Considering our mantra, “We can always improve upon the existing,” my tenure has bore witness to substantial growth in every way imaginable—what we cover, how we cover it, and the way we present it to you. The process reflects a development much like that of the maturation of a child to a successful adult, and we—the Style staff—have even referred to our magazine as “our baby.” There is, and will continue to be, great care that contributes to this beautiful, thoughtful piece of resourceful work that comes to life each month. Each month better than the previous, we hope you think anyway.

22 In History

I would be remiss not to give thanks where much is due. I first thank everyone on our team, because like any good machine, when one part is missing, everything stops. Secondly, I applaud Megan Wiskus for her undying devotion and diligence each and every day to the betterment of Style. I literally could not have done my job without her. Next, the design team: Gary Zsigo, Aaron Roseli and David Norby, as well as staff photographer Dante Fontana—I thank them profusely for putting up with my annoying idiosyncrasies, which I know for a fact caused a number of deserved eye-rolls. I proudly acknowledge Debra Linn for her great job as a mother hen who always noticed and consoled my need for attention. Then there’s Joanne Kilmartin, who started about a year before I, and is certainly the best teller of jokes I know. I would put her in my pocket and take her with me if I could. Last but for sure not least, Terry Carroll and Wendy Sipple (aka the powers that be) have supported and guided me though thick and thin, and I would not be where I am today without their presence in my life. We truly are a family here at Style, which is probably why we relate to yours so well.

his was how my night began— a somber yet optimistic Facebook post, which read: “I still write the oldfashioned way…with paper and pencil. It’s tough getting the words to flow tonight. I sit here now trying to contain my swirling thoughts in order to craft my final note to Style Magazine readers. Tear drop. It’s been nearly a decade and seems like just moments ago when I began this journey. It’s been fast, furious and fabulous.” I am leaving my post with a feeling of awe at the strong sense of community that abounds and the plentiful passion for a full life that both our region and residents exude graciously. I also leave with a rich knowledge of all that surrounds me, and great gratitude for sharing your stories.

amino resident Terry LeMoncheck came into her role as the new executive director of the El Dorado Arts Council (EDAC) after more than 25 years as an administrator for various arts advocacy organizations in Southern California. She had often dreamed of living in Northern California, so when the position at EDAC became available—she jumped at the chance. “I love the natural beauty here,” she explains. “I also love the people and the sense of doing good in the community.” Even as a child, LeMoncheck was passionate about the arts and the positive impact it could make on both communities and individuals. “I’ve always been a writer, since I was old enough to write...I have 8 styleedc.com - September 2016

a deep connection with books, writing and literature,” she shares. LeMoncheck also remains a strong advocate for the economic and cultural benefits that come from supporting the arts, and she and her team at EDAC have big plans for the coming months, including the groundbreaking exhibition Back to the Future: Fifty Years of Amazing Automotive Concept Art. The grand opening will take place October 1 at the historic Fausel House’s gallery in Placerville (for more information, visit eldoradoartscouncil.org). “The arts can help us understand ourselves, and each other,” LeMoncheck asserts, adding, “I’m just really honored to be working to support arts and culture in this county.” — Amber Foster

s summer winds down, it’s time to hoop it up with the Placerville Recreation Department! The 2017 Youth Basketball program—provides a fun experience where sportsmanship and teamwork are emphasized. Players attend one practice and one game per week (held at El Dorado High School and neighboring schools; eight total games), January through mid-March. All divisions (except Junior) play on Saturdays. Schedules will be posted online at teamsideline.com/placerville.

BOYS AND GIRLS DIVISIONS

COACHES

Pee Wee: Kindergarten or 5 years old Pee Wee: Grades-1-2 or 6-7 years old Biddy: Grades 3-4 or 8-9 years old Elementary: Grades 5-6 or 10-11 years old Junior: Grades 7-8 or 12-13 years old

As always, the program’s success depends on dedicated parent volunteers to coach more than 80 teams. If interested in volunteering as a coach or assistant coach, contact the Placerville Recreation Department. As a “thank you,” the head coach’s child will receive free program registration.

