If it’s your first time to the Center, we’re glad that you’ve decided to give us a try, and hope you’ll be back once you’ve experienced a great show, up close, in one of our three state-of-the art venues (page 9). If you’re returning, you may be one of the over 3,000 Harris Center patrons that took part in a community survey this past spring and told us that they overwhelmingly feel the Center is a high caliber regional facility with affordably priced programs of interest to the people in this community, that the center is something they are proud of and that has been a good investment for the community.

And yet, having just celebrated the Center’s fifth anniversary, we’re just getting going. Ultimately, the ability of the Center to fully realize the potential inherent in its design and intent will require additional investment. Please consider joining your neighbors (pages 54-55) in supporting the Center through an annual membership donation or seat naming (page 55), corporate sponsorship (page 58), or legacy gift (page 55). Ticket revenues alone simply do not cover all the costs of providing a world-class arts center; we need people like you to help out, to further expand the reach and impact of the Harris Center in this community.

Since receiving its initial accreditation in 2004, Folsom Lake College has provided exceptional educational opportunities to the growing communities of eastern Sacramento and western El Dorado counties. The college currently serves approximately 8,700 students each semester at the main Folsom campus, the El Dorado Center in Placerville, and the Rancho Cordova Center. Each of these sites has its own identity, its own personality.

Due to tremendous growth of the Folsom region, the main Folsom campus quickly expanded to keep up with the demand for quality education. The modern 151-acre campus is also active with social, cultural, and athletic opportunities for its student body. The Falcon’s Roost is the center of student life and home to the college’s energetic student government and clubs.

The renowned Harris Center for the Arts allows talented students to train with the best in a professional setting. And the growing athletic programs have brought competition and camaraderie to the Falcons athletics complex.

The El Dorado Center is located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada foothills.

This scenic and serene campus is wellequipped to serve the area’s recent high school graduates along with a more mature audience devoted to lifelong learning. The site is also home to two unique community partnerships, the Cameron Park Rotary Club Community Observatory and the Sherwood Demonstration Garden. The center is outfitted to meet the educational needs of students both in and out of the classroom.

The recently opened Rancho Cordova Center facility, located at the corner of Folsom Blvd. and Paseo Dr. and across the street from the Mather Field/Mills Station light rail, now serves as an educational hub for this close knit and diverse community. Students can pursue their general education requirements or learn English as a second language.

This central location will also enable the college to adeptly respond to local and state business needs by developing programs that teach the fundamental skills that are vital to working in the public sector.

Inside the Harris Center for the Arts: Three Stages and more...

Stage One: 850-seat Theater. With a 46-foot proscenium, full stage house, and orchestra pit, this is a venue capable of presenting all of the arts, from Broadway to symphonies, contemporary dance to world music. Stage One puts the art close to the audience.

In addition to its three stages, this $50 million, 80,000 square foot regional arts complex contains:

Bank of America Gallery. A wonderful space located near the front entrance to provide visual art exhibitions national, regional, local, and student.

Black Box. A flexible space perfect for a rehearsal, a sit-down dinner, to teach a class, or to create a work of art.

Recording Studio. One of the largest in the capital region. Most every space in the center can be recorded live, audio or visual, at the press of a button.

Guild Mortgage Lobby. A unique gathering place for the audience, for friends, for a conversation with the artist afterwards.

Ample auxiliary spaces including rehearsal spaces, scene shop, costume shop, classrooms, and more.

Stage Two: 200-seat City Studio Theater. Named by the City of Folsom, the City Studio has gently raked seating and, like the larger theater next door, there's not a bad seat in the house.

Spotlight on Folsom Lake College: Choral Music

FLC’s College Choir Puts a Tingle in Your Feet!

“The Rhythm of Life is a powerful beat, Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet!” If you’ve ever seen Folsom Lake College’s own College Choir and College Chorus perform, you’ve no doubt felt that tingle as they perform their signature song, “The Rhythm of Life.”

But if you want to challenge yourself, try mimicking the complex hand gestures that accompany this lively and infectious piece of showmanship!

This song, performed at every concert, demonstrates the kind of exuberance that characterizes the choir and its director, Dr. David Newnham. After a couple of stops as a college administrator at American River College and Folsom Lake College, Dr. Newnham returned to his first love, choral directing, in 2014.

His “students first” attitude has paid off: choir membership has skyrocketed.

Newnham strategically offers both a daytime choir and a nighttime chorus so that full-time students and those with other commitments, like jobs and families, can all participate. He rehearses both groups separately and brings them together seamlessly for concerts and other appearances.

And audience appreciation has grown as well: for the first time the choir is performing in the larger Stage 1 venue of the Harris Center to accommodate the groups' increasingly large and devoted following.

Described as a “Y’all come” group by Newnham, membership in the college choir is open to all students and community members, regardless of background or musical training. This, of course, makes the group’s musical proficiency all the more amazing.

Rehearsals are fast-paced and energetic, and Newnham’s attention to the finer details of choral singing is interspersed with interesting tidbits of music theory, background information on the songs, and individual and group instruction.

Undergirding this all is Newnham’s co-instructor and piano accompanist Shelley Rink, who shares his passion for students and musical artistry.

The college and community have rewarded the choir with greater visibility and opportunities to perform. The group even made a featured appearance at the annual SacSings Festival in April alongside such award-winning choirs as Voices of California, Vocal Art Ensemble, and Sacramento Master Singers. The chance to perform in such a prestigious event is an opportunity rarely afforded to college singers. Future performances will pair the college choir with local high school choirs, giving them the chance of a lifetime: to perform on the acoustically superb stage of the Harris Center for the Arts.

CARRERA PRODUCTIONS A Harris Center community partner since 2011, Mary Carrera of Carrera Productions has been providing exceptionally high quality events, concert productions, event management, and marketing services for over 12 years. From initial planning to managing every detail of talent search, negotiations, marketing, sponsorship, management, and logistics — Carrera Productions brings a wealth of experience to ensure each event is the best it can be.

Some of the most respected arts organizations in the region have made the Center their home. These partners share the goal of improving the quality of life in the region by providing access to more art for more audiences in the newest arts facility in the region.

Mary’s experience with event production and management draws on her successful experience of 20 years in managing regional marketing, events, and promotions for the demanding telecommunications industry with such companies as HBO, Showtime, Country Music Television (CMT), VH-1, Discovery Channel, and more.

With Carrera Productions, she has been responsible for creating and/or managing a multitude of well-known and successful events in the region such as the El Dorado Hills Art & Wine Affaire, Coloma Blues Live! (from inception through 2010), Folsom Rhythm & Brews, the Folsom Chamber’s Folsom LIVE (as a collaborator) and, of course, a very successful run of concerts at the Harris Center which have included a who’s who of blues/ rock artists (Tab Benoit, John Mayall, Elvin Bishop, George Thorogood, the Blues Broads, Keb Mo and Taj Mahal, to name a few) as well as a wide range of other artists ranging from the Gin Blossums to Los Lonely Boys, Lukas Nelson to eclectic guitarists Eric Johnson and Mike Stern, The Blind Boys of Alabama, etc.

SBL also curates and promotes quality live entertainment throughout the Sacramento region and the west coast. The variety of groups presented and the quality of the experience with SBL keeps artists and fans coming back for more.

The man behind the scenes is Scott Brill-Lehn who takes each show from on-sale to sellout and covers every aspect along the way, from negotiating the right fee for each artist to keeping tickets reasonably priced. Scott also coordinates marketing and publicity with the goal of making sure every event is packed. His productions and hospitality give his shows a professional edge and keep artists and fans coming back time and time again.

Her theater accomplishments include Crowns, Sophisticated Ladies and the award-winning one-woman-show Jackie ‘Moms’ Mabley: The Naked Truth. Jesse Jackson and many more; she was the opening vocalist at the 2006 Detroit Mayoral Inauguration.“ Boston’s chops carry the set. REBECCA FISHER (Soap Star) has loved playing Soap Star on and off since 2005 when she joined the Orlando cast.

Since that time, Rebecca has performed the show in Singapore, Canada, and all over the United States. MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL ® SUE HILL (Assistant Stage Manager/Costume Designer) has been designing and creating clothes, costumes and home textiles since she discovered her grandmother’s treadle sewing machine at the age of 9. She began her career as a studio artist in textiles, graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design and has exhibited wearable art and maintained a business designing custom clothing and costumes for national touring musical group and theatrical productions. She has toured as wardrobe supervisor and Equity Stage Manager. Sue is the National Costume Designer for GFour Productions, designing costumes and props for MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL®, Respect and MOTHERHOOD THE MUSICAL®.

DARIA LYNNE MELENDEZ (Choreography Supervised By) Originally from Massachusetts. This gal has been a studio owner, a professional dancer and choreographer for over 4 decades. Education, judging and coaching have been her passions through her career. She has appeared on Broadway and National television performances. She has taught for Dance Masters of America and many dance programs throughout the U.S. Having the privilege of performing with Maurice and Gregory Hines have been one of the high points she holds close to her heart. Daria has choreographed industrial shows for Lipton and Tupperwear. In the 1980’s Daria worked closely with recording artists Expose in Miami, Florida. Currently Daria is GFour Production’s choreographer for the hit show, MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL®, training over 300 actors over the years. Teaching ballroom dancing with her husband Nelson keeps her on her toes. Daria enjoys training young dancers in all styles of dance, preparing them for a well rounded career in performing arts.

