rom a very young age, Cameron Park resident Mark Harris knew he was destined to set his own path in life. “Getting out of college, I looked at working for companies, but I always knew I was going to end up working for myself,” he asserts. In his twenties, he took the reins of his family’s jewelry manufacturing business in the Bay Area and after meeting his wife Kathryn, moved to Cameron Park and worked as an investor. He also began volunteering. Although he’d often done community outreach in the past, Harris found his niche in applying his background in finance to support local organizations. Halloween Spooktacular

G

rab your costume—whether sweet, scary, witch or fairy—and strut your style, ’cause it’s ghoul’s night out at the annual Downtown Placerville Spooktacular on Saturday, October 31. When the clock strikes 4 p.m., Main Street transforms into an enchanted place of costumes and candy, thanks to the Placerville Downtown Association, the City of Placerville, the Placerville Active 20/30 Club, and the Placerville Lions Club. Start the evening trick-or-treating at stores along Main Street from 4-6 p.m.; after, enjoy a DJ broadcasting family-friendly beats from the Bell Tower; families with children ages 10 and under are invited to the carnival at Town Hall from 4-6 p.m., featuring free games, prizes and treats provided by the Placerville Lions Club. At 6 p.m., gather around the Bell Tower for the costume contest. Creativity counts! The Placerville Active 20/30 Club awards prizes for the best costumes in all age groups: 3 and under, 4-6, 7-9, 10-13, 14-17 and adults. A grand prize is awarded for “Best Overall Costume.” Portions of Main Street will be closed from 3-8 p.m., and parking is available at the downtown parking garage and various City lots. ask the expert Q: Do children who attend preschool have an advantage over those who don’t?

A:

Yes! Children attending a preschool program definitely receive advantages. The staff at high-quality preschools creates a nurturing environment, which helps develop the social, emotional, cognitive and physical skills necessary to thrive in kindergarten; academically, the demands of kindergarten are high, so it’s wise to get children well-prepared while still allowing them to play and explore. Preschool teaches children to be comfortable in a group setting, separate easily from a caregiver, and have trusting relationships with other adults. Preschool also helps children cooperate with and care about other children. —Suzanne Jones, Administrator/ Curriculum Director Busy Bees Preschool, Inc. 1261 Hawks Flight Court, Suite F, El Dorado Hills 916-933-3797, busybeesedh.com

Q:

How do I choose between pet boarding and pet sitting for my dog?

foodie find

Fudge Factory Farm

M

eandering through Apple Hill with a few of my best “partners in crime” (aka friends) recently, we stumbled upon one of the best spots for the region’s infamous sweet treats: Fudge Factory Farm. We knew it had to be a mecca of chocolatey goodness when we read the sign on the wood-carved bear out front: “Chocolate Makes Life Bearable.” Sold. I felt five years old again as we darted from case to case looking at all the sugary goodness. My brain and stomach were at war: the former telling me to be sensible, the latter begging me to try five of everything. It was tough, but I compromised by choosing a scrumptious looking blackberry hand pie and three pieces of fudge: dark chocolate, caramel apple pie and English toffee. As I bit into the hand pie it was obvious that the blackberries were fresh picked, and so satisfying that I had to sit down. The fudge was even more glorious—my favorites being the creamy, rich dark chocolate and the incredibly buttery English toffee with a hidden chunk of actual toffee tucked inside. It’s not hard to see why the line winds out the door during the season’s height, and I would gladly brave the crowds for the crave-worthy confections. Fudge Factory Farm, 2860 High Hill Road, Placerville. 530-644-3492, fudgefactoryfarm.com. — Adrianna Valencia 8 styleedc.com - October 2015

A: The most important difference in boarding versus pet sitting comes down to knowing your dog. If you know that your dog does not respond well in new places, and you will be gone for an extended period of time, then have a pet sitter make a couple visits a day at your home is best. Alternatively, if boarding is the right option for you, then look for a place that has a cage-free environment where the dogs can be part of a family and be themselves. —Alicia and Josiah Ferguson, Owners Priceless Pet Sitting 3511 Meder Road, Shingle Springs 530-503-7051, pricelesspetsitting.com

5 STEPS FOR PROPER PET PLANNING Pets are part of the modern family. Historically, pets were valued minimally and bred to assist mankind in daily life—herd sheep, protect livestock, destroy pests, guard property, etc. Times have changed. Our pets are our family, so it’s imperative we think about them when designing our estate plan. With these five steps from Stephen M. Fatula of McCoy Fatula, LLP, in Roseville, you can ensure your pets are cared for no matter what.

