I

’ve stepped out. Out of my comfort zone. The sunlight has beckoned me from my state of hibernation. Before I scarcely whiffed fresh air, only taking it in for short integrals in transition from the car to the front door. I’ve been so warm and safe until now. But not wanting to stay stuck in a rut of seasonal paralysis, I put away the Snuggie and ordered my dog to hide the wine bottle opener. I figured there’s no way he’s going to spill the beans on its location, no matter how much I beg.

Further out of my comfort zone, I’ve committed to a new schedule of working out and eating gluten-free. After a winter of inactivity, mac and cheese and faltering New Year’s resolutions, the past few weeks of working out and planning meals (aka stepping out of “comfortable”) have really taken their toll in both expected and unexpected ways. The other day I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a semi-truck, then run over. Just lifting my muscle-fatigued arms to put clothes on was excruciating.

“This too shall pass,” I told myself. I was right. The severe soreness and cravings for pan pizza have since faded to a surprising sensation of accomplishment. Having stepped beyond what I thought was comfortable has actually revealed that I wasn’t so comfortable after all.

With a newfound energy surplus, I am anxious to move down this month’s roster of “Fresh-Air Fun: 30 Outdoor Escapes.” Biking, skydiving, Hula-Hooping, barbecuing, geocaching, fishing, rafting, racing, horseback riding, picnicking… and the list goes on with heaps of local fun things to do outside. From this moment on (well, until winter rolls around again), there should be no excuse for boring weekends inside. Oh, and be sure to check out Emily Peter’s 10 Spot with the best apps to take outside!

A: Don’t wait until later to get involved with your community and serve others.

A: I generally have a positive attitude and enjoy like-minded people. I also have a way of leading others by example and injecting humor when appropriate.

A: On a local level, I support Placerville Kiwanis, New Morning Youth and Family Services, Sugarloaf Station Foundation, Center for ViolenceFree Relationships, El Dorado Community Foundation, Boys & Girls Club and Kiwanis Family House.

For Zappettini, it’s all about family— not just his own, but the larger family of El Dorado County residents. Although his daughter is now an adult, he remains passionate about children’s causes; many of his activities, such as his volunteer work for the Teen Court program with the El Dorado Superior Court, are about protecting kids and keeping them out of the juvenile court system. “I think it’s important, if we are able, to create a better world for the next generation,” Zappettini shares.

s a child, Paul Zappettini remembers watching his mother doing whatever she could to help others, despite having six children of her own. “She led by example,” he recalls. “She taught me the importance of giving back.” Zappettini is now an attorney for a personal injury law firm in Sacramento, but he dedicates most of his free time to community outreach. He is currently president of Placerville Kiwanis and serving a two-year term as board president of the El Dorado Community Foundation, a group that raises funds in support of area nonprofits. Many of his family members (including his mother) are involved in the foundation—so much so that they created the Zappettini Family Fund. Zappettini’s daughter, Gianna Zappettini, is a board member for the Sugarloaf Station Foundation. Each year, they help organize the Sugarloaf Summer

I

t’s time to get outside, be active and spring clean! With so many fun-filled programs, events and classes this month, getting some fresh air will be a breeze. First up, the Cameron Park Community Services District is sponsoring its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 19, at Rasmussen Park beginning at 10 a.m.; ages 10 and under are welcome to participate.

Clean out unwanted junk from your garage, or unwanted clippings and tree trimmings; then bring the items to the Spring Community Cleanup Day, taking place Saturday, April 26, at Christa McAuliffe Park and Camerado Springs Middle School parking lot from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Cameron Park Fire Explorers will be on hand to help unload items, as well as Snowline Hospice (to take gently used clothing donations). Acceptable items include yard waste, trash, general recycling and E-waste. Please no commercial waste, oil, batteries, tires, rocks, dirt/concrete, large appliances or hazardous waste.

On the same day, at the Community Center’s parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon, sell your treasures or hunt for new ones at the Swap Meet.

On Saturday, April 12, it will be a Dog Day Afternoon at the recently completed off-leash dog park located at Hacienda Park.

Celebrate with the Cameron Park CSD and El Dorado Dog Owners Guild (EDDOG) at the park’s grand opening. Enjoy activities, learn dog park etiquette, and visit with an array of dog care vendors. For more details, visit eddog.org.

On Tuesday, April 8, don’t miss the monthly (and free!) Coffee, Tea and Friends program from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Social Room of the Community Center. This month’s topic, “Is it Possible to Have Ageless Joy?” will be presented by Bob Billingsley from the Mountain Democrat. After, from 1-3 p.m., New West Haven Assisted Living will present a game of bingo.

Registration is currently open for Instructional T-Ball for ages 4-7.

