he Food Bank of El Dorado County recently held a Donor/ Community Appreciation Night and Grand Opening for their new warehouse and distribution facility in Cameron Park. Three awards were presented throughout the evening: “Partner Charity of the Year” went to Cool Community Church, Community Partner of the Year was given to El Dorado County Sheriff’s Jail, and John Blank was recognized as the “2014 Volunteer of the Year”...The Monteverde General Store Museum recently got a makeover with the help of Amador County painting company ARJ and local sign painter Erik Peterson of E. Center for Violence-Free Relationships, which provides counseling and assistance to those who have experienced sexual assault or domestic violence, and promotes healthy relationships through inschool education programs.

Huckabay is also a member and past president of the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and serves on the board of directors of the Guiding Hands Farm Program, an organization that gives kids hands-on experience in organic and sustainable farming. For Huckabay, it’s all about using his skills to better his community.

ameron Park resident Matt Huckabay always knew he wanted to go into the human services field, but it wasn’t until he took a job at the UC Davis Hospice Program that he made his dream a reality.

Although he was a young man in his 20s at the time, Huckabay’s work in end-oflife care forced him to grow up fast. “It was a pivotal moment,” he shares. “I learned to prioritize—to focus on what’s really important in life.”

Huckabay went on to lead a successful career in retail, all while volunteering for numerous community groups and nonprofits. A little over six years ago, he closed his retail store—having decided that 17 years in the business was long enough—and dedicated his newfound time to community service. ummer is in full swing, which means the Placerville Aquatics Center is open with a plethora of classes for all ages.

Swim lessons are available for kids ages one and up; if your child loves the water or wants to be a lifeguard, the Junior Lifeguard Camp (ages 10 and up; participants should be able to swim freestyle continuously for 25 yards, tread water for one minute, and swim 10 feet underwater)—which teaches introductory lifeguarding skills, rescue procedures and team-building—is designed specifically for them. The first camp starts this month and will fill quickly, so sign up soon.

Kids also have an opportunity to improve their swimming skills at one of the competitive swim clinics. The beginner clinics are ideal for swimmers ages eight and up with little or no competitive swimming experience, or those who have completed the Sharks Level of swimming lessons. The advanced clinic is ideal for kids who want a great workout without joining a swim team; experienced coaches provide a mixture of high-energy sets, stroke-refining drills and individualized technique instruction.

If you’re looking for an incredible workout, consider an invigorating aqua aerobics class, which includes shallow and deep-water exercises and increases aerobic conditioning, strength, flexibility and balance while being easy on the joints.

Those looking for something a little more solitary should come out for lap swimming, a program sponsored by the Marshall Foundation for Community Health. Pay a drop-in fee or purchase a multi-visit pass; seniors (ages 55 and older) are encouraged to attend and receive a discount.

osquito General Market & Kitchen might be nestled far away in the beautiful foothills of Placerville, but it’s definitely worth the drive. I was immediately greeted by beautiful Finnon Lake—then by the friendly owners. I chose their Pulled Pork Sandwich (described as “not your typical BBQ pulled pork”) with a 10 styleedc.com - June 2015

side of French fries. They were right about the sandwich—their recipe doesn’t call for barbecue sauce and it’s perfect just the way it is. The meat was tender with hints of sweet brown sugar and smokiness, and the fries were fresh and crispy. I was also lucky enough to indulge in dessert: Strawberry Bottom Cheesecake Pie. The confections change daily, but all are homemade and sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. The market also carries groceries for those camping on the Finnon Lake Recreation Area—a beautiful local campground that offers fishing and disc golf. Whether you’re heading up to the lake for a day or weekend getaway, be sure to swing by Mosquito General for a fresh and memorable homemade meal.

When is oral sedation recommended and what does it involve?

A:

Sedation is a great option for individuals who experience anxiety at the dental office. Sedation options range from nitrous oxide to full general anesthesia. Oral sedation involves taking a pill (Valium and Halcion are the most commonly used) 30 minutes to one hour before your dental appointment; this helps the patient stay relaxed during dental procedures and, in some cases, can help patients who have a sensitive gag reflex. It is required, however, that the patient has a ride to and from the dental office. Ask your dentist if this is a good option for you!

on’t miss the 16th Annual Summer Spectacular on Saturday, June 27, at Cameron Park Lake. The daylong event (gates open at 2 p.m.) features swimming at the lagoon, a kids’ carnival, refreshments, food and craft vendors, exhibitors, music and fireworks; public parking is available at the Cameron Park Airpark. Purchase your wristbands in advance at Walgreens and Bel Air in Cameron Park, Cameron Park/Shingle Springs Chamber of Commerce, El Dorado Food County Bank and at the Cameron Park District Office.

