After retiring as an educator, Tortorich got even more involved in the Oregon-California Trails Association (OCTA), where he leads tours and gives talks on the history of the region, in addition to volunteering as a seasonal ranger. For all of his activities, he’s received numerous awards and honors, including the Greg Franzwa Meritorious Achievement Award granted by the OCTA. For Tortorich, however, the greatest gift is having the opportunity to help preserve the unique history of the region for future generations to enjoy. “The Gold Rush made California what it is,” he enthuses. “It’s our heritage.”

rank Tortorich took a rather unconventional route to becoming a l o c a l h i sto r i a n . H e s p e n t decades as a math and science teacher, and later moved on to a career in school administration. Although he’d taken an interest in history during college, it wasn’t until he and his wife began volunteering with the U.S. Forest Service in 1978 that he became curious about the origins of the Mormon Emigrant Trail, an east-west wagon route established in 1848 by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He and his wife started researching the history of the trail, even writing letters to museums and historical archives for more information.

The rest, as they say, was history. Tortorich is now the author of several guidebooks for hiking and visiting the Gold Rush Trail

The Main Street Buzz Coffee House & Café

I

may have been driving down Pleasant Valley Road not noticing that The Main Street Buzz Coffee House & Café was there, but the sweet little shop had a steady stream of regulars coming in the whole time I was seated. Owner Brookee LaMunyon is by far one of the warmest people I’ve ever met, and that warmth really permeates the place—paint color, delightful heater temperature and all. Always down for a fancy sandwich, I ordered the Roasted Turkey with everything. What’s really special about this place is the choice of homemade spreads: pesto, chimichurri, chutney, and garlic-artichokeParmesan. If you guessed that I chose the latter, you were right. The phenomenal spread melded well with the shaved turkey, dark leafy romaine, cucumbers, tomatoes, roasted red bell peppers and salty capers. I couldn’t put the sandwich down. Once I’d devoured it and my Chai Latte had cooled down enough, I sipped from my mug, listened to a podcast, watched the world go by out the window, and enjoyed what interactions I could pick up between the three kind sandwich makers and hungry locals. And for patrons who are more in the mood for a morning pick-me-up, the espresso menu looked lovely!

Q: How can I clean my carpet and lessen the time it takes to dry?

A: Carpets need steam cleaning or “HWE” (hot water extraction). To reduce excessive moisture, vacuum extremely slowly to remove dry soil; average-sized living rooms should take 15-20 minutes to vacuum. Thorough vacuuming means less water will be used during the cleaning process. We recommend using your own vacuum and not the carpet cleaner’s.

Choose a carpet cleaning company with “up-to-date,” powerful “truck-mounted” machines—one that uses rotary extractors (for deeper cleanings) and large air movers (to pick up and blow moisture off the carpet). Meanwhile, crack windows at each end of the house to get moisture out of the home.

Love will be in the air on February 21 at the fifth annual “It’s a Wedding Affair,” a special event designed for brides of every style. Meet the area’s most experienced wedding professionals— from florists and photographers to caterers and more—from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cameron Park Community Center. Admission is free, but attendees must pre-register online to be entered into the giveaways.

Classes for the kiddos this month include ballet, hula, guitar, a tea party and gymnastics; for adults, there’s yoga, tai chi, jazzercise, Zumba, ballroom dance, guitar, a “Beyond Insomnia Workshop,” art classes and glass jewelry making.

Mature adults can enjoy a variety of activities and programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 50+ Room at the Community Center, including games of Mexican train, pinochle and bridge. The Speaker Series on February 24 at 10 a.m. features Mary Cory from the El Dorado County Historical Museum presenting “Touch the Past”—a series of short videos produced by museum volunteers about El Dorado County’s agricultural, logging, railroad, recreation and Gold Rush history.

UCCE Master Gardener Mike Pavlick will teach a class at the Community Center on February 10 from 9 a.m. to noon about “Growing Backyard Veggies”; he’ll cover site location, design, raised bed options and other methods.

Food Trucks in the Foothills is a newly formed organization helping to serve local nonprofits and community charities. “It’s about a group of people trying to make a living, [who] at the same time want to give back and raise awareness for charities in El Dorado County,” says Michael Van Ry, owner of the All Star Que truck, who takes on the administrative role of meeting with local charities and securing venues. Once a month, All Star Que, Morty’s, Cluck and Chuck, and Gryo Stop team up to provide their fans with delicious grub, donating 10 percent of all sales to a local cause. ML: In 1971, when I was 11 years old, my family moved to El Dorado County. I consider this my hometown and continue to live here with my wife and four daughters. I love so many things about our county: the recreational opportunities, the breathtakingly beautiful scenery, the local hometown feel of it, and best of all, the kind people who live here.

