On a recent kayaking trip, our guide broke the ice by asking: What’s your favorite ice cream flavor? The group, which included folks from all over the globe (Scotland, China, Australia, and the U.S.), immediately went from silent strangers to fast friends. Who knew people were so passionate about ice cream? Of course, my selection (chocolate chip cookie dough) will always reign supreme to me, but it was interesting to hear others’ picks (really, vanilla? But it’s so vanilla…) and realize that dessert, though our favorites differ, is universally loved. It’s a celebratory dish, an aphrodisiac, signals the end of a meal (it’s true, we really do save the best for last), and enjoyed by all…no matter where home is. Fortunately for us, our region is home to some pretty sweet and creative concoctions that are made fresh daily by some incredibly talented, well-respected chefs. From meltin-your-mouth cakes, to fruit-filled tarts, hand-churned ice cream sandwiched in between decadent donuts, rich chocolate truffles, and even “diet-friendly” desserts for those who might be gluten-intolerant, there are offerings to please every single sweet tooth. It was this abundance of treats— and the fact that Valentine’s Day falls on February 14—that inspired our piece on page 38, “Sugar High: 50+ Decadent Desserts,” “The one thing featuring pro tips from we can never beloved bakers, our get enough of is favorite pies and other love. Ironically, February is also American Heart Month, and for ways to honor the cause and prevent the disease (OK, so overloading on sugary desserts isn’t one of them, but everything in moderation… right?), check out Catch All on page 14. The month of love is one of my favorites, and whatever your relationship status, I’m a big believer in celebrating. Whether it’s gifting someone special—be it a friend or romantic partner—with a present that says, “I adore you” (for ideas from local stores, see Swag on page 36), taking them out for a memorable meal at a non-national chain (read all about “6 Romantic Restaurants” on page 52), or improving your courtship by spicing things up (flip to page 26 for “7 Relationship Tips”), I hope you make this year’s holiday extra heartfelt. oseville Resident Colleen Calandra is the new CFO of the Sacramento Children’s Home (SCH), which has been dedicated

to caring for our community’s most vulnerable children and families since 1867. She originally came to the area over 14 years ago, after a long and successful career in finance. At the time, she was looking for a good place for her family to settle down, and the high-quality schools—not to mention the proximity to the Sierras—made the region a quick sell. When the opportunity arose to take the reins of SCH last year, it was an easy decision. She was instantly drawn to the nonprofit’s mission to provide counseling services, mental health support,

and advocacy programs; and was also eager to apply her finance background to making a difference in others’ lives. “Sometimes the best things happen when you’re not looking for them,” she shares. On February 24, SCH will host its 20th annual Crab Feed (kidshome.ejoinme.org/crabfeed2018). Calandra has also served as treasurer on the Maidu-Excelsior School Parent Teacher Club, and was instrumental in bringing Girls on the Run—a transformational learning program that uses running to encourage pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles—to Excelsior School. “Keeping our society healthy starts with our children,” Calandra enthuses. “We have to get them—and keep them—on a good path, moving forward.” —Amber Foster

Though best known for their beta-carotene content, they also provide biotin, dietary fiber, molybdenum, potassium, and vitamins A, B6, C, and K; what’s more, they improve cardiovascular, eye, and liver health, and aid in cancer prevention. Delicious raw or cooked, carrots have been shown to be remarkably heat-stable, retaining 75 percent of their nutrients when cooked. They also regulate the amount of insulin and glucose being used and metabolized by the body, providing good support for diabetics. On average, we consume five pounds of carrots per year, or roughly a quarter cup per week. Despite this relatively low intake, they’re the sixth most consumed vegetable in the U.S., following potatoes, tomatoes, onions, head lettuce, and sweet corn. You can find them in a rainbow of colors—orange, purple, yellow, white, and red—at farmers’ markets.

