She is especially proud of the nonprofit’s educational scholarships and Key Leader Camp, a summer camp that trains high-school-aged youth in leadership skills. Warden eventually served a term as president of the club, and more recently, she became the first woman to hold the position of lieutenant governor for Division 44. In her spare time, Warden is on the board of the Rubicon Trail Foundation, a nonprofit that helps maintain and protect the historic trail for future generations to enjoy. For Warden, it’s all about protecting the natural beauty of the place she’s always called home. “I’ve really never wanted to move away,” she says with a laugh. “I love it here!”

o r i Wa rd e n st i l l re m e m b e r s growing up amid her family’s pear orchards in Placerville, selling the fruit from a roadside stand and playing among the trees. “Sometimes we played in the irrigation ditch,” she reminisces.

“Nowadays, nobody would let their kids play in that!” After the “pear decline” of the ’50s, Warden’s family bought a garbage company. Rather than move away from her childhood home, however, Warden worked for her family and even ended up meeting her husband Daryl—one of the company’s subcontractors—through her work.

In 2001, a few years after her family sold the garbage company, Warden found herself taking a more active role in her community.

lacerville Recreation and Parks’ adult sports leagues strive to promote leisure time activity, which encourages fitness, healthy competition and fun for players and spectators alike. Current offerings include 3-on-3 basketball, 5-on-5 basketball, co-ed volleyball and softball leagues. Players form their own teams and are then placed in competitive divisions.

The deadline to register for adult softball is March 10. League games begin April 1 and take place Sunday through Friday at Lions Park; start dates may vary due to weather and field conditions. I

used to make fun of the gluten-free mayhem. Not of bona fide celiac sufferers, mind you, but of the general fe r vo r t h a t m o m e n t a r i l y jacked up the cost of rice cakes and branded itself on everything—even shampoo.

Fast forward one toddler later and pregnancy heartburn that never went away. Recently, I discovered that going glutenfree solved all of my problems, except that it took away the occasional pizza Friday or pancake Sunday. Well, now I’m grateful for the craze because I find that I’m accommodated pretty much everywhere—including Knuckle Dragger in Pollock Pines, which offers sandwiches and take-n-bake pizzas. My husband and I ordered his-and-hers pies (because this is what my life has become). I had The Mammoth: Canadian bacon, salami, pepperoni, sausage, olives, onions and fresh garlic. The gluten-free crust was piled so high with toppings that the dough seemed secondary and I felt like, yes, life would be okay. My husband attests that his crust was nice and thick and bready, with flecks of rosemary hidden away in every bite (trying not to cry). But ultimately, there’s no downside to take-n-bake—you get the affordability of frozen with the flavor of a Mom ‘n’ Pop. Can I use diesel engine oil in a petrol engine and vice versa?

A: Typically no, due to the different viscosity requirements of the different engine families. Diesel engines require heavier oil with certain additives that can withstand the wear that is associated with them. Most new gasoline engines don’t have the heavy use diesels do and require a much thinner oil to flow properly. If 15-40 diesel oil is used in an engine that requires 5-20 or 0-20 synthetic oil, engine damage can occur and/or engine systems that use oil pressure to operate will not operate correctly and can set off a check engine light. Always check the manufacturer’s requirement on which oil to use for your application.

Q: What’s the secret to achieving a light and crispy crust when battering and frying fish?

A:

For light and crispy fish and chips, follow the following steps: • Use sparkling water like Pellegrino to make the batter and add a little baking powder to the mixture.

• Dredge your piece of cod or haddock in flour.

• Make sure your batter is cold, then dip the fish and let the excess batter drip off (if you like your batter thicker, leave a little more on the fish). Carefully place fish in the oil.

• Make sure you use clean, fresh oil in your fryer; heat to a temperature of 350 degrees.

on’t miss a live, indoor concert performance by Briefcase Full of Blues on March 12. Purely authentic and the most realistic rendition of the legendary characters of Joliet Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd), this Blues Brothers tribute show brings back memories of the hit movie as they duplicate the music and fun of the original. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Cameron Park CSD office, Bel Air in Cameron Park, Cameron Park/ Shingle Springs Chamber of Commerce and online at showclix.com; or at the door.

The 33rd Annual Easter Egg H u n t , s p o n s o re d by t h e Cameron Park CSD, takes place Saturday, March 26, at Rasmussen Park.

