allelujah! We made it to June, and with a big sigh of relief, we welcome summertime’s long lazy days. Lazy for the lucky few, I suppose! Nonetheless, we seem to catch our breath and delight in outdoor cooking, farmers’ markets, baseball games, water play and oh so much more. But soon after we’ve stowed away those endof-the-year, slightly mangled class projects, the panic sets in. What are the kids going to do this summer? I recall vividly my childhood summer days when vacation meant three months of departing the homestead in the morning, on bike, to meet up with the neighborhood crew with exploring and inventing games to span the eight-hour day in mind before pedaling back to where we came from, exhausted and sun burned. The next day would pick up where we left off, of course. Occasionally, Mom would load us into the car for a day at the water park or at the lake, along with the requisite cooler packed to the brim with sugary drinks, Tears of joy sandwiches, fruit snacks and chips of all varieties. Boy, are like the those were the days! summer rain I’m quite spoiled living here though, as there is so many local options for good times all summer long. And drops pierced with the summer solstice occurring on June 20, there’s by sunbeams. even more time in the day to accomplish a myriad of —Hosea activities. In many writings, the solstice is described as a Ballou time to be happy. “It is a time to remove unwanted things from your life…a time to dance and sing and spread joy, and be filled with love.” Sounds good to me! I can’t think of a better introduction than this for our annual guide to “99+ Fun Things to Do This Summer”-a local itinerary, if you will, including a little bit of everything, from concert series and festivals to camps and things for the kids to special events all about food. You’ll want to keep this issue handy! Until next month and in celebration of the summer solstice, follow tradition and stand still for a moment to savor the joy sunshine brings…and a few of those aforementioned activities alongside Pops. Happy Father’s Day to all the men who matter most, including my own. — Desiree

What’s number one on your summer playlist? The Beach Boys album, Pet Sounds…2016 marks its 50th anniversary, and it sounds as good today as it did when I was 9—“God Only Knows,” “Sloop John B,” “Wouldn’t it be nice.” It’s one of the 10 greatest albums of all time.

BEGINS HERE Q:

Nowadays, what are the advantages of enlisting the services of a travel agent?

A:

Whether you’re the do-it-yourself type or are looking for someone to completely take the reins, when you collaborate with a travel advisor, your trips will be tailored to your needs, interests and budget, thus receiving fully personalized service. Travel agencies/advisors have access to the same—and oftentimes better— pricing as those you can find online, and can secure special perks like free room upgrades, daily breakfast and other benefits you can’t get on your own. In addition to saving you time, stress and money, an agent is your advocate before, during and after a trip. —Ilona Kupec, Manager Coastline Travel Advisors 4540 Post Street, Suite 220, El Dorado Hills 916-939-8785, coastlinetravel.com

and present great opportunities for taxpayers to connect with their trusted CPAs and strategize tax goals for the current and following years. Most life situations can trigger various tax effects, and seeking proper advice will help you make better-informed decisions. Are you changing jobs? Did your filing status change? Looking to sell your principal residence or rental properties? Are your kids getting ready or going to college? For business owners, adding strategy sessions and keeping up-to-date accounting records is key to understanding financial health and cash flow. I recommend at least mid-year or end-of-year tax planning to answer any questions in advance, make any necessary changes prior to year-end, and secure proper business deductions. —Paul Lee, CPA Principal PSG Certified Public Accountants 9257 Sierra College Boulevard, Suite B, Roseville 916-791-3120, psgcpas.com June 2016 - stylefedh.com 13

Q&A

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self? A: Don’t work so hard! Q: What comes to you naturally? A: Exercise and laughter. Q: What’s your biggest pet peeve? A: “Cheapskates”—people who aren’t generous. Q: Biggest life inspirations? A: To leave a legacy of generosity. Q: What are you most proud of? A: My two children and their success; also, my marriage. Q: Best words of wisdom you’ve received? A: “The journey is the dream.”

