to perform "Rocky Road to Dublin" In Dublin’s Croke Park for the all-Ireland Finals. Ian is delighted to be on his first tour of the USA and Canada with Celtic Nights: The Spirit of Freedom.
NIK PARKS (Singer) Training: Royal Irish Academy of Music (under Dr. Veronica Dunne) and Mountview Academy of Theatre Art, London. Nik has also performed extensively in some of Ireland's most beautiful theatres including Dublin's National Concert Hall with Festival Productions, Belfast Opera House with St. Agnes and the Gaiety Theatre with Opera Ireland (Dead Man Walking Irish Premier). Nik’s roles in Ireland include Valjean in Les Misérables SE, Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar (Winner Best Male Singer AIMS 2007 and Best Supporting Man WIFLO 2007), Freddie in Chess, Jekyll/Hyde in Jekyll & Hyde (Best Male Singer Nominee AIMS 2010 and Winner Best Male Singer and Best Male Performer WIFLO 2010) and Laurie in Little Women the Musical (Irish Premier). Nik's roles while training in London included Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof, Othello in Othello, Julian Marsh in 42nd Street and Fabrizio in The Light In The Piazza. In 2007 Nik was featured in the BBC TV series Any Dream Will Do Andrew Lloyd Webber's search for Joseph, where he reached the final 20 out of over 10,000 contestants. Most recently Nik toured Spain in The Jersey Boys, created the role of The Romantic in West End Star, Peter Corry's production of Moulin Rouge Spectacular, and was a featured soloist in Peter's ever popular Christmas show The Music Box in Belfast's Waterfront Hall. Nik has enjoyed two tours in Europe with GFD Promotions in The International Magic Tenors. He is delighted to be making his American and Canadian début with Celtic Nights: The Spirit of Freedom. REBEKAH JOHANNE SINGER (Singer) Rebekah was born in Scotland but studied in London at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. After graduating in London, she went on to work in musical theatre and choreography all around the world. With an Orcadian heritage, Rebekah’s beautiful Celtic voice returns to Celtic Nights: The Spirit of Freedom. This is Rebekah’s third year with Celtic Nights and has travelled with the show to 33 different USA states. Rebekah is delighted to be returning to the USA, and for the first time to Canada, and would like to thank her family for their continued support. She would like to dedicate her performance to her brother, Jamie. SARA BYRNE (Singer) i s a p ro fe s s i o n a l singer and actress who has performed in various shows and productions in the USA, UK and Ireland. She has a BA in Drama and Theatre Studies from Trinity College Dublin and upon completing her studies, has worked with various theatre companies such as Macnas and performed the role of Titania in London-based theatre company Immer-City’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It ran in the Beckett Theatre in Dublin, toured Ireland and had a month long run in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She has also worked with award-winning filmmakers on multiple productions at the National Film School. Sara also received a scholarship to study American Music Performance in Boston through the Fusion Arts Programme, performing and attending workshops in Boston, New York and Washington. Sara completed her H-Dip in Drama Education in Griffith College which resulted in her setting up a Creative Arts Summer Camp, along with teaching drama and singing in primary schools, The Theatre Factory, Stage Coach and The Summer Stage School. Sara recently trained for a diploma in Musical Theatre in Ireland's first musical theatre college, The Irish College of Musical Theatre, where she performed in the National Concert Hall in the role of Maria from West Side Story and Sally from Follies and received a Distinction upon completing the course. Sara is currently studying her classical vocal training with Deirdre Masterson and also studied singing, music theory and piano in the Conservatory of Music and Drama and the Irish Academy of Music and Drama. She has performed in various operas such as Carmen, La Traviata and The Magic Flute with conductor David Brophy. Sara has been a winner and runner up in various Feis Ceoil competitions including being the winner of the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Theatre Cup. Sara has also performed for, and been a member of many choirs including RTE’s Cór na nÓg, the Bach Singers and Trinity Singers. She has performed in The Players Theatre

She was also chosen to perform solo in a master class for Broadway and West End leading ladies, Liz Callaway and Rebecca Storm. Sara has worked with GFD Promotions performing in their recent production of Celtic Arch. Sara is very excited to be a part of and working alongside the wonderfully talented and creative cast and crew of Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom. KEVIN GOBLE (Dancer) started dancing when he was 8 years old. He joined the Griffin Lynch school of Irish Dance based in Leatherhead, taught b y M a g g i e Ly n c h and world renowned choreographer Richard Griffin. Kevin has performed and competed at the highest level for 13 years now giving him the opportunity to dance over every continent! For the last 5 years Kevin's been touring with Gaelforce Dance and Dance Masters, dancing the Lead Role. He has enjoyed many wonderful experiences and met some amazing people along the way! Kevin’s touring experiences has allowed him to perform in front of thousands of people. He has enjoyed every moment of it and hopes it will continue for many more years! Hope you enjoy the show. GAVIN BOYLE (Dancer) Gavin started dancing at the age of 6 for the Boyle School of Irish Dancing in Glasgow, Scotland. Throughout the 13 years of his competitive career he travelled all over the world and achieved a top ten placing at all major events including 5th in the World Championships. After giving up competing at the age of 19 he joined Riverdance where he toured the UK and Ireland. During his time at Riverdance he was also a member of their flying squad and performed on several TV programs throughout Europe. In 2008 he joined GFD Promotions and has since toured Germany, Russia, Czech Republic, Poland, Austria and Switzerland with Dance Masters and Gaelforce Dance. He was part of the original cast of Celtic Nights and is delighted to be coming back to America, and debuting in Canada, for its fourth tour. LEANNE PHELAN (Dancer) Leanne was born in England and began Irish dancing at the age of just three. With a father from
