ne house, seven girls, two bathrooms. Yes, I just returned from a long overdue girls’ weekend in Santa Barbara, my old college stomping grounds. It had been years—way too long in fact—since we roomies were all together in one place at one time. Having rented a house near the beach and right downtown, the weekend delivered countless throw-your-head-backlaughing moments reminiscent of the amazing times spent together in our 20s. Regardless of the years passed, time zones crossed and children born—it was like we never missed a beat. Returning home after pretending to be 21 again for a few days, I was filled with giddy upon recounting the weekend to friends and family. I often daydream and say to myself, “oh to be back in school again…” as if my thoughts could mentally turn back the clock. But after this weekend, I realized, who needs school to feel young and carefree (I get that I’m not old, but you know what I mean…)?

All it took for me was a break from my big girl schedule to “play” with friends again.

The moments of silliness we share with loved ones keep that eternal flame of youth aglow, pushing us to never stop achieving that which our souls whisper to seek. This month find plenty of inspiration to revisit your beginnings in our “20+ Under 20” feature that captures local youth following their dreams.

athy Bean and her husband and son moved to El Dorado County over 30 years ago, drawn to the close proximity of Lake Tahoe and the exemplary school districts in the region. “It seemed like a great place to raise our son,” Bean says. In 2010, she retired after nearly a decade as superintendent of the El Dorado County Office of Education, and she is proud of what she was able to achieve during her tenure. “I liked doing what I could to provide purposeful education for kids,” she enthuses. “It was about helping 8 styleedc.com - May 2015

to ensure that kids were college and career ready.”

Bean may be retired, but she definitely knows how to keep busy. She has volunteered for many local nonprofits over the years, including New Morning Youth and Family Services (newmorningyfs.org), an organization that provides support for atrisk youth and their families. During her time on the board, Bean saw the construction of a 24-hour Emergency Children’s Center for runaway, homeless or in-crisis youth. In

addition, she is the current chairperson of the Women’s Fund El Dorado (womens fundeldorado.org). In helping to fulfill their mission to provide grants and support to area nonprofits, Bean hopes to someday break the cycle of poverty in the El Dorado region.

Despite these and other community activities, she remains modest about her achievements.

“I think we all have a responsibility to do what we can to help improve the well-being of the community,” she explains. “It’s just who I am.”

They have an extensive menu—from sandwiches and salads to burgers and hot dogs—that’s guaranteed to satisfy just about any craving. After reviewing my options, I decided on a classic BBQ Burger. My food was ready in a flash, and I couldn’t wait to dig in. The burger was topped with melted cheese, crispy onion rings and bacon, with a smothering of tangy barbecue sauce (as any good burger should be).

Q: What’s the difference between foot reflexology and foot massage?

ummer is almost upon us! Start the month off with a visit to the Spring Antique, Craft and Garden Show—taking place May 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Center. This indooroutdoor show will feature a variety of antiques, handmade crafts and garden accessories. Entrance is free, and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Learn which herbs, trees and shrubs are the best at the Master Gardeners’ presentation titled “Can You Eat Your Landscape?” on May 13 from 9 a.m. to noon. Celebrate Older Americans Month with a Talent Show on May 20 at 1 p.m. at the Cameron Park Community Center.

Mature adults won’t want to miss the programs and activities offered in the 50+ Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On May 14 at 1 p.m., Mark Harris from the Cameron Park Community Foundation will be a guest speaker; and on May 28 at 1 p.m., Bob Billingley from the Mountain Democrat will speak about “How to Be Happy in a Negative World.” In addition to these activities, there’s also “Tai Chi for Better Balance” and pickleball.

On May 23, head to the Cameron Park Community Center for “Welcome to Summer,” a free swim day featuring class demonstrations, food and vendor booths, giveaways and more. Get the Summer Activity Guide now and find some exciting new classes, including zentangle, fashion drawing, nutrition essentials, writing, hypnotherapy, and legal programs. My Super Son Grows Up

T

his kid. Who came into the world screaming and squirming so much I nearly dropped him moments after the nurse placed him in my arms. I held him closely, tightly. His first exhalations were wails in my ear.