This year, some dresses from Villablanca's UC Davis Red Dress Collection—created by undergraduates from the UC Davis Department of Design—will be showcased on banners and displayed at the State Capitol during the final week of February. On February 2, Arden Fair Mall will host the American Heart Association for a National Wear Red Day Celebration between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. where "visitors will be treated to free blood pressure and BMI screenings from Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute, a fashion segment featuring local heart disease and stroke survivors, doctors and nurses, hands-only CPR training, healthy food samples, and more," explains Michael Castillo, director of communications and marketing at the Sacramento American Heart Association. On February 28 at the Cameron Park Community Center, Marshall Medical Center is hosting Affair of the Heart—a free event promoting heart health. Among the offerings are health screenings, exercise demos, raffle prizes, wine tasting, and a panel of Marshall cardiologists moderated by comedian and heart attack survivor Frank King.—Emily Peter

G

rowing up in India, Ritu Atwal doodled constantly as a child, before falling in love with painting during high school. After settling in the U.S., Atwal was trained to create murals and faux finishes while working for interior designers and private clients. The last few years, however, the artist has focused on creating fine art, and displays her colorful, mixed media pieces at Rocklin’s Gallery iQ, the annual PlacerArts Studios Tour, and Rocklin Fine Arts’ Juried Art Show (February 3-4). “All those years working on walls and ceilings trained my hands to work fast, and now I find myself drawn to making large works on canvas,” shares Atwal. “Texture and color are my tools for creating the mood in my work.” HLB: WHAT’S THE BIGGEST INSPIRATION FOR YOUR ART? RA: I’ve always been fascinated by the complexities and perplexing nuances of human relationships; [observing them, I try] to understand the gap between what

people portray, and what the truth is. My favorite subject is the human form, whether in a traditional portrait format, abstract, or stylized. At my core, I’m a philosopher and theologist, so I’m starting to experiment with subjects of faith, spirituality, and universal human truths. HLB: HAVE THERE BEEN ANY SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS WITH YOUR WORK? RA: My uncle had a wonderful collection of books about the Old Masters, and I was immediately fascinated and mesmerized by the beautiful, enormous sculptures by Michelangelo. I’m guessing that’s where my love for the human form began. I’m also fortunate to have a life rich in adventure and loaded with loving people. I came to America after marriage, lived in the Bay Area, and then moved to Roseville 20 years ago. Placer Lost & Found County is a wonderful place for family and community, and I like the blend of people from different ethnic and economic backgrounds. I’ve made many friends here, and am constantly moved and taken aback by the generosity and warm spirits of the people.

HLB: WHY IS ART SO VITAL IN TODAY’S WORLD? RA: Can you imagine if no one took time to create, experiment, or express? Where would we be? And if everything was run by a rulebook, what would that do to human imagination? Art exists outside the boundaries of social formalities and political agendas. For me, art equates freedom. It’s a nonverbal, universal language of human emotion. In today’s world of division, frustration, and political turmoil, art has become a necessity of sorts. Artists can express thoughts through their work that others may be socially persecuted for. This gives art the power to evoke change, if only one observer at a time. Talk about sex

Some people have sex to feel close, while others need to feel close to have sex. If your partner is one who needs to feel good with you before they can get it on, prioritize talking about things and connecting with them on an emotional level. Neglecting this can build resentment and create distance between the two of you.

You’d be surprised how many couples I see who have been together for years have never talked about what works for them, what doesn’t, and what fantasies they have. Chances are your partner is into something that the two of you could explore together.

We often take personal offense to many things our partners do. Simple mistakes quickly become very upsetting. Try this exercise: “If I were to assume the best about my partner then ____,” and fill in the blank with something empathic and positive. I like to compare relationships to having a baby. Babies are messy, clumsy, and loud. Sometimes our partners are, too. When a baby behaves these ways, we tend to have more tolerance because we know they can’t help it. You need to employ some of that thinking in the ways you think of your partner. Maybe he had a bad day. Maybe she’s stressed about something. We put up with babies literally pooping all over our lives, but we have very little tolerance for our partners not doing the dishes.

lobalmarketplace.org and globalmarketplace.com: The first is a nonprofit, the other a business, both founded

