editor’snote

T

his was how my night began—a somber yet optimistic Facebook post, which read: “I still write the old-fashioned way…with paper and pencil. It’s tough getting the words to flow tonight. I sit here now trying to contain my swirling thoughts in order to craft my final note to Style Magazine readers. Tear drop. It’s been nearly a decade and seems like just moments ago when I began this journey. It’s been fast, furious and fabulous.” I am leaving my post with a feeling of awe at the strong s e n s e of co m m u n it y th a t abounds and the plentiful passion for a full life that both our region and residents exude graciously. I also leave with a rich knowledge of all that surrounds me, and great gratitude for sharing your stories. Considering our mantra, “We can always improve upon the existing,” my tenure has bore witness to substantial growth in every way imaginable—what we cover, how we cover it, and the way we present it to you. The process reflects a development much like that of the maturation of a child to a successful adult, and we—the Style staff—have even referred to our magazine as “our baby.” There is, and will continue to be, “Farewell: great care that contributes to this beautiful, thoughtful a wish of piece of resourceful work that comes to life each month. well-being Each month better than the previous, we hope you think anyway. at parting; I would be remiss not to give thanks where much is good-bye.”— due. I first thank everyone on our team, because like any Merriamgood machine, when one part is missing, everything Webster stops. Secondly, I applaud Megan Wiskus for her undying devotion and diligence each and every day to the betterment of Style. I literally could not have done my job without her. Next, the design team: Gary Zsigo, Aaron Roseli and David Norby, as well as staff photographer Dante Fontana—I thank them profusely for putting up with my annoying idiosyncrasies, which I know for a fact caused a number of deserved eyerolls. I proudly acknowledge Debra Linn for her great job as a mother hen who always noticed and consoled my need for attention. Then there’s Joanne Kilmartin, who started about a year before I, and is certainly the best teller of jokes I know. I would put her in my pocket and take her with me if I could. Last but for sure not least, Terry Carroll and Wendy Sipple (aka the powers that be) have supported and guided me though thick and thin, and I would not be where I am today without their presence in my life. We truly are a family here at Style, which is probably why we relate to yours so well. Enter Boyz II Men lyric: “It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.” Yet, tomorrow is a new day, and I can’t wait to see all that Style has in store for you. I bid you farewell, — Desiree

What TV series are you most looking forward to watching this fall?

NCIS! —Cathy

NOT YOUR AVERAGE TAKE-OUT.

Modern Family—the show is so well cast, so well written and so well directed. It’s funny, it’s smart and always fulfilling! —Wendy Blue Bloods is quite possibly the best show on TV…and the drama always seems to get resolved by the end of the show. I love the family dinners—makes me want to be a Reagan every Friday night.

asktheexperts Q: Are chemical peels a permanent solution to removing acne scars?

A: Acne scars can be improved su rgic a lly a n d n o n -su rgic a lly through dermabrasion, laser and chemical peels. A chemical peel is used to remove the outermost layer of skin where most of the acne scar tissue lies. As the skin heals, it will bring in new skin, thus improving its appearance. There are a variety of chemicals that can be used, depending on the depth and aggressiveness needed. You will need to have an expert examine the skin and determine the best course of action. —Kenneth Sumida, MD Nuance Cosmetic Surgery 1641 Creekside Drive, Suite 100, Folsom 916-517-0230, nuancecs.com

I’m hosting an event for 60-70 people and am not sure if anyone has dietary restrictions. What are the best dishes to serve to accommodate all of my guests?

BOTOX® JUVEDERM® ULTRA XC & VOLUMA XC RADIESSE® / SCULPTRA® / PERLANE® / BELOTERO® COOLSCULPTING® (NON-SURGICAL FAT REDUCTION) LASER HAIR REMOVAL

A: When accommodating dietary restrictions, it’s always important to ask about serious food allergies—not just dietary preferences when planning your menu. A permitted professional, full-service caterer should be more than happy to accommodate special diets for guests and family. What’s more, there are very real liabilities involved should something awful occur, so make sure you’re prepared with the proper insurances. In other words, be ready for the worst-case scenario—plan ahead, ask on your invitations and RSVPs about serious food allergies, accommodate them, and make sure your caterer is in the loop fully…and fully insured. —Andy Tannehill, Director of Operations Table Nectar & Organic Catering 6642 Merchandise Way, Suite 500, Diamond Springs 530-344-7613, tablenectar.com September 2016 - stylefedh.com 13

