his month is one of my favorites— there are so many good things to celebrate.

For one, we welcome spring on March 20 and look forward to longer days, greener pastures (get your gardening gloves on!) and, of course, St. Patty’s Day (a good excuse to pour a few pints with friends). Secondly, there’s NCAA March Madness starting March 17 (anToo much other good excuse to pour pints…), and of a good thirdly, but certainly thing can be not lastly, we at wonderful.

Dorado Arts Council (eldoradoartscouncil. org), and Jensen couldn’t resist. “I’ve always felt that the arts are an essential piece of a vibrant community,” she explains. “People are a product of where they live, and the arts are a reflection of that.” Soon after, she became the council’s executive director, and while she’s stepping down later this year in order to pursue her interest in creative writing, she’s proud of what she’s been able to achieve during her time with the organization.

“It is one of the most satisfying experiences on earth to work at doing something important for your community,” she says, adding with a laugh, “If we ever had a week where all the nonprofits took a vacation at the same time, it would be a very dismal place around here.”

ebra Jensen still remembers the day she saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time. She was just 10 years old when her family moved from the Midwest, and the beauty and grandeur of the California coast was awe-inspiring.

“We all cried,” Jensen shares regarding their first viewing. “We just stood there.”

A lifelong nature lover, Jensen eventually pursued a degree in environmental studies and ecology, and went on to work for numerous environmentally focused nonprofits, including the American River Conservancy. She and her husband, Jeff, have lived in the Placerville region for over 25 years, and both their children (now adults) work for conservation organizations. ith a cozy atmosphere, endless menu options and a convenient location, Milano Pizza reminds me of the true value of good, handcrafted pizza. On my last visit, I went with their specialty pie, the Milano Combo, and quickly discovered why it’s so special. Topped with six kinds of meat (ham, salami, pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground beef and linguica), a whole lot of crunchy veggies (black olives, green peppers, red onions and mushrooms) and a blend of hearty cheeses, this pizza came up from behind and spun my taste buds around 180 degrees. of ingredients (just looking at all that meat would give anyone heartburn!), it somehow was not greasy or heavy at all. In other words, I enjoyed all of the savory, pizza goodness without going into that uncomfortable food coma later. And, unlike a lot of fast-food pizza places, Milano doesn’t compensate for poor ingredients with oodles of sauce; it emphasizes the flavor and quality of their toppings by having them stand alone—making this place a stand-alone option if you’re looking for a fantastic slice of pizza. Q: What are some things I can do to avoid cooking a dry burger?

A: The best way to avoid overcooking a burger is to always make sure you’re using good quality beef; hand-making patties will almost always give you a better product than store bought, processed patties. The next important element is a nice, hot grill. Then, make sure you allow the burger to cook well on both sides, and never—I repeat, never—press down on it to make it cook faster. This forces out all of the wonderful natural juices and flavor, and you want to keep as much of that in your burgers as possible. And, just like a fine steak, make sure to let the burger rest before you add cheese or condiments.

the10 spot ST. PATRICK’S DAY COCKTAILS To ensure a shamrockin’ good time at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day soiree, stray away from the green beer and mix up one of the 10 libations below.

1. Leaping Leprechaun.

1 part Sauza Blue Silver 100% Agave Tequila, 1/2 part DeKuyper Sour Apple Pucker, 2 parts frozen limeade, 2 parts apple juice, sliced apples. Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass; garnish with apples.

2. Irish Milk and Honey. 1 oz.

Baileys Vanilla Cinnamon, 1/2 oz.

Bushmills Irish Whiskey, honey, whipped cream. Shake Baileys and Bushmills with ice and strain into a shot glass rimmed with honey. Top with whipped cream.

3. Shamrock Shake. 2 oz. Hypnotiq, 1 oz. vodka, .5 oz. orange juice, fresh lime juice.

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass.

4. Emerald Isle. 2.5 oz. gin, .5 oz. crème de menthe, 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

5. Baileys Irish Float. 2 oz. Baileys Original Irish Cream, 1 oz. Bushmills Irish Whiskey, 1 oz. Coca-Cola, 1 oz. espresso. Mix Coca-Cola and espresso together; put to side. Shake Baileys, Bushmills and Coca-Cola/ espresso mixture with ice and pour into an old-fashioned glass.