Kilkenny, Leanne was brought up listening to jigs and reels on repeat. At college she studied a broad range of dance from ballet to flamenco and everything in between. However, Irish dance has always remained her true passion. After competing for many years at a world championship level with the Griffin Lynch School, she was asked to join GFD Promotions. Over the past 5 years, Leanne has performed across the globe in China, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and the USA. She has also performed in London's West End and The Royal Albert Hall alongside The Chieftains. This will be her third time returning to the states with the cast of Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom and is looking forward to making her debut in Canada this year. Leanne asks that you stamp your feet, clap your hands and enjoy the show! RACHEL HUNTER (Dancer) started dancing for the Hunter School of Irish Dancing when she was just 4 years old. During her time competing she achieved consistent top 5 results throughout all of the major events, winning the Leinster Championship and numerous Dublin Championships. Since 2011, Rachel has been touring with Gaelforce Dance and Dance Masters and has loved every minute of living on the road. In 2013 she performed as the lead role Rhiannon in Gaelforce Dance. The shows have allowed her to perform across 3 different continents giving Rachel the chance to experience all the different cultures. When Rachel is not on tour, she performs at the famous Johnnie Foxes Pub in Dublin. Enjoy the show! SARAH FENNELL (Dancer) Sarah began Irish dancing at the age of 3 and also took lessons in ballet hiphop, tap and jazz until her early teens. She then focused primarily on Competitive Irish dance and began working in dance shows from the age of 16. Sarah has been touring with Dance Masters and Gaelforce Dance over the last three years as a lead dancer. She has been a dancer for the Louise Flood School of Irish Dance in Dublin for the past ten years. BEN GUNNERY (Musician) is a multiinstrumentalist who studied at the Royal College of Music and Trinity College of Music, graduating with a first class degree in Classical Violin Performance. Ben has gone on tour internationally with various companies/bands/orchestras such as: Barrage, Riverdance, Gaelforce, Dance Masters, Celtic Legends, Irish Celtic, Incantation, Shane MacGowan and the Popes, Calgary Philharmonic, Lost Music of the Gaels (to name a few), and is a regularly booked musician for Orchestral/ Classical/Folk sessions in London for Film/TV/Contemporary composers. LAURA CALLAGHAN (Musician) A classical pianist since the age of 7, Laura was introduced at the age of 11 to the world of Traditional Irish Music. She came to master the piano classically and traditionally, collecting numerous titles in Fleadh Ceoil competitions. From this she became interested in string instruments, beginning with tenor banjo, mandolin and in recent years, guitar. Laura won an AllIreland title after just a year of playing guitar, and has since become known as one of the few female Traditional Guitarists in the country. Laura is developing a reputation both as a singer, songwriter, and a multiinstrumentalist performing extensively across Ireland, Europe and Stateside with her band Perfect Friction, Irish dance shows and other musical projects. STEPHEN O’CONNOR (Musician) Stephen is a multi-instrumentalist from Dublin, Ireland. At the age of 11 he began playing the Uilleann Pipes and was taught by many influential pipers such as Sean Òg Potts, Tommy Martin and Davy Spillane. It wasn't long before Stephen began his professional career at just 15 becoming a regular fixture in Dublin's Templebar. Stephen was educated in Templeogue College and went on to study in the sought after Ballyfermot College Of Further Education. Having spent two years learning from influential flautist Paul McGrattan, he received a Distinction Diploma in 2008. It wasn't long after in that same year he

caught the eye of Michael Durkan (Executive Producer of GFD Promotions) and began his life as a touring musician. Stephen has toured in Germany, Russia, China, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Australia, America, England, Norway, France, and Canada, playing in such shows as Gaelforce Dance, Dance Masters and Celtic Nights. Stephen is very excited about touring America with Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom for the fourth time and Canada for the first time. MICHAEK DURKAN (Producer/Director Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom) Michael was born in the heart of Dublin...a five minute w a l k f ro m t h e O ’ Connell Street where the Easter Rising of 1916 took place. He attended St. Canices and O’Connells Schools, both run by the Christian Brothers who instilled into him a sense of community, spirit, independence of mind and a love of country. Michael is CEO of GFD Promotions Ltd. and Executive Producer of a number of highly acclaimed theatrical productions which have toured the world since 1997. Michael’s own career spans 35 years, both as a performer with the Irish Drovers worldwide and subsequently his own solo singing career. Michael commenced his career in theatre and show business at the age of 16 and learned his trade, as they say, first as a Redcoat in Butlin’s and also working with the GATE Theatre, Dublin (Michael MacLiamoir and Hilton Edwards). Michael has worked in television for many years, as a performer, a producer, and presenter. He has