D

o you remember the m ov i e D a z e d a n d Confused? Maybe I shouldn’t admit this, but I love that flick. As a teen, my summer breaks played out similarly (not exactly!) to the plot of this “coming of age” comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Jason London, among other now-über-famous folks.

But instead of just one day, like in the movie, my reel kept playing until just before reality beckoned me back, back to school that is. Warm summer nights spent out and about, cruising the small-town streets of Nixa, MO, with my closest girlfriends, heading to bonfires and backyard parties—life seemed sublime.

My summers today are surprisingly similar, with these exceptions: I still have to go to work every weekday; I have a child and fiancé; I don’t own any high-waisted pants; and I don’t have a bong. I’m sure there are a few more variances, but you get the point. What remains the same nowadays is my affinity for frolicking with friends outdoors at summer concerts, backyard barbecues and camping getaways. I have not lost my inner-teen; rather, I now embrace her spontaneity by balancing her out with my 30-something wisdom.

Welcome back your inner-teen this summer, and pretend, even if for just a moment, that you are 16 again. Whatever your pleasure—grooving to music at local summer concerts, chowing down on funnel cakes at one of the multiple county fairs, or exploring new campgrounds—you’ll find it easy to be young at heart with Style’s annual Summer Fun Guide, this year with “75+ cool ways to take a break,” along with cocktail recipes and great local bars with patios to boot.

If you’d like your teen (or tween) to avoid a summer setup like that of the aforementioned movie, now’s a good time to add some balance to their summerlong soirée by introducing them to the benefits of philanthropy. Q: How young is too young to start teaching a child how to play an instrument?

Learning music, like learning a language, begins with listening. Infants, even those in utero, respond to rhythmic melody, so parents wanting children to enjoy the well-studied benefits of musical training are wise to begin with listening. Kindermusic programs are great, too. Pediatricians advise that toddlers are ready for music study at the age of three. Piano is easiest for younger children, as violin and stringed instruments require more dexterity (five is a better age for those). Most music teachers suggest waiting until a child is seven or eight years old to learn wind instruments. With that said, 13-year-old YouTube flute prodigy Emma Resmini begged her parents for a flute at the age of three!

A: It’s important that you take time to educate yourself about the surgery so you’re aware of what to expect. Try to attend all doctor visits and ask questions. Many times your loved one doesn’t know what questions to ask, or if they do ask questions, they may not remember the answers. It’s also helpful to be as involved as possible. One of the biggest problems faced during recovery is patient depression, so it’s vital that you encourage and motivate in a positive manner—urging them to move about and do as much as they can for themselves, while keeping in mind the limitations set forth by the doctor. Also, keep in mind that you may need assistance in helping your loved one, especially if you’re working and caring for a family of your own.

Don’t be afraid to seek help! It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s just facing reality. Your health during this stressful time must be a primary concern. After all, if your health is compromised, you can’t help your loved one recover. There are agencies that can provide assistance and give you a break.

olsom resident Sharon Williams is affectionately known as the “MuttonBustin’ Mama” to her friends at the Folsom Pro Rodeo (folsomrodeo.com), set to take place July 3-5. Every summer, the Folsom Chamber of Commerce brings the rodeo to town, and Williams is responsible for the mutton busting event, where children ages 5-6 get a chance to ride—or try to hold on to—a full-grown sheep. Williams’ husband, Jim (“Digger”), has volunteered since the rodeo’s first year, back in 1960. In fact, after the couple moved to Folsom more than 54 years ago, they became so involved in the community that many of their friends started calling them “Mr. and Mrs. Folsom.”

Center manager, started working for the organization over two decades ago, and she is passionate about their mission to foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for Folsom residents. “I have a service heart,” she explains. “I like doing things for people.” But life hasn’t always been so giving for Williams. In 2010, her husband suffered a near-fatal heart attack due to complications from type-I diabetes, and he continues to struggle with severe health issues. Despite this setback, Williams remains optimistic about the future. “None of us know if we’re going to have tomorrow,” she shares. “You have to make the best use of the time you have.”

