id you know that national pet month falls in May every year? While we might have missed the mark just a tad, this month we’re making up for it with an OMGso-cute homage to our local pets… and their people. If you don’t crack a smile, or manage to utter a giggle or two after flipping the pages of Style’s annual People & Their Pets pictorial with bonus quotes from pet owners (new addition this year!)—you should immediately try locating your sense of humor.

Our family simply would not be complete without them, and they teach the value of unconditional love on a daily basis. I can never stay mad at either of them for more than a minute…even when they drag my favorite sandals onto the lawn for a cleaning. Oftentimes, the media inaccurately characterizes pit bulls—instead of their irresponsible owners—as violent. It is for this reason that I feel compelled to counter this with the fact that I have had the pleasure of owning pit bulls for most of my adult life, and they are all the same—deeply loving, fiercely loyal, and always eager to please their people. Mine seem to think they are lap kittens.

Now that I’m off my soapbox, the takeaway this month is probably something most of us can all agree upon: Our pets—furry, feathered, gilled and scaled—enrich our lives (and hearts) with joy, making the world a better place in which to live.

he Women’s Fund El Dorado Grant Gala, held in June, awarded nearly $60,000 to Western Slope nonprofits. A total of $42,500 in Focus Grants was awarded to two organizations aimed at “breaking the cycle of poverty”: Boys and Girls Club of El Dorado County Western Slope and Tahoe Turning Point of Placerville.

“It would have made his passing much more comfortable. We should all be able to do that.”

The Hills can also frequently be seen lending at hand at the Upper Room Dining Hall, a nonprofit that provides free meals to those in need. For these and other efforts, the couple received the 2015 Seniors of the Year Award from the El Dorado County Commission on Aging. The Hills, however, remain humble about their accomplishments and want to encourage other retired people to get involved in outreach activities. “Once you retire, there are so many things you can do,” Lee urges.

hen Lee and Brenda Hill reached their golden years, they decided there had to be a better way to while away their days than playing golf. “After catching up on all the household chores that I’d been telling my wife for years I would do, I looked through the paper and decided to volunteer,” Lee says. An Army veteran and retired civil engineer, he soon got involved with Snowline Hospice, first in bereavement counseling and later doing in-home care.

“It’s a joy to be able to help the patients and their families,” Lee says. “I get more out of it than I give to it.” Like her husband, Brenda is also passionate about giving back. For over three decades, she’s been a volunteer at Marshall Medical Center. In addition, she helps out at Snowline in an

Golden Days at Gold Bug Mine

hen gold was discovered on January 24, 1848, just eight miles from where Gold Bug Mine sits today, a new way of life was created in our corner of this great nation. By 1860, hard rock mining began to take form. In 1888, William Craddock filed the Vulture Claim, which eventually had three mines, one of which he called the “Hattie,” named for his eldest daughter. By 1930, William Meagher, who was the last of several claimants, filed a claim on the entire 62 acres and four claims that compromised Gold Bug Park. He also built a home at the end of Gold Bug Lane as a summer destination for his family.

In the early 1960s, the Bureau of Land Management reclaimed the mine and surrounding land and in 1965 leased it to the City of Placerville as a recreational area. In 1980, Hangtown’s Gold Bug Park Development Committee was formed to protect and defend the property for public use. The City of Placerville is now the only municipality to own a mine in California.

Gold Bug Park and Mine—located at 2635 Gold Bug Lane in Placerville—can be enjoyed seven days a week, April through October, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Step back into the 1800s with an audio tour that guides you into the 352-foot drift. Don’t forget to bring your picnic lunch and enjoy the park’s picturesque trails, too. Consigned jewelry is previously owned by individuals, estates or retired jewelers; it can also include items from wholesalers or designers’ overstock. The process begins when the jewelry item/s are brought to a jeweler. The gemologist evaluates each item to provide the best selling opportunity; priced right, the buyer gets a bargain and the seller gets cash for excess jewelry. The jewelry is then displayed in the store, which eliminates the inconvenience of individually selling the item, saving the cost of advertising and security risks.

What are some fashion tips for females as they age?