He originally entered college thinking he might pursue one in medicine, but soon gravitated toward the more “big picture” approach made possible by administrative roles. Although he’s always been passionate about patient care, his father’s recent diagnosis with degenerative Parkinson’s disease has made him even more aware of the enormous impact health care providers can have on patients’ lives. “Being on the other side, with a family member as a patient, puts into perspective what I do every day,” says Castañeda. Meet Kinkajous Quinn and Bindi

R

elated to raccoons, kinkajous are native to Central and South America. The small, nocturnal rainforest tree dwellers snack on fruit, flowers and insects. They’re also quite vocal and can be heard screeching and “barking” with members of their group. Multipurpose prehensile tails aid in t re e to p b a l a n ce, a n d Quinn when wrapped around them, keep these little animals warm. Kinkajous have big eyes, small ears, golden fur and five toes on every foot; they use their long tongues for licking up tasty treats, like honey from bee’s nests. Chicago’s Pizza With A Twist

ver thought of fusing your favorite cheesy-meets-saucy guilty pleasure with the rich, spicy tang of the Indian subcontinent? Well, Chicago’s Pizza With A Twist has successfully done so (hence, the twist), and the results are truly mouthwatering. With a menu full of unique pizzas, such as Tikka Masala Veggie and Tandoor Paneer, and classics like Hawaiian and Combination, the eatery’s palatable selections are as diverse as each offering’s flavors. Coming from Indian roots myself, I was hungry to try the Butter Chicken Pizza, as the mildly spiced chicken sautéed in flavorsome creamy curry is one of my most-loved dishes. Zesty aromas wafted up to my nose before I even saw the waiter approach to deliver the colorful concoction. The butter chicken—sitting atop a fluffy, crisp crust—was accompanied by a velvety butter sauce as a base and sprinkled liberally with melty cheese, red onions, chopped garlic, sharp ginger, fresh cilantro and a dusting of green chili. My expectations were exceeded from the first bite and confirmed on my second return, as the bold harmony of exotic seasonings sung delightfully to the satisfaction of my taste buds. CATCH ALL

The Folsom Community Center will host Style Magazine’s 11th annual Folsom Family Expo on October 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Since 2005, families from around the region—approximately 4,000 attendees—have enjoyed this free afternoon featuring bounce houses, prize giveaways, open admission to the Folsom Zoo, performances and vendor booths—all made possible by the event’s partnerships. “We’ve collaborated with amazing sponsors who have allowed us to continue to offer free admission [both to the event and the Folsom Zoo],” says Style Magazine Marketing and Events Manager Siobhán Russell Pritt. While admission is free, portions of other proceeds benefit special causes Style Magazine supports. Along with fund-raising, the expo serves to connect local businesses with local families. “Folsom Family Expo was created as a way to bring local businesses together with the community and to celebrate families,” says Russell Pritt. “It’s such a fun event; I always meet so many great people year after year,” she says. For more details, visit facebook.com/ folsomfamilyexpo. •

T

he third annual Folsom Community Service Day on September 17 beckons volunteers of all ages to lend their time and participate in over 10 different community projects that benefit all parts of the Folsom community, including library book cleaning, lake cleanup, school beautification and more. The City of Folsom pairs with local corporations, businesses and nonprofits to organize Folsom’s largest day of volunteerism, but it’s all owed to Mayor Steve Miklos and former City of Folsom Public Information Officer Sue Ryan. “They believed that the community itself had 26 stylefedh.com - September 2016

a keen understanding of the projects that needed to get done in the neighborhoods around the city,” says Communications Manager Christine Brainerd. Last year, over 1,750 volunteers took to the streets, schools and neighborhoods to complete 27 projects. The event values the belief that many hands make light work, and despite the overwhelming turnout, there was no surplus of volunteers, as the event aims to “accomplish many tasks in a single day that would normally take months or even years to complete,” says Brainerd. For more details and to register for a project, visit folsom.ca.us/residents/involved/csday.asp. •

State-of-the-art ICU to open this fall

SPECIAL AD SECTION

BETTER CARE FOR YOU

State-of-the-Art Intensive Care Unit Debuts at Marshall Hospital in Placerville This Fall Reflects Marshall’s Accolades For Critical Care Excellence

One of the new all-private rooms in Marshall’s ICU shows the dramatic increase in space for our patients and families.

