They also cite a staggering statistic of approximately 2.7 million of those animals being euthanized. hen Cameron Park resident Bob Jerauld was growing up in the years following the Great Depression, the idea of one day owning and flying his own plane seemed an impossible fantasy. His family’s house was right under the flight path for McClelland Air Force Base, and he remembers fondly watching planes take off and land, all while assembling model planes and dreaming of one day sitting in the pilot’s seat.

While attending college, Jerauld swapped his mechanic skills for flying lessons, hoping to one day become an aerospace engineer, but the Korean War intervened, and he ended up enlisting in the U.S. Air Force.

“I had a pilot’s license,” he explains. “I went in hoping to go to flight school…

but they didn’t need pilots—they needed mechanics.” After four years as a flight mechanic in the military, Jerauld went on to a successful career in electronics design. Yet he continued to fly whenever he had the chance, and finally—in 1963—was able to purchase his first plane: a Piper PA-18 Super Cub. Jerauld has been flying for over 50 years now, and for this amazing feat was recently g r a n t e d t h e Wr i g h t Brothers Master Pilot Award from the Federal Aviation Administration. Even after all this time, Jerauld—a selfproclaimed “romantic flyer”—hasn’t lost his love of looking down on the world from the clouds. “Planes are like little magic carpets that take you to wonderful places,” he shares.

et ready to step back in time! Gold Bug Mine is a real gold mine from the Gold Rush days—a place where visitors will find riches in the gem-panning trough and can visit a historic stamp mill and working blacksmith shop. Those in the market for a special, one-of-a-kind memento from their mining experience can swing by Hattie’s Gift Shop.

Educational and entertaining guided tours are available for both schools and private groups. Although the mine is the main feature of the tour, it also includes visits to the stamp mill and blacksmith shop.

Those on a group outing can enjoy a picnic or party along the stream at one of several picnic areas. After, take everyone on a selfguided audio tour of Gold Bug Mine and be sure to try your luck at gem panning! Note: Large groups are encouraged to rent the pavilion.

Gold Bug Park and Mine can be enjoyed seven days a week, April through October, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge for entrance into the park or for day use of picnic areas and trails, and parking is free.

ood trucks, once reserved for cities and festivals, are now zooming countywide with their mouthwatering, mobile menus.

Diamond Springs-based All Star Que has gained even more mileage working with Food Trucks in the Foothills, an organization that’s raised over $20,000 for local charities and nonprofits. Michael Van Ry began the truck alongside his family three years ago and— although he no longer enters cook-off competitions—his winning BBQ is still a crowd-pleaser. Whether you track the truck from their Facebook page or hire them for an event, the sweet and spicy scent of smoky BBQ will beckon before you even spy the little trailer-turned-castle. Jumping in line, my date and I flip-flopped between trying their beef or pork options, before settling on both. The BBQ Brisket Sandwich came with a sprinkling of blue cheese crumbles atop a generous heaping of tender beef, perfectly sauced and piled into a fluffy sweet roll. Next came the Pulled Pork Three Ways: on a taco, nachos and tucked inside a sammie. The zesty pork paired well with the traditional corn tortilla and cheese in the taco, becoming perfect with the topping of tart slaw, as it did atop the hoagie sandwich as well, while the nachos were cheesymeaty heaven. Q: Since the beginning of my pregnancy my vision has become slightly blurry. Is this something I should worry about?

A:

Though visual disturbances are rare during pregnancy, the most common underlying condition is known as “gestational diabetes” where the blood sugar level of the pregnant mother rises. Blood sugar levels should be monitored closely during pregnancy. The good news is that most visual disturbances are temporary, and vision returns to normal shortly after birth.

L

ast-chance swim lessons start August 8; sessions last one week and are in the afternoon. Water aerobics classes are at 9 a.m. weekday mornings and evening water aerobics take place Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.

Mini-Hawk Sports Camp—a multi-sport (baseball, basketball and soccer) program developed to give children (ages 4-6) a positive first step into athletics—will be held August 1-5 at Christa McAuliffe Park from 9 a.m. to noon. All participants receive a T-shirt, sports ball and merit award.

