elcome to our first newsletter of 2022. This is a very special year for us as we are taking the time to mark 35 years since St Wilfrid’s Hospice first opened our doors to the community.

Our founders first conceived of the idea of a specialist unit with doctors and nurses trained in palliative and end of life care as far back as 1980, and St Wilfrid’s was opened officially in 1987.

As a local independent charity, our purpose is to serve everyone in our catchment area who needs our expert care and compassionate support.

The last two years has been the most difficult and testing time in the Hospice’s history, as it has been for our patients and their loved ones. We couldn’t do this without our supporters, and whether you have fundraised, donated, or shopped with us recently, we thank you.

As Chief Executive, part of my job to is to look ahead look ahead and ensure that the Hospice will be here for the community’s future needs. I can

tell you with no doubt that our vital Hospice care services will never be needed more than in our near future, as we continue to see the effect of the pandemic on people’s health.

We hope you enjoy reading this Newsletter, and that you can get involved with some of the exciting 35th anniversary plans that we have for this year.

t Wilfrid’s has been your local community hospice since 1987. 2022 marks 35 years of expert care and compassion.

We believe everyone should be able to live well until the end and die with dignity.

Over 20,000 local people have been referred to St Wilfrid’s vital hospice care since 1987. For every patient we care for, at least two loved ones also receive our support, making over 60,000 people in our community helped by St Wilfrid’s since we first opened our doors.

local charity we need your support to continue to provide care. The care costs of the Hospice are paid for in part by a small NHS grant, however the majority of our £8.3m annual costs are met thanks to the generous support of fundraisers, donors and customers in our shops.

That is roughly equivalent to supporting every person in the population of Bognor Regis, or three times the capacity of the O2 stadium.

Due to COVID, there are more people with later diagnoses who need care, younger people who have been diagnosed with terminal disease, and people who have not been able to access their healthcare appointments.

This has affected many of our patients

The pandemic means that our community needs our services now more than ever, and as an independent

and our case load has increased, with people dying more quickly, and with more people in crisis.

We also know that our catchment area population is growing, and by 2043 will rise from 200,000 65+ people, to over 300,000. We aim to ensure that our services are available to all in our community, and we reach out to everyone who may need us.

Making moments matter: sharing stories of the past 35 years

“My wonderful dad was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in April 2021 and sadly died just five weeks later. From the moment St Wilfrid’s entered our lives they made the most enormous difference. Nothing was too much trouble and I felt completely supported in caring for dad at home – this was all dad wanted.

I know I couldn’t have given dad the peaceful and dignified death he deserved without the amazing St Wilfrid’s team.”

You can choose to have a special leaf inscribed with the name of your loved one on our beautiful sculpted Memory Tree here at the Hospice. This is also a lovely way to remember a birthday or an anniversary.

Community Supporters T hank you to all our community supporters, who are making a difference to local lives:

Skydives for Spencer Loving wife Lynsey and 2 year old son Obi lost husband and father Spencer Chapman to bowel cancer when he was just 43 years old. 16 of his brave friends took to the skies together to tandem skydive raising £2,660 in memory of the man who meant so much to so many.

James Gibbens, Spencer’s friend said: “St Wilfrid’s Hospice looked after Spencer with great care on his final days and we are all jumping to raise money for the Hospice, his family and in memory of Spencer. On the day, it was just like his favourite saying… ‘It’s Mind over Matter’!

If you’d like to do a sponsored skydive you can sign up for our July group jump or you can book your own any time.

Calendar Girls Felpham Dippers, a local group of sea swimming ladies, have raised over £5,000 so far by putting together a fantastic 2022 calendar and selling them locally to raise funds for the Hospice. Chilly but we love the calendar ladies, fabulous!

Lotus Styling

With a wheelbarrow full of prizes kindly donated by patrons, Bognor based Lotus Styling went on to raise over £600 with their winter raffle.

Pictured with Daren, Kate and Kier is Karen from our Terminus Road Donation Centre. Karen routinely delivers bras we are unable to sell to Lotus Styling which they kindly send on to charities in developing countries.

