“
I
’m pretty aware that the pursuit of perfection is, inherently, a flawed concept.” I have to agree with these words spoken by the great English rugby player Jonny Wilkinson. Even an athlete as great as he admits our limitations as humans. So while I ponder the prevalence of society’s voracious appetite to attain perfection, I can’t help but become mentally exhausted as I meaGood, Better, Best. sure myself against the messages championing perfect everything. They inundate and bombard my daily life, at every turn: magazine covers, billboards, TV commercials, movies and red carpets. Perfect legs, perfect butt, perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect abs, perfect teeth, perfect posture… and the checklist goes on. Is this the point where I throw my hands up feeling defeated by an aging body? Wise folks answer with the proverbial “Nobody’s perfect.” So, I try to see it this way: It’s good to be better, and best if you continue trying to be. We might not achieve that mythical notion of perfection, but at least we can bring balance to our health—both mentally and physically—by challenging our selves to live a better life, not a perfect one (doesn’t exist, remember!). This month, we give you plenty of motivation for pledging to be a better you in 2015. Give it your best shot! — Desiree

Q:
I’d like to learn the art of beer tasting. What’s the best way to get started?
In Dentistry
A:
First, don’t get overwhelmed with beer when you begin tasting, and remember that it’s what you like that matters. I would recommend going to a bar that offers flights and getting four different styles of beer. Write down what you like and don’t like. Next time, try a different flight of beer and do the same so you can get an idea of what your taste buds favor. Once you find a style you like, start tasting different brands in that style—that’s when it really gets fun! Remember: It’s what you like, not what’s trendy or high scoring. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to beer. —Richard Righton, Owner 36 Handles 1010 White Rock Road El Dorado Hills 916-941-3606, 36handles.com

mattress means you’re probably dissatisfied with your current one. Do an inventory: • Comfort (do you have pressure in your shoulders, hips or back?) • Condition (does the mattress have the proverbial two dips and a hump? If so, it’s unlikely you’re receiving proper support) • Hygiene (we spend more time in bed than anywhere else, so hygienically they should be replaced about every 10 years) Box springs tend to be paired with the specific mattress make and model and may not offer adequate support with a different mattress construction; plus, many manufacturers will void your warranty if you don’t use their foundation. —Caitlin Siegle, Sales Associate European Sleep Design 6606 Folsom Auburn Road, Suite 5 Folsom 916-989-8909 sleepdesign.com

l Dorado Hills resident Cindy Sample is the author of the Laurel McKay books, a series of awardwinning novels that explore the humorous side of the mystery genre. Her most recent offering is Dying for a Dude, the fourth book in the series, and Sample has no plans to stop any time soon. Yet she didn’t take the most conventional route to becoming a best-selling author—Sample loved mystery novels as a child, but for over 15 years she worked as the CEO of a national mortgage banking company. Working full-time as a CEO and mom of two didn’t leave much time for writing, so one day Sample decided enough was enough. She put down her briefcase, picked up a pen, and the rest is history.
14 stylefedh.com - January 2015
When she isn’t writing, Sample is a popular motivational speaker, and many of her lectures address the importance of following one’s dreams. In addition, she often volunteers her time to speak at fundraisers for local nonprofits, such as the Assistance League of Sierra Foothills. She’s an especially avid supporter of programs that support literacy throughout Northern California; she also participates in “Authors on the Move,” a gala that raises funds for the Sacramento Public Library. Sample knows firsthand the impact reading can have on a person’s life. “Books are a wonderful way for us to escape, to learn,” she explains. “People don’t always realize what a joy reading can be.” — Amber Foster