HLB: How would you describe your music?

ML: Versatile—from jazz and rock to Americana, country and beyond. I like writing complex jazz chords and progressions, but always appreciate simple chord turnarounds with clever melodies.

HLB: Where do you find inspiration for songwriting?

ML: I become inspired when I’m “noodling” on the guitar. I come across melodies or chord changes that provoke an emotion or a kind of story in my head and develop from there.

HLB: Do you have an album in the works?

ML: Triage is an original band that’s composed of two talented members, Jamie Judd and Rob Ringger, and myself. We’re finishing a three-plus year project for our first, self-titled album Triage. It has a lot of good music—a little jazzy, with some progressive and alternative [sounds], and a sprinkle of the Beatles, all wrapped up with thoughtprovoking lyrics.

HLB: What do you love about performing?

ML: A live performance has energy, from the music and the crowd. It’s an exciting, spontaneous feeling. As a live performer, there’s only one chance to do it right; if you accomplish that, it’s very rewarding.

HLB: When you were starting out, what’s one piece of advice you wish someone would’ve given you?

ML: As a young musician, I received lots of great advice from my father, friends and teachers. Advice I’d like to pass on would be to take your profession seriously—be on time, have your work ready, be wary of the pitfalls and don’t let them trip you off track,

HLB: What’s your opinion of the local music scene?

ML: Per capita, it’s quite incredible how many talented and successful musicians we have in our area. In the past, El Dorado High School’s Jazz Band represented our state and traveled to Europe. It’s unfortunate to see how little money is given to the music programs in our schools nowadays. As Plato said: “Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other…” which says it all.

s a young musician, Mike Lenhart dabbled in jazz and learned to play many of the popular songs everyone sang along to on the radio. When he was just 14, the musician got his professional start with the band Colossus, which toured locally at elementary schools. he decision to have cosmetic surgery is one that comes with numerous factors. While it can be a wonderful and positive change for many, there is much to consider when deciding if going under the knife is right for you.

Therese Sorrentino, LMFT, in Folsom, specializes in helping people cope with the emotional effects of cosmetic surgery— both before and after. To help patients prepare, Sorrentino explains what’s most essential to a successful outcome. “By 18 styleedc.com - February 2016

knowing oneself, a patient will be more able to partake in a successful doctorpatient relationship—one in which she or he is able to articulate their own personal motivating factors for cosmetic surgery,” she says. She’s also quick to point out that while cosmetic surgery can enhance your self-esteem, it cannot change your life.

This same sentiment is echoed by Dr. Reginald Rice, who is double board certified in ENT, facial plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery and practices at Marshall

Plastic Surgery Center in Placerville. Making sure you have a clear understanding of the benefits and limitations of your elected surgery is one of the most important parts of ensuring a positive outcome. “This can be critically important,” Dr. Rice says. “I can perform a ‘perfect’ surgery with an excellent surgical outcome that is a complete failure from my patient’s standpoint, if the results or outcome is not what they expected.”

Another essential aspect for potential cosmetic surgery patients to consider is the reality of recovery and the amount of time needed for healing. As Sorrentino explains, “After the surgery, a patient may become temporarily depressed. This can result for multiple reasons and is normal; it takes time to heal, and how you look right after surgery may not be what you expected…it can be a shock.” But both Dr. Kenneth Sumida, board certified plastic surgeon and medical director at Nuance Cosmetic Surgery in Folsom, and Dr. Rice agree that it’s imperative you and your surgeon be on the same page when it comes to the expected outcome. This is the best way to ensure you will be satisfied with your procedure. “Complications can happen after any surgery, but many can be avoided with good surgical planning and technique, and pre- and post-operative care,” Dr. Sumida explains.

Sorrentino recommends anyone considering cosmetic surgery to seek a few sessions of counseling both before and after. Since many patients experience anxiety before surgery, a counselor can help manage any concerns and work through any self-esteem issues that may be accompanying their desire for the procedure.

Therapists can also help patients postsurgery, as they often deal with intense emotional reactions to the changes in their appearance.