since moved on from his own career as an entertainer to become the Producer/Director of many internationally acclaimed productions and has used his talents and experience to create new and exciting shows: Gaelforce Dance, Celtic Nights, The International Magic Tenors, Celtic Angels, World of Musicals, On Eagle’s Wing and Dance Masters -The Best of Irish Dance. Gaelforce Dance, the first of Michael's productions, was awarded the highly acclaimed Limelight Award in 2011 as the Best Dance Show by his industry peers against steep opposition from such productions as Riverdance and Burn the Floor. All of these productions tour in various territories and to date the shows have played in over 30 countries worldwide in such celebrated venues as The Royal Albert Hall London, the famous Sala Kongresowa, and the Opera Theatre Wilke in Warsaw, Poland’s Premier Opera House, as well as many of the Great American Theatres, and prestigious venues in Australia China, Taiwan, Korea

While living in Australia Michael opened up and ran a number of Pubs in Sydney including The Mercantile, Scruffy Murphy’s, Molly McGuires and Kitty O’ Sheas. Michael also built an impressive events company during this period and presented The Guinness and Oyster Festivals in Sydney drawing in over 300,000 people to the Rocks area of Sydney over a long weekend annually. Other notable events included The World Billiard Championships with Eddie Charlton seen in 56 countries. Michael was the first person to be allowed to use the Iconic Forecourt of the Sydney Opera House for a concert with an audience of 80,000 people. Michael was a member of The Rocks Chamber of Commerce Sydney for many years serving on the Executive Board. The Rocks area of Sydney is the most visited tourist area in Australia. When Michael emigrated to Australia back in 1974 he quickly went about organizing various projects which all came to fruition and continue to this day very successfully. Michael was the first President and Chairman of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade

This parade now attracts in excess of 1 million people; from small beginnings great things happen. Michael is very proud of this distinction and to know that all these years later the Sydney St. Pattack’s Day Parade goes from strength to strength. As an entrepreneur Michael’s business career spans a wide range of interests over the years and has given him a unique approach to dealing with people/businesses while managing any situation which may arise in a very calm and ordered manner. Having completed mediation courses over the years, Michael has found this to be an invaluable asset in many facets of his business life. The future of GFD Promotions, an Irish based company, is very exciting as they head into another very busy touring season with our highly acclaimed International roster of productions. PAT MCLWAIN Pat graduated with a Masters degree in Theatre Studies (Hons) from Dublin City University in 2005. Musical Theatre roles include Motel in Fiddler on the Roof (Gaiety Theatre and National Concert Hall), Ariel in Return to the Forbidden Planet (Andrews Lane and Tivoli Theatres), Cat in the Hat in Seussical the Musical (Civic Theatre), The Wizard in The Wizard of Oz (Helix Theatre), Fagin in Oliver! (Rupert Guinness Theatre), Captain Hook in Peter Pan (Helix Theatre), Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone (The Pavilion Theatre) and Gerald in Me and My Girl (Gaiety Theatre). Theatre roles include Gar Public in Philadelphia Here I Come, Timothy Gallagher in The Communication Cord, Manus in Translations, Juan in Yerma, Sergeant in Mountain Language, and The Ghost of Cúchulainn in The Only Jealousy of Emer. Pat is one of Irelands most sought after directors. Most recently, he directed a sell-out concert, Encore, at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre which played to over 2,200 people. A keen musician, Pat can be found playing bass guitar in venues throughout Ireland with various bands. His voice can be heard on many Irish language cartoons where he has played everything from alien bananas to crazy professors on such shows as Johnny Test, Edgar agus Ellen, and Clang Invasion. He is delighted to be joining Celtic Nights and is very much looking forward to working with such a talented cast and crew. CLAIRE CREHAN (Musical Director) Claire is an accomplished pianist, singer, music educator and director. She graduated with a 1st Class Honors degree in music from UCC in 2003, and went on to graduate with 1st Class Honors from the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama with a Masters in Classical Piano Performance. As a performer, Claire has a broad musical background, ranging from jazz, classical, traditional, tango, African music and Indian music. She was a founding member of the Maynooth Gospel Choir, as a singer, accompanist, composer, and arranger. She worked as a pianist with Caroline Moreau and Oleg Pominarov in the show French Chanson Meets Russian Gypsy Music for a number of years. Her solo performances include classical piano recitals in the Peppercanister Church, Dublin and in the DIT Conservatory of Music, and more recently, solo performances of her original compositions for voice and piano, heavily rooted in Celtic music. She was the choral director and choral conductor for the Irish premiere of Madison’s Descent, a work by renowned Irish composer Micheál Ó Súileabháin in 2013, and currently codirects four community choirs, composing original music in addition to arranging contemporary music for their repertoire. She has toured with Irish singer Jack L as a singer with the Maynooth Gospel Choir, Irish singer Glen Hansard through the SpeakUp SingOut Gospel Choir under the directorship of Eimear & Claire Crehan, arranging his original music for choir. Claire joined Celtic Nights in 2011 as Musical Director and has been with the show ever since. In addition she is the Musical Director for international touring shows Celtic Angels, World of Musicals and the International Magic Tenors.
