wo thousand sixteen!? Can you believe it’s been 16 years since the millennium? It’s hard to even wrap my brain around the fact that it’s been that long since my college years. It feels like just yesterday. Wait, did I really just say that? My AARP membership card should be in the mail today.

The incidence of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, more than doubled in women from 1973 to 2004, and nearly doubled for men. Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?

A: Other than my family, I was a part of bringing the first accessible equipment to a regional park in the Sacramento area; it’s now a park where children of all abilities can play.

A: Anything child-related. I believe we can change the world, one child at a time.

lacerville resident Brenda Frachiseur was working for United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) in 1998 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.

Although her mother died of lung cancer three years earlier, Frachiseur wasn’t about to let cancer stop her—or even slow her down. “I never missed a day of work, except when I had to do chemo in the hospital,” Frachiseur shares. “I’m a strong believer in the power of positive thinking.” With her admirable attitude and a little time, she beat the disease and is happy to be cancer-free today.

After her tenure at UCP (working there all the while she was fighting cancer), Frachiseur moved on to spend four years as the assistant state executive director at Mothers 6 styleedc.com - January 2016

Against Drunk Driving—a role she found both fulfilling and incredibly difficult. “It was my job to give hope to people suffer[ing] the worst kind of loss,” she explains. “It was very emotionally challenging.”

Two years ago, Frachiseur became the new executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County (bbbs-edc.org), a nonprofit that pairs volunteers with atrisk children as a way to help ensure their future success. As a mother of two biological and three adopted children, Frachiseur is especially passionate about giving children every possible advantage in life. “Any child can grow up to give back to the community,” she asserts. “They’re our future—that’s the bottom line.”

Bistro at Villa Toscano Winery

V

illa Toscano Winery in Plymouth is beautiful at all seasons. Sculpted hedges encircle ponds full of fluffy white pampas grass; stone retaining walls hold up soft hills of vineyards; and housed in a smaller, Tuscan-gold building just steps from the expansive, chandeliered tasting room is the Bistro. Dining is patio only—but being among the grapes is why you came, right? Judging by the long list of options, I figured gourmet pizza was the specialty and so ignored the sandwich and burger part of the menu. My mother, daughter and I chose the simply monikered Chicken Pizza, a divinely creamy and herby thing so piled with chicken, bell peppers, artichokes, mushrooms and tomatoes that it was just barely fork-and-knife optional. Peering at other diners’ plates, I could tell that everything was well priced, but considering the pizza fed all two-and-a-half of us for $16, it was kind of a bargain.

If you drive down Shenandoah Road, you’ll see lots of gorgeous vineyards under a big sky, but Villa Toscano has a bright yellow sign at its entrance that reads “Great Food.” I’m convinced that my daughter’s uneaten crust was great enough to be called breadsticks—just saying. take it to the dry cleaners. If hand washing is allowed, or it says: “dry clean only,” but you like to live dangerously, follow these tips: • For finer fabrics with beading, use detergent designed for hand washing, or baby shampoo, with cold water.

Turn garment inside out; use big, gentle swirls and rinse. Don’t soak! Lay garment out on a towel and blot with another towel.

• If woven, hang after partly dry; if knitted, lay flat to dry. Do not iron! Lay T-shirt over garment, hold iron above and lightly steam.

• To prevent fraying ribbons, smudge craft/fabric glue along raw edges. For loose beads, turn garment inside out and use a straight pin to glue down loose threads.

Six monks from Gaden Sharste Monastic College in southern India, where countless Tibetans live in exile, will be visiting Placerville from January 1-14. “The primary purpose of all Tibetans—whether they’re monks or lay people—is to keep their culture alive,” says Joseph Guida, lead organizer of Sierra Friends of Tibet. hen Lindsay Earle met veteran doula Lisa Hart for coffee in the fall of 2014, her own journey to become a birth professional had just begun. Both women knew there were others with a passion for pregnancy and birth services in their area but didn’t have a way to connect with them. The desire to not only network, but collaborate with others in their field inspired the foundation of El Dorado County Birth Professionals (EDCBP), a collective comprised of independent doulas, childbirth educators, midwives, birth photographers, herbalists and more—all of whom are dedicated to nurturing the wellness of

women and babies.

“Pregnancy and birth have been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember, and in addition to motherhood, I feel birth work is my calling in life,” Hart, CD(DONA), birth doula, IBWP natural childbirth educator, shares. “I have six children of my own, all born naturally…I feel birth is a sacred rite of passage and it’s an honor to serve women and families in this capacity.”

According to DONA International, the world’s leading association of doulas, the word doula is derived from the ancient Greek term for “a woman who serves.”