Michael Gaddini, MD

18 stylefedh.com - June 2016

Over the years, both Gaddini’s father and his best friend—not to mention many patients—passed away after time spent in hospice, and such experiences reinforced his belief in the importance of providing compassionate, dignified care at the end of a person’s life. He is a strong advocate for the hospice movement, and often gives public talks as a way to educate people about the issue. “End-of-life care is the greatest gift we can give someone,” he shares. “We can show up and courageously try and walk that journey with them, and do the best we can to make their end of life symptom-free, in the presence of loved ones, with spiritual meaning.” — Amber Foster

r. Michael Gaddini has been a family practice physician in Folsom for over three decades, and the most rewarding part of his job is caretaking a family’s health throughout all of life’s major milestones: births, deaths and everything in between. “Patient care gives you a place in a family, in terms of trust and respect,” he explains. “It really is an honor.” This month, Gaddini is retiring from his practice in order to become the associate medical director for Snowline Hospice’s Sacramento team. “I’ve had a keen interest in end-of-life care, all my medical career,” he recalls, but he also remembers the way his medical school classes and colleagues rarely discussed the subject.

Rice Express

T

here’s definitely no dearth of Chinese restaurants in our multicultural neighborhood, so when I stumble upon something a little different than the usual offerings, it makes me want to whoop with joy. Such was my reaction when I looked at Rice Express’ menu. Apart from Mongolian beef and Kung Pao chicken, the restaurant had a category of “sizzling plates,” and I immediately ordered the Sizzling Beef, Chicken & BBQ Pork offering. Soon, the waitress laid down a dark platter that smoked and sputtered and smelled divine. On it sat heaps of thinly sliced beef, pink-rimmed barbecue pork and chicken in a still-bubbling sauce. Tossed with the meats were green bell peppers, onions and minced garlic galore. The sauce was sweet and salty and rendered the meat juicy and tender, while the veggies were slightly charred, which added a nice smoky flavor. I made sure I scraped up every last drop of sauce with some white rice, after polishing off the rest of the platter—waste not, want not! This dish is definitely a great “find.” Find out for yourself at Rice Express, 25004 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 115, Folsom, 916-353-1934. —Tara Mendanha

CATCH ALL

BY DAYANA STOCKDALE

“Remember seeing a picture on the news of curly headed Bill Clinton shaking JFK’s hand?” asks Ron Hahn, commander for the American Legion Folsom Post 362. “Well, when that picture was taken he was the Boys Nation Representative of Arkansas from 1963.” This month, 1,000 boys and 500 girls from all over California will descend on the Sacramento State campus for the honor of participating in the weeklong Boys State and Girls State programs. Students from Oak Ridge, Vista del Lago and Folsom High Schools were nominated by their school’s career counselors and then chosen by the Post. “We divide them into different political parties, and [then] assign them to a city and county,” says Hahn. This premier leadership

program takes only juniors, with the hope that they’ll bring new leadership skills back to their schools for their final year. While at Boys State and Girls State, students write motions and laws and run elections, selecting leaders who will become sheriffs and majors. “At the end, they’ll come out with two guys and two girls as senators who will go to Boys Nation or Girls Nation the following month in Washington, D.C.” The American Legion formed after World War I to continue the camaraderie between soldiers when they returned home. In 1946, the American Legion created the first Boys Nation program, and the American Legion Auxiliary started Girls Nation just one year later. Notable graduates include Neil Armstrong, Bill Gates, Michael Jordan and Lieutenant General Michelle D. Johnson. “It’s the most respected and selective educational program of governance structure for high school students,” says Hahn. For more info, visit boysandgirlsstate.org. •

Measurement, in inches, that ultimately halted Theodore Judah’s own dream of a transcontinental railroad. Shunned by the Big Four, in 1862 he built 13 miles of railroad from Folsom to Wildwood, but it only ran for two years until it was closed; it was too short for commercial use and the gauge was three-and-ahalf inches wider than what would become standard width. Judah died in 1863.

The number of guns that awoke Sacramento at 4 a.m. in July 1895. The city was not under attack—it was a 100 gun salute to celebrate the electric power that had miraculously travelled over 22 miles from the Folsom Powerhouse to illuminate the city—an exciting new development in long distance high-voltage transmission. HEY SACRAMENTO, YOU AWAKE?!

