A

lot can happen in a little amount of time. Last month, over the span of two weeks, I got married, explored two new countries (Sweden and Norway) and was given a new job title; even my surrounds changed: nightfall started to settle in earlier, morning air became crisper, and the onslaught of all-things pumpkin finally hit store shelves and coffeehouses.

While change is always an adjustment, the list above is nothing to complain about and, if anything, makes me want to jump for leaf pile joy.

A lthough autumn officially starts in September, for me, October is when the transition really begins, so I guess it ’s timely that this is also the month I take over the reins o f e d it o r h e r e a t S t y l e. O u r f o r m e r w o r d s m it h , g r a m ma r ph i le a nd a l laround powerhouse left some pretty big shoes to fill (size nine to be exact), but I’m excited and up for the challenge.

Raised in Auburn and as the managing editor for the past six-and-a-half years, I’m quite familiar and passionate about the region— and this magazine — and excited for the growth spurt that’s upon us…especially in the form of breweries and wineries.

Speaking of the latter, in this month’s feature, “ Your Beer and Wine Bucket List: 20+ Must-Try Local Libations,” we asked the experts behind the craft to give us their most sought-after sips, and I must sa y: We all ha ve some serious drinking to do. Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?

A: Slow down! You have the rest of your life to work. I would also advise my younger self to not care so much about what other people think.

Q: What comes to you naturally?

A: Conversation with anyone and everyone. I enjoy being around people and listening to their experiences. I think the art of conversation is getting lost in our increasingly tech-based society.

T

iffany Larson may be an accomplished English teacher at El Dorado High School (EDHS), but she didn’t always know what she wanted to do with her life. She grew up in Michigan, in a small town with just 1,200 residents. Although her mother was a teacher, Larson originally went to college thinking she would become a nurse. Then she started working part-time at a writing center and quickly discovered she had a talent for helping others learn. Soon after, she changed majors.

After graduating, Larson spent a year as a reading specialist at an elementary school, an experience that made her a strong advocate for literacy education for all students, including English language learners (ELL). “Every kid deserves an education,” she says, explaining that many children without mastery of the language are placed in English-languageonly classes and expected to succeed. To address this issue, Larson recently applied for—and won—a prestigious Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching granted by the U.S. Department of State. Early 6 styleedc.com - October 2016

next year, she will fly to Finland to research their aid in language acquisition for immigrant and refugee students who are able to access core curriculum, and their successful strategies for integrating nonnative speakers into their school system.

She hopes to later apply her insights to helping ELL students throughout the El Dorado region and beyond. She also plans to continue doing her best to inspire kids to find their passion and pursue it, as she once did. “I love inspiring kids—not just to be better writers—but to pursue bigger goals and attempt to achieve them,” she shares.

oa Vista Orchards has been a staple in Apple Hill since Karl Visman—who emigrated from Holland—opened its doors in 1915, and whose grandson Brad Visman now serves as general manager. Closing only on Thanksgiving and Christmas, Boa Vista is known for its year-round farmers’ market stand and deli.

Offering everything from fresh fruit and veggies, to local honey, jams and jellies, pickled goods, tri-tip sandwiches and frozen baked goods (so you can fool your friends at your next dinner party that, yep, you really did bake that pie!), you will of course find all things apple here, too: caramel, candied, doughnuts, pies, cookies, brownies and, yes, even wine. On a recent visit, however, it was their scrumptious Blackberry Dumpling—which featured perfectly ripened blackberry compote, folded into pastry that was both chewy on the inside and crisp and flaky on top—that caught the attention of my stomach. The blackberry seeds slightly popped, and the ratio of filling to dough was just right. If blackberries aren’t your favorite, they offer other dumpling varieties, including apple, blueberry and apricot. Q: How soon should I get my first check-up after giving birth?

A: A postpartum appointment should occur four to six weeks after your delivery. If there were complications during the pregnancy, however, such as hypertension, a follow up in seven to 14 days may be recommended.

