Doug Hawkins RN (Administrator) and Carole Mann LVN (Medicare Specialist)
We Make Home Visits Our Goal is Continuity of Care We ensure that when residents are discharged home their care continues to match the care received at Western Slope. Upon discharge Doug and Carole will come visit in about one week. “I enjoy following the patient from the hospital environment and into their homes. It’s rewarding to see their positive health transformations and successes,” states Carole. MediCare pays for a variety of health care needs but is limited to the amount of home care people receive. This can be an issue for many. “We visit the home to offer help and solutions. We charge nothing. It’s a free service”, Doug added. Former resident, CeCe Wind said, “It was a wonderful experience when I stayed at Western Slope, and the care and compassion continues now that I am at home. I love that Doug checks on me.” Marshall Hospital has partnered with Western Slope to ensure Quality Health Care. “We ensure when patients are released from Marshall to Western Slope that we continue to follow the Plans of Care put into place and continue those plans when they return home,” Carole Mann continues, “Being able to wonderfully enrich and serve our community is what it’s all about.”

editor’s note I remember being twenty-something and my parents gifting me with a “souvenir” from their trip to Seattle. Expecting a keychain or maybe a mug from the original Starbucks, I unwrapped a neon pink T-shirt screen-printed with a skeleton sitting on a park bench; across the front were the words: Still Waiting For Mr. Right. You see, I always had an idea of the person I would marry—someone quirky, cultured and kind-hearted who came from a good family; someone who would sweep me off my feet, keep me on my toes and put me into silent-laugh mode—but this mystery man of mine was nowhere in sight. My parents had clearly lost hope, but the romantic in me had not. I knew he would eventually come along, and until that time came, I vowed to kiss a lot of toads and work on bettering myself. And if it turned out I was that skeleton down the road? I wasn’t terribly concerned, because life with friends and family by my side was pretty great. But alas, “Mr. Right” arrived…when I was living with my folks and working a post-college minimum-wage job. Falling in love was the last thing on my mind; I was more concerned with landing my dream job and getting the heck out of my childhood b e d r o o m . B u t l ov e had other plans, and it’s been a journey filled with adventure, laughter and craziness ever since. February, the month of love, is one of my favorites. Whether you’re single or married, Valentine’s Day is a perfect time to show appreciation for those you adore most, whether it be a pal, pet, —Paulo Coelho parent or partner. In this month’s issue, we have a handful of articles dedicated to doing just that. First off, in The 10 Spot, Tara Mendanha takes us through local date ideas that are bound to get your heart pumping in more ways than one. In Swag, Sabrina Gonzalez had the lucky task of shopping till she dropped to find “Gifts That Say ‘I Love You.’” And in Health & Wellness, Kourtney Jason talks birds and the bees with “7 Reasons to Have More Sex.” I don’t know about you, but if getting busy fights the flu and improves empathy, then I’m all in. No matter your current relationship status, remember that the most important person to love, though oftentimes the hardest, is yourself—so take a moment to acknowledge your own inner awesomeness…today and every day. Cheers! — Megan megan@stylemg.com

What’s the worst (or best) date you’ve ever been on? The best date I ever had was when my now husband and I went to Disneyland on our first Valentine's Day together. It was a surprise and lots of fun!—Kristen Back when we were first dating, my then boyfriend wanted to impress me, so he took me to a French restaurant and ordered beef bourguignon. Only he pronounced it beef borginny. The waiter looked at him with such disdain. I never said anything to him about it—at least not until after we got married…35 years ago! We never went back to that restaurant; he stuck to places where he could say “burger and fries.”—Debra