This fun program will start Saturdays in May and is a perfect introduction to the game of baseball.

Get moving this month! Yoga, Zumba, tai chi, hula, ballroom dance and Bellyfit classes are now offered for adults; and the kids won’t want to miss hula and ballet. If music is what makes your toes tap, try a ukulele class. Cooking courses are also heating up, including “All About Appetizers” by Chef Susan, “Ultimate Chocolate Truffles” with Karen, or “Cooking with Kids” with Little Chefs World.

On May 3, the Spring Antique, Craft and Garden Show is coming to town. This indoor/outdoor show—featuring a variety of garden accessories, antiques and hand-made crafts specific for the spring season—is free and will include a wine tasting fund-raiser sponsored

A: A jewelry appraisal is an official document that accurately identifies, describes and evaluates your valuable jewelry based on the current prices of gold or platinum, quality of the metal, gemstones and workmanship. The appraisal should include a photograph of your item(s).

Usually appraisal is needed for insurance replacement value (in case your jewelry is damaged, lost or stolen), which is what it would cost to purchase a like item, similar in quality of materials and craftsmanship. A thorough, detailed appraisal is essential when trying to recover and identify your precious possessions. Because gold and gem prices change, insurance companies require an updated appraisal every five years. Our appraisal department is often asked to examine and evaluate a deceased loved one’s entire jewelry collection; if there were no previous appraisals (or outdated ones) a family is often clueless as to each piece‘s value and therefore unsure of how to equally divide among family members. In such cases, there are estate appraisals where the values will be lower than insurance replacement appraisals.

When it comes to catering, what’s the difference

between a gratuity and a service charge?

A:

For catering, a service charge compensates the caterer for site surveys, overhead, proposals, tastings, menu research, food prep (prior to the day of service) and phone conversations. Gratuity goes to the wait staff and kitchen crew for on-site labor the day of the client’s event. Caterers and event planners spend most of their time pouring over menus, timelines, pull sheets, rental orders, weather forecasts, load schedules, staffing matrices and production sheets. The service of the food and beverage is actually a smaller piece, but is most important! As the saying goes, “It’s all in the prep,” which is doubly important when planning catered events or delivering food for a client’s special, once-in-a-lifetime event.

“I

once caught a fish THIS BIG!” Perhaps your children won’t believe you, but soon, they may have a fish story of their own to tell. Get the kids hooked on fishing at the 27th Annual Spring Fishing Derby and Casting Contest.

Thanks to the El Dorado County Fish and Game Commission, Lumsden Pond will be full of rainbow trout just in time for the festivities. The Fishing Derby takes place at Lumsden Park on Saturday, April 12. Toddlers through 2nd graders will fish from 9-11 a.m., and participants in grades 3-8 will throw their poles in from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Awards for the longest fish will be given to each age group. Arrive with your own pole and some bait; fishing licenses are not required for children participating in the Fishing Derby.

Children can also show their skills in the Casting Contest, sponsored by the Placerville Lions Club. And when the fish have stopped biting for the day, the little ones can grab a bite—the Placerville Kiwanis Club will supply each child with a free hot dog and soft drink.

The entire event is free and no advance registration is required. Rain or shine, don’t let this great family event be the one that got away!

Filo Bakery & Café

ocated on Placerville’s charming Main Street sits Filo Bakery & Café, a great spot to enjoy freshly made sandwiches, pastries and pastas. After spending hours wandering through local shops, building up our appetites, my friend and I decided to step inside the cafe for dinner. On a warmer evening the patio would be an inviting place to dine, but as the sun began to set, we moved inside. Behind the counter was a sweet lady who welcomed us and waited patiently as we chose our meals. The reasonably priced pastas—which also came with homemade garlic bread—beckoned my attention and I decided on the Toscana Chicken Pasta. My dining partner opted for the Fettuccini Alfredo. Our eyes lit up when the food arrived; my Toscana was beautiful—fresh penne was topped with bright cherry tomatoes, grilled chicken, spinach and basil with feta cheese crumbled over top. The accompanying garlic bread was all that you can imagine—moist on the interior with a crispy and delicious exterior.

Equally satisfying was the atmosphere—it felt as though we’d been invited over for dinner with friends. utomaker and successful businessman Henry Ford once said: “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” That is exactly what the members of the Diamond Springs Art Association (DSAA) are doing each week. Since 1978, the DSAA has promoted interest in the arts and arranged venues to bring artists and the public together to enjoy paintings and drawings created in the community. “A lot of our members thought they couldn’t paint...like me,” DSAA Treasurer Joyce Becker explains, “but I could and you can, too.” Although the group doesn’t offer formal instruction, veteran painters do take novices under their wings to help them get started and offer support.