FORMAT Leagues generally consist of two halves. Teams are placed into divisions (in an attempt to keep competition as equal as possible); the first half of the season is used to seed teams and, if necessary, teams will be realigned at the halfway point. With the conclusion of the second half of the season, winners of the Biddy League receive individual trophies, and all players in the Pee Wee leagues receive participation trophies.

Sign up for discounted “early bird registration” by September 22 at 4 p.m.; the deadline for standard registration is October 27 at 4 p.m. —Julie Burnsides For more information about this program and others, visit cityofplacerville.org or call 530-642-5232.

ask the experts Q:

I’m hosting an event for 60-70 people and am not sure if anyone has dietary restrictions. What are the best dishes to serve to accommodate all of my guests?

A: When accommodating dietary restrictions, it’s always important to ask about serious food allergies—not just dietary preferences when planning your menu. A permitted professional, full-service caterer should be more than happy to accommodate special diets for guests and family. What’s more, there are very real liabilities involved should something awful occur, so make sure you’re prepared with the proper insurances. In other words, be ready for the worst-case scenario—plan ahead, ask on your invitations and RSVPs about serious food allergies, accommodate them, and make sure your caterer is in the loop fully…and fully insured. —Andy Tannehill, Director of Operations Table Nectar & Organic Catering 6642 Merchandise Way, Suite 500, Diamond Springs 530-344-7613, tablenectar.com

Way Back Bakery

art of the appeal of Way Back Bakery is in its name. Not only that it’s located way back off the street (tucked behind shops, through a lovely little garden), but also because its shabby chic, colorful décor and delectable baked goods—made from quality, fresh ingredients—takes you back to a time when things were simpler…and way more enjoyable. En-tering makes you feel like you’re stepping into Grandma’s kitchen, where you know you’ll be greeted with a smile and delicious treats. For three years now, Owner Alisa Smith has built a name for herself with her homemade cookies, muffins, custom cakes that are almost too pretty to eat, and unique variety of seasonal scones that sell out daily. These aren’t your crumbly, biscuit-like bricks some places produce; Smith’s scones are soft, fluffy and chewy on the inside with a perfectly golden crunch outside. Their newest flavor, a Lemon Rosemary Scone with Lavender Glaze, is simply divine. Breaking it open, you’ll see fresh rosemary flecked throughout and real lavender flowers atop. The brightly tart lemon pairs wonderfully with the earthy, herby rosemary, and both are rounded out with the floral sweetness of lavender glaze. Talk about a classic, timeless treat that takes you down memory lane. Way Back Bakery, 6211 Pleasant Valley Road, Unit C, El Dorado. 530-626-1900, waybackbakery.com. — Heather L. Becker 10 styleedc.com - September 2016

A: Teeth whitening is a very simple, easily available way to make teeth whiter and improve the look of your smile. Crowns, veneers and even tooth-colored fillings do not lighten as much as natural teeth when whitening products are used, and in most cases don’t lighten at all. A simple consultation with your dentist can inform you which teeth will respond the most to whitening, how to use products safely, and warn you of dangerous whitening products that actually erode your teeth and irritate gums. They can also help you learn to use whitening products to lighten natural tooth surfaces that have not become darker than your dental restorations placed many years ago. —Ryan Easterbrook, DDS 493 Main Street, Suite C Diamond Springs 530-626-5810 ryaneasterbrookdds.com

It wasn’t an easy job, and with the amount of valuables coming through the branch, it wasn’t the safest job either; some say Jackson’s best security guard was his 120-pound bullmastiff Jack.

Officially tabulated on June 18, the tally set a Guinness World Record for “most letters to military personnel collected in one month”—and was more than 10 times the amount of letters needed to set the record. The El Dorado Chapter of the DAR in Placerville helped to collect letters from friends, family and community members, and even wrote personal letters.