A physical examination will be performed, your weight and blood pressure will be checked, and an abdominal and/or pelvic exam will be performed. As well, you will be screened for postpartum depression or postpartum blues.

If you’re feeling sad, crying frequently or just not feeling like yourself, talk to your doctor; you should be forming a strong bond with your new baby and if there are problems, help is available. If your pregnancy was complicated by gestational diabetes, follow-up will be discussed and labs may be ordered. Your physician may ask additional questions, and you should feel free to ask any questions that you may have.

The annual Trick or Treat on Main Street is stirring up a particularly fantastic event this October 31. The Placerville Downtown Association, the City of Placerville, the Placerville Active 20-30 Club, and the Placerville Lions Club have joined together to create a safe, family-friendly environment of fun and whimsy along Main Street—an enchanted place of costumes and candy.

Stores stay open late for trick-or-treating from 4-6 p.m., and a DJ broadcasts a family-friendly beat, live from the Bell Tower. Families with children ages 10 and under are invited to the children’s carnival at Town Hall from 4-6 p.m. for free games, prizes and treats.

At 5:30 p.m., gather around the Bell Tower for a costume contest. Creativity counts! Prizes are awarded for the best costumes in all age groups: 6 and under, 7-9 years, 10-12 years, 13-17 years, adults, couples/group themes, and dogs.

Portions of Main Street will be closed from 3-8 p.m.; parking is available at the downtown parking garage and various city lots. Don’t miss out on this un-boo-lievable event!

the10 spot Breast Cancer Facts In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we a s ke d l o c a l m e d i c a l experts—Joelle Jakobsen, M D , FA C S , g e n e r a l s u rg e o n a n d b re a s t cancer specialist for Mercy Medical Group, a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation; Dan Herron, MD, director of Women’s Imaging at Mercy Imaging Center; and Candice Sauder, MD, a breast cancer surgeon at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center—to share 10 lesser-known facts about the disease.

1. The majority (75 percent) of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of it.

2. Women with dense breasts have a higher chance of getting the disease, and their cancer may not be visible on a mammogram.

3. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, with a mean age of 61 at diagnosis.

4. There’s no evidence that hair dye or antiperspirant increase your risk.

5. Growing evidence suggests that women who get regular physical activity have a 10-25-percent lower risk. Avoiding weight gain and obesity and minimizing alcohol intake may also help to reduce one’s risk.

6. Research shows—and all the national health organizations agree—that the most lives will be saved if women begin mammogram screening at age 40 and have one each year.

7. Recent research indicates that long-term, heavy smoking may increase breast cancer risk, particularly among women who start smoking before their first pregnancy.

8. For women at 20 years of age, the risk is 1 in 1,674. At 30, it’s 1 in 225, increasing to 1 in 69 at age 40, 1 in 44 at age 50, 1 in 29 at age 60, and 1 in 26 at age 70.

9. Breast cancer typically produces no symptoms.

10. Although there is a small amount of radiation with a mammogram, many women get exposed to the same amount each year walking around from environmental radiation.

on’t miss the third annual Cameron Park Community Showcase on October 13 from 5-7 p.m. at the Cameron Park Community Center. Peruse nonprofit and business booths, veteran connections, and visit the Community Job Fair. Admission is free; food, beverages, music and cash drawings will also be part of the fun.

The Halloween Carnival and Pumpkin Patch takes place October 22 at Cameron Park Lake from 1:30-4 p.m. and is geared for ages 2-12. Have your child put on their costumes for an afternoon of family fun, complete with old-fashioned carnival games, prizes, pumpkins and more!

Artists and crafters applications are being accepted for the Christmas Craft Faire, scheduled for November 19 at the Community Center.

Youth basketball sign-ups are currently being taken for boys and girls in grades 1-8; don’t miss out on this year’s season.