On any given Monday and Thursday at the Mother Lode Lions Hall in Diamond Springs, between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., the DSAA holds biweekly painting and “just having a good time” sessions; here, frivolity and camaraderie are in full force. The group, which consists of about 35 members, ranging in age from 55 to 90, knows how to paint and party. “We are a very social group,” explains Spring Art Show Chair Bonnie Valentine. “It’s very good for people to get out and be with others.”

baby steps 5 Infertility Myths Debunked

F

or couples who are infertile, or more correctly, “subfertile,� seeing as they might conceive with some help, the pressure can be overwhelming. They often turn to friends and family for advice, hoping they have the secret to attaining that positive test stick. Women try tricks like lying upside down for hours after sex, and men ditch their tightywhities for loose-fitting boxers. But are these just myths, or do they actually increase your chances of making a baby? Style spoke with Dr. Michael Murray, OB/GYN and reproductive endocrinologist at the Northern California Fertility Medical Center in Roseville, to get the truth for those struggling to conceive.

MYTH #1: Most infertility problems stem from the female.

TRUTH: Infertility issues occur equally in males and females.

When someone is having trouble conceiving, there are four

main factors that are tested: eggs, sperm, uterus and tubes. “Once we do those four major tests, it breaks down to 40, 40 and 20,” says Dr. Murray. “40 percent is female, 40 percent is male, and 20 percent are attributed to both male and female together.”

MYTH #2: A woman is more likely to get pregnant if she has sex when her basal body temperature (BBT) goes up.

TRUTH: Many women trying to get pregnant take their BBT each morning, because it normally increases on the second half of the menstrual cycle when the body produces progesterone. “However, by the time the temperature goes up, a woman has already ovulated and missed the window of fertility,” says Dr. Murray. Instead, he recommends having sperm waiting in the fallopian tubes for ovulation, since sperm can live up to three days after ejaculation into the female body. In other words: sex before ovulation.

MYTH #3: A woman lying with her legs elevated for two hours after sex will increase her chances of conceiving.

TRUTH: While gravity can cause sperm to leak from the vagina before passing through the cervical canal, it’s only necessary to implement lie down time for 10 minutes after sex. “In this time, the sperm will have traveled—if it’s ever going to—past the cervix, into the fallopian tubes. If it hasn’t made it by then, sperm in the vagina will start to die because the PH in the vagina is hostile to sperm,” says Dr. Murray.

MYTH #4: Too much exercise can be bad for fertility.

TRUTH: For men, the only exercise that could inhibit healthy sperm count would be biking more than 50 miles a week, due to possible trauma to the testicles. For women, fertility can be affected in college athletes or Olympians—in other words, females who partake in very vigorous workouts. “These women burn so many calories that the brain wants to save some and says, ‘Hey, I’ll save some energy by not bleeding,’ so they stop having menstrual cycles,” says Dr. Murray.

However, he does encourage moderate exercise for women trying to get pregnant. “A healthy diet and lifestyle is always good for those trying to conceive.”

MYTH #5: A man should abstain from ejaculation for several days before having sex.

TRUTH: In actuality, prolonged periods between ejaculations are not good for those trying to conceive. “Guys with normal sperm counts don’t need two or more days to replenish their sperm supply,” says Dr. Murray. “Sperm that’s waiting to be ejaculated and sits around for more than five days start to die off, so abstinence longer than five days will decrease the number of moving sperm.” The old adage of “sex every other day,” when trying to conceive, is good advice.

hile many a yesteryear parent allowed their children to pack up for a sleepover without much concern, modern-day moms and dads are giving more thought to factors like readiness and safety. So, how do you know if your child is ready for the almighty overnight?

Dee-Anna R. Dreier, Psy.D., MFT, in Placerville, provides us with the A-to-Zs.

instincts, but “when children can express a genuine interest in staying over at a friend’s home, it’s a good time to explore the option,” notes Dreier, recommending you take into account the child’s level of separation anxiety. In other words, the last time you two lovebirds flew the coop, did your baby bird spread her wings or fail to come out of her shell?

Put another way, “When the child stays with a family member, a parent might question how they react,” Dreier explains. “Do they have fun? Do they become upset when dropped off?” While answers will provide a

good gauge, also factor in bedwetting issues (a sure way to fuel a child’s embarrassment if an accident were to occur while sleeping over at a peer’s house), along with frequent nightmares or sleepwalking—all signs of whether or not a child is sufficiently steeled for a sleepover. Also consider factors such as child development, maturity, and one’s ability to handle responsibility and respect rules.

For Dreier, “When children are able to speak up for themselves if feeling uncomfortable, and know the difference between right and wrong behavior—their own as well as adults’

SAFETY MEASURES SET PARENTAL CONTROLS. Know and trust the other parents— meet them in person prior to sending your child to their home.