Excellent healthcare doesn’t necessarily depend on new facilities--that starts with top-notch physicians, caring, nurses and technology that keeps up with the needs of the community. Marshall Hospital’s services for the critically ill—those that need care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)—have earned this distinction. Healthgrades®, a leading national resource for consumer healthcare information, recognized Marshall as a top 10% Hospital in the Nation for critical care in 2016, for the fourth consecutive year.

SPECIAL AD SECTION

However, Marshall is always seeking to improve care and facilities to support and better reflect the excellent care already provided. Now, after years of careful planning a new, greatly enhanced ICU will soon be available. The total cost of the effort clocks in at nearly $5.5 million—a worthwhile investment for our community.

2

According to Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Krejci, the new ICU offers a number of enhancements over the former unit, which has served our patients well for many years. Chief among the improvements is simply the extra space it provides—doubling the square footage over the old ICU, which was 2,565 square feet; the new space, located on the second floor of the South Wing, boasts 5,000 square feet. |

|

Along with the added square footage, there are more rooms and more privacy for our patients and their families. The old unit had eight rooms with two being semi-private. The new ICU has 12 rooms, each fully private and each with extra space to accommodate family and visitors during lengthy stays. In addition to the benefits the extra space affords, there are also technical and design enhancements to improve both patient care and staff safety. Each room is equipped with ceiling-mounted mechanical patient lifts for ease of movement, patient safety and staff injury reduction. The centrally located nursing station provides views into each patient room. There are also two isolation rooms equipped with air monitor alarms to ensure negative pressure is maintained for patient conditions that require this special care. The old ICU will remain licensed and equipped, offering a total of 20 Intensive Care beds when you add the 12-bed new ICU. The current unit will be used only for overflow when needed. Marshall’s new ICU reflects the excellent care it has always provided to the critically ill, with the space and amenities to match the care.

As an advocate for health and the well-being of our community, Marshall Medical Center adopted a smokefree policy for all campuses on July 1, 2016. All Marshall locations, including the Hospital and all clinic and outpatient facilities, no longer allow smoking on Marshall property. This policy includes vaporizers or e-cigarettes. “The need for this policy is clear,” says Marshall CEO James Whipple. “Our mission is to improve the health of our community, so it’s impossible to justify supporting a habit that is not only terrible for the smoker’s health, but can affect others as well. The policy change is in line with all other healthcare facilities in the region, which already transitioned to smoke-free policies.” Here are some startling facts about what smoking does to your health, courtesy of the American Lung Association • Every year in the United States, nearly 500,000 people die from tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, making it the leading cause of preventable death in our nation.

Get Back in the Game!

Award-Winning Orthopedic Care in Your Own Back Yard

W

ith the Summer Olympics just behind us, perhaps your inspiration for sports and physical fitness has gotten a boost. Granted, very few people are world-class athletes sporting Olympic medals, but that’s how the experienced surgeons at Marshall Orthopedics approach their patients—no matter their age. Stephen Cyphers, MD, President of the orthopedics group, explains the team’s philosophy: “We see people of all ages who have a broad array of orthopedic concerns and we treat each patient as a unique individual with personal fitness and functional goals, so that we can approach their case in just the way that’s right for them.” As Dr. Cyphers explains, our bodies are our own personal vehicle for living life on our terms, the way we want to and when our bodies are in pain and not functioning well, it can be depressing and debilitating. “Physical injury or degenerative problems like arthritis hamper our overall happiness; it can have a severe effect on mood, energy levels and outlook on life,” Dr. Cyphers says. “When patients come to us, they’re typically either dealing with an injury or they have wear and tear joint issues that are keeping them from doing the things they love.” Whether treatment involves physical therapy, surgery

or a combination of both, each of the surgeons on the team has focus areas that are tailored to the specific needs of our community.