Folsom Parks and Recreation offers a huge variety of summer day camps for kids and teens. Camps begin this month and continue through August, and times vary—from morning or afternoon sessions to all-day camps with extended care for mornings and evenings.

the10 spot Summer Reads

Vacation Zone (ages 5-10) offers week-long, all-day sessions that include fun activities like outdoor games, arts and crafts, field trips and swimming. Campers are divided into separate groups for ages 5-7 and 8-10.

Folsom Zoo Sanctuary camps have sessions for ages 4-7, 8-11 and 12-15. Little ones learn about animals through songs, crafts and stories—plus they get to meet some of the Zoo’s outreach animals. Older kids learn what it’s like to be a zookeeper with hands-on activities like preparing meals, helping to clean exhibits and more. Also included are animal handling, grooming and training demonstrations.

Sports Camps offer kids numerous options to keep their summer on the move with tennis, soccer, baseball, basketball, fencing, flag football, taekwondo, volleyball and more.

Play Well Technologies Camps offers LEGO fans (ages 5-12) activities that focus on robotics, engineering, architecture and alternative energy.

Academy Camp and Aquatic Adventure Camp are two options for kids ages 8-12 who love to swim and play outdoors. Camps continue weekly throughout the summer with all-day and afternoon sessions available.

Mad Science Camps offer age-appropriate, hands-on activities to educate kids (ages 4-12) about dinosaurs, robotics, inventions, ecology, chemistry, space and more.

Java Mama Café

lose your eyes and imagine it’s early morning—the kids are getting on your last nerve and a friend calls to invite you out for coffee. She wants to meet in 10 minutes, which means no time to get a sitter or drop the little ones off, but you’re not worried. Why? Because you’re all headed to Java Mama Café, a sanctuary where adults sip on their lattes, nibble pastries and catch up with friends, while staff members supervise the children (for up to two hours!). Although I don’t have kids of my own, I had to check out this innovative concept.

The atmosphere is a happy one—the sounds of kids playing and women laughing are heard immediately upon entering. When I got to the counter, the owner, Rachel, sweetly explained the way Java Mama operates. They even have a private room for moms who are nursing.

I ordered a Chai Tea Latte and a Cronut (for the first time!). I was definitely not disappointed. The latte was wonderfully cinnamon-y and smooth, while the cronut—think of a donut marrying a croissant—was flaky, sweet and oh-so addicting. So, if you’ve ever complained while riding/ walking the trail that “it’s too far,” just know that it could have been worse!

ommissioning artwork may sound like quite an effort, but it can actually be a simple and rewarding endeavor when done with an artist like Lisa Deniz, who has been creating works full-time since 2000 and has always worked with clients to create a piece that is harmonious with their unique personality. She recently created a piece entitled Angel Tree for an Empire Ranch family. “She’s so incredibly intuitive and that totally comes through in the end product. She completely captured ‘me’ in the piece,” says homeowner Angel Mercier. Together, the homeowners and Deniz worked out a budget, and after spending a little time with the family Deniz started Angel Tree. “The conceptual framework for this piece came from getting to know the clients and wanting to create something that speaks to them...that is where the real collaboration took place,” explains Deniz. The project spanned five months—from first consultation to final installation—and used multiple mediums including sculpted metal and glass, textured fabrics and acrylic paintings. nspired by the beauty of the surrounding Sierra foothills, oil and watercolor artist Sherry Reynolds-Blackard specializes in landscapes and has been teaching art to children and adults for over 30 years.

She currently instructs through the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department.

AB: Have you always been a painter? What led you to life as an artist?

SB: My grandmother, Jane Wilson Reynolds, taught me to paint with oils when I was 13 years old. She was a self-taught artist and had plenty of time to paint while living for 35 years with her husband, Paul (Speed) Reynolds, on a mountaintop mining community 10 miles from Park City. Her walls had full-length panel murals of the clouds and mountains surrounding the area; vases, lampshades and the outside cabana and birdcage were all adorned with landscapes too, so it’s no surprise I have a love for nature.