Top 100 Albums of the Year; contributed a cover of “Sylvia’s Mother” to the compilation Twistable Turnable Man - A Tribute to Shel Silverstein; “I’ll Give You a Ring” was featured in the film The Winning Season starring Sam Rockwell on Lionsgate Films, and donated a version of “Little Boxes,” the theme song for the Showtime comedy Weeds second season.

Teddy Andreadis, J.D. Andrew and Billy Bob “Bud” Thornton make up The Boxmasters; an American roots-rock band of seasoned musicians whose sound is rich in rhythm and story.

Formed in 2007, the band released the self-titled debut record The Boxmasters to critical acclaim. This two-CD set was comprised of original songs – including the Americana Radio hit “The Poor House” – and eclectic covers of tunes by The Beatles, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Mott The Hoople and Mel Tillis.

After touring the country in 2008, The Boxmasters released a Christmas album – Christmas Cheer – and by April of 2009 had released their third album – Modbilly (a term that they coined as their style of music which was influenced by 60’s British mod music and influences from Southern American music, both pop and country). This was yet another double album that spun to the top of the Americana charts for two weeks. Modbilly later was ranked #14 on the 2009 Americana Music Association’s Top 100 Albums of The Year.

In 2015, The Boxmasters returned to the road for 2 tours across the U.S. and released both Somewhere Down The Road – another double album that was named to Rolling Stone’s “30 Best Country Records You Probably Haven’t Heard” – as well as Providence which was a www.theBoxmasters.com exclusive.

And The World – released in the summer of 2016 on NDR Records, along with another aggressive tour schedule that kicked off in August in Texas, winds through The South and Midwest before heading North of the border into Western Canada and ending back up on the West Coast.

Venue performances include performing on The Grand Ole Opry in 2015, Tony LaRussa’s Animal Rescue Foundation’s Benefit in 2009 and 2011, hosting/performing for The Country Music Hall of Fame’s All For The Hall, a Benefit in New York City in 2008; and Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble twice as well as Levon’s concert Ramble at The Ryman. Other highlights include Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth, Texas, with ZZ Top as the opening act, being the opening act for Willie Nelson and Family and the Ray Price tour, also pening for The Steve Miller Band in Virginia Beach in 2015, a “Virtual Concert” at Michael Nesmith’s Video Ranch, the Harley Davidson “Hog Rally” in Milwaukee, the BMI Showcase at The Sundance Music Festival, and multiple SXSW showcases.

The Band Teddy Andreadis He has shared the stage with legendary artists from Guns N' Roses, Carole King, Alice Cooper, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, to B.B. King and others. He has been a long-time counselor and mentor at Rock and Roll Fantasy camps, and released a solo album Innocent Loser in 2012.

J.D. Andrew J.D. is a Grammy Award-winning recording engineer whose credits include The Rolling Stones, Kanye West, The Pussycat Dolls, Will Kimbrough, Tommy Womack, Guy Clark, and more.

He co-founded The Boxmasters in 2007.

“Bud” Thornton "Bud" has recorded four solo albums, Private Radio, Edge Of The World, Hobo, and Beautiful Door. He has performed on numerous recordings including Warren Zevon’s Grammy-winning album The Wind, the legendary Earl Scruggs’ Earl Scrug Scruggs and Friends, and Anchored In Love: A Tribute to June Carter Cash.

Most recently Thornton co-wrote the song “The Middle of Nowhere” with Tony Joe White on his album Rain Crow.

In the same year, The Balance Arts of Acrobatic Gymnastics won the Golden Lion award and Acrobatics on pole won the Silver Lion Award at the fourth National Acrobatic Competition. Snow Carpets Twirling won the Silver Lion award plus the prize of creation and Acrobatics on Pole won the Silver Award at the 1998's third National Juvenile Acrobatic Competition. Also, the troupe's Acrobatics on Pole won the Silver Clown Award at Monte Carlo International Circus Festival in 2009. In August 2010, the company's Four Girls' Contortion and Aerial Ring both won the Silver awards at the 3rd Hanoi International Circus Festival in Vietnam.

After more than 50 years' efforts, it has become one of the most influential and competitive acrobatic companies in China, and has won many awards at the acrobatic and circus competitions at home and abroad.

Through the frequent activities of the international tours and performances, the troupe has not only introduced Chinese acrobatic and circus art worldwide, but also promoted the friendships with the peoples of various countries. In 1999 and 2000, the company toured Germany and the Netherlands as The Great Chinese State Circus for seven months. In the past15 years, the company and its acts have performed for tours of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 2002/03, Mystere of Cirque du Soleil at Treasure Island Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, and Stardust's World Christmas circuses in Germany and Netherlands for 2011/12. From 2004 until 2010, the troupe performed for seven years as a permanent six month show each year at Rixos Hotel in Turkey. In 2012, its forty acrobats performed a tour in Canada with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony's 52 pieces orchestra. The company also performed ERA, a permanent show of over fifty performers as Shanghai Acrobats in Xinyang, one of China's tourist cities for three years from 2012 until 2014. The tour of Shanghai Acrobats of the People's Republic of China 2016 will bring the company to the coast to coast performances in North America and will be the debut of Shanghai Nights!

Opening A dreaming boy enters into a world of fantasy in which he sees a beautiful fairy phoenix that flies over the sea, wings splashing the waves along the coast. The dreaming boy is attracted by the beauty and runs into the water.

Saxophone music wakes up the dreaming boy. He is in a forest of fairy trees that are all shining and light. The boy looks for the fairy phoenix he dreamed about and painfully finds a piece of her feathers. At the moment of his desperation, the phoenix, reborn from the fire, appears and the call of love returns to the young couple.

Act I The fairy phoenix finds the boy who jumps into the sea and is touched by his courage. She saves the boy and invites him to fly with her up to the warm sun and down into the wonderful sea world.

The leadership of the dance company is currently transmitted through matrilineal succession and with the passing of Edith Kanaka‘ole, her daughters Pualani Kanaka‘ole Kanahele and Nālani Kanaka‘ole assumed the role of 'kumu hula.' In 2007, Pualani relinquished her position to her daughters, Kekuhi Keali‘ikanaka‘oleohaililani and Huihui Kanahele-Mossman, who, along with Nālani, became the 'kumu hula' of the hālau.

In December 2014, Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole had an 'aha ni'o, an ascension ritual to inherit the role of 'kumu hula' of Halau O Kekuhi alongside her grandaunt and aunt.

Hālau o Kekuhi is the hālau hula (classical dance company) and the center of cultural knowledge for Edith Kanaka‘ole Foundation. The cultural beliefs and practices in which EKF is anchored radiates from the traditional practices of the hālau hula that can account for eight generations of 'kumu hula' (hula masters).

Hālau o Kekuhi is celebrated for its mastery of the ‘aiha‘a style of hula (dance) and 'oli' (chant). The ‘aiha‘a is a low-postured, vigorous, bombastic style of hula that springs from the eruptive volcano persona Pele and Hi‘iaka, characteristic of Hawai‘i Island’s creative forces. Hālau o Kekuhi has earned local, state, national, and international recognition for their art.

In 2015, Kaumakaiwa was awarded a highly-regarded 2015 Native Hawaiian Artist Fellowship by the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation. During her fellowship year, she will choreograph, collaborate, and compose new chant verses and stage presentations with her family to create bodies of work ready to tour in 2016. “It is the vision of our matriarch that we revolutionize the performance and secular aspect of hula for the greater public to witness,” said Kanaka’ole. “Composing is an ongoing process for me. It is our plan to include a musical segment into the performances we plan for hālau touring, with original songs as well as songs that are significant in my family.”

The Hālau O Kekuhi touring group consists of eight dancers (men & women), led by two ho‘opa‘a (drummer & chanter — (the culture-bearers). Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole, one of the chanters, is also a renowned vocalist and Na Hoku Hanohano winner (Hawai'i's music awards).

The lilting “You Still Get to Me” marks Black’s third duet with his wife, actress Lisa Hartman Black. “Calling It News” is a wry, topical statement. “The Trouble” is colored

by Australian slang.

Clint Black is back. The multi-million selling country mega-star is releasing On Purpose, his first full-length album of new songs in a decade and he’s doing it on his own terms.

“To me, it’s only a ‘comeback’ in that I’m putting out something new,” says the awardwinning singer-songwriter. “As someone who has never stopped working, I don’t see me as having gone away, as I tour extensively, write and produce for television, films as well as other artists."

During his hiatus Black was courted by the majors (labels). All of them wanted him to sing other writers’ songs, but Black insisted on writing his own, as well as to being his own producer.

“I really don’t want to conform to what other people think I should be doing with my music,” he says, bearing no ill will to major music corporations. “Instead, I’ll take my chances just being me. So I ended up just walking away from those opportunities. Our journey took us to Thirty Tigers Records, where I really feel I can be myself.”