This kid, with the quick laugh and jacko‘-lantern grin, whose face was just another surface for food at mealtime. His eyes snapped open each morning like big blue headlights, and then spent the day flicking toward the slightest little everything. He went straight from crawling to running, a diapered machine of perpetual motion, a little man with a mind of his own, whose first words were “me do!” On walks, he was always five yards ahead glancing back—not to see if we were there, but wondering what the hell was taking us so long. Once, he squeezed through a golf course fence and ran straight for a sand trap, turning it into his own personal sandbox until we flagged down a course marshal, who chased him back to us.

This kid. His fearlessness to dirt, heights and things that left dents made him a great—if sometimes misguided—little helper, like when he was three and decided our carpet needed watering so he brought the hose inside and turned it on.

This kid, who we noticed early on was repeatedly flicking his wrists, shrugging his shoulders, clearing his throat and flaring his nostrils. Who genuinely couldn’t sit still (save for back scratches from Mom—then he could be still for hours). Sometimes he talked way too much; sometimes he was way too impulsive. Listening was a challenge. In third grade he would be diagnosed with both Tourette’s and ADHD. We worried other kids might make fun. Many didn’t.

Some did.

This kid, who we put on medication— the first of which dimmed the light in those bright blue eyes; and another that made him nauseous. We decided medication created

more problems than it solved, when a third gave him terrible nightmares.

Without meds, focusing could be tough for this kid. If something interested him, fine.

If it didn’t? Getting him to concentrate was like trying to thread a needle in a whitewater raft.

But this kid was also stubborn .

Surprisingly, if something didn’t interest him, he didn’t dismiss it. He’d chip away at and come back to it for as long as he could. He repeated algebra twice, but passed. He retook countless tests, but he passed. He never gave up, never threw in the towel. Rarely got frustrated, actually.

Maybe those involuntary shoulder shrugs were indicative of a steel will, a resolve that would find the impediments of adversity... eh, unimpressive.

There were teachers along the way, too. Teachers who saw someone a little different, but instead of trying to sand his anomalies away, polished them, and made them shine. Harvey. O’Conner. Caulkins.

Silva. They encouraged him to grab onto those things he was interested in and let the other stuff take care of itself.

And as he did that? This kid blossomed.

He built three guitars in eighth grade, was a certified scuba diver at 15, and became a lifeguard at 17. He helped found a mountain bike team at his high school. He spent his senior year in the ROP firefighting program.

He’s a sensitive and expressive writer. Loves history. He has friends and a girlfriend, and sometimes still helps around the house— although his room is probably eligible for disaster relief funds.

This month, this kid will graduate. He did well in subjects he liked and well enough in subjects he didn’t. That’s fine by me, because more than a precious GPA, this is a kid who knows where he wants to go, has the self-confidence and drive to get there, and, still quick with that jack-o’-lantern grin, possesses a joie de vivre that some people never find in decades of living.

raderie between the artists, as her parents were members of the El Sobrante Crafters Guild. When she tried to find a similar organization for herself, the search proved fruitless. “During the first few years, I looked for an organization similar to the one my parents belonged to and was unable to find one, so my husband created the El Dorado Crafters Guild,” she says.

The EDCG is a thriving group of over 100 crafters and artisans helping each other to promote, educate and disseminate information about opportunities, tricks of the trade, and even laws and regulations regarding the production and sale of handmade wares. Membership to the EDCG has few stipulations, requiring only that the artist or crafter lives in El Dorado County and their items be handmade. Currently functioning entirely on Facebook, in order to make the group accessible to as many crafters as possible, the guild is a boon to both the novice and the veteran crafter.

With high hopes on the horizon for an upcoming holiday boutique, Wong encourages crafters—even those who only

consider themselves hobbyists—to join and utilize the information and ideas available to them. She stresses the welcoming and supportive environment of the guild as the biggest asset to members.

“The most important thing [for crafters to know] about the El Dorado Crafters Guild is that it is truly a crafters’ network. We have a lot of knowledgeable and talented people who are members.”

rafters—an often-overlooked group of artists—are also the most accessible producers of contemporary art. Their work can be found everywhere—from small local businesses to large craft fairs and boutique showcases.