Kidz Camp has one more full-day session this month with a theme of Olympics.

Attendees (ages 6-12) will enjoy a field trip to Skatetown and activities like gymnastics, swimming, arts and crafts, time at Cameron Park Lake and more.

Beginning August 8, a half-day camp from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. will also be available.

Tennis lessons continue at Cameron Park Lake. Grown-ups can join in on the action too with an adult basketball league, drop-in sports at the gym, tai chi, ballroom dance, CPR, hunter safety, hula dance, yoga, knitting and more.

This month’s Speaker Series—August 10 at 10 a.m.—features Gail Lohman from Visiting Angels discussing living independently and how to find support for you or your loved ones. On August 23, from 10 a.m. to noon, don’t miss Game Day, followed by a short story discussion group at 1 p.m.

The annual Pooch Plunge takes place August 13 at Cameron Park Lake, featuring a walk with your furry friend in the morning (9:30 a.m.), followed by the plunge at 10 a.m.; food, vendors and raffle prizes will also be on hand.

Save the date! On September 10, Cameron Park Country Fest is coming to Christa McAuliffe Park. This free event—sponsored by the Cameron Park CSD and the Cameron Park Community Foundation—celebrates the area’s Gold Country roots with a home-style, family-friendly festival.

All proceeds will support Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In commemoration of the Great Western Migration, the Pollock Pines/Camino Community Center partnered with the Highway 50 Association to bring this 67th annual event back to the Pollock Pines region after a 10-year absence. The near 1,000 attendees experienced a full day of entertainment consisting of wagon rides, gold panning and mountain men demonstrations, a poker tournament, crafters and vintage vendors, along with live music. HLB: How did you develop into a painter?

SR: I have been artistic from the day I could hold a pencil. Art is a part of me and comes naturally, so I didn’t really have to discover it, but more so awaken that part of me. I have my parents to thank for buying me supplies and always dealing with my little messy creations.

HLB: What are your favorite local spots to reap inspiration?

SR: I am highly intuitive to the places around me. My grandparents’ house and the home I grew up in bring back memories of my childhood. I am also inspired by nature; any natural, serene place I travel to will bring me peace. When I’ve found a place where the stars are not drowned out by

HLB: If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

SR: Art comes from within an individual, so if I didn’t have my paints, I would be a completely different person altogether. I love other art— such as sketching and making jewelry—but painting is by far the most emotional medium for me. Without it, I’d lose a special part of myself.

HLB: What words of wisdom do you keep close to your heart?

SR: When I was a little girl, my grandma once told me that there is art in everything—art in pain, art in the sky, and [art in] the way someone’s eyes light up when they talk about something they love. It is up to me to find that art—around and within me—and to bring it to the surface.

HLB: What are your future aspirations?

SR: I want to become an art therapist for special needs children. I find that communication is extremely important to an individual and when they are deprived of that, it tends to wreak havoc on the psyche. I plan on using art’s expressive qualities as a way of communication for these kids. They have a lot to say, and I’m here to listen.

It may have started out as a trend, but life coaching seems to have gained a lot of momentum recently. From Oprah Winfrey to Metallica, celebrities have been using this resource to tap into their best selves for years. But what is it really? By talking

to a few local experts in the field, I found that the concept is quite nuanced.

Why is it useful?

“Coaching addresses obstacles that have kept us stuck, as it empowers forward action toward making long-term behavior changes,” says Heather Penny, Ph.D., professional coach, and president and founder of Arise & Be in Roseville. Who does it benefit?

How does one know if they need a counselor or coach? “In an oversimplified nutshell, counseling is the process of looking backwards and resolving past issues; coaching is the process of looking forward and identifying what holds us

back in order to gain forward momentum in achieving life goals,” says Penny.

There are various types of life coaches who follow different processes and have their own set of tools. From financial and family coaches, to mental health and wellness coaches, there’s someone for everyone. Chris Wagner, esthetician and owner of Advanced Skin Solutions in Fair Oaks, as well as a new thought practitioner, focuses on the spiritual aspect of life coaching. “Spiritual practitioner is akin to life coaching…however, spiritual work goes deeper. This is a lifelong journey, a gradual and progressive movement toward spiritual maturity,” she says.