1882

The last time Folsom saw a steamship along the American River; 30 years of hard-rock tunneling and hydraulic mining to dislodge the gold in riverbeds had finally rendered the river un-navigable, and in 1882 “Daisy” the steamer made her last run.

I think the most important factors that lead to successful performances are to be well prepared and to realize that a performance is about sharing music with people who want you to tell them a story. Sometimes it involves blood, sweat and tears to achieve a high level, but once a performer steps on the stage, the concern is no longer about them. The audience wants to hear the music—they want to be moved emotionally. If a performer

they should always be in air conditioning or brought out of the car with you. If you’re flying with pets, either bring them into the cabin with you if allowed, or make sure your airline takes precautions to control the temperature of the cargo area they’ll be held in, as well as any areas their crates will be stored during layovers and flight changes. Make sure they’ll have access to water at all times and be checked on during transport.”

3 / Keep cool with shade and water For both indoor and outdoor pets, it’s always a good idea to have fresh water and shaded areas available at all times, says Jason Davis, “The Dog Guy,” co-owner of Folsom Dog Resort and Training Center. Even when you’re not home, keeping the house cool is also beneficial for your pets.

A

s temperatures reach triple digits, humans aren’t the only ones looking for ways to escape the heat. Just like us, pets can experience heat exhaustion and even get sunburned— “especially on their ears and noses,” explains Dr. Barbara Laderman Jones, DVM, director of veterinary services at Placer SPCA. “Dogs and cats with light-colored fur (white) are more susceptible to skin cancer.” Specific breeds are also at higher risk in the hottest months. “Older, obese or short-nosed dogs—pugs, bulldogs, Boston terriers, pekingese, boxers, shih tzus and French bulldogs—are less tolerant of heat; [along with] older dogs, puppies and dogs with health issues...of course, you should keep a close eye on your dog in the heat, no matter what her breed, age or state of health is,” Dr. Laderman Jones says, by following the five tips below.

jogging with your pet is a poor idea in high heat and especially humidity.”

degrees in less than 30 minutes,” explains Dr. Brad Cahoon, DVM, CVA, owner of Veterinary Healing Centers. “On [a] 100plus degree day, the inside of a car can reach over 130 degrees very rapidly. Pets should never, under any circumstances or for any amount of time, be left inside a parked car. If you have to travel with them,

“Walk your dog during the cooler hours of the day—i.e., early morning and evening,” Dr. Laderman Jones says. “If exercising in the heat, be mindful that your dog can’t easily tell you when he/she has had enough. Shorten walks. And in general, 38 stylefedh.com - June 2016

2 / Make proper travel arrangements “The inside of a car, even on a mild 70 degree day, can reach upwards of 90-100

“Excessive panting or drooling, increased heart or respiratory rate, weakness, disorientation and collapse are all signs of heat stroke in pets,” Dr. Cahoon says. “Stop what you’re doing immediately and seek veterinary care if any of these are noted. Try putting cool water on the pads of their feet and in their groin/armpit areas, but caution must be taken not to cool them down too quickly. Shock and organ damage can occur from them overheating, as well as from too rapidly cooling them off.”

5 / Beware of mosquitoes “With warm weather come mosquitoes, which transmit deadly heartworm infections to dogs,” Dr. Cahoon says. “Take them to your vet for heartworm testing annually, and keep them on heartworm preventive care year-round. Fleas and ticks are also common this time of year, so using quality flea and tick prevention is very important. Make sure if you take your pet on hikes or around water that you’re keeping them safe from the elements and wildlife. Being careful in the heat means a summer of fun for you and your pet!”

furniture for families Helping to Make Houses Homes by Dayana Stockdale // photos by Dante Fontana