Now, it’s used to describe a trained and

experienced professional who provides support—be it physical, emotional, informational or practical—to women throughout their pregnancy and postpartum experience.

When it comes to the topic of certification, EDCBP’s mission statement explains that members are free to choose their own paths and don’t “subscribe to one singular vision of pregnancy or birth…We welcome new and aspiring doulas into our collective, whether you have attended one birth or over one hundred.”

Earle, once an aspiring doula herself, now serves area families as a birth and bereavement doula—work she says she feels privileged to perform. “[We’ve] only been around for a short time, but we’ve already brought so much awareness to doulas and how they can improve birth experiences in our community,” Earle says. “It’s been wonderful to connect with other birth professionals and know that the people I’m referring my clients to are trusted colleagues.”

EDCBP affiliate Tamara Morales was inspired to start her own business, placentamom.com, after experiencing severe postpartum depression with her first pregnancy. Before giving birth to her second child, Morales discovered placenta encapsulation—the centuries-old practice of consuming placenta to reap a range of purported benefits, from decreases in postpartum depression to increases in milk production and stress-reducing hormones. “I knew I wanted to give it a try, but unfortunately there was no one in our area to help,” Morales explains. “I was so set on the idea [that] I trained and certified to learn enough to safely prepare my own, and when I saw the amazing benefits, I decided to start my business so I could help other area moms have more balanced postpartum periods.” Since 2009, Morales has encapsulated the placentas of more than 1,500 Sacramento-area mothers. “I think being a part of EDCBP as an affiliate helps to raise awareness that there is a wide range of support and resources for birthing moms in our area,” she continues.

“Even compared to when I was having my babies a decade ago, the options are so much more and moms birthing now are extremely lucky.”

journey to mosquito The Buzz About El Dorado County’s Tiny Town

M

osquito is a sleepy little communit y nestled on a ridge across the American River and about 13 miles from Placerville. For those looking for a Sunday drive with a little excitement, try an out-and-back trip there (out Mosquito Road across the swinging bridge and back via Rock Creek Road).

Beginning in 1849, miners explored and exploited Mosquito Creek; according to Lois Pearson, a third-generation resident, the name Mosquito dates back to 1853. Miners searching for a name for their camp decided to use the next word anyone spoke aloud. Slapping a mosquito, one of the miners exclaimed, “Damn mosquitoes!” And so, the area became known as Mosquito—“because they couldn’t call it Damn,” contended Ms. Pearson.

In the early years, the road from Placerville to Mosquito was little more than a goat trail. In 1859, the board of supervisors ordered a road be opened between Placerville and Mosquito, although it was still not much of a road by today’s standards. It’s unclear when the first Mosquito Bridge was built, but it may have been a toll bridge. In 1867, the “wire bridge,” as it was nicknamed, was constructed using cables manufactured near the site by Hiram Tipton, an Englishman. The bridge had no side rails, and when autos began using it, their weight sent the bridge rolling, leading to the current moniker—the swinging bridge.

Minimal maintenance was done on the road and bridge, and by the turn of the century, the drive to Mosquito was daunting. A survey done in October 1907 deemed the bridge unsafe for heavy loads, and residents began petitioning the board of supervisors to repair the road and bridge. A letter to the editor in the April 11, 1924, issue of the Mountain Democrat noted that, “all drivers of conveyances take their life in their hands if they attempt to cross this unsafe bridge.”

The bridge was rebuilt, in its present form, in 1939 by Hector Williamson using cables, wood and cement pillars on each side. In 1943, the road from Placerville to

the bridge was paved.

Logging was big business in the area, and the Michigan-California Lumber Company needed an alternative route to get their lumber to market. In 1901, they constructed a 2,650-foot cable tram 1,250 feet above the American River to transport lumber to the sawmill in Camino. The tram bypassed the need to use Mosquito Road and had a carrying capacity of 35 tons. It was used until 1949 when a fire destroyed the south tower and melted the cables. By that time, Rock Creek Road had been constructed, giving motorists a second route between Mosquito and Placerville.

In 1934, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp was built near the current intersection of Mosquito Road and Rock Creek Road. It housed 200 individuals who worked on the construction of Rock Creek Road, which connects Mosquito to Chili Bar and Placerville. This road, while straighter than Mosquito Road, is narrow and hugs the side of the mountain with breathtaking views of the river hundreds of feet below. Several bridges were also built, including a 140-foot span bridge across Rock Creek. The road was completed in 1937, providing residents of Mosquito with an alternative route to their community.

hile New Year’s resolutions are still fresh in our minds, it might be a good time to add, “addressing your love life” to that list. With a little bit of planning—and following the 5 tips below—your relationship is sure to see sparks fly in 2016.

