I

’m pretty aware that the pursuit of perfection is, inherently, a flawed concept.” I have to agree with these words spoken by the great English rugby player Jonny Wilkinson. Even an athlete as great as he admits our limitations as humans. So while I ponder the prevalence of society’s voracious appetite to attain perfection, I can’t help but become mentally exhausted as I meaGood, Better, Best. sure myself against the messages championing perfect everything. They inundate and bombard my daily life, at every turn: magazine covers, billboards, TV commercials, movies and red carpets. Perfect legs, perfect butt, perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect abs, perfect teeth, perfect posture… and the checklist goes on. Is this the point where I throw my hands up feeling defeated by an aging body?

Wise folks answer with the proverbial “Nobody’s perfect.” So, I try to see it this way: It’s good to be better, and best if you continue trying to be. We might not achieve that mythical notion of perfection, but at least we can bring balance to our health—both mentally and physically—by challenging our selves to live a better life, not a perfect one (doesn’t exist, remember!).

This month, we give you plenty of motivation for pledging to be a better you in 2015. Give it your best shot!

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?

A: Love God more, love self less.

Q: Biggest life inspirations?

A: My wife, Linda, who at 30 years old battled breast cancer and continued to raise three children, teach music, serve others in her church, trust in God for all things and continue to love Him, even as she fought through cancer and chemo treatments. She is, and always will be, my inspiration and the love of my life.

Q: What are you most proud of?

A: To see the students I’ve had for over three decades grow into successful people who are now serving others all over the world.

I’m now teaching and serving alongside some of them, and even get to teach kids of former students.

Q: Favorite humanitarian cause?

A: Gold Country Baptist Church and Awana Clubs International.

But Cain remains humble about his accomplishments. For him, the biggest reward is making a difference in a child’s life.

“It’s amazing to see students succeed, and know that you had a part in that,” he says.

He is especially proud of the fact that all three of his children and wife are involved in music education and youth work. “I live in a little house; I don’t have a lot of money in the bank, yet I think I’m one of the richest people I know.”

“P

eople say I teach music,” says Glen Cain, Rescue resident and teacher at Gold Trail School in Placerville.

“I tell them I don’t teach music; I teach young people—with music.” Cain has lived in the Placerville region for most of his life, and even from an early age, he knew he wanted to pursue a career in music education. “You can teach lots of different things with music,” he explains. “Self-worth, teamwork, the value of hard work…all of it.” He has dedicated his life to education as service, both as a music teacher and as a youth pastor at Gold Country Baptist Church; as well, Cain is a former winner of the Music Educator of the Year Award

The Crazy Gringo Taco Wagon Salsa Co.

A

cold day begs for a warm meal, which is just what I got at The Crazy Gringo Taco Wagon Salsa Co. After walking into their storefront, where everything is made fresh, I ordered one Pork Tamale, one Veggie Tamale, Gringo Salsa (for my mild taste buds) and a bag of fresh Tortilla Chips. For a spicy kick, try the habañero salsa, or the tomatillo for something a little sweeter. They recommended that I heat the tamales in the microwave for 90 seconds each at home, so I took off as fast (and legally) as I could, highly anticipating my lunch. While waiting for them to warm, I dove into the chips and salsa, and didn’t stop until the kitchen timer awakened me from my salsa stupor. Both tamales had a perfect masa-to-filling ratio, with the pork succulent in one, and corn, beans and rice loaded into the other. I topped them with salsa for extra flavor, and became immediately warm…and full.

I’d like to learn the art of beer tasting. What’s the best way to get started?

A:

Firstly, don’t get overwhelmed when you begin tasting, and remember that it’s what you like that matters. I would recommend going to a bar that offers flights and getting four different styles of beer. Write down what you like and don’t like. Next time, try a different flight and do the same. This will give you an idea of what your taste buds favor. Once you find a style you like, start tasting different brands in that style—that’s when it really gets fun!

Just remember: It’s what you like, not what’s trendy or high scoring. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to beer.

urrently in a “pen and marker period,” Z. E Pangborn enjoys the mobility and ease the medium allows. When gazing at his highly detailed drawings of various flora, fauna and fictional cyber/bio and robotic creatures, you can see the influence growing up in the ’80s— watching Star Wars and Commander Mark from The Secret City—had on his work. Opening Volution Gallery in 2011, Pangborn now skillfully balances his duties of business owner and creator. “It’s nice to work in a medium where I can simply put the cap back on when I find myself chatting with customers.”

ZEP: When I was in my early 20s I was a street artist in Santa Barbara; it felt like a very democratic way of connecting art with people. I never liked the idea of stuffy galleries that are only accessible to people in certain tax brackets. I wanted to create a space that had an open, inviting feel and still keep my work affordable. We leave our door open and welcome all sorts of people.

I’m always particularly happy when a family comes in with children, or when someone tells me the purchase they’re making is the first art purchase they’ve ever made.

Teens have friends to giggle and gossip with, and so should you. “Parents who try to be their child’s best friend are exhibiting need, not love,” Divine says, “and that’s a big mistake.” Single parents often use their child as an emotional surrogate, while they should be pursuing their own lives. Don’t worry about not being liked—it’s temporary.

