After reading this month’s feature, “Be Wine Wise” by Megan Wiskus—a treasure trove of wine secrets straight from area connoisseurs—my mouth will not stop watering. Might I have a wineloving problem? hen Shingle Springs resident Rochelle Franco was just fo u r ye a r s o l d , d o c to r s discovered a mysterious scar on her left cornea. Although her vision was already mildly impaired, it soon became clear that she would lose all vision in that eye.

Fortunately, Franco was able to receive a replacement cornea from a donor, and her vision was recovered. “I’m so grateful for that gift,” she shares. “It allowed me to have a normal upbringing.”

Nowadays, Franco is an admission and records evaluator/degree auditor at Folsom Lake College. She is also the recipient of the 2015 Classified Employee of the Year Award, yet despite her busy schedule, Franco remains a passionate advocate for blood and organ donation.

Every two weeks she donates platelets to BloodSource Folsom (bloodsource.org).

“On my last donation, I hit the 25-gallon milestone,” she says with pride. Franco volunteers every Sunday at BloodSource

Folsom, and occasionally for other area blood drives, including Sierra Donor Services. “I’m blessed with good health,” she explains. “It motivates me to be able to give to someone who needs platelets, such as people going through chemotherapy.”

In fact, she is such an avid blood donor that she even got vanity license plates with the word “DONOR” on them. “[Giving blood] is so easy,” Franco enthuses. “I wish more people would do it!”

not-so-hidden staple in the hills of Shingle Springs, Gold Harvest Market serves up tasty breakfast and lunch sandwiches for both regular customers and out-of-towners stopping by to fuel up. And, like all local favorites should, the busy cooks behind the counter offer a side of friendly conversation and hospitality as you order, making a newbie like me feel like one of the patrons. When I asked which sub was superlative, one of the cooks responded that if I’m looking for a meal with a lot of meat, I should try the Steak Sandwich, which comes complete with grilled onions, tomato, lettuce, avocado and mayo. I nodded my head with a confident “yes please,” and he whipped me up a lunch big enough to feed two hungry adults. Complete with a giant fountain drink (I decided on iced tea) for only $5.99, I could undoubtedly see why this place is so popular.

What could be better than a huge meal for only a few bucks? Oh I know: the sandwich itself! Juicy chunks of steak mingled with zesty grilled onions, and the mayoavocado combo made my taste buds jump for joy. When buying a used vehicle, the vehicle history report is essential! Do not buy a vehicle unless you’ve seen the report, as it helps determine five important things: 1. That there’s no salvage history. (I don’t recommend buying a salvaged vehicle.)

2. That the miles are accurate and have not been “rolled back”—make sure there are no inconsistencies in the mileage.

3. How many owners it’s had.

4. Where it originated from.

5. If it has ever been in an accident.

I highly recommend spending the $40 on a Carfax report at carfax.com. It can save you in the long run!

Q: What are dental sealants and what do they do?

A: A sealant is a thin, plastic-like coating that’s applied to the top chewing surface of teeth with deep grooves, typically to the back baby or adult teeth. The deep grooves on teeth create little traps for plaque and debris, which toothbrush bristles can’t always reach. These areas are highly susceptible to cavities, but sealants help shield these grooves so cavities can’t form. Sealants are considered a preventive measure, so they need to be applied before there is a cavity present.

In September of 2006, Pat Barron, brother of domestic-violence victim Kacie Barron, led the very first Kacie’s Ride for Hope to End Domestic Violence in Placerville. What started as a small motorcycle ride to raise awareness has evolved into a powerful event with a powerful message. Julie Sena, community affairs administrator at The Center for Violence-Free Relationships, shares how the event has expanded. “In 2006, about 75 riders took off from the parking lot of a local business for a little putt through the mountains; in 2014, nine years later, over 500 riders closed down Placerville’s Main Street for the takeoff.” As more and more come to spread awareness, the ride and concluding event—which now 10 styleedc.com - September 2015

Amount of gold that Mr. Wilson, a 49’er in the Coloma area, struck it rich with—right after the birth of his son in 1849. The birth became a running joke with the miners, when they invited each other to go see “Wilson’s 10 pound nugget”; miners walked for miles to see the incredible find. It was said that setting eyes upon the newborn baby “nugget” would bring them good luck.