Meet Macaque Kayli
as it love at first sight? Possibly. Lovely female macaque, Kayli, and handsome Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary resident, Wallace, were both born in spring of 2006 at research facilities. Wallace has lived at the Zoo since October 2006. Although the recent passing of his longtime roommate saddened all, Kayli’s arrival—in September 2014—instantly lifted everyone’s spirits. The monkeys were separated for several days to provide adjustment time. As Kayli carefully checked out her surroundings, she investigated the primate night house, studied the sky, climbed up and down from perches, and people-watched. Now the monkeys spend all their time doing these things together. Being a smart primate, Kayli has noticed that Wallace is willing to spend hours grooming her fur; apparently the word “reciprocate” is not a word she recognizes, however. — Roberta Ratcliff

I
Firehouse Subs
magine a simple sandwich without bells and whistles; only bread and meat—just as God intended for it to be. That sandwich would have to be pretty darn good to survive in this chaotic, complicated and over-condimented world. Well, I found one that is: the New York Steamer at Firehouse Subs. Made on lightly toasted white or wheat bread, this sub has some of the juiciest meat you’ll ever eat. Imagine thin ribbons of steaming hot corned beef brisket and pastrami
that’s piled high on fresh, soft bread with dashes of deli mustard, Italian dressing, and a blanket of melted provolone cheese, with a kosher dill pickle on the side. Now imagine biting into it and regaining your faith in sandwiches. As if that lifechanging moment wasn’t enough, if you’re a hot sauce fan, hang on to your helmets—they have over 50 of them that are rated in order of “heat index” to determine what’s hot and what’s not. Try them if you dare, but be prepared to put out some fires! Founded by firemen, Firehouse Subs is a favorite to many who come to enjoy the quality food, excellent service and ambience of camaraderie and courage. Low on gas, energy or life in general? Firehouse Subs welcomes you to stop by and “fill your engines.” Firehouse Subs, 1001 East Bidwell Street, Folsom. 916-984-0600, firehousesubs.com. — Tara Mendanha

My vote goes to the Chicken Cutlet Parmigiana Hero from Dominick’s Italian Market & Deli. The house-made bread is chewy and firm; the breaded chicken cutlet is tender; the marinara sauce is messy; and the whole thing oozes cheese. L
ocal landscapes and seascapes have always created a peaceful space within artist Mary Lou Dales, and she strives to give others that same experience through her paintings. Although her art didn’t take center stage until she was laid-off from the corporate world, she’s now an avid artist and mem26 stylefedh.com - January 2015
ber of the Folsom Arts Association, Sacramento Fine Arts Center, and the Center for Contemporary Art Sacramento.
HLB: Describe the dream-like quality in your paintings? MLD: It seems that life in general is just too crazy; we all have too many things to
do, places to be and deadlines to meet. I hope to create a little relief—a place where we can remember that quiet feeling we get when we experience the pleasure of seeing something beautiful. When looking at my paintings, I hope it stops [the viewer]— even if just for a moment—and creates that much-needed quiet.
HLB: Why acrylics? MLD: It’s not very romantic, but I started working with acrylics because of my allergies and fell in love with their versatility. I can apply them thick so they look like oils, or thin so they look like watercolors or inks. Just don’t get them on your clothes; once hardened, they’re there for life!
HLB: Would you have done anything differently? MLD: No. Things come as they are supposed to come, in the time they are supposed to come in. I’m very excited about this new stage—it’s a very rewarding time. I love creating and seeing viewers’ reactions to my paintings. After many different careers in the corporate world, I can now say I want to be an artist when I grow up, and here I am…lucky me!
Shadow Ranch Pond Red Tail Hunting Easy Seat
HLB: When are you most inspired? MLD: I literally find inspiration everywhere. Walking out to the car in the morning and seeing a small white flower on a bush makes me stop and try to figure out how to make it work in a painting; simply seeing the flower makes me happy, and I want to share that feeling.
HLB: Who or what’s been your biggest influence? MLD: My painting life started after I was downsized. My original training was to be an educator, and my undergrad led to a business degree. Both are left-brain majors, so I had to work and study to develop my creative right brain over the years. I’ve always loved art museums, as they offer a barrage of experiences. In the end, the impressionists and great masters are my favorites, and I think their influences can be seen in my work.
HLB: What’s in store for the future? MLD: The future is nothing but open to all opportunities. I will continue studying so that my work will improve and grow. Actually, I’ll never stop studying, as there’s always room for improvement. I will also continue to partake in local art shows, enter judged shows, and start looking for a local gallery. There’s no place to go but up.