6. Green Thing. 1 part Sauza Blue Silver 100% Agave Tequila, 2.5 parts club soda, 1 part fresh lime juice, 1 bunch fresh mint, 1 part sugar.

Muddle mint leaves, sugar and lime juice. Add ice and tequila. Top with soda; garnish with a mint sprig and lime wedge.

7. Irish Flag. Créme de menthe, Baileys Original Irish Cream, Grand Marnier. Layer ingredients into a shot glass, in the order listed above.

8. Lucky Rita. 1 part Sauza Blue Silver 100% Agave Tequila, 1/2 part DeKuyper Melon Liqueur, 2 parts limeade, sugar. Shake and strain into a sugar-rimmed glass filled with ice.

9. Over the Rainbow. 3/4 oz. Midori, 2 oz. citrus vodka, white cranberry juice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.

10. Irish Julep. 2 oz. Basil Hayden’s Bourbon, 1/2 oz. créme de menthe, 1 oz. half and half, mint sprig. Pour ingredients into a highball glass filled with ice; garnish with a mint sprig.

Fling Into Spring

A

re you planning a wedding? Don’t miss It’s a Wedding Affair on March 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., a free wedding event for brides and grooms, plus their family and friends.

On March 28, The Random Strangers—a group of seasoned pros hailing from Placerville with years of experience, strong vocal harmonies and instrumental chops—will perform at the Cameron Park Community Center. The rockin’ Americana music starts at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.). To purchase tickets ($10 each or two for $18), head to the CSD Office, Cameron Park/Shingle Springs Chamber Office, Walgreens and Bel Air in Cameron Park, or visit showclix.com; also available at the door for $12 each.

March also kicks off a new session of Taekwondo classes for all ages. Your own Taekwondo uniform is included free with each class. Junior and adult golf classes will also be offered at Bass Lake Golf Course, and the NFL-sponsored flag football program (open to grades 2-8) returns this spring, too! Deadline to register is March 13, and games start in April.

If dance is more your style, sign the kids up for Hula and Beyond or Basic Hula; adults can try a belly dance or rumba/bolero class, among others. Music lovers can practice their strumming at a ukulele or guitar class. With the warmer weather approaching, a gardening class—offered by instructors from El Dorado Nursery—might be a wise choice.

After working up an appetite, join one of the many cooking classes, from Chocolate Truffles and Making Yeast Dough to Thai Cooking and Cooking with Kids. A variety of theater classes are also available, including musical theater or improv.

Mature adults won’t want to miss the activities (including bingo, Scrabble, Mexican train, etc.) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 50+ Room. On March 24, a short story discussion at 2 p.m. on A Pair of Silk Stockings by Kate Chopin will take place.

And on March 26, don’t miss the speaker series at 1 p.m. In addition to these happenings, Tai Chi for Better Balance and pickleball are also available for participation.

Raising a Team Player

t doesn’t start with how loud you cheer or how big their names and jersey numbers are when you place them proudly onto the windows of your SUV. It isn’t the gear—not the glove, the cleats, the $200 carbon fiber sunglasses, or the $500 dollar bat made with bits of actual metal from Babe Ruth’s spikes. It isn’t the league, the team or the neighborhood you come from. It isn’t private instruction or expensive skills camps. It isn’t evil eye necklaces, lambskin batting gloves or endless bags of ranch-flavored sunflower seeds.

It doesn’t matter how fast a kid runs, how far they throw or how hard they hit. It doesn’t matter if they bat first or fourth or last, if they’re shortstop, starting pitcher or right field. It matters not one bit if they play all game, every game or the minimum two-innings/one at-bat. It doesn’t matter 12 styleedc.com - March 2015

if they’re an all-star or an also-ran, if they make the game winning catch or hit the walk-off home run. It doesn’t matter how many times they’ve seen The Sandlot.