TAKE CHARGE. Confirm that other parents will be in the home during the sleepover—especially crucial for adolescents prone to “sneaking out” and going to areas potentially dangerous or off-limits to your child.

MAKE SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS. Will the parents be having their own friends over during the sleepover? Will other children or siblings also be there?

Know before your child goes.

PUT THEM AT EASE. Tell your child where you’ll be (even if that’s at home). Reassure her that it’s OK to come home. Make sure she knows all your phone numbers in case of an emergency. Discuss a safety plan so she knows what is and is not appropriate, and what to do if there is an uncomfortable situation.

and peers’—this is a good indicator that they are mentally ready to attend a sleepover.”

If the answer to a proposed overnight is “no” (or not yet), “inform the child of your decision in a clear and concise way,” with the understanding that, though he or she is likely to be upset, it won’t last forever, says Dreier. Or maybe you concede to the level with which you are comfortable. In the case of a slumber party, consider allowing the child to attend for a few hours, not all night.

In the end, a little compromise is likely to go a long way until your child is ready.

Internet and cable access. Also, where will your child be bunking? Will siblings be involved in the sleepover—and do you know them?

Address these and other reasonable concerns with hosting parents and your children gingerly, advises Dreier. Casual inquiries “shows the parents of the child hosting the sleepover that you care about the safety and well-being of your child and entrust them with their care,” she says.

Although they are unable to expand their reach at this time, Meuser hopes to one day see the creation of a facility for pregnant teens.

“If a woman in need called, I would encourage her to come to MTMH as soon as possible,” Meuser says. “The sooner she gets started, the better the outcome will be. I have been blessed with this ministry, which is just part of my everyday life.”

aving served as a crisis pregnancy hotline volunteer for more than 20 years, Jane Meuser is all too familiar with the desperation pregnant women in physically, sexually and mentally unstable situations experience. The mother of six says it troubled her to know there were children in her community entering the world under less than ideal circumstances. “Although I love infants, I have learned that I have to love their mothers,” she explains, “so the mother can learn to love herself and her baby.”

In 1998, Lucille Mosbacher, a member of Placerville’s St. Patrick Parish, approached Meuser with a proposal to transform a vacant convent opposite the church into a home for El Dorado County’s pregnant women in need.

Meuser poured her enthusiasm and experience into the project and the non-denominational Mother Teresa Maternity Home (MTMH) opened its doors less than a year later. “[It’s] more than a temporary shelter. We seek to help the women living in the home [put] their lives on a more positive track,” explains MTMH Board President Barbara Goyette. “Otherwise these women would be homeless or in need of other shelter, and the children born would be more likely to be damaged by lack of prenatal care.”

With the help of donations, fund-raisers and grants, MTMH has the ability to serve six women at a time through their child’s first three months. A full-time staff provides 24-hour supervision and encouragement as each soon-to-be and new mother works toward their GED or looks for part-time work.

The home offers a completely drug- and alcohol-free environment, and residents are required to participate in counseling and develop a plan for life after their stay.

“Seeing someone complete the home’s program by learning the skills to prepare them for a healthy and stable life is heart-

What’s more, the costs are reasonable, sometimes free, and the information is easy to find.

Games and movies are senior center staples, but you’ll also find classes that demand fitness or improve on it—from yoga and Zumba to hiking, softball and tennis. If you have the travel bug, sign up for day, weekend and even overseas trips that provide companionship, safety and put someone else behind the wheel.

For a small donation, most programs provide nutritious noontime meals (often through Meals On Wheels, which serves ages 60 and up). You’ll also find health support, such as blood pressure screenings, nutrition classes and Alzheimer’s counseling. Generally, if a class runs in one district, you’re likely to find it in others.

Despite the economy’s downturn, the area’s senior facilities are flourishing.

competition from steam-operated sawmills eventually put Sutter’s Mill out of business.

After its abandonment, the structure was used as a residence and lumber was salvaged for use in other buildings; in 1861, high water washed away what remained.

The Society of California Pioneers located timbers from the original mill and marked the site in 1924. Dr. Robert F. Heizer, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, conducted an archeological examination of the site in 1947; his detailed notes shed light on the mill’s size and construction.

In 1967, the El Dorado County Historical Society, the State Department of Parks and Recreation, and citizens raised funds and volunteered to reconstruct the replica sawmill that’s currently found at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park (MGSHP). Although not constructed at the original mill site, the replica is based on Marshall’s drawings and an old photograph. The 19,000 board feet of lumber used were hand cut and adzed, and the structure was assem-

ohn Sutter, a Swiss immigrant, arrived in the Sacramento Valley in 1839 hoping to build an agricultural empire. He acquired a land grant of 48,827 acres and built Sutter’s Fort near the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers. He called his establishment New Helvetia and was soon growing wheat, cotton and vegetables, and raising beef, sheep and horses.