get it right 7 Mistakes Parents of Teens Make by Linda Holderness
T
imes have changed. Dr. Spock’s classic childcare reference guided novice parents with advice on chicken pox, mumps and thin children—until the age of 12. After that? Parenting bewilderment presumably ended. Spock, who died in 1998, wouldn’t recognize the world today’s teens navigate. The latest edition that bears his name—one of more than 10,000 parenting books on amazon.com—extends to age 18 and covers such topics as “living with the media,” rap music and AIDS. How can today’s parents sift through so much information to help their youngsters become healthy, responsible and successful adults? To find out, we gave the question a twist and asked instead: What should parents not do? Two area licensed marriage and family therapists, Amanda Nugent Divine, clinical director of El Hogar Community Services, Inc., a nonprofit providing community mental health services, and Marianne Svendsen, with Placer County Counseling, offer these seven commonsense tips that address some fundamental mistakes many parents make.
3 / Don’t diss your spouse. A teen
6 / Let them make decisions.
identifies with both her parents, and when you bad-mouth one—whether you’re married or separated—your teen feels criticized, too. “Whatever is going on between the two of you, keep it between you,” Divine says.
“Making good decisions takes practice,” Svendsen says. Offer advice, but when you tell them what to do, it becomes about you rather than about them. And don’t rush to save them from consequences—kids learn from their mistakes.
4 / Raise the child you have, not the child you want. Celebrate who your child is. If you hoped for a star pitcher but your son prefers the violin, encourage him and enjoy the music. Celebrate your child’s strengths, Svendsen says, and don’t live vicariously through him.
5 / Discipline with consequences. Instead of issuing orders when your child has broken the rules, Svendsen advises, give her choices. “Ask, ‘what do you think should be your consequence?’” Then make the consequence fit the behavior. For example, if your child has stayed out too late with friends, ground her for a specified time.
7 / Be steadfast. No matter how many ways your daughter says she hates you; make sure she knows you love her—no matter what. “You can give your kids everything,” Svendsen says, “but if you don’t provide love and stability, if you’re not there for them, everything else is superficial.”

friends to giggle and gossip with, and so should you. “Parents who try to be their child’s best friend are exhibiting need, not love,” Divine says, “and that’s a big mistake.” Single parents often use their child as an emotional surrogate, while they should be pursuing their own lives. Don’t worry about not being liked— it’s temporary.
2 / Don’t miss the wonder of childhood. Let your kids have fun, Svendsen urges, and have fun with them. Don’t burden them with so many responsibilities and activities that they don’t have time to just be kids, and don’t demand they always be mature.