Black’s On Purpose compiles a strikingly diverse group of his self-produced songs.

His ballads “Only One Way to Live,” “Stay Gone,” “Breathing Air” and “The Last Day” have never cut deeper, while his spirited 30 FALL 2016 PROGRAM GUIDE www.harriscenter.net

These new songs continue a stellar career.

To date, Clint Black has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and racked up 57 charted singles, 31 top-ten hits and 22 number-one smashes. Recordings such as “A Better Man,” “Killin’ Time,” “Like the Rain”, “When I Said I Do" and “Nothin’ But the Taillights” have led to honors from from the Country Music Association, The Academy of Country Music, The Grammys, and the American Music Awards, as well as membership in the cast of the Grand Ole Opry.

Raised in the suburbs of Houston, Texas, Clint Black is the youngest of four brothers.

He began performing with brother, Kevin at the family’s backyard barbecues. After high school, he worked construction for a year and spent 10 years on the local nightclub circuit. He auditioned for a Nashville recording contract in 1988. The following year, he led a movement of young talent that transformed country music into a multimillion dollar industry in the 1990s.

I don’t really feel like I was leading a change in country music,” he remarks. “It just felt like big success to me. I would hear things like, ‘So-and-so is going to record, and they’re using their own band because you did.’ Or, ‘So-and-so wants to write more of their own songs, because you did.’ But I don’t feel like I changed anything, other than contributing my work to the big picture. That’s my humble assessment of it. It’s hard to look at myself and see the impact I’ve had. I do know that my songs have touched a lot of people.”

“He married fellow Houstonian, and actress Lisa Hartman in 1991, their daughter Lily Pearl was born in 2001, and the family subsequently relocated from Los Angeles to Nashville.

Black took on new challenges in addition to producing records, touring and writing songs by becoming an actor and a video

director. He has founded several song publishing companies. He has been a musician recording and playing live with Kenny Loggins, Toto, Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett and others. His vocal collaborators have included Martina McBride, Wynonna, Roy Rogers, The Pointer Sisters, Waylon Jennings, Bruce Hornsby, Eric Idle and Steve Wariner.. Among his songwriting partners have been Wariner, Merle Haggard, Michael McDonald, Marty Stuart, Bill Anderson and Jimmy Buffett.

In the past, Black has produced records for artists such as Buddy Jewell and Carolina Rain. Clint’s love of finding and recording new talent led to his latest venture, Chideo’s online “Clint Black Dream Recording Session Contest,” the winner of which will be produced by the star. The aim of this endeavor is to bring attention to Chideo.com and to raise funds to find a cure for Rett Syndrome, a neuro-disorder afflicting up to ten thousand children each year. He is the honorary chair for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation’s “Research to Reality: Funding Process,” and his 2015 contest has led to his own primetime TV special, highlighting the charity and the finalists.

In the midst of this, Clint Black has been crafting On Purpose. During his years away from releasing records, he says he has accumulated a large backlog of songs. “For almost every album I have made, I had two or three albums worth of material written,” he comments. “I’ve always had an abundance of songs, probably 30 to choose from for the 10 that I would need to make the best album.

For this one, I probably had more like 40 songs to narrow down.”

The new album is dedicated to his father, who died in late 2012.

“My dad was a huge country fan and is the first reason I listen to country music. He is probably the reason I’m a songwriter today. He was my introduction to "who’s behind the music".I grew up wanting to be the writer behind the song.

That really all started with him.

“To him, country music was a sacred thing.

From time to time, I imagine him out there just beyond the spotlight, listening. So I dedicate this album to him, wishing we could share one more release together but alas, the clock ran out. I’ll just live with the faith that somehow, he’s able to hear it.”

In 1992, Ms. Tharp published her autobiography Push Comes To Shove. She went on to write THE CREATIVE HABIT: Learn it and Use it for Life, followed by THE COLLABORATIVE HABIT: Life Lessons for Working Together. She is currently working on a fourth book.

Today, Ms. Tharp continues to create.

THE COMPANY MATTHEW DIBBLE was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, and began his training at the Royal Ballet School.

After five years with the Royal Ballet, having worked with Twyla Tharp in 1996, Dibble became a founding member of K Ballet in Japan, and in 2001 he joined Twyla Tharp Dance. He later danced a Principal role (James) on the Movin’ Out tour and created the role of Chanos in Come Fly Away on Broadway, both choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp. Dibble has also danced for Scottish Ballet, Matthew Bourne, Roland Petit, Christopher Wheeldon, Francis Patrelle and Benjamin Millepied. Today he dances and sets works for Twyla Tharp all around the world.

DANIEL BAKER was born in Newcastle, Australia. He studied at the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet. Baker first worked with Tharp in 2008 in Miami City Ballet where he held the rank of soloist. He went on to join San Francisco Ballet and has performed works by Tharp,

Balanchine, Cranko, Forsythe, Morris, Neumeier, Ratmansky, Robbins, Taylor, Tudor and Wheeldon. Baker was a finalist on the hit show So You Think Can Dance and has danced alongside the Rockettes at the Radio City Music Hall. Baker has appeared in two PBS Great Performance Specials and performed Tharp's Movin’ Out at the 2014 Gershwin Awards honoring Billy Joel. He received the New York Choreographic Fellowship Award and has choreographed for the New York Choreographic Institute in Lincoln Center.

RON TODOROWSKI is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and has had a diverse career in concert, musical theater and commercial dance. He has been a member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, The Parsons Dance Company, Mia Michaels "RAW" and has guested for many others. He was most recently part of the original cast of Finding Neverland on Broadway. Other Broadway credits include Twyla Tharp's Come Fly Away, The Times They Are A Changin’ and Movin' Out along with Wicked, Guys and Dolls and Footloose. He starred in London's West End production and first National tour of Movin' Out where he received a Helen Hayes Award for Best Actor in a musical. Off Broadway and other theater credits include Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party, Chess for the Actor's Fund with Josh Groban, Barry Manilow’s Copacabana, Spirit and Cinderella. Some television and film credits include SNL, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The View, the Tony Awards, the VMA's and the feature film Winter’s Tale. He has choreographed original work for Wayne State University, BC Beat in NYC and worked as Assistant Choreographer for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers at the Lyric Theater in Oklahoma City as well as Celine Dion’s A New Day in Las Vegas. He recently shot a music video for Nate Ruess's new single, "A-Ha."

KAITLYN GILLILAND began her dance training at the Minnesota Dance Theatre and continued her studies at the School of American Ballet. From 2006-2011, Kaitlyn danced with the New York City Ballet, receiving the company’s 20092010 Janice Levin Dancer Award. She has since appeared with BalletNext, Ballet Collective, Ballet Tech, Emery LeCrone Dance, Intermezzo Dance Company, JV Squad – Designated Movement, New Chamber Ballet, Pontus Lidberg Dance, and Trainor Dance. She joined Twyla Tharp in 2014 for her 50th Anniversary Tour.

REED TANKERSLEY is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area where he began his dance training at the age of five. After graduating from The Juilliard School (2014) in New York, he began working with Twyla Tharp on her 50th Anniversary Tour.

RAMONA KELLEY is originally from California, where she began her training at Berkeley Ballet Theater under the direction of Sally Streets. She is a National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts (NFAA) scholarship award-winner and she holds a BFA in Dance from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Kelley first worked with Twyla Tharp when she danced the principal role ‘Betsy’ in the North American/ Japanese tour of Tharp’s Come Fly Away. Her most recent work with Tharp includes the 50th Anniversary Tour of 2015. She has also worked with Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance, Oakland Ballet Company and The Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary Tour, among others.

AMY RUGGIERO, a New York native, who trained at the Seiskaya Ballet Academy and received a B.A. in Dance with Biological Sciences from Goucher College. Ms. Ruggiero danced as an apprentice with Ballet Austin and later with American Repertory Ballet before moving to NYC to perform as an Ensemble Dancer with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

Loquasto has collaborated with Twyla Tharp since 1974 on numerous occasions including iconic works such as Push Comes to Shove and Movin’ Out. He has collaborated with Woody Allen on 28 films including costume design for Zelig and production design for Radio Days and Bullets Over Broadway for which he received Academy Award nominations. Concerto for Violin, Violoncello and Fortepiano in C major, Op. 56, Triple

that even then, long before Chopin, was popular all over Europe for festive music of a particularly ceremonial type.

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, probably on December 16, 1770 (he was baptized the following day), and died in Vienna on March 16, 1827. He composed his so-called “Triple” in the winter of 1803-04. The first performance, a private one, took place at an unknown date. It was first performed in May 1808. The concerto is scored for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, and trumpets, plus timpani and strings.

The Triple Concerto has long been the stepchild of Beethoven’s concerto compositions, the work least often played and most severely criticized. To be sure, the demands of three soloists sometimes lead to more repetition than we expect from Beethoven, but, at the same time, it is a fascinating step in the composer’s progression. Without this preliminary, he may never have written the Violin Concerto and the Fourth Piano Concerto.