A champion for cancer patients, Wendy founded the “Images of Hope” program in 2012 providing art classes and movement therapy for cancer patients. Wendy’s determination and passion originated the now-annual event, Pink in the Night, to illuminate Placerville store-fronts decorated with strands of pink lights, symbolizing a united fight against breast cancer. The October event each year combines an exciting Mammo Man contest. Along with her good friend, the late Lee Turner, she created the White on White events that promote awareness of all cancers while raising funds for “Images of Hope.” In 2014 Wendy brought a smile to everyone’s face when she developed Marshall’s Canine Companion program and introduced us to our four-legged friend “Max.” Today, patients receive encouragement to help reduce stress and pain levels as Max gives unconditional love, security, and companionship. 5 Skin Care Myths, Debunked by Kourtney Jason

N

ot all makeup is created equal, according to Scott Hearth, MD, dermatologist at Granite Bay Dermatology and Laser Center. “[However], most of the active ingredients in over-the-counter makeup and skin care products are generally considered safe and well-tolerated by most people,” he says. The most common problem that he sees with the use of skin care products

is rashes, which shouldn’t be surprising when most product labels include warnings to immediately stop use if a rash appears. “These rashes usually develop from irritation or allergy to one of the active or inactive ingredients,” he says. Are you using the best products for your skin? We asked Dr. Hearth to chime in on common skin care myths.

1 / Myth: Any product can be used for any skin type. Truth: “Most importantly, when choosing products for the skin, it’s important to choose [ones] that are best suited for your skin type, i.e. normal, dry, oily, sensitive, combination, etc. For example, if a person has oily skin or is prone to breaking out, oil-free or noncomedogenic products are best. Conversely, a person with dry or sensitive skin should look for products that have moisturizers and are fragrance-free,” he says.

2 / Myth: Certain ingredients can help with specific skin problems. Truth: Yes. “When choosing a product, look for ingredients that are beneficial for any special needs that you would like to address—acne, sun damage, wrinkles, dark spots, etc.,” he says. “Products containing

3 / Myth: Moisturizer with sunscreen and/ or makeup with SPF 15 are just as effective as actual sunscreen. Truth: Yes and no. It’s important to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Dr. Hearth recommends moisturizer and makeup with a minimum of SPF 15, but ideally with SPF 30 or higher. “Remember SPF refers to UVB protection. Make sure you are getting good UVA protection with sunscreens like avobenzone or zinc oxide, as UVA rays cause brown spots and wrinkles,” he says.

4 / Myth: If you have acneprone skin, your routine should include a scrub. Truth: False. “Avoid products that contain alcohol and witch hazel, or abrasive scrubs, which may irritate inflamed skin and worsen acne,” he warns. “Instead, look for products that have salicylic acid and glycolic acid, which help to unplug pores; or benzoyl peroxide, which works against acne-causing bacteria.”

5 / Myth: Natural and/ or organic products are always the best option. Truth: False. “Natural or organic products are not necessarily better just because they are natural or organic,” he says. “Looking for ingredients that have been shown to be beneficial for your type of skin is an important factor in selecting the right skin care products. Dermatologists are the physician experts in all things related to the skin and can be a valuable resource in helping to develop the best regimen for the health and appearance of your skin.”

retinol and stabilized vitamin C can help improve skin texture and fine wrinkles in sun damaged skin. To help lighten dark spots and unwanted pigmentation, look for products that contain these naturally derived ingredients: glycolic acid, kojic acid, N-acetylglucosamine, niaciamide (vitamin B3), L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and soy.”

oining his technique “color water,” Kevin Mount produces colorful, texturally vibrant pieces with energy and emotion. The awardwinning artist’s work has been featured at the Crocker Art Museum, as well as the KVIE Arts Showcase. Speaking openly about his autism and how it helps artistic abilities, Mount further inspires by giving back to the community. He’s donated over 100 paintings to various causes— including the Make-A-Wish Foundation. A member of Sutter Street Artists, you can view his work at the Bag Lady Boutique and the Folsom Arts Association’s Members’ Show at the Harris Center through September 11.

