laying favorites is usually not my game—but this month it’s inescapable. This issue, featuring Style’s ever-popular Readers’ Choice Awards, is one of our biggest and best of the year (see, I can’t help myself). It’s time to pay homage to the winners throughout our community who you, Style readers, so loudly cheered for and elected as your “favorites” for this passing year. From favorite seafood restaurant and favorite local artist to favorite local event and favorite place for a facial, we’ve got the scoop with who’s who across the region. Also, be sure to check out some new categories (and new winners) as our local community grows and flourishes. And the favoritism doesn’t stop there. In this month’s FYI, “The 10 Spot” features some of Style’s favorite ways to celebrate Halloween locally. There are “spooktaculars,” haunted houses and festivities galore—all promising howling good ways to spend the late-month autumn nights. Q&A Q: What advice would you give to your younger self? A: Dream big and volunteer everywhere! Q: What’s your biggest pet peeve? A: When someone says, “No one uses the public library anymore.” Q: Biggest life inspirations? A: My family. Q: What are you most proud of? A: The El Dorado County Library’s recent proclamation from the Board of Supervisors, recognizing the importance of early childhood literacy in our county. Q: Favorite humanitarian cause? A: Organizations (public and private) that work collaboratively to help El Dorado County’s homeless families and individuals.

an Robbins has always been a book lover, but i t wa s n ’ t u n t i l she moved to El Dorado County 15 years ago that she turned her love into a vocation. She began as a library volunteer, immediately gravitating toward working with children. “I love children—their curiosity, their interest in learning new things, their surprise and joy at reading,” Robbins enthuses. She eventually pursued her master’s degree in library science, and for the past 11 years has worked as El Dorado County Library’s children’s librarian. Throughout her career, Robbins has been an advocate for the important role libraries—and parents—can play in foster8 styleedc.com - October 2014

ing a love of reading in children. Thanks to a grant from the State of California, called First 5 El Dorado (first5eldorado.com), the library has been able to provide reading programs for children ages zero to five. Through her volunteer work (she served as past chair and is currently an active member) with the Western Slope Community Strengthening Ready by Five Committee, Robbins helps to encourage collaboration among area nonprofits in support of local families with young children. She also assists with the library’s numerous reading programs targeted at older children and teens. Robbins’ dream is to expand the library— both in terms of physical space and offerings—to remind people why getting kids to read matters. “[We’re] supporting the future,” she explains. “Because the children and families in our county are the future.” — Amber Foster

The Folklore Lounge

recently realized that walking down Placerville’s Main Street isn’t complete without a stop at The Folklore Lounge—a friendly 21-and-over establishment that opened its doors in May 2013. The lounge is especially abuzz on their Thursday Open Mic Nights, when my friend and I stopped in. As we listened to musicians tune their guitars, I sipped my Tahoe Mountain Brewing Company Local Lager and pondered the small but appealing menu. We settled on sharing the Bohemian, a hummus and flatbread plate with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and feta. We quickly dug in and began mixing and matching the colorful ingredients; topping the flatbread with hummus, a sliced tomato and diced onions was my favorite combo, whereas my friend preferred her flatbread topped with hummus, a slice of cucumber and crumbled feta. The fresh flavors of the veggies and slightly grilled flatbread paired well with the crisp, light beer. As guitar tuning turned into full vocal performances, it seemed every patron already had a friend inside. Q: What’s the difference between a stout, ale and an IPA?