Ludwig van Beethoven began composing his Triple Concerto early in 1803, about the same time he was composing the Eroica Symphony, and he continued working on it the following year, while also planning and writing the first of the Razumovsky quartets and two of his most famous piano sonatas, the Waldstein and the Appassionata. Thus, the Triple Concerto falls squarely into the period of Beethoven’s most prolific and popular work.

Symphony No. 6 in F major, Opus 68, Pastoral

The choice of three soloists for his C major concerto was unusual.

Not that there were not concertos with more than one soloist before – the Baroque era is full of them and even the symphonie concertante of the Classical era has many examples. However, this particular combination of piano, violin, and cello seems never to have been tried before. The choice of solo instruments may have been dictated by his dedicatee, the young Archduke Rudolph, who wanted it for performance by his private orchestra.

He was one of the Emperor’s sons, a pupil of Beethoven’s and was for years one of the composer’s most steadfast supporters. The Archduke himself was to play the piano in the performance, and the violin and cello parts were written for the principal players in the orchestra: a violinist named Seidler and the cellist Anton Kraft, who was one of the leading virtuosos of the day. Beethoven apparently admired Kraft, because the cello part is notably more difficult than either of the other two solo parts and remains, indeed, one of the most challenging in the cello repertoire.

It is not entirely clear when Beethoven finished the concerto. The Archduke presumably kept the manuscript of the finished work (it is now lost) and took part in private performances. The parts were published in 1807 (oddly enough with a dedication to Prince Lobkowitz rather than the Archduke), and the work was publicly performed in Vienna’s Augarten in May 1808.

Like many post-Eroica works, the Triple Concerto makes a virtue out of expansive breadth. In this particular case, the length is generated in part by the presence of three soloists, each of whom requires a separate statement of the material in the exposition.

This format, in turn, means that the concerto as a whole tends more toward lyric elaboration than to dramatic transformation of the material. The first movement is far more leisurely and less heaven-storming than Beethoven’s other compositions of the same time, reveling instead in the genial interplay of sonorities.

It grows out of the very hushed opening gesture of the orchestral cellos. It is interesting to note that Beethoven liked to start his symphonies with a loud chord, but tended in most cases to begin concertos softly, even mysteriously.

To follow this unusually long first movement, Beethoven employed the same procedure that he had already tried in the Waldstein sonata, having a short set of variations that link directly to the final Rondo alla Polacca, which uses the polonaise rhythm

Beethoven did most of his work on Sixth Symphony during the fall of 1807 and the early part of 1808 (a few sketches go back as far as 1803); he had sold the work to the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel by September 1808. The Sixth Symphony was first performed—along with the Fifth Symphony, the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Choral Fantasy, and several movements of the Mass in C, Opus 86, all in their premiere performances as well—on December 22, 1808, at the Theater-an-der-Wien in Vienna. The symphony is scored for two flutes and piccolo, pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, and trombones, plus timpani and strings.

The delight that Beethoven took in the world of nature is attested by countless stories from many periods of his life. When in Vienna he never failed to take his daily walk around the ramparts, and during his summers spent outside of town he would be outdoors most of the day. The notion of treating the natural world in music occurred to him as early as 1803, when he wrote down in one of his sketchbooks a musical fragment in 12/8 time (the same meter used for the “Scene at the brook”) with a note: “Murmur of the brook.” Other musical ideas later to end up in the Sixth Symphony appear in his sketchbooks sporadically in 1804 and during the winter of 1806-07, when he worked out much of the thematic material for all of the movements but the second. He apparently completed the piece in the summer of 1808.

One thing that aroused discussion of the new symphony—a debate lasting for decades—was the fact that Beethoven provided each movement of the work with a program, or literary guide to its meaning. His titles are really only brief images, just enough to suggest a setting: I. Awakening of happy feelings upon reaching the countryside.

II. Scene at the brook.

III. Cheerful gathering of the country folk.

IV. Thunderstorm.

V. Shepherd’s song. Happy, grateful feelings after the storm.

Many romantic composers and critics saw in this program a justification for the most abstruse kinds of storytelling in symphonic writing, but the program is certainly not necessary for understanding the music as Beethoven finally left it; there is nothing here that departs from expectation simply for narrative reasons. Still, there have been some unlikely, even bizarre attempts to illustrate the symphony, which go from an 1829 production in London with six actors and a ballet company up to the detailed Disney scenario in Fantasia, replete with amorous centaurs, cupids, and a mighty Zeus throwing thunderbolts until he is tired and then curling up for a nap under a convenient cloud—a far cry from the composer’s intentions. www.harriscenter.net FALL 2016 PROGRAM GUIDE 37

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Much more important for an understanding of Beethoven’s view than the headings of the movements is the note that Beethoven had printed in the program of the first performance: “Pastoral Symphony, more an expression of feeling than painting.”

Clearly this symphony provided yet again what all of his symphonies had offered: subjective moods and impressions captured in harmony, melody, color, and the structured passage of time.

Beethoven’s sketchbooks reveal that he was working on his Fifth and Sixth symphonies at the same time; they were finished virtually together, given consecutive opus numbers (67 and 68), and premiered on the same concert. Yet no two symphonies are less likely to be confused, even by the most casual listener—the Fifth, with its demonic energy, tense harmonies, and powerful dramatic climaxes on the one hand, and the Sixth, with its smiling and sunny air of relaxation and joy on the other. Clearly Beethoven planned for them to represent opposing poles of musical expression, even in those respects in which they are most alike.

The Fifth deals in harmonic tensions—dissonant diminishedseventh and augmented-sixth chords that color the mood almost throughout. The harmonic character of the Sixth Symphony is altogether more relaxed. Beethoven builds his extensive musical plan on the very simplest harmonies, on the chords that harmony students learn in the first few days of study—tonic, dominant, and subdominant. The symphony revels in major triads from the very beginning, and the diminishedseventh chord is withheld until the thunderstorm of the fourth movement. As in the Fifth Symphony, the melodic material of the first movement is derived from the very beginning of the work, but in the Sixth, the thematic motives that arise from the opening measures of the Pastoral Symphony—there are at least four of them—are relaxed, genial, apparently in no hurry to get anywhere. Our course through the first movement is perfectly balanced with slow swings from tonic to dominant and back or lengthy phrases reiterating a single chord, then jumping to another chord for more repetition. The fact that all this sheer repetition does not lead to fatigue or exasperation on the listener’s part is tribute to Beethoven’s varied orchestral colors and textures.

One idea that does not appear at the very beginning but grows in importance throughout is a little figure of repeated notes in triplets first heard as a punctuation in clarinets and bassoons. As the movement progresses, that triplet rhythm insinuates itself more and more into the musical fabric until, by the beginning of the recapitulation, it is running along in counterpoint to the themes heard at the outset, and just before the close of the movement, the solo clarinet takes off on triplet arpeggios in what is virtually a cadenza.

The richly scored second movement opens with two muted solo cellos providing a background murmur along with second violins and violas, while the first violins and woodwinds embellish the melodic flow with a rich array of turns and trills.

Even if Beethoven had never provided a title for the movement, no listener familiar with the traditions of western music would fail to recognize its bucolic leisure, in which the gentle running of water, bird song, soft breezes, and rustling leaves are all implicit. engaged. Even the one explicitly “programmatic” passage—the song of nightingale, quail, and cuckoo labeled as such in the flute, oboe, and clarinet just before the end of the movement— fits perfectly well as a purely musical passage (how many real birds sing in classical four-measure phrases?).

Only twice in Beethoven’s symphonic output did he link the movements of a symphony so that they would be performed without a break. Significantly, this happened in the two sibling symphonies, the Fifth and the Sixth. And, as in so many other respects, the two symphonies are a negative mirror of one another. In the Fifth, the scherzo joins the finale by a long tense passage getting louder and louder and demanding resolution in the bright C major of the closing movement. In the Pastoral Symphony the level of tension is not nearly so high, and the linking passage has grown to a full movement itself. The scherzo, a real dance movement in F major, is interrupted just at its last chord by a dramatic Allegro in F minor. The violence of that extended passage gradually dies down and returns to the major mode for the final passage of rustic simplicity, a release from the tension of the Allegro whether or not one thinks of it as “grateful feelings after the storm.” In both symphonies, then, the transition moves from darkness and tension to the light of a major key finale. Characteristically, Beethoven demonstrated that he could achieve this effect in opposing ways: in the Fifth, with a massive crescendo to a powerful fortissimo point of arrival; in the Sixth, by a steady decrescendo from the height of the “storm” to the tranquility of the clear weather that follows.

The storm is picturesquely scored, providing a veritable quarry of techniques that were mined by composers for decades.

Berlioz spoke of Beethoven’s orchestration here with the greatest admiration, and he helped himself to such devices as the thick, “stormy” sound of the opening. As the storm ends, a ranz des vaches or Swiss herdsman’s song introduces the final major key movement and the “hymn of thanksgiving.” The tune that Beethoven borrowed for this spot unmistakably identifies the setting in a world of pastoral simplicity. © Steven Ledbetter (www.stevenledbetter.com)

Among the most recorded orchestras in the world, PBO boasts a discography of more than 40 recordings and launched its own label in 2011, on which it has released nine recordings, including a coveted archival performance of mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson singing Berlioz’s Les Nuits D’ete, and received a GRAMMY nomination for its recording of Haydn symphonies.