RICHARD GRIFFIN (Choreographer) Ask anyone involved with Irish dance who they would consider to be the most innovative and progressive choreographer in the world today and the name Richard Griffin would surely top the list. The Griffin School of Irish Dance is one of the most successful dance schools of all time. They have won over 35 World titles in every discipline in boys, girls, solo, ceili, dance drama and figure choreography. Their relentless quest for original formations each season has set the standard and pushed the boundaries to make World Figure Championships the most exciting event in the dance year. Richard has worked with various dance groups in Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, and Switzerland. His choreographic skills have been successfully utilized by several North American Troupes including the Chicago based Trinity Dance Company who went on to win numerous World titles with his creations. Richard has been associated with Gaelforce Dance since he first choreographed the show in Sydney in 1999. He was proud to be asked to choreograph Dance Masters, and is thrilled to be choreographing for the 4th year, Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom, with such an exciting and energetic dance corps. REBEKAH SHEARER (Co-Producer) was born in Scotland but studied in London at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. After graduating in London, she went on to work in musical theatre and choreography all around the world. Rebekah has been involved with GFD Promotions Ltd since 2012. Rebekah’s theatre credits include: Lead Singer in Celtic Arch, Dublin 2015, Lead singer in Celtic Nights USA and European Tour 2013 and 2014, Lead singer in World of Musicals China tour 2014, Thriller, Grease, Maureen in Rent, Heroes and Villains (Wimbledon Theatre) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Harmonica Blowouts started as a single event in Berkeley, CA in 1991 but has grown to be the premier Harp Event on the West Coast over the last twenty five years-a mini blues fest of touring headliners that do 10-14 day runs. These events have included a who's who of blues harp icons plus a few guitar icons to support them-Huey Lewis, John Mayall, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Elvin Bishop, Snooky Pryor, Carey Bell, John Hammond, Billy Boy Arnold, Magic Dick, Lee Oskar, Paul DeLay, Curtis Salgado, Rick Estrin, Rod Piazza, Norton Buffalo, Billy Branch, James Harman, Jr. Watson, Sam Myers, and many more have toured with these shows.
country, blues, and Tex-Mex stars, chiefly, "I'm a Lover Not a Fighter," "I Hear You Knockin'," and "Sugar Coated Love."
This year features 82 year old Louisiana blues legend and Excello recording artist Lazy Lester, Blues Brothers inspiration and former Robert Cray singer/harmonica frontman Curtis Salgado, Golden State/Lone Star Revue with guitar heroes Texan Anson Funderburgh (Anson and the Rockets) and Alligator recording artist Little Charlie Baty (Little Charlie and the Nightcats), and Grammy nominee and Blues Music Award winner, event organizer and Harpman Mark Hummel. Representing the next generation are Mumbai born mover and shaker Aki Kumar, 22 year old Rick Estrin protégée Kyle Rowland, and protégée multitalented guitar and Harp Blues Sensation Big Jon Atkinson-all great harp players. Also included are bassist RW Grigsby and Texas drumming legend Wes Starr.
Salgado’s been perfecting his craft since he first began playing professionally in the late 1960s. He fronted his own group, The Nighthawks, inspired John Belushi to create The Blues Brothers, was co-star of The Robert Cray Band and sang and toured with Roomful Of Blues. He released his first of eight solo albums in 1991, hitting the road hard year after year. Salgado and his band toured with The Steve Miller Band and Curtis spent a summer singing with Santana before being sidelined by serious health issues in 2006. He’s battled all the way back, and, after a full and complete recovery, has been tearing up concert stages all over the country.
LAZY LESTER Lazy Lester (born Leslie Johnson in Torras, Louisiana, 20 June 1933) is a swamp blues harmonica master whose half-century career spans the 1950s to the 2000s. Best known for regional hits recorded with Jay Miller's Crowley, Louisianabased Excello Records, Lester also contributed as a side-man to swamp blues classics recorded by Excello label-mates including Slim Harpo, Lightnin' Slim, and Katie Webster. His songs have been covered by (among others) The Kinks, Freddy Fender, Dwight Yoakam, Dave Edmunds, Raful Neal, Anson Funderburgh, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. In the "comeback" stage of his career (since the late 1980s) he has recorded new albums backed by, among others, Mike Buck, Sue Foley, Gene Taylor, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, and Jimmie Vaughan (ex-Fabulous Thunderbirds brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan). Lazy Lester earned his name because of his laconic, laid-back style. CURTIS SALGADO Award-winning vocalist/ songwriter/harmonica icon Curtis Salgado sings and plays with soulful authority, never giving less than 100 percent. He plays each and every show like it’s the most important gig of his career.