Ales pair well with a variety of food and come in many colors—pale, amber, red, golden and brown, just to name a few—and they’re generally lighter in ABV (alcohol by volume) and IBU (international bitterness units). Typically, they’re brewed with malted barley, brewers’ yeast and some hops to offset the sweetness of the malt. Stout is a dark beer that’s light in hops and high in roasted malt. Today’s stouts are generally “sessionable” (light in alcohol), unless brewed as an imperial, which causes it to be higher in alcohol content. They can be infused with milk, oatmeal, chocolate, vanilla, espresso or even peanut butter to enrich its sweet malt flavor. IPAs were originally pale ales brewed in England for shipment to India; hops were added to preserve the beer on its long journey. Today’s IPAs are heavy on the hops, leaving fruity, citrusy and sometimes floral notes on the palate; and are generally higher in alcohol, with triple IPAs sometimes reaching 12 percent ABV. With the use of American varietal hops, such as Simcoe, Amarillo, Cascade and Citra, IPAs are a very versatile brew. The Placerville Downtown Association, the City of Placerville, Placerville’s Active 20/30 Club and the Placerville Lions Club will all come together to transform Main Street into a safe, magical place for families—complete with fun, frivolity, costumes and candy. More than 500 trick-or-treaters will start the evening on Main Street, where stores will stay open late for trick or treating from 4-6 p.m. Families with children ages 10 and under are invited to the carnival at Town Hall from 4-6 p.m.; free games, prizes and treats will all be provided, thanks to the Placerville Lions Club. Everyone will enjoy the DJ’s family-friendly beats, live from the Bell Tower. At 6:10 p.m., the costume contest will kick off. Remember, creativity counts! Placerville’s Active 20/30 Club will award prizes for the best costumes in all age groups: 3 and under, 4-6, 7-9, 10-13, 14-17 and adults. On October 18, the little ones (ages 2-12) will enjoy the Halloween Carnival/Pumpkin Patch at Cameron Park Lake from 1:30-4 p.m. Wear costumes and partake in old-fashioned carnival games, prizes, pumpkins and more. The inaugural Celebration of Giving: Time, Talent and Services will come to the Cameron Park Community Center on October 24 from 4-7:30 p.m. Attendees will learn about community resources and volunteer opportunities, honor service organizations, and enjoy live music, appetizers, local wines and beers, giveaways and an expo. Admission is free. Sell your new and gently used children’s clothes, toys and furniture on November 1 at the Mommy (& Daddy Too) Market. Children’s activities will be available while adults shop. Applications for artists and crafters are being accepted for the Christmas Craft Faire, which takes place November 22 at the Community Center. AB: Have you ever scrapped an entire set of photographs? SF: Yes. I edited a group of images while experimenting with high-dynamic-range (HDR) software, and the results were not what I was trying to achieve—the images looked overdone. Sometimes, less is more.

avender, rose, sandalwood…sure, they smell amazing, but did you know these essential oils reap healing powers? Kathleen Bailey, who has been teaching classes on aromatherapy and essential oils for 16 years in the Sacramento area, explains that “essential oils date back to ancient times...For many centuries, essential oils and other aromatics were used for religious rituals, the treatment of illness, and other physical and spiritual needs.” Despite the fact that this form of healing is rapidly growing in popularity, many still don’t realize that life-changing benefits could be just an oil away.

BENEFITS

Aromatherapy—a form of medicine that uses essential oils from plants or roots for psychological and physical well-being—can be used in a wide range of settings to treat a variety of conditions, says Jodi L. Webb, RN, a certified aromatherapist and education coordinator at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. “In general, aromatherapy relieves pain, improves your mood, and promotes a sense of relaxation,” she shares. “In fact, several essential oils—including lavender, rose, orange, bergamot, lemon and sandalwood—have been shown to relieve anxiety, stress and depression. And they are used for a wide variety of applications, including pain relief, mood enhancement and increased cognitive function.”

Essential oils are complicated compounds containing up to 100 different chemical components, Webb explains. “Each essential oil is ‘multi-talented,’ having more than one single property, like anti-inflammatory, calming or stimulating, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic or mildly analgesic,” she says. Other benefits include: promoting healthy skin, relieving rash and skin irritation, stimulating mental focus and energy, improving respiratory health, and relieving discomfort in joints and muscles. For example, peppermint (mentha piperita) can be used for respiratory infections, headaches and nausea; while lavender (lavendula agustafolia) is great for skin conditions, burns, hair loss, insomnia and nervous tension; and lemon (citrus limon) can improve microcirculation, increase white blood cells and improve memory.