1 / Forgive old issues (again, and again).

2 / Give more than you take.

Healthy relationships don’t keep a record of wrongs, thus couples are cautioned against scorekeeping. Albeit sound advice, merely not doing something negative is somewhat of a passive approach; instead, actively strive to give more to your relationship than you take. Research supports this idea by showing that those who focus more energy on giving to others rather than on their own happiness are in fact happier. In other words, give more of yourself.

3 / Hang in there just a little longer.

Whether you tend to lean toward fight or flight when things get rough, make a point to calmly stay in the conversation a little bit longer. With practice, you’ll increase your ability to contain negative emotions and work through them together in a healthy and respectful way 24 styleedc.com - January 2016

that benefits the relationship. This works for those with a fear of intimacy, too! If you tend to pull away when things get emotionally close, hanging in there a little longer helps to increase your ability to enjoy closeness and strengthen your relationship.

4 / Take time out together.

Just like plants need water to grow, relationships need time. When relationships are new, they’re exciting and easy to invest time into; but once the honeymoon is over and routine sets in, jobs, kids and other responsibilities compete for the connection that used to come easy. After years of neglect, couples will drift apart, eventually becoming very different people. Anniversary trips and grand getaways are great, but lasting connectedness grows from consistent time spent together throughout the week. Once-aweek date nights can be a good start for severely disconnected couples, but daily connection time is even better. Sacrifice TV time for each other, and be intentional about how you spend your time.

5 / Listen smaller, listen deeper.

Feeling seen, heard and understood is important to close relationships. Make your partner feel important to you by listening for the little things they care about and ask about them. Listening smaller makes gift-giving easier too, because you’re paying attention to the little things that may not be important to you, but will make the other person happy. When you’re listening deeper, you’re listening for the message behind the message— the themes—and how your partner feels underneath the content of discussion or conflict. This is not to be confused with jumping to conclusions fueled by your own feelings, but rather listening for your partner’s emotional experience.

Not being able to forgive is extremely toxic. Old issues have a way of coming up again and again, poisoning relationships with resentment and entitlement. When wronged, we often feel it’s our right to hold this against those who hurt us. However, as long as unforgiveness is allowed to remain, relationships can’t heal from the past or move forward. Deciding to forgive your partner doesn’t guarantee you’ll never feel triggered or experience negative feelings, but every time you choose not to hold it against him/her, you loosen the grip of the past, freeing yourself to love.

Wash the rice in a bowl with plenty of fresh water using a circular motion with your hand. Drain the water and repeat three or four times until the water runs clear. Then, transfer the rice to a sieve (strainer) and let it drain for 15 minutes.

Prepare the broth by combining the beer, dashi powder, mirin, light soy sauce and salt in a pan; mix well and set aside. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Remove the skins from the chicken thighs. Scrape off any excess fat and feathers from the skins with a knife. Stretch the skins out on a flat baking tray (baking sheet) in a single layer. Place a smaller metal tray, such as a roasting tin (pan), on top of them to keep them flat while roasting.

Roast for 10–12 minutes until crisp and lightly golden. Remove from the oven and transfer to a cooling rack.

Meanwhile, cut the chicken thighs into 1-inch pieces (they will shrink during cooking so don’t cut them too small) and chill until needed. Wipe the shiitake mushrooms, remove the woody stems and slice the caps. Add the sliced shiso or chopped coriander (cilantro) to the cooking broth and mix well.

dinner date Food and Wine for the Season with the pieces of chicken and the slices of mushroom and garlic (do not stir at this stage), close the rice cooker lid and turn on. It should take about 15–20 minutes to cook. Once the rice cooker’s alarm beeps, let the rice sit for at least 15 minutes before opening.

Hob (stove) method: Choose a pan with a tightly fitting lid (preferably of glass). Add the drained rice and the cooking broth, top with all the other ingredients, place the lid on and bring to the boil. As soon as it boils (do not remove the lid at any stage during cooking or resting), turn the heat to its lowest setting and simmer gently for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the rice rest for a further 15 minutes.

While the chicken and rice is cooking, cut up the crispy chicken skin into 1/2- to 1/4-inch squares. Then, stir half of the squares into the rice, mixing well, and scatter the remainder on top with the finely sliced spring onions (scallions). Serve immediately.

Makes 4-6 servings.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

I design a line of women’s clothing called modaspia. My husband encouraged the idea of a “real” business after the birth of our son—something I would never have considered otherwise.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?