O

n May 1, Furniture for Families celebrated its 15th anniversary by doing more of the same— picking up furniture from homes in El Dorado Hills, Folsom and Rancho Cordova for those in the Greater Sacramento area who can demonstrate a true need. The organization’s roots were planted after Jan Voy, founder and director of the nonprofit, was volunteering at Twin Lakes Food Bank, where she constantly took calls from people asking if they could donate their furniture. When Voy talked with an employee of the food bank about taking the furniture on offer, she was told there was simply no room for any of it. “I [suggested getting] a warehouse, and she said, ‘Oh I just know that’s what you’re meant to do,’” Voy remembers. “It knocked me off my feet for a minute.” Not long after, Voy and her husband used a grant from Aerojet to cover the cost of the warehouse for the first three years. “We don’t have the ability to go into people’s homes and see for ourselves

what they have and don’t have, but we need to know,” says Voy, who explains that one principle of the organization is to only give furniture that a family does not currently have—instead of upgrading existing pieces. “We require that the social worker or the caseworker make a home visit and see with their own eyes.” For added credibility, the caseworker must also be present when the family comes to haul the furniture home. And Voy certainly has stories to tell. In addition to furniture, the nonprofit stores donated towels, blankets and kitchen items. She’s given plates to a family who was reusing paper ones, blankets to a family who had to line several children up on the floor and cover them all with one, and living room furniture to a single mother who studied psychology at Sacramento State while living in a homeless shelter. “The families are treated with dignity. When they walk in the door, I want it to look as close to a store as it can,” Voy says. “It’s still just a warehouse where

everything is used, but we try to have it looking nice.” When initially setting up the organization, Voy found a listserv that connected her to the other 50 furniture banks in the country. She and her husband visited the Sharehouse in Seattle to see Top (L to R): Iris Stewart and Alisha Gervais; Bottom (L to R): Jonathan VitalFrancis and Inara Stewart-Vital

how they handled necessary forms, communication with various agencies and the warehouse space. The director of that nonprofit had been homeless before. “I thought if someone’s willing to give us their crummy old furniture for free, we [should] take it. He said ‘No, nobody deserves junk. Don’t ever take junk.’” Furniture for Families most often runs out of dressers, tables and chairs, and there have been unforeseen benefits in picking up such items. “People are grateful when their furniture is not going to be sold, [but instead is] going directly to people who need it,” Voy says. She’s also witnessed the transformative power of service in the 35 volunteers who help schedule furniture pick-ups and warehouse visits.

retreat to bliss Step Up Your Outdoor Space: 3 Ways by Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID

W

hether curating an outdoor kitchen or reconstructing a beautiful new deck, something about the warm weather makes the team here at Kerrie Kelly Design Lab want to blur the lines between the indoors and out with beautiful design and fashion-forward functionality. Living in Cali, it’s key to create an inviting, curated space for outdoor entertaining. Here are a few ways to add fashion-forward function to your backyard for the perfect outdoor sanctuary.

1 / GRAB A GRILL Whether you’re cooking up ribs for a family birthday party, or grilling lobster for two, a barbecue is the star of the outdoor kitchen. We love ones made of stainless steel, because they’re easy to clean and withstand the heat of the outdoors. Make sure to find a grill equipped with features that you know you’ll need—like plenty of space for multiple entrées or a griddle area for carefully cooking veggies or fish. Choose a few complementary appliances to go with it too, like a wine fridge or prep area.

2 / FABULOUS FABRICS Another key aspect of the perfect outdoor entertainment area is the fabric used on cushions and pillows. Fabrics like Sunbrella are durable, heat-resistant and easy to clean, making them the ideal finish for your favorite chaise or outdoor seating. Create a comfy dining or sitting area that mimics indoor living with multiple cushions and pillowss.

Last but certainly not least, outdoor kitchens and dining areas need accessories to spice up the space. Elements like area rugs, placemats, linens, lighting and entertainment systems go a long way. Choose an outdoor rug that’s both comfortable underfoot and beautiful to look at, and complement it with placemats and dining ware that matches your style. Outdoor lighting is also a must for when entertaining goes into the wee hours. We love the way outdoor floor lamps look next to cushioned spaces. Finally, always remember to have a few extra candles for ambiance!

