t’s October and it’s time to get going. Holiday advertising reared it’s head LAST month— that’s right, people saw a gingerbread man touting store layaway programs and toy outlets publicizing hot holiday must-haves on air in September—all while many of us were still in swimsuits by the pool contemplating our Halloween costumes. I guess the hope for higher sales this holiday season (a figure that accounts for approximately 20 percent of all annual retail activity), is pushing merchants to roll up their sleeves and get competitive with a not-so-subliminal campaign message: “The earlier the better.” To top it off, this year there are only 25 days between Christmas and Black Friday (November 29). Last year, we had 32 days—five full weekends for credit-card-debt building; this year we’ve got just four weekends to do the damage. Luckily, this month Style has a few strategies to bolster your 2013 gifting game plan. Firstly, ahem, and without further ado, we present Style Magazine’s 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards with page after page of the area’s most favorite people, places, businesses and much more, all voted for by you, the readers! You will see there’s a category for just about everything, which makes for a handy list of possible places to patronize as you fill your sleigh this October and November (remember, the earlier the better because holiday shopping in December is just unheard of these days). People practically get whiplash if you dare say you haven’t finished your list by December. Disclaimer: If you are a shamed last minute shopper like me, don’t miss our December issue’s “Holiday Gift Guide” for instant ideas you can find locally. Secondly—both in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to aid in the accrual of amazing stocking stuffers—turn the page to this month’s FYI where you’ll find “The 10 Spot” complete with 10 purposeful (and pretty cool) products to make the month (and the holidays) pinker for everyone; when you purchase any of these items you will be contributing to the effort to kick breast cancer to the curb. Speaking of the curb, what about Thanksgiving? I almost forgot, just like everyone else on the fast track to tinsel tidings. One of my most favorite holidays, Turkey Day, is a time to savor your family’s finest food with cheer and appreciation for all. Since sharing is the name of the game on this day of feasts, we at Style hope you will help make our November issues even more bountiful. Send us (to info@stylemg.com) your favorite holiday recipe, a family photo, and a few words for what you are most thankful for this year…do it now! The final deadline is technically October 4, but we’re generous here and will allow a little leeway. Soon the days will shorten, crumbs of pumpkin pie will be all that’s left and the last smelly candle will be swiped from an empty shelf, right before your eyes…it’s game time! Until next month, shop smart, buy local…and check out our community’s winners on the way. — Desiree

Hamlin began reaching out to others, in the hope of giving a voice to the voiceless. She is the author of A Guide for Family and Friends of Someone Living in Domestic Violence; as well, she helped create the Survivors Advisory Council at the Center for Violence-Free Relationships in Placerville. Through her activities, Hamlin hopes to educate others from both the victim’s perspective and how best to help victims of domestic violence escape their abusers. According to Hamlin, domestic violence is far more common than we assume—occurring in an estimated one in

four households—and many victims deny the abuse out of simple self-preservation, aware that trying to leave could result in violence, or even death, for themselves or their loved ones. “Society can do a lot to eliminate domestic violence, if we just learn a little bit more about it,” Hamlin explains. “We just have to understand the dynamic, and not look away.” — Amber Foster

It wasn’t until 2004, when her husband was arrested for torture and other crimes, that Hamlin’s story of decades of physical and psychological abuse began to see the light of day. Her ex-husband is now serving life in prison, while Hamlin and her children continue their efforts to recover from the traumatic experiences. To help with this process of recovery,