HLB: What drew you to the medium of watercolor? KM: I started with pencils and, in the beginning, couldn’t understand the watercolor technique. You’re supposed to use more water than color to give a transparent effect, and it’s usually done with big brushes, but it was difficult for me to have control over paint that way; therefore, I developed my own technique—“color water”—where I do the opposite by using less water, more paint and smaller brushes. It makes the colors more vivid and allows for more texture. It takes longer to complete a piece of art, but I enjoy it more this way.

HLB: What inspires you most? KM: As a child, Disney was a highlight in my life, but I also like geishas and mermaids. Recently, I’ve begun working with some nature pieces and animals— that’s something new and beautiful to explore.

HLB: How has autism helped you in your artistic endeavors? KM: I think without autism, I couldn’t do the same things. When people with autism like something, we really love it! We have that extra focus when something interests us. I can sit for hours and paint—all I need is some classical background music, and the colors become a party for my eyes. I can see the picture before I start drawing; sometimes I start in a corner of the paper instead of the middle, because I already have the picture in my mind. If I get tired

HLB: What do you hope viewers take away from your paintings? KM: I want to bring them happiness; I want them to sense and feel the energy of my mind, heart and hands, which are all involved in the rendering of the art; and I want the rainbow colors to make a difference in their day.

American Legion, Marine Corps League, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Amvets, VFW Auxiliary and Submarine Veterans. “We want to get the word out that the Veterans Hall is here,” says Garman, a U.S. Navy captain in the Vietnam War and retired

Stanford physician who now teaches parttime at UC Davis (when he’s not volunteering at the Hall). “There are many veterans in the area who don’t know about it. Once they discover it, they’re eager to join our ranks.” The City of Folsom built the Veterans Hall for VFW Post 6604 and the American Legion in 1995. Over the years, more veterans organizations have settled into the facility, including Rolling Hills Blue Star Moms—mothers, grandmothers and legal guardians with children serving in the military—who meet monthly at the hall. The group also holds packing parties to fill care packages and ship them to active troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. An important objective of VFW Post 6604 and the other member groups is to

riders on horseback, color guards and more.” Local dignitaries and veterans judge the parade entries and present awards in a number of categories. Immediately following the parade, a brief ceremony to honor local veterans is held at the Veterans Memorial in Folsom City Lions Park. The hall is a hub of activity year-round with an event calendar that includes supper nights (Tuesday to Friday) and Sunday breakfasts. Meeting space is offered as a community service to groups and troops such as the Rotary Club of Folsom, Folsom City Host Lions Club, Boy and Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs and the local quilting guild.

homedesign bold statement when filled with colorful foliage or bare branches (try birch). Don’t forget the door—simply hang a homemade wreath with dried pomegranates for a look that transitions easily into winter.

5 / The New Fall-Inspired Table Kick off the beginning of the holiday entertaining season with a new, fallinspired tablescape. Table linens in natural fabrics like linen and burlap are perfect replacements for summer’s airy tabletop linens. Pair patterned dishware with metallic accessories for a bold accent

harvest your décor 5 Ways to Welcome Fall

T

he dog days of summer are slowly coming to a close, and here at Kerrie Kelly Design Lab we’re counting down the days to when the region’s tree-lined streets are golden and pumpkin spice lattes are back on the coffeehouse menu. While we’re not hanging up our swimsuits just yet, September is the perfect time to start gradually transitioning your home. From cable knit throws and seasonal prints to autumn accessories, here are a few easy ways to prepare your home for fall.

1 / Warm Palettes and Prints Nothing inspires us more than a sundrenched space. If your room gets great natural light, use it! Frame your windows with curtains that you can draw should the space get too bright, and choose a fanciful overhead light like a chandelier if your office is go-getter-glam, a table lamp perched on your desk, or a floor lamp in the corner to highlight your accolades on the wall. 54 stylefedh.com - September 2016

2 / Cozy Textures We love sweater weather for so many reasons, especially for adding texture. Switch out lighter coverings for heavier ones, like a faux fur or nubby throw slung over an ottoman or bed. Cable knit isn’t limited to fashion, either—a few cable knit pillows are a cozy addition to any seating area.