Mary’s Gold Miner Café Home-style Goodness in Every Big Bite by Lorn Randall // photos by Dante Fontana

I

’m trying my best not to write the obvious taglines and clichés: Mary’s Gold Miner Café—“Breakfast Has Gone to the Greeks”; or, “My Big Fat Greek Breakfast.” But neither of those would be accurate, because although Mary’s has plenty of authentic Greek dishes, I’m going to have to come back to try them. I asked our friendly server, Nikole, which dishes are their most popular and as per her suggestion, we began the morning with a gargantuan, buttery and flaky house-made buttermilk biscuit. Standing three-to-four inches tall, it was like starting breakfast with a cake, a whole cake. After a sip of their signature freshsqueezed orange juice, I ventured south, as in south of the border, with their equally massive, four egg, chile verde omelet. I have to deliver a confession here: I’m not an omelet fan. Too often they’re dry and overcooked or dripping with…orange stuff. But this was neither. Instead, it was full of tender, mouthwatering pork, simmered to perfection in Mary’s tomatillo-green chile sauce, and absolutely as good a rendition of chile verde that you’ll find in any GreekAmerican breakfast café—and it was in an

omelet. Consider the irony. Finally, we had to try something on the sweeter side (the biscuit really didn’t count), so in keeping with the day’s theme, we opted for the blueberry and cream cheese stuffed French toast. Now if you think that’s a mouthful to say, just wait until it lands on your table. By now our table looked as if Paul Bunyan and a few of his axe-wielding pals stopped by after fasting all winter. The plate was piled high with three hefty planks of Texas toast, loaded with sweet cream cheese and topped with whipped cream and fresh blueberries (or strawberries). That dish alone would feed a camp full of seriously hungry, modern-day gold miners. Since it was just two of us, and all of that food, we packed out several to-go containers for delivery to the homestead. The décor is rustic and 49er-themed, and includes wall murals and ceiling lamps that portray an iconic time in local history. Nice ambiance, I just have to remember to get “back to the Greek.”

1 cup tamari 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 tbsp. grated ginger 1 tbsp. grated garlic 2 tsp. fines herbes (finely chopped parsley, chives, tarragon, and chervil), divided 2 tbsp. grapeseed oil 3–4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 2 1/2 pounds), trimmed of excess fat, and sliced in half horizontally 1 large egg 1 medium shallot, roughly chopped 1 clove garlic 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1/2 tsp. maple syrup, grade B 2 tbsp. Champagne vinegar or white wine vinegar 1/4 cup roughly chopped chives 1 1/2 tbsp. toasted sesame oil 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 1/2 cups thinly sliced sugar snap peas 2 1/2 cups finely shredded Napa cabbage 2 cups halved cherry tomatoes 1 1/2 cups thinly shaved watermelon radish or other radish 1/4 cup sesame seeds, toasted 1 lemon, cut into quarters Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper, plus Maldon sea salt for finishing

In a medium bowl, whisk together the tamari, white wine, ginger, grated garlic, 1 teaspoon of the fines herbes, grapeseed oil, and black pepper. Add the chicken, turning several times to evenly coat it. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator for 4-6 hours. For the vinaigrette, cook the egg in boiling water for 7 minutes. Remove immediately, and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking. You should have a firm white and barely set yolk. Peel and place in a blender along with the shallot, garlic, mustard, lemon juice, maple syrup, and vinegar. Pulse to combine,

dinner date Food and Beer for the Season scraping down the sides as you go. Add the chives, the remaining 1 teaspoon of fines herbes, salt, and pepper. With the motor running, stream in the toasted sesame oil and olive oil until emulsified. Transfer to a glass jar, and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Next, preheat the grill to 450 degrees, or place an indoor grill pan or heavy-cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken for about 2-3 minutes per side, until grill marks form and the internal temperature registers at least 165 degrees. If using a charcoal grill, create a twozone fire, with all the coals on one side. Cook the chicken for about 2 minutes per side, then move it to the cool side of the grill, covered, to finish cooking through, if necessary. Remove the chicken from the grill, and allow it to rest before slicing on the bias into bite-size pieces. The chicken can be made a day ahead and refrigerated overnight, if desired. In a large serving bowl, toss the chicken, peas, cabbage, tomatoes, and radish with the desired amount of vinaigrette. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, Maldon sea salt, and black pepper. Serve with lemon wedges on the side. Serves 4.