Let your kiddos (ages 6-11) have some fun this summer by signing them up for the weeklong Summer Day Camps. Each week has a different theme with special activities, time at Cameron Park Lake, gymnastics, a weekly field trip (Folsom Lake Bowl, Sky High Sports, State Capitol, etc.) and more. Sports camps include a Challenger Soccer Camp at Christa McAuliffe Park the week of June 8-12 and July 13-17; UK Soccer Camp the week of July 27-31; basketball camps the week of June 8-11, June 16-19 and June 22-26; and a volleyball camp the week of June 16-19. Science camps include Radical Robots Crazy Crime Lab, Grossology and Advanced Robots. Eureka! Theater, fine art, and horse camps are also available. Additional youth programs include ballet, gymnastics, sewing, hula, tennis lessons and golf classes.

Adults won’t want to miss the basketball league, cooking and art classes, Zumba, yoga, Jazzercise, and water aerobics. On June 10 from 9 a.m. to noon, master gardeners will discuss “Flowering Natives.”

ike many from his generation and those to follow, Jim Goodman’s first major musical influence was the Beatles. “To this day, I remember—over 50 years ago—watching The Ed Sullivan Show on our little black and white television in the living room,” says Goodman. “Seeing the Beatles was what really got me going with my music.”

Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Goodman—the leader and original member of The Cast Musical Band—moved to the center of the music scene in Nashville with his original rock group, Southern Steel. During his years with them he produced an undistributed 18 styleedc.com - June 2015

album of original songs, but seeking more stability left the group to join The Cast—a road band based out of New York City.

Goodman was fortunate to tour all across the U.S. with The Cast but time and time again, he found himself drawn toward the West Coast—perhaps because that’s where many of his favorite bands, including The Byrds, Eagles and Buffalo Springfield, originated from.

After nearly four years of touring, Goodman knew it was time to give up his quest of being a rock star and start pursuing a family instead. So in 1978, he chose to get off the bus for good and settled in Sacramento to plant roots. “Our last gig was in Fairfield. I re-

member thinking, ‘This is California?’” Goodman says. “After talking to some agents, I decided on Sacramento over Los Angeles or San Francisco. It’s big enough that there’s always something going on but small enough that you don’t get lost.”

With the help of original drummerproducer Tony Galioto, Goodman has kept several different versions of The Cast together over the years, ever since half of its members returned to the East Coast in 1982.

In its modern inception, the band consists of Goodman and Galioto, along with Sana Christian and Terry Allwein—who’ve performed with the band for the last 14 years.

They now have four albums featuring Goodman’s original songs available for purchase through their website, and can be seen (and heard) locally at Woodcreek Golf Club and next month’s Folsom Bikers Against Child Abuse event on July 11.

Goodman and his family now live in the beautiful countryside of Shingle Springs on 12 acres overlooking the Sierra Nevada. A change of scenery most likely influenced his music over the years, as The Cast has transitioned away from its rock ’n’ roll roots to a more country feel.

“Looking for more authenticity, I drifted toward modern country music from rock,” says Goodman. “Country, along with the tunes from the ’60s and ’70s, is very melodic and earthy. We kind of lost that when rock became glam and glittery and everyone needed gimmicks.”

With his touring days far behind him, there’s not a lot about actual road life Goodman misses. Although he remembers his time with The Cast fondly, hopping from city to city and from climate to climate, it often left the singer-songwriter sick from allergies, colds and loneliness.

“The struggle of it all is stressful and not very glamorous,” Goodman says. “Now I do it all simply for the love of doing it—not for making a living.”

J

une is National Migraine Awareness Month, bringing attention to a condition the World Health Organization lists as one of the 20 most disabling illnesses on earth— one that affects 36 million Americans.

What is a migraine? “[A] migraine is one of the most common types of headaches,” says Dr. Asad Chaudhary, MD, neurologist with Mercy Medical Group. “It occurs three times more commonly in females than men,” and lasts between 4-72 hours. It has at least two of the following symptoms: “Pain on one side of the head, throbbing sensation, moderate to severe intensity, nausea/vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound and pain [that] worsens with routine physical activity,” says Nancy J. Coombes, RN, BSN, neurology/ neurosurgery manager at Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento and Roseville Medical Centers. While they typically don’t occur every day, migraines tend to be recurrent over time.

