“No one should be more important than the team�.

On December 7, 2020, we heard sighs of relief from all sides in the press room at Stayen. From the board and from brand-new coach Peter Maes who could finally get back to work in the highest soccer league. The board had found the ideal coach to push the club to the top, a Limburger with the heart and the fire of the STVV-supporter. Peter Maes breathed Stayen and could hardly wait to get started on his assignment.

4 times national champion with Anderlecht

Peter feels like a real Lommelite, even though he was born in Schoten on 1 June 64. Peter: “For a while, my mother worked for a diamond merchant in Antwerp, hence my birthplace, but she was homesick for Lommel and that’s why we returned.”

He was in goal for Lommel SK at 16 and later promoted from third to second division. After an intermediate step at Racing Mechelen, he ended up at Anderlecht. A special story.

Peter: “I had broken my leg and still Aad de Mos wanted me at Anderlecht. I needed one and a half year to get fit. I worked like a horse and managed to convince Michel Verschueren. Through devotion. If I have to, I’ll go through a wall. You have to stick to your ideals, that’s what I’ve always done”.

Peter ended up playing for Anderlecht for 6 years. In that period, he became national champion four times. “I had Filip De Wilde in front of me, I was the ideal second goalkeeper. I never disappointed and still played quite a few matches, including European ones.”

“I was verbally strong”

At Anderlecht, he learned a lot from Dutch coaches Boskamp and de Mos. “De Mos was very strong in making his players mentally strong. A good psychologist, he could motivate a team.

With Johan Boskamp I initially had a love-hate relationship. We quarreled a lot, sometimes we stood nose to nose, but in the long run we couldn’t miss each other anymore. I coached from the bench. He made the group stronger through me. A bond grew between us with mutual respect.”

After Anderlecht, Peter played another good season at Beveren and then got another three-year contract at Standard. “I still played a lot of matches there. My strong points? I was verbally strong and could thus provide a good organization. I also had good reflexes on the line.”

Coach of the Year

He ends his goalkeeping career at Beerschot. There, Franky Van der Elst is then coach and he gives him good advice. “I had an offer to become a trainer and hesitated. Franky said I should jump and take my chance and so I became a coach at Meerhout at 38.”

And then there was momentum in his coaching career. Four years at Geel and four years at KV Mechelen followed. “It was always cleaning up debris. At Mechelen I built a new team and we played a cup final. Then I had to do the same at Lokeren. President Lambrecht was an autocrat but I said my opinion and I made his players better. At Lokeren, we won the cup twice and played Europe twice.”

2014 at Lokeren is a top season. Peter Maes is named coach of the year. The best coach in the country! Then offers must follow, right?

“Genk had already shown interest a few times. In 2015, I jumped at the chance. Genk immediately played playoff 1 and I laid the foundation for the team that later became champions. But I had to leave after disagreements with Patrick Janssens.”

“I want to be in the group”

Peter trains Lokeren again briefly in 2017 and keeps Lommel in 1B last season.

And then there’s December 7: Peter Maes at Stayen. He has to put his affairs in order again.

“So I had to do that in many places. We are working very hard here again. We have to set up a strong block, know what to do when we lose the ball and fight for every ball. If that’s okay, we’ll start playing better football.”

The STVV supporters will be happy to hear it. Stayen needs to rumble again after the dreaded corona times.

Peter: “I can’t stand still next to the line, I want to be in the group. Intervene directly if necessary, better to prevent than to cure. No one should be more important than the team. Put that in the title.”

first big winter transfer for Canaries The motto is “if it turns a little less, then add another tooth in”

With the transfer of Christian Brüls, the renowned player of Westerlo (1B), the board of our team immediately set the tone at the turn of the year. Playing better return games is the ambition and strengthening the current selection is very logical. Brüls was the playmaker in coach Bob Peeters’ team last season and also in the current season and proved that age (32) is not a criterion for performing well. With Christian as an attacking midfielder, the creativity in Peter Maes’ team will undoubtedly crescendo and Duckens Nazon and Yuma Suzuki will be able to further increase their goal scoring total.