A:

It’s no secret that by age 40 your shape starts to change—even with no weight gain. Your “assets” may not be the head-turners they were in your 20s, but that doesn’t mean you should hide these wonderful features now. If you have great legs, don’t be afraid to wear shorter bottoms—just stay covered up on top. If your cleavage is impressive, show it off subtly with a lower top and add jewelry, making sure to be modest with your bottoms. Remember that less is more when wearing edgier styles—pairing a few edgy pieces with simple pieces goes a long way.

the10 spot LOCAL PET RESCUES The life expectancy for a shelter animal is 72 hours, and the number of dogs put down in shelters each day is 5,500. Those numbers are according to An Act of Dog, a nonprofit started by Mark Barone, an artist who hand painted 5,500 photos of dogs to help put the number into perspective. Proceeds from the prints (anactofdog.org) help fund the life-saving work of various rescue groups and no-kill animal shelters.

You still have time to make a splash this summer! Water aerobics takes place at 9 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays (evening sessions are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.), and Aqua Zumba is Wednesdays at 9 a.m. and Fridays at 5 p.m.

Cameron Park Lake is open for swimming (until August 9), exercise, picnics, boat rentals, pickleball and tennis.

Kidz Camp (ages 6-12) has one session left—Making Waves— from August 3-7, featuring a field trip to the Sacramento State Aquatic Center. Other activities include gymnastics, swimming, arts and crafts and more. Golf lessons are still being offered (ages 6 to adults) at Bass Lake Golf Course, and tennis lessons take place at Cameron Park Lake.

Adults—don’t feel left out! Join in on the action with an adult basketball league, drop-in sports at the gym, tai chi, ballroom dance, classical guitar, CPR, hunter safety, Zumba, hula dance or yoga classes.

On August 11, bingo games take place from 1-3 p.m. at the Cameron Park CSD ($3 for two cards, and $1 for each additional card; no more than four cards total) and from 3-5 p.m., don’t miss “Nutrition Essentials.” On August 25, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Cameron Park Newcomers will host a game day, with—you guessed it—lots of games!

EDDOG will host its annual Pooch Plunge at Cameron Park Lake on August 15, featuring a walk with your furry friend at 9:30 a.m., followed by the plunge at 10 a.m.

On August 15 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., don’t miss the Cameron Park Country Fest at Christa McAuliffe Park. This new, free event, sponsored by the Cameron Park Community Foundation, will be a down-home, family-friendly festival. Enjoy live music, show off your grilling skills in a backyard barbecue competition (or sample the results and be the judge), take part in old-fashioned games or one of the “just for fun” pageants, and send the little ones to the kids’ zone while you shop for arts, crafts and treasures at the Market Vendors. or thousands of years, tea has been used for its medicinal purposes, making it a smart option for daily drinking. “All tea has benefits,” explains Laura Owens, owner and CEO of Owens Acres, LLC, in Placerville, and certified master herbalist and certified holistic nutritionist. “All teas are high in antioxidants, phenols, minerals and vitamins. It’s also anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-mutagenic—meaning it reduces the rate that cells mutate.”

“All true tea is derived from the same plant, the Camellia sinensis,” says Tamalisa Carlson, MPH, RD, a clinical dietitian at Marshall Medical Center in Shingle Springs. “White, green, oolong and black tea are differentiated during processing,” she explains. “The leaves are either taken straight from the plant, as in green tea, or they’re left out in the sun to ferment until they turn black.”

While there’s no firm evidence—yet—that drinking tea will prevent cancer in humans, drinking up to two cups per day should be part of your healthful lifestyle. “It contributes to your daily fluid needs, has no calories, promotes heart health, reduces inflammation, protects your skin FOR STYLE’S from sun damage and may even prevent cancer,” Carlson says.

Teas or herbal teas (which are not true teas, but rather an infusion of fruits, herbs, flowers, roots, spices or other plants) are a great way to begin your day. “They provide much needed hydration and nutrients from your eight-hour sleep period and really help jump-start your body for the day,” Owens says. “Non-caffeinated teas are relaxing and soothing and are best at night to help you wind down and drift off to sleep naturally.”

Naoko Tsunoda, Teavana’s tea authority and director of tea development, drinks a cup of matcha green tea as soon as she gets to work every day. “Matcha has so many [health] benefits and keeps me focused after drinking it. Both green and white teas are the least-processed type of tea, and they’re the richest sources of antioxidants.

“White teas have an unmatched subtlety, complexity, natural sweetness and delicacy,” Tsunoda says. “Black teas are full-bodied and strong—they taste great alone or with milk and sugar, and they make great iced tea. Oolong teas are full-bodied with a flavorful fragrance and sweet aroma. Most people commonly recognize oolong as the tea served in Chinese restaurants.”