On a first (and last) date with someone I met online, I walked right by the guy because he looked nothing like his posted pics—not even if you squinted. Looks of course aren't everything, but honesty sure is!—Heather In college, I took a girl I really liked hiking. Cathy. Ostensibly, we were only going as friends, having several mutual friends between us, including Benjamin, who told me I was perfect for her. When we reached the top, there was a hiker registry. I put down my name and the date then stepped away while she went over to it. After, I went back to add a clever comment to mine, but stopped when I saw what she’d written: Her name, a plus sign and "Benjamin"—all written inside a big, fluffy heart.—Tom I went on a date with an old boyfriend years ago and was introducing him to my mom. During the whole dinner, he didn't ask her one question and barely said anything to her. It was at that point I knew he wasn’t worth dating!— Kourtney I met a guy in college who was “from Australia,” and we started dating. I was enamored with his accent and knowledge of didgeridoos, and he seemed nice enough— until we were out to dinner and he confessed to being born and raised in America. Between the lie and lack of an accent, he wasn’t as charming, and I said “g’bye, mate” immediately—Megan

ask the experts Is it too late for a middle-aged person to start learning an instrument? Anyone—even those in their 70s and 80s—can start to play an instrument at any point in their life. Many middleaged people bring their children in for lessons and then decide to take up an instrument for the first time. Age has no bearing when it comes to learning how to play music. It’s never too late and is really fun; it’s called “play” for a reason. Music is the soundtrack to our lives. How often should I replace my mattress? Are there certain signs to look out for?
Violin player photo © Jenny Sturm/fotolia.com. Girl sleeping photo © Ljupco Smokovski/fotolia.com.
There are several indicators it may be time to replace your mattress. First, do an inventory: C o m f o r t . D o y o u h a v e pressure in your shoulders, hips or back? Are you having temperature issues, needing to kick your feet out from under the covers frequently?

Condition. Does the mattress have the proverbial two dips and a hump? If so, it's unlikely you’re receiving proper support.
BEFORE
Health. If you have conditions that affect your sleep such as sleep apnea, acid reflux or lower back injuries, then changing your mattress has the potential to aid in symptom relief. Hygiene. We spend more time in bed than anywhere else, so hygienically they should be replaced about every 10 years. Above all, listen to your body. Many conventional mattresses do not make it to that 10-year mark, and suffering through months or years of an unsupportive mattress can affect your overall quality of life. Judy Collinsworth Judy Collinsworth has fond memories of Historic Folsom. As a child, she and her family would do their shopping there, and if it was an especially good day, she’d even get an ice cream cone. “We came here quite a bit,” she shares. “It’s just a charming little town.” These days, Collinsworth is the district manager for the Folsom Historic District Association (FHDA) and is thrilled to have the opportunity to help preserve it for future generations to enjoy. What started as a part-time business soon expanded to a full-time job, and when the position with the FHDA opened up, she knew it’d be a good fit. In her new role, Collinsworth plans many

The Folsom Zoo offers Storytime at 10:30 a.m. on the fourth Thursday of ever y month—featuring special animal puppets and an introduction to a live animal—while the Folsom Sports Complex offers Little Friends Open Gym, a drop-in playtime for preschoolers from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays.
For 20 years, excellent teachers have made this program—which follows the FCUSD instructional calendar (except staff development days) and includes daily activities like small-group stations, arts and crafts, carpet time for songs and stories, outdoor exercise, and a snack break—so popular. Classes for four-ye ar-olds are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and Tuesdays and Thursdays for three-year-olds; classrooms are located at the Folsom Community Center and at the Folsom Sports Complex. Theme days, holiday celebrations, and occasional off-site field trips are held throughout the year.
KINDERGARTEN READINESS
The Hinkle Creek Nature Center provides a unique setting for this program whose curriculum is focused on preparing students for grade school with social and academic skills. Ms. Aileen encourages kindness in the classroom, and helps students become good citizens as they learn academic skills like pre-reading, alphabet sequence and phonics, plus verbalization of facts and concepts. Classes are held Monday through Thursday each week starting in September and Visit the classrooms while learning continuing through more about Fun Factor y and May; students Kindergarten Readiness at an Open must turn four by House on March 1 from 4-6 p.m. September 1 to Registration for the 2017 school register.