As New Helvetia grew, Sutter’s Mill, January 19, 1848 so did the demand for lumber. In 1847, Sutter sent James Marshall, a carpenter and millwright, into the Sierra to select bled using wooden pegs. On January 24, a sawmill site. room to reap a mudroom’s benefits. A narrow hall, a partial wall and even space carved out between wall studs will do just fine.

PAINT THE WALLS MAKE STORAGE SMART Instead of letting a mudroom become cluttered, take advantage of its potential.

Counters, tables and benches can be storage pieces that collect and organize both day-to-day and seasonal items. A built-in cabinet that resembles a set of lockers will allow individual family members to have their own space. Other essentials for the room might include an umbrella stand, boot tray, baskets and a chalk or message board.

TIDY ON A BUDGET Many cost-effective storage solutions are tailored specifically for utility spaces. You’ll find a wealth of inexpensive storage ideas— think wall-mounted racks for boots, shelving for hats and hooks for sports gear—at home centers and container stores.

LAUNDRY ROOM INVITE FUNCTIONALITY A full-sized laundry room offers more options than just doing laundry. There are miles of trails through El Dorado County, which means there’s a lot of ground to cover and sights to see. A popular trail is the El Dorado Trail, which extends the entire length of El Dorado County from the western county line to the Lake Tahoe Basin. Some segments feature Class I bike paths, others are currently in development and open for use as a natural trail, or proposed for improvement. Cronan Ranch Trails Park in Pilot Hill contains 12 miles of terrain for biking as well. .

BIKE TRAIL ETIQUETTE Local trails are a great place for fun, recreation and transportation. Follow these guidelines for respectful and responsible use of city trails, so everyone can enjoy them.

General: • Show courtesy to other trail users at all times • Respect the environment and the rights of property owners • Don’t block the trail • Travel at a safe speed • Pass with care • Bicyclists keep right except to pass • Pedestrians keep left to face oncoming cyclists • Be aware, look and listen • Avoid covering both ears with headphones as it can be difficult to hear what’s going on around you—this is the law for bicyclists • Establish eye contact when passing • Look before switching lanes or directions of travel • When you need to stop, move to the edge of the trail or trail shoulder and leave room for others to pass

No matter your skill level, there’s a race for you! For the experienced, long-distance runner, sign up for the American River 50M on April 5 or the Gold Rush 100K on May 10. For those looking to run their first race, check out Capital City Classic 5K/10K/10M on April 27 or Folsom’s 31st Annual Run with Nature (5K/10K trail run) on May 17. This time last year, bass fishing was strong at Folsom Lake while the Sacramento River was a favorite for striped bass. Popular spots at the river include Bryte Beach, Minnow Hole and South River Road. In El Dorado County, American River (Silver Fork Riverton), Stumpy Meadows, American River South Fork Coloma, El Dorado Forebay, Kirkwood Lake, Consumnes River, Ice House Reservoir, Kirkwood Lake, Loon Lake and Union Valley Reservoir are all popular places to throw the pole in. California State Parks’ general regulations state that anyone 16 years and older must have a valid California fishing license in their immediate possession while fishing. The department’s website also details specific regulations for fishing limits.

Though this activity is geared more for extreme adrenaline junkies, it’s one adventure that should not be missed. It does t a ke a w h o l e d a y, so plan ahead and make a reservation w i t h t h e s kyd i v i n g school of your choice.

If it’s your first jump, yo u ’ re re q u i re d to jump tandem, where you’re connected to a harness attached to an instructor. You’ll spend the first part of the day in training, learning how to jump properly. Typically you have the option to do a 60-second free-fall (from 13,000 feet) or SkyDance SkyDiving a 90-second free-fall (from 18,000 feet). Then, enjoy a 5-7 minute parachute ride back down to the ground. It’s also up to you to decide whether to get a video of your jump. Set up a lemonade stand.

If your kiddos are looking to earn some cash to fund other spring and summer adventures, encourage them to start a lemonade stand. There’s nothing quite as rewarding as earning your own money. Sure, you may need to invest in their business plan by supplying the ingredients, but any parent knows it’s worth it. You may even want to use the same brilliant b u s i n e s s s t ra t egy of the young California girl who uses her lemonade stand as a way to bring awareness to human slavery and trafficking. Through her donation website and the lemonade stand (where she originally charged $2, then left the price up to her customers), she’s raised $30,000 and is well on her way to reach her goal of $150,000. So whether it’s for profit or for fund-raising, a lemonade stand can be more successful than you think.