From September 11-18, the 40th annual World Gold Panning Championship will tap into El Dorado County’s mineralrich history—attracting hundreds of gold panners from around the country and world. Panners are timed as they pan 5-12 pieces of gold out of individual buckets of gravel, the best time advancing to the next heat until the final 30 competitors face off in finals for the title. war and peace Band of Brothers

by Heather L. Becker

body gets in their own way. Further, war and peace can be looked at internally as we cleanse, heal and grow from within. HLB: How would you describe your sound. TW: Indietronica—indie rock with electronic elements. We cover a lot of ground musically, but many of the songs [have a] dance-infused indie [sound]. NW: I believe our music to be in line with this global and spiritual consciousness that’s uprising. MC: Electric surf-rock. We all enjoy the same music, so our influences are back to the roots of the classics. HLB: Tell us about your debut album. TW: Our self-titled album will be released this month. It’s completely from the heart, no pretension. It’s set to an original sound that we’ve developed featuring solid and memorable foundations but pushes tonal exploration with electronic textures. NW: We put consideration into what serves the songs to their utmost potential, without overcooking them, ensuring to pre-serve their initial raw energy while allowing the band’s talents to fuse together and evolve with an experimental cohesiveness. It’s a beautiful album.

T

he best things in life often come organically, as it has for Weldon brothers Teo (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Nate (vocals and keyboard). Artists their entire lives, the pair began collaborating musically and soon met Michael Christofferson (lead guitar and drums) and Stephen Geller (electronic drums) and—serendipitously—War and Peace began. “With the foundation of Teo’s great compositions and the chemistry and incredible talent these new mates brought to the picture, we found ourselves expanding to new horizons and challenging our own strengths and weaknesses,” Nate shares. “You could say it felt like destiny—chapter one.” HLB: How did the band take off? TW: War and Peace began with several songs I’d written over the last couple of 18 styleedc.com - September 2016

years. I began working out how to play them live with my brother and soon after, met Stephen and Michael. The sound just came together like magic. NW: I was working on building a studio conducive to creativity and production— an artist retreat if you will—and being just uptown of Placerville, couldn’t help being drawn to the wealth of talented musicians. HLB: What’s the meaning behind the name “War and Peace”? TW: The internal war and peace encountered in my life and [that I] see in the lives of others. In no way do we endorse war, but it’s a reality we’re faced with—the dark side of life alongside the peaceful and happy. There’s also war and peace within the music itself—heavy tension building and finding release on a harmonic level. NW: War and Peace are dualities every-

HLB: What are your goals for the future? TW: We’re very open to what the future holds. It’s exciting when you feel like you’re part of something way bigger than the sum of its parts. NW: To tour the world. We didn’t make this come to life for ourselves (though we do have a lot of fun)—we made it for you! MC: Start a secluded recording studio of our own and get people out of their comfort zone musically. It’s easy to stick with the same routine, but it’s liberating to branch out, seeing different perspectives of music and creativity.

nami el dorado county Educating and Advocating for Mental Illness by Dayana Stockdale

I

n 1979, the National Alliance on Mental Health began as a small, living roombased support group for a few parents of adult children living with mental illness. It morphed into a nonprofit with hundreds of affiliate and state groups and is currently the largest advocate for mental health policy change in the U.S. “NAMI helped put together a class named “NAMI Family-to-Family” that has been taught to over 350,000 people a c ro s s t h e U . S . and a couple other countries,” says Jeanne Nelson, a leader for NAMI El Dorado County. “It’s designed for family members who have a loved one with mental illness, not the loved one themselves.” Parents, siblings and spouses of loved ones living with depression, 20 styleedc.com - September 2016

bipolar disorder, OCD, anxiety, PTSD and schizophrenia come in for six consecutive Saturday lessons. “It’s instruction-based, but we have tons of group exercises and interactions,” says Nelson. “We’re guiding people to really get inside the head of what it feels like to have a chronic mental

illness so that there is significant empathy.” Nelson and her husband teach the course in South Lake Tahoe once a year. In Placerville, the six-week course is offered semi-annually. Both locations also offer well-attended monthly support groups.