Sick with a nagging cough and sore throat that I just couldn’t shake, and without a primary care doctor on speed dial, I pulled into Folsom’s Sutter Urgent Care Center on my lunch break, and was seen and treated in under 40 minutes. Opening on December 12, the 3,700-squarefoot space lacks the sterile ambiance of many medical facilities—thanks in part to a bright, welcoming waiting room that’s beautified by big windows, a flat-screen TV and framed art showcasing local landmarks. Equipped with eight exam rooms, two observation areas, an on-site laboratory and several clinicians who serve patients seven days a week, 365 days a year, it makes going to the doctor as painless as possible. “With extended and weekend hours, [this center] provides an excellent complement to the care patients receive from their primary care and specialty providers,” notes Urgent Care Department Chief and Sutter Medical Group physician Robert Bixler, MD, who adds that it’s a faster, convenient and economical alternative to going to the ER for non-life threatening illnesses and injuries. What’s more, approximate wait times are updated regularly at sutterhealth. org/urgentcare, ensuring you can plan a visit accordingly. The center is sited inside Sutter Medical Foundation’s Folsom Medical Plaza, where plans are in the works to fill the building with additional Sutter clinicians in family medicine, cardiology, pediatrics and more— essentially making the plaza a one-stop shop for all your health care needs. —Megan Wiskus

Criminal Rock A Fine-Tuned Family
by HEATHER L. BECKER
Criminal Rock is a family affair—dad Brian Cowan II is on drums and vocals; daughter Emma on bass, keys and vocals; and son Tre on guitar. The trio’s mix of sounds—which sway between hard and classic rock, punk and metal—can often be heard at Sacramento’s Old Ironsides. “We share a musical chemistry that I seldom share with other musicians,” says Brian. “Any of us can start playing a riff or groove, and the others will have something awesome going over top immediately; it’s like we can read each other’s minds!” photos by DANTE FONTANA FEBRUARY 2017 // stylefedh.com

the arts
HLB: WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND CRIMINAL ROCK? BC: In 2006, Josh, a bassist from [my former band] Hammer Down, and I started a new project and named it Criminal Rock. The name was based on the lyrics from the song “Rock and Roll Outlaw” by one of our favorite bands Clutch. I liked it, since it could have different meanings for different people. In 2012, Josh moved back to Arizona, and I needed some new players [so I could] continue to jam and play shows. Emma and Tre, who were 13 and 11 at the time, had been watching for years and learning to play, so it was a natural evolution.
Emma
HLB: DO YOU EVER GET ARTIST’S BLOCK OR STAGE FRIGHT? TC: Sometimes I get nervous when performing, but it always goes away after the first song or two. When I’m writing stuff by myself, I sometimes get to a spot where I can’t think of a good riff or bridge, but then I get up, take a break, and think about what I have so far until I come up with something good. EC: When I come up with different song ideas but can’t think of another part to complete the song, I’ll play with the band and usually one of us will come up with the last part. BC: Originally the kids learned to play a lot of the songs I wrote. Over time and as they progressed, they began to come up with more riffs and songs on their own, and I would just put a beat to it and help structure the song. Mainly we just jam, and cool things happen. HLB: ARE THERE CHALLENGES WORKING WITH FAMILY? BC: The biggest challenge is our health. Emma and I both have Crohn’s disease and my wife has multiple sclerosis. When Emma was hospitalized last spring, we had to cancel a show. In the hospital, a music therapist brought in instruments and after hearing Emma play the piano asked if we’d perform unplugged for the children there. They got to February 24 – FreeFall Gala. When Emma and Tre are old enough, we’d like to play at more venues around the area. Opening up for Clutch would be a dream come true! reverbnation.com/criminalrock

Let’s Get Physical by KOURTNEY JASON
Turn on Marvin Gaye because it’s time to get it on.* We all know sex is a fun form of exercise and can reduce stress, improve your mood and lower blood pressure; but fortunately for you, that’s not where the health benefits end. Here, our experts divulge the naughty truth.
1
A Healthy Heart
According to Karla Alberts, ND, at Revolutions Naturopathic in Folsom, “There are a plethora of physical and protective benefits to reap from this innate act of love. Heart health is much improved from a more optimized balance in hormones, a decrease in systemic inflammation, and a lowering of blood pressure.”
2
Fight the Flu
“Research has shown that those who engage in more frequent intercourse have stronger immune systems,” Alberts says. Thanks to increased levels of immunoglobin A, you’ll be better equipped to fight off germs and prevent illness.