THE BEST LEMONADE RECIPES EVER Fresh Lemonade Makes 20 servings Prep: 30 minutes; Cook: 5 minutes; Ready in 4 hours 35 minutes 1-3/4 cups white sugar 8 cups water

See who has the best skills on the court! Before you begin, decide the order of shooting. The first player will attempt to make a basket. If he/she is successful, every subsequent player must attempt to make a basket using the same technique, stance and location on the court. If a player fails to make the shot, he/she gets one of the five penalty letters: H, O, R, S, and E. The round continues as each player attempts the original shot. When the round is complete, the ball is passed to the next player in turn, who is allowed to shoot with a new technique, stance and location on the court. When a player has been assigned all five letters, he/she is eliminated. The game is played until all but one player has been eliminated, and therefore declared the winner.

1-1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice 1. In a small pot, combine sugar and 1 cup water. Boil and stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat. Allow to cool to room temperature. Cover, and refrigerate until chilled.

2. Squeeze lemons until you have 1 1/2 cups lemon juice. Remove seeds from juice, but leave pulp. In a pitcher, stir the lemon juice, chilled syrup and 7 cups water.

Fresh Strawberry Lemonade Makes 12 servings Prep: 15 minutes; Ready in 15 minutes 8 large strawberries, halved 7 cups water, divided 1 cup + 2 tbsp sugar 2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice 1. In a blender, place strawberries and 2 tablespoons sugar. Pour 1 cup water over sugared strawberries. Blend until the chunks transform into juice.

2. Combine strawberry juice, 6 cups water, 1 cup sugar, and freshly squeezed lemon juice in a large pitcher. Stir until blended. Chill before serving.

Paint rocks.

Let your imagination go wild as you paint designs, animals, words, scenes and more on various-sized stones. To get started, you’ll need to clean the rocks with a small amount of dish detergent and water, scrubbing them with a sponge or old toothbrush to remove dirt.

Sanitize the stones after washing and rinsing by adding a little bleach to a bucket of clean water. Then rinse again, and allow the stones to dry completely. Once the rocks are ready, you may want to prime any that are smooth, dark or rough and pitted. Use one to two coats of white or light-colored acrylic or craft paint. When the prime is dry, you can start painting the rocks any way you want. Then, protect and seal the paint with a varnish. Do this outside and you’ll worry less about the post-painting cleanup!

According to geocaching.com, there are 2.3 million active geocaches and more than six million geocachers worldwide. With numbers like that, there are likely to be some geocaches right in your neighborhood. To find them, use geocaching.com to search for the nearest geocaches to your town (based on zip codes).

You’ll then use a GPS-enabled device to navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and attempt to find the geocache hidden at that location. It’s a family-friendly activity where you can have fun, explore, get some exercise, and work on skills such as problem solving, map reading and math.

The steak knife was really more of a formality since the meat was so soft you hardly had to cut it.

ucked inside The National Hotel on Main Street in Jackson, one could easily miss the entrance to Stanley’s.

Completely quiet, with the front door’s small glass panels entirely black, there’s no hint of the restaurant and bar behind it.

Once inside, however, everything oozes with oldworld elegance and Gold Rush charm: dark woods, plush booths, white tablecloths, light fixtures dripping with crystal, and a small fireplace casting a warm glow on the cream and tan walls.

My dining partner and I started off with grilled wild prawns served with a preserved lemon celery root slaw, cashews, grilled pineapple and salsa verde. The dish had a tropical flair to it, and the zingy slaw even upstaged the prawns. Next up was a truly incredible German Butterball potato soup with roasted mushrooms, crostini, Gruyère and white truffle oil. It was creamy, rich and perfectly smooth—eschewing the fine grit that most potato soups leave behind.

The savory flavors danced across our palates in perfect harmony.

For entrées, my husband opted for the seared duck breast with coconut curry-braised baby bok choy, baby shiitake mushrooms and jasmine rice. The duck was simple but rich, and taking a bit of mushroom with some of the curry sauce alongside it brought the entire dish to life. I absolutely had to try the filet with Gorgonzola walnut butter and toasted mushroom barley. The steak knife was really more of a formality since the meat was so soft you hardly had to cut it. Not to be outdone, the barley side was a bold accompaniment with just-enough heft and subtlety to round out the entrée.

To be entirely honest, my husband had to talk me into the Primitivo spice cake for dessert. I was happy he did. It arrived bubbling around the edges with a purple hue forming over the white ramekin (showcasing the wine in its name). As opposed to the one-note chocolate barrages of other offerings, the smooth, dense and brownie-like cake was a cascade of layered flavors: cinnamon, chocolate, berry and the distinct tannic tang of wine. It was a sultry ending, indeed, to an old-world decadent evening.

rom the moment my dining companion and I stepped into the Cantonese-style Lotus 8, it was clear: This is not your typical Chinese food joint.