Arrive at 10 a.m. to meet the Easter Bunny; at exactly 10:20 a.m. the big egg hunt (divided into age groups: 0-3, 4-5, 6-7 and 8-10) begins. At 11 a.m., there will be photo ops with the Easter Bunny, as well as face painting and a bounce house for a nominal fee. Admission is free.

Early bird combo passes to Cameron Park Lake and the Community Center Pool are on sale at a reduced price! Purchase a family pass for $129, an individual pass for $50 or a senior pass for $40.

March kicks off a new session of taekwondo classes for all ages.

Gymnastics and tumbling, including mini gym, trampoline and tumbling, StarLites, and StarBrites are also activities offered. If dance is more your style, try “Hula and Beyond Basic” for the youth, or “Nightclub Two-Step,” tango and hula for adults. Music lovers can try their hand at a basic guitar or classical guitar class.

The NFL-sponsored flag football program returns this spring for youth in grades 2-8. Get your friends together and sign up; deadline is March 18, and games start in April.

Mature adults can enjoy a variety of activities and programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 50+ Room at the Community Center, including bingo, Mexican train, Rummikub and a “Mandalas and Color” class. In addition, there’s “Tai Chi for Better Balance,” chair-based yoga and pickleball.

fine arts school in the pines A Creative Community Hub

S

urrounded by vibrant oil paintings, serene watercolors and surreal sculptures sit a cluster of desks set up with easels and paint palettes. A young girl bounces back to her painting in the corner, completing her final touches. Another couple sits while one paints and the other watches; only the soft swish of brush strokes against canvas can be heard in their interaction. Weaving throughout the room, the teacher roams—offering her guidance as each student works on their own masterpiece.

Fine Arts School in the Pines—a nonprofit founded in 2013 to foster the development and practice of creating art within El Dorado County—is run by gifted volunteers, all of whom offer insight into the fundamentals and advanced skills in genres of drawing, oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, pottery and sculpture. Nestled amongst the towering trees of Pollock Pines, the school’s location was chosen not only to serve the needs of the creative community, but also to inspire with its natural beauty.

“Art is an innate part of who we are as human beings, so it’s important to explore this part of yourself; in doing so, one achieves 16 styleedc.com - March 2016

a greater understanding of who they are… they see the complete, rounded person,” says Doug Pearson, founder and instructor.

With a style based in neuropsychology but adjusted to the arts, the school relies on practice, repetition and support, much like sports instruction. Pearson’s techniques allow both children and adults alike to advance quickly into creating brilliant artwork of their choosing. The school proudly showcases students’ stunning projects in their community gallery alongside pieces by other local artists.

Under the guidance of Colleen McCartin Florence, LMFT, the administrative/program director, the school offers free outreach programs for those who can benefit most from the powerful form of art therapy. “As with music, art is a way to connect to the right brain, where trauma memory and its emotions are stored. [Since] this part of the brain isn’t verbal, art provides a safe and supportive pathway to express and process repressed trauma, which can move a person to real healing,” McCartin Florence explains.

Those suffering from Alzheimer’s can express themselves in the school’s Creative Connections program, while veterans with

Marshall Hospital also refers patients with chronic disease or those dealing with grief and loss, while foster youth flourish with the connection between art and nature. “The community here is supportive and reflects the truth of who they are,” says McCartin Florence. “It encourages participants to move forward and maybe take that step they wouldn’t have taken otherwise.”

As with most nonprofits, the school relies heavily upon grant money and donations to operate; in fact, their main focus is to be owned and operated fully by the members of the community. “The ultimate goal of the ‘Give a High Five’ campaign is for the school to be 100-percent financially supported by the local community,” McCartin Florence says.

Excitedly rolling out blueprints, Pearson’s passion is evident with his plans to add music and sound rooms, more artistic space, and even a theater. With art programs continually being cut from public schools, it’s vital now to keep the artistic heart of our region beating fiercely. “If every household in El Dorado County gave just five dollars a year, we would be able to maintain and support the future development of nonprofit fine arts programs, including the building of an all-inclusive community fine arts center to provide classes and productions in art, music, dance and theater.”

kin cancer is on the rise. “It’s estimated that one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer over his or her lifetime. And one in 50 Americans will develop melanoma in their lifetime,” explains Dr. Aieska De Souza, MD, a dermatologist with Mercy Medical Group, a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation.