When I was 14 years old, I worked at a local diner called the Golden Egg Omelet House, setting tables. I learned a lot about grown-ups.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

I rely on community businesses for different aspects of running modaspia—from using a local knitwear designer, to creating lookbooks and postcards to generate wholesale business.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

The business is primarily myself. I contract out two small sewing factories in the Bay Area to produce clothes from samples I create. Both teams of seamstresses are highly talented and show great attention to detail.

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?

Women who run successful design businesses and manage to have families awe me; children need time and attention, and it also takes time and devotion to create something beautiful and unique in your business. I admire all of the female entrepreneurs out there with young children.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

I lie down on the Persian rug I have in my studio and have a little rest—one of the perks of working for myself.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?

Tijuana Taqueria in Placerville for Sunday dinner.

What’s your favorite local business other than your own?

A Wild Hair in Diamond Springs—it’s like a cozy little ski lodge…very relaxing.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

After 40 years of putting up chili sauce in my home kitchen, my family’s recipe for chili sauce is making its way onto grocer’s shelves across the nation. Chili sauce is a comfort food that brings me back to my childhood—harvest season, and the aroma of tomatoes and chilies cooking in a stovetop kettle. I believe that old-fashioned, home-cooked foods tell a story about people and their families, and our products do just that. It all began with my parents at home, using my great-great grandmother’s recipe. And now, 100 years later, it’s exactly the same with the taste of home-style goodness. Moving to California in the late ’90s made sourcing ingredients each summer to can chili sauce even easier, with so many local tomato, pepper and onion growers in the region. My friends always begged me for a jar of sauce, and convinced me to go to the next level and produce it commercially.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?

My first job was as a commercial real estate agent. When I was 15 years old, I took business classes at a community college and graduated high school almost two years early. When I turned 18, I was selling apartment buildings and learned firsthand about creating investment P&Ls. It gave me a great understanding of business operations.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

We source all of our tomato, pepper and onion ingredients from growers in Northern California; this farmer community is tied to my livelihood. I also own and operate the Cottage at Perry Creek in Fair Play and love welcoming guests and giving them jars of chili sauce to have on their eggs or to take home and cook with.

I

consider 2016 the first full year that none of our three kids will truly need their mom or me anymore. Oh sure, the Bank of Mom and Dad isn’t going anywhere, and they’ll still need us around for advice, guidance and hopefully just because they like us. But as far as being absolutely necessary in a keep -your-but ta live -a n oth e r- d ay kind of way? Those days are gone.

Our oldest, Emma, has sur vive d in Los Angeles now for five years—the equivalent of a baby moose finally growing too big to be easily eaten by bears .

Our middle child, Joe, graduated high school last year and is neck-deep working toward his dream of becoming a firefighter.

Our youngest, Sam, just got his license last month and has been asserting his independence in various ways, like choosing Kanye West over Jack White— which so far is the only real instance of any of our kids disappointing me.

When they were small, it seemed th e i r re l i a n ce o n u s would never end, and sometimes, I ’d catch myself dreaming of this day. This is not to say that all those years of being parents of little ones was in any way a burden. Quite the opposite. We LOVED being Mom and Dad when they were squirts—even at their messiest, loudest, most tantrum-throwing worst.

I’ve changed diapers that qualified for federal Superfund dollars and ordered time-outs with the authority of a five star general. I’ve seen runny noses that would’ve terrified Stephen King and broken up fights better suited for alleys than living rooms. We’ve shushed and hushed and chased monsters from closets. We’ve seen wide eyes of wonder mystified by Santa Claus and calculus homework. We’ve praised good grades, applauded good deeds and judged who was a good friend (and who wasn’t).

We’ve tended to hurt feelings, broken arms, broken ankles, and the special mor tification that comes when your teenage daughter realizes that t h e c h e a p d ye j o b just turned her hair not the deep brown p ro m ise d o n th e b ox , b u t p u r p l e .

We’ve sur vived lea rn e r ’s pe rmit s , youth sports, Chuck E. Cheese’s, a n d D i s n eyl a n d at Christmas. We’ve gone from the call of dooty to Call of Duty, to college.

We know.

But that part of our life is ending, and I was honestly beginning to mourn it until a recent weekend when I heard the great Bill Murray on NPR talking about his adult kids. “It’s funny,” he said, “you think that there’s an expiration date on them and there just isn’t. They have an eternal shelf life.

It’s not like, ‘OK, that one’s on his own now,’ you know. It’s not like a balloon that you let go of and it—well, ‘That’ll land in someone else’s yard.’ It doesn’t happen that way; the balloon always comes back to you. It’s kind of nice, really.”

And so instead of missing what is gone, I’m choosing to focus on what’s ahead, because there’s still so much from them I can’t wait to see.

However, make no mistake: Vickie and me...? We still want that boat.