“Migraines often have certain triggers that set them off, such as eating or drinking a specific item, weather or altitude change, lack of sleep, stress or exhaustion,” says Dr. Amer Khan, MD, pediatric neurologist and sleep specialist with Sutter Medical Group. “Hormonal changes, puberty, pregnancy and menopause are often implicated in women.” Other triggers can include exercise and caffeine overuse. Coombes cites processed meats, ripened cheeses, avocado, breads made with yeast and chocolate as possible food triggers; eliminating these foods one by one may help determine which, if any, are triggers.

Explaining the Aura Before migraines start, during the “prodrome” stage, many patients may experience moodiness, fatigue and changes in taste or smell. Some patients experience symptoms that are similar to strokes, such as difficulty speaking, weakness or numbness, an upset stomach or a feeling of a heavy head or confusion. Others see flashing lights and have tunnel vision.

“These symptoms are often considered to be ‘an aura’ of the migraine and can occur just before or after head pain appears, and only last a short time,” Dr. Khan says.

Treatment Headache expert Dr. Marc Lenaerts, MD, FAHS, and associate professor of clinical neurology at UC Davis, says there are four pillars of migraine treatment: proper lifestyle, abortive therapy,

rescue therapy, and prophylactic therapy. He says migraine sufferers need regular sleep, regular physical activity, avoidance of weight excess, stress management and avoidance of food triggers.

Abortive therapy refers to medications that can be taken up to two days per week to relieve symptoms. “Triptans are the mainstay of such treatment and specific for migraines and may reduce the pain, nausea and vomiting, and sensitivity to light and noise,” he says, explaining patients can also take “any medication that reduces inflammation or pain in a less specific way” such as Ibuprofen. “Combination medications like Excedrin, Fioricet and Fiorinal can also be used,” says Dr. Chaudhary, cautioning patients not to use abortive medications more that 8-10 days per month “to avoid development of medication-overuse headaches.”

If abortive treatment doesn’t work, rescue therapy, or the use of a stronger painkiller such as opioids or IV treatment, may be used once a month or so, according to Dr. Lenaerts.

Prophylactic therapy, which is typically done for a few months until the patient has one or fewer weekly migraines, includes taking medications daily to reduce the frequency of symptoms.

“Multiple Botox injections in the scalp have also been found to be effective,” says Dr. Khan, noting, “Anti-anxiety medicines are sometimes used to help with the severe distress caused by the pain, and may help the person ‘sleep the headache off.’”

5 Wrong Ways to Raise a Leader

ise words like “Follow the Golden Rule” or “Practice what you preach” have been passed down from generation to generation. We heard these sayings from our parents, who heard them from their parents, who heard them…well you know how it goes. Ancient wisdom aside, parenting is more stressful today than ever. We asked two local professionals to weigh in on the mistakes parents sometimes make that could keep children from becoming leaders when they grow up.

1 / Allowing technology to interfere with healthy social interactions. “Oftentimes the whole family spends nights with their eyes glued to their devices, so parents are modeling a social disconnectedness to their children,” says Christopher Taylor, a licensed marriage and family therapist (MFT) in Folsom who counsels clients with parenting challenges. “Parents should be encouraged to set ‘no technology’ zones and times, because it’s important for children to develop strong interpersonal skills. Leadership involves having a high level of aptitude in relationship-building and communicating with others.”

It’s common to see parents push an activity that is not the child’s choice, such as when a father insists his son be a football player, yet the boy is interested in art. Taylor urges parents to patiently explore their children’s ideas and strengths. “The better approach for parents is to walk their kids through the steps necessary to reach success in their own area of interest,” he advises. “This can help children develop strategic planning skills at a young age and learn to take responsibility for their choices.”

develop the ability to deal with feelings that may be uncomfortable or unpleasant, says Patricia Brunner, Ph.D., a psychologist in Roseville who specializes in child therapy (she also works with teens and adults). “While we are striving to raise kids’ self-esteem, there are missed opportunities to help them learn to cope with the bad stuff—stress, disappointment, sadness, worry and just plain old bad things that happen,” cautions Dr. Brunner. She suggests two approaches. “First, parents should model a healthy way to handle the negative events that happen in our own lives. Secondly, don’t rescue kids too quickly—being cut from a team, getting a bad grade, etc.—instead, help them identify their feelings and move through them with actions toward better coping next time.”