Events for mature adults this month include a Senior Lunch on Mondays and Fridays at noon (suggested donation of $3), bridge on Mondays at 1 p.m. and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., and bingo on October 11 from 1-3 p.m. The 50+ Room is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for games, including Rummikub, Mexican train, pinochle, hand and foot, and cribbage—or bring a game of your own. Exercise classes include Tai Chi for Better Balance, chair yoga, modified Zumba and more.

On October 27 from 10 a.m. to noon, Kris Adams from Premier World Discovery will be at the Community Center for a free presentation on the trips planned for the upcoming year.

For the young at heart, programs include ballet, ukulele, sewing, taekwondo, gymnastics, tennis, bird identification and more. Classical guitar, art classes, jewelry making, fused glass, knitting, a holiday photo memory workshop, CPR, and hunter safety workshops are also available. Fitness classes include yoga, tai chi, jazzercise, Zumba, cardio barre and belly fit.

Before I Die Wall August 20 / Robinson’s Pharmacy, Placerville With chalk in hand, many came out for the unveiling of Placerville’s “Before I Die Wall”—an international project that creates a space for people to come together, share their dreams, and be a part of a global art movement—where passersby can scribble one of their bucket-list items. Whether you have yet to find yourself in downward-facing dog or you can hold a headstand for a couple minutes, both beginners and yoga experts can reap the rewards of the many different styles available. Read on to learn which types are offered around the region (only a small sampling of what’s available), as well as how it can improve both your mental and physical health. 1 / Restorative Also known as yin yoga, this style is soft and gentle, says Christian Devine, a yoga instructor at Roseville Health and Wellness Center. “It is simply a centering of your breath and body, aligning your physical and mental functions by practicing stillness or gentle movement for extended periods of time,” he says.

Health benefits: Anyone—beginner to advanced, younger to older adults—can benefit from a restorative yoga class.

“It slows down the pace of life,” Devine says. “It’s soothing to the nervous system, encourages mindfulness, cultivates heightened body awareness, deepens self-awareness and introspection, strengthens acceptance and detachment, helps you feel safe and more.”

2 / Vinyasa Referring to a flow or “arranging something in a special way,” vinyasa is an arrangement of yoga poses that flow together. “Students coordinate movement with their breath to flow from one pose to the next,” Devine says.

Vinyasa is a great complement to other sports or activities, such as running, cycling, swimming, etc. “It’s more than a workout—it’s about connection to your mind and body, along with a community connection,” says Ronda Kamka, coowner of Zuda Yoga Folsom.

Health benefits: During a vinyasa flow, students will improve blood circulation,

help their lungs work more efficiently, improve cardiovascular health, promote healthy gastrointestinal function, build a stronger immune system, boost metabolism and more.

Pattabhi Jois during the 20th century, and is often promoted as a modern-day form of classical Indian yoga, Devine says. “Ashtanga means eight limbs or branches, of which asana or physical yoga posture is merely one branch, breathing (or pranayama) is another...

These two, along with six other branches of study, make up all eight limbs.”

According to Gretta Smith, owner of Ohana Moon Yoga in Cameron Park, ashtanga classes feature the basic dynamic recurring vinyasa flow, as well as the stillness and precision of Bikram (hot yoga).

Health benefits: Ashtanga helps to detox the body and is great for yogis looking for strength and discipline. You’ll become stronger, have a calmer mind and improve circulation.

4 / Hatha Hatha yoga refers to the practice of physical yoga postures, meaning your ashtanga, vinyasa, iyengar and power yoga classes are all hatha yoga, Devine says. “The word ‘hatha’ can be translated as ‘sun’ (ha) and ‘moon’ (tha), or the yoga of balance,” he adds.

uhammad Ali was one of the best-known faces of Parkinson’s disease (PD). His death earlier this year raised anew our awareness that PD can—and does—happen to the greatest of champions. Ali’s passing was also an urgent reminder to keep fighting for a cure.