Gone are the tacky redand-white paper placemats with the Chinese zodiac; instead, solid yellow tablecloths, dark wood chairs and rich red walls (adorned with a large canvas sporting the namesake lotus) create a distinctly modern feel. And for once, the use of the word “authentic” isn’t just a marketing ploy, as evidenced by menu options like stir-fried beef with bitter melon, or sautéed shrimp with sliced kiwi. For the less adventurous (like me) they also have a diverse lineup of popular options.

We started with an appetizer of fried calamari, which came out in big chunks as opposed to the more familiar little rings. The remarkably tender fish paired with the salty, crispy batter was an awesome combination and, while it was tempting just to eat it plain, the horseradishredolent hot mustard dipping sauce kept us coming back for more.

The Mongolian beef combination plate, served with a generous portion of chicken chow mein, was chock-full of tender meat and managed to avoid the common problem where the “star” of the dish becomes veggies rather than beef. Lotus 8’s Singapore vermicelli was a surprisingly succulent combination of thin but toothsome vermicelli noodles, shrimp, barbecued pork, onion, ginger and curry. Unlike so many of its gummy and heavy sauced counterparts, this nimble dish was both hearty and light.

Saving room for the piping hot, extremely fresh and chewy house-made Chinese buns is an absolute must. Whether you order them filled with lotus seed or the slightly sweet red bean paste, you won’t go wrong.

After our meal, the waiter even chatted with us about some of the dim sum places he likes in town and mentioned a few dishes we should try next time we’re at our favorite joint.

How’s that for hospitality?

taste SPRING RISOTTO WITH GREEN AND WHITE ASPARAGUS From The Glorious Vegetables of Italy by Domenica Marchetti (Chronicle Books, 2013, $30)

Position the oven rack 4 inches below the broiler before preheating. Arrange the asparagus on a rimmed baking sheet to fit snugly in one layer. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of the olive oil and sprinkle a little salt and pepper over the top. Use your fingers to rotate the spears to coat with the oil and seasonings.

Broil for about 4 minutes, until browned and just tender; check often to prevent the spears from burning. Remove asparagus from the oven and let cool slightly. Cut the spears crosswise into bite-size pieces and transfer to a bowl.

Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and the butter in a large, heavybottomed pot over medium-low heat. When the butter is melted and begins to sizzle, add the onion and cook, stirring frequently, for 7 minutes, or until softened and translucent. Stir in the rice and 1 teaspoon of salt and cook, while stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes, until the rice grains are shiny and glassy-looking. Raise the heat to medium-high and pour in the wine; let it bubble for a minute or so, until almost absorbed.

dinner date Food and Beer for the Season Reduce the heat to medium-low and begin to add the broth, a ladleful at a time, stirring frequently, until the liquid is almost absorbed. You do not need to stir the risotto constantly, but be sure to stir it often, making sure, the grains do not stick to the bottom of the pot.

Continue to cook the risotto and add broth, one or two ladlefuls at a time, for 18-20 minutes, until the rice is almost but not completely cooked. It should be al dente—still rather firm and chalky at the center. Check by tasting a few grains. Gently stir in the asparagus and a little more broth. When the broth has been absorbed, stir in the cheeses and the parsley. Stir in a final ladleful of broth to achieve a creamy texture. The risotto should not be stiff or runny; it should mound softly on a spoon. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the risotto into shallow, rimmed bowls and serve immediately. Serves 6.

Describe your business.

StemExpress procures, preserves and delivers human blood, tissue, bone marrow and primary cells to biomedical researchers at top research universities, labs and private institutions—in the U.S. and internationally—that work on drug discovery, medical device development and cures for diseases.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?

I was a licensed EMT in the trauma center and a surgical technician in the operating room working on organ and tissue transplants. I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to medical research so that scientists could focus on discovering and refining disease treatments rather than Band-Aid the problem.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

Seventy percent of our employees live in El Dorado County. We have a relationship with Marshall Hospital that will be mutually beneficial for years to come, and we give the community access to participate in medical research by donating blood, bone marrow and tissue.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?

Creating StemExpress and being able to bring cutting-edge medical research to El Dorado County.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

To unwind, I like going to the El Dorado Rod & Gun Club to trap shoot.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?

I like the enchiladas rancheras with chicken at Cascada.

Where do you and your family go locally to have fun?

We enjoy horseback riding at Cronan Ranch and Jenkinson Lake.

What’s your favorite childhood memory?