The year that Green Springs Ranch in Rescue was established, one of the oldest documented pioneer settlements in El Dorado County, according to Rescue Historical Society. Owned by the Dormody family beginning in 1854, the then 1,000-acre ranch was a thriving traveler retreat and a popular wedding spot.

The land was purchased from the Dormody Estate in the 1950s; by the ’70s, it was divided into smaller parcels. Green Springs Ranch, the unincorporated community, now sits on one of the larger parcels.

The year a B-17 “Flying Fortress” crashed in Tells Peak due to bad weather during a routine flight from Salt Lake City to Sacramento. A nine-person crew manned the bomber—eight survived by parachuting to safety, but, unfortunately, the pilot died. The crash site and wreckage remains to this day, preserved for its historical significance by the United States Forest Service.

5 Dehydration Myths

our body needs water to do everything—from keeping you cool to helping your heart pump and digesting food. Drink too little and your body won’t function well. Think you know what it takes to be water wise? Read on as local doctors debunk five dehydration myths.

“There are no studies that actually support this,” says internal medicine physician Anthony Retodo, M.D., medical services director at Kaiser Permanente Folsom Medical Offices. He says determining how much water you need depends on your daily activity, exercise level and diet, as well as your personal physiology and how much fluid your body needs to keep cool.

Myth 2 / You Can’t Drink Too Much “It is certainly possible to drink too much, [which] leads to the issue of hyponatremia in exercisers who overhydrate,” says sports medicine specialist Jeffrey Tanji, M.D., associate medical director of the Sports Medicine Program at UC Davis Health System, explaining hyponatremia refers to low sodium in blood serum, which is typically lost by sweating and then replaced by drinking lots of plain water. With symptoms like passing out, weakness, confusion and loss of consciousness, hyponatremia can be a medical emergency.

Myth 3 / All Drinks Are Created Equal “Water [is] fine for shorter, easier workouts of up to 45 minutes where you’re not sweating a lot,” says Roopinder Poonia, M.D., a nephrologist for Mercy Medical Group, a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation. “However, if you’re doing a more high intensity activity or workout where you’ll be sweating a lot, especially in warmer w e a t h e r, h a v e a sports drink.” That’s because sports drinks have electrolytes— dissolved minerals like sodium, calcium and magnesium, as well as carbohydrates, which are quickly absorbed in the bloodstream.

• Know the symptoms of mild dehydration such as thirst, dry mouth, weakness and headache.

• Make sure your urine is clear to pale yellow; dark yellow urine indicates dehydration. an optimal balance,” Dr. Poonia says. Or, consider sipping coconut water, which Dr. Tanji calls, “a naturally occurring sports drink with the proper mixture of water, electrolytes and carbohydrates.” You might want to reach for chocolate milk too since, as Dr. Tanji notes, it has leucine, an amino acid that helps the body recover from exercise. Stay away from caffeinated drinks and alcohol, which can actually cause dehydration, and avoid juices since their high sugar content can upset your stomach.

Myth 4 / Only Drink Water When You’re Thirsty Don’t wait to be thirsty to start drinking H2O! “You must be proactive about drinking to avoid getting behind,” says Dr. Poonia, noting the body loses water all the time through sweating, breathing, urine and stools. “Staying hydrated is particularly essential if you’re out in the sun, doing physical activity, or working in the heat,” he says.

Myth 5 / Replenish Fluids After You Exercise It’s smart to quench your thirst after exercising, but it’s better to drink before and during your workout too. “The way to know if you’re drinking enough water is to simply weigh yourself before and after you exercise,” says Dr. Retodo. “If your weight is the same, then you are drinking enough.”

through a separate organization. Enter PSVRR, which currently runs excursion trains along the same rail lines served by the original Sacramento Valley Railroad a century ago.

They are separate organizations in principle, but one in practice—together they work to preserve the area’s rail history and educate the public on the role trains played in building California. Within that, Folsom has the distinction of being the terminus for the first railroad built west of the Mississippi. (Ever see the name “Theodore Judah” and wonder who he was? He’s the man who got the railroad built.)