Winner of the 2010 Blues Music Award for Soul Blues Artist Of The Year, Salgado effortlessly mixes blues, funk and R&B with a delivery that is raw and heartfelt. He moves with ease from the tenderest ballads to the most full-throated stompers. Blues Revue says, “Salgado is one of the most down-to-earth, soulful, honest singers ever, and his harmonica work is smoking and thoroughly invigorating...rollicking, funky and electrifying.” With Alligator Records debut, Soul Shot, Salgado has reached the largest audience of his career. ANSON FUNDERBURGH Anson Funderburgh, a native of Texas, has spent the majority of his adult life playing the blues, with influences from blues legends such as Freddie King, Albert Collins, Jimmy Reed and Bill Doggett. Anson has earned the respect of artists like Delbert McClinton, Boz Scaggs, Jimmie & Stevie Ray Vaughan and Ronnie Earl. Over the years, these musicians have called on Anson to lend his tremendous guitar talents to their projects. Funderburgh recorded with the Fabulous Thunderbirds on
Mark Hummel's Blues Harmonica Blowout their Butt Rockin' album, and went solo in 1981, when the New Orleans-based BlackTop label released Talk to You by Hand, the label's first release. Funderburgh added Myers on harmonica and lead vocals in 1986. Myers had traveled for years on the chitlin circuit, where he had the chance to accompany people like Elmore James and Robert Junior Lockwood. Funderburgh admits that adding Myers on vocals and harmonica was a turning point for the Rockets, partly because of the image they project from the stage, a big towering black man and three white guys backing him up. Funderburgh continued his association in the '90s with Black Top releasing Tell Me What I Want to Hear (1991), Live at Grand Emporium (1995), and That's What They Want (1997). After releasing nine albums on Black Top, in 1999 Funderburgh changed record labels with the release of Change in my Pocket for Bullseye Blues, a CD which won several W.C. Handy Awards. Since the passing of long time musical partner Sam Myers, Anson has concentrated on raising a family, working very local gigs and performing at a smattering of festivals around the world. Now Anson has caught a renewed dose of the performing bug and will begin to perform more regularly with the distinct possibility of regular tours in the coming years. LITTLE CHARLIE BATY Little Charlie Batty is the former leader and masterful guitarist from Alligator Records recording act “Little Charlie & the Nightcats.” Charlie and the Nightcats have recorded 12 albums on Alligator and have been one of the West Coast’s most successful blues acts, touring the globe for over 25 years. They’ve played every major Festival you can think of and every blues joint from Maine to Spain. He’s been part of Golden State-Lone Star Revue with Mark Hummel, Anson Funderburgh, Wes Star & RW Grigsby plus doing Blowout gigs with Mr. Hummel the last three years. Guitar World declares, “Baty’s straight blues playing is eyepopping... he stretches solos to the breaking point, skittering on the edge, where one wrong note will bring the whole thing crashing down.” “Little Charlie Baty plays as much guitar as Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy put together,” raves The Village Voice. “He is one of the swiftest, most fluent guitarists working in any genre." AKI KUMAR Dynamic frontman & harp player Aki Kumar is a rising star among the next generation of SF Bay Area blues artists. A master of the amplified Chicago blues sound, Kumar inherits his style from the harp legends of the 1950s and 60s. Aki has a unique voice in the blues, blending elements of blues harmonica pioneers of yesteryear with a signature sound of his own. Born and raised in Bombay, India, Kumar established his mark

on the West Coast blues scene starting in 2009 as frontman of the SF Bay Area's highly acclaimed blues outfit Tip of the Top. His latest venture, The Aki Kumar Blues Band, involves several Bay Area blues luminaries and has been the culmination of his journey through American roots music. The band performs vintage blues with tremendous skill and energy and is guaranteed to entertain audiences across all venues, from intimate listening rooms to large festivals. When not performing under his own name, Aki Kumar can also be found working with the heavy-hittin' blues band, Little Jonny and The Giants. BIG JOHN ATKINSON In 1988 Jon Atkinson was born into the digital cyber age. He grew up in a world full of children playing video games while adults were watching all manners of YouTube videos on their computers. The young man had no use for any of those things and pursued a singular passion, making blues music. He was moved by a language that is rarely spoken in this day and age. He was inspired by a sound seldom heard. He worked to create this music using the great masters of the past as the mentors who would guide him to great heights in the blues world in a very short time. Al Blake, a founding member of The Hollywood Fats Band, and an accomplished singer, harmonica player guitarist, songwriter, producer and band leader in his own right, puts it this way, “Not since I first met Hollywood Fats in the early 70’s have I have heard someone who seems to be born with the DNA that it takes to be a truly great blues musician. Jon is not only an exceptional singer and guitarist; he is also a great harmonica player who plays bass and drums quite well. He has a total understanding of the entire ensemble approach to making blues music. In other words he has the ability to not only be a versatile side man, but an effective band leader as well.” In May of 2014 Atkinson released his debut album entitled, Boogie With You Baby on Bluebeat Music. KYLE ROWLAND “Blues harmonica player of the year” and “Blues New Artist of The Year” in 2009 from the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame, Kyle Rowland, has been dominating the stage since the tender age of 10 years old. Beginning his career sitting in and receiving lessons from the hit Sacramento band, Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers, for seven consecutive years, Kyle quickly and naturally developed his own sound. With help from a few of his heroes such as James Cotton, Hubert Sumlin, Matt “Guitar” Murphy and many others, Kyle learned specific techniques of stage presence, the music business, and several highly revered harmonica secrets. Mark Hummel's Blues Harmonica Blowout Band dishes out a sauté of boisterous Chicago and swampy Texas blues with a pinch of West Coast swing. Danceable and listenable, this show will have you wanting more with your toes tapping into the next morning. In May of 2012 they recorded their first CD titled, High Rollin with Kyle Rowland. Produced by world renown harmonica extraordinaire Rick Estrin and recorded live by Kid Andersen at Greaseland studios in San Jose, CA, it is currently being featured on radio shows throughout countries such as Germany, England, and Australia and receiving