Soul Rockin’ Songs

B

est described as a rocking blues band, the Ranell Carpenter Band has been lighting up the local music scene with their signature tunes and inspired covers that make moving and grooving nearly impossible not to do. “We’re on the rock side with a touch of country and a lot of soul— you can definitely dance to it,” says lead vocalist Ranell Carpenter. “I try to write songs where everyone will know what I’m talking about or be able to relate to in some way.” Carpenter—who was born and raised in Placerville—started singing as a teenager and writing lyrics as a child. Growing up listening to country, she began singing the blues the same year her father passed away—finding solace in the passionate genre and encouragement from the greats such as Jimi Hendrix, Etta James and Susan Tedeschi. In 2010, Carpenter met lead guitarist and co-writer Robert Foster, who at the time was a part of the band The Tombstone Taillights and happened to be rehearsing with the group on his birthday. “I heard one of the neighbor kids wanted to sing with us,

16 styleedc.com - October 2015

so I was looking around for a kid and there was this tall blonde girl,” remembers Foster. “She came up to sing and we were all blown away—what a great birthday present.” Foster and Carpenter, the remaining members of that former group, are the driving forces behind the songs the Ranell Carpenter Band produces. Often co-writing together, Carpenter will sometimes come with lyrics and no song and Foster with a song and no words; together crafting their soulful, spunky tunes. Bassist Joe Lev came on a year later, and just a few months ago keyboardist Gary Bennett joined full-time to round out the ensemble. The band performs at local favorites, such as Powell’s Steamer Co. and Pub, PJ’s Roadhouse, The Wine Smith, It’s Personal Wines and Red Hawk Casino. With Carpenter’s authentic and fun personality, sultry voice and dance moves, the group has quickly earned a loyal following amongst fans of all ages. “While I’m performing, I try not to take myself too seriously,” says Carpenter. “It’s very honest, and I love showing people the

soul that I have in me. Singing in front of others releases any pressure, any anxiety.” While expecting a new addition this fall, Carpenter hopes to use her down time during maternity leave to produce the album the band has been working on, which will be comprised of both originals and cover songs by favorites such as BB King, Jimi Hendrix and Bonnie Raitt. Once back in the full swing of things, the group will push itself even further by touring and playing at more music festivals throughout the region. For the band that’s truly become a loyal family, there’s nothing more amusing than playing together on stage and laughing along the way. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world to get to play with these guys—they’re such good people and musicians,” says Bennett. “The thing about being a good, mature player is the ability to listen. We look at each and smile and know something is going great.”

tep into any grocery store and you’ll see what seems like an endless variety of cooking oils—canola, avocado, coconut, extra virgin, the list goes on! But did you know they all have different uses in (and out of) the kitchen? “There are many types of oils, all of which are made by pressing nuts, seeds or fruits,” explains Kirsten Ransbury, MS, RD, CDE, at Kaiser Permanente Roseville. “More nutrients are retained in cold-pressed oils. [Although oils each have] their own unique flavor, with processing, many taste very similar. The main difference is in their smoke points—the temperature at which oil starts to smoke in a pan. That smoke indicates that an oil has been damaged and should be discarded.” When choosing which oil to use in the kitchen, it’s important to think about the best oil for the job and the health effects, explains Debbie Lucus, MS, RD, CDE, and a clinical health educator at Sutter Medical Foundation.

get greasy All About Cooking Oils by Kourtney Jason

Lucus also explains the oils can be lumped together based on fat types. Olive, peanut, canola and avocado oils are monounsaturated fats; grape seed, sesame, sunflower and soybean oils are polyunsaturated fats; and coconut, palm and palm kernel oils are saturated fats. Each of these oils affects your health differently. “In general, saturated fat is linked to inflammation and health problems such as heart disease and cancer, while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are linked to better heath. Most oils are unsaturated, with the exceptions of palm and coconut. Coconut oil, however, is being studied to see if it can ward off Alzheimer’s disease and [so far] doesn’t appear to 18 styleedc.com - October 2015

raise cholesterol like other saturated fats do, Ransbury says.” Lucus adds that extra virgin olive oil contains antioxidants, which are important to reducing the risk of chronic disease, while polyunsaturated fats—which contain omega-3 fatty acids (walnut, flax, canola)—have heart benefits (not lowering cholesterol, but preventing clotting risk). When it comes to daily intake, Ransbury says it’s recommended that oil be eaten in moderation—due to the high concentration of calories. “Fat found naturally in whole foods is preferable (nuts, seeds, avocado, etc.). Essential fats the body needs to be healthy can be found in abundance in flaxseed oil, hemp seed oil, walnut oil and canola oil,” she adds.