Was it a surprise that the return to Westerlo became such a big windfall?

“In a career of 16 years, every footballer alternates good periods with less good ones. I had some really good memories of a few clubs, such as the cup final with Westerlo, but apart from that I don’t want to look to the past. After six months without a club I was very grateful that Westerlo gave me another chance. With 10 goals and 7 assists I could give the club something back last season. A few clubs, like Eupen, showed interest in a transfer but the board didn’t want to cooperate.

But I had an expiring contract that they didn’t want to extend, so that’s why. A phone call from Peter Maes brought me into contact with STVV and the transfer was quickly arranged.”

No fears about the transfer from a club in 1B to a club in 1A?

“No not at all, my age (Christian is 32) doesn’t mean anything. Just look at Steve De Ridder, who is now reaching such a high level. You just have to do it! Of course, you have to be physically fit, but experience also plays a big role. Look, I want to be important for the team, and above all offensively I want to bring more creativity and create more chances. I want to emphasize that the difference between 1A and 1B is not as big as it was ten years ago. OH Leuven and Beerschot prove that. I predict that Union will have no problem maintaining themselves next season. The clubs from 1B have improved in all areas and all show ambition to promote to the Jupiler Pro League. Just look at Lommel, how they have profiled themselves in the short term and also want to advance to the highest level.”

How well do you know the current STVV?

“To be honest, I didn’t really follow STVV but watched many matches from 1A so I still have a good idea of the clubs qualities. Even against Beerschot, I didn’t really look at the team itself, but I did look at how my new colleagues positioned themselves and how they prefer to be played on. It is important to step up a gear in such matches when things are not going as well and to achieve a result from a good organization. If you look at the rankings, there are still seven or eight clubs that have to fight hard to stay in the competition. With four home games this month, STVV should certainly be able to consolidate its current position.”

Last question Christian, what about your positive test at Westerlo?

(Laughs) “Together with the physiotherapist and the cook of the club I tested positive and was forced to miss 2 matches.

After the necessary quarantine, we were tested negative but one day later, a scheduled blood test showed that we had no antibodies so we had not contracted corona. So, I could have played those two matches and the physiotherapist would not have had to close his practice.”

STVV has a Limburger back at the helm with Peter Maes for the first time since the departure of Guido Brepoels in 2013. Maes will be assisted by fellow rookies Davy Heymans and Stefan Winters, who come over from Lommel SK. Davy (42) is the new T2, Stefan (35) takes on the role of physical coach. We invited the roguish duo for a video interview and are happy to introduce them to you.

What should STVV fans know about you?

Davy: “In the past I was a professional football player for MVV and KVSK United (now Lommel SK). After my playing career, I chose to go into education. Then, in the summer of 2019, Ronny Van Geneugden came with the offer to become assistant to Stefan Gislason at Lommel. A few months later, Gislason was replaced by Peter Maes and that’s where our bond started.”

Stefan: “When I was 21, I had to hang up my soccer boots due to injuries. My passion for sports has remained. I took my first steps as a physical coach at OHL when I was still studying at the Sportkot. Meanwhile I have been teaching for twelve years at the trainer school, where I first met Davy as a student. Since the beginning of 2020 I was working full time as a physical coach at Lommel SK. Now I am ready for my first challenge at the highest level at STVV.”

Meanwhile, you are working together for the Canaries. How did the ball start rolling?

Davy: “Peter (Maes) first contacted Stefan informally to sound out the situation. Then Stefan and I had a little talk. Only if we could make the switch together, we would take that chance. In these corona times, it takes a bit more time before there is a concrete proposal on the table and then there still had to be talks with Lommel. Fortunately, the club agreed to our transfer and we can now work together at Sint-Truiden at the highest level.”