AB: Have you ever left a painting unfinished?

SB: I have many paintings yet to be completed. They go in the closet and wait. A couple of years ago, I made an attempt to bring them all to a finish; my goal was to finish 40, but only managed 25. To finish and frame is quite a task, especially when raising a family.

AB: Is there a piece of work you’re most proud of?

SB: I suppose it would be The River or Sonoma Day. I’m proud of them because they catch my eye and I love looking at them. Not to mention, when others look at them they feel the same way, which is encouraging.

AB: You work with both watercolors and oils. What are your favorite aspects of painting with each of these mediums? Do you prefer one over the other?

SB: I enjoy both for different reasons. Watercolor is fast, for a quick capture of a composition, color layout, etc., or just a memory while Sonoma Day on vacation. Oils are my favorite for a wall hanging because their colors are more vibrant and will endure time; they also seem to become deeper and richer with time—underlying colors seep through and enhance the final product!

AB: You teach painting classes and workshops. What is the most important lesson you can pass along to a student?

SB: Follow your love of painting! Look at yourself as a new flower, never seen before. There are methods and techniques to learn; look for the ones you like, choose the place to do it that feels motivating. Find a way to relax when you paint, or meditate before you do. Tell yourself you’re wonderful for following what you really want to do, thank the universe (or whomever you talk to) for being given this opportunity, and have fun!

AB: What advice would you give to young artists?

SB: Paint from your heart, do what you love and follow your dreams. “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars!” And, enjoy the journey, because that’s what it’s all about!

Q: I recently started attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and couple’s counseling at my partner’s insistence. She’s constantly checking up on me and questioning my motives and decisions. I’ve done everything she’s asked, but nothing I do seems to be enough. How can I prove to her that I’m serious about our marriage and my recovery?

Bob: Your partner is acting out her codependent traits by attempting to manage your recovery. By trying to “prove to her” that you’re

ew unhealthy relationship dynamics are more common or have as many facets as codependency. The term, defined as an unhealthy dependence on or control of others, may be over-generalized and a bit vague; however, it encompasses a spectrum on which we all—in one way or another—can be placed. The questions below look at common yet often unrecognized forms of codependency.

To break the codependent patterns, you both need to focus on taking responsibility for your own behaviors, rather than each other’s.

Q: I’ll be out of town for two weeks and,

Bob: People who have difficulty saying “no” can’t truly say “yes.” A sure sign that there’s a problem is when you plan to say “no,” but end up buckling when the time comes. When people agree to something they don’t want to do—purely out of obligation—they often feel frustrated, overwhelmed and resentful. Low self-esteem and the need for approval are often lurking behind such poor boundaries.

Start saying “no” to little requests that aren’t as difficult to refuse. For more difficult requests, buy some time before giving an answer; this will help you stop replying automatically with a “yes” before having the chance to thoughtfully consider the request and its impact.

When people agree to something they don’t want to do—purely out of obligation— they often feel frustrated, overwhelmed and resentful.

She tends to be pretty shy around groups of people, so I usually take care of our social calendar. Should I call her sister and ask her to tag along, or should I come home early?

Bob: While it’s likely your partner suffers from social anxiety, changing your schedule to protect her from feeling discomfort enables her to continue letting fear control her. If you’re unsure how to offer support, a good rule of thumb is to be empathetic—but allow her the space to take ownership and responsibility for her schedule.

by Morgan Cásarez Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has distributed 36 million gun safety kits (each of which includes a cable-style gunlock, installment instructions and gun safety information) through Project ChildSafe in 50 states and five U.S. territories. Last year alone, the NSSF pledged to make half a million kits available to its community partners, and Romanelli says the demand for kits is outpacing supply nearly four to one.

“I’ve seen letters from parents who’ve put Project ChildSafe locks on their firearms and have stories about how it prevented a horrible accident,” Romanelli shares. “I’ve also talked to people who’ve lost children and family members because a firearm wasn’t stored responsibly. The pain and heartbreak they’ve endured is unimaginable.” Browning adds: “There’s nothing more tragic than the senseless loss of a child...Project ChildSafe makes it so no one has any excuse for not rendering firearms they keep in their home safe and their children out of harm’s way.”