high ranking reviews. Kyle Rowland has performed as a guest musician at the Sacramento Music Festival with Mick Martin and The Blues Rockers. His performances spread further to include Monterey Bay Blues Festival, California State Fair, Kenny Neal’s Family and Friends Heritage Blues Festival in LA and Sacramento, San Jose Jazz Fest, Annual Blues Harvest in Woodland, and various local and regional establishments like Laughs Unlimited, Beatnik Studios, colleges, charitable benefits, and more. He is a musician who loves being on stage and performing and says that perhaps he got a feel for the limelight as a youth in kindergarten performing in Three Little Pigs opera singing “Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin.” He happily admits he loves interacting with the audience, watching them enjoy the music and feel the beauty of the blues. MARK HUMMEL Grammy nominee, Blues Award winner, Author, Harp Man Mark Hummel had a banner year in 2014! Grammy Nominated for his Remembering Little WalterCD he produced and performed on, Mark also won Best Blues CD AND Blues Traditional Blues CD at Blues Music Awards in Memphis. Mark's, "The Hustle Is Really On" climbed to # 2 this year and stayed in the top five for four months in the Living Blues Radio Charts. Hummel's book "BIG ROAD BLUES:12 Bars on I-80," has been garnering rave reviews all around the U.S., and was nominated for best Independent Book release. Mark Hummel started playing harmonica in 1970 and has gone on to become one of the premier blues harmonica players of his generation, thanks to over thirty recordings since 1985, including the Grammy nominated 2013 release Blind Pig recording Remembering Little Walter, part of the Blues Harmonica Blowout CD series Hummel started in 1991. These events have featured every major legend (Mayall, Musslwhite, Cotton, etc.) on blues harp as well as almost every player of note on the instrument- a who's who of players. Mark Hummel is a road warrior-a true Blues Survivor. Along the way, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound -a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack combined with a strong sense of swing. Mark has been with Electro Fi Records since 2000, releasing five CDs. Thanks to Mark's earlier albums, constant touring and appearances at the major blues festivals, he's firmly established his solid reputation around the US and Europe. Hummel was born in New Haven, CT but raised in Los Angeles until he graduated high school. Mark moved to the Berkeley 36 WINTER 2016 PROGRAM GUIDE www.harriscenter.net

at age 18 to pursue a career in blues music, where he felt the music was taken more seriously. Mark started the Blues Survivors in 1977 w/Mississippi Johnny Waters. By 1984 Hummel began a life of non-stop touring of US, Canada, and overseas, which he still continues at least 130-150 days out of each year. Hummel has toured or recorded with blues legends Charles Brown, Charlie Musselwhite, Lowell Fulson, Billy Boy Arnold, Carey Bell, Lazy Lester, Brownie McGhee, Eddie Taylor, Luther Tucker and Jimmy Rogers. Hummel penned a memoir in 2012 for Mountain Top Publishing, "BIG ROAD BLUES: Twelve Bar On I-80," to which Huey Lewis says "This book should be required reading for ANY aspiring blues musician, LOVED it!" The memoir has been heralded in Blues Revue, Living Blues plus many blues publications coast to coast. Besides the Blowouts Hummel has continued the Blues Survivors plus an All Star side project called Golden State/ Lone Star Revue w/Anson Funderburgh and Little Charlie Baty. This group appears on Hummel's brand new ElectroFi CD The Hustle Is Really On. Mark has had three Blues Award nominations for best Blues Harmonica (2007, 2008 & 2009) plus the Little Walter CD has garnered two nominations in 2014 for Best CD & Best Traditional CD.

SUSAN STROMAN (Original Director/ Choreographer) is a five-time Tony Award®-winning director and choreographer; her work in the Broadway production of Bullets Over Broadway was recognized with a Tony Award® nomination for Best Choreography. She has been honored with Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel, and a record five Astaire Awards. In 2014 she made her Metropolitan Opera debut, directing and choreographing The Merry Widow, starring Renée Fleming. International Guitar Night featuring Lulo Reinhardt, Mike Dawes, André Krengel, and Brian Gore
Wednesday, February 10, 2016; 7:30 pm For the January/February 2016 North American tour, IGN founder Brian Gore will be joined by three of Europe's finest acoustic guitarists: Gypsy Jazz legend Lulo Reinhardt, contemporary fingerstyle innovator Mike Dawes, and multigenre showman André Krengel. Lulo has expanded on the legacy of his grand-uncle Django with Latin-flavored rhythms and melodies. Mike's lightning-speed and deft tapping and percussion were among the highlights of the 2014 IGN tour. Andre is a master of many styles from flamenco to swing to modern ballads and he is a frequent collaborator with Lulo in Germany. We are looking forward to a particularly dynamic evening of contemporary guitar music. LULO REINHARDT Django Reinhardt left behind an indelible musical legacy, introducing and defining a passionate style of gypsy jazz guitar that was astonishing in the 1930's and is still revered and emulated today. Born to a Gypsy family in Belgium, Django's playing inspired his extended family in Germany and France, and successive generations of Reinhardts have reinforced his powerful musical vision and added their own ideas. Lulo Reinhardt, Django's grand nephew, is a third generation master from Germany. He has retained the incredible Reinhardt soul, speed and dexterity and updated the repertoire. Lulo was first taught by his father at the age of five. At twelve, he played in the Mike Reinhardt Sextett and later co-founded the group, Django Reinhardt and the Heartbreakers. In 1991, he founded I Gitanos with his father Bawo and cousin Dege, touring throughout Europe and first establishing his national reputation. Lulo is a spontaneous and spirited musician. His curiosity took him to southern Spain in search of flamenco roots, and to South America, exploring various musical styles of Latin jazz. By 2002, he was ready to take his place as a bandleader, founding the Lulo Reinhardt Project. They recorded the highly-acclaimed Project No. 1 in 2002, and Project No. 2 in 2005, reflecting his passion for Latin music. Saga Instruments of San Francisco CA made the first Lulo Reinhardt Model Gitane 310, modeled on the classic Gypsy guitars in 2007. This inspired Lulo to compose more swing material, which he combined with Latin music, and in 2007 changed the name of his group to the Lulo Reinhardt Latin Swing Project. They recorded their first CD in 2008. In the beginning, he played in Europe with an all-German band but later spent considerable time in Australia, forming a new band of German and Australian musicians. They recorded Live In Melbourne in 2008 and Katoomba Birds in 2010.