he Young Family* only walked through the doors of Folsom Cordova Community Partnership’s (FCCP) Family Resource Center because they were out of options. The father was unemployed, they’d been forced out of Southern California’s expensive housing market, and the mother was experiencing emotional distress. They’d never had to ask for government support before, but they needed food, diapers, transportation and health care. They left the Safety Net Services office with all that and the one thing they needed most: a sense of peace. “Our vision is to create a unified, selfsufficient community in which children and adults are achieving their greatest potential,” says Chris Clark, FCCP’s resource development manager. “We want to break generation cycles of poverty by giving people the tools and resources they need to get back on their feet and out on their own.” For an organization that has such a powerful impact on people’s lives, it also remains one of the most unknown. Although founded in 1992 as the Folsom 30 stylefedh.com - January 2015
Cordova Schools Foundation and serving children aged 0-5 exclusively, between 2005 and 2010 it expanded several times in order to provide more services to people of all ages throughout the community. The need was, and remains, clear. The local unemployment rate hovers around 10 percent, with more than 50 percent of Rancho Cordova children eligible to receive free or reduced-cost lunches. In an average year, FCCP’s Safety Net program serves more than 3,000 local families with: • Nearly 1,500 food boxes through its Fresh Food program • 16,000 diapers • Nearly $4,000 in emergency shelter assistance • More than $40,000 to prevent evictions and pay for utilities • Classes and resources to help people learn parenting and life skills. Importantly, however, FCCP is not about handouts. “Our goal is to help people become self-sufficient, not relying on public assistance, and we view our role in that process as one of a navigator,” Clark says.
Top (L to R): Karen Pantuj, Rozalia Melendez, Jasmine Hill Wilson and Patti Brush Bottom (L to R): Caylee Sanderson, Caleb Sanderson and Kylie Sanderson
“We provide the map, but our participants drive the car in order to meet their goals and aspirations.” There is no cost for FCCP’s services and anyone is eligible to request assistance (although most services are intended for low-income individuals and families). Costs are offset primarily through grant funding, along with private donations and two annual fund-raisers. Altogether, FCCP operates on an annual budget of around $2 million which, simply summarized, is used to empower people to achieve their life goals and become independent. If FCCP leaders could have one wish, it’d be that more people know about the program. “We’d like people to hear about our work and want to learn more,” Clark says. “We want people to get a fuller operation of what we do to help people find jobs, get off public assistance, become the best possible parents, and teach young people the tools they need to be successful, productive adults.”

ncreasingly, adults are becoming recognized as an underdiagnosed group with ADD or ADHD, particularly those with the inattentive type. Today’s newly recognized ADD adults were the “day dreamers” and “space cadets” in grade school, but grew up during a time when teachers only referred kids for testing who disrupted their class. Although many have become fairly successful adults, their relationships echo common struggles, including the ones below.
Q: I’m constantly reminding my ADD husband about appointments or tasks he forgets, but when I confront him he stares at me blankly and denies we had a conversation about it. How do I get him to listen? BOB: Similar to dreams forgotten within minutes of wakening,
Q: My ADD husband often feels distant when we sit down together for dinner. I try engaging him, but he responds with a mindless “uh huh.” How can I get him to engage? BOB: If you’re sometimes unable to engage your ADD spouse, it may be during a time his brain is literally “off.” People with ADD often describe feeling like they’re in a fog, and it can take a lot of energy to focus. Medication can significantly help their performance, presence and focus during the day, but you’ll likely still see his brain turn off in the evening. Try the scientific approach by gathering data to discover the best times to engage, and identify important factors that impact his ability to focus and engage. His physical needs (sleep, diet, medications, exercise, etc.), as well as emotional factors like stress, greatly 32 stylefedh.com - January 2015
impact his brain’s ability to focus. This information helps him take ownership of his own needs and health, de-personalizes his (lack of) response, adjusts expectations, and gives insight helpful in planning more conducive times to engage each other.
Q: My wife and I can’t seem to get ahead of our bills or debt. We’ve agreed to a budget, but she doesn’t stick to it. I’ve recently taken over bill paying, but she always manages to justify overspending. I’m afraid to confront her because she explodes whenever I bring up our finances. BOB: Impulsive behaviors associated with ADD in adults often show up through overspending and emotional outbursts. Creating a concrete structure can help you regain control of the household finances. It’s much easier to stick to your budget when you only deal in cash, or the “envelope system.” If the grocery envelope is $10 short—something goes back, but you don’t go into debt to buy that last item. Collaborate by paying bills together and refining your system each time, which keeps you both focused and accountable to the goals you agreed upon.

your conversations are only momentarily being held in his short-term memory; they won’t “stick” without his focused attention. If he’s in the middle of focusing intently on another thought, task, or running out the door when you approach him— he won’t remember. Make sure you have his attention by asking him to stop what he’s doing—just for a couple of minutes—to focus on your conversation. Engage him with eye contact, and ask to confirm what he heard. Clarify any discrepancies until you’re both satisfied that you’re understanding each other, and write down details you need him to remember on a shared calendar or master message board. Lastly, look for techniques that work, but don’t personalize lapses in memory.