Lastly, Stephanie Dodds, a healthy eating specialist at Whole Foods Market Arden, says it’s very important to store oils properly. “Air, heat and light cause oils to oxidize and turn rancid,” she says. “This is why you’ll almost always find oil in a dark glass container, and [should store it] in a cool, dark place. If oil oxidizes, it is no longer healthy to consume. Make sure no matter what kind FOR OTHER WAYS of oil you use, it smells TO USE COOKING and tastes fresh and OILS-BEYOND THE pleasant.” KITCHEN- VISIT STYLEEDC.COM

• For baking, canola oil is a neutral flavor, so it won’t change taste. It’s also a good source of essential fatty acids. • If you do fry, you’ll need oil with a high smoke point, such as avocado, almond, peanut or safflower. When you sauté—which uses much less oil than frying—extra virgin olive oil, grape seed, canola and peanut oils are best. • For dips, dressings or marinades, go for olive, flaxseed (not for cooking), walnut or sesame oils. “These all add flavor to your food,” Lucus says.

magine a world where every girl owns at least one dress.” That is the trademark phrase of Dress a Girl Around the World (DGAN), a group that sews dresses for young girls across the globe who are living at risk and in poverty. Since the nonprofit’s beginning in 2009, it’s provided more than 300,000 new dresses to girls in 81 countries. As a program of Hope 4 Women International, a faith-based organization founded to empower women, Dress a Girl “ambassadors” are located throughout the U.S. and the world. El Dorado County’slocal coordinator is Dawn Hilton. A passionate supporter of the project, she first learned about it while attending a church concert. “Immediately, I could feel my heart going out to these young girls,” says Hilton. “The idea that making a dress could bring them dignity and hope for their future was something that I could not ignore.” Hilton shared the opportunity with her Placerville church’s leadership team, who helped her start a ministry that has grown to over 75 women, men and teenagers. The participants make dresses and assemble kits The group holds “Sew Fests” every third that include a pattern, colorful fabric and Saturday of the month at Cold Springs decorative trims. Hilton hopes to travel soon with a missionary group to hand-deliver dresses and shorts to the children. In the meantime, she happily recounts how one of her dresses made its way to a girl across the globe. “For our first Sew Fest, a couple brought a friend from the Bay Area,” Hilton remembers. “We learned that she was a missionary getting ready to head off to Ethiopia, so she took 12 dresses with her. Before she left, I asked to look through the bag of dresses; at the bottom was the very first dress I made to start the ministry and teach the informational classes. It all seemed to line up so perfectly—how exciting to know that first dress was going to Ethiopia.”

El Dorado County’s Oldest Church by Jerrie Beard

en from all occupations— blacksmiths, bankers, farmers, shopkeepers and preachers— were among those headed to the gold fields in 1848 and 1849. While many succumbed to the temptations of alcohol and gambling, others retained their morals, and the preachers gathered their flocks. In Placerville, the Methodist faith was preached by Reverend Hosford in 1848, and Reverend Joseph Meek organized Methodist churches in Coloma and Placerville. In 1851, Reverend Bateman organized a church building program, which culminated in the construction of the Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) Church on the hillside above Cedar Ravine overlooking Main Street. The church was constructed with local timber, and the finished siding was brought 22 styleedc.com - October 2015

around the Horn from the East Coast. The little church lacked only one thing—a bell—so the congregation raised funds, and two parishioners were sent to San Francisco in search of one. A suitable bell was found on the hull of a beached ship: the Straffordshire. The owner was located and the bell purchased. By 1 8 61 , the cong re g ati o n h a d o u tgrown the church, so money was raised to build a bigger one on five acres of land donated by parishioner Frank Goyan Sr., an immigrant from Engl a n d wh o c a m e to Placerville in 1853. The new brick edifice and cemeter y was located at the corner of Cedar Ravine and Main Street, where C &H Auto Parts now stands. The original wooden church was sold and moved down the hill to a foundation on Cedar Ravine where i t s e r ve d a s l i v i n g quarters; the bell was moved to the schoolhouse. In 1 920, M r. and Mrs. Charles Schaeppi purchased the original church building and donated it to the M.E. Church. It was refurbished and a second stor y was added, which served as a classroom, of fice and youth center.