On June 27, PMSG will host its fourth annual Hangtown Cranker Classic, a handcycle and bicycle ride celebrating athletes of all physical abilities. Access Leisure will be on hand to fit participants without bikes to hand and recumbent models while distributing information about local, regional and national recreation programs for the mobility impaired.

Murray’s 21-point list of goals for PMSG’s future include establishing a bi-monthly newsletter, forming outreach teams to visit local schools, securing office space and growing the Rehabilitation Fund, which assists applicants in purchasing medical equipment, participating in specialized physical therapy programs, and costs associated with participation in athletic events.

“Obviously, support can be monetary; however, a more valuable and longer-lasting support occurs when the community joins us at a group meeting, a board meeting or a special event,” Murray explains. “I like participating and being in the trenches—riding the trails, doing home and hospital visits with newbies, bucking Medicare [and] Medicaid policies, advocating where advocacy is appropriate, and sleeping happy.”

lthough he spent 32 years as a high school teacher and athletic coach, Lynn Murray says he learned the greatest lesson of his life not in the classroom, but after surviving a 30-foot fall that broke his back and put him in a wheelchair.

“I’m not much for religion, but I like the idea of having a purpose, of being here for a reason and that sort of thing,” he shares.

“The way I see it, it’s pretty simple. I’m damn lucky to be here. So, if there’s anything I can do for folks going through the stuff I did already, then I’m on it.”

After successfully navigating his own road to recovery, Murray founded the Placerville Spinal Cord Injury Support Group in 2007 to help others facing life-altering ambulatory injuries. Three years later, the organization gained non-profit status and became the Placerville Mobility Support Group (PMSG).

“We’re in the business of improving the physical, mental and emotional health of persons with any form of ambulation impairment,” Murray explains. “You may have a spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, be a stroke victim, an amputee, have post-polio, transverse myelitis—any condition that makes walking impossible or close to it.”

PMSG promotes its motto to “Get up, get out, get better,” during free meetings held the fourth Monday of each month at Round Table Pizza on Placerville’s Main Street. Every gathering sees a mix of community members living with mobility impairments, their friends, family, caregivers, and the general public sharing a meal while promoting camaraderie and understanding.

f you live in the Folsom, El Dorado Hills or Placerville area, you’ve undoubtedly driven on Highway 50. It bisects the county connecting Folsom to Lake Tahoe and the Nevada state line. But did you know that Highway 50 is one of the longest highways in the U.S.—connecting Sacramento to Ocean City, Maryland, and covering a distance of over 3,000 miles?

Highway 50 was established as part of the U.S. highway system in 1926 connecting Sacramento to Annapolis. In later years, the route was extended west to San Fra n c i s co a n d e a s t to O ce a n City, but in 1972 the route from Sacramento to San Francisco was replaced with interstate highways. It travels through 12 states (California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia) and is one of the last coast-to-coast roadways that remains intact; in fact, it’s the only U.S. highway that hasn’t been designated as an interstate.

East of Placerville, Highway 50 roughly follows the route of a wagon trail discovered by John C. Johnson in the 1840s (see the May issue). Known as Johnson’s Cutoff, the trail was used by emigrants traveling to Placerville and Sacramento but hadn’t been developed into anything more than a footpath for pack trains. In the late 1850s, the state conducted surveys looking for a location for an official improved wagon road, and Johnson’s Cutoff was the favored route. construction of the road, but funding failed.

In 1857, J.B. Crandall, who owned the Pioneer Stage Line with service between Sacramento and Placerville, sent a stage loaded with seven state wagon road commissioners and a reporter eastbound over Johnson’s Cutoff. The stage reached Carson Valley in 27 hours; the following day Crandall started regular stage service between Placerville and Carson Valley. Private operators took it upon themselves to build the road, each improving a section and charging a toll to pass over it. By the 1860s, it was the favored route for travelers heading west.

When silver was discovered in the Comstock Lode, the road became the major thoroughfare for eastbound freight wagons delivering goods to the mines in Nevada. Hotels, lodges, roadhouses and stables lined the road. The route was also used by the riders of the Pony Express from 1860 to 1861, and by the transcontinental telegraph line.