Your dreams for them of a scholarship— or, let’s just be honest, a lengthy career in the major leagues? None of it makes any difference.

What does?

It matters that their hat is on straight, pants are zipped and they didn’t forget their mitt. It matters that they show up— to practices, as well as games—and take the field, regardless of whether they’re a 12-year-old vacuum cleaner at third or a clover-picker doing the pee-pee dance in right field.

All that other stuff...none of it matters.

These are the things that do. Because how they are as a player is a good indication of how they’ll be as a person. And who they are as a person will matter far more than how they ever were as a player.

And all of that? All of that starts with you.

What matters is how they are as an opponent. Do they play with class and purpose? Play hard but fair? Are they confident but not cocky? Do they win with grace, or lose with dignity? And, win or lose, do they go through the handshake line repeating “good game” and meaning it every single time?

What matters is how they react when an umpire makes the worst call in the world. Do they glare and whine, throw their helmet and slam their bat to the ground; or bite their lip and respect the call—even if the man on the moon could see that it was a ball?

Do they respect the coaches? Do they listen and try and hustle? Do their time on the pine without pouting? Do a lap without question when the coach catches them not paying attention at practice? Do they get the message that the lap was supposed to send?

Most of all, what matters is how they are as a teammate. It’s easy to praise the star— to share a laugh with the kid who went yard last inning. But how do they treat the kid at the end of the bench...the one who just muffed a grounder that allowed two runs to score? Do they encourage, or discourage? More importantly, how do they treat the teammate who muffs more than they ever scoop up, who runs like they’re dragging an anchor, who throws like they’ve never played catch with their dad because, well, maybe they don’t have a dad? Most importantly, how do they treat that bench kid who finds himself or herself at bat at the end of the game with two outs, down one and the tying run on third, and instead of knocking in the tying run, they strike out?

david soares A Glass Act

eing a glassblower was not something David Soares envisioned for himself while earning his wildlife degree from Humboldt State 32 years ago. Once introduced to the art, however, he became hooked; when and wherever he could find a glass studio to work in, he would perfect his skill. It was the clean mountain air, towering trees and abundant animal life that brought Soares and his wife to their new home in Pollock Pines, where his company Glassasoares has fully evolved. Now that he’s planted roots, Soares is busy exploring new venues to showcase his glass menagerie.

HLB: Why glass?

DS: Glass working has greatly enhanced my ability in color selection and association, especially blowing, which allows you to combine and overlay, and fuse colors together in a liquid state. I’m attracted to the versatility of glass and the possibilities of a piece— 18 styleedc.com - March 2015

from the purely visual to the more functional. You think you know what the result will be, but many times there are effects that are wonderful surprises.

HLB: How long does a piece take to create?

DS: It varies by size and style. Small, solid pieces formed in a mold with little color can be put away in less than 10 minutes. Larger pieces that require several assistants can take up to an hour, or longer. Most people are unaware that it takes two to three days just to bring the furnace of clear glass up to working temperature, and then after a piece is finished, it takes time to cool (anneal), which factors into the cost.

HLB: How did you come up with the name “Glassasoares” for your business?

DS: As a child (or adult-child) I was, and still am, fascinated by the size and diversity of dinosaurs. How could they just disappear? I had as many plastic toy replicas as my parents could get me, so when it came time to pick a business name, my passion for glass and dinosaurs—along with the similarity to my sir name Soares—led to Glassasoares.

HLB: Who’s had the biggest influence on your art?

DS: I would say my parents—they saw the potential and encouraged me whenever they could. My father was a great artist himself. Another would be my high school art teacher who introduced me to many types of media and techniques, while also allowing the students to express themselves. Most of all, he showed me that art could, and should, be fun and fulfilling.

HLB: What inspires you?

DS: As a Christian, my inspiration comes from God. [When it comes to] my art, however, nature is my main source of inspiration—especially sea life.

HLB: What can we expect from you in the future?

