At the ‘snapshot’ date of 5 April 2020 St Wilfrid’s Hospice had a total of 238 employees

Our Workforce Our 2020 Gender Pay Gap Report shows that the workforce at St Wilfrid’s Hospice consists of more females than males.

As at 5th April 2020 St Wilfrid’s Hospice employed 238 people, 37 male and 201 females, with 40% of the male workforce employed in the lower quartile increasing to 62% in the lower two quartiles.

84% of the Hospice workforce is female, which is above the workforce pattern within the NHS at 77%*. 84% of the Very Senior Manager roles are also held by women, compared to 47% of roles in the NHS* (*NHS Employers Gender Report in the NHS, 2019).

Although the majority of the male workforce are in the lower two quartiles at 62%, this is an improvement since 2019 when 67% of males were found in these categories. Our predominantly female workforce in nursing roles provide around the clock patient care and as weekend and unsocial hours enhancements are part of the remuneration package this has an overall impact.

We continue to strive for a balanced and diverse workforce and continue to train and educate our staff in applying inclusive practices. Our commitment is to ensure all opportunities are accessible to everyone and we have a committee focused to positively influence our approach, promoting the benefits and understanding of a truly diverse workforce.

The Hospice is committed to the principle of equal pay and determines pay using the St Wilfrid’s Hospice Pay Scales for banding and basic salary determination. We completed a comprehensive review of our pay structure in 2020, including the Senior Management Team but not yet including the retail team, reflecting our reward principles and ethos to have a system that is equitable and transparent, valuing competence and contribution.

We also built upon the existing job evaluation framework that considers the requirements of the post and not personal characteristics of the post holder.

What is the gender pay gap?

The gender pay gap is a measure of the difference between the average earnings of men and women across an organisation, regardless of role or seniority.

The gender pay gap is not the same as equal pay.

statutory calculations annually (as at 5th April) to show any gap between male and female employees. The figures are calculated using the standard methodologies used in the Equality Act 2010, Regulations 2017, which compares the pay of males and females.

Due to the pandemic the date of publishing the figures has been deferred for all employers to October from the usual date of 4th April from the ‘snapshot’ data being taken.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice took our snapshot data on 5th April 2020 and although at the date we had less than the 250 employees we opted to continue to produce and publish a report.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice does have a negative median pay gap, though we are pleased to report that for Ordinary (i.e. contractual) pay this has reduced to -29.65% compared to the previous report of -38.0%.

We will continually explore how we can close any gaps found within the organisation to create more gender balance, given we have more women than men.

Understanding the definitions Gender Pay Gap is calculated as the difference between average hourly earnings between male and female staff, and a positive figure denotes that women earn on average less than men.

Mean –The average derived by summing the values for a given sample and then dividing the sum by the number in the sample i.e. jobs. In earnings distributions, the mean can be disproportionately influenced by a relatively small number of high paying jobs.

Median – the value which 50% of the jobs fall. It is the Office of National Statistics (ONS) preferred measure of average earnings as it is less affected by a relatively small number of high earners.

As no employees receive bonus payments, no bonus data is provided.

Statement from St Wilfrid'S Hospice Chief Executive Our 2020 gender pay gap report continues to reflect the wider health and social care sector workforce pattern employing more women than men, with our predominantly female nursing staff appearing in the middle and upper pay quartiles.

As with many organisations 2020 was an exceptional year with many challenges met and overcome. The strength of character and resilience of our team from all sectors has been humbling, and I’m truly proud to lead an amazing workforce, who all live the Hospice values and shows great commitment to help and support one another as well as everyone who needs us in our community.