The Orchestra just released its modern North American premiere of Alessandro Scarlatti’s La gloria di primavera that coincided with its May 2016 tour. PBO comissioned its first work, a one-act opera, To Hell and Back, by acclaimed composer Jake Heggie, in 2002. Audiences heard the world premiere of Red, Red Rose by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw at Walt Disney Concert Hall in May 2016. The piece was written for and was performed by mezzo-soprano Anne-Sofie von Otter. This unique tour also included works by Handel, Purcell and Arvo Pärt. The Orchestra’s newly-launched alternative concert series for younger and new audiences – SESSIONS – has regularly sold-out since its inception in 2014.

As he embarks on his fourth decade on the podium, Nicholas McGegan — hailed as “one of the finest Baroque conductors of his generation” (The Independent) and “an expert in 18th-century style” (The New Yorker) — is recognized for his probing and revelatory explorations of music of all periods. In 2015, he begins his 30th year as music director of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale, and was Artistic Director of the International Handel Festival Göttingen for 20 years (1991– 2011). Beginning in the 2013-14 season he became Principal Guest Conductor of the Pasadena Symphony.

His 15/16 season featured guest appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (with which he has appeared at annually for nearly 20 years), St. Louis Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Carnegie Hall, among others.

Under McGegan, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale performed Scarlatti’s La gloria di primavera at Carnegie Hall and throughout California’s Orange County. In May 2016, McGegan and the orchestra made their Canadian debut with standing ovations at Bourgie Hall in Montreal and Palais Montcalm in Québec City in a program featuring Anne Sofie von Otter and Andreas Scholl. The program also featured the world premiere of a commissioned work by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw.

McGegan was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) “for services to music overseas.”

CYNTHIA FREIVOGEL (Violin) In addition to being the leader and concertmaster of the Baroque most recently with Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra with Ton Koopman, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (San Francisco), American Bach Soloists, and the Handel & Haydn Society (Boston). She has been a member of chamber ensembles including the recently formed Hopkinson trio, Brandywine Baroque in Wilmington, Delaware, Magnificat Ensemble, and Voices of Music, which has made numerous videos you can find on Youtube. Ms. Freivogel has long been dedicated to the performance of the string quartets of Haydn and his contemporaries on period instruments. She was a founding member and second violinist of the Novello Quartet, and a founding member of the Coriolan Quartet (Boston).

TANYA TOMKINS (Violoncello) Tanya Tomkins is a chamber musician and soloist who is also co-Principal cellist in both the Portland and Philharmonia Baroque orchestras.

She has recorded all six Bach Suites on Baroque cello for Avie and also performed all six in one day at the Library of Congress, the Da Camara Society in LA, and for Vancouver Early Music Society, as well as giving recitals of the Suites at Le Poisson Rouge and at Caramoor. Other venues where she has performed chamber music on modern cello include the Concertgebouw’s Kleine Zaal, Lincoln Center, the 92nd St Y, San Francisco Performances, Music in the Vineyards Festival, the Moab Music Festival and Houston’s Da Camara Society. In the San Francisco Bay Area, she is a member of the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble which performs both standard and modern repertoire.

Together with pianist, Eric Zivian, Tanya is co-Founder and Artistic Director of the new Valley of the Moon Music Festival in Sonoma, and has also founded and runs a series of house concerts called Benvenue House Music. Both of these organizations have Apprentice Programs that help to further the careers of emerging musicians. She is part-time faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

continued ERIC ZIVIAN (Fortepiano)

Eric Zivian was born in Michigan and grew up in Toronto, Canada, where he attended the Royal Conservatory of Music. After receiving a diploma there, he left home at age fifteen to attend the Curtis Institute of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree.

He went on to receive graduate degrees from the Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music. He studied piano with Gary Graffman and Peter Serkin and composition with Ned Rorem, Jacob Druckman, and Martin Bresnick. He attended the Tanglewood Music Center both as a performer and as a composer.

Mr. Zivian has given solo recitals in Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, and the San Francisco Bay Area. He has played concertos with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the Portland Baroque orchestra. Since 2000, Mr. Zivian has performed extensively on original instruments. He is a member of the Zivian-Tomkins Duo, a fortepiano-cello duo that has performed throughout the United States. He is also a member of the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble and has performed with the Empyrean Ensemble and Earplay. He is a frequent guest artist on the San Francisco Conservatory's faculty chamber music series. Mr. Zivian's compositions have been performed widely in the United States and in Tokyo, Japan. He was awarded an ASCAP Jacob Druckman Memorial Commission to compose an orchestral work, Three Character Pieces, which was premiered by the Seattle Symphony in March 1998.

Ian Anderson celebrates the life and times of English agriculturalist Jethro Tull in this new concert tour. Anderson is known as the legendary frontman for the classic rock band Jethro Tull and re-imagines his namesake with a narrative set in the near future. The show presents some of the best known songs from the repertoire of the band Jethro Tull.

In JETHRO TULL, Anderson touches on topical issues including climate change, intensive food production and population growth. New material specially written for this show includes “Prosperous Pasture,” “Fruits Of Frankenfield,” “And The World Feeds Me,” “Stick, Twist, Bust,” and “The Turnstile Gate.” JETHRO TULL features amongst many Tull favorites “Heavy Horses,” “Farm On The Freeway,” “Songs From The Wood,” “Aqualung,” “Living In The Past,” “Wind-Up,” “A New Day Yesterday,” “The Witch's Promise” and “Locomotive Breath,” sometimes with slightly re-written lyrics to better tell the tale. Look out for tour dates and much more information at www.jethrotull.com IAN ANDERSON BIOGRAPHY Ian Anderson, known throughout the world of rock music as the flute and voice behind the legendary Jethro Tull, celebrates his 48th year as an international recording and performing musician in 2016.

Ian was born in 1947 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. After attending primary school in Edinburgh, his family relocated to Blackpool in the north of England in 1959. Following a traditional grammar school education, he moved on to art college to study fine art before deciding on an attempt at a musical career. Tull formed in 1968 out of the amalgamation of the John Evan Band and McGregor’s Engine, two blues-based local UK groups.

After a lengthy career, Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull have released 30 studio and live albums, selling more than 60 million copies since the band first performed at London’s famous Marquee Club in February 1968.

After undertaking more than 3000 concerts in 40 countries throughout four decades, he has typically played 100-plus concerts each year to longstanding, as well as new fans worldwide. Widely recognized as the man who introduced

the flute to rock music, Ian Anderson remains the crowned exponent of the popular and rock genres of flute playing. So far, no real pretender to the throne has stepped forward. Ian also plays ethnic flutes and whistles together with acoustic guitar and the mandolin family of instruments, providing the acoustic textures which has been an integral part of most of the Tull repertoire.

His hobbies include the growing of many varieties of hot chile peppers, the study and conservation of the 26 species of small wildcats of the world and the appreciation of mechanical watches, fountain pens, and vintage cameras. He reluctantly admits to owning digital cameras and scanners for his work on the photographic promotional images related to Tull as well as his solo career.

Anderson has so far recorded six diverse albums under his own name during a long career: 1983's Walk Into Light, the flute instrumental Divinities album for EMI’s Classical Music Division in 1995 which reached number one in the relevant Billboard chart, and the more acoustic collections of songs, “The Secret Language of Birds,” “Rupi’s Dance,” plus rock albums Thick As A Brick 2 and most recently, 2014’s Homo Erraticus.

In 2006, he was awarded a Doctorate in Literature from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, the Ivor Award for International Achievement in Music and, in the New Years Honours List 2008, an MBE for services to music. In 2011, he received another Doctorate in Literature from Dundee University.

In recent years, he has toured more and more as simply Ian Anderson, often with orchestras, string quartets, featured soloists.

Anderson lives on a farm in the southwest of England where he has a recording and rehearsal studio and offices. He has been married for 38 years to Shona who is also an active director of their music and other companies. They have two children – James and Gael – and two grandchildren. Gael is married to actor Andrew Lincoln, currently shooting more episodes of the hugely-acclaimed zombie thriller, The Walking Dead, for TV broadcast in 2012 through 2016.

Ian owns no fast car, never having taken a driving test, and has a wardrobe of singularly uninspiring and drab leisurewear.

He still keeps a couple of off-road competition motorcycles, a few sporting guns and a saxophone which he promises never to play again.

He declares a lifelong commitment to music as a profession, being far too young to hang up his hat or his flute, although the tights and codpiece have long since been consigned to some forgotten bottom drawer.