orget variety, pumpkin is the spice of my life. Something about the combination of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves makes me “fall” in love. A recent autumn afternoon had me hankering for a breath of fresh air, something sweet and a savory snack to boot, so I departed Style headquarters and hoofed it to the family owned and independently operated Cooper’s Coffee House (formerly a franchise under the name It’s a Grind). The cheery staff greeted me with a smile and immediate assistance. Although the display case’s copious confections (think layered dessert bars, buttery scones, gluten-free brownies, etc.) tempted my sweet tooth, I opted for Coop’s Original Breakfast Burrito and a Pumpkin Spice Latte—which, unlike other coffeehouse chains, Cooper’s serves all year long. The burrito, scratch-made by local catering company Kettle Kreations, was built with the perfect ratio of softly scrambled eggs, diced potatoes, bacon, salty sausage (without knocking my taste buds over with spice) and, to marry everything together, gooey cheese—all tucked inside a chewy, steaming hot tortilla. The accompanying latte—made with pumpkin-flavored syrup, steamed coconut milk (a delicious, dairy-free alternative), and a showering of whipped cream dusted with pumpkin pie spice—was the sweet ending I’d been hoping for and the start of a new addiction. hen the Folsom Symphony launched its first season in 2004, it wanted what every new arts organization wants: a second season. “Folsom has the musicians and cultural level for this to be successful,” Bruce Woodbury, symphony co-founder, told Style in March of 2004. “I hope the community will get behind it.” Now starting its 10th season, the Folsom Symphony has successfully woven itself into the region’s arts tapestry. The symphony’s first big break came when Maestro Michael Neumann became its music director and brought a worldclass level of leadership and talent to the organization. Funny thing is, back in 2004, the symphony’s organizers thought Neumann was out of their league. “We only asked him to be a consultant to evaluate a short list of potential conductors,” Woodbury says. “But when he [saw the] support and partnerships the symphony had behind it, he asked for the position. We were thrilled.” Neumann’s connections to other musicians through the Sacramento Youth Symphony opened a gold mine of top-tier talent, as the Folsom Symphony sought to build an orchestra. Woodbury, who plays French horn and had embarked on creating the symphony with the hope of actually performing in it, saw the caliber of musicians Neumann was recruiting and gracefully stepped aside as that hope was quickly, but pleasantly dashed. The first season saw only one perfor24 stylemg.com - October 2013

mance, but it was of such quality that it built a following and launched a second season with four performances. Season three launched with five, and as the quality of the symphony continued to improve, the following continued to grow. Even Folsom City Council Member Kerri Howell became one of the symphony’s biggest fans. “It doesn’t matter what kind of music you like; if you like music at all you should go to a performance,” Howell says. “You can enjoy it if you’re seven years old or 97, but buy tickets fast—they always sell out.” Making the performances even better has been the move to the state-of-theart Harris Center for the Arts at Folsom Lake College. “The new theater has been a wonderful platform for our musicians to showcase their talent,” Woodbury says. “The acoustics are phenomenal and there’s not a bad seat in the house. It’s the pride of Folsom for performing arts.” The symphony’s 10th season kicks off October 7 at the Granite Bay Golf Club with Playing for the Future, a golf and benefit gala celebration. On October 12, don’t miss Titans, a performance of

partnership within the community; despite our success we’re still something of a secret in the region,” Woodbury says. “We want to show the community this is an organization they can be proud of and benefit from for years to come.”

three pieces including Wagner’s “Rienzi Overture,” Borodin’s “Polotsian Dances (Prince Igor),” and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “Titan.” As the symphony looks to the future, however, there are more than solely performances in mind. Plans are in the works to expand the symphony’s community engagement, particularly in helping underprivileged students see concerts and build an appreciation for the music. “We hope to build an even more robust

health&wellness increasing their ability to detect a lump, skin dimpling, nipple discharge or a lump in the axilla (arm pit). Yet, Dr. Cherry stresses, “Routine screening mammograms [are] still the gold standard for detection of breast cancer.” The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recently changed their guidelines, recommending mammograms every other year for women over age 50 while the American Cancer Society still recommends them annually for women over 40. This conflicting information can be both frustrating and confusing when trying to decide what the best approach to your breast health is. Dr. Cherry explains, “Studies show that, on average, cancers in women over age 50 grow more slowly and thus

f you ask around, almost everyone can tell you about a friends’, family members’, or even their own fight against breast cancer. With the staggering statistics— one in every eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime (breastcancer.org)—most of us have had an intimate experience with the disease. Thankfully, there’s hope on the horizon.

EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES Education and awareness are crucial, as early detection is one of the largest factors in breast cancer survival rates. Dr. Michelle Cherry, board certified OB/GYN with Marshall Medical, says that doing regular self breast exams, a key component to detecting breast cancer early, empowers women by making them familiar with their breasts and 26 stylemg.com - October 2013

longer intervals between mammograms may be reasonable. However, coming from a family with a history of breast cancer, I will continue with the recommendations of the American Cancer Society and order yearly mammograms on my patients.” Dr. Cherry stresses that each patient’s case is different and the risks and benefits of mammograms should be discussed with your doctor. Digital breast tomosynthesis, referred to as 3-D mammography, is the most advanced technology to date, providing better cancer detection by digitally reconstructing a 3-D image of the breast. It is used in conjunction with traditional 2-D mammography to create better imaging of the breast tissue, allowing radiologists