TYPES Dr. Scott Hearth, MD, a dermatologist at Granite Bay Dermatology and Laser Center, says melanoma is one of three types of skin cancer and typically the most aggressive, having the potential to spread at a much more rapid pace. “The rates of melanoma in the U.S. have doubled over the past 30 years,” he says.

Basal cell carcinoma is typically a slower growing type, “but if it’s not diagnosed in a timely manner, it can become locally destructive,” Hearth says. Squamous cell carcinoma has a similar behavior to basal cell carcinoma, but can progress at a quicker pace and has a higher rate of spread to lymph nodes and beyond.

DETECTION To aid in early detection, Hearth recommends that the average person, with no history of skin cancer, should have a skin check at least once a year. “A person with more than 25 moles has an increased risk 18 styleedc.com - March 2016

for developing melanoma, as do people with fair skin, and light hair and eye color,” he says.

Dr. David No, MD, Ph.D., a dermatologist at Dermatology Center of Northern California in Folsom, says concerning moles will exhibit one or more of these characteristics: A = Asymmetry: One half is unlike the other half B = Border: An irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border C = Color: Is varied from one area to another; has shades of tan, brown or black, or is sometimes white, red or blue D = Diameter: Melanomas are usually greater than 6 millimeters (the size of a pencil eraser) when diagnosed, but they can be smaller E = Evolving: A mole or skin lesion that looks different from the rest, or one that has changed in size, shape or color To detect skin cancer, providers will usually recommend a skin biopsy, which “is done by removing a small part of the skin so it can be examined. This takes about 10 minutes and is done in the office,” says Dr. David A. Berman, MD, medical director at Berman Skin Institute (offices in Roseville, Cameron Park and Placerville). Before the biopsy, the provider will numb the area of skin. There are different techniques to taking the sample based on the location, size and type of le-

sion. The tissue is examined under the microscope and results are often returned in a few days.

TREATMENT According to Berman, treating skin cancer varies depending on size, type, depth and location of the lesions; often, the lesion is surgically removed or destroyed with topical medications. Most treatments require local anesthesia and can be done in the office.

“Mohs micrographic surgery has the highest cure rate, and is done in the dermatologist’s office without any sedation,” he says.

PREVENTION To aid in prevention, avoid going outside between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when most UV exposure is high. “Moving your daily walk, jog or tennis match to outside of these times will greatly reduce your sun exposure,” Dr. No says. “Sunscreen must be reapplied every one to two hours to ensure adequate protection. It’s better to use two applications of SPF 30 (spaced two hours apart) than it is to use SPF 100 once.”

If you see something unusual, especially if it’s a dark or changing mole, get it checked. “Most melanomas are found by the patient, not by a doctor,” he says. “Like most medical problems, early detection and treatment are the keys to preventing serious or life-threatening cases.”

All added up, it’s a lot of time and money the sheriff’s office can devote to responding to calls for help and conducting investigations. Last year alone, S.T.A.R. volunteers provided more than 26,000 man-hours, saving the department more than $800,000. “This is an incredible example of teamwork,” says Sheriff Lieutenant Jim Byers. “The S.T.A.R. program has become a critical daily function of the [El Dorado County] Sheriff’s Office.”

S.T.A.R. volunteers don’t all have to go on patrol either; many assist with office duties, help with filing, sign off on “fix it tickets” and work at events.

When the program first launched it started with 25 volunteers and has grown steadily ever since. New volunteers are always welcome, and prior law enforcement experience is not compulsory—the only requirements are that volunteers must be at least 50 years of age and willing to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours a month.

former mortgage broker, Bill Wisdom now spends his days in crime prevention. He’s one of more than 100 volunteers in the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Team of Active Retirees (S.T.A.R.) program, which serves as an auxiliary arm of the sheriff’s office to help patrol the community, provide public assistance and keep neighborhoods safe.

“We don’t do actual law enforcement— that’s the job of the sheriff’s deputies, but we serve as additional eyes and ears for the sheriff’s office,” Wisdom says. “We patrol the community, provide a visible police presence, and if we see something that requires law enforcement intervention, we call it in.”

Launched in 1994, S.T.A.R. was modeled after similar programs around the country that have repeatedly shown the value they bring to communities, primarily in helping law enforcement agencies save money and be more efficient.