3
Deeper Sleep
Nichole Tyson, MD, OB/GYN at Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center, and an expert in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, says that in addition to reducing pain and relieving headaches, sex also aids in improving sleep. After sex, prolactin—a relaxation-inducing hormone— is released, which can help with a more restful slumber.
4
Live Longer
“A Welsh study that followed 918 men aged 4559 for 10 years found that those who had two or more orgasms per week had 50 percent fewer instances of mortality than those who had low or no incidence of sexual activity,” Tyson says. “A similar study followed 252 people in North Carolina for 25 years. At follow-up, men who reported having frequent intercourse lived

significantly longer than those who didn’t. Research like this is done more often on men because [their incidence of heart disease] is higher. One study on women did find that those who reported enjoying their sexual encounters over the years lived longer than females who didn’t.”
5
Look and Feel Better
6
Improves Empathy
“Some other, smaller studies have shown [having sex] helps in these areas: looking younger, stronger mu s c l e t o n e, i m p rov e d memory, chronic pain relief, increased immune markers, and reduced prostate cancer,” Tyson says.
Je n n i f e r B a l l e r i n i , PsyD, a licensed psychologist and couple’s therapist at LifeWork Psychotherapy Center in Fair Oaks, says having sex helps increase levels of the hormone oxytocin, “which researchers call ‘the cuddle hormone’ and promotes closeness and bonding between partners, leaves you calm and blissful, and reduces signs of anxiety and depression by suppressing the stress hormone cortisol...Oxytocin also improves empathy, helps us stay faithful to our partners (and keep our distance from attractive folks who aren’t our partners), helps sleep, fosters generosity, crystallizes fond memories, reduces drug cravings, and lots of other good stuff.”
7
A Better Relationship
Good sex deepens a strong bond, and a strong bond takes sex to another level, Ballerini says. “Sex, like empathy and attentiveness, is one of the most important aspects of a happy, healthy relationship,” she says. “A lot of us fear getting tired of the same partner for years at a time, but if the emotional connection is there, we never grow numb to the sexual spark we feel with our sweethearts. In short, how we connect sexually is how we connect emotionally. So, if you want great sex, work at building a great relationship!” *All of these experts remind you to love responsibly.

After years as an A-list side man with John Lee Hooker, John Mayall, and Canned Heat, Walter Trout has enjoyed playing his emotional brand of fired-up, hardcore guitar heavy music, writing and recording his own songs for over 20 years as a solo artist. On “ALIVE in Amsterdam,” released in June 2016, Trout has never sounded so alive. Last summer he blew the roof off venues from Royal Albert Hall to Buddy Guy’s Legends club in Chicago. NEW TO THE COMMUNITY As a school resource officer for the Folsom Police Department, James Dorris has the unique opportunity to shape young minds within his community—an influence he makes the most of with Fighting for Fitness, a free afterschool boxing program dedicated to promoting discipline, self-respect and academic achievement among middle and high school students. Dorris, who holds three national boxing titles, founded the program seven years ago to help combat the bullying epidemic that continues to plague schools. “I have learned that bullying peaks in middle school. I have seen how [it] affects kids in a horrible way,” he shares. “The cause is personal to me, because the sport has blessed me in a positive way. I know that learning the art will help each student develop self-esteem.” Stopbullying.gov—an online resource focused on providing information from government agencies about bullying, including best practices for prevention and response—reports that bullying is linked to an array of negative outcomes in children and teens, including substance abuse and suicide. And the effects aren’t limited to perpetrators a n d v i c t i m s. E v e n bystanders are more likely to miss or skip school and may be at an increased risk for mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. “I explain to the kids that this world is filled with good and evil,” Dorris says. “There are sheep—those who live their lives peacefully and would only hurt each other by accident; there are wolves—those who want to steal from the sheep, bully the sheep, hurt the sheep or even kill the sheep, and would sacrifice a sheep’s life to save his own; and there are sheep dogs—those who protect and fight for the sheep, [and] will sacrifice his or her life to save a sheep.” When they join Fighting for Fitness, each of Dorris’ students take an oath to be a sheep dog. “While they learn the art of boxing and become fit,” he explains, “they [also] develop a family and team atmosphere amongst their peers.” Funding for the program is provided by the Folsom Police Foundation, which raises money for charitable projects throughout the City of Folsom, many of which focus on impacting the lives of at-risk youth. “This program has helped me develop a rapport with the kids,” Dorris shares, “and opened my eyes on the potential each one of these kids has.” folsompolicefoundation.org/endeavors