In 1944, the properties of the M.E. Church and the First Presbyterian Church of Placerville merged and articles of incorporation were affected to form El Dorado County Federated Church. In 1953, the Federated Church building (located on Thompson Way) was dedicated. The brick church on Main Street was sold in 1959—along with two smaller adjoining buildings—to Art Howe who wanted the property for commercial buildings. In 1961, during the destruction of the two-story building next to the brick church, workers “suddenly came upon a startling discovery—there was a separate small building inside the one he was tearing down!” reported the Mountain Democrat on July 7, 1961. “A little more investigation determined the origin of the structure…it was the original wooden Methodist church, built in Hangtown in 1851.” John Hassler, president of the Historical Society in 1961, worked with the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce, the Historical Society and members of the community, to have the little church dismantled piece by piece and moved to land behind Federated Church on Thompson Way. One of the larger contributors was Dr. Frank Gerbode of San Francisco who had grown up in Placerville. He provided monetary support and was instrumental in locating and returning the old ship bell, which had made its way to San Francisco over the years. The refurbished M.E. Church was dedicated on July 30, 1961, and currently serves as a small chapel, meeting room and classroom.

homedesign holiday season, try brushed gold. Silver is always used in place settings and flatware, especially if you’re going for the whole caught-in-a-frosty-blue-blizzard theme, but this year we’re adding warmth. Oversized gold leaf chargers and serving trays paired with lightly colored napkins and plates add a simple flare that won’t distract from your delightful dinner.

fall in love 4 Holiday Table Décor Ideas by Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID

G

one are the days of displaying every piece of crystal and china you own and somehow tying it in with the wooden turkey figurines Grandma gave you; and no longer is a burnt orange and brown color palette necessary. This holiday season, we challenge you to try the minimalist harvest table—a design that incorporates cheeriness without the disorderly décor that’s been passed down through generations.

day season—we’re building fires, stacking firewood, and now we’re putting it on our holiday table display. Incorporate soft but distressed elements like wooden plates, napkin rings, candleholders and chargers, to give off a hearth-like vibe. To tone down the timber and soften the overall look, mix in metals and feminine linens.

1/Wood for Wood

2/Go for Gold

Wood is all around us during the holi-

If you want to play up the luxe look this

While most of us can remember our mother breaking out every holiday figurine from storage, we’re advising you to tuck away the trinkets in favor of a romantic and refined feast. Complement the elements of your dinner with simple settings like layered linens and flatware, or set out a large textured centerpiece, like driftwood or faux antlers, to play up the theme while playing down the clutter.

4/Light and Bright Following the 2015 trends, minimalism can be transferred to the harvest dinner table by simply swapping out dense, dark dinnerware for crisp, clean cutlery. To set the mood, a marble slab or tray can serve as a spot for side dishes while the holiday ham rests atop a bright white trivet. Freshen table settings with sprigs of herbs to add some sunniness and— voila—you have a heavenly holiday feast. Whether you’re looking to impress the in-laws or just need inspiration for your annual holiday dinner, these tips will steer you toward a table fit for a king (or just your family and friends).

Those looking for authentic touches will be delighted to know that they serve Pilsner Urquell on tap—a perfect pairing to one (or more) of the alluring appetizers, whether you opt for the fried cheese, sausage taster with horseradish and mustard, or our choice—the potato pancakes

I’m a self-proclaimed schnitzel specialist, and…I can confidently say that Euro Bistro’s jagerschnitzel was, hands down, the best I’ve had... (bramboraky). Similar to a potato rosti, these savory pancakes were crispy on the outside and tender inside, with delicious caraway seeds scattered throughout and applesauce served on the side. For main courses, my husband went with the beef stroganoff special, which was served with spaetzle—tiny dumpling or noodle pieces with a texture similar to gnocchi that are boiled then pan-fried and ubiquitous in German, Hungarian and Czech cuisine—while I opted for the jagerschnitzel, chicken schnitzel served with mushroom gravy and spaetzle. I’m a self-proclaimed schnitzel specialist, and I know that truly great schnitzel is hard to find. I can confidently say that Euro Bistro’s jagerschnitzel was, hands down, the best I’ve had since leaving Australia 13 years ago. Tender, juicy and beautifully crisp, I wept a tiny tear of joy. With the spaetzle and mushroom gravy alongside, I was in comfort-food heaven. My husband’s stroganoff was creamy and flavorful, and the beef was tender and plentiful. The dinner servings were impressive, too—make sure you come with plenty of belly room! 30 styleedc.com - October 2015