Stefan: “Davy and I know each other very well. We often go cycling together and in pre-corona times also skiing. However, our relationship did not start very well. Davy was a student of mine at the trainer school and because of his busy schedule he missed some lessons, so he had to make substitute assignments. These usually did not meet my expectations and so I often sent him back with a lot of ‘homework’. At the time, he didn’t like me very much. Two years later I was sitting at Ronny Van Geneugden’s desk and who walked in? Davy Heymans! (laughs) Since then we have built a close relationship.”

How do you look back on your first weeks at the club?

Stefan: “We were received very warmly. The club is surrounded by friendly people, all with a heart for STVV. In the beginning it is discovering. Especially the personalities of the players and so on. We found a group with little confidence, also the work ethic could be better.

Thanks to the people around the team and Peter Maes’ coaching, things are changing now. The experience is completely there again.”

Davy: “When you see that someone like Peter Delorge (team manager), a man with such a career, is ready for us day and night, it’s just fantastic. Also, the equipment men, the people from the kitchen, the greenkeepers, the accommodation, ... everything is top! We try to be an addition. We come up with new things. There is an extensive video analysis, the running schedules are closely followed. The players are constantly being adjusted. Together we are really making strides.”

There was some concern about the physical readiness of some players.

How do you address that?

Stefan: “When I start somewhere, I always look at the chronic load of the group first. What efforts have been made recently? Based on that, I can estimate what needs to be done. But those data were not available or unusable. I would like to change that. Now I focus mainly on what we need. Peter (Maes) likes to switch from a tight block. You need explosive runs for that and we are working on that now. Especially the players with little match rhythm need to step up their game. It’s still too early to derive progress from data, but my feeling is that we are on the right track.”

At the bottom, it’s all close together. The other “tail teams” are also taking points.

How do you deal with that?

Davy: “I prefer to see wins at the bottom. That creates a harmonica effect, which distributes the pressure over a larger number of teams.

So, I don’t find that a problem. If we keep winning we will naturally climb up the rankings. We have our goal of 35 points to save us. To achieve that, we sail our own course. Being guided by other results only creates fear. We have to believe in our own strength and I feel that the players have made that click.”

Stefan: “Peter (Maes) remains very level-headed and calm under our current place in the standings. He also radiates that calmness to the group. I think his experience definitely plays a role in that. According to him, the house is not on fire, but we have to work very hard.

There is no question of a demotion ghost yet. We’re only halfway through the season and everything is still possible. There’s enough potential in this group and maybe we’ll get some reinforcements during the winter mercato.”

The staff consists mainly of local people. How do you experience the collaboration?

Davy: “In terms of communication, that works very well. Short lines of communication, clear agreements and so on. During the first home game against Charleroi, I was approached by an older steward. The man had to hold back his tears because he was so happy to be able to talk about his STVV again with someone from the coaching staff. For me, that was the best moment of the evening. I think the club realizes how important it is to keep the connection with the community.”

Finally, what are your ambitions for the rest of the season?

Stefan: “Saving us! And that it doesn’t have to come down to the last two games (against Genk and Anderlecht n.d.r.). That’s the ambition for the team. For me personally, it’s enriching myself and taking the next steps. There is a great medical staff that does a good job. I want to build an equivalent physical staff. That was one of the motivations to come to Sint-Truiden. To make progression as a coach and as a person, even if it’s with Davy there.” (laughs)

From Hamburg to being a Canary

I wonder what kind of comment Leroy Sané gave after the game when he was subbed off after coming on halfway through? Even now, Tatsuya Ito reads football articles in German. He joined Hamburger SV when he was 18 years old, his adaptation to life in Belgium wasn’t that difficult because that he can speak English, which he learned because “the grammar is similar to German, and I also learned it at school. We asked Ito about his life in Europe and his interactions with Japanese players, including his personal life.