A typical day for a S.T.A.R. volunteer could involve several “vacation checks,” wherein homeowners have asked the sheriff’s office to check on their properties while they‘re away. While on patrol, volunteers also drive through school parking lots, patrol shopping areas of neighborhoods that have requested a more visible police presence, assist motorists, and provide traffic and crowd control for public events or emergency scenarios.

There is an application process after which candidates go through a background check. Once accepted, volunteers must go through a two-week S.T.A.R. training academy as well as a “citizens academy,” where they get instruction on radio codes, patrol procedures, traffic control, graffiti abatement, and sheriff’s office policy and procedures. The next academy starts in April, and anyone looking for a way to give back to the community is encouraged to apply.

“All of us are just so proud when we put that uniform on, and the level of respect and gratitude we get from the community for the work we do is immeasurable,” Wisdom says. “It’s amazing what you can get out of this program; you really are doing something great for the community.”

n late October 1855, people from all over El Dorado County and as far away as Sacramento streamed into Coloma, filling the hotels and crowding the restaurants. The Placerville Guard marched over from Hangtown to help keep order in the crowd, estimated at over 5,000—all gathered to witness the double hanging of Mickey Free and Jeremiah Crane.

The two condemned men were as different as night and day.

Free was a robber and serial killer who frequently patrolled the area between Clarksville and Coloma, making it a dangerous passage for unwary travelers; whereas Crane killed his sweetheart in a tragic attempt to unite he and his lover for eternity.

Born in Brockford, Canada, Free entered a life of crime at the age of 10, stealing two rabbits and spending 30 days in jail. This criminal behavior continued, and he eventually found it necessary to flee to Chicago where he made a living by robbing prostitutes. When he tired of Chicago, he tried his luck at the gaming tables on the steamboats along the Mississippi River. While gambling was not always fruitful, Free found targeting the gamblers and their marks to be very lucrative.

In 1853, he and four companions arrived in Mud Springs (El Dorado) and set up a mining operation. Their success was moderate, so when a man named Dickson offered to lead Free and his companions to a rich strike high in the mountains, they jumped at the opportunity. Unfortunately, the strike didn’t pan out and Free and his associates hanged Dickson.

Free then spent time in Sacramento, again preying on prostitutes. When he returned to Mud Springs, he brought two new partners with him. The trio soon found that robbing Chinese miners was very profitable; by his own admission, Free robbed and murdered 13 of them. He said he regretted killing the 13th “Chinaman,” as that was an unlucky number, and should have waited for another to come along to make it an even 14.

Free, however, was not arrested for killing Chinese miners, but for the murder of three traders at Slippery Ford, high in the Sierra Nevada. After his capture, he provided a detailed account of the robbery and murders— leaving no doubt that he was a ruthless killer.

The law finally caught up with Free and his gang in Uniontown, which was located on Martinez Creek about two miles southeast of Mud Springs. Free was returned to Coloma (then the county seat of El Dorado County) to stand trial for the murder of the traders. One of his partners turned state’s evidence, helping the prosecution convict him. Free was sentenced to death and scheduled to hang alongside Jeremiah Crane.

On the day of the hanging, Crane read a statement and sang a song of his own composition, stood by eating peanuts and, by some accounts, danced a jig on the trap door of the gallows. His reported last words were spoken to the sheriff after the hood was placed over his head.

“Now, boys,” he said, “see that this is done up right.”

At 1:40 p.m. on October 26, 1855, it was “done up right,” and so ended the murderous rampage of Mickey Free.

For some sustenance, the Ahi Niçoise Salad fits the bill every time. Fresh, seared tuna sits over mixed greens studded with fried capers, new potatoes, hard-boiled egg, string beans and tomatoes. A day of wine tasting in Amador County should always include a visit to the always fresh, always flavorful, Amador Vintage Market. My go-to order is the Miner’s Reuben— grilled focaccia bread (the freshest I’ve ever tasted) piled high with shaved beef pastrami, pepper jack cheese, bread-andbutter-pickled onions (made in house) and grain mustard.

Eaten with their house-made potato chips, it’s everything a lunch should be—comforting, filling and tasty—plus more. If time is of the essence, they have an online ordering form, but the establishment is so charming you might just want to stay awhile. $7.95, amadorvintagemarket.com I don’t think people know how lucky we are to have Pupusas in Cameron Park. The quickest way to describe the Salvadorean delight to call it a meat-and-cheesestuffed corn tortilla—thick but still flat.