THE INNOVATION OF 3-D MAMMOGRAMS Improved early detection Reduced number of false positives Improved imaging

TOP RISK FACTORS GENDER: Women are 100 times more likely than men to develop breast cancer AGE: Two out of three invasive breast cancers are found in women over 55 FAMILY HISTORY: Having a mother, sister or daughter with breast cancer

COMBINED HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY: Combination HRT increases the risk by about 75%, even when used for a short time to identify individual structures within the breast without the confusion of overlapping tissue images. This is especially important innovation for women with dense breast tissue in which clear imaging is harder to achieve. “Early detection is critical, and 3-D technology allows us to detect smaller and earlier stage cancers. This not only increases breast cancer detection by 25 percent, but decreases false positives or unnecessary callback examinations by 25 to 40 percent,” says Dr. Michael Norton, medical director of breast imaging at Radiological Associates of Sacramento (RAS). “RAS is the first and currently the only breast imaging provider in Sacramento and the Central Valley to offer 3-D mammography.”

PREVENTION: WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T With hundreds of health gurus touting their new miracle cure for cancer, it can be hard to decipher if there’s any truth to their claims. One thing we do know is that a diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables, with fewer meats and processed foods, is better for your overall health. So is frequent exercise and lower alcohol consumption. “It is interesting to note that the higher one’s weight at the time of diagnosis and the lack of physical exercise can increase one’s risk of breast cancer, its recurrence and mortality. So, eating a well-balanced diet, watching your weight (maintaining a normal body mass index), and exercising routinely may help prevent the occurrence of breast cancer,” Dr. Cherry says. As for cancer-fighting foods, while the verdict is still out on their overall efficacy, the argument can be made that consuming healthy options on a regular basis certainly

RESOURCES AND SUPPORT

The battle against breast cancer is one that should never be traveled alone. A pivotal component of treatment is utilizing the resources and support systems in your area. Quincey Roxburgh, RN, clinical director of the Mercy Cancer Institute (MCI), says taking advantage of the programs dedicated to helping patients through treatment Treatment can make a world of difference in their tolerance and overall emotional well-being. “People are beginning to realize the basics of life—rest, relaxation, healthy food Funding and exercise—have a lot to do with their ability to cope during treatment,” Education Roxburgh says. The Institute offers a plethora of programs to meet the needs of cancer patients in all stages of treatment, including breast cancer support group Administration meetings, which are often followed by a free yoga class to help manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. MCI also offers a Gentle Conditioning class, utilizing gentle stretching and lifting light weights, for those in treatment who might not be interested in yoga but are still working to retain their physical Screening stamina and help with side effects like decreased appetite. “More and more, Research research is showing that complementary medicine helps patients through the side effects of their treatment journey. It has been shown to greatly reduce fatigue and *Based on the Susan G Komen Foundation anxiety and improve sleep.” Though these sound like basic components of general Annual Report for 2009-2010 health, they often fall by the wayside while cancer patients are undergoing treatment. Outside of the emotional challenges of battling breast cancer, the coordination and commitments of treatment can be overwhelming. MCI employs a two-pronged approach to patient support—with Nurse Navigators on one side, who help patients manage appointments and coordinate with specialists, and Peer Navigators on the other. MCI

hen is it OK to let Timmy start kindergarten and Susie to swipe on lip gloss? Folsom’s Mosaic Therapy and Wellness team— Britney Stone, MA, LMFT, and Mandi Baughman, MA, ATR, MFTi (both referenced here as “Mosaic”)—shed light on your child’s critical “firsts.”

POTTY TRAINING Expect biological readiness between 18 months to three years old, depending on one’s physical and developmental factors, as well as familial and cultural approaches. Look for an expression of interest and, recommends Mosaic, an “awareness of biological cues and the ability to get to and from the bathroom.” And treat this time as an opportunity to build your child’s confidence. But, add the therapists, “If you find that your child is becoming angry, defiant, withdrawn or showing other concerning behaviors, step back…[he or she] may be feeling too much pressure and frustration, which can backfire. Also, accidents are normal!” Lovingly normalize these occurrences so as not to shame your child.