Although Project ChildSafe received $90 million dollars in federal funding over the course of five years, the organization has relied on donations from the firearms industry to accomplish its goals since 2008. “I hope to see even more law enforcement agencies come on board, and I’d like to one day report that Project ChildSafe has distributed more than 50 million free firearm safety kits,” Romanelli says. “I’d like to see Congress restore funding for this program. Every $2 puts another safety kit in someone’s hands.”

hen Sergeant Jason Browning of the Folsom Police Department thinks about children and the role of gun safety in their lives, the words of a Founding Father are never far from his mind. “Benjamin Franklin said, ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,’ and truer words were never spoken,” he shares. “You can’t undo a tragedy, so please exercise good judgment and prevent [one] from ever occurring.”

For more than a decade, the Folsom Police Department has provided free gun safety kits through its partnership with Project ChildSafe, a nationwide educational nonprofit that promotes the safe handling of firearms. In addition to endorsements from law enforcement agencies like the El Dorado County Sherriff’s Department, Project ChildSafe receives support from more than a dozen organizations, including the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers, the California Rifle and Pistol Association, and the Nevada Firearms Coalition.

“I’ve been unfortunate enough to have witnessed the impact of improperly stored or secured firearms,” Browning explains.

“Weapon ownership comes with a great responsibility, and even the most innocent of mistakes can have tragic and permanent consequences.”

On July 19, the theme focuses on War in California in 1846, when Mexican California was in a constant state of political unrest and threats from foreign powers were a constant menace—a time when as many as five flags may have had a turn flying over Sutter’s Fort. During this event, enjoy a historical scavenger hunt, black powder weapon demonstrations and more. On August 16, get your gold diggin’ on. Mining the Miners: Sutter’s Fort and the Gold Rush will tell the story of the search for gold in 1849, which precipitated the largest, unforced migration in the history of humanity. People from everywhere descended to the ungoverned land of California and headed straight to Sutter’s Fort before starting their quest to get rich quick.

But for John Sutter, the Gold Rush destroyed his empire. At this event, learn who did get rich off the Gold Rush as well as why some folks succeeded when others failed. Esplanade Mint Julep

(Excerpted from Taste of Tremé) Serves 1 • 4 sprigs fresh mint • Crushed ice • 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 oz. bourbon • 1 tbsp. water In a tall Collins glass, muddle the mint with the sugar. Add the water and stir until the sugar dissolves. Fill the glass to the top with crushed ice.

Add the bourbon to the top of the glass.

Ginger-Orange Margarita

Serves 4 • 1 can (12-oz.) frozen orange juice concentrate, 1 tbsp. reserved • 10 oz. tequila • 6 oz. ginger liqueur • 1 tsp. grated ginger • 4 cups ice • 2 tbsp. kosher or margarita salt Combine frozen orange juice concentrate (minus 1 tablespoon), tequila, ginger liqueur, ginger and ice in a blender and mix until ice is crushed. Place saved tablespoon of orange concentrate on a small plate and salt on another plate.

Dip rims of 4 glasses in concentrate and then in salt.

Pour, serve and enjoy!

Fishing offers trout, catfish, big and small bass or perch. U is for U-Pick Farms

Yes, summer means a different local farmers’ market each day of the week, but why not skip it once in a while and head to a farm to pick your own fresh produce?

Before you venture to one of these local farms, put an ice chest in your car to keep your fruits and veggies fresh on the drive home. For safety, be sure to wear sneakers with good soles, sunscreen and other protective layers, and don’t wear perfume or other scented products that might attract bees. It may feel strange at first, but soon you’ll be so entranced by the incredible flavors that you won’t care.

A

s my husband and I pulled open the door to Peacock Indian Restaurant and stepped into the modern space with warm tan walls and maroon booths, the exotic aroma of curry swirled through our minds—preparing us for the delectable meal we were about to enjoy.