DS: I will continue learning and refining my skill as a glass artist—doing what I love to do. I also want to make the studio more energy-efficient and cost-effective. Many artists have a “signature” piece or style, but I’m still working on mine.

would have introduced you,” my friend told me after greeting an acquaintance recently, “but I couldn’t remember her name.” Then, laughing, she added: “I’ve known her for years. I must be getting Alzheimer’s.” We’ve all had similar experiences and jest about getting older, but privately wonder: Are we OK? According to four local experts, the answer is a nonreassuring “maybe.”

The number one cause of memory loss, by far, is aging. Brain scans clearly show that as we grow older we lose brain cells. “Nearly everyone loses some memory with age,” says John Schafer, MD, and a neurologist with Mercy Medical Group. “Brains shrink as we grow older.” In our 80s and 90s, a chilling 30-40 percent of us will have Alzheimer’s disease—the most common and most dreaded form of dementia, in which brain cells die off rapidly.

So, when do we worry? “Forgetting names or even having trouble recalling words is pretty common,” says Shawn Kile, MD, and a neurologist with the Sutter Neuroscience Institute Memory Clinic. “It becomes worrisome when memory loss grows progressively worse or other cognitive functions (such as reasoning and language) become

classroom commotion Common Core State Standards

E

ducation has come a long way since the three R’s—reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic. Today, schools are teaching core subjects with a new set of standards called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Approved in 2012 by the California Department of Education, the new standards are being implemented in English and math for approximately 6.2 million students in grades K-12 throughout the state.

To date, 44 states have adopted the CCSS. Having the same standards benefits students nationwide, by offering a consistent education—even if they change schools or move to a different state.

Educators agree that the new standards provide a practical way to prepare children for life’s challenges by learning the real-world skills they will need, step-by-step.

“What we’re trying to achieve with the Common Core is to help students do more than simply memorize facts,” says Giorgos Kazanis, public information officer with the California Department of Education. “We want them to engage, to think critically and

to solve problems.” The Common Core was designed to retain the best content from previous standards and replace outdated ways of learning. “The new standards provide teachers the time to teach them well,” Kazanis explains, “[which] takes a different kind of teaching than the scripted lessons, the routine question-and-response we saw with the old standards.”

Schools and teachers are taking on the Common Core standards with determination. Dave Scroggins, director of curriculum and instruction for the Rescue Union School District, says he feels that the new standards are better overall.

“A variety of academic skills are emphasized, such as the ability to locate and cite evidence in different forms of text,” he explains. “The ability to think critically and explain or justify that thinking to others, as well as perseverance in solving challenging mathematical problems [are other] skills called to the forefront.”

The Rescue Union School District, like many districts, has spent time training its teachers on the CCSS content and expecta-

tions. “Early-release Mondays are used to provide staff development around the Common Core,” Scroggins says. “Several of our teachers have [even] received additional training and currently serve as Common Core expert teachers for the El Dorado County Office of Education.”

Parents, however, have not readily welcomed the Common Core, due to its radically different approach, and voice frustration in trying to help their grade-school-age kids with math homework. They say that with the new conceptual math—not just learning that two plus two equals four, but how the numbers actually relate to each other—simple arithmetic has become as complicated as calculus. Many school districts are making an effort to communicate more with parents, such as offering workshops for them to learn the new math alongside their children.

Kazanis says that on the whole, the implementation has been successful so far.

“The feedback we have received has been largely positive,” he reports. “That’s not to say we haven’t encountered challenges along the way, but that’s to be expected from a change affecting more than six million students statewide.”

wen Provencher was just two weeks old when routine newborn screening revealed he had cystic fibrosis (CF), a life-threatening genetic disorder that affects one in 3,200 Caucasian babies. Currently, there is no cure for CF, which causes cells that produce bodily fluids to become thick and sticky, severely damaging the lungs and pancreas.

Owen, now six, manages his disease with the help of medication, daily treatments, family support and hockey. The lifelong Red Wings fan always dreamed of hitting the ice with his favorite team, and in October 2014 that dream finally came true. With the help of the Make-A-Wish Northeastern California and Northern Nevada (NECANNV), Owen and his parents flew to Detroit for a day of skating with his idol: goalie Jimmy Howard.

that are out of our control, even when we’re following all the right steps. The trip was an opportunity to get away, a break from reality. It was a great spiritual lift for our family,” Owen’s mother, Heidi, explains. “It is hard to put into words how much [it] meant to us.”