STARTING KINDERGARTEN Five years old is still considered the norm for entering kindergarten. If unsure about your child’s classroom preparedness, consult with preschool or daycare staff, or mimic a school setting and classroom structure at home to help prepare your little one. “Overall, children in kindergarten should be willing and able to follow instructions, interact with other children, have motor skills to complete classroom activities and possess verbal skills,” explains Mosaic, noting that not all kids accomplish these skills before or during their kindergarten year. “Build socialization and developmental skills through praise, modeling and encouragement.” Conversely, consider waiting if your child displays unsafe or disruptive behaviors, like aggression or excessive tantrumming.

SLEEPOVERS The kindergarten years are not uncommon for a sleepover, but neither is the 8-13 yearsold range; it’s somewhat subjective to one’s comfort level. “Sleeping over should require your child to assertively communicate so they can ask an adult to call home, ask for

help and demonstrate healthy boundaries for safety reasons,” explains Mosaic, stressing the importance of knowing and trusting other parents. “It is crucial to be aware of who will be supervising the children, what activities will be allowed, etc.” And although children will likely exhibit excitement at the prospect of a sleepover, they may get nervous as the big bunking moment approaches. Do your best to normalize anxious feelings while ensuring the supervisory home is safe.

WEARING MAKEUP

GETTING A CELL PHONE

STAYING HOME ALONE

Early-age cell phone use is not uncommon, but Mosaic believes in giving kids regular cell phones, not smartphones, to limit Internet use and delay the inevitable distraction of texting, games and social media. “Children should be able to demonstrate responsibility, trust and safety awareness prior to receiving open access to the outside world via a cell phone,” they say. “[We] recommend parents explain to their children from the start that the child’s cell phone belongs to the parent, as well as any texts, posts, Instagrams, etc. Parents should have full reign to monitor children’s cell phone activities until they show responsibility to manage it alone, which in some cases may be well into their late teen years.”

Maturity, trustworthiness and problem solving skills are solid determinates for brief periods of autonomy. But, notes Mosaic, “We recommend delaying this task as late as possible. Studies show parental supervision is key in safeguarding children and teens from many risk factors and behavioral problems.” Assess your child’s comfort level, consider safety and take in the variables: how long will the child be alone, are they responsible for caring for siblings, is there a trustworthy neighbor next door, etc.

Explore the interest—is it genuine or influenced by an airbrushed photo of their favorite celebrity modeling an unrealistic portrayal of perfection? When your child asks to wear cosmetics, Mosaic suggests taking the opportunity to learn more about your child’s world, including useful tidbits about her self-image and worries. Don’t ask intruding questions, but rather “carefully explore motives.” Then ask yourself if you feel comfortable with the timing and reasoning.

COMPUTERS Mosaic advises parents take the same stance with computers as they do cell phones: “It is the property of the parent. With this understanding from the start, children will be less likely to explore unsafe sites and inappropriate materials.” They do not recommend computers or iPads be left in children’s rooms unsupervised and suggest subscribing to a content monitoring service to prohibit access to inappropriate material.

LEARNING TO DRIVE Discuss risks involved with driving before your teen gets behind the wheel. And because teens are more likely to establish their beliefs about driving from their parents before their first lesson, “Model good driving skills and explain why you keep a distance in front of you and your phone in the trunk,” Mosaic explains. Also, look for a good attitude about driving and safety. “Children who tend to be more impulsive and reckless may need additional time. Watch for an awareness of the fragility of life and the potential impact they make with their decisions on the road.”

NALLIANCE has served adults with developmental disabilities for decades, yet the organization’s presence throughout the greater Sacramento area oftentimes goes unnoticed. “A lot of people aren’t aware of [us] because our participants don’t wear name tags or T-shirts with our name on them,” explains Director of Public Relations Joanna Wilson. “We want [participants] to fit in.” INALLIANCE was founded in 1952 by a group of parents looking for a way to enhance the lives of their children with developmental disabilities. What began as a day 32 stylemg.com - October 2013

program has grown to include Supported Employment and Work and Life Skills programs. Today, INALLIANCE serves more than 400 people throughout eight counties, including El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Sutter. Participants are placed in jobs at local businesses whenever possible, and those who can’t find paid positions donate their time to other local nonprofits. “Our clients…want to contribute to society by working just like everyone else,” says Director of Business Development Jennifer Reuther Casey. “Instead of wasting the human capital of people with disabilities,