Herbal teas can be a substitute to caffeinated teas and “used as a medicinal alternative for common issues such as headaches and migraines, an upset stomach, colic, weight loss, insomnia, PMS, menopause issues, blood pressure, acne, gout, cold and flu, allergies, cancers/tumors, and a long list of other common complaints,” Owens says. “For health and wellness, it’s best to have a few varieties on hand for both children and adults.”

El Dorado County’s Water Wars

Water, or the lack thereof, has impacted the development of the Sierra Nevada since the days of the Gold Rush.

Success in the gold fields was dependent upon water to wash the gold f rom the surro un ding dir t . N e a r th e larger rivers , such as the American, water was abundant, but as mining operations moved into the foothills, ravines and gulches, miners relied on the winter rains to supply the water they needed. The rains, however, were unpredictable—some years were very wet, some were very dry. The winter of 1850 was a dry year, and miners found it increasingly difficult to make a living with limited water. Needless to say, a more reliable source of water was in high demand.

In 1850, enterprising individuals looked to the year-round flow of the American and Cosumnes Rivers as well as Weber Creek to fill this need. By 26 styleedc.com - August 2015

constructing ditches and flumes—some carrying water six, eight, 10 miles and more—they could supply water to

outlying mining operations, vineyards and farms. Perhaps the first ditch in the county was the Union Flume, a three-

mile trench that conveyed water from the South Fork of the American River near Coloma to the Lotus area.

Remnants of these ditches can be found throughout the county, and many are still used by local farmers and water purveyors, including the Georgetown Divide and El Dorado Irrigation District (EID).

During the Gold Rush, those who constructed a ditch or flume owned the ditch and the water running through it; they then sold the water to the miners, who oftentimes were required to return the water to the ditch so it could be resold downstream.

Water was measured and sold by the miner’s inch, which is “the quantity of water that will escape from a hole one inch square through a two-inch thick plank, with a steady flow of water standing six inches above the top of the hole, in a 24-hour period.” This amounts to approximately 10 gallons of water per minute.

Disputes over water right s were common and often led to bloodshed. In 1860, Dr. White of Indian Diggings dammed a portion of Cedar Creek for his own purposes. Miners below the dam were enraged and commenced breaking up the dam. White, defending his property, shot and killed two of the three miners, and spent the next year hiding from the law before returning to the East Coast.

In 1856, John Kirk, an engineering consultant from Pennsylvania, claimed the rights to the water of the South Fork of the American River as well as storage claims on Silver, Willow, Twin, Audrain, Echo, Medley and Glacier Lakes. In 1873, he and a partner created the El Dorado Water and Deep Gravel Mining Company. The water storage and conveyance system engineered by that c o m p a ny i s n o w p a r t o f E I D ’s P ro j e c t 1 8 4 , w h i c h includes Lake Aloha, Echo, Silver and Caples Lakes, 22.3 miles of flumes and canals, Forebay Reservoir, and a powerhouse.

Creating a Whole House Color Palette

t seems simple, but picking a paint color is one of the biggest obstacles my clients have. When they realize they’re really picking an overall palette, they’re positively paralyzed. I’ve been part of the process in thousands of homes, and I have to remind clients that it really is simpler than we think. Answer a few questions, make some quick decisions, and then narrow those decisions down to an ultimate choice.

Flipping through magazines and websites can be a big help when you’re looking for inspiration, but first, take a minute to answer two important questions: What are your favorite colors, and how do you want to feel in your home? Are you looking for a serene oasis or a fun, funky vibe? Finding yourself on that spectrum and considering the colors most likely to take you there is where you want to start. We react to color on such a gut level that instinct will serve you well. If you’re really having a tough time, head to the closet and note the colors of your favorite clothes. Check out the bedding and art on the walls. You’ll be surprised how quickly you see a pattern that resonates. Choose three colors to get started.

WHICH ROOMS CAN YOU SEE FROM WHICH ROOMS? Even if you’re not working with an open floor plan, you want to consider everything in your line of sight as you choose colors for particular rooms. This won’t necessarily result in removing any of the colors from the list, but you may end up choosing a different tint or shade that you like for another room in your sight line.

This is crucial. Pick up an eight-ounce sample of those colors and brush some on every wall intended for. Depending on the light, one color will often look like two when painted on different walls. Live with them for at least three days—viewing them morning, noon and night—again noting the difference in shades under different light sources, and start narrowing.