by Gary Bond and Jan Merrill of Rocklin, because they “wanted to help make the world better.” The .com business, through trade shows and online, markets Fair Trade-certified products crafted by artisans and farmers in remote South American and African villages. The Fair Trade designation ensures crafters are paid living wages and work in safe environments. “The people who make these crafts are poor,” Bond says, “and our retail helps them get out of poverty.” The business, in turn, inspires and helps support the nonprofit, which the couple established, and whose mission statement reads: “to provide opportunities for people to open their hearts toward creating a world of equality,” both racially and economically. “It’s amazing what people have experienced in this community,” Merrill says. The Rocklin-based globalmarketplace.org operates two local programs as steps to achieve that goal—Conversations on Racial Healing, and Rocklin Character Club—both free through the City of Rocklin Parks and Recreation Department— and partners with a third, Kiva, to offer microcredit business loans. CONVERSATIONS ON RACIAL HEALING is a nineweek series of discussions on racism and racial bias, an emerging issue for the changing demographics of this area. “We want to help people get more familiar with each other so they’re not fearful or on guard,” Bond says. Today’s racism, he adds, “is not KKK (Ku Klux Klan) stuff.” It’s more that people simply don’t know one another. “Black people feel invisible,” he says. “White people don’t understand why people of color are so angry. The class gives them a different perspective.” ROCKLIN CHARACTER CLUB is an after-school program for kids ages 9-12 that employs fun activities to help the youngsters appreciate their innate gifts and develop such character traits as integrity, joyfulness, respect, and tactfulness. “We teach children compassionate qualities from the beginning so they don’t become racist,” Bond says. The group meets once a week for 10 weeks at Johnson-Springview Park in Rocklin, and each session includes a service project. Although the program started last month, kids are welcome to join any time. KIVA, a San Francisco-based international nonprofit, makes small to modest loans—microcredit—to help enterprising entrepreneurs start or expand a business. While most of these loans go to third-world residents, enabling women in particular to work their way out of poverty, a number also go to U.S. citizens. “The main purpose is social justice,” Bond says. “Kiva loans help eliminate poverty through equality.” The loans come from supporters who choose their recipients and correspond with them. All are eventually paid back, with a minuscule default rate, Bond says. Rather than duplicate Kiva’s effort, globalmarketplace.org joined with Kiva and sponsors an information and account page on its website. Rocklin Character Club

With each new year, we like to sweep the previous year “under the rug” and start fresh. Your home is no exception, and if you’re looking to kick up your décor while staying ahead of the curve, you might find inspiration from these nine design trends.

1

DEEP DARK WALLS
 From rich charcoal to matte black and even plush currant, there’s a definitive trend toward highly saturated walls, usually accompanied by lush honey and cream accents. In the past, most shied away from dark walls, as they were thought to give a room the sense that it was smaller than it was, but we’re currently seeing a swing toward making rooms feel cozier and inviting—a look you’ll easily achieve with a dark enveloping color. Start with just one wall if you’re not ready to commit to all four.

FLORALS IN BILLOWING FABRICS
 Florals seem to always be on trend, but we’re talking big graphic florals— petals that overtake the entire pattern

and really leave a statement. We’re seeing them in large flouncy fabrics, such as draperies and wall coverings, as well as club chairs and pillows. Start with a few toss pillows to dip your toes in.

VIBRANT COLORS IN LUSH TEXTURES Jewel tones seem to be on our list each year, however, we’ve noted gloriously bold fuchsias and richly hued blue-greens in velvet ottomans and emeraldtufted sofas. It’s no surprise then that Ultraviolet was named Pantone’s color of the year; add it in with a little texture, such as a cozy throw in a bright color, to help a neutral chair really come to life.

PALE PINK WITH STATELY NAVY
 Last year everyone was abuzz with Millennial Pink—a soft ethereal hue of the typically feminine color that we saw nearly everywhere. You can expect more of that color this

Pale Pink with Stately Navy

year, even bordering on lavender, but what catches our eye is the mixture of these baby pale colors with a bold and sophisticated navy accent—a look that makes the former color a bit more adult and masculine. 

 MARBLE TEXTURES AND PATTERNS Not only are we finding a lot of art marbling, but we’re seeing the pattern of marble too, usually in a pale gray or white with veins of rose gold. We suggest using this trend sparingly and with something you can easily change out if the trend fades, like smaller décor items or artwork—perhaps the face of a clock or the handles of some barware.

THE TECH HOME In 2018, you can expect an extremely smart home. From devices that can order pizza or replenish your refrigerator with more groceries, to security cameras that help you keep an eye on the comings and goings of your home no matter where you are, the tech home is certainly the future of design.

in mixing those hues with cooler toned nickel and stainless steel that you may already have in your home. Think of the brass as a warm tone and mix in other warm tones, like olive and rust, to blend it all together.

GEODE AS A PATTERN This falls right in with “marbling” as a trend. In recent years, geode slices have taken on a luxe feel when they’re the right size and color for the room. As a large-scale pattern or print, they make lovely and bold art and even wallpaper. Again, this might be a short-lived trend, so decorate sparingly and cautiously.