Today, PSVRR runs several excursion trains and events that bring the railroad to life, and FEDSHRA holds the popular Folsom Handcar Derby every May. This month, from September 26-27, the sixth annual Folsom Railroad Festival—a free family event showcasing “anything on wheels,” along with train rides, music and three convention rooms of model trains—takes place along Placerville Road (across the street from Hampton Inn) in Folsom. The arrival of fall also brings a special excursion train, the “Pumpkin Patch Flyer” (the last two weekends of October), which carries families from Folsom to Willow Hollow Pumpkin Patch and back. That’s in addition to several regular excursions every month, including the “Latrobe Breakfast Special,” a monthly one-hour trip from Folsom to Latrobe, where passengers enjoy a pancake breakfast at Latrobe’s Community Hall.

The idea of it all is to keep local residents in touch with our area’s rail history and invite them to get involved in preserving it. Family memberships in FEDSHRA are just $48 per year, while individual active memberships are $24 per year, and all proceeds from memberships and excursions go back into maintaining the railroad and museum. New additions to the all-volunteer staff are also welcomed, to help with the business side of running a railroad, maintaining equipment and staffing the museum.

“W

hisky is for drinking, water is for fighting over,” a quote attributed to Mark Twain in the late 1800s, is still applicable today, especially as the drought drags on. Water, or the lack thereof, has impacted the development of the Sierra Nevada since the days of the Gold Rush.

Envisioning El Dorado County as a summer destination for America’s wealthy in the 1920s, A.T.P. Elder built a luxury hunting resort on the Georgetown Divide deep in what he termed the “forest primeval.”

Elder was a businessman from the East Coast whose successful ventures included a thriving Boston newspaper and the completion of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco. With a fat bank account and a dream of developing a sportsman’s paradise, h e purchase d 35 0 acres northeast of Mosquito where he placed the Michigan Hunting Lodge, renaming it Deer View. The building was originally a display at the 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. After purchasing it, Elder had it dismantled, shipped by mule train to his property, and reassembled.

He and his wife Emma entertained wealthy friends from the East Coast and Southern California at Deer View each summer. The lodge had indoor plumbing, and electricity generated from the flow of two springs. It boasted a dining room, large central gathering room with a double fireplace and nine bedrooms.

In 1921, Elder traveled to San Francisco to confer with an architect to build a much grander hostelry next to Deer View—the Hotel Bret Harte. The four-story, 250-room property was designed to rival the best

by Jerrie Beard hotels in San Francisco. It had electricity, hot and cold running water, and most rooms featured a private bath—a luxury at that time; it also included a dining room, grand ballroom, large kitchen, wine and root cellars and a veranda that ran the length of the building.

Estimates are that Elder spent $250,000 (over $3 million today) on the construction of the hotel. The building included an

estimated 10,000 tons of material, including five million board feet of lumber.

The site was to include orchards, gardens, pastures for livestock, trout ponds, and cement outdoor swimming pools. For entertainment, trained guides would assist in deer, bear or mountain lion hunting and trout fishing. The hotel was also promoted as a healing destination, providing the healthy spring water and fresh mountain air.

Elder repeatedly petitioned the residents of Placerville to support his venture by replacing Mosquito Bridge and improving the road from Placerville to the hotel, considering it took four to five hours to travel by auto from Placerville to the lodge over the existing muddy and rutted road.

He was confident of the positive economic impact the hotel would have on Placerville, saying that, when built, his lodge would “…cause 20 dollars to circulate among the merchants and the entire people to one dollar circulating now.”

To finance his dream, Elder devised a plan to sell memberships to the hotel.

According to Bob Bergantz, who worked on the property, Elder planned to pack the hotel during its grand opening and sell memberships to 500 of his friends and acquaintances to demonstrate the viability of the venture. He then planned to sell it to investors from Los Angeles. His untimely death in May 1924, prior to the hotel’s completion, put an end to the scheme.

Elder’s wife and children had no interest in completing the project. Furnishings and fixtures were sold, many finding their way into the homes of local residents, and the structure was left to ruin. In the winter of 1937, the roof collapsed. Michigan-Cal Lumber Co. acquired the property in 1941, and the building was razed. Today, only the stone foundations remain.

rawing and painting on the unusual medium of gourds, Charles Munroe expertly works with their organic elements, down to the texture and grain, unique contour and shape, and even the blemishes.

As a result, he creates three-dimensional works of art that capture the history and culture, while also preserving the people and traditions, of the Washoe tribe. Having played the harmonica for years and dabbling in guitar, the Pollock Pines resident has always been drawn to art.