While Dr. Rice says that only a small portion of the population seeking cosmetic surgery suffers from body dysmorphic disorder (a mental disorder that causes someone to obsess over a perceived flaw), it’s important to remember that the effects of cosmetic surgery in your life are only so far-reaching. Dr. Rice summarizes: “[With] all of the issues a patient faces in considering plastic surgery, if I had to choose the most important one, it would be that the patient understands plastic surgery will not change their life.”

n 2002, Darlene Aniasco, co-founder of the newly formed Placerville Chapter of the American Sewing Guild (ASG), decided to place a strong focus on charity to experience the most growth—and she was right in doing so. The Placerville Chapter now has 11 neighborhood groups located from Folsom to Lake Tahoe, and in Jackson and Amador County. Each group meets once a month to share their passion, swap sewing tips and work on new projects; anyone with a passion for sewing and a willingness to learn is welcome to join. All of the groups make charitable items on occasion, but two focus entirely 20 styleedc.com - February 2016

on creating heartfelt, handmade items for people in need. Working with a variety of organizations, ASG members have donated thousands of jackets, hats, scarves, teddy bears, pillows and quilts.

Many of the group members are talented artists whose skills are not tested by the charitable items they create. “We’re very lucky because we have a large number of nationally known fiber artists who are members, so we can learn from them and also teach each other,” explains President Bobbi Bullard, herself a prominent embroidery author and educator. Fiber art refers to gallery-quality pieces or wear-

able art—anything that puts beauty over function.

However, the community care items can be a great way for beginners to learn new skills. “In the knitting group they are asked to practice a new pattern by making an eight-inch square with acrylic yarn,” says Chapter President Betsy Kerr.

“Someone sews those squares into baby blankets that we then take to Marshall Hospital.”

Jan Hopkins, community service chairman, remembers how honored the clients and employees at Jackson Gardens felt after a neighborhood group donated tons of quilts to help decorate the rooms of the residential care home. The people at Jackson Gardens showed their appreciation by having the sewers over for tea.

“One gentleman had been a farmer and we gave him a farmyard quilt,” says Hopkins. “We did different themed quilts that they could hang on the walls and ones for the beds, and also cuddle quilts for the wheelchairs.”

“It is really amazing how much we can get done,” says Hopkins. “The people who come to the meetings are really pretty dedicated to community service...committed to making life better for other people…” Guild members have gotten so enterprising in their charitable efforts that they even save the scraps—turning the bits of fabric into stuffing for pet beds that they donate to groups like Fat Kitty City and Tibetan Terrier Rescue.

Non-members are encouraged to attend the upcoming two-day event in April, featuring speaker Nancy Nix Rice, a wardrobe consultant coming in to talk style with the members (many of whom make their own clothes). A lecture and luncheon will take place in Jackson on April 15, a workshop on April 16.

crime of passion El Dorado County’s Romeo and Juliet

O

n October 26, 1855, upwards of 5 , 0 0 0 p e o p l e c rowd e d into the town of Coloma (then the county seat) to witness the double hanging of Jeremiah Crane and Mickey Free.

The two condemned men couldn’t have been more different. One was a tutor who was convicted of shooting his sweetheart in a love story reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet. The other was a serial killer who preyed upon miners, particularly the Chinese, in El Dorado and surrounding counties.

Crane hailed from Kentucky and came to California to mine gold. He took up residence with the Newnham family in Ringgold, earning room and board by tutoring the family’s children in penmanship. The oldest child, Susan, was an impressionable 18-year-old who soon entered into a romance with Crane. A marriage was planned, but thwarted when it became known that Crane had a wife and four children in Kentucky.

passion remained strong between the two. It was reported that Crane would sneak into Susan’s bedroom at night.

They became more determined to join their lives, whether in this world or the next; Jeremiah vowed to shoot Susan and then shoot himself so they could be together for eternity.

Crane made good on his promise on August 10, 1855. Pulling away from an embrace with his beloved, he shot Susan in the head. The shot was not fatal, however, and she fled back toward her house.

He then shot two more times bringing her to the ground, but not killing her. He carried her into the house and placed her on a sofa where she lingered for five days before expiring.

Crane disappeared and later reported that he tried to shoot himself that same day, but the gun had jammed. Another attempt to slit his wrists failed, due to the lack of anything sharp enough to cut his skin.

It wasn’t long before men in the county were searching for him. He eluded capture for a number of days, but was

picked up by the constable while sitting dejectedly in front of the Newnham home. An angry throng of over a thousand townspeople snatched him from the constable and took him to a cabin where they convened to determine his fate. A posse led by Sheriff Buel rescued him and took him to the jail in Coloma where he was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to hang.