BERRYESSA BREWING CO. SESSION SAISON Located in blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Winters, just 45 minutes from Sacramento, Berryessa is a 20-barrel craft brewery headed by award-winning Brewmaster Chris Miller. Enjoy the current offerings at their relaxed, familyfriendly taproom that’s sited in a converted fruit-packing shed. Session Saison pours light golden in color with medium body and boasts a crisp white head. The aroma is made up of oranges, hints of vanilla and spice notes, while the taste has smidgens of citrus, malt and earthiness. Saisons are typically served during summer months, and this particular one makes for a delightful pairing with the Grilled Tamari-Ginger Chicken Salad. —Richard Righton, Owner, 36 Handles Pub & Eatery

wonder of the world 5 Can’t-Miss Turkish Delights by Megan Wiskus

It’s dark, way too early, and my heart is thumping; after 10 minutes on winding dirt roads, our driver stops in a field that’s filled with hot air balloons—each one marked with different colors and company names. He parks in front of a ruby-hued blimp and tells us to disembark. Cold and nervous, I’m tempted to ask if I can stay buckled up inside the van, where it’s warm and seems safe. But then I remember that I’m in Turkey—and you only live once—so I say a little prayer, then jump out of the vehicle and into the balloon basket. In what seems perfectly plucked from a whimsical fairy tale, the sun and balloon rise in perfect harmony—honeycombed hills below, rosé sky above. Despite six others on the ride, it’s completely silent, which only seems appropriate as we’re suspended in the air witnessing Mother Nature’s landscape at her finest.

ouching down in Turkey, my expectations were a blank slate. What I quickly discovered is the vast land— slightly larger than Texas, with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern neighbors—boasts a history as rich as baklava and a vibrant patchwork of people (some of the kindest you’ll ever meet), places and culture, with a cuisine that’ll leave you hungry for more.

ISTANBUL Ambling along Istanbul’s cobblestone, cat-filled streets you’ll find mosques mingled amidst churches and ancient ruins nuzzled next to modern high rises, resulting in a juxtaposition of old and new that draws wanderers immediately in. Spanning two continents—Europe and Asia—and sited along the Bosphorus, Turkey’s largest city is home to roughly 18 million and has plenty of sights—and hammams (bath houses)—to soak in.

A personal tour guide guarantees you won’t get lost and are shown around by someone with a wealth of knowledge and genuine passion for the place they live; what’s more, they always know the best “local” spots to dine and can help when haggling at the bazaar.

2 / The Turks take their morning meal seriously, and Vault Karaköy’s doesn’t disappoint. Rise and shine with an impressive spread of fresh-squeezed juices (my favorite was the ever-present pomegranate), dolmas, roasted eggplant, just-picked tomatoes, cheeses, olives, heavenly slabs of honeycomb, pastries, figs, sucuk (a dry, spicy sausage), yogurt, jams, made-to-order egg dishes and the menu goes on… truly giving guests a taste of what Turkish breakfast is all about. Fun fact: Although Turkish coffee (which comes in six varieties of sweetness) is widely consumed, locals typically start their day with tea and wait until after breakfast before imbibing in a jolt of java.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? I found my business. Whole Person Fitness is a by-appointment-only gym that offers private, quiet time between the trainer and client. I never want anyone to feel uncomfortable or intimidated in my gym. So many clients tell me about their frustrations at big gyms, with the sales pitch, being stared at, not knowing what to do, and not being able to find a good trainer for a reasonable price. They feel like they can’t be themselves. When I came up with the concept of Whole Person Fitness, I kept the client in mind. It doesn’t matter what challenges you have physically—we can help you. My trainers and I offer meal plans that are designed for each client’s body type and what they hope to achieve. I do not believe in diets—they don’t work—you need to eat to be able to get where you want to be. I’m also certified as a neuro-linguistic practitioner (NLP) and birth doula, as well I have a personal training certificate from California State University, East Bay. I’ve been in this field for over 19 years and have helped many clients meet (and maintain) their fitness goals for lifelong success. Our gym also offers a boutique with workout clothes, protein shakes, handmade jewelry and more. We also have a registered dietician upon request. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? With my clients, I always make myself available to them—either by text, email or phone—somewhat like a sponsor. What’s your hidden talent? Creating, whether it’s making jewelry, writing, cooking or baking; also, knowing how to make a bad situation good. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Suds Car Wash and Detail, Juice It Up, and Face in a Book.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Maria is a professional freelance makeup artist, a former salon owner and a hairstylist with almost a decade of experience working in the fashion, wedding and beauty industries. Her work often takes her to San Francisco, Sacramento, Folsom and Los Angeles. She has had the privilege of working with a wide variety of talented people and often donates her time and expertise to local runway fashion shows and charity events, as a way to give back and help build Sacramento’s flourishing fashion industry. Her hair and makeup work has been presented on the covers of several wedding and fashion industry publications, including Jute and Zélé. As a beauty specialist, she strives to maintain perfection so that clients are always picture perfect. For every beautiful face, she creates makeup that is unique for each individual and tailored to their style and personality. After attending one of the top beauty schools in the region, Maria opened her own successful business—Salon Studio. With a new addition to her family, she built on these accomplishments and decided to take a new business path that would allow her to be home with her boys, thus Beautiful Disaster Cosmetics was born. It was created for women who are imperfectly perfect in every way—working women, stayat-home moms, single ladies and married women. The products are customized specifically for you, because beauty is not defined by what you do; rather, it’s defined by who you are. All products are paraben-free, hypoallergenic, allergy tested, noncomedogenic, fragrance free and not tested on animals. Where do you go when the going gets tough? The gym—it’s my temple. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Hop House. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Gypsy Dawn Beauty Bar—the ladies there are pretty amazing! And finally, customer service is…? How you make a person feel about herself at the end of the day!