The Landy Pizza at Umi Sushi fuses my two favorite foods—pizza and sushi—into one mouthwatering meal. Atop a large, crispy “chip” (sliced into individual pieces), you’ll find spicy tuna, zingy lemon, jalapeño, avocado, masago, eel sauce and spicy mayo. Named after the owner’s wife, this handson, chopsticks-free creation is equal parts pretty as it is palatable. $12.50, umisushiedh.com

lamb, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, green beans, pearl onions, balsamic reduction, rosemary and mint come together beneath a flaky crust. This seemingly newfangled joint has been around since the nineties and, based on the steady stream of patrons, is here to stay. $8.85, z-pie.com The folks at The Farm Table know their meats, so when Pork Belly is on their menu, it’s always my first choice.

The chef braises the pasture-raised pork until it reaches fall-apart tenderness and richness under the crispy pork belly skin.

Close your eyes to savor the first bite, but don’t forget the included sides of creamy Potato-Parsnip Gratin and sautéed Winter Greens. $22, ourfarmtable.com After a day of wine tasting, there’s nothing I’d rather eat than the Risotto Carciofo at Gold Vine Grill in Somerset. The namesake carciofo, which translates to artichoke, is the dish’s star, with plenty of the meaty vegetables dotted throughout.

Earthy mushrooms and tender chicken also make an appearance in the warm, elegant comfort food favorite. $17.95, goldvinegrill.com

Sweetie Pie’s has been on the map for some time now, and their Ollalieberry Pie is always one of the most talked-about dishes. A cross between a loganberry (mix of blackberry and raspberry) and a youngberry (mix of blackberry and dewberry), the purple-hued fruit tastes like nectar. Found in multiple offerings at the establishment (pancakes, jam, etc.), my eye is always on the pie. A buttery, flakey crust serves as the perfect vessel for the filling, while a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream ties the dessert (or breakfast…I’m not judging) together in perfect pie harmony. $4.99 (slice), $1.25 extra for a la mode, $16.99 (whole pie), sweetiepies.biz

As a self-proclaimed vodka sauce connoisseur, I can confidently say that Papa Gianni’s Ristorante makes one of the best. Rich in seasoning, the balance of cream to tomato to vodka is spot on; it’s like liquid gold. I could honestly eat it by the spoonful and be satisfied, but it’s even better ladled into the house-made penne found in their Pasta alla Vodka. Now that’s amore! $14.50, papagiannis.net Good sandwiches are few and far between, but the Hang Loose at Mr. Pickles is one of my favorites. The marriage of hot pastrami, bacon, cream cheese and avocado is one that my taste buds will never fall out of love with. Crunchy, creamy, meaty and filling, you’ll need to tuck your napkin into your collar for this one: It’s going to get messy. $8.49, mrpickles.com The first time I tasted brie, my eyes went wide, my stomach smiled and I seriously (almost) ate the entire wheel; so when I spotted a Baked Brie Bruschetta on Snooty Frog’s menu recently, I knew I had to indulge.

Toasted bread is served alongside the creamy cheese, apricot preserves and walnuts. Sweet, salty and crunchy, it hits every flavor and texture note in perfect harmony. $8.95, snootyfrog.com Even though I’m on the “see food” diet, I do love a good seafood dish and the Pan Roasted Halibut from Henry’s Steakhouse is one of the better fish offerings out there. The fresh, firm and delicate-tasting halibut is given a light char before being ladled with a wineherb reduction. The microbrewery’s new partnership with Kuru Sushi and Poke Bar is one that I hope lasts a lifetime. Pick your protein (tuna, salmon, shrimp or tofu) and sauce (sesame, soy, ponzu or spicy pepperfin) and let the cooks work their magic. You can even add in additional toppings for an extra chunk of change. $8.95 (small poke), $12.95 (large poke), $5 (pint), cbwbeer.com On a chilly evening, nothing is better than takeout with a side of Netflix. The Pad Thai at Thai Unique is scrumptious both dining in and taken to-go, as they package their silky rice noodles in foil to keep them moist, along with fresh lime, chopped peanuts and crunchy bean sprouts to mix once you get home. (served with buttermilk ranch that’s good enough to eat by the spoonful) are perhaps even a smidgen better than their already delicious French fries. Generous, freshly cut slabs of sweet potato create a savory, satisfying treat, as a side or all on their own. Paired with the namesake Brickface cocktail—which is a tasty blend of Jack Single Barrel, amaretto, orange curacao, SoCo and lime—is the recipe for a fun, albeit drunken, night. $6.95 (planks), $10 (cocktail), bricksonmainstreet.com For lunch, you can’t beat the Beef and Bleu Sandwich from Two Cooks on Main, an eatery that reminds me of walking into Gram’s house. Upon biting into the grilled roll that’s smeared with just-enough mayo, you’ll be greeted with crisp green leaf lettuce, roast beef, roasted garlic and pungent blue cheese. It’s a combo of flavors that works in all kinds of amazing ways. Plus, the sub is served with chips and—to clean your palate—an orange slice. Paying homage to the region, the friendly folks at Shilla Teriyaki & Sushi Bar have a special (and rather mouthwatering) roll on their menu: the Apple Hill. Filled with deep-fried shrimp and crabmeat, the exterior is topped with scallops, avocado and special sauce. portion and plenty of down-home flavors. You are at higher risk for Type 2 diabetes if you: • Are older • Are obese • Don’t get much exercise • Have a family history of diabetes • Have prediabetes or had gestational diabetes “It’s important to be screened annually for diabetes, especially if you have risk factors,” says Marshall Family Nurse Practitioner Jaya George. “Diabetes is a slow killer if left untreated.”