SAFETY While Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils (TGEOS) are safe for most healing or medicinal purposes, education is critical, Bailey explains. “For example, it’s important to know the difference between lavendula agustafolia (true lavender) and lavandin (grosso or super),” says Bailey, who is also an instructor at Healing Arts Institute in Citrus Heights and became internationally certified in aromatherapy in 2000. “While lavendula agustafolia is used to relieve a burn, lavandin is a hybrid—and usually cut with synthetics—that can cause a burning sensation.” Some oils can be caustic to the skin and should be diluted with a carrier oil, like vegetable, olive or grapeseed, prior to use. What’s more, these oils should not be used in or around the eyes, and she also suggests consulting a reference guide, such as Essential Oils Desk Reference (Life Science Publishing), Medical Aromatherapy by Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, or The Art of Aromatherapy by Robert B. Tisserand.

BUYING Since not all essential oils are created equal, the only way to know you’re getting a pure, therapeutic-quality essential oil is to know your supplier, Webb advises. “Growing conditions vary (pollutants, pesticides, climate, altitude and time of harvest), as well as distillation methods (time and temperature),” she says. At Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Webb works with the company Young Living, which is the only one in the industry that guarantees a “seed to seal” process. “Other companies may [claim to] provide ‘therapeutic-grade’ essential oils; however, there is no regulation of the industry,” she explains. “Typically, buying them off the shelf from a health food store isn’t a guarantee that it’s a 100-percent, therapeutic-grade essential oil.”

hen the parents of today were headstrong teens, few were anticipating technology’s global takeover. Most parents struggle with finding a happy, healthy medium when it comes to teenagers and technology. It is, after all, something of a high-wire act—one with no net and a long way to fall. So, where to draw that murky line in the sand? Here, a local high school teacher, mother and student try to find the balance. “When my kids first got cell phones, they were obsessed; they never put them down,” admits an El Dorado Hills mom with two daughters—one still in high school. “But like anything, they became more of a novelty and, though they still use them, they were on to the next thing.” While technology is hardly a fad (not like, say, skinny jeans) there always seems to be another new social media site or gadget competing for our teens’ fickle attention. So in this case, rather than ban all devices from the house, Mom set fair rules around its use—in other words, apps are awesome, but family comes first. Or, as she puts it, “No technology during meals or family time.” From an educational point of view, technology has clear advantages for teens: a broader research base and computer skills they can later apply in college and the workforce, for starters.

ourkids HOW ONE LOCAL TEEN FINDS HER BALANCE At age 12, Alyssa Wong, 2014 Oak Ridge High School graduate, got a cell phone and started using computers for more than just school projects. Today, when asked to tally her average tech use, the 18-year-old offers, “Maybe 14 hours a day? I’m on my iPhone constantly; it’s practically attached to me at this point.” I also watch TV a lot during the summer when I’m not working.” Alas, work. A sideline. Something else to do. With so much at a click, Wong, a frequent video chatter, places

a high premium on its perks— namely, keeping tabs on friends and those stationed in other states. (She credits social media for bridging distances.)

Despite this, notes a teacher at Ponderosa High School, “some of the many benefits also can negatively impact students.” Academically, ramifications range from illegible handwriting to significantly poor spelling skills. More concerning, he adds, “I’ve noticed young adults do not appear to be as capable of managing themselves in a formal conversation nearly as well as they used to. Conversing is a learned skill, something they seem to have lost with all the texting, instant messaging, Facebooking, etc.” He also cites distraction and an inability to cope without technology as issues. “I have personally witnessed students fall apart over the loss of a phone, which should be considered a convenience rather than life support.” But, as technology is here to stay, parents and educators alike are embracing it as a key learning tool when used appropriately, whether that means installing a password protected Internet connection or limiting access to certain websites and related strategies. Welcome your teens’ participation or curiosity if offered. If not, take heart knowing that your parental example is teaching them how to connect in ways beyond the digital realm. As for your teens’ technology habits, if their use is responsible and constructive, leverage it to bring your family together. Find a community volunteer project for your tribe, then enlist your teen to Instagram their benevolence. Lastly, consider setting out for a remote, cellphone-free zone that allows teens to connect with their innate sense of discovery—and the wider world.