A few flat-screen TVs were tuned to vibrant Bollywood music videos that we couldn’t help but watch (more intently than seems proper when sitting down for dinner). Turning to our menus, I must admit I was a little intimidated by all of the unfamiliar words. I’m not sure if our server was clairvoyant or just really astute, but he somehow preempted our attempts to bumble through the pronunciations as we placed our orders.

First up came an appetizer of punugulu: ground lentil-and-ricespiced dumplings that were satisfyingly starchy, delightfully soft in the middle, and crispy on the outside. They came with two chutneys, which, if you’re unfamiliar, are essentially dipping sauces. One was a spicy, enticing mix bursting with flavors of 56 stylemg.com - June 2014

curry and cumin, and the other a blend of creamy and cooling coconut.

Though there was a long list of both vegetarian and meat-laden curries, I opted for the house special: biryani with heavily seasoned (in a good way), tender chicken. The long-grain basmati rice dish with saffron came with a silky hard-boiled egg, raw red onion slices and two incredible sauces; the one with cucumber and cilantro was a refreshing detour from the spicy offerings.

My spouse ordered the masala dosa, a South Indian crepe delicacy stuffed with seasoned mashed potatoes. What the menu doesn’t mention is the crepe is colossal—it literally didn’t fit on the plate. A word to the wise: Dig in with your hands, tear off chunks of the chewy and crispy crepe and sweep it through either the spicy or mild sauces. It may feel strange at first, but soon you’ll be so entranced by the incredible flavors Punugulu that you won’t care.

If you still have room for dessert, the double ka meetna—a gooey, syrupy, cinnamon-redolent treat that’s reminiscent of bread pudding—definitely makes the musttry list. In fact, Peacock also made our restaurants-we-must-try-again list.

As the name suggests, Brussels sprouts hail from Belgium, where these tender buds have been cultivated for centuries.

But sadly, they’re nowhere near as popular as their culinary compatriot: Belgian waffles.

I get it: Most people prefer syrup-drenched breakfast cakes to vegetables.

Obviously, they haven’t yet tried roasted Brussels sprouts tossed in sharp mustard vinaigrette and topped with prosciutto chips and sieved egg. This hearty Italian side will convert even the staunchest sprouts hater.

Personally, I can’t get enough of ‘cavolini al forno’ (sprouts in the oven)—I often add extra ‘porkitos’ and eggs so I can enjoy an entréesized portion of this dish.

Mustard Vinaigrette • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tsp. aged balsamic vinegar • 2 tsp. Dijon-style mustard • 2 tsp. minced shallot • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper Brussels Sprouts • 2 lbs. Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved • 3 tbsp. melted ghee • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 4 porkitos, crumbled (crispy prosciutto chips; for recipe, visit stylemg.com) • 2 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and pushed through a sieve 1. If you haven’t made a batch of porkitos yet, hop to it—especially if you’ve only got one oven.

2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees with the rack in the middle position. Then, combine all vinaigrette ingredients in a jar. Seal tightly and shake well.

Arrange the sprouts in a single layer on a foil-lined baking sheet and roast for 35 minutes or until browned on the outside and tender on the inside, rotating the tray and flipping the sprouts at the midpoint. (If you don’t have hard-boiled eggs handy, now’s the perfect time to make some.)

4. Toss the Brussels sprouts with the vinaigrette in a large bowl. Plate the sprouts, add a sprinkle of crumbled porkitos and garnish with the sieved eggs. Taste and adjust for seasoning; serve immediately. Serves 6.

Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ is a filtered American pale wheat ale with 7.5-percent alcohol by volume (ABV) that packs a punch of hops, along with refreshing notes of grapefruit and pine. Fans of IPAs and wheat beers will approve both of the beer’s silky body and strong finish—especially when paired with this month’s recipe of Cavolini Al Forno.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist, I provide therapy to individuals, couples and families. Although I work with people on a wide range of issues—including depression, anxiety and grief/loss—I primarily focus on helping people improve their relationships.