We did extensive traveling because my mother worked for KLM Airlines. We traveled to Holland once a month.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

I’m very proud to have created the only fully licensed, in-home dog-boarding business in the area, and to be the only certified dog trainer in the region providing an in-home, reward-based and force-free board and train program, aka “puppy training camp.” I had other careers in the past, in which I excelled but wasn’t happy. For years, I thought, “It’s too bad I can’t make my living working with animals—it’s what I love the most,” until one day the thought occurred to me, “Maybe I can.” I set out doing research about what that would look like, started making the change, and never looked back. I’ve spent the last 12 years building my business of providing in-home dog boarding, rewardbased dog training, as well as pet photography, and I’ve never been happier.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

When I relocated my business from San Francisco to Placerville in 2007, I immediately connected with regional animal welfare and rescue groups. I fostered and trained dogs with NorSled and served on the board of the El Dorado Dog Owners Guild, and later providing them with a challenge grant to build the first dog park in the county. What’s more, I’m one of several photographers at PAWED who takes high-quality photos of shelter animals to give them better odds of getting adopted quickly.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?

We’re lucky to have many wonderful restaurants, but I occasionally joke that I really moved to Placerville because of Sweetie Pie’s! (It doesn’t hurt that it’s dog friendly either.)

And finally, customer service is…?

Providing the high standard of care and training that I would want for my own dogs; always pursuing continuing education about the best practices in dog care and training (which means using only scientifically proven, force-free training); and being prepared, dedicated and conscientious so that my clients never have to worry about their dogs.

(Mis)adventures in Waterskiing

M

y buddy Bill and I spent most of the summer of 1982, the year we graduated high school, waterskiing an isolated little bay in southern Puget Sound. We lived minutes from the water, my dad had a boat, and for the last time in our lives—we had that kind of time. We hit the water every chance we could.

Other than a few houses along the shoreline, the inlet had no marina or other services to attract boaters, which meant we (usually) had it to ourselves. We were surprised the day we saw a sailboat anchored out in the middle, and even more surprised to see a couple young ladies in bikinis on board, sunning their bodies near the bow. Best of all, they looked to be about our age and there appeared to be no parents on board…or guys. Chicks sailing solo? Cool! We knew instantly what we must do.

We’d been skiing for weeks now and our skills were as sharp as the ladies’ tan lines.

of spray, that would be it—we’d be allowed to board their vessel like coast guards conducting a mandatory babe inspection.

Since it was my boat, I decided who skied first. Naturally, I went. I jumped over the side, slipped on my 67” O’Brien slalom and waited for Bill to finish cursing. When the rope grew taught, I hollered, “Hit it!” and rose from the water like an aquatic phoenix in cut-off jeans.

I had a great run, too, cutting savagely, dipping one shoulder to the water, then careening back across the wake on the edge of my ski (and catastrophe) before again seeking that moment when the boat’s pull vanishes and I quickly, gracefully, slid into another turn—the ski becoming like a craftsman’s knife, carving out generous chunks of awesome from the water’s gentle sheen.

I could tell my spray was epic: Its shadow swallowed me like a sea monster. I could hear it roar. I knew with certainty the girls

were mesmerized, watching in awe over the tops of their Ray-Bans, arguing over who would get to towel me off first.

I finished the run. But rather than release the rope and sink anti-climatically into the water, there was a small sandy shoal where Bill could navigate close, whip me around, and I could strain against the rope with everything I had, accelerating into open water and finishing parallel to the boat with no sound but the electric hiss of my ski. Then I would let go, ripping toward shore but timing it so as I approached, I would slow enough to step from the ski and trot triumphantly onto the sand. The girls wouldn’t even have to dry my hair. I gave Bill the signal to turn.

Here’s a fun fact: When a boat turns 180 degrees, with a bit of effort a skier can double the boat’s current speed. My dad’s boat topped out at 35 mph, which meant I was going about 70 when I released the rope. I also realized I was way too close to shore.

My ski slammed the beach with the force of a torpedo and launched me from its bindings. I somersaulted up the steep incline and came to rest face down in tidal grass. Nothing was broken, but I was coated in sand and my skin perforated by sharp shards of clamshells. Dozens of tiny cuts bled and stung from the saltwater. Most humiliating, I felt a breeze where there shouldn’t have been, and realized that somehow in my tumbling I had split the seat of my cut-offs crotch to waist, exposing my butt cheeks like two weathered pieces of sun-bleached driftwood.

Bill pulled up, roaring with the hefty, gleeful laughter guys only reserve for other guys who’ve done something monumentally stupid and painful but not quite deadly. The girls? Well, here’s another fun fact I learned: Carrying across the water, female laughter sounds remarkably like distant seagulls. And as Bill helped me into the boat, it occurred to me: I should’ve let him go first.