Technology has also proved to be an asset to her in school. Having a phone with Internet, Wong explains, allows for fast access to information should she need to retrieve stats on the latest economic policies or correctly conjugate a verb. On the flip side, Wong says, “You lose out on a lot of chances to have real, face-toface conversations. A huge percentage of my generation doesn’t have basic conversation skills because they rely on their phones too much; instead of talking in person, they hide behind a phone or laptop.” Wong’s parents embraced technology by helping her navigate the computer world. She, in turn, helped them become more cell phone savvy and now uses technology broadly, but in conjunction with the one thing predating even the most rudimentary forms of communication: her noggin. “Nowadays it is harder to have that balance because technology is used in every aspect of our lives,” she admits. “I think for me, when I’m with people, I know not to use any phones or anything, and that’s my balance.”

Locally, Placerville’s Western Slope Health Center is home to more than a dozen veterans who have benefited from the group’s generosity in the form of personalized beanies, gloves, blankets, pillows and wheelchair bags. “The smiles on the faces of our veterans once they received their ‘care package’ made all the difference, because one could really see exactly how cared for they felt,” explains Western Slope Activities Director, Shane McCormack. “Much like the blankets they [give], Sew 4 Vets brings warmth to the hearts and a smile to the faces of each

facilities serving veterans. “We have grown into a large group of volunteers,” Chambers says. “Nobody gets paid. Nobody wants to get paid. We’re happy to serve.” While a number of Sew 4 Vets members generally meet twice a month at Placerville’s Veterans’ Memorial Building to create their wares, others share their talents by quilting, crocheting and knitting from the comfort of home. The materials they use—including fabric, yarn, thread and quilt batting—are donated and purchased with the help of fund-raisers and revenue from their sales at local craft fairs. For her part, current board President, Karen Wilson, says she’d like to see the group build up enough supplies to create a stockpile of quilt kits for volunteers who are unable to attend meetings but want to help. “I have always had a soft spot for our veterans,” Wilson shares. “Seeing how our veterans coming back from Vietnam were treated always affected me. Support-

veteran they serve in our community.” According to McCormack, Western Slope resident, Robert, (who served in active combat during WWII), was particularly moved by the gift of a military-themed lap blanket. “When he saw his new blanket for the first time, his eyes filled with tears. He stated they were ‘tears of joy’ as he was truly honored to receive a gift that reminded him of all the great men and women who served with him to protect our country.”

ight years ago, Darlene Chambers was approached by the Placerville Elks Lodge with a challenge to sew 100 lap quilts for residents of the Veterans Home of California-Yountville in time for a facility-wide barbecue. Having donated her time at Elks-sponsored sewing workshops (where members create quilts and neck and helmet coolers for American troops), Chambers was up for the task, but knew she needed help in order to complete the project on time. With her friend, Daisy Buchignani, she gathered volunteers from the Elks, the American Sewing Guild, and, as she likes to say, other “angels at large” to tackle the job. Ultimately, the group created more than 100 quilts in just six months. The success of their efforts inspired Chambers to found Sew 4 Vets—an organization dedicated to donating lap and bed quilts, dinner bibs, walker bags and other handmade items to various

take a walk back Tallac Resort by Jerrie Beard still stroll the promenade. The resort offered hiking, horseback riding, swimming, sunbathing, boating, hunting, fishing and gambling. Although gambling was illegal, the sheriff was in Placerville and news of his visits always traveled faster than the sheriff himself, allowing resort staff time to put away the gaming tables before his arrival. To supply the kitchen, which prepared cuisine “equal to any, excelled by none,” the resort had numerous vegetable gardens and a large

dairy farm. Formal dress was required at dinner, which was usually served in eight courses to the accompaniment of a full string orchestra. The Tallac Point House burned down in 1914, and the resort was closed shortly after Baldwin’s death in 1920; the Tallac Hotel and other resort buildings were dismantled in 1928. Baldwin’s daughter, Anita, kept the property as a private estate, which includes the Baldwin house and cottages that still grace the property.