I’m excited about the addition of intern Jennifer Hagar to my practice. As a pre-licensed therapist, she sees clients under my supervision, which gives us more options for helping people.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

For more than 13 years I’ve been in private practice in this community, and since I live here too, I feel very connected to the region. This is where my family lives, works and plays!

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

To my husband, family, friends and the gym! I feel blessed to have such a wonderful support system. This is something my clients don’t always have so I provide it for them, while helping them to build their coping skills and support network. I’m also a big proponent of exercise. I work out as much for my mental health as my physical health.

What’s your biggest job perk?

My job offers me many wonderful things including flexibility, which allows me to work at my practice part-time while also raising my two children. Working part-time keeps me fresh and focused on my clients while I’m there. Another perk is the feedback I get from clients about how our work has changed their life in some way. I remember a father telling me once that I gave him back his daughter. Talk about rewarding!

Where do you and your family go locally to have fun?

We love Folsom Lake, eating out at local restaurants and going to the movies; as well, we enjoy the El Dorado Hills Community Service District’s Summer Concerts in the Park.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

As a mom, I only wanted the absolute best for my kids so I searched high and low for a perfect educational and loving atmosphere, before deciding to take matters into my own hands. A quality preschool education is crucial for each child’s stage of development. We began our preschool in 2004 in Rancho Cordova and relocated to Folsom in late 2013.

Folsom Kids Academy is an in-home preschool designed to foster children between the ages of 2-5. We offer a 6:1 ratio and deliver a HighScope Curriculum daily—considering appropriateness for each child.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

We are partnered with the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Placer County and specifically Hope 4 Women, where we assist in collecting dress donations. We serve our community on a daily basis; each day, I read a book to a future astronaut, sing the alphabet to a future Supreme Court Justice and introduce the color red to a future attorney.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

Our staff comprises fully trained and certified educators, and we only hire those with nurturing hearts.

What’s your biggest job perk?

Making a positive impact on another’s life.

So I’ll hear parts of words but not others, and it happens so quickly that my subconscious—and this was explained to me by an audiologist— reflexively tries to fill in those gaps by instantly offering up what it thought was said. The result is a real-life version of those Internet “Bad Lip Reading” videos.

This is where it’s at least a tiny bit entertaining—some of the misinterpretations can be really goofy. In fact, I started keeping track, writing down some of the weirder ones, along with what was actually said. Here’s a glimpse into my world.

Said: How far do we have to go?

Heard: Bow to your burrito.

Said: Did you get the dogs some food?

Heard: Did you get a dollar a whip stick?

Said: Did she have another baby?

Heard: Missouri NFL baby?

More than 20 million Americans have some kind of hearing loss, and that number is growing as the population ages. If you think you might be one, get it checked. Most minor hearing loss can be helped. I keep my fingers crossed that technology will eventually catch up with the kind of loss I have. In the meantime, if I ask you to repeat yourself, please be patient. It’s not that I wasn’t paying attention—I just know there’s no way you made a comment about a “rich kingdom of puppy hills.” And I’d really like to know what you actually have to say.

hose, unfortunately, have become standard phrases in my vocabulary. It’s taken me a long time to admit it: I’m hard of hearing, and not just a little.

My low-end hearing is shot, meaning I have a tough time with speaking voices, especially if I’m not looking right at the person who’s speaking to me. I’ve been told by hearing specialists that despite the fact my radio career requires me to wear headphones and attend loud concerts regularly, my particular kind of hearing loss has little to do with listening to loud noises and instead is probably genetic, which makes sense, since my mother had horrible hearing—despite never once attending a Keith Urban concert.

I’ve tried hearing aids but so far haven’t had much success—they just seem to amplify everything in the room so that I not only hear what you’re saying to me, but also every other conversation, along with the squeak of some guy’s shoe and the buzzing of a fly in the far corner. For now, I’ve resigned myself to the high probability that this is something I’m going to have to live with. Unfortunately, the same is true for my family and my colleagues—all of whom have occasionally expressed frustration when I ask them to repeat themselves because either I couldn’t make out what they said at all, or, more commonly, I misinterpret it.