3 / Autumn Accessories Accessories are an easy way to usher in a new season for every room. Switch out airy, beachy décor with nature-inspired art, deep-hued accessories and plush drapery. Full-bodied fragranced c a n d l e s co m p l e m e n t a ny mantelpiece with a warm glow and spicy scent. Replace brightly colored summer vases with ones that feature bronze or metallic accents.

4 / Outside In Use the season’s harvest to signal fall inside. We love filling our favorite wooden bowls with rusty red apples and golden pears. An oversized vessel or vase—like a vintage market find or an umbrella stand—makes a

that dresses up any table for the holidays. Tired of gourd-inspired centerpieces? Try clustering a few potted herb plants for a simple centerpiece.

The Gift of Kids Daycare and Preschool Jennifer Kelly 5130 Golden Foothill Pkwy. | El Dorado Hills 916-521-1835 www.thegiftofkids.net I would like to thank everyone for their vote for #1 Favorite Preschool and continuing to trust us with your precious children. I love being part of this community and helping children learn and grow. My own journey began in the daycare preschool field because I was unhappy with the care and education I was receiving for my own children who are now 19 and 16. I have been blessed to have a large facility in El Dorado Hills where I employ 35 loving teachers and care for 200 children. We offer education and care for babies, Preschoolers, Pre-K, private Kindergarten, homework tutor club and transportation for school agers. Don’t be fooled by our large size, our teachers make each classroom homey and warm. It has been a bonus to be on an acre. The Gift of Kids outdoor area gives the kids space to explore, garden, and play on age appropriate playgrounds. The teachers at The Gift of Kids Daycare and Preschool include talent that brings us music, yoga, and even Spanish on a daily basis. Teachers here are all educated in child development, CPR and First Aid certified, and make it a priority to continue their education. Over the years, not only have we focused on love and education here at the school, but we have also been involved in sponsoring many local non-profit groups such as 3 Strands Global, Hands for Hope, American Cancer Society, Sports clubs, many local elementary through High Schools, Serrano Kids movie night, and even contributed to the Concerts in the Park at the CSD. When not at The Gift of Kids taking care of the school, my hobbies include running, snowboarding, boxing, hiking, camping and anything outdoors.

Kochi Sushi & Japanese Bar and Grill Fresh to the Neighborhood

“N

eighborhood sushi bar” isn’t a term most people living in a semirural community would use. Neighborhood bar, feedstore or market would all make the list, but neighborhood sushi isn’t usually part of the realtor’s sales pitch. Yet as I sat and listened to the staff-customer interaction at Kochi, that’s exactly what they have. The restaurant has only been open a few months, yet they’ve already garnered a loyal following. Their seafood is fresh, and the dishes are inventive, artistic and delectable. As I perused the lunch menu, I was mindful of the oppressive heat awaiting me upon finishing, so I set out to stay on the lighter side. The shigoku (meaning “ultimate” in Japanese) oysters—off of the Chef’s Special Menu—were a perfect start. Chilled, with a touch of sriracha heat, lemon and the natural oyster liquor, made them a match well-suited for the 100-degree heat outside. Next up were the O.G. Bonbons, also one of the chef’s specials. O.G. apparently likes his bonbons made of surimi (crab) and cream cheese—all wrapped in buttery hamachi (Japanese yellowtail) and served with a combination of sauces. Much

like their chocolate namesake, they were a sinful delight. Moving to the nigiri menu, Chef Ming delivered a tasting plate of hamachi, sake (salmon) and tako (steamed octopus) that featured skillful knife work and a beautifully simple presentation with fish as fresh as you would expect from any high-end Japanese restaurant. My final order of the Jonh Roll sent shockwaves through Chef Ming and his assistant. “It’s really big!” was the response from the incredulous pair. And so it was. After watching the chef expertly coax and cajole deep-fried shrimp, surimi, cucumber, unagi, ebi, avocado, tobiko