When should you hire one?

Life coaching seems to address a host of issues pertaining to…well, life. Achieving goals, pushing limits, finding your voice, making better decisions or starting a new career are all reasons to get a coach. Like Surritt says, “I have clients from age 11 to age 76; they’re people confused about the direction and choices they are facing, parents struggling with teenagers, executives looking for balance in their life, and retirees who still want to make an impact on the world.”

The “how” Sessions typically last an hour or less, and can be needed from four days up to two years, according to Surritt. In a nutshell, each session typically involves a conversation to check how the client is progressing toward their goal and what they need t o d o n ex t . Wa g n e r ’s approach is to give clients the tools and techniques to naturally attract what they’re seeking, often using affirmations and meditation, while Penny uses the co-active model of coaching, where coach a n d c l i e n t a re a c t i ve c o l l a b o ra t o r s f o c u s e d on the client’s agenda, while concentrating on the “three Cs”: clarity, confidence and courage. Success is measured by an increased sense of selfworth, accomplishments in specific areas of life and an overall increase in happiness.

“The goal is to have the client discover their unique combination of gifts and talents, unlock their passion to make their lives blossom and in some way contribute more to their families and communities,” says Surritt. For Wagner, success is measured by how peaceful clients become and how they respond to life’s situations.

What now?

“Find a coach who fits your goals, your personality and your style of relating.

Interview coaches until you find one that validates what you are looking for and how you want to move forward…only you can determine what you need and want,” says Penny. And once you do, you could come close to acing life. “When clients choose coaching, they get about 90 percent of what they are wanting, and it stays with them,” shares Surritt. “It’s all about making this world a more loving and kinder place,” says Wagner.

RETREAT TO BLISS I had the good fortune of attending one of Arise & Be’s day-long retreats this spring, titled: Explore Your Voice. In a quiet corner of Roseville, a group of women gathered for what would turn out to be a liberating experience for some and an enlightening one for others.

Me? I soaked up and enjoyed every second. From the bag of goodies and sumptuous lunch, to surprisingly deep conversations and hands-on crafts, the care and attention to detail that went into everything—including individual place settings and the day’s materials—had me hooked from beginning to end. I got to make my own “voice canvas,” while sitting under the shade of stoic trees. Using colorful hexagon-shaped tissue paper, we were taught to make a decoupage canvas and cover it with words that represented the best version of ourselves. My canvas called me “empathetic,” “gifted” and “self-aware.” We went through exercises that pondered spaces within us and among us, spiritual intelligence, strength and sensitivity, and finding and developing an inner voice.

Heather guided us through the day with her gentle demeanor and graceful way, leading us from one thought to another in a seamless process that felt like one long, soothing lullaby. Michaela, Sharon and Meredith, co-founders of Arise & Be, buddied up to the group in a heartbeat and were beacons of light through group discussions, lunch and in between. The strangers we’d been to each other at the beginning of the day were now supporters and confidants, knowing not only each other’s names, but heartaches and burning desires too. Every woman that day left with an unwavering voice, a peaceful glow about her—and a brownie, of course. The Community Observatory in Placerville is a place where you can see the stars up close and enjoy the universe in beautiful living color. The Observatory, a 100 percent volunteer-run facility, features two main telescopes: a 17-inch research-grade telescope and a 14-inch telescope with a high-resolution digital camera.

Placerville’s Shining Star

by Janet Scherr This month, the Observatory will celebrate 10 years of serving and educating the community. Built in 2006 with funds raised by the Rotary Club of Cameron Park, and in partnership with the El Dorado County Office of Education and Folsom Lake College, the Observatory site was chosen for its mild climate and dark skies that are excellent for stargazing.

“We have a wonderful staff of about 45 volunteer docents who help operate the Observatory and keep it free to the public,” says current Chief Docent Charlie Coburn. “The docents enjoy sharing their knowledge with visitors.”

Coburn has had a lifelong love for astronomy and was formerly on the Board of Directors for the Sacramento Valley Astronomical Society. “I was in charge of the youth programs and maintaining the observatory there,” he recalls. “That is where I met Forrest Lockhart, the very first Community Observatory docent who was instrumental in working with Rotary to build the Observatory into the wonderful facility it is today.”