HLB: What are you currently working on?

CM: I’ve been exploring oil on panels and canvas, fueling my desire for expression that, for decades, has been bound up inside me.

I also find joy and tranquility in working on gourds and drums with pencils and gouache.

There’s a place inside me where I travel back and forth between contrast and color. My goal is to create vibrant, distinctive, almost renaissance-like experiences for the viewer, and my hope is to bring a supernatural feeling to every painting, every created piece.

HLB: What inspires you most?

CM: The idea that art can help revive dying cultures, bring about positive change, and heal people’s lives. Using my art to help preserve the Washoe culture is a perfect example.

HLB: Who or what are your major influences?

CM: The innovative mind and creativity of my father who was an accomplished commercial artist. Also Salvador Dali, for his ability to think and express outside the norm. Seeing the growth in my own art over the years inspires me the most!

HLB: How do you avoid artist’s block?

CM: I’m always working on two or three pieces in various stages—even different mediums—at any given time. This allows flexibility in growth and helps prevent stagnation. Keep moving on something creative every day for at least one hour—this will help build consistency and keep you going. Stopping for prolonged periods is like trying to jump-start an old car with a worn-down battery. washoegourdproject.com

on Runtenelli got his start by apprenticing for a Navajo silversmith in Lake Tahoe. He would cut turquoise for him in exchange for metalwork lessons. The artist then took those basic skills to the Bay Area where he signed up for various workshops, studied under a European master jeweler, and even owned his own custom jewelry store in the Berkeley area. Runtenelli—who works in both silver and gold while utilizing techniques fabrication, hand forging of metal, wax carving, lost wax casting, as well as lapidary—now features his stunning geometric and nature-inspired pieces at the Gold Country Artists’ Gallery and The Artery in Davis. After winning numerous awards in local and regional shows, including the San Francisco Art Festival, what the artist enjoys most about creating is the happiness and joy he knows his jewelry will bring.

HLB: Who or what has been most influential?

RR: My early influence was Native American design. Recently, I’ve been inspired by oriental design and architecture. My work would be considered contemporary.

HLB: How do you interpret that inspiration into a piece?

RR: I’ve always been inspired by nature.

As a little kid, I used to sit in gravel roadways and break open rocks to see the sparkles inside. A few years ago, I was introduced to a beautiful rock called ocean jasper from Madagascar. I acquire small pieces and slabs and cut and polish each stone to bring out its natural beauty and then fabricate a setting for it.

HLB: What’s your life motto?

RR: “Go with your heart and gut”—they won’t let you down.

HLB: Have you struggled with your jewelry making?

RR: I find that when I’m struggling with a project, if I just put it aside for a while and go back to it, I’ll have a different perspective. I’ve had a piece sit on my bench for months sometimes before I could finish it. goldcountryartistsgallery.net September 2015 - styleedc.com 27

arlotta Tormey learned to paint when she was just four years old, alongside her grandmother, who’d set up still life and portrait sessions with little Tormey as a model. Years later, after working as an award-winning commercial illustrator in the Bay Area, Tormey settled in Placerville. Her gorgeous watercolors—many featuring scenes of historic Hangtown—can be viewed at the Gold Country Artists Gallery. “Do what you enjoy,” says Tormey. “Every artist has something to say—don’t let someone else determine who you should be.”

HLB: Did you always want to be an artist?

CT: Art was all I ever wanted to do. I would draw everything, from floor plans to new illustrations for the books I read.

HLB: Why watercolor?

CT: I work in watercolor primarily, but have used all mediums over the course of my career. When working on watercolor paper, you work from light to dark, which requires thinking and planning. If you get color in the white area, it’s kind of a fail, as there’s no paint as bright as the white of the paper. That’s the challenge—it’s both enjoyable and absorbing.

HLB: If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

CT: Likely a swashbuckling history teacher.

HLB: Do you have regrets?

CT: I might’ve wished I’d done something differently, but regret? No. Every misstep— whether in art or life—can be learned from or improved upon. I’ve heard it said, “Hindsight is the devil’s mirror.” Thinking about every mistake can paralyze you.

HLB: What’s your favorite thing about Placerville?

