State-of-the-Art Intensive Care Unit Debuts at Marshall Hospital in Placerville This Fall Reflects Marshall’s Accolades For Critical Care Excellence

One of the new all-private rooms in Marshall’s ICU shows the dramatic increase in space for our patients and families.

Excellent healthcare doesn’t necessarily depend on new facilities--that starts with top-notch physicians, caring, nurses and technology that keeps up with the needs of the community. Marshall Hospital’s services for the critically ill—those that need care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)—have earned this distinction. Healthgrades®, a leading national resource for consumer healthcare information, recognized Marshall as a top 10% Hospital in the Nation for critical care in 2016, for the fourth consecutive year.

However, Marshall is always seeking to improve care and facilities to support and better reflect the excellent care already provided. Now, after years of careful planning a new, greatly enhanced ICU will soon be available. The total cost of the effort clocks in at nearly $5.5 million—a worthwhile investment for our community.

According to Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Krejci, the new ICU offers a number of enhancements over the former unit, which has served our patients well for many years. Chief among the improvements is simply the extra space it provides—doubling the square footage over the old ICU, which was 2,565 square feet; the new space, located on the second floor of the South Wing, boasts 5,000 square feet. |

Along with the added square footage, there are more rooms and more privacy for our patients and their families. The old unit had eight rooms with two being semi-private. The new ICU has 12 rooms, each fully private and each with extra space to accommodate family and visitors during lengthy stays.

In addition to the benefits the extra space affords, there are also technical and design enhancements to improve both patient care and staff safety. Each room is equipped with ceiling-mounted mechanical patient lifts for ease of movement, patient safety and staff injury reduction. The centrally located nursing station provides views into each patient room.

There are also two isolation rooms equipped with air monitor alarms to ensure negative pressure is maintained for patient conditions that require this special care.

The old ICU will remain licensed and equipped, offering a total of 20 Intensive Care beds when you add the 12-bed new ICU. The current unit will be used only for overflow when needed.

Marshall’s new ICU reflects the excellent care it has always provided to the critically ill, with the space and amenities to match the care.

As an advocate for health and the well-being of our community, Marshall Medical Center adopted a smokefree policy for all campuses on July 1, 2016.

All Marshall locations, including the Hospital and all clinic and outpatient facilities, no longer allow smoking on Marshall property. This policy includes vaporizers or e-cigarettes. “The need for this policy is clear,” says Marshall CEO James Whipple. “Our mission is to improve the health of our community, so it’s impossible to justify supporting a habit that is not only terrible for the smoker’s health, but can affect others as well. The policy change is in line with all other healthcare facilities in the region, which already transitioned to smoke-free policies.”

ith the Summer Olympics just behind us, perhaps your inspiration for sports and physical fitness has gotten a boost. Stephen Cyphers, MD, President of the orthopedics group, explains the team’s philosophy: “We see people of all ages who have a broad array of orthopedic concerns and we treat each patient as a unique individual with personal fitness and functional goals, so that we can approach their case in just the way that’s right for them.”

No Insurance? Marshall’s Financial Assistance Program Can Help Even with laws mandating medical insurance coverage, some people still struggle to find affordable healthcare insurance and go without. If this applies to you, know that assistance is available for hospital or emergency room services at Marshall Medical Center. Marshall’s Financial Assistance Program is intended to significantly discount or even eliminate the amount you owe.

Program qualification is based on Federal Poverty Guidelines. To be eligible, your family must not make more than

350% of the guideline for your family size (for a family of four, that’s over $80,000 annually).

Depending on a family’s financial position, charges for hospital or emergency care can be drastically reduced to just a small fraction of the bill, or even eliminated entirely.

Goossen Awarded Helping Hands Honor Wendy Goossen, director of Cancer Services, was awarded the 2016 Helping Hands Award at the White on White event in June. A champion for cancer patients, Wendy founded the “Images of Hope” program in 2012 providing art classes and movement therapy for cancer patients. Wendy’s determination and passion originated the now-annual event, Pink in the Night, to illuminate Placerville store-fronts decorated with strands of pink lights, symbolizing a united fight against breast cancer. The October event each year combines an exciting Mammo Man contest.

Along with her good friend, the late Lee Turner, she created the White on White events that promote awareness of all cancers while raising funds for “Images of Hope.”

In 2014 Wendy brought a smile to everyone’s face when she developed Marshall’s Canine Companion program and introduced us to our four-legged friend “Max.” Today, patients receive encouragement to help reduce stress and pain levels as Max gives unconditional love, security, and companionship.