Handcrafted wares, including jewelry, clothing and home décor, are a reflection of the broader trends in the art and fashion world; yet finding a source of support and connection can be nearly impossible for these masters of artistic convention.

Thankfully, the El Dorado Crafters Guild brings together those previously left to wander aimlessly in search of alliance with their peers.

Nancy Wong, along with her husband, Anthony, formed the El Dorado Crafters Guild (EDCG) in 2013.

She explains, “The guild is a network for local crafters. We share ideas, support each other in new ventures, and share information about upcoming events.”

Wong had been making handmade crafts her entire life, but didn’t start selling them at local craft fairs until 2011. She had grown up with parents who were crafters so was well-versed on the benefits of cama-

he paw print shaped bumper sticker asks: “Who rescued who?” Although the grammar is incorrect, the sentiment is spot on.

Who benefits from the partnership more: the human or the pet?

Judith Esquivel, a licensed marriage and family therapist practicing in Roseville, says “Pets of any size, from fish to horses, are instrumental in helping people get better from physical or emotional issues.” She says there are multiple scientific studies that prove pets enrich our lives in many ways.

“Animals are very intuitive to our needs and feelings,” Esquivel says. “They care about you in a way a fellow human might not.”

Dr. Brad Cahoon, owner and veterinarian of the Veterinary Healing Centers of Folsom and El Dorado Hills, agrees. “My relationship with animals as a veterinarian has enabled me to value them in a unique way,” Cahoon explains. “They don’t judge you and are always loyal friends and companions.”

The Truth About Foster Care

W

hen Destiny Bullock’s mother was arrested for drug possession and her grandfather was too elderly to care for her, the then oneyear-old was put into foster care—a temporary living arrangement for neglected or abused youth whose parents are legally not capable of caring for them. At 14-monthsold, Lilliput Children’s Services placed her with the Bullocks, a family who fought to keep her, even after Destiny’s mother was released from jail and wanted custody. Her birth mother “was unable to prove to the court that she could provide and take care of me,” says the 22-year-old, who was eventually adopted by the Bullocks and now lives in Citrus Heights.

While Destiny forgets most of her childhood, one thing stands out: “I remember having a close bond with my family, especially my mom, Peggy,” she says. These days, Destiny is happy and eager to get rid of foster care’s stigma. “Being a foster child doesn’t automatically make one bad or damaged,” she says, explaining kids need good role models and a positive environment. “The key is to surround children with strong role models who can build [them] up and teach them how to be a good person,” Destiny says.

Being in foster care isn’t easy. Children are separated from loved ones, friends, schools, teachers and everything they know. “It’s very

scary for a young person—they are typically removed from their home suddenly, by a stranger, and with little understanding of why,” says Dr. Laura Heintz, PsyD, chief executive officer at Stanford Youth Solutions in Sacramento. “Then they await placement or go to a shelter. Wherever they go, it’s different than [what] they know. It’s hard to have a sense of belonging.”

Heintz explains kids in foster care also face emotional family visits, as well as court hearings. Life feels “unpredictable and it’s very hard for them to trust adults,” she says, noting if kids can make a connection, it’s devastating when those adults—such as social workers—leave the child’s life.

Many kids get reunited with their birth parents, but others remain in the system.

The median number of months in foster care for kids in California is 14. Of the kids who entered in the first half of 2012, one year later, 39 percent were reunified with their families and 58 percent remained in foster care.

“There are far more children in foster care that need a permanent, adoptive home than there are families available to adopt them,” says Elizabeth Morabito, community relations manager at Lilliput Children’s Services, noting Lilliput recruits foster families who are also committed to adoption.

“In California, about 10,000 children are not going to return home and need to be

“All it takes is one caring adult to make a difference in the life of a child,” says Morabito. “With the support of a family, youth have better chances of graduating from high school, attending college and holding a steady job.”

he Sheriff’s Posse of El Dorado County is a labor of love for Hal Barker. After a fulfilling 50-year career as a policeman, he decided he still had more to give. “I was a county sheriff and looked around to see what kind of coverage there would be for my deputies, particularly their families, if any of them were killed in the line of duty. It became fairly clear to me that there was no specific way we could cover expenses for a family who’d lost a deputy with county funds, and there’s a long period of time before benefits kick in. In the meantime, bills go on, diapers and groceries have to be purchased, and the rent has to be paid; so I decided to develop an organization that would have enough money to assist a family in the unlikely event of that kind of tragedy,” he says.