CT: The clouds that pop up over the Sierras are spectacular, as is meeting the visitors who come from all over the world to visit our little town. Main Street offers a wealth of entertainment and pleasure, too—from the ages-old hardware store and the Doc Wiser Overland stagecoach rides, to the shops, restaurants and the art galleries that offer a variety of expression and creations in all mediums. This is a very supportive community for the arts and self-expression.

riginally from Southern California, Mike Bagdonas didn’t focus on his art until after a career in public service, yet it was always something he used to deviate from workday demands. Having studied at the California Art Institute, Bagdonas hasn’t wasted time carving a name for himself—winning several awards in both national and international level competitions. Bagdonas also teaches local workshops in plein air, parading his affection of the surrounding region’s pristine beauty.

HLB: What inspires you most?

MB: The ruggedness of our Western landscape. I see this in our national parks and bluffs along the coast above Big Sur. American Indians—who explored without roads and freeways before us—truly understood this ruggedness! When I paint in the mountains and along this coast, I feel the struggles they endured that allow us to enjoy our landscape today. I feel I’m preserving that heritage through my paintings.

HLB: What advice do you have for young artists?

MB: Follow your heart and never give up. Remember the saying, “starving artist.” It’s true—it’s very difficult to make a living in fine art at the beginning—but you can also have another career and still strive to be an artist. I did it and so have many others. Even if you don’t become a professional artist, art is something [you can do] for the rest of your life.

HLB: What award are you most proud of?

MB: An “Artist Choice” award I received at a plein air painting event in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. My wife and I hiked into the wilderness to an elevation of nearly 11,000 feet. I painted a mountain lake scene with wind and rain trying to ruin my day, while my wife held an umbrella. MB: I’ve been artistic my entire life. I started painting over 40 years ago with acrylics. At that point I was self-taught and knew little about the nuances of the various mediums. One day I decided to try oils because I heard they had more luminosity and fell in love. I’ve tried every medium since and always return to oil.

I’d usually get a triple. The pastry case was stocked daily with muffins, scones and bagels. When my mom was alive, we’d take her there because she loved the lemon bars…LOVED them. Sometimes she’d order two. Hey, when you’re in your 80s, you can do that.

What happened? I’m not sure, but a major coffee chain opened a drivethrough-only stand at the other end of the plaza. I would marvel at the number of cars that would queue up in front of that place, when Pipeline was only another 100 yards away. Did they not know? Was actually getting out of the car that much trouble?

What I do know is, owning a business is tough. A Gallup poll shows 50 percent fail over the first five years. Other polls indicate as many as four out of five small businesses fail within 18 months. No matter how you look at it, it’s daunting.

If you own your own business, my hat’s off to you. You’ve got more courage than me. What’s more, you’re part of

the real engine that drives this country.

Forget headline-grabbing multi-national corporations and dot-com start-up zillionaires: The American economy starts with small businesses. The 2010 census says there were over 27 million small businesses in America, and according to the Washington Post, those with 50 employees or less account for a third of all jobs in this country.

I don’t know where Tim is now, but I hope he and those he employed land on their feet. I hope the kids in those bands find somewhere else to play. And I hope if you’re out looking for coffee today—or anything else for that matter—that you consider visiting a small business first.

They’ll be happy to see you. And they’ll sincerely appreciate your patronage.

y favorite coffee place closed down recently. I’d visit Pipeline (which used to be It’s a Grind) two, sometimes three times a week after waking in my usual stupor from the daily nap I take—because getting up at 3:30 a.m. every morning kinda sucks.

But one day this spring, there was a small, handwritten sign on the door saying they were no longer in business. The note was brief, written on a small scrap of paper. There was no explanation, just an apology for the inconvenience and “a sincere thank you” to regular customers for the years of patronage.

Just like that. Done. I peered inside.

The pastry case was empty. Shelves behind the counter were mostly empty, too. Tables and chairs were still there, though, and a newspaper still lay folded on the arm of an old couch by the window.

I knew the owner, Tim, by name but not much more. Over the years we’d made a lot of small talk. He was nice but always busy. He was there a lot. He used to have live music on the patio out front on weekend nights—local artists. Most were young, maybe their first time in a band.

They usually weren’t all that bad. Or good. But Tim was giving them a chance to perform, and if nobody in the coffee house came outside to listen, they had a captive audience whenever the westbound FOR MORE TOM’S TAKES AND... light on Foothill at Pleasant WHAT’S COMING Grove turned red.