BOUCLE AS A TEXTURE We love a good boucle. Though oftentimes we see it on clothing, it’s a luxurious texture that can be quite pretty on pillows, slipper chairs, and even placemats for an elegant meal setting. What better way to breathe new life into the year than with a few new décor items or a freshly painted wall? We can’t wait to see which of these trends shake out this year. Kerrie L. When making chocolate chip cookies at home, don’t bake the batter [right away]. After making it, scoop [dollops of batter] onto a sheet pan covered with baking paper and put it in the freezer. After they’re frozen, transfer into a container; cover and store in the freezer. Whenever you want to make cookies, take out the amount you want to bake, put on a sheet pan, and let defrost (30 minutes to an hour), and then bake. Voila(!)—fresh chocolate chip cookies every time.” Q: What’s your favorite sweet treat to bake? A: Our fruit tart—a staple since we started the bakery in ’85.

f you’ve traveled to, and enjoyed, “roadhouses”—especially in the South or even Southwest—where good-looking bartenders serve up your favorite burgers and beverages as the jukebox belts out Hank Williams Jr., then Broderick Roadhouse in Roseville is just what you’re looking for. Dressed in Broderick tanks and T-shirts emblazoned with catchy slogans like “The Only Cash I Need is Johnny,” the servers dish up plenty of Southern hospitality, with tasty food to boot.

The burger selection is not what you’d expect, even in Texas, but more on that later. The thing I was struck by initially were the fries. As someone who regularly battles the carbohydrate dilema— typically French fries, like bread, are generally left to languish untouched on their way to carb heaven—my plate here told a different tale. Broderick takes pride in their fries, and it shows in both presentation and taste. Topping the “Specialty Fries” list is something that unequivocally should not work: Bành Mì Fries. Imagine the trendy Vietnamese sandwich—but with roasted “pulled” pork and tangy-sweet pickled vegetables crowning a mountain of crispily fried potato sticks, and you

Ahh yes, I mentioned burgers, didn’t I? They’ve got them, and if it’s unique you seek, this is the place. How about a bison, lamb, duck, or boar patty, if you’re bored with beef? Vegetarian? Mix and match if you please. I opted for the Johnny Cash—an oversized 100-percent Angus beef patty served to your desired doneness, with bacon, white cheddar, sweet-spicy peppers, fried onion crisps, and barbecue sauce. Paired with fries (I recommend an upgrade even though the Naked Fries are fantastic), and you’re in for a substantial grub session. As a matter of fact, almost nothing that comes out of the kitchen could be designated “diet-friendly”—though they do serve a handful of vegan offerings, including mac & cheese made with gluten-free pasta and “bacon” bits, a “No Egg Salad Sandwich,” and a tofu scramble during brunch. If you manage to get through the main course, there are sweet treats available for those who dare. I dared. Bread pudding with rich caramel sauce,

JD’s Bakery and Caribbean Café // JD’s (which stands for “just divine”) is in fact divine. They serve baked-daily gourmet

pastries (like croissants, muffins, scones, and more) and Jamaican cuisine. You weren’t expecting that—were you? Though famous for their deli sandwiches, I’m a rebel and decided to try breakfast. There were so many options and I wanted one of everything, but Sunny, the owner for the past year and a half, recommended a Breakfast Sandwich. My first bite revealed ham, perfectly made eggs, melted cheese, and a very tasty Jamaican seasoning (she also recommended that)—all on a freshly made croissant. Talk about tasty. This was not your ordinary breakfast, and I think it was the seasoning that sent it to the next level. According to Sunny, the Jamaican Patty—which is akin to a Hot Pocket, but better (no offense to Hot Pockets)—is one of her most popular items. It’s a petite patty (so small that if you’ve already eaten breakfast, you won’t feel guilty ordering one) filled with either beef, chicken, or veggies. All were very good, but the chicken, with a flavorful curry seasoning, was my favorite. And if you don’t eat meat, or any animal products, no worries! They have a variety of vegan options for breakfast and lunch, along with a Caribbean buffet (Thursday through Saturday). They also serve coffee (regular and fancy espresso drinks) and smoothies. Seasonal Recipe and Beer Pairing CANDIED ORANGE PORK TENDERLOIN If I had a dollar for every time I’ve made this recipe I’d be one wealthy lady. It’s the only meal I make that not one person in my family grumbles about when they sit down for dinner.