Parkinson’s Association of Northern California (PANC) has been supporting the fight since 1996. The organization is based in Folsom and works on behalf of those with PD, along with their families and care partners. One of its many functions is to oversee more than 30 support groups throughout the region that meet monthly and are led by dedicated volunteers.

We also provide subsidies for respite support of those who care for persons with PD.” Kretz became involved with PANC after being invited to sit in on a board meeting two years ago. “Many, if not most, of our volunteers are either a person with PD or a spouse or family member of someone with PD, but that wasn’t what brought me to PANC,” she says. “As a retired nurseattorney, I felt a need to contribute time and energy to an organization that enhances the quality of life for those dealing with a chronic disease.”

One way PANC improves quality of life is with a new program called ParkinsonWISE. “Ron, with PD, was hoping to find a workout program that was in synch with his PD challenges,” Kretz recounts. “So

ising from the ashes of the great fire of 1856, the Cary House still graces Placerville’s Main Street.

William Cary, a prominent businessman in Placerville who also served a term as mayor, built the Cary House in 1857 after fire destroyed Lola Montez his first inn, the Placer Hotel. According to the April 18, 1857, edition of the Mountain Democrat, the Cary House was “a large three-story brick hotel— perfectly fireproof—in the old El Dorado lot on M ain Stre et. The location is the best in town, and the building will be the largest and finest furnished in our county.” The hotel was one of the first to offer hot and cold baths.

The Cary House hosted many notable figures of the time. Mark Twain is reported to have lectured at the hotel, Lola Montez and the outlaw Black Bart are rumored to have stayed there, and in 1859 Horace Greeley gave a speech from the second

Th e C ar y H ouse also se r ve d as headquarters for the Wells Fargo & Company express office and the Pioneer Stage Line, which provided service between Placerville and V i r g i n i a C i t y. I t i s estimated that over $90,000,000 in bullion from the Comstock Lode passed over the porch of the Cary House on its way to San Francisco.

The grand hotel changed ownership 18 times before being purchased in 1908 by John Raffetto. In 1915, R a f f e t to s o l d a l l t h e furnishings and razed the building to make way for a new structure—the building that still stands today.

While excavating the basement, workers found over $600 in gold (gold was valued at $20 an ounce at the time)— enough to pay for the construction of

the basement. The new three-story brick structure resembled the previous Cary House; however, the beautiful filigree wrought iron railing on the second floor balcony was replaced with a thick wooden balcony.

The new hotel operated as Hotel Placerville until 1926 when it was taken over

by Raffetto’s son, Lloyd, who renamed it the Raffles Hotel after an establishment in Singapore. Lloyd completely remodeled the building and added an elevator, which still operates today and is the second oldest elevator west of the Mississippi. He also added a fourth floor to the building in 1929, which included living quarters for his family and an additional 17 rooms with private baths, a luxury at that time. Semiprivate baths were added to the rooms on the second and third floors later on.

In 1978, the hotel was designated as a historical site and purchased by Doug and Peggy Milton. The Milton’s restored the Cary House name and began a $1 million renovation and restoration—a project that brought the building’s heating and electrical systems up to code and renovated the bath facilities. The lobby was restored to its original grandeur with a mahogany staircase and reception desk and Victorian furnishings; large stained glass windows depicting the four seasons in the foothills were installed in the lobby.

In 1998, the Cary Group LLC purchased the building from the Miltons. The new owners updated and redecorated the rooms but retained the historic look of the hotel. Currently, the Cary House boasts over 40 rooms with private baths, and 60 percent of the rooms include a kitchenette.