“Making good decisions takes practice,” Svendsen says. Offer advice, but when you tell them what to do, it becomes about you rather than about them. And don’t rush to save them from consequences—kids learn from their mistakes.

4 / Raise the child you have, not the child you want. Celebrate who your child is. If you hoped for a star pitcher but your son prefers the violin, encourage him and enjoy the music. Celebrate your child’s strengths, Svendsen says, and don’t live vicariously through him.

5 / Discipline with consequences.

Instead of issuing orders when your child has broken the rules, Svendsen advises, give her choices. “Ask, ‘what do you think should be your consequence?’” Then make the consequence fit the behavior. For example, if your child has stayed out too late with friends, ground her for a specified time.

7 / Be steadfast. No matter how many ways your daughter says she hates you; make sure she knows you love her—no matter what. “You can give your kids everything,” Svendsen says, “but if you don’t provide love and stability, if you’re not there for them, everything else is superficial.”

A particular focus for the AAUW in 2015 is to engage more women and girls in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Currently, women make up only 25 percent of the computing workforce and 14 percent of the engineering workforce. “Getting more women into these fields isn’t only the right thing to do; it’s the smart thing to do,” Gudipati enthuses. “The solutions to problems of this century—from providing universal access to health care and eradicating poverty to curing cancer—will require the skills of engineers and computer scientists, and the perspectives that come from diverse minds. When women are not represented in these fields, we’re missing out on half our potential for innovation.”

anuary 24, 2015, marks the 167th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Coloma Valley. While James Marshall is credited with the find, it was the expertise of the lone woman at the camp that confirmed its existence.

Elizabeth Jane “Jennie” Cloud was born in Virginia in 1822. When she was 16 and recently married to Obadiah Baiz, her family moved to the gold region of Georgia. While her father, brothers and husband mined, Jennie and her mother ran a boarding house; in her spare time, she prospected for gold.

In 1840, Jennie and her husband immigrated to Missouri and settled near Peter and Polly Wimmer. When cholera swept through three years later, both Jennie and Peter lost their spouses. The

two soon married, and in 1846 they joined a company traveling overland to California— arriving at Sutter’s Fort in November.

In September of 1847, the Wimmer family made the 50-mile trek to the construction site of Sutter’s Mill on the South Fork of the American River. Peter was to serve as assistant to James Marshall and oversee the excavation of the millrace; Jennie was to serve as camp cook.

Tensions soon arose between Jennie and the Mormons—whom the Wimmer’s shared a double cabin with—when they accused her of saving the best portions of food for her family; she retorted by saying they missed those portions because they were late to the table. On Christmas Day, the workers didn’t make it to the table quickly enough to suit Jennie, so she said

Shortly thereafter, the Mormons built their own cabin and began cooking their own meals.

On the day Marshall found nuggets in the tailrace, Jennie was making soap.

Knowing she was the only person in camp who had seen raw gold before, Marshall showed the metal to her. She confirmed the nuggets were gold, but the Mormons were doubtful. “This is gold, and I will throw it into my lye kettle, and if it is gold, it will be gold when it comes out,” said Jennie.

Making soap entailed mixing grease with liquid lye, and Jennie knew the lye would damage other metals but not gold, so the next morning she retrieved the nugget from her soap kettle. It was as bright as when it had gone into the pot.

The nugget Marshall found weighed roughly a third of an ounce and was worth around $5 at the time. It’s reported that he gave it to Jennie, and she carried it in a buckskin pouch. Currently, the specimen is on display at the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley.

Jennie and the Wimmer family left Coloma soon after gold was discovered and lived in several places throughout California.

She died in 1885 at the age of 63, and was buried in a pioneer cemetery in San Diego County.

RED WINE ROAST CHICKEN My Little French Kitchen: Over a Hundred Recipes From the Mountains to the Market Squares and Shores of France By Rachel Khoo, photographs

2/3 cup red wine 6 tbsp. tomato paste 3 sprigs thyme, leaves picked 3 sprigs marjoram, leaves picked, or 1/2 tsp. dried 1/2 cup red wine vinegar 1 whole chicken, cut into 8 pieces (about 3-1/2 lb.)

Salt and freshly ground black pepper 18 oz. baby potatoes, washed 3 onions, quartered 6 carrots, peeled and quartered lengthwise 1/2 cup water

Mix together the wine, tomato paste, thyme, marjoram and vinegar. Season the chicken with plenty of salt and pepper, then place in a sealed Ziploc bag with the wine mixture. Shake the bag to make sure each piece is well coated. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight.

Place the potatoes in a saucepan of cold water, cover and bring to a boil. Boil for 1 to 2 minutes, then drain in a colander.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Arrange the onions, carrots, and cooked potatoes in a large baking dish or tray and pour in the water.

Arrange the chicken pieces, skinside up, in a layer on top of the vegetables. Pour the marinade over the chicken. Cover with a sheet of parchment or foil and roast for 30 minutes.

Remove the parchment and baste the chicken with the cooking liquid.