The good news: “You can take steps to prevent or control the disease before it becomes a problem,” she says.

Eating a healthy diet and being more physically active encourages weight loss and reduces your risks. Jaya recommends people eat a low fat, high

fiber diet rich in fruit and vegetables, enjoy small portions of lean proteins, and limit carbohydrates because they have the biggest effect on your blood glucose levels.

“Exercise has many benefits beyond controlling diabetes,” she adds.

Marshall Medical Center’s Pulmonary Care and Critical Care services are ranked among the top 10% in the nation in 2016, according to Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed healthcare decisions. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

Marshall Medical Center is one of three hospitals in the Sacramento region* to receive both of these quality achievements.

Marshall received the Quality Achievement for Overall Pulmonary Services two years in a row. The award for Critical Care services has been given to the hospital for four years, since 2013.

Marshall also received 5 stars for the quality of its care in six clinical areas from Healthgrades.

• It achieved 5 stars for Treatment of Heart Attacks in 2016 and the Treatment of Heart Failure for the years 2015 and 2016.

arshall’s Junior Volunteers, a talented team of high school students, work diligently to provide service to our hospital staff, patients and community.

Volunteers work at the hospital and other offices, and attend Marshall-sponsored functions. Sometimes, they don the Marshall Mouse mascot costume and energetically share high-fives and hugs at community events.

On a cold November night, Hannah Fiterre was leaving a football game at Union Mine High School in El Dorado when she saw a man, Ken Scanavino, collapsed in the parking lot. Hannah jumped into action and began administering CPR until help came from another bystander, Mary Garecht. Together they performed CPR and chest compressions until paramedics arrived. |

The prompt action of these two women saved Ken’s life. Thankfully, Ken has recovered after a lengthy hospital stay and the three of them have become friends.

Community Grants Provide Hope When our community members experience life traumas, the way to demonstrate compassion is by helping to provide resources for hope. Every year, Marshall Foundation assists Marshall Medical Center and the healthcare community by providing grants for essential needs.

Some of the most urgent needs in our community include preventive health and mental health services, especially for those with low incomes.

Typically, students enroll in the program during high school and volunteer through graduation.

After a rigorous training process, they’re encouraged to try multiple departments, community events, and act as Marshall Mouse to broaden their experience.

Marshall Foundation recently awarded community health grants for projects at these worthy organizations:

Upon graduation, students are invited to apply for the Junior Volunteer Excellent Service Scholarship, which offers rewards up to $500 or sometimes more, based on the student’s accomplishments within the program.

$5,000 – Helps expand professional mental health treatment for PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and accompanying issues, often suffered as a result of domestic violence. $5,000 – Establishes curriculum and instructor training to help those who have been physically, emotionally, sexually or financially abused with skills in self-advocacy and empowerment.

Bipolar Insights

$4,000 – Expands the program’s visibility and involves more people with the organization and educational groups. Helps develop classes and provides scholarships for low income individuals to attend.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

$5,000 – Helps address mental health needs before they become severe and disabling. The program is designed to provide early intervention to the youngest children (ages 3-5) in the Head Start/State Preschool programs.