Margaret O' Carroll The Kerry Dance Troupe The Kerry Dance Troupe was established by Kerry Irish Productions Inc. with the intention of promoting and celebrating Irish culture and its rich traditions through the medium of dance and introducing these often forgotten Irish traditions to new audiences. These ‘ambassadors’ of Irish dance work with KIPI on various aspects of Irish folk-dance, incorporating old Irish dance styles into modern Irish dance styles and thus forging the path between the old and the new. Through this process the best of ethnic and modern Ireland is represented, exposing audiences to the beauty, value, passion and uniqueness of our traditional ways that play such an important part in the life of the community.

The Dance Master’s Shoes A pair of dance shoes become the embodiment of not only all that was lost in Ireland's long and troubled history, but everything that was saved - everything that is still cherished in the Irish folk traditions. The dance master's shoes, in a sense, symbolize the wealth of Irish culture. These are magical shoes, they have a life of their own and they take us on our journey.

During the churning, everybody, young and old who entered the farmhouse, had to take a turn at the churn which lightened the labor of churning. There were many customs associated with the production of the butter: salt or a drop of holy water was added to ensure that the butter was protected from those that would like to ‘steal the butter’ for their own use, work songs were an essential part of the magic of the ritual performed to ensure the success of the butter making (to get more butter, of course), and dances were danced around the churn in a joyful expression of that success! Of note: Ireland was the leading exporter of butter to the known world in the 18th century.

Straw Boys: This ancient tradition of acting out old stories and songs had the men dressing in disguise and using stylized straw hats to hide their faces. They would randomly appear at celebrations to perform their songs and dances and they usually requested and received food, money or some token of gratitude in return. In former times when house weddings were the norm it was common for Straw Boys to appear. They were always welcomed and the captain of the Straw Boys might well "kidnap" the bride, demanding a ransom of porter!

Bodhrán/Dance: This dance is a two-way display of rhythm. The intense bodhrán rhythms challenge the intricate rhythms of the dancer’s feet. Both bodhrán player and dancer enter a joyful competition where ‘fun’ is central to this friendly but intense competition. Again, in the great Irish tradition more dancers enter the moment and it now becomes a ‘dance-off’ between male and female…! In the final analysis – all are deemed to be equal and a common dance brings peace! Equality reigns supreme!

Sean Nós Dance: The term sean nós means "old style": It is impromptu, rhythmic and low key with arms loose, feet low to the ground and a focus on percussive beats battered out by the feet.

EXPLANATIONS Fireworks Dance: The great Irish tradition of the dance-off is expressed in this dance. The male and female dancers display their ‘wares’ and brilliance in the dance and finish with a common step reminding us all that both are equally skilled!

Shoemaking: Every village and town in Ireland had a shoemaker (An Gréasaí Bróg). The shoemaker worked from morning ‘till night protecting the feet of all! He lengthened the life of shoes and boots, made new shoes and boots to order and prided himself on his fine workmanship as would any craftsman.

Traditionally in Ireland, leather was the principle material used.

We honor this rhythmic craft tonight and in so doing remind you too that the airy dancer who wears these shoes is indeed a great dancer!

Butter making: In times gone by, butter making was a cottage industry in Ireland and an important task for many farming

continued The North Kerry Blackbird: The wren begins this dance and is joined by the Kerry Dance Troupe. 'The Blackbird' is the oldest known solo set dance. The dance steps you will see in the 'Blackbird' dance are the original Jerry Molineaux steps. From North Kerry, he was a well-known dance master in the seannos tradition. These steps were gathered from Fr. Pat Ahern, founder of The Irish National Folk Theatre, who learned the steps directly from Jerry Molineaux. These steps are close to one hundred years old!

Bodhrán: The bodhrán takes its name from the Irish word bodhar which means deafening. It is a frame drum which stretches back to the 14th century. The bodhran was used as a work implement for many years and it was used particularly in the mumming traditions of Kerry and Cork, to chase out the wren on the 26th of December (lá an dreoilín). The bodhrán has changed in the last century from a primitive frame drum played with the hand, to a very complicated tonal and rhythmic percussive instrument.

It was first popularized by the group Ceoltóirí Chualann, under the leadership of Seán Ó Riada.

Dancing on the Half Door

Dancing on the Half Door: The ‘half door’ was an important part of Irish social life. Placed in front of the front door it possessed no latch. It would swing back and forth in free movement! It admitted light and kept animals out. It was a wonderful center of ‘gossip’ and was no doubt, the bearer of many secrets. It became the ‘stage’ when an evening of fun or competition was called in the community. The half door would be removed from its position and dropped to the floor whereupon the dance challenge was delivered! Sometimes the half door was soaped to make the competition more challenging! It is said - ‘a good dancer could dance on a tray, and an excellent dancer could dance on a half-penny’. The best dancers danced as it were, underneath themselves, trapping each note of music on the floor, and as each dancer attempted to outdo the other with more intricate steps the fun knew no end. The dancers always gathered at the end of the dance in one friendly step, much to the joy of the observer!

Uilleann Pipes: The uilleann pipes are a cousin of the more common Scottish great highland bagpipes. They took on their current form during the second half of the 18th century and sparked a golden age of pipe making and playing which lasted in Ireland until the Great Famine. After nearly being completely forgotten, the uilleann pipes are now enjoying a revival which has been sparked by the great efforts of hundreds of folk musicians since the early 1960s. Uilleann pipes differ from most other forms of bagpipes in that they have a range of two fully chromatic octaves, are able to achieve both staccato and legato phrasing, as well as providing chordal and rhythmic accompaniment to itself via the regulators.

Lá an Dreoilín: “The Day of the Wren,” celebrates the old custom of ‘The Wrenboys’ — groups of boys, girls and adults who, on the feast of St. Stephen (26th December) went about from house to house dressed in various disguises, playing music and performing dances. They carried with them a wren tied to a holly bush. The hunt for the wren sparked much fun and excitement leading up to “The Day of the Wren” when the celebrations began before dawn and continued until late into the night. All houses in the district were visited and all welcomed the Wrenboys who would dance, sing and make merry in exchange for a “penny to bury the wren.”

ARTIST BIOS ISAAC ALDERSON (Uilleann pipes, flute and whistles). Isaac Alderson grew up in Chicago. At the age of 12, he discovered Irish traditional music and began obsessively practicing the uilleann pipes, learning from such players as Al Purcell, Patrick Cannady, Kieran O'Hare, and many others. At 14, he began to study the flute and whistle with Laurence Nugent from Co. Fermanagh. He traveled to Ireland over subsequent years which gave him the opportunity to study and play with many outstanding musicians. In 2002, Isaac won the All-Ireland Senior Championships on all three of his main instruments. After finishing college, Isaac toured for two years with Eileen Ivers as part of her band, Immigrant Soul, and afterwards with such diverse groups as Jameson's Revenge and Runa, Millish. He currently performs with his band The Yanks, and the international quartet Comas, the show Celtic Crossroads, Irish bar band The Bronx Boys and the chamber folk group Ensemble Galilei. He has toured in the US, Canada, Ireland, Colombia, much of Western Europe, and recently did a three-month tour of China as the piper in the famed show, Riverdance. He also performed in the pit orchestra for Sting's Broadway musical, The Last Ship, during its Chicago run, and has toured with Celtic Woman. As a teacher, Isaac has led workshops in flute, whistle, and uilleann pipes at the Great Northern Irish Pipers' Club Tionól, the St. Louis Tionól, the Re-Jigged Festival in Nova Scotia, the O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat in Texas, MAD Week in the D.C. area, the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival in Canada, Common Ground in Maryland, the Corofin Trad Fest in Co. Clare, Catskills Irish Arts Week in upstate New York, and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Alaska.

He has also led small workshops for students in Rio Negro and Villa de Leyva, Colombia. Isaac teaches private lessons online and in person, mainly to advanced students. He is known for his patience and compassion in teaching students of all levels.

KORAL AAKRE (Female Vocalist).

Soprano Koral Aakre, from Coos Bay located on the beautiful southern Oregon coast, comes from a family of singers and began voice lessons with her father at the age of seven. Koral is well known in Oregon’s Bay area. She was a dancer and singer in Oregon’s Little Opry on the Bay. Upon graduation from high school she toured the East Coast for one year with Lutheran Youth Encounter’s Christian Rock Band, Captive Free.This was her opportunity to enter the world of performance and touring to see if this was really where her heart was. She studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and returned to Oregon to earn a degree in vocal performance from Southern Oregon University where she studied opera.

She performed with the Rogue Opera, Opera in the Streets, Brava Opera Workshop, SOU Chamber and Concert Choir and the Southern Oregon Reparatory Singers. Prior to moving to Los Angeles she worked as a campaign manager and legislative assistant for Senator Arnie Roblan. She was honored to sing multiple times for the Oregon State legislative assemblies. When Koral moved to Los Angeles she auditioned for her first season with An Irish Christmas. She loves performing with the Kerry Irish Productions Inc. cast members and is excited to perform in 46 FALL 2016 PROGRAM GUIDE www.harriscenter.net

upcoming shows with the company. Koral is the great greatgranddaughter of Bridgette Conlon who emigrated from Ireland as a mail order bride. Koral has become more rooted in her Irish heritage since joining the company four years ago. Her grandmother, Bernyce, would burst with pride to hear her sing today.