and green onion throughout this godzilla of a rice roll, he muscled the creation down in front of me. So much for eating light in the B.B.Q. Albacore heat. I managed to enjoy a couple slices of the masterful monstrosity before tactfully tapping out. “To-go box, please?” Next time you’re in the area, I highly advise stopping by Kochi for some neighborhood sushi. You’ll be glad you did. Hamachi Nigiri

taste GARLIC-HERB SPAGHETTI SQUASH WITH LEMON Living the Mediterranean Diet by Nick Nigro and Bay Ewald with Rea Frey (Ulysses Press, 2015, $21.95) The oblong spaghetti squash is a truly magical food. Often when we eat pasta, we feel the need to combat the carbs with lots of veggies or a lean meat. Spaghetti squash gives us the same pasta-type feel, yet we love to mix it with nothing but the beautiful simplicity of fresh herbs, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil. And of course, the Parmigiano-Reggiano is the final—and most important—ingredient to this lovely yellow treat.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Start by cutting the spaghetti s q u a s h i n h a l f. S p a g h e t t i squash is notoriously difficult to cut, and there are numerous ways to do it. Some swear by placing it on the counter and hacking it in half with a sharp butcher knife. Others cut off both ends and slice the squash while it’s standing. We use a sharp serrated knife and take our time rocking the knife in and out, leaving the stem on so as to use the hollowed-out squash as a bowl. Regardless of how you get

dinner date Food and Beer for the Season there, once your squash is in half, scoop out the seeds and discard them. Drizzle the inside with olive oil and season with sea salt and black pepper. Place skinside up on a baking sheet, and bake in the oven for 35 minutes. Remove from the oven, flip the halves over so that the flesh can breathe, and let cool for about 15 minutes. Once cool, use a fork to scrape the squash strands out, as if scooping. Set aside on a large plate or flat surface. Heat the 1⁄4 cup olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic, basil, thyme, oregano, spaghetti squash and lemon juice. Sauté for about 10 minutes, or until the ingredients are fully incorporated. Remove from heat and garnish with black pepper and shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serves 4.

KNEE DEEP BREWING COMPANY WET WITTEE Knee Deep Brewing Company was one of the first Sacramento breweries to make a splash in the craft beer community. Although they tend to focus on IPAs, this 5.3-percent ABV Belgian-style white ale is just as satisfying as any of their award-winning, hop-forward IPAs. Well-balanced and very sessionable, with a lovely hazy-blonde hue, it holds a little bit of citrus zest, making it a perfect pairing with this month’s Garlic-Herb Spaghetti Squash with Lemon. Light and refreshing, the beer still holds complex and interesting flavors without taking away from the deliciousness of the delicate meal. —Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles Restaurant & Pub

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? I definitely went searching for it. I was disappointed in the lack of gyms and fitness professionals addressing the human spirit when talking about getting “fit,” so I decided to create a place where women could go to be uplifted, supported and enthusiastically cheered on as they get their mind, body and spirit in amazing shape. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? This past year, we were the main sponsors to Stand Up Placer, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Unravel Pediatric Cancer. What’s more, we consistently offer “extra” value into our membership by including amazing hikes around the Sierras, free CPR certifications, swim lessons, life coaching, PiYoBa (a blend of Pilates, yoga and barre), triathlon, trial running and more. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Overcoming years of domestic violence, abuse, addiction and building a place of empowerment for women that is safe, healthy and fun. In ending decades of dysfunction, I have set a whole new path for my children and my marriage. To have taken those lessons and built something really good from it is extremely rewarding. Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? My hubby. He is my rock and is unconditional in his support and love for me. Everyone needs just one person—some are lucky to have more, but he has been my role model in his unwavering faith, and having faith has been huge in building Mama Bootcamp. What’s your biggest job perk? Working outside—amongst the trails, mountains and rivers—in this beautiful area. The biggest “perk,” however, is the amazing women I get to coach. I always consider it an honor to be a catalyst for change!