Bridging the Gap for Those in Crisis philanthropic tradition until his death in 2009.

Last December, as Foundation staff began preparing to help those in need during the holidays, Executive Director Karen Good found great joy in the task. When the Foundation adopted a needy family, her heart overflowed with compassion.

As Karen pondered the reasons why, she soon recalled the wintry Wyoming story — for it was her mother who never let her forget the kindness of the nonprofit. The woman’s example is carried on in the good work the Foundation does for its community. It’s the reason Karen believes so genuinely in its mission. It’s all so personal!

Marshall’s Bridging the Gap fund, designed to assist those in crisis, is an essential resource for Marshall’s patients and employees. Recent requests included assistance for prescriptions, housing, food, transportation, utility bills and other needs.

t was December 18, 1936 in Casper, Wyoming. As the snow began to fall, two men drove along a winding, mountain road. Both had large families. In order to survive, rabbit hunting was a frequent occurrence — and so was drinking. This day, the trip ended tragically when their car crashed, killing one of the men. It devastated his many children and wife. How would this family survive when they could barely get by?

A local nonprofit organization stepped in to assist the family, making a sorrowful Christmas celebration a bit brighter for the family.

One of the daughters in this family never forgot the kindness and often shared the story with her own daughter. She made it a point to send annual donations to the charity. After she died, her husband (who lived in Placerville) continued his wife’s |

Marshall patient Valerie Winters expressed her gratitude in writing when the fund provided her with a much-needed knee walker. The scooter-like transportation plays an important role in the long-term treatment of a wound on the bottom of her foot by keeping pressure off of the wound. “We tried several avenues to procure a knee walker, to no avail,” she said. “I have been dealing with this wound for over six months. The knee walker allows me to keep the pressure off the wound, allowing it to heal.”

Marshall employees support our community’s health with the 1+1 = 11 Campaign.

Employees at Marshall Medical Center are helping our community with the 1 + 1 = 11 Campaign, which encourages individuals to make a one-year pledge that supports 11 local nonprofits. With a goal of $110,000 within reach, this equation has been multiplied over and over since the campaign launched last fall.

Employee gifts support local

agencies like Mother Lode Rehabilitation Enterprises (MORE), which helps empower people with disabilities. Susie Davies, MORE’s Executive Director, said it was only 60 years ago that people like those served by MORE were institutionalized. Because many in society believed that they were unable to learn, they were often locked away and left to live without hope or dreams.

“My sister was bullied and teased throughout high school as a person with a developmental disability, and to this day those memories haunt her,” related Janet Osterdock of El Dorado Hills.

The generosity of Marshall employees, and the work of the agencies they support, help to make a difference every day.

apa Gianni’s is a Cameron Park staple. For two decades, the family-owned eatery has been serving traditional, scratch-made recipes from Southern Italy, including favorites like chicken Parmesan and gnocchi alla vodka.

Topped with a carefully chosen wine list and out-of-this-world desserts, it’s the ideal destination to celebrate a special occasion or grab weeknight takeout.

It was raining cats and dogs on the Sunday evening my husband and I stopped by for dinner, but even with a packed house, the hosts were friendly, and the servers fast and enthusiastic. For starters, we opted for the Sausage and Peppers, which featured spicy Italian sausage, thinly sliced seasoned potatoes and

sautéed-to-perfection green peppers that warmed the very cockles of our hearts.

My husband’s lasagna was cooked perfectly—thick, al dente noodles were layered with ricotta, mozzarella, lashings of brightly flavored tomato sauce and Italian sausage. boasted plenty of succulent mushrooms and artichoke hearts. Served alongside a heaping pile of penne marinara, I’d never seen so much deliciousness. My husband’s lasagna was cooked perfectly—thick, al dente noodles were layered with ricotta, mozzarella, lashings of brightly flavored tomato sauce and Italian sausage. The portions were beyond generous, too—so generous in fact that they should register as non-profit organizations.

I had kept my dessert stomach on standby for an order of cannoli. Alas, cannoli was temporarily unavailable for the evening. Rather than flip the table in protest (I do love my cannoli), I was swayed by a delicious piece of tiramisu instead.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?

My first job was as a waitress. It taught me that customer service is number one. You should always be ahead of the game. Know what your customers want and always have a smile on your face…no matter what!