If you’re still having trouble deciding, vow to eliminate one color a day. Remember, you can always change paint, and you’ve chosen colors you actually like. At this point, it’s a safe bet that you’re going to love whatever you choose!

eady to hit the road with your pet? Before you go, you have a lot to consider.

“Anxiety is the biggest hurdle,” says Dr. Brad Cahoon, DVM, CVA, and owner of Veterinary Healing Center of El Dorado Hills and Folsom, who suggests exposing the pet to things she’ll experience while traveling, such as being in a crate or being around new people and environments. “Many animals just don’t like traveling in planes, trains and automobiles,” says Bob Campbell, owner of sBarkles, a do-it-yourself dog wash store with holistic, healthy dog and cat food in Folsom, who recommends a product called Rescue Remedy for Pets as a “natural stress relief.”

The most important thing to remember when traveling with pets—whether camping, going to the beach or to the city—is planning ahead with your itinerary in mind. “Stopping for dinner? Where will Fido stay while you eat?” asks Jason Davis, The Dog Guy® of Folsom Dog Resort and Training Center.

“One of the biggest challenges is being able to do the things you want to do with your pets [there],” says Karen Petree of Happy Feet Pet Sitting, noting that while many hotels and restaurants are becoming pet friendly, not all venues are suitable for them. “While on a recent trip to Florida, I noticed some boardwalks and beaches weren’t pet friendly,” she says. “Who will watch your dog while you do go somewhere that isn’t pet friendly?”

Other pet owners can be great resources when it comes to getting advice and travel recommendations. “When traveling with dogs, people really need to research where they’re going,” says Erin Selover, owner of Wagger’s Pet Spa in Folsom, who recommends checking websites like bringfido.com to find petfriendly stops on your trip. Selover, who often travels with her golden retriever Jolie, also reminds pet owners to know their dog’s behavior.

“If the dog is not socialized with other pets, that can be a problem,” she says.

DON’T LEAVE PETS INSIDE THE CAR UNATTENDED When you exit the vehicle, so does your pet. “Be aware that you can’t leave a dog in the car when it’s over 70 degrees,” says Selover. “Heat can kill.” Remember to take frequent potty breaks, too. “Keep your pet hydrated before and during travel,” Dr. Cahoon urges.

BE SAFE

Keep your pet safe while you travel. “There are terrific harness systems available for dogs at both ezydog.com and kurgo. com,” says Campbell.

“These companies are really, really good at designing products like harnesses and barriers that work in almost all automobiles.” The Humane Society of the United States urges drivers to use restraints so pets don’t roam in the car, and don’t let your pet sit in the front seat, where they could be injured if the air bag deploys.

Allowing your pet to ride in an open truck bed is also a no-no.

FEND OFF PESTS “Make sure your dog is current on flea and tick medicine when traveling,” says Selover, who recommends keeping your dog out of brushy areas (where pests are abundant) and inspecting the pet’s coat thoroughly for fleas and ticks.

Opt for direct flights if you can, which can minimize the travel time for you and your pet. What’s more, direct flights minimize the likelihood of delays since you’re not waiting for connecting flights.

aste is Amador County’s best non-secret secret. I say non-secret because Taste was named one of America’s Top 100 Wine Restaurants by Wine Enthusiast Magazine— the word is definitely out!

My husband and I visited for lunch on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, and the dining room was bustling. We started with the popular and aptly named Mid-Day Mushroom Cigars, which featured an earthy medley of crimini, shitake and oyster mushrooms with goat cheese and herbs—all tightly rolled in a light, crispy phyllo casing with porcini mushroom sauce. It tasted even better than it sounds…believe me.

For mains, I ordered the Local Rock Cod, and my husband opted for the Grilled Niman Ranch Pork Loin. The tender, flavorful fish was served on a rich and vibrant bouillabaisse sauce with tiny nuggets of Spanish chorizo (yum!), white bean purée, saffron-braised fennel and two oversized grilled sourdough “croutons” topped with a black garlic aioli. It was like consuming a flavorful symphony, note by tasty note. My husband’s pork loin—served alongside a bed of farro with thinly sliced discs of summer squash and the most mouthwatering stuffed squash blossoms I’ve ever tasted—was equally toothsome.

After two eyebrow-raising courses, how could we deny ourselves a sweet treat? We both couldn’t resist trying the trio of creme brulee—vanilla bean, butterscotch and Mexican chocolate.