For more than 30 years, Make-A-Wish Foundation has brought hope to children facing life-threatening medical conditions nationwide. Headquartered in Arizona, the nonprofit was inspired by Chris Greicius, a seven-year-old from Phoenix who wanted to become a police officer. Just days before his death from leukemia in 1980, Chris’ wish was granted with the help of his community. Decades later, more than a quarterof-a-million children have followed in Chris’ footsteps to become public safety officers, superheroes, musicians, athletes and so much more—if only for one carefree day.

“A common misconception of Make-AWish is that all the kids we serve are terminally ill,” shares Joanie Johnston, senior

director of mission delivery at Make-A-Wish Northeastern California and Northern Nevada. “While some of the kids lose their fight, a vast majority of our wish children go on with their lives! I want families to think of Make-A-Wish as one of the building blocks that can help their child move forward in the journey.”

Make-A-Wish Northeastern California and Northern Nevada is one of the organization’s oldest chapters. Founded in 1983 by local businessman Frank Ramos, it has served more than 5,000 children throughout 37 counties and is home to the Wishing Place, a state-of-the-art facility where one wish is granted every business day.

“Recent national ‘impact studies’ have provided statistics in the 81-99-percent range confirming that the impact of a wish experience has a direct result on the emotional and physical health of a child,” says Jennifer Stolo, CEO of Make-A-Wish NECANNV. “Furthermore, surveys found that wish children complied more with treatment protocols

nothing left to burn The Fires of 1856

P

lacerville’s Neptune Hose Co. was no match for the events of 1856. Three fires destroyed the firehouse and reduced the town to ashes.

“But nobody seemed to be discouraged,” wrote John Studebaker, a witness to the fires, “and none shedding tears…A new town went up like magic.”

On the evening of April 15, many of the townspeople were enjoying an evening at the theatre. When the cry of “fire!” rang out, the audience and performers in full costume adjourned to the streets to assist in fighting the blaze.

The fire originated in the Iowa House, located on the east side of Sacramento Street near Main Street. Although the fire company arrived promptly, a defect in the hydrant caused a delay in h o o k i n g u p th e hose—resulting in the fire spreading to and destroying nearby buildings, including the Placer Hotel, the Orleans Hotel, Steven’s L ive r y St a b l e a n d s eve ra l s m a ll e r structures. Hooker’s Store and the post office, both brick, helped contain the blaze—along with a breeze, which blew the flames away from buildings on Main Street.

On July 6, fire broke out in the Union Hotel on the south side of Main Street (roughly where River City Bank is today).

A n o t h e r d e l ay i n getting water on the flames facilitated the rapid spread in all directions east a n d we s t , n o r t h and south of Main Street. Most of the buildings from Sacramento Street to Cedar Ravine were destroyed.

The fire became so b ig a n d th e heat so intense that fire crews had to give up the fight. John

Studebaker recalled: “We had to abandon the old hand fire-engine in the street, and we took to the hillside, I running for dear life to reach our little shop with our home and all our belongings in the back end...

When I got there the fire was also there.”

An account by William January in The Sacramento Union provides a listing of the structures lost and a look at the busin ess distric t of Placer ville in 1856 .

Over 65 businesses and offices are listed with everything from men’s and women’s clothing to furniture, dry goods, grocery, bakery and cigar stores; barber and bath, ice cream and drinking saloons; a paint shop, stables and blacksmith shops; jewelry, shoe and drug stores. Miraculously, there was only one verified casualty of the fire.

On October 7, Upper Placer ville became the scene of a third devastating f i re , w h i c h b u r n e d th e greater part of that area. It is thought that John Murdock started the blaze by leaving a c a n d l e u n a t te n d e d i n his room at the Pittsburgh House. Damage from the b l a ze w a s e s t i m a t e d a t $45,000, or $1.25 million by today’s standards.

The people of Placerville persevered, and soon after the July fire “the banging of the hammer, the rattling of the plane” could be heard from sunup to sundown .