Walking for Dad

Alistair, and his sister Penny, along with friends from the Apuldram Centre, did a 12 mile walk on the South Downs Way raising over £2,000, in remembrance of their dad who was cared for at the Hospice. They did lots of training walks but unfortunately, they were scuppered by the weather for their first planned date to walk. But, they persevered and got on the trail and completed it successfully. Way to go Alistair!

We asked Alistair what the hardest part was? Alistair said, “Mum was bringing our packed lunch but she couldn’t find us where we were due to meet so we got a bit hungry! We found each other on Bignor Hill in the end!”

Christmas Tree Recycling Success This year we collected almost 1000 trees and raised and amazing £13,355 in donations.

Thank you so much to our team of volunteer Christmas Elves, who did amazing work on this ecological and charitable project!

Ross rows to success Ross Fisher – aged 74 – member of the Felpham Sailing club, used a row boat to row from Chichester harbour to Felpham sailing club, a distance of 20 miles, and it took him 7 hours 10 mins to complete it which is really fast going! He raised £5,000 and also raised enough to buy a defibrillator for the Sailing Club. Fantastic work Ross!

Intrepid Penny on a Bus Penny Ibbott, our intrepid ‘Boomer on a bus’, travelled the length and breadth of the country in 41 days and all just using her concessionary bus pass raising £2,839.30! What an inspiration!

On the road

Look out for our newly painted vans in the area, and give us a wave if you see our drivers! Gareth, one of our drivers explains a bit about his role: “If you thought being a St Wilfrid’s van driver was just driving around and shifting a bit of furniture, nothing could be further from the truth. Many of our customers want to chat and for us to spend 5 or 10 minutes with them will make little difference to our schedule, but could make a big difference to them.

We regularly collect donations where it becomes apparent that the donor is recently bereaved and is clearing their loved one’s home. This requires a great deal of sensitivity and often results in us going that extra mile to try to make their difficult situation a little bit easier.”

Retail volunteers we need you!

Volunteering can become a passion to last a lifetime.

Feel good doing good by volunteering with St Wilfrid’s Hospice and make new friends, learn new skills, and get creative in a safe environment making a difference to your local community.

Sue Milnes, volunteer for St Wilfrid’s eBay store said, “I started volunteering in e-commerce once a week at the end of the first lockdown.”

It’s always fascinating to see what sells fast – not always what you would expect. It’s amazing how much china sells – which is great but not so fun to pack up as you have to wrap it up so carefully – it takes time but it’s worth it.”

Sue joined nearly a hundred new volunteers last year who together donated over 1500 hours of their time.

Time which means so much to the hundreds of patients and their loved ones who benefit from St Wilfrid’s compassionate and expert end of life care.

Shop Manager Andrew Mitchell said “Our retail volunteers make a massive contribution to the Hospice. Just last year, Chalcroft furniture outlet passed £1,000,000 worth of income for the Hospice since opening!

It’s been a real team effort and none of it would be possible without all of the support of our retail volunteers.”

Amazing donations Recently, Alan at our specialist Retro and Vintage shop in Chichester, was donated a fancy dress outfit previously worn to the London Lord Mayors Party in 1927.

Sue Painter celebrates 22 years being part of the team and celebrates what working for retail means to her:

We also had a consignment of Toby Jugs, over 20 of them, in great condition which have proved very popular with shoppers!

“My favourite part of being in a retail shop is the variety, and all the different people I meet. I’ve worked here for 22 years because I am so passionate about the cause.

None of us know when we, or a member of our family or a friend, might need the Hospice’s help.

Meet Chris, who uses pretty donated plates to make cakes stands to sell in our shops. We’ve raised over £2,500 selling the cake stands, which retail at between £8 and £12 so look out for them on your next visit!

I describe the Hospice as like the biggest, warmest hug you could ever have. I’m proud to be involved and I’ve got no intention of slowing down yet even though I’m 70 this year!”