All of them were divine.

Taste is a true treasure for the taste buds. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want to enjoy carefully selected and artfully prepared fine dining alongside friendly and attentive service, it will be a meal to remember. Word to the wise: If you’re a wine enthusiast, definitely take advantage of their pairings—overhearing the staff talk so knowledgeably to other diners about the local offerings made me jealous that I wasn’t partaking myself.

Bring a medium saucepan of water to boil over high heat. Gently slide the eggs into the pot and bring back to a boil. Boil for 8 minutes. While the eggs are cooking, set up an ice bath. After 8 minutes, remove the eggs from the water, place in the ice bath, and let cool for 10 minutes. Remove the eggs from the ice bath, peel them and set aside until ready to use.

In a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, sweet peppers, and onion. Add the onion powder, dry mustard, sugar, celery seeds, and vinegar; season with kosher salt and pepper; and toss well. Let stand for at least 15 minutes, or for up to 1 hour, before serving.

To serve, quarter the eggs and season them with salt. Spread a thick layer of cottage cheese onto a serving platter and arrange the vegetables and eggs on top. Squeeze the lemon halves over everything, garnish with the dill, and season with finishing salt and pepper. Leftover salad can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Serves 6 to 8.

w a n te d to n a m e h i m Speedo, because he is small and inappropriate. The kids wanted to call him Cornelius. As fans of the democratic process, we compromised, and so his tags read “Speedo Cornelius.”

But really we just call him Corny, a black chihuahua tinier than a loaf of bread. He’s a dog we never intended to have, but now we can’t imagine life without him. Isn’t that the way with dogs?

There was a bit of a void af ter our Labrador died .

Diamond was a big, beautiful girl, full of affection and loyalty and although we missed her, we thought we were fine being down to one dog, a sweet dachshund mix named Bella.

With two boys in high school and all that craziness, one dog, we assumed, would be enough.

So I’m not sure why we stopped by the Placer SPCA in Auburn one Saturday after a hike in the canyon. Nothing else to do, I suppose. I remember saying, “Let’s just see what they have.”

Well, what they had was Corny. In fact, he was the only dog there that day, out of a cage and being kept in a large back room. They told us he was older, about 10. For whatever reason, his previous ow n e r s h a d d ro p p e d him off weeks before.

When we entered, he didn’t do any of the things a stereotypical chihuahua does: bark, growl, pee all over.

Instead, he bolted FOR MORE TOM’S TAKES AND... across the floor with WHAT’S COMING an energy that belied NEXT MONTH? his years and leaped like a DON’T MISS STYLE’S puppy straight into the arms “WINE: 50+ THINGS of our 15-year-old, licking YOU SHOULD KNOW,” him like an old friend or, PLUS MUCH MORE, more accurately, like he was VISIT STYLEEDC.COM covered in bacon grease.

That was it. The little twerp has been with us ever since.

high alert, all chest and chin, ears perked like two sails full of wind. The second look is far more fitting for his size: wide-eyed, ears pinned back, a little scrunched down—like he’s about to be crushed by a plunging meteor only he can see. Then again, when much of your navigational life is spent dodging feet and tires, you’d be a little jumpy too.

Thankfully, unlike many small dogs, he’s rarely yappy— with one exception. Any dog below the knees? Corny’s chill with. He’s happy to touch noses, sniff butts, do all the stuff dogs do to say hello. But any dog bigger than that? He loses his mind, calling them out with a non-stop bark barrage that I’m sure is 70-percent dog expletives—but, only as long as he’s on his leash. He’s like the guy who’s only brave enough to talk tough as long as his friends are holding him back.

Usually the big dogs just give him a disinterested glance, but if they do woof back, Corny instantly goes from belligerent soccer hooligan to imminent meteor victim. His dignity is a fluid thing.

And not to sound, er, corny, but there is another aspect to his personality: love.

Empty laps are intolerable. Bellies were made for scratching. And he can’t just sleep next to you—he has to sleep against you. Any attempt to change that, and he’ll give you a third look involving large, saucer eyes and a sad, worried expression that seems to question your very commitment to the relationship. So, even if your arm is falling asleep, the dynamic is rarely changed.

I will never know why his previous owners gave him up. Nor will I ever know why exactly we stopped by the shelter that day. All I know is we’re happy about both.

And isn’t it that way with dogs?