Temporar y buildings were erected and businesses reopened. Hotels were rebuilt and several fireproof buildings were constructed— providing a framework for today’s Main Street.

1/FLOORS AND FURNITURE Hard surface floors are the way to go for all the reasons you might guess. With hardwood, laminate, or tile flooring, maintenance is much simpler—even when pets are coming and going all day. Keeping your furniture dander, dirt, and fur free can be simple with the right equipment on hand. Invest in a vacuum designed for pet owners, and keep a few color-complementary throws on hand. Tossing them stylishly over your pet’s favorite sofa or chair makes a big difference without compromising your personal style.

2/SPACE OF THEIR OWN To avoid feeling that your pets have taken over the house, you need to make sure they have a space of their own. A few extra pet beds in high-traffic rooms is a good start, but dedicating a corner for sleeping, eating and indoor/outdoor access is also key to remaining master of the house. Mudrooms and laundry rooms are great choices, but the kitchen or home office can work, too.

3/PET DOORS If you don’t want to feel like the pets have you on a leash, a pet door is key. These days, they can be installed in an exterior door or window, but it’s becoming more common to have them installed directly into an exterior wall. On the inside, some molding around the opening and a flap that matches the surrounding area keeps the space looking like it’s your own. Our favorite trend with pet doors are those hidden in a built-in cabinet, such as a media cabinet, that connects to an exterior wall. Throw in a stylish pet bed and a little custom paint or wallpaper, and you’ve created a special space.

4/FEEDING STATION Feeding is a messy affair for even the best

Especially for people living in more rugged environments, a monthly trip to the groomer just doesn’t cut it. A half-shower tiled in right next to the washer and dryer uses the same plumbing hookups and keeps the mess—and the pets—contained.

The key is a low threshold into the shower to keep you from having to catch and carry your pets. If that’s not an option, consider lowering the threshold to one of the existing showers in the house, which has the added benefit of helping the human inhabitants as they age in the home.

Cancer Patients Find Hope through Art & Community Events The IMAGES OF HOPE EL DORADO program supported

by Marshall Foundation now provides art therapy for cancer patients and/or family members. This is supported through individual donations. This group sponsors two events, the White on White event in June, a representation of all cancers, and the Pink in the Night event for breast cancer awareness, in downtown Placerville in the fall.

Pink in the Night originated as a grassroots effort organized

by Cancer Resource Center Director Wendy Goossen when she became passionate about raising funds needed to advance the cause of Images of Hope. “We were so pleased that everyone wanted to participate to raise awareness of breast cancer and funding for the new art therapy classes.”

The ever popular Mammo Man Contest takes place at Pink in the Night and was a huge success with 17 men dressed in pink raising needed funding for art therapy for our patients.

Classes provided through the Images of Hope program and the Cancer Resource Center give patients a creative outlet to help better deal with the stresses of a cancer fight.

Local attorney David Combellack raised the most for the cause during the month of October, and Rich Woodhead topped everyone’s one-night totals during Pink in the Night at the Placerville Arts and Wine Festival. Store-fronts decorated with strands of pink lights funded by Marshall Foundation for Community Health symbolized our community had united to fight breast cancer, a powerful statement of hope for those who had been touched by cancer.

When asked why he decided to participate in the Mammo Man Contest, Woodhead explained, “My wife and I both lost our mothers to breast cancer when we were in our teens. I’ve also lost some of my siblings to cancer. Most of all, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, and now is a survivor. The staff at the Cancer Resource Center was fantastic in guiding us through the maze of feelings, concerns, and fears we were experiencing. Volunteering to be a Mammo Man was an opportunity to give back to such a fine organization.”

Having already endured breast cancer in her forties, Peggy discovered that she, as well as her son and daughter, all have the BRCA2 gene mutation (infamous for causing Angelina Jolie to opt for a radical mastectomy to prevent breast cancer). This mutation increases the risk of breast, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic and other cancers in people who have it.

Kevin Barri, President of Wells Fargo’s Foothills Community region, gets to know Max. Wells Fargo’s recent $10,000 donation toward Marshall’s Canine Companion program is a source of joy for all.