Each room is named after a local mine, type of grape or historical figure. It is also reported that at least four ghosts haunt the premises, the most infamous being Stan Levine who was stabbed on the staircase by a jealous husband.

id you know that one in three Americans over the age of 65 falls each year? The National Council on Aging also reports that an older adult dies every 19 minutes from a fall, and every 11 seconds an older adult is seen at an emergency department because of one. The biggest risks include biological problems, like balance and vision; behavioral issues, like inactivity and alcohol use; and environmental factors, like ill-fitting shoes. “The great news is that the majority of all these risks can be reduced,” says Therese ten Brinke, project coordinator for Strategic Initiatives at Eskaton. “Sustaining a fall in the past year is the most important predictor for future falls,” says Ashkan Javaheri, MD, CMD, division head of the Geriatric Division at Mercy Medical Group, explaining contributing factors include gait and balance impairment, arthritis, vision impairment, foot problems, and neurological diseases like stroke and

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large skillet or a Dutch oven, heat the oil over high heat. Add the shanks and brown them on all sides, 5-7 minutes. Remove the meat and set aside. To make the Braising Sauce: Pour off all but 2 tbsp. of fat from the pan. Turn the heat down to medium, add the prosciutto, onions, and carrot, cover, and cook for 10 minutes, stirring often, until the vegetables are quite soft.

Put in the garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Add the wine, tomatoes and stock and bring to a boil. Put in the lemon peel, bay leaf, rosemary, thyme or oregano, and the shanks. Cover the pot and put it in the center of the oven. Bake for 1.5-2 hours, or until the meat is quite tender, turning it from time to time during cooking. Remove the shanks and cover them loosely to keep warm. Degrease the sauce and discard the bay leaves and lemon peel. Reduce the sauce by half over high heat. Taste for salt and pepper. Serve the shanks on a bed of risotto or polenta. Pour over some of the sauce, sprinkle the gremolata generously over the top and serve.

Basil Gremolata • 2 tsp. chopped lemon zest • ½ tsp. chopped garlic • 2 tbsp. chopped fresh basil • ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper • Pinch of sea salt Finely chop all the ingredients together by hand or in a food processor.

Everhart’s very low-yielding vines at their Pilot Ridge vineyard produce wines of deep color concentration, good acidity, tannins and rich flavors. This wine is no exception, with its dark ruby color and nice extraction. Aromas of black cherry, berry pie, and hints of green tea and tobacco are complemented by sweet, toasted oak aromas of graham cracker, coffee and spice. On the palate are flavors of red fruit, rich and full, with toasted oak adding complexity without taking away from the core of fruit.

The award-winning wine (it took a gold medal at the Orange County Fair Wine Competition) is balanced and has nice tannins that are firm yet not overpowering, making it a perfect pairing for most red meats or all by itself.

4 Crown Molding Myths, Debunked

ne of the most beautiful details you can add to your home’s existing architecture is crown molding. If your abode is already decorated with it—awesome! However, there are many ways you can update it to match your style more closely. And if your space isn’t already decked out in beautiful molding, we’ve come up with a few ways you can change that, including four myths that should be dispelled around the architectural detail. Partnering with local expert, Steve Menez, out of Folsom, we help you decide whether or not crown molding is right for you. (Hint: It’s right for everyone!)

Myth #1 / Ceiling height definitely matters In short: No, it doesn’t. Resident crown molding expert Steve Menez explains: “Typically ceilings as low as eight feet can be crowned. Crown molding can be stacked with other moldings to achieve a larger

profile on higher ceilings, too. Many homes built in the 1970s and earlier had lower ceilings and a much simpler architecture, with fewer angles than you see in more modern built homes from the 1980s to the present. Those older, smaller homes have a ton of character in them already, and crown molding simply brings out the beauty of the architecture all the more.”

Myth #2 / Only one molding style should be used in a home Definitely not. However, uniformity is often better. “I’ve found in the 650 homes I have installed in that most people want a traditional and simple profile, sometimes referred to as ‘colonial crown,’” explains Menez. We suggest doing a bit of research before opting for more than one molding type throughout your space.