Nelson remembers well the first time she attended a NAMI group in Palo Alto. It had been a long road to find support and care, both for herself and her son. “He was on the honor role in high school,” she says of her son. “He had his own band. He was athletic and had a lot of friends,” but in his early twenties, he started to withdraw from his friends, was uncertain about choosing a major and became increasingly paranoid. “He went on to lose 30 pounds, and he was already this fit, trim kid, so it really showed. He thought his food was being poisoned.” A difficult year would pass, with the misdiagnosis of psychosis, due to cannabis, causing his increasingly challenging paranoia to expand to near life-threatening consequences. It wasn’t until her son went into rehab that someone would discover the true issue. “Twenty hours into this Southern California rehabilitation place, we get a phone call that says, ‘You need to come pick him up. We think your son has schizophrenia,’” remembers Nelson. Eventually, her son received the care he needed. “He got into the number one NAMI-voted hospital for best care in California (El Camino Hospital in Mountain View); we were really lucky because that’s where his healing began.” Discovering a NAMI support group, hearing other families’ stories and finding out how common these issues are inspired the Nelsons to get involved. Her husband now teaches Crisis Intervention Training (de-escalation techniques for dealing with someone currently experiencing a mental health crisis) to the CHP. They also offer educational outreach to nearby schools, colleges, churches and companies, man the warm hotline that receives a dozen calls a month from families in crisis, and take part in greater movements like bringing more types of psychiatric medications to pharmacies and insurance plans. Nelson’s dream is greater compassion and more open communication. “Every single person on this planet has an obligation to learn about mental health to fight stigma,” she says.

World Gold Panning Championship Comes to Coloma by Jerrie Beard National Gold Panning Championships in 1994 and again in 1997. The competitions were hosted by California State Parks, the Gold Discovery Park Association (the nonprofit for MGDSHP), and supported by local and corporate sponsorships. In 1994, Rosanne McHenry—then supervising ranger at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park—traveled to the World Gold Panning Championship in Austria to petition to bring the world event to Coloma in 1998, as part of El Dorado County’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. Once the championships we r e s e c u r e d , p a r k s t a f f w o r k e d with loc al gold panning groups to organize the event and with a county committee to incorporate festivities into the Sesquicentennial. Among the many businesses providing funding for the events was Intel, which pledged $10,000 to support various activities in the park including the championships, Gold Rush Days, Christmas in Coloma,

and Gold Discovery Day. According to the August 24, 1998, edition of the Mountain D emocrat, the championships were par t of a larger event, which included music, entertainment, living history demonstrations, a wagon train and gold panning lessons. In addition to being able to keep the gold found during the competition, competitors received a p e r s o n a l i ze d c o py o f a n 1 8 5 0 s mining claim, a souvenir participation cer tificate and a keepsake. The festivities also included an international gold symposium featuring experts on gold and noted authors of books on the discovery of gold. Approximately 500 panners hailing from 20 countries participated in the event, as 20,000 spectators looked on. The banks of the American River once again echoed with voices and languages f rom all ove r th e globe . Two loc al participants, Alan Watson of Camino and Joyce Schickling of El Dorado, were chosen as the best gold-panning contestants in the U.S.

H

istor y will repeat it self in El Dorado County from September 11-18, as the world rushes in for the 201 6 World G old Panning Championship. Gold isn’t only a part of El Dorado County’s past, but a part of its present and future, too. This will be the second time the World Gold Panning Championship has come to El Dorado County. The first showing was September 28-October 4, 1998, and was part of a three-year Sesquicentennial Celebration marking the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Coloma. Gold panning, which drew tens of thousands of would-be miners from all over the world to California in the mid1800s, is now considered a sport in many parts of the world. The World Gold Panning Championship began in 1977 in Finland. Today, participants from over 20 countries compete against one another in a competition of time and quantity. Each competitor is timed as they pan through 22-44 pounds of sand that hides 5-12 tiny pieces of gold. Times are adjusted based on the amount of gold found. In the early years, the competitions were held only in Finland. In 1981, the World Gold Panning Association was formed, made up of members from the competing countries, and the annual competition was held each year in a different member country. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park (MGDSHP) played host to the U.S.

T

he dog days of summer are slowly coming to a close, and here at Kerrie Kelly Design Lab we’re counting down the days to when the region’s tree-lined streets are golden and pumpkin spice lattes are back on the coffeehouse menu. While we’re not hanging up our swimsuits just yet, September is the perfect time to start gradually transitioning your home. From cable knit throws and seasonal prints to autumn accessories, here are a few easy ways to prepare your home for fall.