This Greek-inspired home was a new build. While the owners’ tastes were modern, they wanted a home that would feel comfortable in a traditionally styled neighborhood. Architect Dave Piches took inspiration from the white, clean-lined homes in Greece to create a residence that blends modern and traditional styling. Sited on a crest above the Sunset Whitney area of Rocklin, it has cascading planters at the front, and a stunning, intimate rear pool and patio that overlooks a South-facing view of Sacramento.

STYLISH BARN VERNACULAR ARCHITECT: Dave Piches LOCATION: Penryn YEAR BUILT: 2015
SIZE: 3,000 Square Feet; 3 Bedrooms,
2 Bathrooms
STYLE & INSPIRATION: This addition and remodel
was built for a homeowner who had memories of living in Europe as a child. He loved the verticality of the castle spaces and wanted to add a tower to his one-story home. “Our challenge was to design an addition with a tower that would be appropriate in the setting of the bucolic Placer foothills, while blending easily with the one-story proportions of the existing home,” says Piches, explaining that the resulting “barn-inspired tower structure” steps down to the existing lower one-story roof with board and batt siding and a metal roof, which brings continuity to the new and existing parts of the home. The new entry features a stone-walled courtyard, which boasts an outdoor fireplace and sitting area.
AMENITIES: The home includes a great room, a new recreation room, a gym, a main floor library and a home office in the tower.

LUXURY MOUNTAIN
ARCHITECT: David Wright LOCATION: Pollock Pines YEAR BUILT: 2011 SIZE: 2,500 Square Feet; 2 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms
STYLE & INSPIRATION: This residence is situated on a steep rural site overlooking the south side of the South Fork of the American River, an area heavily wooded with pine, fir and cedar forest. Built in modern international-style architecture, the three-story home is an efficient structural module that uses structural-insulated panels (SIPs). The house also has a rooftop entertainment terrace, which minimizes its footprint on a steep mountain hillside. The owners are audiophiles, so the two-story interior living volume is acoustically tuned and balanced. Since the owner is a zip line enthusiast, there are two separate zip lines along the mountain hillside. AMENITIES: A four-story elevator allows easy access for all to each level. Home details include a tiled rooftop view entertainment terrace, complete with a rooftop spa, barbecue, fireplace and an outdoor dining area. Extensive glass windows maximize the view and reflect the stunning surrounding forest. “The exterior materials are designed to be fireproof, low maintenance and durable in snowy, freezing conditions,” says Wright, noting the home can easily be heated with the fireplace—blending “charm and efficiency.” The outside boasts low-maintenance, high durability cement/wood fiber, horizontal lap siding and vertical corrugated “corten” (a rustfinished sheet metal).