anuary brings a fresh start and renewed hope for the year ahead. With the holidays behind us, now’s the perfect time to give your home the attention it needs to survive the season. Here are six “todos” to get your year off on the right foot.
1 / REFRESH Once the hustle and bustle of the holidays has passed, your home can feel a bit empty. Fight the winter blues by giving your abode a good cleaning and boosting comfort with candles, cozy throws, warm drinks and good music.
2 / ORGANIZE Did you receive new gadgets or appliances last year? Flip through that stack of old manuals and warranties—tossing out paperwork for stuff you no longer own—and send in forms to activate new warranties as needed. Store everything together in one binder or document box.
begin again 6 Homestyle Resolutions by Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID 4 / INSPECT
3 / SANITIZE Cold and flu season is at its height. Do what you can to keep illness at bay by regularly sanitizing often-handled surfaces. Tables and counters are obvious spots, but don’t miss areas like doorknobs, faucets, phones and other tech devices.
Get ahead of problems by carefully looking over your home’s exterior after each storm, especially keeping an eye out for tree limbs that have come down and any damage to your roof or siding; also, make sure rain gutters are free of debris.
have a friend or neighbor stop by to turn on your water to a trickle and cover your citrus trees. Find out where your home’s water shut-off valve is, if you don’t know already, so you can quickly turn it off if a pipe does burst. Lastly, change out the old batteries in all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
5 / PROTECT 6 / DONATE Instead of packing new holiday goodies into overstuffed closets and drawers, take a few minutes to edit out similar items to donate. This goes for linen and shoe closets, too. The lightened load will allow you to feel 2015 ready!

T
hese are a few of my favorite things: macadamia nut-crusted Brie, warm and spreadable; risotto fritters, crispy on the outside, creamy and salty on the inside; and Fuji apple salad with Gorgonzola cheese puffs and black pepper pecans. I’m having the most amazing flashbacks from my recent meal at Sienna right now, but I’ll tell you more in a minute. Located in El Dorado Hills’ La Borgata shopping center, Sienna is charmingly upscale but unpretentious, and has plenty to please all palates. The main dining room features a central fireplace and stylish, cozy décor. It feels like you’re at a big dinner party in a friend’s elegant home. The eatery also boasts a variety of private dining rooms, a stonetopped wraparound bar, and a Chef’s Table in the kitchen. Their wine list is well-rounded and the bar mixes up some innovative specialty cocktails. The whole place was filled with a relaxed but engaging energy the night I dined, and the service was friendly and effective. But back to the food. The aforementioned appetizers were all note-
worthy, and the entrée— honey-nut crusted salmon (aptly named “Sparkling” Salmon, thanks to the accompanying sauce that’s infused with sparkling wine) and grilled filet mignon—even better. Filet Mignon I was surprised and delighted by the combination of textures and flavors of the salmon, and the steak was expertly prepared. Both plates came with crisp green vegetables and perfectly executed whipped Macadamia Nut potatoes: smooth Crusted Brie as silk and creamy with a fluffy finish. The portions were generous and, although full, I can never resist looking at a good dessert menu. Although the choices were almost overwhelming, we kept it real with Sienna’s house-made doughnut holes accompanied by a trio of dipping sauces. For the sweetest ending ever, try the powdered ones with the silky chocolate sauce, and the cinnamon crumb variety with the crème anglaise. Between the successful madefrom-scratch dishes, impressive Happy Hour and inviting environment, dining at Sienna is a meal to remember.

taste RED WINE ROAST CHICKEN My Little French Kitchen: Over a Hundred Recipes From the Mountains to the Market Squares and Shores of France By Rachel Khoo, photographs by David Loftus (Chronicle Books, 2014, $35)