1 / Warm Palettes and Prints Nothing inspires us more than a sundrenched space. If your room gets great natural light, use it! Frame your windows with curtains that you can draw should the space get too bright, and choose a fanciful overhead light like a chandelier if your office is go-getter-glam, a table lamp perched on your desk, or a floor lamp in the corner to highlight your accolades on the wall. 24 styleedc.com - September 2016

2 / Cozy Textures We love sweater weather for so many reasons, especially for adding texture. Switch out lighter coverings for heavier ones, like a faux fur or nubby throw slung over an ottoman or bed. Cable knit isn’t limited to fashion, either—a few cable knit pillows are a cozy addition to any seating area.

3 / Autumn Accessories Accessories are an easy way to usher in a new season for every room. Switch out airy, beachy décor with nature-inspired art, deep-hued accessories and plush drapery. Full-bodied fragranced c a n d l e s co m p l e m e n t a ny mantelpiece with a warm glow and spicy scent. Replace brightly colored summer vases with ones that feature bronze or metallic accents.

4 / Outside In Use the season’s harvest to signal fall inside. We love filling our favorite wooden bowls with rusty red apples and golden pears. An oversized vessel or vase—like a vintage market find or an umbrella stand—makes a

that dresses up any table for the holidays. Tired of gourd-inspired centerpieces? Try clustering a few potted herb plants for a simple centerpiece.

State-of-the-art ICU to open this fall

BETTER CARE FOR YOU

State-of-the-Art Intensive Care Unit Debuts at Marshall Hospital in Placerville This Fall Reflects Marshall’s Accolades For Critical Care Excellence

One of the new all-private rooms in Marshall’s ICU shows the dramatic increase in space for our patients and families.

Excellent healthcare doesn’t necessarily depend on new facilities--that starts with top-notch physicians, caring, nurses and technology that keeps up with the needs of the community. Marshall Hospital’s services for the critically ill—those that need care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)—have earned this distinction. Healthgrades®, a leading national resource for consumer healthcare information, recognized Marshall as a top 10% Hospital in the Nation for critical care in 2016, for the fourth consecutive year.

SPECIAL AD SECTION

However, Marshall is always seeking to improve care and facilities to support and better reflect the excellent care already provided. Now, after years of careful planning a new, greatly enhanced ICU will soon be available. The total cost of the effort clocks in at nearly $5.5 million—a worthwhile investment for our community.

2

According to Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Krejci, the new ICU offers a number of enhancements over the former unit, which has served our patients well for many years. Chief among the improvements is simply the extra space it provides—doubling the square footage over the old ICU, which was 2,565 square feet; the new space, located on the second floor of the South Wing, boasts 5,000 square feet. |

FOR YOUR HEALTH

|

Along with the added square footage, there are more rooms and more privacy for our patients and their families. The old unit had eight rooms with two being semi-private. The new ICU has 12 rooms, each fully private and each with extra space to accommodate family and visitors during lengthy stays. In addition to the benefits the extra space affords, there are also technical and design enhancements to improve both patient care and staff safety. Each room is equipped with ceiling-mounted mechanical patient lifts for ease of movement, patient safety and staff injury reduction. The centrally located nursing station provides views into each patient room. There are also two isolation rooms equipped with air monitor alarms to ensure negative pressure is maintained for patient conditions that require this special care. The old ICU will remain licensed and equipped, offering a total of 20 Intensive Care beds when you add the 12-bed new ICU. The current unit will be used only for overflow when needed. Marshall’s new ICU reflects the excellent care it has always provided to the critically ill, with the space and amenities to match the care.

As an advocate for health and the well-being of our community, Marshall Medical Center adopted a smokefree policy for all campuses on July 1, 2016. All Marshall locations, including the Hospital and all clinic and outpatient facilities, no longer allow smoking on Marshall property. This policy includes vaporizers or e-cigarettes. “The need for this policy is clear,” says Marshall CEO James Whipple. “Our mission is to improve the health of our community, so it’s impossible to justify supporting a habit that is not only terrible for the smoker’s health, but can affect others as well. The policy change is in line with all other healthcare facilities in the region, which already transitioned to smoke-free policies.” Here are some startling facts about what smoking does to your health, courtesy of the American Lung Association • Every year in the United States, nearly 500,000 people die from tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, making it the leading cause of preventable death in our nation.

Get Back in the Game!