In its 10 years, the Community Observatory has had 70,000 visitors and hosted many scouting groups, school field trips, service organizations, senior centers and church groups. Now, with increasing demand and advancing technology, the time has come to expand. The staff and sponsors are seeking to better

accommodate local students and offer them the power of state-of-the-art astronomy research capabilities.

Plans are underway to build a new Imaging Observatory dedicated to student projects.

While fund-raising has allowed the organization to obtain much of the equipment required for it, the group still needs to purchase the huge dome and its operating motors.

“In the past few years, imaging technology has taken fantastic leaps forward,” says Coburn. “It’s now possible for a small Observatory like ours to produce images rivaling those from the world’s largest observatories, [thus allowing] our local students to enjoy a truly hands-on experience in research astronomy.”

Docents and supporters have been busy organizing the Observatory’s 10-year anniversary event on August 13—an evening that will include presentations, guest speakers and a big birthday cake. All of the telescopes will be operating, along with solar telescopes set up until sunset. “The planets will be aligned nicely that night,” reveals Coburn. “We’ll be able to show you Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune. If you stay past midnight, you can finish your planetary tour with a view of Uranus. That’s all eight major planets viewable from our Observatory!” If that’s not enough, event planners are also hoping to see the annual Perseid meteor shower. “We will remain open all night until after the sun rises at 7 a.m.—or when everyone leaves, whichever is sooner. Bring a blanket if you want to lie out under the stars.”

erched on a hilltop in Gold Hill— overlooking Gold Trail School—is a simple headstone that marks the grave of Okei Ito, a Japanese woman who died over 140 years ago. The grave sits on property once owned by the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony, which was organized in 1869 by John Henry Schnell and made up of the first group of Japanese immigrants to ever come to America.

Schnell was a German arms dealer who arrived in Japan in 1860 and settled in Aizu Wakamatsu. During the Boshin War he sold weapons to rebelling Samurai warriors.

When the Samurai lost the war, Schnell was anxious to leave. He found a group of craftsmen and farmers, and their families, willing to immigrate to America to develop a tea and silk plantation in California.

The group arrived i n S a n Fra n cis co i n May 1869. They packed thousands of tea plants, m u l b e r r y tre e s , s i l k worms and other crops— which they had brought from Japan—onto wagons and headed for the foothills.

Schnell located an ideal property in Gold Hill owned by Charles Graner. In 1854, Graner and Francis Veerkamp had purchased adjoining ranches . G raner built a farmhouse, planted a vineyard, and produced wine and brandy. In 1869, he sold the 160-acre parcel to Schnell for $5,000 and moved to San Francisco.

The colony made a strong start, but in 1870, the area experienced a drought necessitating the purchase of water from a mining ditch to irrigate the crops. Iron sulfate present in the water killed the young plants. The colony was also running out of money, and the Japanese laborers were leaving in search of better-paying jobs.

In 1871, Schnell traveled back to Japan to raise funds for the struggling colony; he was never heard from again.

Two colonists remained—Okei Ito and Matsunosuke Sakurai—and were taken in by the neighboring Veerkamp family.

by Jerrie Beard Okei developed a fever later that year and died; she was buried on the hillside where she had spent evenings sitting and facing her beloved Japan. Matsunosuke, who continued to work for the Veerkamps for 30 years, saved his money and purchased a headstone for Okei. It reads, “In Memory of Okei, died 1871, aged 19 years (A Japanese girl).”

On the reverse side, the inscription is written in Japanese. Matsunosuke died in 1901 and is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Coloma.

It is believed that Okei was the first Japanese woman to be buried on American soil. In the 1920s , Japanese interest in the colony and gravesite began to grow, and the Japanese American Citizens League campaigned to have the site named a historical landmark. In 1969, Governor Ronald Reagan dedicated the historic landmark plaque that sits in a corner of the parking lot at Gold Trail School. The National Park Service placed the Wakamatsu Colony Farm site on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

The Veerkamps acquired the colony property in 1873 and retained ownership of it until 2010 when it was sold to the American River Conservancy (ARC). The farmhouse, which sits next to Cold Springs Road, is the original structure built by Charles Graner in the 1850s. The large tree next to the house is a Japanese elm planted by the colonists.