His youth

Tatsuya Ito was born and raised in Asakusa, a famous sightseeing spot. He is a genuine old town kid, but he is not aware of it. “From the fourth year of elementary school to the summer of my third year of high school, I was in the Kashiwa Reysol youth team. I went to Kashiwa all the time and came home late at night, so Asakusa is just where my family lives.

Until elementary school, it took him an hour and a half to go to Kashiwa Reysol’s training centre by train or bus. However, “after I entered junior high school, I started using two bicycles, one from home to Ueno Station and the other one from Kashiwa Station to the training ground, and it became much easier,” smiled Ito. I used to go to the arcade and play with my friends,” Ito said of his childhood, but “looking back now, all I did was to play football.

Hamburg

Even after moving to HSV’s U19 team and living in the German metropolis Hamburg, Ito said, “I think even J-League players start having fun after they turn 20. I went to Germany when I was 18, so my life was the same as in Japan,” he said.

HSV is a big club, and they have good support for players from abroad. Even so, the presence of Gotoku Sakai (now Vissel Kobe) in the first team was “a big help,” Ito says with gratitude.

Sakai is a personable guy and a real big brother. He took care of me in every possible way. He supported me on and off the pitch when I first joined the first team. Even now, when I need a piece of advice, he gives it to me.

Ryo Miyaichi of St. Pauli, who is also based in Hamburg, shared some useful information with Ito, as they are both wingers. Miyaichi, who is often injured, never looked timid in front of Ito and Sakai. Miyaichi’s attitude was truly professional. His attitude was really professional, especially last year when I saw him come back from injury and play a full season.

National team

Japan is a country prone to natural disasters, and Ito was selected for the national team in September 2018 after he began playing for HSV’s first team. a friendly match against Chile was scheduled to be played in Sapporo on September 8, but was cancelled due to a massive earthquake the day before that killed people in Hokkaido and shut down infrastructure. At that time, the members of the Japanese national team took the initiative to send a message of encouragement to the people of Hokkaido.

When I saw the actions taken by the Japanese delegation for the people affected by the disaster, I realized once again that the Japanese national team is a very influential group that is watched by many people.

STVV

In the summer of 2019, Ito came to STVV. “STVV has many young players, so I can communicate with them without hesitation. I’m the one who speaks English among the Japanese players, so I’m able to step in between them. The online battle game “Call of Duty: Warzone” has given Ito an additional tool for communication.

It hasn’t been a year yet, but it’s interesting. My ‘friends’ can tell if I’m playing the game, so I send messages to my phone with five or six of my teammates, like Durkin, Nazon and Cacace, asking them to play with me.

I’m proud to say that I do more strength training than anyone else,” said Ito, who has hired a personal chef to take care of his nutrition.

On his way back

At the end of September 2020, Stan Van Dessel, who had been selected a few times for the A-core in the 19-20 season, had brutal bad luck. He suffered a serious injury: his kneecap was completely dislocated. We went to see Stan to see how his recovery was going.

4 months out!

He sustained his injury in a race with the B-team. The doctors tell him after a thorough analysis that he will only be 100% fit again after about 4 months. A deadline that seems a long way off for a guy full of energy. But Stan also has an unparalleled self-discipline that will allow him to get through these 4 months just fine.

“I told myself it could have been worse, I could have torn my ACL. Then I would have been inactive for 7-8 months. Very few players come back 100% after an injury like that,” he put into perspective.

His injury did not require surgery. Fortunately, his kneecap returned to its original position after a few manipulations. For the first three weeks, he had to wear a sturdy brace to keep his leg straight, which allowed his kneecap to stabilize back in its original position. This was followed by long months of rehabilitation to first walk and then run again.

Thanks to the club’s kinés, Pär and Wouter, who did an excellent job with him and supported him throughout his recovery, Stan is almost 100% recovered. The doctors estimate that he will be fully ready to play again by mid-January. A blessing for Stan who was tired of not being able to touch a ball.

Feeling the ball

“When you’re a soccer player, you like to play, that’s your life. What I really missed the most during my recovery was the ball contact. Now I’m slowly starting to train with the ball again, but always without contact.”