PAT BROADERS (Bouzouki and vocals). Pat grew up in Dublin, the son of parents from Wexford. He began his journey in traditional music at the age of eight, and attended the School of Music in Chatham Street in Dublin.

He started out on the whistle, and later moved on to the uilleann pipes under the tutelage of Leon Rowsome. He took up the bouzouki in 1988, inspired by the sounds he grew up hearing from bands like Planxty. Pat has performed and recorded with Dennis Cahill, Liz Carroll, and Martin Hayes, John Doyle, Paddy O’Brien, Mick O’Brien, Robbie O’Connell, Bohola and Danú. He toured Europe, Asia and South America with Celtic Legends in the incredibly demanding role of sole backer and singer in the show. When he is not performing, He has engineered albums for Liz Knowles, Larry Nugent, Celtic Legends and tracks for Bohola and Liz Carroll. For years, he worked with the Norwegian new age musical group Secret Garden and he has had a long-standing relationship with Kongshavan Studios and their many musical projects in Norway.

He has performed on numerous national commercials and jingles in the US and Ireland. Pat teaches the pipes and operates Pipedream Studio in Chicago.

EMILY DICKERSON (Kerry Dance Troupe).

Emily Dickerson, from Pomona, California, found her passion for Irish dancing at a very young age. She started Irish dancing when she was 11 at the Painter-Larson Academy of Irish Dance in Fullerton, CA. Her deep love for the dance and rich, intricate culture of Ireland has never since faltered. Emily became an Open Champion dancer in less than two years and has competed at the regional, national, and world levels. When she is not dancing, she works as an esthetician and makeup artist. This is her third year performing with Kerry Irish Productions, and she is thrilled and honored to be dancing in An Irish Christmas 2016!

SCOTT DOHERTY (Principal Dancer and Dance Captain). Scott Doherty is the 2009 men's world champion of Irish dance. Scott made his professional debut in 2005 with the North American tour of Riverdance.

Since then he has toured the world with both Riverdance and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance. Scott was invited to perform the lead role in Gaelforce Dance for their 2012/2013 tours of Europe and Asia. Since 2007 Scott has been performing in the Irish dance shows at Busch Gardens, serving as Celtic Fyre's dance captain and principal dancer since 2012. Scott has also been a guest performer with many acclaimed Irish acts, including the Irish Tenors, Cherish the Ladies, Michael Londra, and Andy Cooney. Recently, Scott co-created, choreographed, and starred in the production, Rockin' Road to Dublin. This is Scott's third season with An Irish Christmas.

B E L L A I S S A KO VA ( M u s i c i a n s ’ Coordinator, Fiddle). Bella began playing the violin at the age of 5 at the National Music School of Sofia, Bulgaria. Growing up in the rich Bulgarian musical culture, Ms. Issakova had the privilege of working and touring throughout Europe, the Middle East, and the U.S. with various orchestras and chamber orchestras.

After permanently relocating to Southern California in 1993, Ms. Issakova developed a well-established career in both performance and teaching. In 2000, she discovered and fell in love with Irish Traditional music. She became a Kerry Irish Productions artist in 2005 and has toured with the company since. She currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia where in addition to teaching and performing, she has become a member of the critically-acclaimed Irish Traditional group The Red Wellies.

EMILY MACCONNELL (Featured Dancer Kerry Dance Troupe).Emily MacConnell hails from Lancaster, California. She holds a B.A. theatre degree from the University of Southern California and has danced for 18 years, placing as high as 8th in the world, 3rd at the All-Scotland championships, 3rd in the nation, and 1st in her own (Western US) and Southern England regions (having competed there when she studied abroad in London, England) under the direction of the Butler-Fearon O’Conner School of Irish Dance. Since 2014, she has toured nationally with An Irish Christmas and Rockin’Road to Dublin, toured Germany with Magic of the Dance, and completed two residencies in Celtic Fyre at Busch Gardens, Virginia. Emily is welcomed back to An Irish Christmas for the 2016 season. “To dance is to be out of yourself; larger, more beautiful, more powerful! Born in Tipperary, ten-year-old Jackie and his family immigrated to Chicago where he quickly began drumming with the best players on the Irish music scene. The young boy became the man who is preeminent in Chicago Irish music today. He is a founding and driving force of such influential bands as The Drovers, Comas, and Bua. Jackie is a fixture in the studio and in concert settings, sympathetically accompanying such great artists as Alphonso Ponticelli, Kevin Burke, Dennis Cahill, Liz Carroll, John Doyle, Alain Genty, Martin Hayes, Paddy Keenan, Michael Londra, Philip Masure, David Munnelly, Aidan Burke, Howard Levy and Jimmy Keane. Jackie’s talents have also led him to appear on stage with Riverdance, and to help form and perform with the Trinity Irish Dance Company. When Hollywood needs a musician to play the part, and look it as well, you’ll see Jackie. Backdraft (1991), Blink (1993), Traveler (1997) and The Road to Perdition (2002) all saw fit to feature Jackie and his Bodhrán. Most recently, Jackie has been a member of the Kilgubbin Bros. and is teaching at the Irish Music School of Chicago. He also makes custom Bodhráns with Mike Quinlan.

KEARA OSBORNE (Kerry Dance Troupe).

Keara has been an Irish dancer for 26 years. She has competed numerous times at the local, regional, and national levels. Now retired from competitive dance she enjoys performing regularly with world touring bands such as The Young Dubliners and The Fenians. In 2012, she was delighted to be a part of the Irish dance ensemble in Battle of the Dance in Anaheim, California.

Keara has made several television appearances as an Irish dancer, including the Disney XD show Crash and Bernstein in 2013 and the DJ Tommy Trash "Lord of the Trance" music video in 2014. In May, 2013 Keara completed her Masters of Social Work at the University of Southern California. Kerry Irish Productions Inc. is thrilled to welcome Keara as a returning member of The Kerry Dance Troupe.

SIENA ROSE O'REGAN (Kerry Dance Troupe). Siena began Irish dance at the age of seven. Irish dancing has been her passion her whole life and she proudly follows in the footsteps of her grandmother, Sheila. Siena has qualified for the World Championships five times.

As an under-twelve dancer she was the only Open dancer in the Western Region with seven wins in one year, amassing sixteen Open wins thus far.

She is also a five-time North American Feis Commission Junior Belt qualifier. Siena dances competitively with Celtic Irish Dance Academy in Los Angeles. She has performed on stage with The Chieftains on their Southern California tour and was featured in the Disney Channel show Shake it Up. Siena is so excited to join the cast of An Irish Christmas 2016.

TESSA ANTONIA O'REGAN (Kerry Dance Troupe). Tessa began dancing at the age of five and has been dancing for six years.

She dances competitively with Celtic Irish Dance Academy in Los Angeles.

She reached Preliminary Championship status and the highest level of competitive Irish dance, Open Championship, in just two years. Tessa has consistently been in the top ten position regionally, is a two-time top fifteen Nationals dancer, a three-time NAFC Minor Belt qualifier and has been in a world-qualifying position for the past four years. She traveled to Glasgow, Scotland for the World Championships of Irish dance where she was one of thirteen American dancers to recall and was the only dancer from the Western Region, U.S. to recall and place.

Tessa loves being on stage! In 2015, she performed as a featured dancer with The Chieftains on their Southern California tour. Tessa is honored and excited to be a part of An Irish Christmas Tour 2016.

CONNOR T. REIDER (Featured Dancer Kerry Dance Troupe). For 14 years Connor danced under the direction of the late Ann Richens and John Timm, competing at local, regional, national and world levels.

In his final year of competition he placed in the top 5 in Mid-America, top 10 in North America and top 20 in the World Championships. Connor attended the

University of Notre Dame where he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Pre-Professional Studies. While at Notre Dame he was the coach of the 2012 and 2013 All-Ireland Club Ceili Champions as well as a choreographer and performer for the Notre Dame & Saint Mary’s Irish dance team. Connor has performed with the Chieftains and in 2015 with Celtic Fyre at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. He joined An Irish Christmas National Tour in 2015 and returns for An Irish Christmas 2016 Tour. “Performing brings me such joy because I get to share my passion with others both on stage and with those in the audience. I am very honored and excited to return to An Irish Christmas 2016.”

TYLER SCHWARTZ (Featured Dancer Kerry Dance Troupe).Tyler began competitive Irish step dancing in Chicago, when he was 8 years old.

Since then, he has gone on to win many illustrious titles, including the Midwest regional championship, the All-Ireland Championship, All-Scotland Championship, North American Championship, and Great-Britain Championship! A World Champion, he capped off his competitive career winning the Senior Men's World Championship in 2013. Tyler has also performed all over the world, most notably in Japan, Germany, Spain, and France. He has been principal lead dancer for the Magic of the Dance, Trinity Irish Dance Company, Gaelforce Dance, and most recently for Busch Gardens Celtic Fyre. Soprano Ashley is a Southern California native and graduate of the Bob Cole Conservatory at California State University, Long Beach, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. Ashley has performed with Long Beach Opera, the Pacific Lyric Association and the Los Cancioneros Master Chorale. She has performed as the featured soprano soloist in the Mozart Requiem, the Faure Requiem, John Rutter's The Mass of the Children and the Vivaldi Gloria. In 2005, Ashley was selected to represent Southern California at the Rose of Tralee International Festival in Ireland.