we help businesses successfully employ them. Businesses reap all kinds of benefits, from tax credits to retention savings and improved morale.” According to Wilson, the organization’s largest program is Community Training, which provides participants with individualized support as they navigate job sites, college classes and community inclusion activities. “Seeing our participants in our offices really drives home the fact that we are doing great work to help folks who need extra support to live and work the same way you and I do,” she says. Employment Training Specialist Rebekah Scher joined INALLIANCE last year and puts treating clients with “honor and respect” at the top of her list of responsibilities. “We believe that all people are capable of attaining personal greatness and that dreams can be realized,” she says. “Each person was created to live a purposeful and beautiful life. As such, we aim to operate with that in the forefront of our minds.” Joseph Siano works with Scher as a member of the Supported Employment program. He became involved with INALLIANCE in 2005 and says the organization’s mission is to be supportive and keep participants like him at the top of their game. “I really like INALLIANCE. I have jobs that I like to work at. I make money and get to do things that make me happy,” he shares. “I am learning how to speak up for myself.” The newest addition to the INALLIANCE family of programs is comprehensive Elder Care, which offers services like homemaking assistance, paramedical and wellness care, assistive technology support, and legal and financial services. “As we began to look at diversification, senior care fit very well with what we do for people with developmental disabilities,” explains Executive Director Diana DeRodeff. “We like to see people thrive in their own homes, not just exist.” “I have learned so much about the indomitable human spirit; how much beauty can be contained in places most don’t care to look,” adds Scher. “I have seen miraculous transformations when people have simply been allowed to be themselves and fight for their dreams.”

Chicken Apple Sausage Plate

sutter street grill Comfort and Crazy Good Food Collide by Jennifer Resnicke Photgraphy by Dante Fontana

A

s much as I hate mornings, I’m crazy about breakfast foods. There’s something about a greasy spoon that inspires me to roll out of bed and crawl into my favorite spot. There’s also something about being in the cushy dark green booths at Sutter Street Grill— surrounded by dozens of family pictures, kitschy painted plates and charmingly dated floral prints on the wall—that’s reminiscent of Grandmother’s kitchen. 68 stylemg.com - October 2013

On my last visit, I woke up over a steaming mug of Java City coffee (mismatched mugs and cups only add to the folksy feel) while perusing the menu. There’s nearly half a page of omelettes alone, and a lunch menu to boot. I opted for a plate of chicken apple sausage, eggs, country potatoes and the Grill’s famous homemade buttermilk biscuit. To be honest, when the chicken sausage came out I had to double check I didn’t get the wrong dish. Juicy, pink and rich—as op-

posed to the typical variety that’s dry, gray and bland—the chicken sausage was unlike any I’d ever had, and I’ve had quite a few. My husband got one of his standbys: corned beef hash. The first surprise was that it wasn’t shredded, but rather thinly sliced and diced. The second was that the meat wasn’t very highly seasoned, as opposed to some other offerings that taste mostly of spice blends, and it allowed the flavors of the peppers and onions to shine through. That’s a definite plus for those who may feel like it’s normally over-salted and under-flavored. You wouldn’t leave Grandma’s without dessert, and the special was strawberry shortcake. In case you decided against the biscuit at breakfast, you’ve got a second chance: It’s somehow even better with decadent cream and fresh strawberries on top. We spotted a Monte Cristo on the lunch menu, but weren’t quite up for it. Maybe next time we can split the sandwich at one of the patio tables right on the bustling sidewalk in Historic Folsom (just like a few of the happy families we eyed), and enjoy more great food and people watching.

rabbit legs into an oiled plastic bag, and pound to a 1⁄4-in (6-mm) thickness with a mallet. Remove legs from bag. Season with fresh herbs, salt and pepper. Spread pesto evenly across each leg. In a pot fitted with a steamer, steam dandelion greens until slightly wilted but still green. Spread greens over pesto. Roll up tightly and tie with butcher twine. Heat oil in a large cast-iron pan on medium. Brown rabbit on each side, until golden. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing. For the glaze: In a large saucepan, bring sugar and raspberry vinegar to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until reduced by half. Add raspberry preserves and fresh raspberries and let simmer for another 1–2 minutes. Pour over slices of roulade before serving.