The Lulo Reinhardt Latin Swing Project has an extensive international touring history. In additional to annual Australian tours beginning in 2008, they have played in the United States, China, France, Switzerland, Belgium, England, the Czech Republic, Scotland and Germany. Lulo has also performed as a soloist with the International Guitar Night troupe in 2009 and 2011, going to Canada, America and the UK. The Latin Swing Project headlined the inaugural U.S. tour of In The Footsteps Of Django in 2012. MIKE DAWES Mike Dawes is hailed as one of the world’s finest and most creative m o d e r n f i n g e rs t y l e g u i t a r performers. His acclaimed solo music has gained over 10 million hits on popular video sharing sites, but Mike is not considered a ‘YouTube act.’ Since the release of his debut album in 2013 he has toured almost every continent on the planet, bringing his hyper technical, yet intrinsically musical instrumental performance to tens of thousands globally. He has recorded with and even taught multiple grammy wining artists, appeared on film and TV soundtracks, released apps, transcribed for international music magazines and currently performs alongside the legendary frontman of The Moody Blues, Justin Hayward, the debut live DVD of which entered the Billboard charts at #2. Musicians including Steve Vai, Gotye and James Valentine (Maroon 5) have all spoken of their admiration towards his work. Mike needs to be seen live to be believed. His ability to create the most unusual tones and textures from a single acoustic guitar leaves fellow musicians stunned. To quote the Maroon 5 guitarist, ‘What's going on? It's beautiful!'

International Guitar Night ANDRÉ KRENGEL André Krengel, who was born in a small village outside Bonn, Germany, playing guitar is a journey; and music is a language that connects us to people without words. He is a versatile and virtuosic guitar player who is mainly self taught, with his own unique style of playing, and is one of the foremost, leading and prominent players in Germany. His parents loved classical music. So, as a child, he became influenced by the many recordings played at home of composers like J.S. Bach. But he became inspired by other artists as well - especially by the jazzy blues-rock stylings of Mark Knopfler & Dire Straits. Through that inspiration, at the age of 14, he was drawn to pick up his mother’s acoustic guitar and start learning chords and melodies. At the age of 15, the circumstances in his life suddenly changed, and he was more or less on his own. At this time, the guitar became very important; because playing music on the instrument had a stabilizing and comforting impact on his life. He quickly reached a good technical level and at the age of 17, he started gigging with local bands-playing blues, 70s and 80s rock and NeoClassical hard rock. Two years later, he discovered his passion for acoustic guitar and jazz music. He took jazz guitar lessons from Gregor Salz and started studying jazz and pop music at the conservatory of Arnhem in the Netherlands. To make a living, he also was giving guitar lessons at a music school. But just teaching and studying soon became boring. So, he quit, and started to travel, playing his first international gigs and small concerts in Spain and the South France. In Barcelona, André performed with artists like Monica Green (ex-Supremes), Marcello Matte and rock-vocalist Danny Veras. Living in Spain, André took the chance to play with flamenco players and learn from them. It was also in Barcelona when he met and performed with Gypsy-jazz masters Robin Nolan and Biel Ballester. André also spent three years in Florida, touring with the Ft. Lauderdale based band The Orphans. During that time, he was inspired and influenced by numerous jam sessions with musicians on the Miami Latin and Cuban music-scene, as well as by performing with Leon Wilkinson and the new line up of Lynnard Skynnard, in Jacksonville. All of these influences-jazz, flamenco, gypsy-jazz, rhythm and blues and good old fashioned rock and roll-are woven into his unique style. Since returning to Germany, André has been involved in many different projects. He was frequently asked to back up singers in concerts and TV shows−like Rod Stewart and Gloria Gaynor, Deidra Jones as well as several German-based artists. He’s also been known to play on 5-star cruise ships that sail down the Rhein, and in elite private galas all over Europe. He was also guitar player and Musical Director of the famous clown, Andrej Jigalov’s showband; and, for the German-Brazilian pop singer Daniel Lopes. He also composed several pieces of music for other artists and TV commercials, short movies and played on many CDs being a studio guitarist. In 2004 founded his own band Acoustic Embassy, which tours widely throughout Europe. This band integrates a wide range of sounds, based on moods of latin, pop, jazz and flamenco, to Django Reinhardt`s swing and even unplugged techno. continued BRIAN GORE San Francisco guitar poet Brian Gore is gaining a reputation as one of the most interesting and influential performers of "the next generation" in fingerstyle guitar. A musical romantic, his compositions draw inspiration from myth and modern literature. Hailed as having "...one of the most unique new acoustic guitar styles on the scene today" (News and Review), his lyrical, understated compositions integrate classical and percussive techniques that display what the Los Angeles Times calls "a characterful bounce and spaciousness all his own." Gore’s style of playing offers strikingly beautiful tone and dynamics−qualities that are