Peggy is now fighting inoperable pancreatic cancer with the help of Marshall Oncologist Rashmi Ramasubbaiah, MD and many people pulling for her.

“All I felt was this twinge under my rib, but given my history it was tested, I was diagnosed and of course it was devastating. The tumor is wrapped around my aorta so surgery was not an option. I sought help at MD

Anderson cancer center, one of the best in the country, and they said I was looking at 6 months to live,” Peggy recalls. “That was over a year ago and I’m still here. The chemotherapy is doing its job and shrinking the tumor, and I can’t say enough positive things about the amazing care I am getting here at Marshall.”

That care is now being enhanced by the addition of Max, a warm and furry bundle of therapy bringing smiles and love to the program and to patients. Wendy Goossen, director of the Cancer Resource Center, owns and oversees the development of Max, a hypoallergenic Labradoodle now nearing a year old.

“He’s so sweet and darling, you can’t help but smile even on the tough days,” Peggy concludes.

Wells Fargo Gives Canine Companion Program a Boost Thanks to a generous grant to Marshall Foundation from Wells Fargo Bank, Max has a great start to his career at the Cancer Resource Center in Cameron Park. He is currently undergoing extensive service dog training, and will soon be available to visit patients at the Hematology/Oncology Clinic and Infusion Center, Marshall Medical Center, and various fundraisers and events throughout the year.

Four-legged friends give that unconditional love, security, companionship and encouragement to those that need it the most.

Research shows pets trigger a spike in endorphin levels –the feel good hormones– and decrease cortisol, linked to stress. We appreciate this wonderful gift from Wells Fargo, and we are thrilled Max will be a great resource for Marshall patients. The

Cancer Center Expanding—How to Help Marshall is currently renovating its upper Cameron Park campus to expand and consolidate all cancer services in one building.

By consolidating the Cancer Program onto one campus, it allows Marshall to develop and enhance its cancer services to meet the future capacity needs of an expanding and aging population in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Grants That Care For People Marshall Foundation for Community Health 2015 Board of Trustees

Each year Marshall Foundation assists Marshall Medical Center and the healthcare community in providing grants for essential needs. Historically over the last decade, the needs that affect many of our residents are in the area of mental health and juvenile nutrition.

The fight against these concerns continues as some of the most urgent challenges facing our community.

In December, to help lessen this significant task, six Community Health Grants provided funding for programs that care for people:

Big Brothers Big Sisters

$5,000 - BBBS provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring one-to-one relationships through their Start Early program that changes lives for the better, forever. They serve ages 3-18 who are considered “at-risk” as a result of poverty, living in foster care, having an incarcerated parent, living in a single parent or guardian home, or those who may experience or may be subjected to factors contributing to mental illness.

CASA El Dorado

$4,380 – Funds are being used to fund 3 children for an entire year. 80% of children in foster care will meet the diagnostic criteria for at least one significant mental illness, but only 25% of these children will actually receive appropriate treatment for these illnesses if they don’t have a CASA—an

$5,000 – Through the Mobile Food Pantry program funds are being used to purchase nutritious fresh food products distributed to juveniles and their low income parents in the rural outreach distributions in communities all throughout El Dorado County.

Partners in Care

$10,000 - Partners in Care helps people with serious chronic or lifethreatening illnesses to improve their quality of life. Their goal is to resolve distressing symptoms and improve the health status for those whose condition can improve with better use of health care resources.

Marshall Cardiac Rehab Services

A 50 inch LED TV was funded to

provide presentations on depression, quality of life, stress level and stress management skills as mental health concerns are identified in the cardiac patient population assessment.

Cardiac Rehab provides quality, comprehensive education and services by promoting heart healthy lifestyle habits in a supportive and caring manner.

Marshall Community Health Library

$1,345 – The Community Health Library provides the community with information on health and wellness, including mental health. Seminars in stress reduction to groups of Marshall employees and the public at Cameron Park and Placerville locations will be provided; CDs for each attendee to promote sustained coping routines are provided; and needed library resources have been purchased to be available to the public for free loan.