On the day of the hanging, Crane shared the gallows with serial killer Free.

According to the daily journal of Stephen Wing, a contemporary of the condemned, both men took the matter very coolly.

Crane read a long speech saying that “he did not mind dying, but he objected to the mode of punishment.” He also stated that he didn’t feel he committed murder, but had done the girl a favor as she had expressed a desire to die. At the conclusion of statements from both men, “they shook hands and bid each other goodbye and also the attendants.”

o retire with an annual expense of $40,000 a year, you need to save a million dollars, so how can you make sure you’re on the right track? “The key is starting as early as possible and trying to maximize your contributions,” says Louis J. Barrientos, co-founder and CEO of FC360, Inc. in Roseville, who recommends saving five to seven percent of your salary, as well as one percent more every time you get a raise. “The older an individual gets the more conscious they are about the balance in their retirement account and whether it’s enough to sustain into the golden years,” says Paul Lee, CPA principal of PSG Certified Public Accountants in Roseville, who encourages clients to be consistent in saving.

Mistake 6/Withdrawing Contributions When Changing Jobs Withdrawing money now “will result in the full amount being taxed along with additional penalties from IRS and your resident state,” says Lee, who recommends leaving your money in the same plan, if allowed, or rolling it over into another IRA for more investing options and flexibility.

Mistake 7/Gambling with Your Retirement Your retirement account should be in a diversified portfolio, says Barrientos.

“Many individuals who manage their own investments think they can use their retirement funds and ‘play the market,’” he says, noting bad investment decisions could impact the success of your retirement plan.

ACCESSIBLE SHOWER 

Universal design, which allows for accessibility by all, should be considered in all design discussions. Barrier-free showers without a shower dam to step over will allow people to stay in their homes longer. Safety considerations, such as grab bars—which can be decorative and not commercial looking—allow for protection, functionality and help with access in and out of tub areas or showers. A tile floor border around the shower and smaller tiles within the shower visually enhances where the bathroom floor ends and the shower area begins—a visual cue that’s helpful to everyone, not just those who are visually impaired.

 FLOOR IT

Wood-look tiles are functional and attractive, providing the look of real wood in a durable, more-easily maintained surface (i.e. no scratches from pets, easily mopped). In addition, many of these tiles have textured surfaces, thus providing for no-slip surfaces in “wet” locations. Install these tiles in all areas of the home and adjacent to other existing tile surfaces (entryways, kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms). The new and existing tile floors can flush out with each other, so no floor transitions or raised moldings are required between rooms, thereby allowing for ease of movement without trip hazards.

SHOWER POWER 

Even lowbarrier shower entries facilitate getting in and out of them.

Utilizing a coved, Corian shower pan with a small lip at the shower entry is easily maintained (i.e. no grout) and less costly, since there is no need to re-frame the floor or jackhammer out concrete to lower the floor.

Capturing space from adjacent areas can allow for increased functionality; for example, taking closet space from an adjacent room can allow for a roomy steam shower. Tiles are getting larger and longer, which means less grout and less maintenance, as well as a great look! Bench seats—whether corner seats, fold-down seats, or blocking installed between wall studs (for future installation)—should be considered in showers for increased functionality. Handheld showerheads on “slidebars” allow for adjustment and flexibility of use by all bathers and can double as safety grab bars.

DECK THE WALLS 

Not only does wallpaper add a statement, but it brings in visual energy as well as another layer of texture and depth to any room, too. If you’re nervous to commit, I suggest using it on one wall, possibly the one the sofa backs up to, or a piece of furniture that needs a little extra attention to make the “pop” you want to see in the room. Other great places include areas in your home where you aren’t always in, such as powder rooms or dining rooms.

 MIX AND MINGLE It’s bling like you’ve never seen! Gone are the days of “matchy matchy” and in comes a new wave of mixing metals. Your jewelry isn’t the only one that gets to have fun anymore in this department; now you will find spaces decorated with multiple metals, offering a new look to the standard monochromatic style.

GREY DAYS  Grey is the new black. Taupe also has a very strong hold in the market. Both grey and taupe are being used as neutrals to ground a room, regardless of the style.

 EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN Traditional and modern architecture and interiors are back!

As people have moved away from the Tuscan trend, they are moving to one of these designs or a blend of both, which is called transitional.