taste CHICKEN WAFFLE SLIDERS WITH MAPLE MUSTARD DIP This recipe comes courtesy of Shingle Springs-based food bloggers (and sisters!) Pearl Yoshitomi and Gale Hetherington. View their other mouthwatering bites and party favor ideas at bigbangbites.com. Tomato Jam • 2 cups Roma tomatoes, rough chopped • 2 tbsp. sugar • 3 tsp. apple cider vinegar • 1 tsp. sambal oelek (found in the Asian food aisle)

• About 4 chicken thighs, cut into 16 pieces to fit the mini waffles (how many pieces you get will depend on the size of the thighs) • 1/2 cup flour • 1 tsp. salt • 1/2 tsp. pepper • 1/2 tsp. paprika • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder • 1 tsp. dried parsley • Oil for frying • 1 pkg. frozen mini waffles (you’ll need 32 individual pieces) • 4 pieces of thick-sliced bacon • 16 or more mini wafflesize pieces of pepper jack cheese (for pre-sliced cheese, cut into fourths. You might need to use more than one piece if it’s thin. I used 3 pieces. If using block cheese, you can slice thicker pieces.) Combine the ingredients for the tomato jam and cook until boiling. Lower heat to medium and cook for about 20 minutes until it reaches a jam consistency, stirring constantly. Make the maple mustard dip and set aside. Cook the bacon in the 32 styleedc.com - October 2015

dinner date Food and Beer for the Season microwave according to package directions; mine took 2 minutes. Cut into fourths. Salt and pepper the thighs. Combine the flour, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder and parsley. Dredge the chicken and set aside. Heat the oil. Dredge the chicken again, and then fry until golden. While they drain on a paper towel, set the cheese on top of each piece of chicken. This will soften and warm the cheese. Toast the mini waffles according to package directions. Assemble the sliders with the cheese on the bottom, chicken, bacon and tomato jam. Serve with the maple mustard dip on the side. Makes 16 or more.

ANDERSON VALLEY BREWING COMPANY’S BOONT AMBER ALE Like many craft breweries, Anderson Valley Brewing Company—founded on December 26, 1987—had humble beginnings. Based in Boonville, CA, they started brewing out of 10 barrels in the lower level of their original brewpub: The Buckhorn Saloon. Over the years, they’ve garnered numerous awards and have expanded twice; currently, their authentic ales, balanced lagers and barrel-aged offerings are crafted in a three-story Bavarian-style house. Anderson Valley Boont Amber Ale was a gold medal winner at the 2014 Brussels Beer Challenge and is available year-round. Balance is what makes it unique—rich crystal malts lend a deep copper hue and slight caramel sweetness, while herbal, spicy bitterness (from carefully selected whole cone hops) impart a crisp, clean finish. Hints of sun-toasted grains, toffee and fruity esters complement the mellow, noble hop aroma. The combination of sweetness and spicy bitterness make it a perfect pairing for this month’s Chicken Waffle Sliders with Maple Mustard Dip; other friendly couplings include onion rings, grilled steaks, roasted chicken, pasta Bolognese and poached pears. —Zach Davies, Beer BevMologist BevMo, Folsom