Myth #3 / The home’s style matters when selecting crown molding

This one rings true. “Most homes lend themselves to the beauty and elegance that crown molding gives a home.

However, there are a few homes where the architecture has too many transitions in the ceiling (especially true with some vaulted ceilings), so the crown would tend to lose the flow in those rooms, as opposed to a room where all walls have continuous crown molding on them.”

Myth #4 / White is the most popular color for crown molding True again. “Ninety-nine percent of what I see painted on all moldings, including crown, is a semi-gloss white. Swiss Coffee

We were fortunate to have a group of four when I visited, and even though it’s not customary to order family-style, we made the most out of Chef Athena’s menu. The Hanford House Benny, Element Chilaquiles and Pan of Gold (French toast) were all worthy of a return visit, but the consensus favorites were the Bunker Hill Cakes, Open Faced Butte Mtn, and Italian Picnic.

A Morning Meal Worth Waking Up For

riving through Amador County’s wine region and Gold Country backroads—studded with rolling hills and wooded valleys—on Old Highway 49, my friends and I found ourselves in the historic town of Sutter Creek. Drawn in by the architecture, a contrast of small-town charm and modern living, we stopped for Saturday brunch.

Nowhere is the mix of old and new more evident than inside Element, part of Hanford House Inn. Co-owners Athena Padilla-Gordon and her husband Robert Gordon have trans-

formed the circa-1800s establishment into a contemporary dining destination, featuring an eclectic menu focused on breakfast and brunch.

The restaurant was completely remodeled three years ago, and it features a full bar that serves up mouthwatering Bloody Mary’s and handcrafted coffee drinks. Indoor seating is open and airy, with works by local artists tastefully on display, and a view of Old Highway 49; when balmy autumn mornings allow, patio seating is a comfortable alternative.

The Bunker Hill featured lemon ricotta flapjacks with a whipped ricotta topping and candied lemon zest, resulting in the best pancakes I have ever eaten—slightly crisp and not too sweet with a whipped ricotta “dollop” that was simply fantastic. The Open Faced Butte Mtn—with its maple-chili sausage, Havarti cheese and sunnyside egg on rosemary bread—was hard to share with the others, simply because I wanted it all for myself. Finally, the Italian Picnic—pan-fried polenta cakes with a balsamic mushroom medley, perfectly creamy egg yolk and arugula— brought a tasty twist to the morning meal.

What’s more, every egg I saw come out of the kitchen was perfectly cooked. Chef Athena also shared that guests of the hotel are treated to a complimentary breakfast… something to remember after a long day of wine tasting.

• 3 medium-sized organic sweet potatoes • 1/4 cup plus 3 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil • 3/4 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 2 small breasts) • 1/2 tsp. sea salt and 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper, plus more for seasoning • 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tbsp. minced chipotles in adobo • 1 tsp. dried oregano • 1 tsp. ground cumin • 2 tsp. chili powder • 2 cups spinach, wilted (see “Friendly Fangating Tip”) • 5 oz. sharp white Cheddar cheese, grated • Plain Greek yogurt (see “Friendly Fangating Tip”) • Chipotle hot sauce, optional • Cilantro sprigs, roughly chopped Friendly Fangating Tip Feel free to wilt your spinach in the microwave by putting it in a bowl with 1 tsp. water and zapping it for 20-second intervals. I like to substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream. They taste almost exactly the same, but Greek yogurt is much healthier and lower in fat and calories.

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Wash the sweet potatoes, and prick them all over with a fork. Brush the skins with 2 tbsp. of the olive oil. Place in a Pyrex dish or on a baking sheet, and bake them for 50-60 minutes or until fork-tender.

3. Place the chicken in a baking dish, rub with 1 tbsp. of the olive oil, and season with a small dash of salt and pepper. Place the chicken in the oven alongside the potatoes, and cook for 25-30 minutes, until cooked through. Set aside to cool.