Award-Winning Orthopedic Care in Your Own Back Yard

W

ith the Summer Olympics just behind us, perhaps your inspiration for sports and physical fitness has gotten a boost. Granted, very few people are world-class athletes sporting Olympic medals, but that’s how the experienced surgeons at Marshall Orthopedics approach their patients—no matter their age. Stephen Cyphers, MD, President of the orthopedics group, explains the team’s philosophy: “We see people of all ages who have a broad array of orthopedic concerns and we treat each patient as a unique individual with personal fitness and functional goals, so that we can approach their case in just the way that’s right for them.” As Dr. Cyphers explains, our bodies are our own personal vehicle for living life on our terms, the way we want to and when our bodies are in pain and not functioning well, it can be depressing and debilitating. “Physical injury or degenerative problems like arthritis hamper our overall happiness; it can have a severe effect on mood, energy levels and outlook on life,” Dr. Cyphers says. “When patients come to us, they’re typically either dealing with an injury or they have wear and tear joint issues that are keeping them from doing the things they love.” Whether treatment involves physical therapy, surgery

or a combination of both, each of the surgeons on the team has focus areas that are tailored to the specific needs of our community.

When a subsequent injury tore up more cartilage in the bad knee, he turned to a Marshall orthopedic surgeon for help—and was amazed at the results. “No other surgery had helped like this one,” he recalls. “Although I followed doctor’s orders, I did start testing my cycling capability pretty quickly, and couldn’t believe the complete absence of pain I felt in just a few days post-surgery.”

DID YOU KNOW?

No Insurance? Marshall’s Financial Assistance Program Can Help Even with laws mandating medical insurance coverage, some people still struggle to find affordable healthcare insurance and go without. If this applies to you, know that assistance is available for hospital or emergency room services at Marshall Medical Center. Marshall’s Financial Assistance Program is intended to significantly discount or even eliminate the amount you owe. Program qualification is based on Federal Poverty Guidelines. To be eligible, your family must not make more than

350% of the guideline for your family size (for a family of four, that’s over $80,000 annually). Depending on a family’s financial position, charges for hospital or emergency care can be drastically reduced to just a small fraction of the bill, or even eliminated entirely. Program details, eligibility information and the application are available at marshallmedical. org (visit the link PAY/GET FINANCIAL HELP from the home page); or you may call 530-626-2618 or visit in person at 3177 Turner Street, Placerville.

Goossen Awarded Helping Hands Honor Wendy Goossen, director of Cancer Services, was awarded the 2016 Helping Hands Award at the White on White event in June. A champion for cancer patients, Wendy founded the “Images of Hope” program in 2012 providing art classes and movement therapy for cancer patients. Wendy’s determination and passion originated the now-annual event, Pink in the Night, to illuminate Placerville store-fronts decorated with strands of pink lights, symbolizing a united fight against breast cancer. The October event each year combines an exciting Mammo Man contest. Along with her good friend, the late Lee Turner, she created the White on White events that promote awareness of all cancers while raising funds for “Images of Hope.” In 2014 Wendy brought a smile to everyone’s face when she developed Marshall’s Canine Companion program and introduced us to our four-legged friend “Max.” Today, patients receive encouragement to help reduce stress and pain levels as Max gives unconditional love, security, and companionship. t the far end of Broadway in Placerville sits the aptly named restaurant, Thai Unique, which—to my knowledge—is the only Thai eatery in town. Being the only restaurant of its ilk, and the fact that they serve delicious food, make Thai Unique a popular destination…if the evening I visited was any indication. The natural wood interior is as warm and inviting as the friendly staff. My companion and I ordered the papaya salad with shrimp for our initial course, and were soon greeted with a colorful plate of crisp green papaya, sweet shrimp, chopped and sliced green beans, tomatoes and peanuts—all tossed in a light dressing with just the right balance of sweetness and acidity. Our next dish was something I had not seen in any Thai restaurant before, including Chef David Richter’s celebrated Pok Pok in Portland, Oregon. Tod Mun Kao Pod—a Thai version of a

I have to mention here that the kitchen will prepare your dishes at any heat level you desire. I like to taste my food, so medium worked for me. We finished with a Thai classic, duck curry, featuring tender slices of duck breast in a red curry and coconut milk sauce with eggplant, potatoes, pineapple, bell peppers, onion and sweet basil. Poured over their perfectly cooked, delicate white rice resulted in the quintessential cure for my curry craving—and left me anticipating my next visit to this El Dorado County hotspot.