Keeping with the rugged Australian outback theme, the exterior walls are finished in rustic stone with stucco. Wright says the home is “suitable to the hot summers and cold winters of the Sierra Nevada foothills” and fits well into the ranch house subdivision environment. Design wise, the inside features exposed wood beams and ceilings and cabinetry that complements the natural materials on the outside. Citizen Vine
Tapa the World
by JENNIFER RESNICKE // photos by DANTE FONTANA
Sutter Street has always been one of my favorite spots for a relaxed evening out. Although it was too cold to do much meandering on my last trip, I happily landed at one of the area’s newer wine bars, Citizen Vine, whose ambiance I instantly warmed to. The exposed red brick exterior is eye-catching, and the interior is simple, slightly industrial chic and neutral. Three cozy black couches toward the front create an atmosphere reminiscent of a trendy friend’s living room, while a handful of wood tables Chipotle Mac and Cheese with and plenty of chairs bellied up to the Bacon Parmesan bar are ideal for enjoying tasty tapas, Panko Crust friendly conversation and delicious wine. Speaking of which, the wine list is seriously impressive—boasting everything from local to international pours by the bottle or glass—but even better is the fact that the staff are happy to talk you through each selection. When I mentioned my husband and I were ready for a little

adventure, they were all too happy to oblige. We started by choosing to do “Dinner at the Vine,” which includes two glasses of wine (or a bottle on Wednesdays), three tapas of your choice, and dessert. Our wine selections came out quickly, and we even got an extra taste of our server’s favorite sip, which immediately won us over too. The Roasted Brussels Sprouts Tortilla Flatbread arrived soon after with an incredibly thin and crispy crust that allowed the garlic cream sauce,

respectable amount of melty mozzarella, bacon and caramelized sprouts to truly shine. Next up were Chinese BBQ Sliders, served three up on pillow-soft rolls. Filled with sweet and tender pulled pork in a delicious homemade barbecue sauce alongside sesame ginger slaw—with just the right amount of vinegar to counteract the fruity addition of pineapple chunks—

our only gripe was wishing there were three more. Chilly weather called for the Chipotle Mac and Cheese with Bacon Parmesan Panko Crust. Presented in a cast-iron skillet, it arrived piping hot with perfectly chewy noodles, and was incredibly smoky, sur pr isingly spicy, and erred on the side of milky as opposed to being overly tacky.
Be sure to save room for dessert—the Mountain Dew Apple Dumpling with Maker's Mark-infused caramel drizzle and vanilla bean ice cream left us sweetly satisfied until the final forkful.

Willow Sweetery // Earlier last year, the one and only Willow Sweetery—tucked along Folsom Bouelvard—made a shift from being a
sit-down café to solely focusing on the sweet side of things. This was a great decision, for as soon as you enter, their extensive bakery emits a sweet aroma
I’ve only experienced at my grandma’s house. On a recent visit, the baked goods (all gluten-free!) behind the glass looked as good as they smelt, making it near impossible to decide what to order. After a few minutes of contemplation, I settled on a Cinnamon Streusel Muffin and Hot Chocolate. I’ve always been very particular about my muffins—for my grandma has set a high standard—but this one exceeded all my expectations. The top (aka, the best part) was pure cinnamon-sugary-crumbly goodness while the inside was moist and warm, putting the sweet in “Sweetery.” To prevent myself from practically inhaling the confection—which, despite its gluten-free label, definitely wasn’t flavor-free—I sipped the rich cup of cocoa. Upon finishing the perfect pairing, I could have gone for more but decided to wait until the next time I needed a tasty pick-me-up, which just so happened to be the following day. TASTE // SIP ON THIS
DARK CHOCOLATE CAKE + RED WINE SYRUP Do you need a girlfriend to drink and eat wine with? Yes, I said “eat.” This chocolate cake has a pronounced wine flavor (but not too much), and the sweet red wine syrup on top is just, well, the icing on the cake. Plus, it’s an excellent way to use the dark cocoa powder in your pantry. While I love this dark chocolate cake with its subtle wine flavor, I love the red wine syrup the most. I’m already dreaming up new ways to use it. Would my morning bowl of oatmeal be acceptable? Please say yes.
Sweet & Simple: Desserts for Two by Christina Lane (The Countryman Press, 2017, $27.95)
1/3 cup neutral oil 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/3 cup red wine FOR THE RED WINE SYRUP 3/4 cup red wine 2 tbsp. granulated sugar
Preheat the oven to 350-degrees Fahrenheit and line a six-inch cake pan with a small circle of parchment paper. Spray the exposed sides of the pan with cooking spray. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, oil and vanilla. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir

gently until mixed, adding the wine about halfway through. Pour the batter into the pan and bake on a baking sheet for 30 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out mostly clean, with a few crumbs clinging to it. If you under-bake the cake, it will sink as it cools. Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, make the wine syrup: Combine the wine and sugar in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil until reduced to two or three tablespoons, about 15 minutes. Remove the cake from the pan and place on a serving plate. Slice and serve with the red wine syrup drizzled on top. Makes one, 6-inch cake. PAIRS WITH...
This month, Style staffers tested out two offerings from West Sacramento’s Strad Meadery. Founded in 2011, they use honey to facilitate the fermentation process and create four different varieties of “mead”—thought to be the oldest alcoholic drink known to man. For more info, visit stradmead.com.
Strad Meadery Traditional Nectar Mead ABV: 7.5% OVERALL RATING: 3 TASTING NOTES: Mild and sweet flavor, almost like sparkling apple juice; slightly bubbly and tart; would be a great dessert wine; light, easy to drink; smells like champagne with a hint of honey PRICE: $14.99 PURCHASE: Whole Foods Market
Strad Meadery Pomegranate Nectar Mead ABV: 7.5% OVERALL RATING: 4 TASTING NOTES: Light, crisp and refreshing; beautiful orangish-red color that’s reminiscent of rosé; easy to drink; a lovely halfway point between a cider and white wine; mildly sweet for a honey wine and not too acidic on the finish PRICE: $14.99 PURCHASE: Whole Foods Market
OVERALL RATING is the average score (out of 5) compiled by Style staff tasters. Ratings should should be taken with a grain of salt, as we are by no means “experts”—just hard-working employees who enjoy imbibing.
AMADOR BREWING COMPANY’S NIGHT HIKE PORTER ABV: 7.3% IBU: 46
Pairing beer and dessert is still quite unusual for some, but Amador Brewing Company’s Night Hike Porter is one of my favorites and may change your mind. It’s a mix between an American and Baltic porter, giving it a slightly roasted flavor with hints of dark fruit. Topped with a minty hop character, notes of citrus and an extremely clean finish, it doesn’t overpower the richness of this delectable dessert.—Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles Restaurant & Pub

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
Jeuvani is a small business dedicated to the average person who desires above-average results. We develop individualized treatment plans for interested clients and feel that we can help everyone— no matter their gender or age—feel better about their skin and appearance, while boosting their confidence. We’re committed to providing amazing results at prices that are affordable, and to developing lasting relationships with clients. Thanks to our small staff, clients have the ability to get to know all of us and feel confident about the services we offer.
I'm a mom of four boys—all very close in age—and started my business based on a product concept; I wanted to keep my kids’ teething toys and pacifiers off the ground and prevent loss.
Why is your staff the best in the business? We offer the same, or better, technology and techniques as surgical offices, but with prices that many can afford. We offer many different methods to achieve beautiful skin—from chemicals and laser to topical and injectable products. There’s a reason why we have a five-star rating!
What life accomplishments are you most proud of? My amazing medical career and incredible children.
Who is your role model in business or in life and why? Without question, the most amazing person I’ve ever known is my mother. She’s 82 years old and still working full-time. She taught me the value of hard work and devotion to career while maintaining superior standards in parenting. To this day, I turn to her for advice in every facet of my life. She is generous, kind, wise and dedicated to bettering this universe. I feel privileged to be her daughter.
What was the first job you ever had? I was a tanning salon employee at El Dorado Hills Sun Spa.
How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I help a lot with Jackson Elementary School’s PTO and am very active in Sunday church—teaching classes and working with the youth.
Where do you go when the going gets tough? The gym, Orangetheory Fitness Folsom, or the reflexology spa.
What’s your hidden talent? Baking cupcakes and making salted caramel.
What’s your biggest job perk? Taking pictures of lots of babies.
What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Mexquite, Sky Sushi, Smashburger, and Sutter Street Steakhouse. Where do you and your family go locally to have fun? My boys love the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary.
What's your biggest job perk?
What’s your favorite local business other than your own?
Practicing on each other and seeing amazing results, as we each learn and grow with cosmetic medicine and the latest products and techniques. We love keeping each other beautiful.
Nugget Markets.
And finally, customer service is…? Treating people better than I would treat myself.