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

I teach seventh grade science at Rolling Hills Middle School and believe that being active with our youth is very important. I also support local school groups with donations.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

My staff is the friendliest; they’re always greeting customers with a smile and a cup of coffee or tea. They’re attentive, but also know when to let the customer enjoy their visit without bothering them. Our staff makes sure customers feels like family when they walk through our doors.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?

My two daughters, two sons, granddaughter and grandson.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

If I feel I need to take a deep breath and relax, I go to church, the beach, or my summer home in Oregon.

What’s your favorite local event that you go to?

Watching sporting events at Ponderosa High School.

What’s your favorite local business other than your own?

Mirror Mirror Fashion—the owner is always willing to help me with my business needs and has become a close friend over the past two years.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

In 2009, I returned to the family business to operate Party Royal; in 2013, I moved the business to a new, much larger location where—in addition to table and chair rentals—it grew to a full-service event company.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?

My first job was packing bell peppers in the fields of Merced County for a family member. I worked there from ages 14-17 and learned that the challenges of hard work are rewarding.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

I grew up in Shingle Springs, Placerville, Camino and Cameron Park, so El Dorado County is home to me. I support many local charitable organizations and shop at local, small businesses whenever possible.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

We care. Our goal is to provide the best customer service possible by offering free consultations and seven-days-a-week availability to assist with and plan our client’s special events. We are more than a rental store—we offer referrals and resources to help make planning events a breeze.

What’s your hidden talent?

I cook Mexican food from scratch. Every year on Cinco de Mayo, I have an event where I prepare my favorite dishes for guests. I’m a pretty good baker, too.

What’s your biggest job perk?

Being able to provide equipment for Lilliput Children’s Services’ annual Christmas party for their children and families. I’ve also enjoyed cooking for the event.

And finally, customer service is…?

Exerting every effort to meet the needs of each individual customer by easing their stress, building their confidence, educating them, and offering support in order to provide the best experience possible.

t was my family’s idea to spend a week in New York City. It’ll be fun. We’ll see so much. I’m not much into big cities but I figured, OK. Did you know there are an estimated 13,000 licensed yellow cabs on the streets of New York? There is also over 600 miles of subway track. True. So of course, while we were there, we barely used either. Instead, we walked.

Good Lord, did we walk.

I’m not opposed to walking. I’m actually a fan. Walking is healthy.

Or, “We’re going to Lower Manhattan today!”

“Um, it looks like we could catch the A, C or E on 50th. Or, the 1, 2 or 3 on 34th. Wait, maybe we take the B, D, F or M…” “We’ll walk.”

“But it’s 25 blocks.”

“It’s just easier.”

So we did. From our Mid-Manhattan hotel

to (and all through) Central Park, Lower Manhattan, Upper Manhattan, the East Side, the West Side. We hit Times Square of course, the city library, Natural History Museum, 30 Rock, Broadway, the Empire State Building, Wall Street, Grand Central Station, 5th Avenue, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, and a couple places I’m pretty sure were featured in the opening scenes of Welcome Back, Kotter. We would’ve walked to Staten Island if there hadn’t been a bay in the way.

Our kids actually handled all the walking surprisingly well. But then again, they’re young and their vertebrae haven’t yet begun collapsing into each other. My wife did too, maybe because most of the time she was the one saying: “It’s just easier.”

Me, on the other hand…? I don’t want to say I was whiny because that doesn’t bode well for a 52-year-old grown-damn man. So, instead I’ll just say, I “voiced my concern”—concern that all this walking could wear our feet down to nubs; concern that our hearing would be permanently damaged by all of the honking taxis (many of them empty, by the way, and going our direction); concern that we were missing some of the unique New York...character... that can only be found on the sticky floors of subway platforms.

And to be fair, we did catch the subway a couple of times. Once, to Brooklyn, where we got off at the wrong stop and ended up having to—you guessed it— walk some 20 blocks to a restaurant that turned out to be closed. (Call ahead to make sure they’re open? Fuggaboutit.)

And, another time while we were waiting on a platform, we got to see a rat get electrocuted by the third rail—wouldn’t have seen that walking.

I get to plan our next Christmas vacation and I already have it settled: a cabin up in Truckee. With a little luck we’ll get snowed in and have to play board games all day.

We’ll sip hot chocolate by a warm fire and find our way to the slopes for some skiing.

And if my family asks why we aren’t doing something more exciting, like maybe a week in San Francisco? Yes, I already have my reply: “It’s just easier.”