Do you know that our editorial is not paid for, nor can it be purchased? In fact, our Introducing and Dine reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

We specialize in upscale residential design and have experience in hospitality design, new construction design, remodel design and project management. Shade Black’s love for beautifully designed spaces and unique furniture pieces give us a design perspective that allows us to create a design that is fresh, yet timeless. My longtime passion for interior design and furniture led me to it. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I grew up in El Dorado Hills and have lived in the Sacramento area almost my entire life. Once a month, I give a “shout out” and feature a local business on my blog. My fiancé and I have also signed up to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? My parents. They are a great balance of business and creative and have each taught me so many great things. I’m the person I am today because of them. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I go on a run with my black Lab/German shepherd mix, Shade; he’s also who my business is named after. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? I love my aesthetician and good friend, Stacy, of Stacy’s Place in the Palladio. I would never let anyone else touch my eyebrows! Second is Amanda (also a good friend) of Blush in the Palladio. She’s an amazing hairstylist! And finally, customer service is…? All about the relationship. You need to listen to your client to learn how to make them happy.

5 September Sing-Alongs by Tom Mailey

H

5 / Neil Diamond, “September Morn” Sure, it may be cliché to include this one from Neil at the height of his glorious late’70s glittery-shirt days, but when he’s able to wring every ounce of drama from lines like… September morn Do you remember how we danced that night away? Two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play September mornings still can make me feel that way.

DON’T MISS STYLE’S 20+

MUST-TRY LOCAL BEERS AND WINES

…how can you not include it? So I did. Sorry, not sorry.

4 / Frank Sinatra, “September Song” Yep, Frank’s got two songs about September. This one,

98 stylefedh.com - September 2016

writ te n by Willie Nelson back when he was known primarily as one of America’s best songwriters, is about romance…or the lack of it…sung from the point of view of a guy who is fine with a little flirting in spring and summer, but he’s getting a little impatient that he hasn’t yet found that special someone to help keep his furnace stoked, so to speak, as winter draws near. Oh, it’s a long, long while from May to December But the days grow short when you reach September When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame One hasn’t got time for the waiting game

goes right to your heart. And when your dad happens to be Johnny Cash, well, you ask him to join you on this gorgeous reflection from 2003 about what it means to have a loved one in the autumn of their life. When the shadows lengthen And burn away the past They will fly me like an angel to A place where I can rest When this begins I’ll let you in September when it comes

1 / Earth, Wind & Fire, “September” 3 / Green Day, “Wake Me Up When September Ends” This beautiful, mournful ballad could be interpreted as someone recalling the end of a long-ago summer romance, but singer Billy Joe Armstrong actually wrote it about the death of his father when he was 10, as spelled out by the heart-wrenching lines. Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends Like my father’s come to pass 20 years has gone so fast Wake me up, when September ends

2 / Roseanne and Johnny Cash, “September When It Comes” For anyone with an aging parent, this one

Let’s end this playlist on a high note, shall we? The beat. The horns. Those falsetto “ba de yas”…this one gets you swaying like an autumn wind through the branches of a Lake Tahoe aspen grove. No month has ever had a better anthem. Say do you remember Dancin’ in September Never was a cloudy dayyyyyyyy.... It’s stuck in your head now, isn’t it? Mine too. If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna pop it on the stereo now and go rake some leaves.

ave you ever noticed how many songs there are about September? Seriously. Look it up. I stopped counting at 20. Maybe it’s as simple as September rhyming perfectly with “December” and “remember,” or maybe it’s because September is a fulcrum of sorts—the pivot point as summer turns to fall…the shorter days and longer shadows…the hint of a chill in the air. As we say goodbye to summer and all its joys—including, perhaps, a summer romance—and with looming gloom of winter ahead, songwriters, it seems, tend to get a little introspective. Melancholy, too—many of the songs deal with loss or impending loss. No matter. September has inspired some classic songs. Tony Bennett, “Maybe September.” Carole King, “It Might as Well Rain Until September.” Frank Sinatra, “September of My Years.” As you head out this month to hit Apple Hill, take in the fall colors of the Sierra, or if you’re just feeling a little introspective, here are five songs about September that should be on your playlist.