In 1895, the State Bureau of Highways purchased the road designating it as Highway 1, the first state highway. The road was paved in 1923, and later became known as Highway 50. It served as an important part of the Lincoln Highway, which was established in 1913 to connect New York and San Francisco.

Portions of the old road, bridges (visit bridgehunter.com/ca/ el-dorado/bh49380) and roadside advertisements painted on rock faces can be found on back roads alongside Highway 50 east of Placerville.

6 Energy-Efficient Window Treatments

esides contributing to the design and coziness of a room, window treatments—whether drapes and blinds or shutters and shades—help block sunlight from heating up the house on hot days and keep warm or cool air from escaping through leaky windows. Some materials do a better job than others. Here are six ecochic treatments that may work for you.

By definition, drapes are pleated panels that hang from hooks and attach to small slides on the rod. When it comes to choosing to drape, a layered look delivers the most options for light control and energy efficiency.

According to energy.gov, should you choose to line a medium-toned drapery with a white plastic backing, you could save up to 33 percent on heat gain in the summer and 10 percent on heat loss in the winter.

1 / CURTAINS Curtains consist of panels of fabric that are gathered on a rod attached by tabs, ties or rings. Eco-friendly fabrics such as organic cotton and hemp are available in a growing number of colors and patterns for custom window treatments. Naturally woven shades made of bamboo, reeds and grasses have a handmade feel and an organic texture. For the most efficiency,

5 / VALANCES These top treatments provide the crowning glory for a window. Valances are generally shortened versions of curtains, drapes or fabric shades, 12-18 inches long. Used alone, they bring style to an otherwise plain window.

Place over another treatment and they can seal the heading and add a flourish. The extra layer sitting atop the face of the window will capture any cool air that may seep in.

6 / CORNICES Because their edges are so clearly delineated, cornices add architectural interest.

Like valances, they can be used alone or paired with other window treatments.

When covered in batting and fabric, cornices soften the overall look of the window and absorb extra heat and chill. Wood cornices can mimic the look of deep crown molding and should coordinate with the other woodwork and trim in the room. Here again you will want to use FSC-certified woods and low-or no-VOC stains and paints to finish the wood.

Blinds and shutters have adjustable louvers and veins that can be tilted to filter the light, leveled to reveal the view or shifted to completely block the view. Blinds can be used solo, or—for a layered look and extra insulation—under top treatments made of fabric. These types of coverings are reported to reduce heat gain by up to 45 percent; just be sure to look for shutters made of FSC-certified hardwood and finish them with low-or-no VOC stains and sealants. 5 NEARBY TRAILS 1/New York Creek Trail in El Dorado Hills is a leisurely 1.5-mile nature trail that’s studded with oaks and nestled in the middle of El Dorado Hills; great for walking or riding.

2/Browns Ravine Marina Trail (aka Dike 8) near Folsom Lake is a great hike that starts at Folsom Point and finishes up at Browns Ravine Marina.

If you can, try to hit around sunset for some gorgeous views.

3/Miner’s Ravine in Roseville winds from Sierra College Boulevard to Folsom Road through wooded greenbelts and suburban neighborhoods (approximately four miles one way; eight miles round-trip). Whether on foot or two wheels, you’ll get a whole new appreciation for Roseville when you view it from this vantage point.

4/Black Hole of Calcutta Falls near Cool is an easy walking trail (roughly two miles roundtrip). But the hike is only part of it: The falls are the real star, and their beauty is on display year-round.

5/South Yuba River State Park: West Trail outside Nevada City is a fantastic scenic trail and notable for being one of the first in the U.S. that is wheelchair accessible! It’s about four miles round-trip and is well worth the trip.

Dorado Hills Summer Concerts in the Park series begins June 5 at 7 p.m. and continues every Friday through the summer. Live on the Boulevard, the Thursday night El Dorado Hills Town Center’s concert series, goes from June 19 through September 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

If you really want to head up the hill, there’s always Music on the Beach at Kings Beach on Fridays from 6:30-9 p.m., June 19 through August 7 (excluding July 3).

Bring a can of crescent roll dough, wrap the dough around a stick and put it over the campfire or better still, wrap that dough around a hot dog on a stick for a “crescent dog.” Take a can of cinnamon roll dough, put rolls in hollowed out oranges, cook over the coals and then put them right in your face. Grab a can of biscuit dough, cut a hole in the middle of the biscuit, dust with cinnamon and powdered sugar and fry in a skillet; voila, campfire donuts!