Thus, the Sheriff’s Posse of El Dorado County was born in 2000, after a friend supported his endeavor to seek out people 24 styleedc.com - May 2015

who would be willing to join the organization for a fee of $600, and yearly dues thereafter of $100, that would support the family of a fallen deputy in the line of duty.

“I sold those memberships myself when I told each of them, ‘look, this is a support organization and in the event of tragedy we’re going to do this, and I’d like you to be part of that.’ Within a month or so, I had 100 members. It’s not a hard sell!” he states.

As of 2013, the Posse has joined forces with the California Peace Officers’ Memorial and shares the responsibility of helping a California deputy’s family in times of tragedy, with a check for $7,500. Fortunately, no fatal incident has occurred since 2000, but the Posse has helped in other ways. One winter, an officer was en route to a Christmas event with his family when they were met with a horrific traffic accident. Luckily their lives were spared, but it looked like their Christmas might be ruined. That’s when Barker asked the

Posse if they could, in any way, salvage what was left of the family’s Christmas.

The group’s board of directors decided to chip in and gift the family presents—ultimately bringing a little cheer to their lives that year. “The other board members’ intentions are much like mine: to be there in case they’re needed in times of tragedy,” Barker asserts.

As for newer ventures, the Sheriff’s Posse has decided to offer sponsorships for children of law enforcement officers of El Dorado County, with money collected from a ticketed summer barbecue event that is open to the public. They also hold an annual picnic for sheriff’s office members and their families. There are currently around 130 members in the Posse and anyone else is welcome to join (for a fee of $500)—as long as they’re committed to the cause.

john c. “cock-eye” johnson Sierra Nevada’s True Trailblazer

ention the California Gold Rush and several names come to mind: John Sutter, James Marshall and Samuel Brannen. While many other emigrants made significant contributions to the growth and development of the area, their names have been largely forgotten. One such distinguished citizen in El Dorado County was John Calhoun Johnson.

Often referred to as “Cock-Eye” Johnson because he was cross-eyed, Johnson came to California prior to 1849. In August of that year, he settled at a spot six miles east of Placerville in the vicinity of present-day Apple Mountain Golf Course; a plaque placed by E Clampus Vitus in May 2014 near the fourth hole marks the approximate location of his home. Often referred to as Six Mile House, the original structure was built by Johnson— along with John H. Phillips and his wife Sophronia—and served as a boarding house. In addition to Johnson and the Phillips, the U.S. Census (in 1850) lists 14 other unrelated adults living in the house.

Johnson also ran a sawmill, store and campground on his 320-acre ranch. It was reported at the time that up to 1,000 miners could be found camped on his property. During the Indian Wars of 1850-51, Johnson’s ranch served as an encampment for the state militia. He earned the title of adjutant, and was known thereafter as colonel. Along with practicing law in the district and circuit courts of El Dorado, Amador, Nevada and Sacramento Counties, he also served as El Dorado County’s first treasurer (1850-1852), and in 1855 was elected to represent El Dorado County in the California State Assembly.

Contrary to popular folklore, Johnson, not Snowshoe Thompson, was the first trans-Sierra mail carrier. Using the Carson Emigrant Trail and Truckee River Routes to deliver mail to Carson Valley, he became aware that a better route was needed to traverse the Sierra Nevada. Along with a Delaware Indian guide named Fallen Leaf, he set out to explore the peaks and passes, looking for a better trail through the mountains. During this expedition, he mapped out a new route (dubbed Johnson’s Cutoff), discovered and named Fallen Leaf Lake in honor of his Indian guide, and is credited with giving the name Lake Bigler to the body of water now known as Lake Tahoe.

Johnson’s Cutoff shaves more than 50 miles off the Carson Emigrant Trail and its highest peaks are 2,0 0 0 feet lower.