One of my favorite things to do is take something old and make it look new with the use of updated textiles or color.

Snooty Frog Fine Food Just a Hop, Skip and Jump Away

T

here’s nothing snooty about Snooty Frog in Cameron Park.

It’s cozy but romantic, the food is straightforward and good, they have a full bar, and they treat you like a friend.

The dining room is dimly lit; string lights twinkle like stars above. Quirky paintings and sculptures abound: beach scenes, mountains and—of course—frogs. The restaurant first opened in 1983 in the same Burke Junction space it currently occupies, and had a successful stint in El Dorado Hills in the ’90s before returning to Cameron Park in 2008.

Like I said, their offerings are uncomplicated and pleasant. At the bar, they shake and stir a number of “Absolutely Snooty” martinis, along with pouring wine

by the glass and having beer on tap. On the menu, Chef Michelle Schanel focuses on steak and seafood, her “sizzling filet” being one of the restaurant’s signature dishes.

Appetizers include a chicken platter that comes out sizzling on a cast iron skillet, alongside fresh and crisp vegetables.

The chicken breast was juicy, salty and delicious, with hints of teriyaki. Don’t forget to sop up a bit of the sauce with your bread.

One of their occasional specials—and lucky for me, on the night of my visit—was a platter of gnocchi Alfredo with smoked salmon and sautéed mushrooms. The salmon was obviously prepared with care, while the gnocchi had an excellent light, fluffy texture. The Alfredo was unique and delivered a creamy, zesty tang that provided balance to the savory richness of the fish and meaty mushrooms.

If you have room (I miraculously made some), it never hurts to cap off a fine meal with a little flourless chocolate cake. Dense and decadent (and perfectly paired alongside a glass of red wine), it provided just one more reason to hop on over to Snooty Frog again soon for good eats, good drinks and a good time.

dinner date SHRIMP CAPONATA Affairs to Remember by Sandy Axelrod (Motivational Press, 2015, $34.95) This combination of sweet, succulent shrimp with wine and vegetables makes a very satisfying meal. Make sure to have plenty of good crusty bread on hand to sop up the delicious juices!

• 2 tbsp. plus 1/4 cup fruity olive oil • 2 lbs. large shrimp, peeled, deveined, tail left on • 2 large red onions, diced • 10 large garlic cloves, minced • 2 medium white eggplant, sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds, then cubed (if you can’t find white eggplant by all means use regular eggplant) • 4 small zucchini, sliced into half moons • 3 red bell peppers, seeded and diced • 4 medium ripe tomatoes, seeded and diced • 1/4 cup capers, drained • 3/4 cup dry white wine • 1/2 cup white wine vinegar • 3/4 cup raisins • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 2 tbsp. za’atar (found in Middle Eastern markets, optional but delicious) 44 styleedc.com - February 2016

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large heavy skillet over mediumhigh heat. Season the shrimp generously on both sides with salt and pepper. When the oil is shimmering sauté the shrimp in batches until opaque, about 2 minutes per side. Remove the shrimp and tent with foil to keep warm. Add the remaining oil to the pan and heat over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the onions and sauté until translucent and slightly colored, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic to the pan and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Put the eggplant in the pan and season generously with salt and pepper and cook until slightly softened and starting to brown, about 3 to 5 minutes. Add the zucchini and cook until starting to brown, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the peppers, tomatoes, capers, wine, vinegar, raisins, salt, pepper and za’atar if using. Bring to a boil and cook until some of the liquid has evaporated. Top with the cooked shrimp, cover and cook for an additional 6 minutes.

Taste and adjust seasoning to your palate. To serve, transfer to a large serving bowl. Serve hot. Makes 8 servings.

2013 FATE VIOGNIER Fate wines are created by Thomas Allen, an experienced sommelier living in Jackson who makes wine from grapes produced in Amador County. This is his third vintage under the Fate label, and his first experience creating a white wine.