taste GARLIC-HERB SPAGHETTI SQUASH WITH LEMON Living the Mediterranean Diet by Nick Nigro and Bay Ewald with Rea Frey (Ulysses Press, 2015, $21.95)

• 1 large spaghetti squash
 • 1⁄4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
 • 3 large garlic cloves, minced
 • 2 tbsp. minced fresh basil • 1 tsp. fresh thyme leaves • 1 tsp. minced fresh oregano
 • 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice (about 1 small lemon)
 • 1⁄4 cup shaved ParmigianoReggiano • Black pepper Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Start by cutting the spaghetti squash in half. Spaghetti squash is notoriously difficult to cut, and there are numerous ways to do it. Some swear by placing it on the counter and hacking it in half with a sharp butcher knife. Others cut off both ends and slice the squash while it’s standing. We use a sharp serrated knife and take our time rocking the knife in and out, leaving the stem on so as to use the hollowed-out squash as a bowl. Regardless of how you get there, once your squash is in half, scoop out the seeds and discard them. Drizzle the inside with olive oil and season with sea salt and black pepper. Place skin-side up on a baking sheet, 52 styleedc.com - September 2016

dinner date Food and Beer for the Season and bake in the oven for 35 minutes. Remove from the oven, flip the halves over so that the flesh can breathe, and let cool for about 15 minutes. Once cool, use a fork to scrape the squash strands out, as if scooping. Set aside on a large plate or flat surface. Heat the 1⁄4 cup olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic, basil, thyme, oregano, spaghetti squash and lemon juice. Sauté for about 10 minutes, or until the ingredients are fully incorporated. Remove from heat and garnish with black pepper and shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serves 4.

KNEE DEEP BREWING COMPANY WET WITTEE Knee Deep Brewing Company was one of the first Sacramento breweries to make a splash in the craft beer community. Although they tend to focus on IPAs, this 5.3-percent ABV Belgian-style white ale is just as satisfying as any of their award-winning, hop-forward IPAs. Well-balanced and very sessionable, with a lovely hazy-blonde hue, it holds a little bit of citrus zest, making it a perfect pairing with this month’s Garlic-Herb Spaghetti Squash with Lemon. Light and refreshing, the beer still holds complex and interesting flavors without taking away from the deliciousness of the delicate meal. —Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles Pub & Eatery

The oblong spaghetti squash is a truly magical food. Often when we eat pasta, we feel the need to combat the carbs with lots of veggies or a lean meat. Spaghetti squash gives us the same pasta-type feel, yet we love to mix it with nothing but the beautiful simplicity of fresh herbs, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil. And of course, the Parmigiano-Reggiano is the final—and most important—ingredient to this lovely yellow treat.

LEES’ FEED AND WESTERN STORE 4110 Mother Lode Drive Shingle Springs 530-677-4891 leesfeed.net

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Shade Black is a full-service interior design and remodel firm. We specialize in upscale residential design and have experience in hospitality design, new construction design, remodel design and project management. We understand the impact your visual environment can have on your happiness and value of life, which is why we are so passionate about and dedicated to helping our clients create a space they love. Shade Black’s love for beautifully designed spaces and unique furniture pieces give us a design perspective that allows us to create a design that is fresh, yet timeless. My longtime passion for interior design and furniture led me to it. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I grew up in El Dorado Hills and have lived in the Sacramento area almost my entire life. Once a month, I give a “shout out” and feature a local business on my blog. My fiancé and I have also signed up to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? My parents. They are a great balance of business and creative and have each taught me so many great things. I’m the person I am today because of them. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I go on a run with my black Lab/German shepherd mix, Shade; he’s also who my business is named after. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? I love my aesthetician and good friend, Stacy, of Stacy’s Place in the Palladio. I would never let anyone else touch my eyebrows! Second is Amanda (also a good friend) of Blush in the Palladio. She’s an amazing hairstylist! And finally, customer service is…? All about the relationship. You need to listen to your client to learn how to make them happy.