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? It found me. I’ve always talked to animals—even as a child you could find me happily petting and talking to animals. Like most pet owners, I openly talk out loud to them and genuinely think they understand me. When my beloved dog Zoey passed, I was devastated, as we all are when we lose a pet. A friend asked me to join her in an animal communication class. It was tough, but I found some peace. I learned techniques to be quiet and trust my intuition. The experience was truly amazing and I discovered, through the pet owners’ validations, that I could communicate with their animals. Eventually I took more classes, read many books and practiced. It’s sort of like learning to play a musical instrument—we all have the ability, we just need to practice and trust what we’re hearing, feeling or seeing in our mind’s eye what the animals are conveying to us. I generally hear or see words and feel emotions. I have learned to trust my intuition and put my judgment aside to become the messenger. Su Wickersham That can be difficult at times, and sometimes the information needs to sit with the person until it makes sense. This can take any amount of time. Experience has shown LISTEN TO THE DOG me that if people will listen with an open mind, within a short period of time, the information Shingle Springs will make sense. From there we can take whatever action needs to take place to help the pet. 530-558-0638 What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? doglisten.wordpress.com I worked at my family’s hardware store and learned to treat others as I want to be treated, to doglisten@gmail.com be as helpful as I can, and to listen to people’s needs. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I cuddle my dog and visit my horses. I also love the ocean and go whenever I can. What’s your biggest job perk? I receive great joy in talking and meeting with people and their pets.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Sol Flow Studios is the newest yoga studio in El Dorado County. We feature FAR infrared heat to warm our space for a most intentional practice and offer several styles of yoga: vinyasa flow, yin, kundalini and holy yoga. Classes are offered seven days a week and new students can take advantage of 30 days of unlimited yoga classes for just $30. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? If you practice at Sol Flow then you see my face a lot! I’m at the studio nearly seven days a week—checking students in, mopping up, and even teaching a few classes. Community is the reason Sol Flow was created. We’ve held canned food drives, donated to a local PTO, and even hold a weekly donation-based class to benefit the kids of Sweet Dreams Foundation, which is a nonprofit that designs and builds dream bedrooms for kids fighting life-threatening illnesses. Why is your staff the best in the business? Our teachers are the most genuinely authentic leaders this yoga community has to offer. There is love in every fiber of their being, and they walk the path they teach with only their hearts leading the way. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? My two boys—they are my pride and joy, greatest blessings and biggest teachers. What’s your biggest job perk? The community! We truly have the most amazing students and teachers. It’s like watching a garden grow—we’ve built the space, planted the seeds, and have been watching things take root, growing and blooming into their full potential. And finally, customer service is…? Ensuring that a student steps into Sol Flow and knows that all sizes, all colors, all ages, all cultures, all beliefs, all types and all people are safe here. No matter where you are on your journey, you are welcome.

eneath a dusty autumn sun, the Sacramento River flows. And beneath the whorls and ripples of its impenetrable green water, the great fish return. King salmon. They’re back, invisible, save for the occasional splash on the surface or chaotic rip on a h o p e f u l f i s h e r m a n ’s rod. Otherwise, they lurk beneath the surface like restless subconscious thoughts. The Sacramento River wa te r s h e d i s h o m e to the second largest run of returning fall king salmon in the lower 48. Only the Columbia has more. This year, there will be an estimated 700,000 returning after three to four years at sea, in waters as distant as Alaska. Yep—it’s possible that the “Alaska-caught” salmon you bought for $30 a pound actually came from the Sacramento River or one of its tributaries. But don’t feel bad for not knowing— they’ve never been very good about sending postcards. so much as Siri to give an address to. And let’s not forget they’re doing this entirely underwater. At least birds have the benefit of seeing where they are. It’s utterly impossible for us to relate to—I get disoriented if I close my eyes in the shower. Not to mention that from the moment they hatch, they’ve been dodging more obstacles than a contestant on American Ninja Warrior— the jaws of predators, the poisons of pollution, fishing nets, lures (some of those, mine). I am in awe of their ability to survive. But the past few years have been a m o n g th e i r to u g h e s t te s t s ye t— returning to a watershed left low and warm by record drought. Meanwhile, the water that is left is being fought over like the last beer in a frat house fridge. Sure, as long as there are hatcheries like

Nimbus on the American River (which of course is a tributary of the Sacramento and a great place to actually see these wondrous creatures), the salmon have a chance. But studies have shown hatchery salmon don’t have nearly the survival instinct—the street smarts, if you will— of wild salmon. Born into tough neighborhoods of moving water and river gravel, wild fingerlings a r e j u s t w a r i e r. A s adults, they’re better at surviving. So the more wild salmon there are, the healthier the population will be. But wild salmon feel the impact of drought the most. They need cool water. Without it, many of the eggs will die without even hatching. But as our reservoirs draw down further and further, the task of maintaining cooler river water becomes tougher and tougher. I don’t have an answer to California’s water future or know if there even is one that works for everyone and everything. In the short-term, I hope this winter El Niño hits us like a fire hose. But in the long-term, I’m at a loss. I do know I am going to root for the salmon, and not just because I fish for them. Even if I don’t catch one (which is often), I love just knowing they’re out there. There’s something about them that’s as majestic as any redwood grove, as rugged as the Big Sur coastline, as timeless as our golden hills. It would be a shame to reach a day when their splashes are heard no more.