often hard to find in steel string players. His melodic, evocative songs rely heavily on the use of open tunings, extending the “stream of consciousness” style of guitar composing he grew up with in Northern California. “Music started out as a kind of therapy for me,” says Gore. “Consequently, I am a very emotional player. Now, my style of playing has also become a well honed craft. I am very grateful I can share this with people.” His buoyant personality and odd sense of humor help add lightness to his shows. “By the time I’m done with a performance,” explains Gore, “people really know the meaning of the term ‘extroverted introvert.’" While Gore integrates some of the flashier percussive techniques into his pieces, the poetic quality of his music is preserved. “Because my music is simple and somewhat rootsy, it’s easy to relate to, which is something I’m thankful for. Also, it helps keep me grounded.” Gore's recent CD + postcard release is called Santa Cruz in Song and Image. He is currently expanding upon his work with illustrator Bill Russell on an online series of videos and original songs plus multimedia show called Wine Country: A Pairing of Music and Art. He has two additional solo releases, including “Legacy” and “Path of Least Resistance.” Brian founded The International Guitar Night in 1995 as a forum for the world's finest guitarists/composers to play their latest original songs and share musical ideas with their peers in public concert. This has evolved into critically acclaimed annual tours in the US (starting in 2000), Canada (starting in 2006) and the UK (starting in 2007), a CD on Favored Nations Records released in 2004, a guitar instruction book published in 2005, and IGN releases on Warner Music Canada. General Information Smoking is prohibited inside and within 30 feet of building entrances. As a courtesy to other patrons who may have fragrance allergies, please avoid wearing strong perfumes or cologne. To limit disturbance to artists and fellow audience members, late arrivals may be asked to wait until a suitable break in the performance, or intermission, to be seated. Doctors expecting calls during performances should leave their names and seat locations with the House Manager. Photography and Recording The photographing and sound or video recording of any performance, without the explicit permission of management, is prohibited. Offenders may be ejected and liable for damages. Ticket Office Open Monday-Saturday, noon to 6 pm and two hours before show times. Tickets also available online at www.harriscenter.net or by calling (916) 608-6888. E-mail list Already have an account? If not, set up one at www.harriscenter. net and receive e-news about events, added performances, and special offers. Parking Ample event parking is located adjacent to the Harris Center. Parking permits are required for events taking place anytime Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays before 5pm. A parking permit is issued automatically with your ticket order for events during those times. Please place your permit in a visible location on your dashboard when you arrive at the events. Permits are not required Friday after 5 pm or on Saturday or Sunday. Permits are not provided for free events. House Notes Emergency exits are indicated by green exit signs located above each exit. For your safety, please check for the location of the exit nearest to your seat. As a courtesy to artists and other patrons, please turn off or silence cellular phones, pagers, or wristwatch alarms before start of the event, and refrain from texting during the performance. Three sets of restrooms are located on the Stage Two end of the lobby, one upstairs and two downstairs. Snacks and beverages are available before performances and at intermission at the Wells Fargo CafĂŠ located near the electronic donor wall, and at satellite service stations in the lobby. Food and beverages are not allowed in the theaters (bottled water is okay).

Use of a ticket at the Harris Center constitutes acknowledgement of willingness to appear in photographs, video, and film taken in public areas of the facility and releases the Center, its Partners, and all others from liability resulting from use of such images. Lost and Found Items Lost items will be held in the Coat Check room in the lobby until the end of the performance. Thereafter, please call (916) 6086888. Unclaimed items will be turned into FLC Campus Police Department after thirty days. Accessibility and Listening Devices The Center is accessible to patrons with disabilities. Wheelchair seating is available in all venues. Portable wireless listening devices are available with a small, refundable deposit or a driver’s license. Please inform the Ticket Office of any special needs when ordering tickets. Children All patrons are required to have a ticket, including youngsters sitting on laps. Parents are expected to take into account the subject and nature of performances when selecting shows for their children, and to make sure etiquette is part of the theatre going experience. Parents will be asked to remove disruptive children. Presentations, Partners, and Productions The Harris Center for the Arts strives to inspire, include, and instruct. Through its PRESENTATIONS, the Center brings touring artists from around the world. PARTNERS are local and regional music, theatre, and dance companies who make the Center their home. PRODUCTIONS deepen the educational experience of Folsom Lake College, giving students and faculty an opportunity to develop their craft and present it to family, friends, and the broader community.