The ARC has put in countless hours restoring the house, property, outbuildings and gravesite. Each year, Japanese visitors make the pilgrimage to Gold Hill to view the grave, and a duplicate headstone has been erected in Aizu Wakamatsu, Japan.

The menu is short and sweet; and when there’s beer involved, that’s a good thing. wrecker and Desolation (bring a designated driver friend because they pack a wallop!), and that’s just the hit parade—there’s plenty of ales, IPAs and stouts to choose from, as well as cider, wine and yes, their famous meads, too. My husband went for the Dankalicious Session IPA, and I went with the Whit, an unfiltered wheat beer that’s perfect for a warm summer’s day.

The menu is short and sweet; and when there’s beer involved, that’s a good thing. The focus is on freshness, lots of local ingredients and plenty of salty fries for you to work up your thirst. Think salads, burgers, wings and fish and chips. My husband opted for The Works Burger and I ordered Fish and Chips. Both mains came with Parmesan garlic fries, and the servings were generous. My fish was crispy and golden brown, and the scratch-made tartar sauce packed just the right amount of zing. The Works Burger was more than a mouthful and worked in more ways than one.

By 1 p.m. on a Sunday almost every table was full. They’ve only been open for a couple of months now, and business is truly booming.

With a relaxed and friendly vibe, and killer food and brews to boot, Jack Russell is destined to become a foothill favorite in no time.

ans of local mainstay Jack Russell Brewing can rejoice—the brewery now has a second location, a brand new pub restaurant in Downtown Placerville, bringing some new life to the west end of Main Street.

The brewery has taken over the old Carrow’s location, and aside from the building itself, you probably won’t recognize the interior at all. Polished concrete floors, wooden tables, potted rosemary, big screen TVs and a friendly atmosphere…it’s a far cry from its predecessor.

First, let’s talk beers. All the favorites are on tap: Pale Ale, Slab Creek Pilsner, Apple Ale, plus brewer’s limited releases like Home-

taste VIETNAMESE SAISON PORK WITH NOODLES & SAISON NUOC CHAM Cooking with Beer by Mark Dredge (Dog ‘N’ Bone Books, an imprint of Ryland Peters, 2016, $19.95) • 3/4 to 1 lb. pork neck fillet • 2 lemongrass stalks, outer layer removed, very finely chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, very finely chopped • 1-inch piece of ginger, very finely chopped • 2 shallots (or 3 spring onions), very finely chopped • 4 tbsp. fish sauce • 2 tbsp. soy sauce • 4 tbsp. Saison Nuoc Cham (recipe follows) • 2 tbsp. sugar • 1 tbsp. honey • Black pepper

For Serving: • Cooked rice noodles • Finely diced carrots • Fresh cilantro • Thai basil or mint leaves • Crushed peanuts Take the pork and dice into small pieces and place in a large bowl. Chop the lemongrass, garlic, ginger and shallots as fine as possible. In a mixing bowl, combine the fish sauce, soy sauce, saison, sugar, honey and black pepper, stirring to mix it all together. Then add the chopped ingredients. Pour over the pork, making sure it’s all covered, and leave in the fridge for at least two hours (or up to eight hours).

To cook, either grill it on a barbecue so that it takes a caramelized char, or put in a hot oven (425 degrees) for 30 minutes.

For the saison nuoc cham, simply combine all ingredients.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

It definitely found me. Hair has been my passion for as long as I can remember. As a little girl, I would run around my great grandma’s in-home salon with rollers and perm rods in my hair!

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

I was able to be part of an amazing group that gave back to people who were less fortunate by giving free washes and cuts. As for my clients, I try my best to build a great relationship and understand their needs to make sure they have the absolute best time in my chair.

In my eyes, women—and even men—come to the salon to have a relaxing break from their crazy lives, so it should not be a stressful time; the more I can make that happen, the happier I am.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?

Getting to where I am in life today. I had a lot of people doubt me growing up, so being able to prove them wrong and know that I have been successful is a huge accomplishment to me.