Know Thy Neighbor Conversing to Create Community
I went to a memorial recently. It was for a neighbor. He lived at the end of our street for years. Craig. An ironworker. Nice guy. Divorced. Lived by himself. When he first moved in, we talked regularly, mostly about what country concerts were coming up or fishing, which he loved to do. I told him we’d go out in my boat sometime. But, we never did. And in late November he passed away. I knew he’d gotten hurt on Catch Tom on the Pat and Tom Morning the job a few years ago and wasn’t working Show on New anymore. I knew he’d become reclusive. I Country 105.1, email him at tnvmailey@ hadn’t see much of him the last two years gmail.com, or follow him on Twitter or so. But it was a shock. He was only 57. @kncitom. At the memorial, I learned more about Craig than I had in the 12 years he’d lived WHAT’S COMING NEXT MONTH? not 25 yards away. He grew up in Chico, Don’t miss Style’s “Flavor Town: 25+ was a high school football and baseball Local Eats and player. Quite a stud, when he was younger. Drinks.” Great storyteller...funny...likable—that was a word used over and over. So likable.

Nicest guy you’d ever want to know. He loved NASCAR and the Miami Dolphins. I learned that, as an ironworker, pretty much any Motel 6 with a stairway built in the past 30 years in Northern California was worked on by Craig, and he was quite proud of that. He loved his kids—you could see that in onscreen images that flashed during a tribute. He loved his friends—you could see that by the number of them in attendance. Heck, two ex-wives and an ex-girlfriend were there. Likeable. I learned the reason he became more withdrawn was a struggle with alcohol, which was exacerbated by his injury. Ultimately, both played a part in his passing. I feel like if I’d made an effort to get to know him better, to be a better neighbor, that maybe, in some way, a difference could have been made…? I don’t know. But I wish I had. A few years before all this, another neighbor passed away. Yvonne. An elderly but spry, tiny little white-haired lady originally from France. She lived one house over. She had a delightful singsong accent and never failed to greet you with a smile and hello as she went for one of her daily walks. She kept cookies by her door for the neighbor kids. We attended the same church, and if we weren’t there on a given Sunday, she’d ask where we were. She kept her yard immaculate and drove a sweet late model sky-blue Toyota Avalon all over Roseville. I always wanted to invite her over—she grew up in France during World War II. My dad served there. I wanted to share some of his stories, and hear hers. I never did. But I wish I had. At her memorial, I learned she was part of the French Resistance, that she helped Jews and others in danger from Nazi occupation escape via an underground railroad of sorts. She was a courier, riding her bike past enemy soldiers with baskets full of groceries. Missives and messages were hidden in the groceries; the soldiers never suspected that a young teenage girl could be so bold or so brave. She never got caught. She was a badass. We are all so much more than we appear on the surface. We all have stories. And in this day and age, when it’s easier than ever to metaphorically pull into our collective garages and close the door behind us, I think it’s important to remember that. It’s on all of us to reach out to each other, to go beyond just waving hello or making small talk. To really get to know one another. Because we’re all neighbors. It’s worth a try.