JADE MOUNTAIN 2010 CABERNET SAUVIGNON Utilizing multiple appellations and blending them together, Jade Mountain produces wines with great flavor and exceptional quality. The winemaker, Domenica Totty, is very well known and respected in the industry. Growing up in the agricultural town of Sebastopol, CA, she’d watch as nearby apple orchards were gradually replanted to vineyards. Between her 10-plus years of winemaking experience and her work using varietals from all over California, she’s the perfect fit for Jade Mountain. Jade Mountain 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon combines fruit from both Napa and Lake Counties, resulting in aromas that feature classic Napa characteristics (ripe blackberry, dark chocolate, violets and mocha). With a bright entry, the palate picks up red cherry and blueberry tones, punctuated by vanilla and cocoa; firm tannins hold the flavors through the finish. In the $15 range, this wine is a fan favorite—not over the top, but full-bodied enough to serve with hearty food (like this month’s Raspberry-Glazed Rabbit Roulade). —Richard Righton Owner, 36 Handles and Relish Burger Bar

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? We offer medically supervised weight loss, “no pill” cholesterol control, and testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). We found each other. I’ve noticed that opportunities along these lines have only been presented a handful of times in my life, and if I hadn’t been prepared then I wouldn’t have been able to participate, so to speak. In other words, there’s always been some essential element I’ve learned throughout my lifetime that has allowed me to participate in the next opportunity, which has led me to where I am now. It’s like filling in the pieces to a puzzle, gelled into a very clear picture, but there’s always room for another missing piece. What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? Gardening—I learned to work before it gets hot! Why is your staff the best in the business? They enjoy working and caring for people; they know what needs to be done, and they get it done. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Most recently, the understanding of cholesterol and the “no pill” method to reduce it to normal levels. Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? My father—he worked long hours and never complained. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I keep going. What’s your hidden talent? Piloting an airplane. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Subway and Sushi Unlimited. And finally, customer service is…? Actively supporting, understanding and listening to our clients.

Describe your business. Folsom Car Stereo is the premier mobile electronics destination in Folsom. We specialize in autos, boats, RVs and motorcycles—everything from simple radio swaps with Bluetooth integration to the most extravagant and exotic installations one has ever seen. We have experience with Mercedes, Porsche, Ferrari, BMW and many others makes. Why is your staff the best in the business? Folsom Car Stereo is owner-operated with more than 25 years of professional experience in the mobile electronics industry. What’s your hidden talent?
My hidden talent would be my creativity and ingenuity with fiberglass. No job is too small or too big, and anything can be built as long as you can visualize the finished product in your mind. What’s your biggest job perk?
My biggest job perk is seeing the excitement and expressions on my clients’ faces when they pick up their vehicles. I like to hear that amazing quote: “You have a customer for life!” What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? It’s hard to pick just one favorite eatery in Folsom; however, I usually frequent Manderes, Visconti’s Ristorante, Sutter Street Steakhouse, and Land Ocean. What’s your favorite local event that you go to? My favorite local event is Folsom LIVE, on Sutter Street in Historic Folsom. It’s a great way to meet other local clients in the area. What’s your favorite local business other than your own?
My favorite local business is the Folsom Car Care Center on Blue Ravine Road—they’re very professional and experienced. And finally, customer service is…?
When past clients stop in just to say “Hi,” and bring a friend with them.

THE ART OF FORGIVENESS El Dorado Hills 530-363-5882 facebook.com/theartofforgiveness

Describe your Business. Did you find it, or did it find you? QT Optometry is patient-centered. We work to provide the best quality, comprehensive exams, as well as consultation and service with a smile. My private practice was opened in my hometown, with the intent to promote the education and awareness of eye health and care to my patients and the Folsom community. It was actually something I had been planning for a while, and after working through all of the pre-necessities of a business start-up, we’re finally open! How are you involved with both the community and your customers? I’m an active Folsom Chamber of Commerce member; also, we’re highly engaged with patients/customers throughout social media platforms (Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn). What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Earning my doctorate of optometry and opening my own practice. Where do you go when the going gets tough? The typical male fallback: video games. What’s your biggest job perk? The ability to help people see the sharper images of life. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Johnny Rockets and Thai Paradise. And finally, customer services is...? The embodiment of our mission statement: “You are the most important patient at our practice. You are not dependent on us, however, we are dependent on you. You are not an interruption to our work, rather, you are the purpose of it. You are not an outsider to our practice, more importantly, you are part of it. We are not doing you a favor by caring for you, respectfully, you are doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to do so.”