I

had a pretty awesome backyard growing up. It wasn’t huge; it didn’t have a pool. My mom had this ridiculous azalea bush that consumed baseballs and even more lawn with every passing season. My dad’s barbecue wasn’t gas; he used briquettes, and they only seemed to ignite once he started cussing at them. I learned to throw a ball in that backyard. If I needed space, I had a tree to climb. There was a gigantic, bustling ant hill back by my dad’s horseshoe pit, near the ruins of an old swingset that seemed just as rusty and dangerous when it was new. There was a hose to drink from when I got thirsty, a sprinkler to run through if it got hot and, despite my mom’s azaleas, plenty of lawn to

lay on—a lawn I eventually learned to mow while my dad supervised from the patio with a can of Oly in his hand and a Mariners game on a buzzy old portable radio. The American backyard didn’t start off as a place for a kid to spend his idle hours or a retreat for busy parents. Originally, it was a space for practical things: growing food, hanging laundry, storing garbage, keeping animals and, of course, the outhouse had to go somewhere. When cars first came along, the garage was often located back there, too. Know why? Because of the notcompletely-unfounded fear that those newfangled combustion engines might explode. The backyard was, as one historian put it, “all business.” Until the ‘50s, the backyard was a place you were more likely to catch tetanus than a few ZZZs. FOR MORE TOM’S TAKES, VISIT STYLEFEDH.COM. on lawn chairs sipping iced tea. That was the idyll, anyway. Some of it may have even been true. Or, at least, true enough that we’ve embraced the notion of the backyard as our personal refuge for over six decades now. In that time, simple grills have morphed into outdoor kitchens with pizza ovens; patios are now full-blown entertainment centers. You can have a pool that makes an alpine lake look like a mud puddle and there are sport courts that could host an NBA game. My own yard has no less than seven different kinds of fruit trees, a vegetable garden, a tool shed, a fire pit and a duck. Yes, a duck. But that’s a different story. My point is, while all that is well and good—hey, if you can watch first-run movies under the stars while munching on a flatbread pizza you just pulled from your wood-fired oven, why wouldn’t you?—the backyard doesn’t have to be

a theme park. Because ultimately, a good backyard isn’t about “stuff.” It’s about a place for peace of mind. It’s for relaxing, whether that’s on canvas folding chairs from Sports Authority or teak recliners from Ikea. It’s for entertaining, whether at that old shed you’ve converted into a miniature Irish pub or on a patio slab with a few burgers grilling on a hibachi. For all its permutations, the backyard is still simply one of the best spots in the world to sip a cold one, read a book, daydream, teach a kid to throw, raise veggies, and let Mom’s azaleas get a little out of control. And there is no better place for listening to ball games than on old buzzy radios.