Medical advances and breakthroughs are happening today at a breakneck pace, and the hub of it all is biomedical research. One local firm is on that leading edge. Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

It’s always been a dream of mine to have my own optometry business. I’d been researching and looking at options and locations for years. When I came across an empty space close to home, I knew I had to take it, even if it meant having to start cold. It was the first place I walked into and envisioned my practice and the dream I had been harboring in my heart.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

I would love to be as involved as I can with the local community. I was a sponsor of Golden Hills School’s Family Fund Run and have provided vision testing for their students. I’m excited for more opportunities to give back.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

As a new business owner, it’s very important for me to be able to trust and rely upon my staff to help support and care for the practice as if it’s their own. It’s absolutely critical that they provide the best care for my patients. I’ve definitely lucked out in finding a fantastic optician, Mrs. Avalos; she’s highly educated and experienced in her field, and provides patients with the care they deserve by taking the time to understand and respect their needs.

What’s your hidden talent?

I love photography and am somewhat of a handyman.

We enjoy taking our son to Live on the Boulevard, the Thursday night concert series at Town Center.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

It definitely found me. In my work as an episcopal priest, I helped families navigate a variety of conflicts, including specific issues people with elder parents were not prepared to deal with (caregiving, driving, finances, etc.).

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?

I worked at a dog kennel when I was 13 years old. My job was to bathe and groom dogs, which I loved, and clean kennels, which I didn’t love. I made $2 an hour and rode my bike there every day after school and on Saturdays; I learned the value of a good work ethic and that sometimes the owners were harder to handle than the pets!

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

I’m part of the Mature Leadership Council, which sets up programs for people over the age of 50 at the Cameron Park Community Center. I also continue to serve as an episcopal priest at Church of Our Saviour in Placerville.

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?

One of my role models is Desmond Tutu. Tutu’s work in the area of forgiveness and letting go of past hurts, while not condoning the one who inflicted the pain, is an important part of the work I do with family members.

Photography.

What’s your biggest job perk?

Helping families work together to see beyond immediate conflict and find harmony.

Sometimes issues from the past have to be addressed and new methods of communication have to be learned. It’s hard work for family members, but incredibly rewarding to help them navigate those choppy waters.

The year Gertrude Kirk became the first woman to register to vote in El Dorado County.

Nine years before the 19th Amendment gave all women the right to vote, California women began voting with the state amendment of October 1911.

Gertrude’s grandson, Kirk Smith, still lives in the area and recently ran for election on Placerville City Council.

The year Placervilleborn Elizabeth Fleischmann became California’s first professional X-ray photographer—a mere year after the discovery of X-ray technology. This remarkable woman, who had not completed high school and was seemingly self-taught in the new science of X-ray technology, set up what became known as the best-equipped radiology lab in the West, located on Sutter Street in San Francisco.

Gold Rush star Lotta Crabtree began singing and dancing her way into the hearts of area gold miners. Admired by local great Lola Montez, and reportedly taught to dance the soft-shoe in Placerville, Crabtree performed across the country for decades, becoming known as “Miss Lotta, the San Francisco favorite.”

n 2010, Benny passed away at the young age of five from Batten’s disease. Passionate about life, Benny’s spirit continues to live on in the Spirit of Benny, a local nonprofit that will sponsor the Fourth Annual Spirit of Benny 10K/5K Fun Run and Walk on Saturday, March 21, at 10 a.m. Beginning at 330 Fair Lane in Placerville, this annual race has grown to over 300 participants and benefits Partners in Care, a nonprofit that cares for the seriously ill in El Dorado County. “Proceeds from the run go to expanding pediatric services for Partners in Care and gives us a chance to help an agency that supported us when our son Benny was dying in 2010,” explains President, Race Director and Benny’s mom, Nancy Milla. This event is a great way to bring the community closer—all while supporting those who are ill in our county. All ages are encouraged to participate, and top female and male finishers will receive a pair of ASICS running shoes. Entry fees are $20 for ages 12 and under, $35 for the 5K, and $40 for the 10K.