What’s your biggest job perk?

I am, or can be, the reason someone feels better about herself. Knowing they are getting out of my chair feeling refreshed and looking their best is the absolute best part about what I do!

And finally, customer service is…?

Everything. It’s making sure that while clients are in the salon and in my chair, they feel comfortable, happy and relaxed; and it’s making sure I go above and beyond to fulfill their needs and expectations. If you don’t have good customer service, I feel you don’t have a business. It will make or break you.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?

Confronting challenges I thought would defeat me, but instead embracing them as my teacher; also, reclaiming dreams I thought I had abandoned by realizing the power of choice in my life.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

When relationships with self, family and others become strengthened or healed, this, in turn, offers greater opportunities for healthier communities to emerge, grow and thrive. It is my sense that the communities we build and nurture are essentially a reflection of our own selves.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

I love being in nature—it’s a renewal process for me. I especially love kayaking, bicycling or simply sitting quietly by a lake, enchanted by a sunset, a sunrise or enjoying the colors of an autumn day.

What’s your favorite local event that you go to?

I’m a big fan of the Antique Street Faire held on Main Street and really enjoy the Third Saturday ArtWalk as well. I am also an artist, and I love the collective energy of creativity.

What’s your favorite local business other than your own?

I enjoy the simplicity and quiet comfort of Cuppa Coffee and More. They serve excellent coffee and my all-time favorite: peanut butter cookies! They offer great side dishes as well.

what the duck?

The Maileys Get a Mallard

She’s a domestic mallard—larger than her wild brethern, bred not to fly. Her name is Regina. It was going to be Reggie until her feathers all came in brown. My wife calls her “Regilicous.” I pretty much just call her “duck.”

I’d never wanted a duck. It was our son’s idea. Sam is 17—the last kid at home.

He loves animals; we’ve got two dogs, a cat and a large gray fuzzball of a rabbit named Harrison that roams our yard.

But a duck? I’m not sure why Sam set his mind on one, other than he can be a an odd duck himself sometimes.

So, we got a duck. But not before learning about them. Having a duck is not something you just go do, unless you’re Old MacDonald and you have a farm. We have a backyard. But it’s sizable, and we found we could meet city regulations for keeping domesticated fowl. We read up about ducks. We asked around and got a lot of helpful advice, which mostly pertained to poop. Apparently, without going into detail, birds have no control over that, and can’t be potty-trained.

With a duck, they all noted, it would be wherever, whenever. They were right.

Then we found out about duck diapers.

Yes, those are a thing.

But don’t worry; we were as appalled as you to learn they exist. If going pantsless was good enough for Daffy or Donald, it was going to be good enough for our duck. And the fact is, unless the duck is in the house (which is never since the day she did that on our couch), it isn’t a problem.

just makes you smile. She follows us like a curious web-footed toddler, and has developed a kinship with our dogs and even our cat, whom we’ve caught grooming her (Sam suggests he may actually be tasting her, but we choose not to believe that). Being a duck, Regina does occasionally cut loose with a brief series of startlingly loud quacks that sound not unlike the ragged smoker’s cackle of my late Aunt Gladys. But since our neighbors haven’t broken out any shotguns yet, I’m assuming it’s too brief and infrequent to be annoying. When she is content, which is often, she sings to herself with gentle little squeaks and chirps.

She isn’t just ornamental, either: She’s been great for our plants because she’s developed a sweet tooth for snails and slugs. Plus, that duck poop? We filter it from the small pond we dug for her (yes, we dug her a pond) and it is the Best.

Fertilizer. Ever. Seriously. This year’s zuchinni plants look like something out of Jurassic Park.

I never thought I’d get a duck, and I cer tainly never thought I would like owning a duck. But I did, and I do. And maybe this is why: Two of our kids are already out of the house. Sam, even though Regina was his idea, will be off to college next year at this time. Maybe the duck, along with the rest of our menagerie, are there to fill the void that’s being left behind by life’s relentless forward progress.

If so, I kind of like the idea of combating empty-nester syndrome with an actual bird.

So, yeah. We got a duck.