4. Meanwhile, combine the remaining 1/4 cup olive oil, lime juice, garlic, chipotle pepper, oregano, cumin, chili powder and 1/2 tsp. each of the salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Set aside.

dinner date Food and Beer for the Season 5. Once the chicken is cool enough to handle, shred it with a fork or your fingers. Then combine it with the spinach, and keep warm.

6. Cut the sweet potatoes in half lengthwise, and let cool for 5-10 minutes more.

7. Increase the oven temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

8. Using a spoon, scrape out the insides of the potatoes, leaving only the skin and a 1/4-inch layer of potato flesh. (Be careful not to tear the skins.) Return the skins to the baking dish, and brush the insides with the chipotle and herb mixture. Bake for 5-10 minutes or until crisp.

9. Meanwhile, add the remaining chipotle and herb mix to the spinach and chicken, tossing to combine.

10. Once the skins are done, stuff them with the chicken mixture, top with grated cheese, and bake for another 5-10 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the skins are hot and crisp. Top with Greek yogurt, the hot sauce, if desired, and chopped cilantro. Serves 6.

I

am 52 years old and have finally come to grips with something: I’m really not very good at a lot of stuff. Don’t get me wrong: This isn’t a plea for positive reinforcement. My self-esteem is fine. Great, actually. What I’m saying is just a simple statement of fact.

My wife d does oes o ur finances, because I suck at numbers. I play but remain dreadful at golf, guitar and Call of D u t y. I ’ m i nto c raf t beer and would love to be “an expert,” but to be “an expert” you need a “good palate,” and my palate is so tone-deaf that this very magazine once got an angry call from a brewer criticizing me for the words I chose to compliment one of his beers.

But I keep trying. Despite my age, I still play rec league basketball. When my 17-year-old came to one of my games for the first time in years, I was thrilled! Here was a chance to show him the old man still has it. Now, granted, there’s no way I’m going to have the athleticism of a 22-year-old but, truth is, when I was 22 I didn’t have the athleticism of a 22-year-old. My decline had a head start.

So, in my five minutes of playing time, Sam got to see me miss a layup, shoot an air ball and get crossed over by a kid who shaves, at best, twice a month. Another example: I took up running, thinking that maybe I’d be good at long distances because, honestly, the only skill required is to not stop. But in my fourth and likely last marathon, not only did I not come anywhere close to the goal time I’d set for myself: I was outrun—as God as my witness this is true—by a lady wearing Crocs.

Even when I write, I don’t get it right: In last month’s Tom’s Take, I confidently stated Frank Sinatra’s “September Song” was written by Willie Nelson. Thank you Diane for pointing out that Willie did indeed cover the song, but it was written

by Maxwell Anderson and Kurt Weill in 1938, when Willie would’ve been barely old enough to write his name. Note to self: Fact-check, dummy.

Despite all that, I’m OK with being OK. No, seriously.

Admittedly, for most of my life I didn’t want to acknowledge my flaws. Who does? But the last several years, I’ve come to grips with them, and, surprise, nothing caved in. My wife still loves me.

Friends still call. Maybe it’s simple resignation, but I prefer to think I have accepted who I am. In some ways, I think recognizing my aptitude for ineptitude has given me insight: I now have a deeper appreciation for great musicians, athletes and smart people. I am more in awe of people who are good at creating, fixing or solving things.

In some ways, I kinda feel sorry for people for whom everything comes easy.

OK, no, that’s a lie.

But I do think more of us need to accept imperfections—in ourselves and in others.

As we near the end of what has been the most contentious political season in my memory, I think now would be a good time to keep in mind that none of us get it right all the time. Maybe if we own up to our own flaws, we’ll be a little more forgiving of the imperfections of others, because we all miss layups. We all shoot air balls. What we need to remember is, we should never be anything less than grateful for the privilege of just stepping on the court.

Though hopefully my son isn’t sitting in the stands logging onto his Snapchat account.