If you’re above “cans of dough” or you don’t understand what a “can of dough” even is, try fancy glamping fondue: grab a wheel of your favorite brie or camembert, poke holes in it, pour brandy over the top, wrap in foil and stick in the coals until you have drunken melty cheese.

Instead of a marshmallow, you can try roasting Starburst on a stick (warning: molten!); or just stick with marshmallows. Let’s not reinvent the wheel here, people. However, “campfire cones” are the best thing ever: Fill a sugar cone with chocolate pieces, marshmallows, whatever you want, wrap in foil and cook until deliciously melty and then top with whipped cream. I guess you could put Starburst in there, too?

Not so much a recipe as a neat breakfast party trick, try campfire bacon, aka artfully weaving bacon onto toasting forks and frying over the campfire.

The Venn diagrams of “Camping Food and College Dorm Food” intersect at omelet in a bag: Dump all of your omelet ingredients into a Ziploc bag, put it in a pot of simmering water, and then question your life choices. Or ditch the bag omelet and eat a campfire apple filled with Nutella with a big old smile on your face. Yes, it’s a thing…a beautiful, beautiful thing.

Where the Fun and Food Never Stop

vergrown and full of history, Volcano possesses the old-town charm that a lot of former mining communities have had to renovate and restore to obtain. Volcano just is—it feels unchanged from its earliest days in the most charming way imaginable, and is entirely without artifice. It’s not the kind of town you just “happen” to pass through or “stumble upon” while out Sunday driving; it’s tucked away in the foothills in such a way that you have to plan a visit. Once you read about the culinary delights awaiting you at the Volcano Union Inn and Pub, however, you’ll be programming your GPS. A former boarding house built in 1880 and restored in 2000 into a four-room bed and breakfast and pub, the Union is serious about delighting you, culinarily speaking.

On the sunny afternoon of my visit, it was a packed house—lodgers and visitors planning winery trips or returning from Black Chasm Caves (the little kid in the mining helmet was kind of a giveaway)—and the buzz was lively and welcoming. Thankfully, the dining room is expansive and there’s plenty of outdoor seating in the beer garden, so the friendly staff accommodated our party of two easily.

I regret sharing it, because I could’ve eaten a whole serving on my own.

Mushroom Bruschetta

Fried Chicken and Smoked Cheddar Mac and Cheese with Greens

The menu offers an array of starters, salads, burgers and entrées, all crafted with locally sourced ingredients and simple, scratch-made flare. For starters, my husband and I opted for the mushroom bruschetta, which boasted a variety of earthy mushrooms sautéed in herbed cream sauce and served over grilled bread. I regret sharing it, because I could’ve eaten a whole serving on my own.

For mains, we ordered the lamb burger (for him) and the fried chicken and smoked cheddar mac and cheese with greens (for me). The burger—wrapped in house-made pita and accompanied by olive tapenade, cucumbers, tangy tzatziki and tomatoes—was pleasantly messy in its juiciness. My cooked-to-perfection fried chicken was golden brown and tender, while the mac and cheese was incredibly creamy and flavor-packed. Let’s just say I didn’t so much eat it as inhale it while weeping tears of joy.

As always, I left no room for dessert but promised my husband we’ll come back for the banana cream pie and fresh fruit cobbler!

Authentic barbecue, delicious spaghetti and charity abound at this year’s Spaghetti Western. Hosted at Cooper Vineyards in Plymouth and in its eighth year, the event is set for Saturday, June 20, at 6 p.m. and aims to raise funds for cancer research grants at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. Sponsored by the Amador Cancer Research Foundation, the Spaghetti Western will feature dinner, a live and silent auction, live music and dancing. Guests can purchase wine, beer and soda; water bottles will be provided at no cost.

The weight of a (massive) squash on display at the Fourth Annual El Dorado County Fair in 1862. (For context, 86 pounds is roughly the same weight as a dishwasher or a full-grown Labrador retriever.) This year’s El Dorado County Fair hits town June 18-21.

“Many locals come, [and] it’s a very fun evening...[plus], you’re donating to a cause that affects all of us,” explains Amador Cancer Research Foundation Board Member, Cathy Landgraf. This year, highlights from the all-volunteer event include draft beer from Amador Brewing Company, live music from Dick Cooper’s Country Western Band, and Teo Torres from KCRA 3 as emcee. Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for children.