Viognier is a very temperamental grape from the Rhone region in France whose origins can be traced all the way back to the Roman Empire. The nose of the 2013 Fate Viognier has subtle hints of peach and honeysuckle, but the finish has dry minerality, which pairs perfectly with the abundance of flavors and textures found in this month’s Shrimp Caponata.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

We’re a premier provider of automotive service and repair. We work on all makes and models and perform all phases of repair—from oil changes to engine replacements. My life’s passion has always been working on cars, and I’ve done it since I was 14 years old. I started in my garage at home and grew my business into what it is today.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

Since 2000, we’ve been members of the Shingle Springs-Cameron Park Chamber of Commerce. We’ve also been major sponsors of the Cameron Park Summer Spectacular and supporters of both Ponderosa and Oak Ridge High Schools’ music and athletic programs. We promote education and knowledge about vehicle care and maintenance by providing trainings for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. We’ve held new driver classes with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and had an insurance agent talk about new driver responsibilities. We have our annual “Women, Wheels and Waffles” event, which provides education and training for women on vehicle maintenance and repair. We’ve also had the CHP present about safe and proper installation and use of children’s car seats. In October, we have our annual “Brakes for Breasts” campaign where we offer free brake pads or brake shoes, and the customer only pays for labor; 10 percent of proceeds go to the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Research Fund. We also collect old or non-working cell phones and donate the money to the Breast Cancer Foundation and collect shoes for underprivileged children in Mexico each year. In 2009, we received the Larry Cameron Award for “Outstanding Business in the Community.”

The Painted Owl and The Green Sparrow recently combined our spaces into one.

Both businesses were created by our love for what we do. We share a storefront and store hours, helping both of us to maintain a healthy work and home-life balance. The Green Sparrow features unique clothing, handbags and jewelry, while The Painted Owl features painted, restyled and repurposed furniture and home décor. The in-store studio hosts classes on furniture painting and sells furniture paints and finishes for do-it-yourselfers.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

Cori and I are both mothers to school-aged children, so we’re active in their activities and supporting their schools. We’re also dedicated to supporting many of the local fund-raisers through donations.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

Cascada for the $5 sangria!

What’s your biggest job perk?

Being on Main Street is probably our biggest job perk. We love seeing the regulars and chatting with them, and keeping up with events in our community, but we also love the travelers who come to our little town and fall in love with it.

Where do you and your family go locally to have fun?

We enjoy the Union Valley Reservoir, Bassi Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and, of course, floating on the river during the summertime.

What’s your favorite local event that you go to?

I love the holidays in Placerville. The tree lighting, Christmas parade, stagecoach rides and “Sip and Shop Saturdays.”

It is a great big bowl of balls.

Now, I almost get the bowl part. We eat cereal out of bowls, and soup, and it’s on our kitchen table. I kinda see a connection. But the balls? No. One is made of woven reed; two others, woven twigs. One has a bell in it, like a cat toy… it might be a cat toy. Another seems to be a large wad of dried moss, and still another appears covered in scales made of almond shavings. One I think is some kind of ocean sponge creature, or creatures. The whole ensemble is weighted down with a single heavy ball of polished granite. There isn’t one that you could throw, hit or bounce.

They’re ornamental only. They’re useless.

Now, I’m no Frank Lloyd Webber or

Wright or whatever his name was; home design is not my forte: When Vickie met me years ago, the sole artistic statement in my studio apartment was an old Nike poster of early-’80s basketball star Darryl Dawkins sitting on a throne above the words “Chocolate Thunder.” My couch looked like it was made from the kilt of a color-blind Scotsman and my living room lamp was a bare bulb at the end of a brass stick. Vickie taught me useful interior décor tips like, posters are better left in your college dorm room, couch patterns shouldn’t remind you of an explosion at a ribbon factory, and lamps should have shades. But even I know there is no point to a bowl of balls—figuratively or literally.

More than anything, the ball bowl is just in the way. The kitchen table is not only a place to eat, it’s a place to study, write or browse the Internet. I don’t believe it was ever meant as a place to sit and contemplate a bowl of random balls. Also, what to do with the ball bowl when we do sit down to eat, study or surf the web? The bowl itself is the size of one of those Chinese sun hats, only upsidedown. The only space large enough for it besides the kitchen table is the pool table. But the pool table already has a purpose—it’s where our laundry goes. The last time it was actually used for playing pool was 2011. So usually the bowl just gets shoved back and forth from one side to another, like the sole piece to an odd, unwinnable board game.

I wish I had the courage to state to my wife that, you know what, the bowl of decorative spheres has reached the end of its usefulness in our house—we’ve gotten our money’s worth, dear, but it’s time to move on. However, that would require a couple spheres of my own, and those have been in my wife’s purse for the last 25 years. So, this bowl and I will continue to co-exist. I’ll move it when I need to, ignore it when I don’t, and when it’s really bugging me, maybe I’ll distract myself by finally putting away the laundry and shooting a game of pool.