Roast, uncovered, for another 15 minutes, or until the skin is crisp. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.

If there’s no knife-wielding butcher about, you can always cheat and go for chicken thighs.

If you’re unsure whether the chicken is cooked through, pierce the flesh with a sharp knife; the juices from the chicken should run clear.

Get ahead: The vegetables and chicken can be prepared up to 1 day in advance, then simply pop it all in the baking dish and cook.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Lotus Bonsai Nursery and Gardens has been in business since 1986. Scott Chadd began working with bonsai in 1972 and was the public works director for the City of Auburn from 1979 to 1986. In 1986, he came to El Dorado County as their first director of transportation and brought the bonsai nursery with him.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

We are members of the El Dorado County Farm Trails Association and Scott serves on their board of directors. We also belong to various chambers of commerce. Scott is also the incoming president of the Golden State Bonsai Federation—where he represents over 70 bonsai clubs with 6,000 members—and serves on the board of directors for the American Bonsai Society.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

We are sharply focused on the needs of our customers and do our best to make every visitor feel welcome and valued.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

We both like to travel, and visit the Mendocino coast often.

What’s your biggest job perk?

The best thing about owning a home-operated business is the 20-second commute in the morning from the coffee pot to the front yard.

What is your opinion of Style Magazine?

We both really enjoy Style Magazine. It provides access to and information about so many local businesses and points of interest, and provides in-depth information that we cannot get anywhere else.

And finally, customer service?

While our business is conducted largely with clients in major urban centers, anyone who visits the nursery is treated as a valued guest and good friend. We understand that our customers are the reason we’re in business and that their needs are the most important concern we have.

In order to stay involved with the community and our customers, we try to do as much as possible for local nonprofits—whether it’s attending fund-raisers or providing flowers at cost for their events.

Our innovative approach to design is what makes our designers stand out among the rest. We strive to create arrangements that are unique, and push the boundaries of contemporary and traditional design. In addition, we have exceptionally positive energy, which streams through the shop and creates an environment that leaves our customers feeling warm and welcome.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?

My education. I have two bachelor’s degrees: one in British literature and the other in religious studies. I loved my schooling, and although I’m not directly using the subjects Melissa Cowan and Courtney Richmond in terms of my career, they influence the decisions I make on a daily basis. In fact, completing my education may have given me the courage to start my own business.

Dear 2015: How’s it going? Very nice to meet you the other night. Sorry if I seemed a little under-enthused. It’s not you. The kids made me stay up and I’m just not good at it anymore. (There was a time though—just ask the mid-’80s.)

Listen, I know it’s not my place, and I won’t even pretend to know what you have planned for the next 12 months, but if you can, would you mind taking it a bit easy on us? Twenty-fourteen was, well...I think it had good intentions, but it seemed a little...inattentive...and to be honest, we’re all a bit exhausted.

It didn’t start with 2014. In fact, 2014, if you’re reading this, I hope we’re cool. You had a full plate, and I’ll still go glow bowling like we talked about—first pitcher’s on me—but maybe it was the year that, to borrow a term from running, we finally hit the wall. Epic storms. Epic droughts.

Earthquakes. Vanishing jetliners. ISIS. Robin Williams. Bill Cosby. Ferguson.

Ebola. Kim Kardashian baring her butt to try “breaking the Internet” (but, as Blake Shelton so aptly put it, managing only to add a crack to it). Yeesh.

Look, it wasn’t all bad: Those Ice Bucket Challenges for the ALS Association were pretty cool…literally. The Giants won the World Series (and, speaking of—how about all those awesome Hunter Pence signs? I think my favorite was “Hunter Pence pronounces it ‘li-berry’”). Craft breweries were hoppin’, spacecrafts landed on comets and Jimmy Kimmel’s “Mean Tweets.” Compassion seemed to finally trump ignorance regarding people’s personal lives—like how they live them and with whom. The economy seemed to be waking up (although at about the same pace as a teenager on summer break, but still...). And last fall fuel prices dropped so much I started driving to gas stations further away just to fill up. Only kidding. It was nice to see them come down though.

But a lot of problems prevailed: Much of the Middle East remained utterly devoid of peace or sanity. We mourned, heartbroken, with the families and colleagues of two brave law enforcement officers cut down in the line of duty one senselessly tragic afternoon. Kindergartners still understood the importance of cooperation better than most of our elected representatives. We learned Sam’s Club had better front door security than the White House and, in the name of homeland security, we found out some poor bozos have been tasked with what has to be the most soul-crushingly mundane job the government ever

created: keeping track of our every inane email, text and phone call. Talk about LOL. Meanwhile, cyber crooks leaked our credit information online and cyber creeps leaked nude celebrity selfies.

Oh, that too: People were still taking selfies.

Hey, we know that just flipping the page on a calendar isn’t going to make all of our problems go away. We totally get there’s a lot of work to be done and the only ones who can change things are us. So please, 2015, no pressure. But if it’s possible, could you lighten things up—just a little? It’d be hugely appreciated.

Now, I seemed to have accidentally deleted 2014’s number from my phone. Do you have it? Glow bowl starts in a couple hours.