In any case, his ambitions have never diminished. After a few years at OHL, he moved to Sint-Truiden 4 years ago and also signed his first professional contract there. “I come from Aarschot, near Leuven, but it was STVV that gave me my first professional opportunities, for which I am very grateful. I just want to come back to play again and hopefully one day play regularly at Stayen. For the rest of my career, we’ll see where the wind takes me, but first I need to focus here.”

After making five appearances with the pros last year, you’d think he was hoping to break through, but Stan is keeping his feet on the ground. “I’ve had a few chances to play, but it was mostly in place of players who were injured or transferred. The coach did tell me I deserved to play, so I was happy. I’m still only 18 years old. I hope that one day I will have the chance to play again and to show my talent”.

Stan has not yet had a chance to talk to the new coach about his situation, but he has already received instructions from physical coach Stefan Winters.

lon polleunis Without doubt the best STVV player ever: Lon Polleunis “Obviously, winning the Golden Shoe is my most beautiful trophy”

Lon, officially Odillon, Polleunis, born on May 1, 1943, followed in the footsteps of his father Toine and uncle Dor and celebrated his debut in the first team at the age of 19. Lon played a total of 286 matches for STVV and scored 89 goals. Together with Roger Maes, he is the Kanaries’ all-time topscorer. The highlight with the Kanaries was the 1965-1966 season in which he became vice-champion with STVV. In June 1973, Polleunis left for the ambitious RWDM with whom he became national champion in the 1974-1975 season and also played in 5 European matches. Lon ended his career at SK Tongeren in 1977 and was also trainer of STVV in the 1991-1992 season.

With the help of ten dates, Lon takes us through his rich soccer career.

November 11, 1962: STVV - Gantoise 3-1

“That was on the 9th match day in the 1962-1963 season. My first game as a base player and in it I scored the second goal after a scramble in front of goal, I remember. At that time, it was not so obvious to be selected into the team as I was doing my military service at the time and could hardly train with the group in the first round. Thanks to chaplain Schalenbourg I was available for STVV during the weekend and trainer Goethals made no problem of it, fortunately!”

October 3, 1965: STVV - Anderlecht 2-0

“This was undoubtedly the top match in the history of the club. Really a lot of people at Stayen, allegedly 22,000 spectators but who could count! The supporters were glued to the sidelines and the match should never have taken place. Referee Loraux realized that he could not cancel the game for safety reasons. There were only 2 police officers present at Stayen but everything went serenely without accidents.”

April 30, 1966: Spain - STVV 5-1

“We had played a great season and that didn’t go unnoticed in the rest of the world. In preparation for the World Cup in England, Spain invited us to Zaragoza for a friendly match. A fantastic experience! In sporting terms, things were slightly different. Apparently the Spanish linesmen had no idea about our offside strategy. A few goals were scored offside but that could not spoil the fun. Another nice anecdote: since the timing of the game was brought forward at the last minute, some supporters’ busses missed the game but that couldn’t spoil the fun.”

April 7, 1968: Netherlands - Belgium 1-2

“I will never forget my first game as a Red Devil. It was a great honor that I was selected together with Jean Dockx of Racing White from a small team like STVV. Moreover, I scored the first goal from a free kick in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam.

Actually, Van Himst was marked but I didn’t let him and kicked the ball wonderfully into the goal.”

December 18, 1968: Golden Shoe

“I learned through Pol Jacquemin, then editor-in-chief of the Nieuwsblad, a few days before that I had won the Golden Shoe with a big lead over Semmeling and Dockx. At that time, it was still one vote and a real gala ball at the award ceremony as it is now did not exist. It was only a small tribute by the organizing newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws but it is my best trophy ever.”