2/3 cup red wine 6 tbsp. tomato paste 3 sprigs thyme, leaves picked 3 sprigs marjoram, leaves picked, or 1/2 tsp. dried 1/2 cup red wine vinegar 1 whole chicken, cut into 8 pieces (about 3-1/2 lb.) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 18 oz. baby potatoes, washed 3 onions, quartered 6 carrots, peeled and quartered lengthwise 1/2 cup water
Mix together the wine, tomato paste, thyme, marjoram and vinegar. Season the chicken with plenty of salt and pepper, then place in a sealed Ziploc bag with the wine mixture. Shake the bag to make sure each piece is well coated. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight. Place the potatoes in a saucepan of cold water, cover and bring to a boil. Boil for 1 to 2 minutes, then drain in a colander. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Arrange the onions, carrots, and cooked potatoes in a large baking dish or tray and pour in the water. Arrange the chicken pieces, skin-side up, in a layer on top of the vegetables. Pour the marinade over the chicken. Cover with a sheet of parchment or foil and roast for 30 minutes. Remove the parchment and baste the chicken with the cooking liquid. Roast, uncovered, for another 15 minutes, or until the skin is

crisp. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6. Tips: Buying a whole chicken will always be more affordable. If you aren’t up for dissecting it yourself, ask your butcher to cut it into pieces for you. If there’s no knifewielding butcher about, you can always cheat and go for chicken thighs. If you’re unsure whether the chicken is cooked through, pierce the flesh with a sharp knife; the juices from the chicken should run clear. Get ahead: The vegetables and chicken can be prepared up to 1 day in advance, then simply pop it all in the baking dish and cook.
JAM CELLARS 2013 CABERNET SAUVIGNON JaM Cellars started in 2009 with the goal of giving wine lovers of all ages something easy to appreciate: big fruit, soft tannins and reasonable prices. Named after owners John (“J”) and Michelle (“M”), their winemaker, Rob Lloyd, obtained his master’s degree in enology at UC Davis and was the former winemaker at the renowned Rombauer Vineyards. You can see their vision come to fruition with the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. At $20 a bottle, it delivers a nice bold flavor and a not-too-dry finish. Extremely rich and smooth, with full fruit flavors and a hint of oak, it pairs beautifully with this month’s Red Wine Roast Chicken. —Heather Zamarripa, Executive Chef, 36 Handles Pub & Eatery

YOUR BRIDAL ENTOURAGE Folsom 916-960-8256 yourbridalentourage.com
Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? The Place Within is a non-profit counseling agency that provides affordable counseling by marriage and family therapist interns who are master’s-level therapists working toward licensure. We believe counseling should be accessible to everyone. The Place Within has an office in Roseville, and I realized that there was a need in Folsom as well. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? We collaborate with Powerhouse Ministries Women’s Shelter in Folsom to provide free counseling to their residents. We also work with Sacramento County to provide individual and group counseling services. I personally speak with each of our customers on the phone to make sure I understand their needs and match them with the therapist who is best for them. Why is your staff the best in the business? Our staff is dedicated to helping clients meet their therapy goals. As a staff, we are always attending the latest seminars and workshops to assure we have the most current training possible; what’s more, we all have huge hearts and compassion for others. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Being married to my husband and best friend for 25 years, and raising three fantastic adult children. Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? Brene Brown, author of The Gifts of Imperfection, because she teaches that it’s okay to not be perfect and to strive to be vulnerable, present and authentic. What’s your biggest job perk? I get to emotionally connect with people every day. I’m honored to be able to walk with people during their pain, and celebrate their successes when they reach their therapy goals. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Chicago Fire!