Do you know that our editorial is not paid for, nor can it be purchased? In fact, our Introducing and Dine reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

Answers by Cori Avila Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? We’ve always had clothing in our ranch store, but it was mixed in and lacked flow—sometimes next to feedbags or chicken supplies. We felt like it was intruding on the feed store. One day, our dad started cleaning the storage area in order to lease it out again. I suggested we expand and move the clothing to its own space—the former storage area. The next day, he was ripping out ceilings and floors; five months later, we had Lees’ boutique. Why is your staff the best in the business? We have five women, including Tegan and myself, who love fashion and helping women feel beautiful in their clothing. All of us take the time to help customers pick out outfits, bring sizes and help accessorize outfits…with a smile. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I turn to the three most important men in my life: my husband, who always grounds me and gives me solid advice; my dad, with whom I usually see eyeto-eye with on most things; and my brother, who’s always straightforward. What’s your biggest job perk? Since we opened our boutique a year-and-a-half ago, Tegan and I have not had to shop anywhere else. We try to hold off for a week after a new item comes in, but if it’s still there after, it’s ours! What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Well, it’s not quite eating out, but Urban Yogurt in Shingle Springs—coconut or banana! And finally, customer service is…? Everything! Anybody can sell clothing, but it’s the service that sets us apart. Helping women shop is the best part of our job.

5 September Sing-Alongs by Tom Mailey

H

5 / Neil Diamond, “September Morn” Sure, it may be cliché to include this one from Neil at the height of his glorious late’70s glittery-shirt days, but when he’s able to wring every ounce of drama from lines like… September morn Do you remember how we danced that night away? Two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play September mornings still can make me feel that way.

…how can you not include it? So I did. Sorry, not sorry.

4 / Frank Sinatra, “September Song” Yep, Frank’s got two songs about September. This one,

58 styleedc.com - September 2016

writ te n by Willie Nelson back when he was known primarily as one of America’s best songwriters, is about romance…or the lack of it…sung from the point of view of a guy who is fine with a little flirting in spring and summer, but he’s getting a little impatient that he hasn’t yet found that special someone to help keep his furnace stoked, so to speak, as winter draws near. Oh, it’s a long, long while from May to December But the days grow short when you reach September When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame One hasn’t got time for the waiting game

goes right to your heart. And when your dad happens to be Johnny Cash, well, you ask him to join you on this gorgeous reflection from 2003 about what it means to have a loved one in the autumn of their life. When the shadows lengthen And burn away the past They will fly me like an angel to A place where I can rest When this begins I’ll let you in September when it comes

1 / Earth, Wine & Fire, “September” 3 / Green Day, “Wake Me Up When September Ends” This beautiful, mournful ballad could be interpreted as someone recalling the end of a long-ago summer romance, but singer Billy Joe Armstrong actually wrote it about the death of his father when he was 10, as spelled out by the heart-wrenching lines. Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends Like my father’s come to pass 20 years has gone so fast Wake me up, when September ends

2 / Roseanne and Johnny Cash, “September When It Comes” For anyone with an aging parent, this one

Let’s end this playlist on a high note, shall we? The beat. The horns. Those falsetto “ba de yas”…this one gets you swaying like an autumn wind through the branches of a Lake Tahoe aspen grove. No month has ever had a better anthem. Say do you remember Dancin’ in September Never was a cloudy dayyyyyyyy.... It’s stuck in your head now, isn’t it? Mine too. If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna pop it on the stereo now and go rake some leaves.

ave you ever noticed how many songs there are about September? Seriously. Look it up. I stopped counting at 20. Maybe it’s as simple as September rhyming perfectly with “December” and “remember,” or maybe it’s because September is a fulcrum of sorts—the pivot point as summer turns to fall…the shorter days and longer shadows…the hint of a chill in the air. As we say goodbye to summer and all its joys—including, perhaps, a summer romance—and with looming gloom of winter ahead, songwriters, it seems, tend to get a little introspective. Melancholy, too—many of the songs deal with loss or impending loss. No matter. September has inspired some classic songs. Tony Bennett, “Maybe September.” Carole King, “It Might as Well Rain Until September.” Frank Sinatra, “September of My Years.” As you head out this month to hit Apple Hill, take in the fall colors of the Sierra, or if you’re just feeling a little introspective, here are five songs about September that should be on your playlist.