She was interviewed and performed live on RTÉ, as part of the festival featuring women of Irish descent from around the globe.

Ashley is thrilled to return to the cast of An Irish Christmas and to continue with the Kerry Irish Productions Inc. 2016-2017 season.

CARRIE SCOTT-STOTMEISTER (Kerry Dance Troupe). Carrie began Irish dancing at the age of 6 with the CashelDennehy School of Irish Dance in Milwaukee, WI. She quickly excelled in Irish music and dance and holds medals at the Regional, National, and World Championship levels. In her professional career she has toured the United States and internationally with the Trinity Irish Dance Company and was a member of Battle of the Dance. performed with major names in Irish music including Cherish the Ladies, Black 47, and the Chieftains. She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA where she works in Fashion and teaches Irish Dance classes. She is thrilled to be performing with Kerry Irish Productions Inc in An Irish Christmas 2016.

K AT H E R I N E T R I M B L E ( Fe m a l e Vocalist). Mezzo soprano Katherine Trimble is thrilled to be entering her fourth year working with Kerry Irish Productions Inc. Holding a Bachelor in Music from Chapman University and a Master of Arts in Vocal Performance from San Jose State University, Katherine finds her Irish Christmas home the perfect meeting place of her classical music education and love of her heritage's music and dance. Katherine is fresh from playing Lilas Pastia (Carmen) with Opera San Jose where she was noted by the San Jose Mercury News for her "agile" performance. Other operatic roles include Ormindo (L'Ormindo), Public Opinion (Orpheus in the Underworld), Olga (Eugene Onegin), Zita (Gianni Schicchi) and Petra (A Little Night Music). She has been the alto soloist in Mozart's and Durufle's Requiem as well as Saint-Saen's Christmas Oratorio. She has taken first place in competitions held by the SAI Music Fraternity, San Jose Woman's Club, and San Jose Study Club. Katherine was also honored to be the first recipient of the Irene Dalis Memorial Award from San Jose State University.

VICTORIAL SCHULL (Kerry Dance Troupe) Victoria Schull was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. She began her dancing career at the age of 4 with lessons in tap, jazz, contemporary, and hip hop. At the age of 9, she was introduced to Irish dancing by Darren Maguire (of the Maguire Academy of Irish Dance) and quickly rose through the ranks to become an open championship level dancer, achieving success on both a regional and international basis.

Her achievements include placing 5th at the North American Nationals, multiple world placements, and winning two Western Regional (13 states) Oireachtas champion titles. Victoria was an original cast member of the show Studio2stage, and has appeared numerous times with critically acclaimed groups such as The Chieftains, and Cherish the Ladies. She is delighted to be joining the cast of An Irish Christmas for the 2016 touring season.

JULIAN WACHNER A GRAMMY®-nominated conductor and acclaimed composer, Julian Wachner has transformed both the baroque and contemporary musical landscapes in New York City through his position as Director of Music and the Arts at Trinity Wall Street. At Trinity, he oversees an annual season of hundreds of events, with duties including conducting Trinity’s flagship weekly series, Bach at One, canvassing the entire sacred output of J. S. Bach. In addition, Wachner curates the long-standing and cherished series Concerts at One, presenting an eclectic program for Lower Manhattan and beyond through its HD live webcasting. Also at Trinity Wall Street, Wachner serves as the Principal Conductor of NOVUS NY (Trinity’s resident contemporary music orchestra), Trinity Baroque Orchestra, and the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, both of which were nominated for a 2012 GRAMMY® award for Handel’s complete Israel in Egypt on the Musica Omnia label.

In 2010, Wachner made New York City Opera history when he was selected as both conductor and composer at the company’s annual VOX festival of contemporary opera, leading to the invitation to be the sole conductor of this festival in 2012.

His extensive catalogue of compositions have been variously described as “jazzy, energetic, and ingenious” (Boston Globe), having “splendor, dignity, outstanding tone combinations, sophisticated chromatic exploration…a rich backdrop, wavering between a glimmer and a tingle...” (La Scena Musicale), being “a compendium of surprises” (The Washington Post), and as “bold and atmospheric,” having “an imaginative flair for allusive

Of his interpretation of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, according to the Boston Globe, “there was genius here and no mistaking it.”

Anne Midgette, of The Washington Post, declared recent Wagner and Verdi performances “exhilarating,” commenting: “Julian Wachner knows how to draw maximum drama from a score,” and noted that he was “emphatic and theatrical and so at home in opera that he could bring out the requisite sense of drama.”

An award-winning organist and improvisateur, Wachner’s solo recital at the Spoleto Festival USA featured an improvised finale that inspired one reviewer to conclude: “This stupefying wizardry was the hit of the recital, and it had to be heard to be believed” (Post and Courier, South Carolina). As a concert pianist, in his recent Kennedy Center Rachmaninoff performance, The Washington Post noted, “Wachner dazzled with some bravura keyboard work, both in the rhapsodic accompaniments to the songs and… in the highly virtuosic transcription of the Dances.”

Wachner has made memorable guest appearances with such major organizations as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Montreal, Pacific, Calgary, and Pittsburgh Symphonies, The New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall Presents, The National Arts Centre Orchestra, Juilliard Opera Theater, Lincoln Center Festival, Philharmonia Baroque, Berkeley Festival and Exhibition, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Spoleto Festival USA, the Handel and Haydn Society, Glimmerglass Opera, Hawaii Opera Theater, Bang on a Can All-Stars, New York City Opera, and the Boston Pops. THE CHOIR OF TRINITY WALL STREET As peerless interpreters of both early and new music, The GRAMMY®-nominated Choir of Trinity Wall Street has changed the realm of 21st-century vocal music, breaking new ground with its artistry described as “blazing with vigour…a choir from heaven” (The Times, London).

This premiere ensemble, under the direction of Julian Wachner, can be heard in New York City and around the world in performances alternately described as “thrilling” (The New Yorker), “musically top-notch” (The Wall Street Journal), and “simply superb” (The New York Times). The Choir leads the liturgical music on Sundays at Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel, while performing in Bach at One, Compline by Candlelight, and many other concerts and festivals throughout the year, often with the Trinity Baroque Orchestra and NOVUS NY. Doctors expecting calls during performances should leave their names and seat locations with the House Manager.

Photography and Recording The photographing and sound or video recording of any performance, without the explicit permission of management, is prohibited. Offenders may be ejected and liable for damages.

Ticket Office Open Monday-Saturday, noon to 6 pm and two hours before show times. Tickets also available online at www.harriscenter.net or by calling (916) 608-6888.

Parking Ample event parking is located adjacent to the Harris Center.

Parking permits are required for events taking place anytime Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays before 5pm. A parking permit is issued automatically with your ticket order for events during those times. Please place your permit in a visible location on your dashboard when you arrive at the events. Permits are not required Friday after 5 pm or on Saturday or Sunday. Permits are not provided for free events.

House Notes Emergency exits are indicated by green exit signs located above each exit. For your safety, please check for the location of the exit nearest to your seat.

As a courtesy to artists and other patrons, please turn off or silence cellular phones, pagers, or wristwatch alarms before start of the event, and refrain from texting during the performance.

Three sets of restrooms are located on the Stage Two end of the lobby, one upstairs and two downstairs.

Snacks and beverages are available before performances and at intermission at the Wells Fargo CafĂŠ located near the electronic donor wall, and at satellite service stations in the lobby. Food and beverages are not allowed in the theaters (bottled water is okay).

As of August 1, 2016, Folsom Lake College is a smoke, tobacco, and vape-free campus. Smoking and use of tobacco products is prohibited anywhere on campus.

Use of a ticket at the Harris Center constitutes acknowledgement of willingness to appear in photographs, video, and film taken in public areas of the facility and releases the Center, its Partners, and all others from liability resulting from use of such images.

Lost and Found Items Lost items will be held in the Coat Check room in the lobby until the end of the performance. Thereafter, please call (916) 6086888. Unclaimed items will be turned into FLC Campus Police Department after thirty days.

Accessibility and Listening Devices The Center is accessible to patrons with disabilities. Wheelchair seating is available in all venues. Portable wireless listening devices are available with a small, refundable deposit or a driver’s license. Please inform the Ticket Office of any special needs when ordering tickets.

Children All patrons are required to have a ticket, including youngsters sitting on laps. Parents are expected to take into account the subject and nature of performances when selecting shows for their children, and to make sure etiquette is part of the theatre going experience. Parents will be asked to remove disruptive children.

Presentations, Partners, and Productions The Harris Center for the Arts strives to inspire, include, and instruct. Through its PRESENTATIONS, the Center brings touring artists from around the world. PARTNERS are local and regional music, theatre, and dance companies who make the Center their home. PRODUCTIONS deepen the educational experience of Folsom Lake College, giving students and faculty an opportunity to develop their craft and present it to family, friends, and the broader community.