ong before white men set eyes on Lake Tahoe, the Washoe tribes of Carson Valley revered the area, calling it da ow a ga or “big water.” A mispronunciation of this gave us the present name: Tahoe. The natives developed camps, a favorite area being between present-day Camp Richardson and Taylor Creek, which they visited each summer to gather food. Discovery of the Comstock Lode in Nevada brought a steady stream of travelers and goods from cities on the West Coast through the Tahoe Basin in the late 1800s. It also brought logging companies eager to harvest the surrounding pine forests. Between 1860 and 1895, 730 million board feet of lumber and 500,000 cords of wood were harvested from the area. Yank Clement built the Tallac Point House in 1873 to service the travelers and lumber companies. His establishment welcomed everyone and included a saloon, hostelry, general store, horse livery and barns, as well as a dance floor mounted on springs. The general attitude of the place was “ya’ll come.” Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin, who made $20 million speculating on the Comstock mines, acquired the Tallac Point House in 1880, renovated the hotel and transformed the property into “The Grandest Resort in the World.” Catering to the wealthy of San Francisco and Virginia City, Baldwin added cottages, a steam plant to provide heat to guests’ rooms, a garage, boathouse, three piers, a fountain, a lighted promenade, and the impressive Tallac Hotel and Casino. The Tallac Hotel was three-and-a-half stories tall with a tower, covered porches, polished hardwood floors, $10,000 worth of French plate mirrors, and 500 electric lights. In addition to sleeping quarters, sitting rooms, a sun parlor, café, cellar and large kitchen, the hotel had indoor plumbing and a long-distance phone line in the lobby. For entertainment, it offered a billiard room, theater, bowling alley and casino. A paved promenade lit by electric lights connected the Tallac Hotel and the Tallac Point House, while landscaped walkways provided access to cottages, tennis courts, a croquet lawn, boat dock and archery field. Although the buildings have long since disappeared, visitors may

WOOD Beautiful but tough, wood is a warmer and more forgiving material than tile. There are two kinds of wood floors: solid wood and engineered wood. Both are eco-friendly options when certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and come in different widths and finishes to create your unique aesthetic. Another option is to choose floors salvaged from older buildings or milled from salvaged posts and beams.

Consider pairing concrete with a radiant heating surface.

CARPET AND AREA RUGS For versatility and durability, there’s nothing better than tile. It can be used in any room and with any design, and comes in a wide range of colors, textures, finishes and prices. Tile is universally appealing, sustainable and easy to maintain. Natural stone tile includes limestone, slate, soapstone, marble and granite. Stone is subject to weathering and aging, which many people prefer; what’s more, natural stone develops a patina over time that is unique to the traffic patterns of the space. Just as for linen fabric and wood cabinetry, the natural look and wear only adds to the product’s beauty.

LAMINATE Laminate flooring is a photograph of another surface that is adhered to a base and then sealed. Inexpensive, resilient and easy to install, laminate is popular with do-ityourselfers. The higher-end products are more resistant to damage and will last longer. Adding an underlayment will absorb sound and make the flooring sound less hollow when walked on. Unlike wood, laminate cannot be refinished.

Carpet provides the most warmth and comfort of any floor covering, and today’s technologies have created an even greater variety of textures, colors and cuts. Carpets made of woven plants and grasses, such as sisal, are now much more versatile. A beautiful rug can be a room’s focal point and make it feel cozy, especially over concrete, tile or stone floors. Area rugs can also be the centerpiece of a room, used to define one specific area within a room, or placed over an existing carpet to create added dimension. A well-chosen floor rug placed in the right spot will enhance anything you can dream up.