What Can I Bring? Southern Food for any Occasion Life Serves Up by Elizabeth Heiskell (Southern Living, 2017, $30)

2 ( 1.5-pound) pork tenderloins, trimmed 1/2 cup frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed 1/4 cup soy sauce, plus 1/2 tsp. 1 (9-ounce) jar sweet orange marmalade (such as Smucker’s) 4 small scallions, finely chopped (about 2/3 cup) 1/3 cup chicken broth 1/2 tsp. Cajun seasoning Dash of hot sauce (such as Tabasco) 1 tsp. kosher salt 1 tbsp. canola oil Chopped scallions, to garnish Cooked long-grain and wild rice (optional)

Combine the pork, orange juice concentrate, and 1/4 cup of the soy sauce in a large ziplock plastic bag. Seal and marinate in the refrigerator at least 12 hours and up to 2 days.

Combine the orange marmalade, scallions, chicken broth, Cajun seasoning, hot sauce, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce in a small saucepan over medium-high. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally; reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and reduced to about 1 cup, approximately

15 minutes. Remove 1/4 cup of the sauce for basting; reserve the remaining sauce for serving.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Remove the pork from the marinade; discard the marinade. Sprinkle the pork with salt. Heat the oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high. Add the pork to the skillet; cook 4 minutes. Turn and cook about 1 minute. Baste the pork with 2 tablespoons of the sauce. Cover the skillet with foil; bake in the preheated oven 5 minutes. Remove foil and discard. Baste pork with remaining 2 tablespoons sauce. Bake, uncovered, until a thermometer registers 145°F, about 5 minutes. Place the pork on a cutting board; let stand about 10 minutes. Cut the pork across the grain into thin slices. Serve with the reserved 1/2 cup sauce. Garnish and serve with rice, if desired. Serves 8.

We operate a full-service investigative firm—where customer service is our number one priority—and deal with cases related to child custody, infidelity, workers’ comp, missing persons, background searches, polygraph testing, asset search, and more. The business and I ultimately found each other. I was randomly asked by a friend to assist in surveillance and developed an interest in the investigative field. I did some research and decided to pursue it by completing the prerequisites to obtain my private investigator license. After acquiring it, I started Javan Investigations.

We provide a personal experience by focusing on an individual’s goals and physical abilities—teaching them how to squat, press, and deadlift with proper technique—ultimately making them stronger and fitter to perform everyday tasks easily and safely. We also offer conditioning workouts. I’d like to think we found each other. Having been an athlete my whole life, I always enjoyed helping fellow athletes, so transitioning to the role of coach was a natural fit. I have over 30 years of coaching experience and was looking for a better way to share it with others.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?

We maintain close and confidential relationships with our clients; in terms of community, we’re involved in the local chamber of commerce and other networking groups, which allows us to connect with different businesses and individuals who may need our services. It’s also great to meet people involved in other fields and find a middle ground where we can support each other and possibly utilize one another’s services.

Working for my father’s vending business when I was in my early teens. I learned the value of hard work and the importance of customer service and treating people the way you want to be treated; take care of people, and they’ll take care of you.

Why is your staff the best in the business? Our staff works diligently and promptly to fulfill all of our clients’ needs. We understand that when you need a private investigator, you need certain evidence as soon as possible. We work hard in delivering at professional industry standards to all of our clients, no matter the size of the case. We also believe in complete transparency and keep clients involved and up-to-date throughout the entire process.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? I’m proud of graduating from UC Santa Barbara and Penn State while dually fulfilling my prerequisites for obtaining a PI license. In a short amount of time, I’ve been able to start and grow my own business. I strongly believe that the greatest accomplishment is yet to come.

And finally, customer service is…?

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Marrying my wife and having our son. I truly found my soul mate, and our son makes me smile every day. No matter what’s going on in life, they’re my ray of sunshine! My wife has been beyond supportive in this journey; I work some crazy hours, and she understands what it takes.

Where do you go when the going gets tough? The gym or mountain biking. Physical activity allows me to clear my head and reset, so I can change course and plan a new path.

What’s your biggest job perk? Seeing people breaking through barriers that they once thought were out of reach—be it losing weight, lifting more weight than they ever thought they could, or getting off of medications—and becoming the best version of themselves possible. There isn’t a bigger perk than that!