October 9, 1968: Belgium - Finland 6-1

“In this match in the group stage for the World Cup I scored my first hat-trick for the Red Devils. Later (May 10, 1972) I also managed to score three times against Iceland (4-0). Only 7 countrymen also managed a double hat-trick, the last one was Lukaku. In the league I also scored 3 times: at Daring Brussels (1-4 April 16, 1967) and at home against Racing White 4-2 (12 May 1968). However, I was not a striker but an attacking midfielder. I enjoyed just as much a nice cross that resulted in a goal. The collective has always impressed me.”

May 8, 1970: transfer to Valencia

“Although I had several agreements with Standard for a transfer, the STVV board refused my transfer each time. Afterwards, in the run-up to the World Cup in Mexico, a delegation from Valencia came to see me in our isolation hotel in Oostende.

I could sign a five-year lucrative contract. My father Toine, however, was not in favour of a foreign adventure. So, I stayed with STVV which of course was a missed opportunity, not only sport wise but also financially.”

June 11, 1970: Mexico - Belgium 1-0

“In the group stage for the World Cup in Mexico, we had eliminated top countries such as Spain and Yugoslavia and we went to South America with great ambition. Together with Devrindt I had been top marksman in that group phase, but in the first game against El Salvador we were on the bench together. Goethals came to tell us the same day that the technical staff of the Football Association, including Roosen of Anderlecht and Petit of Standard, had decided so. In Mexico City, we were eliminated by the host country after a light penalty kick. That early elimination was a disappointment because there was much more to it.”

May 16, 1971: Beerschot - STVV 2-1

“That day for myself is the biggest disappointment of my career. We didn’t play the cup final with our strongest team because goalkeeper Bosmans was busy with a transfer to Waregem and the board distrusted Leon, who was excluded from the selection. I never understood that decision. STVV was actually the better team at De Heizel but we suffered an undeserved defeat. That defeat stayed with me for weeks and I still don’t like to be reminded of it.”

June 14, 1972: West Germany - Belgium 2-1

“This was the semi-final of the European Championship in 1972 at the Bosuil. I myself was not in the starting line-up because Goethals opted for Martens for a real sound defender. In the middle of the second half, I could replace him and scored a nice goal. At that time West Germany had the best team in the world with stars like Beckenbauer, Netzer, Overaht and Müller.”

“The appointment of Peter Maes as head coach is the right choice”.

With three victories in a row in December, Peter Maes managed to lead the Canaries to safer grounds for the time being. “Finally, I would dare to say,” says Polleunis. “Peter Maes is the right man to get STVV out of the relegation zone. The team played the last months without backbone. Now there is a team on the pitch again. You can’t deny that Peter values organization and discipline highly. This will also benefit the uniqueness of the club. The supporters will not be unmoved by this. Like me, they are very happy with the new technical staff, which is once again of Limburg colors. Yes, I still have a few tips for the board. Put even more effort into youth work, don’t let the best talents leave and give the most promising youngsters a chance to play. I also see that more than 15 players with an STVV past are playing in the first division A. I would have liked to have seen one of them. I would have liked to see at least five of those at STVV. Last but not least, the focus should be on reinforcements from Haspengouw and quality prevails over quantity because the core is now too large. I see a brighter future in the new year.”

On December 24, a promising documentary series started on the STVV club channels. Every day 27 employees work behind the scenes at STVV. This documentary series exposes what the ins and outs of life at STVV literally means for the staff. The first episode focuses on the material men, or should I say legends, Benjamin “Benny” Libens and Valère Stevens. The new series can be viewed in full via our club channels. Tune in!

E-sporter ZayroR began the Proximus E-Pro League in top form.

After two days of play, ZayroR still has the maximum of points. The turbulent opening game against K. Beerschot V.A. had to be replayed due to a faulty internet connection by the opposing team. ZayroR could easily finish the job during the catch-up match. 4-0 was the final verdict. Also against last year’s champion at Mouscron, now transferred to Standard Liege, ZayroR was able to win. It was an exciting battle but in the end our talented e-sportsman won with 3-4 against ShadooW.