n Napoli, where love is king, when boy meets girl, here’s what they say…” That’s how Dean Martin’s “That’s Amoré” starts. Why am I singing? Because the Napoletana-style pie at Pizza Bene is worth singing about. Open since April, this locale is situated directly behind the iconic Bell Tower on Placerville’s Main Street, and it’s my personal hope that their pizza will be just as iconic. Inside, the atmosphere is inviting and the service friendly and attentive—it already feels like a well-established pizzeria. Craft brews and local wines—from an Eel River Organic IPA and Outlaw Milk Stout to a Shadow Ranch Tempranillo and Sierra Vista Merlot—allow patrons to wet their whistles while waiting for their fare. My lunch started with a small Italian salad, which boasted a generous serving of Romaine lettuce, olives, red onions, pepperoncini, walnuts, blue cheese and tomatoes—all tossed with creamy ranch. Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? McCoy Fatula, LLP focuses on family law and civil litigation, with a boutique practice area in wine law. The practice area found us. We never set out to be family law attorneys, but after a prior experience, we realized there was a lot of opportunity to help people out, especially children, through family law. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? We are members and/or sponsors of many local organizations dedicated to giving back. This past holiday season we started our first toy drive through a local chapter of Toys for Tots. We hosted a gourmet food tasting and “charged” one new toy; people brought many toys (we collected about 100!). We also offer a number of low-cost programs and classes to help people educate themselves on matters relating to family law. For example, the S.A.V.E. Marriages Initiative—which is our response to the ever-growing number of divorces—offers couples who are new, pre-marriage or during marriage, the chance to have a realistic conversation about the major problems leading to divorce. We also offer a single-day class, Divorce 101, to help people who are preparing to go through a divorce. We discuss the entire process through our four-step approach, highlighting areas that generate the most problems emotionally, mentally and financially. We also developed a single-day course—from a human resources perspective—to help address common problems associated with one person wearing all the hats at local businesses. We realize that when one person is required to make all decisions, many small issues go unaddressed that ultimately become bigger problems later. And finally, customer service is…? Caring about the client, providing them the best services possible, and informing them about what’s going on. Bad news or good, clients need to know the facts of their matter. They need to know you care and that you’re not just in this business for money. It’s our firm’s culture to reply to all phone communications within 24 hours.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? I’m a professionally licensed naturopathic doctor with a four-year doctorate degree from Bastyr University in Washington. After receiving my bachelor’s in nutrition, I felt a calling to pursue this profession, as I wanted to help people heal naturally from diseases without having to solely rely on medications and surgery. Naturopathic medicine integrates the wisdom and depth of nature with science, research and clinical practice. My practice focuses on providing natural health care that is safe, effective and preventative, while investigating the root cause of illness and supporting the body’s ability to heal and restore toward greater health. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I’m actively involved in many professional networking groups, including the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce. I strive to spread the word about the benefits of naturopathic medical health care and frequently give free presentations on various health topics to educate the public about more natural ways to live healthier and happier. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Aside from my naturopathic medical degree and working with Dr. Jonathan Wright, MD, at the Tahoma Clinic in Washington, I’m most proud of starting my own health care practice here in El Dorado County. Every day, I’m learning how to be a better doctor, business owner and creative entrepreneur. I wear many hats and am proud to discover how persistent and resilient I am. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I love to hike! Hiking in nature is rejuvenating and yet I feel serenity and clarity so that I can resolve problems much easier. When unable to hike, I exercise at home several times a week, which is a crucial stress reliever. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? ghost notes Tales from a Haunted House by Tom Mailey Who can explain why ghosts are so restless In the middle of a night such as this? Why must they clatter, clamor and clang And bump into things that we miss?

Is it me coming home from another day’s work Whistling as I walk through the door? Do I disturb them by turning the TV on And cheering when my football team scores?

What makes a ghost so thoughtless, So clumsy and rude with his touch? What makes him appear at the top of the stairs And stand there without doing much?

Is it the way our furniture’s arranged, Can ghosts be obsessive compulsive? Should the chair be here, the couch over there, But they’re not so the spook finds it repulsive?

Why do they move things on mantles When for a moment our eyes dart away? Why do they tap us with icy cold fingers Or moan everything that they say?

Or maybe they dislike what we cooked tonight, Was it something their nose couldn’t handle? Are they merely saying they don’t like the smell And someone should light a candle?

Why do they choose to sit in creaky old rockers And not recliners or a comfy new couch? And why, if they’re ghosts and don’t weigh a thing, Are their footsteps so heavy and loud?

Do they hate the station I play on the radio? Does country music send them all reeling? Are the drapes the wrong color? Or the style of fan on our ceiling? Or maybe they once saw me naked, Stepping from the tub and bending for a towel. That’d be enough for the scariest of ghouls To let out a shriek and a howl.

And if a door is open, they’ll slam it When shutting it gently would do. That’d be enough to scare me half to death Wouldn’t it be for you too?

I’m starting to think that maybe that’s it, It’s not them scaring us that’s the issue. It may be reverse—we may be their curse And that’s why sometimes ghosts will go…BOO!