Highway 50 roughly follows the Placerville 1800s route, passing through Meyers and over Echo Summit before descending along the South Fork of the American River. The road was improved in the late 1850s and became a major thoroughfare from Placerville to Carson City when gold and silver were discovered in the Comstock Lode. It also served as the route for the Pony Express and later became part of the Lincoln Highway.

In 1854, Johnson married Emily Hagadorn, an emigrant from Ohio, and together they raised nine children. In 1876, at the age of 54, Johnson and one of his sons traveled to Tres Alamos, Arizona, to purchase land and start a farm. During their trip, Johnson was killed by an Apache raiding party and is now buried in Arizona.

Having been in a place of personal hardship with her parents’ divorce and staying away from school her sophomore year, she’s come a long way since then. “I have overcome and defeated things a lot of people would never recover from,” says the resilient twelfth grader.

As the student council president and “unofficial peer counselor” to her classmates, Floyd has won several academic awards and is a great example to her classmates. Now, she’s set her sights on becoming a cosmetologist in order to help “women feel good inside by helping them look good on the outside,” and she’s excited to start an internship in Los Angeles that will allow her to shadow a makeup and hair stylist on the sets of Netflix movies.

“What motivates me are all the people who told me I would never amount to anything. I strive to prove them wrong and prove to myself that I can do anything I put my mind to,” says this determined 17-year-old.— TM

At 6’1,” you would think Kassidy DeLapp was an accomplished sportsperson— and you’d be right. “When I was in fourth grade, my parents signed me up for El Dorado Hills Youth Basketball, and I fell in love with the sport,” she says. So far, the Oak Ridge High School freshman has been selected for an All Star team in softball for FGSL, has been part of the team that won the girls’ basketball championship at Marina Middle School, won the overall girls’ high jump in eighth grade, and made the varsity Oak Ridge basketball team.

With the majority of her time now spent on the basketball court, DeLapp not only works at improving her own skills, but also helps her mother, a coach, to train younger girls in basketball. “I’m a silly girl who can make you laugh more in one minute than you do in an hour, and I’m also the hardest worker you’ll ever meet,” DeLapp says. “You will always be successful if you work hard, ask questions, believe in yourself and most of all have fun!” she adds.—TM

Meghan Schoener has been a Girl Scout ever since she was fouryears-old and has won the bronze, silver and gold awards along with two Catholic Girl Scout awards. “I have learned valuable leadership, teamwork and presentation skills through my experience with Girl Scouts,” she says. Having volunteered at the California State Fair for the past three years on the Youth Task Force Volunteer team (where she organized and led a cooking demonstration), and served at the Upper Room in Placerville, Schoener has raked up 982 hours of volunteer work during her time at Oak Ridge High School. With all that experience, she is now off to UNLV to study hospitality at the Honors College. Schoener’s other ambition to row could not be fulfilled as she’s 4’10,” but when she was offered the role of coxswain, she eagerly accepted and has been coxing for the Sac State Masters since 2013. She’s glad for all the opportunities life has given her—from being adopted from Russia as a baby to heading off to college—and attributes her success to her parents, older brother and dear grandmother.—TM

4 / Nicole Sutherland, 19, Shingle Springs Nicole Sutherland is a spirited teen. She completed almost four years of high school in just over a year. Not only did she study hard, but she also participated in the Drama Club and was selected for the Poetry Out Loud competition to represent her school in the county finals. She also helped her school with a spaghetti fundraiser for a student whose apartment caught fire and was part of a school program called Girl’s Talk where she took part in plays that tackled issues like bullying, mental health, self-love, parental problems, etc. She aspires to earn two bachelor degrees for gem cutting and designing. “I’m an artist at heart, and I haven’t been able to do much in the past—due to money and family problems—so I decided to go to college and preserve my future,” says the spunky teen. She’s a hard

worker, too, working seven days a week with only a few hours of alone time. Through it all, she reminds herself, and the world to: “Be guided by wisdom and kindness, and you will be rich. Be guided by greed and selfishness, and you will be poor.”—TM

5 / Chris Dias, 18, Cameron Park “Space and aeronautics were just always cool to me as a kid,” claims Chris Dias. Even cooler, is the fact that he now has the opportunity to join the U.S. Air Force, with a contract already in place. He was also the first student from his school to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. after scoring a 93 percentile on the ASVAB. All this attention eventually led to Senator Ted Gaines congratulating him and sending him a letter of recognition.