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Our business is something we’ve been doing for 10 years, but we wanted to bring a grander, more professional and more organized service to the table (or to the wedding, I should say!). You can hire many different makeup artists and hairstylists for your wedding; however, when you hire Your Bridal Entourage we are exactly that: your entourage—a professional team that brings the salon to you! We offer everything you need to look stunning before and on your big day: skin care, waxing, sunless tanning, makeup and hair. Your Bridal Entourage aims to make your wedding day as memorable as it can be. What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? The first wedding Jayna and I did together was great, but we hadn’t started Your Bridal Entourage yet. We didn’t have all the supplies we have now—salon chairs, tables, etc. We also noticed that not having a uniform confused other guests about who we were and why we were there. We walked away with the idea that our bride should not have to do anything but get ready and enjoy her day. Now we come in uniform, with everything you could possibly need, and setup an hour before the bride even start getting ready. Why is your staff the best in the business? Our staff is always extremely reliable and professional, and our expectations are very high. We aim to be the best possible service in the wedding/event industry. As well, our education is ongoing to ensure we stay ahead of the beauty industry. Our hairstylists and makeup artists are not only highly trained but know the latest trends. We deliver only the best. Where do you go when the going gets tough? The gym and the trails. There’s nothing like a good workout or outdoor run to blow off steam and leave a bad day in the dust.

How’s it going? Very nice to meet you the other night. Sorry if I seemed a little under-enthused. It’s not you. The kids made me stay up and I’m just not good at it anymore. (There was a time though—just ask the mid-’80s.) Listen, I know it’s not my place, and I won’t even pretend to know what you have planned for the next 12 months, but if you can, would you mind taking it a bit easy on us? Twenty-fourteen was, well...I think it had good intentions, but it seemed a little...inattentive...and to be honest, we’re all a bit exhausted. It didn’t start with 2014. In fact, 2014, if you’re reading this, I hope we’re cool. You had a full plate, and I’ll still go glow bowling like we talked about—first pitcher’s on me—but maybe it was the year that, to borrow a term from running, we finally hit the wall. Epic storms. Epic droughts. Earthquakes. Vanishing jetliners. ISIS. Robin Williams. Bill Cosby. Ferguson. Ebola. Kim Kardashian baring her butt to try “breaking the Internet” (but, as Blake Shelton so aptly put it, managing only to add a crack to it). Yeesh. Look, it wasn’t all bad: Those Ice Bucket Challenges for the ALS Association were pretty cool…literally. The Giants won the World Series (and, speaking of—how about all those awesome Hunter Pence signs? I think my favorite was “Hunter Pence pronounces it ‘li-berry’”). Craft breweries were hoppin’, spacecrafts landed on comets and Jimmy Kimmel’s “Mean Tweets.” Compassion seemed to finally trump ignorance regarding people’s personal lives—like how they live them and with whom. The economy seemed to be waking up (although at about the same pace as a teenager on summer break, but still...). And last fall fuel prices dropped so much I started driving to gas stations further away just to fill up. Only kidding. It was nice to see them come down though. But a lot of problems prevailed: Much of the Middle East remained utterly devoid of peace or sanity. We mourned, heartbroken, with the families and colleagues of two brave law enforcement officers cut down in the line of duty one senselessly tragic afternoon. We watched thousands of 66 stylefedh.com - January 2015
signed, sealed, delivered A Note to the New Year by Tom Mailey firefighters struggle to keep our forests from going up in giant mushroom clouds of smoke. Kindergartners still understood the importance of cooperation better than most of our elected representatives. We learned Sam’s Club had better front door security than the White House and, in the name of homeland security, we found out some poor bozos have been tasked with what has to be the most soul-crushingly mundane job the government ever
created: keeping track of our every inane email, text and phone call. Talk about LOL. Meanwhile, cyber crooks leaked our credit information online and cyber creeps leaked nude celebrity selfies. Oh, that too: People were still taking selfies. Hey, we know that just flipping the page on a calendar isn’t going to make all of our problems go away. We totally get there’s a lot of work to be done and the only ones who can change things are us. So please, 2015, no pressure. But if it’s possible, could you lighten things up—just a little? It’d be hugely appreciated. Now, I seemed to have accidentally deleted 2014’s number from my phone. Do you have it? Glow bowl starts in a couple hours.