Do you know that our editorial is not paid for, nor can it be purchased? In fact, our Introducing and Dine reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? The ART of Forgiveness, certified life coach for women, believes in starting with forgiveness first. Once we remove this barrier, we can begin to heal in all other areas of our lives. It’s something that has always been in my heart. I incorporate creative self-expression into the healing process of forgiveness. We all have someone or something to forgive, including ourselves—from childhood and divorce to grief and more. Forgiveness is taking your power back and redirecting it into something positive. Forgiveness changes everything and is the ultimate act of self-love. I offer one free session. What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? I worked at a childcare facility for preschoolers and learned that children truly know the key to life: to be free, full of energy and experience joy all the time! Where do you go when the going gets tough? Straight to my pastels—it’s the best outlet. If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why? Helen Keller—she always thought outside of her conditions. Instead of focusing on limitations, she used her willingness to propel herself forward and in doing so, she accomplished so much. She’s a beautiful demonstration of believing in yourself, regardless of life’s conditions. Each morning I read Helen Keller’s pledge: “I am only one but still I am one. I cannot do everything but still I can do something. Because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something I can do. Everything begins with a single effort.” What’s your favorite local event that you go to? All of the events and concerts at the El Dorado Hills Town Center—it’s great family entertainment and is very close to home. We love going to the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary as well.

forget me not Alzheimer’s Hits Home by Tom Mailey

M

82 stylemg.com - October 2013

But still, we were concerned. We wanted to move her to an assisted care facility, but she was still fiercely independent. “I’m a tough old bird,” she reminded us frequently. The one time she actually agreed, she lasted one night. My sister got a call the next morning from the facility supervisor: Mom had called a moving company. We realized that for as long as possible, her home was the best place. It was familiar. She was alone, but she was happy. After the funeral, we cleaned out her room. Much of the stuff we’d seen before, but we were surprised to discover something else. Mom had a lifelong love of writing, but we thought she gave it up when macular degeneration made it too difficult for her to see. However, in a relatively new spiral notebook, we found poems. Not many, but enough to tell us that in her solitude, another light still burned brightly. “She scrubbed She cooked She laundered She raised four children... She laundered everything She went to church, and so did her family She loved good music She loved good comedy She loved to swim She was lucky And unlucky She was happy She knew sadness

She would’ve liked to attend college So many years So many smiles Friendships —And a few non-friendships (Hey, isn’t that what life is all about?) And hoping Most of all That whoever reads this Will remember that I tried in so many ways to care for my family”

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s is not easy, but in the coming decades, it looms. The World Health Organization calls Alzheimer’s a “public health priority,” with U.S. cost projections as high as $215 billion annually—more than heart disease or cancer, combined. October is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. If you have a loved one facing it, you’re facing it too. Resources are available. Find out more at alz.org/norcal. In the meantime, stay focused on those lights that still burn brightly. They cast warmth that can help to see you through.

y mom would have turned 89 this year. When Patricia Mailey (maiden name, Powell) was born, cars came with hand cranks. She saw a lot: the depression, a world war, and the rise of Justin Bieber. A few years back she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but as she struggled to remember what year it was or forgot to take her medication, some things remained constant, like her sharp sense of humor. I called her one Saturday morning last year: “Hi mom!” I said “Who is this?” She asked. I wasn’t surprised by her question, given that she mixed up my brother and me on the phone long before Alzheimer’s. I clarified: “It’s Tom!” “Oh,” she said, pausing for one perfect moment. “You still think I’m your mother, don’t you?” and then she burst into a laugh that to me always sounded like water bounding over stones. My mom passed away in May, not from Alzheimer’s but an aneurysm. The doctor said it happened very quickly, for which my family was thankful. In a way, we were thankful too that it likely spared her from further fading into Alzheimer’s hazy abyss, for which there is no cure and little treatment. It’s a strange thing, Alzheimer’s. Imagine the brain like a string of lights that suddenly begin flickering. Some bulbs go out for good. Others keep burning. Some seem to burn out, but then come back on, only to dim again. There’s no pattern and little predictability. Some of my mom’s lights burned bright as ever, like that sense of humor and her long-term memory. But others—shortterm memory, simple reasoning—were either out completely or flickered randomly. As time went on, more lights blinked out and never came back on. Dad died in 2006 and Mom lived alone. She was well looked after by my sister and niece, who lived near her. Another sister, my brother and I visited as often as we could.