Dias likes to downplay all his triumphs though. “I just got lucky—by being in the right place at the right time” he says of his impressive achievements. Apart from assisting in various school projects, including the newspaper and yearbook, Dias loves spending time online playing games and reading Homestuck—and he suggests you read it, too. He also enjoys being a teenager and revels in the simple things in life, like the one time he sat with his friends after a movie, chomping down on burgers!—TM

6 / Lindsey Marie Rogers, 18, Pollock Pines Lindsey Rogers continually displays her natural role as a leader by volunteering at Marshall Hospital on the Junior Volunteer team. She also serves on her church’s worship team as a soloist and guitarist, and teaches children’s Sunday school once a month. One of her greatest achievements, however, was developing a yearbook for homeschool families in El Dorado County. Rogers took the initiative to research and create a yearbook that will “capture precious moments in the lives of so many homeschooling families throughout the years.” She organized a staff and says she has “nearly doubled the number of participating students.” Once she graduates, this 18-year-old plans to, “gradually hand the labor of love over to [her] brother, Luke,” and is confident he will successfully take charge of the operation. Rogers has plans to pursue a career in the medical field and become a labor and delivery nurse. Her advice to her under-20 peers is to: “Remember where you’ve been. Don’t be ignorant, but be willing to be transformed and humbled by the journey that is laid out for you.”—RM

20+ UNDER 20 7 / Rebekah (Becky) Riepe, 17, Placerville Becky Riepe is a hard-working member of El Dorado County, as she’s not only in school but house-sits, cleans, provides pet care, nannies and works at a local ranch in exchange for riding lessons. With such a full plate, it’s hard to believe that Riepe also dances! To date, she says her favorite dance she’s done is “a contemporary [one] that [she and her] classmates performed at the Harris Center for the Arts. Her teacher, Kendra Bermudez, choreographed it to a slow rendition of the song “New York, New York” as a tribute to 9/11.” Her real passion, however, is in horseback riding, as she’s learned to ride both Western and dressage. “My favorite thing about horseback riding is how relaxing it is, and the sense of accomplishment I feel after a good ride.

One of the best feelings is finding a horse that you really click with, and getting a chance to improve your skills by riding them.” Her advice to the under-20 community is to: “Ask the question: ‘Can I do anything to solve a problem today?’ If there is, then I have a starting point to figure out a plan and take steps toward remedying it. If not, then I know I can calm down, relax, and enjoy the day I’ve been given.”—RM

8 / Gina Phillipsen, 17, Shingle Springs Gina Phillipsen has been raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind of San Rafael, California, since 2010. “I have a strong desire to provide the gift of love—a fully trained dog that represents a key to freedom and independence for those without sight,” says this twelfth grader who’s now raising her fourth puppy, Nepal. Not only does she put in hard work toward this noble cause but Phillipsen also belongs to the youth organization, 4-H where she is an All Star Ambassador and visits 4-H clubs all over the country, participates in statewide meetings and involves herself in various projects. Phillipsen also takes part in community service programs like blood drives, where she’s donated blood on multiple occasions, as well as volunteered at the events. She also loves math, having won awards at the Ponderosa High School Math Steeple Chase and at the American Mathematics Competition. “I love the clear-cut logic of problem solving,” she says. This innate sense of clarity and precision most likely put her on the El Dorado County Youth Trap Shooting Team as well. Successes aside, Phillipsen is happiest when her mother’s happy—like she says, “being the reason for her smile is forever heartwarming.”—TM

9 / Demetria (Demi) Whisenhunt, 18, El Dorado Hills Demi Whisenhunt is a senior at Oak Ridge High School and has achieved a 4.0 GPA. She enjoys helping at homeless shelters as well as animal shelters, churches and other organizations in the community. What’s more, she was invited to attend the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists in Washington, D.C. last November and received an award from the academy at the conference.

Upon her invitation to attend, Whisenhunt admits, “In all honesty, I thought it was a joke. [I couldn’t believe that] I was chosen to attend.” One of her favorite parts of the experience was watching a live surgery. Whisenhunt says, “Being in a room with fellow peers from across the nation that had the same passion as me was absolutely life-changing.” She has plans to further her education in medicine with an interest in emergency treatment and recognizes that other jobs offer flexible hours, less schooling and travel, but she believes the ability to save lives outweighs all of the benefits of different career paths. One piece of advice that has influenced her and that she believes is important for others to hear is to live each day like it’s your first—in other words, live every day in awe and wonder at what’s around you, as if it’s your first experience with everything.—RM

He also enjoys playing baseball, basketball, volleyball and soccer (his soccer team, Sac United, recently won the State Cup in their U13 division).

His favorite part about playing sports is “[getting to know] new people” and developing teamwork.

His soccer game is so advanced that he plays in the U13 division when most kids his age are playing in the U12 division. Achieving a perfect GPA is a difficult feat for most students, and when asked where his favorite place to study is, Abduila says, “My room—I like to listen to music.” Not only is this 11-year-old skilled in the classroom and on the soccer field, but he spends quite a bit of time doing volunteer work and particularly enjoys helping at hospitals. It’s no surprise that his advice to the under-20 community is to “never give up on your dreams, do well in education and play sports,” considering the words of wisdom he lives by are “study and stay focused on education.”—RM

“Teenagers have more power than they think,” says Alyssa Clay with confidence. “They don’t have to wait until they’re older—they can make a difference now.” Practicing what she preaches, this 15-year-old has been “making a difference” ever since she was a little girl. Instead of putting up a lemonade stand like other kids, Clay chose to bake dog treats and sell them, in order to donate blankets and dog toys to local animal rescues.

Her deep love for animals and advocacy of animal

rights has also led to her becoming a vegetarian—despite coming from a meat-loving family. “I’ve always loved animals—I was born that way. I empathize with them, and I want them to have safe and loving homes,” she says. Her latest accomplishment has been to organize the Bow Wow Brunch—a fund-raiser to help Foothill Dog Rescue of the Sierras. Clay is also an accomplished contemporary dancer and has been dancing ever since she was two years old. She now belongs to two competitive dance troupes and competes statewide. With dogged determination, Clay does it all. “My faith keeps me going,” she says. “I also find inspiration in my family, friends and, of course, my dogs!”—TM

dine We dropped by on a Saturday morning and the restaurant was well on its way to being full, with more folks coming in as time ticked on—clearly word is getting out that they serve a mean breakfast here!

I ordered the “California Kitchen” Benedict, and my husband ordered the Cajun breakfast, along with the regulation glass of orange juice and a cup of coffee for each of us.

What do we look like, animals? One thing I will say in favor of the coffee is, it never got low enough for me to look around for a server…refills aplenty here!

ll-day breakfasts are a good thing, and everyone needs a joint where they can roll up with baseball-capped unwashed hair, or bring out-of-town relatives for a guaranteed lovely (and tasty!) Sunday brunch. Dual-function is a must, and California Kitchen is just the place. The lovely old building—located on Main Street in the former home of Torino’s Italian Restaurant—has a classic style that makes the eatery feel warm and inviting. Seven days a week until 3 p.m., they serve breakfast as well as lunch in their sun-streamed dining room.

My Benedict featured the classic poached egg and hollandaise sauce, but was served on a potato pancake with tomatoes, onions and avocado, with a side of fresh fruit. The eggs were cooked perfectly (there’s nothing better than cutting into delicious egg pillows and discovering yolky goodness), and the fruit was fresh and juicy—the perfect palate cleanser for a seriously filling morning meal. My husband’s Cajun plate was a spicy concoction of andouille sausage, chicken, peppers, onions, mushrooms and asparagus, served with two eggs (over easy, of course) and sourdough toast.

In addition to the classic California diner fare, they have a section of the menu devoted to Mexican breakfasts (hola, molé huevos rancheros!), which is definitely on our list to try next time we’re craving full bellies on a weekend morning. You may come for the food, but you’ll stay for the sunshine and friendly service!

Although the size is large, the classrooms have a homey feel with teachers who truly care about the children's development. We work together on communicating with parents and developing each child's individual needs. It delights me that so many children have the opportunity to experience our program.
