Feed the duck

Duckens Nazon, the sensation of November.

With 4 goals in his last 4 games, Nazon has put a smile on the faces of our supporters. Some fans even dared to say on social media that he almost managed to make them forget about Yohan Boli. We went to interview our Haitian international. He has come a long way, but always kept his ambition and his will to win.

Where does he come from?

Duckens was born and raised in the Parisian suburbs, more specifically in Poissy. Both his parents are originally from Haiti and immigrated to France before Nazon was born. As the youngest of four siblings, his father gave him a typical Haitian first name so that he would never forget his origins. Moreover, his parents talk to him in Creole at home and cook typical Haitian dishes for him, despite the fact that he never had the chance to go on vacation there (until he was a professional).

A real international star

After spending a few years in the training center in Vannes, he signed his first professional contract in the Stade Lavallois (L2). And then, against all odds, he went to India at the age of 22, for the first time on a trip outside France. “India was the best experience of my career, both for soccer and for human contacts. I learned a lot about myself and my adaptability”.

He then went to Wolverhampton in the English Championship, but was loaned out to Coventry City and then to Oldham Athletic, where he had a couple of good seasons. In 2018 he arrived in Sint-Truiden, just six months after scoring a brace against Japan. Coincidence?

Anyway, with all those countries to his name, Nazon is a real international star. More than 400,000 people follow him on instagram. From Paris to Sint-Truiden, via Coventry in England and Kochi in India, to Port-Au-Prince in Haiti, his followers love him!

Seleksyon nasyonal (national selection in Haitian Creole)

With his dual nationality, French and Haitian, Nazon was eligible for both selections. He chose the Haitian national team and is very satisfied with it. “It really helped me to discover the country where my parents grew up. It is strange to see that they grew up in such an environment. It is true that there is a lot of violence and poverty, but you also get a super warm welcome that you only find in less wealthy countries”.

And the fact that he speaks Creole naturally helps him to integrate perfectly into the group. “The national team is more than a team to me, it’s a family. The difference with a club is that you see the same people every time you go back to the national team. With a club the team can change completely after a season or you can change clubs yourself”.

And then there is the financial aspect. “Of course the club is my livelihood, I go there like everyone else who goes to work. So even if there’s a good atmosphere in the group, we go there to work. In the national team, we play to represent our country and keep the colors of the flag high”.

In any case, his 42 caps and 19 goals have brought a lot of joy to the whole nation and he dreams of results in big tournaments.

“We have a great generation and a dangerous team. We can only get better. So I am happy to contribute to so much happiness for the fans of the national team”.

In the meantime, we hope he continues on his current path to contribute to the happiness of our Sint-Truiden fans. As his fans so beautifully say “Feed the duck and he will score”.

Schmidt Daniel owns GK’s online community, Game Changer. If you visit the website, you’ll see that it says: “Let’s get together, goalkeeper families. Let’s unite as a Japanese keeper family and improve the impression of goalkeepers”.

Is the image of goalkeepers in Japan not good?

‘Compared to Europe, there aren’t many kids in Japan who want to play as a goalie. There are some Japanese field players who have played in big clubs, however there are still no Japanese goalkeepers who are involved in the Champions League.

If there are many young kids think ‘I want to be a goalkeeper, the competition for goalkeeper will become even tougher and the foundation of Japan’s goalkeeper level will be raised, that is why I started this community Schmidt’s profile is unique. He started playing football in the second grade of primary school and played as a defensive midfielder. At Tohokugakuin Junior High School, he quit the football club after losing the ball to an amateur and joined the volleyball club. A few months later, he returned to the team and switched to goalkeeper because of his volleyball experience.

‘Was it a shock for him to lose the ball to an “amateur footballer”?

‘Yes. The field got bigger when I went from primary school to junior high school. I didn’t have the stamina and it was hard for me to run and I was like, ‘I hate it. Just as I was thinking ‘I’m at the end of my footballing days’, an amateur stole the ball from me and that was the deciding factor for me to quit the football club and join the volleyball club.

At this point, the coach of the football club said to Schmidt, “You’ll probably come back to the football club. You can come back whenever you want.”

I knew I enjoyed playing football more than volleyball. Graciously, the coach allowed me to come back.

Life is strange, because the man who once failed at football, “I became a goalkeeper so I wouldn’t have to run,” says Schmidt, has now played for the national team. But the fact that he was trained as a midfielder for so long contributed to Schmidt’s strong point - his ability to build up. But when he moved to STVV, his then-manager, Marc Brys (now OHL), placed even higher demands on Schmidt in terms of his build-up.

‘Kenny (Steppe) got injured and I started playing (from August 2019, against Club Brugge). Kenny was a goalkeeper who had fulfilled the manager’s demands, so I think the feeling was ‘I need to be able to do the same thing’.

For example, the moment an opponent’s central midfielder gets in front, if the keeper is able to deliver the ball into the space between him and the opposition defensive line, it will lead to a scoring opportunity. On the other hand, if the ball is stolen by the opposition, they are in danger for a counter.

“I got used to it at the training sessions by Marc repeatedly saying ‘pass it through here’ and ‘put it out there’. That’s what I learned from Marc Brys After joining STVV, Schmidt defended STVV’s goal in 22 consecutive games, but he was injured during a winter training camp in January 2019. Steppe then became the regular stopper, but this time Kenny got a minor injury in late October.

Schmidt returned to action for the first time in 10 months in Japan’s match against Ivory Coast (1-0) and then played in STVVV’s match against Standard Liegel (2-0) on 25 October.

He said: “I went into the game very much in high spirits, I was more nervous about the Standard game than the national team game. I was happy to contribute to the victory against a strong opponent without conceding a goal, which was a good thing.

The competition between Schmidt and Steppe, which is hard to beat, is also about improving each other. Schmidt speaks with respect for his rival.

‘Kenny is the spiritual pillar of the team. His kicks are very accurate, his saves are ‘extended’ and he moves very quickly. He played in the Dutch league in the past (Heerenveen. He won the Dutch Cup), made the U21 Belgium national team and won the best goalkeeper award in the Belgian league in the 2007-08 season. To be able to compete like this with someone like Kenny is a great thing for my keeper career.

But in terms of height, Schmidt should be more confident.

‘That has to be my strength as long as I have this height (197cm). I think I was able to show my strengths against Standard.

When I handle high balls and crosses, my teammates compliment me as ‘helpful’ and the coaches have demanded that I go out for the high ball, so I want to live up to their expectations.

Benny and Valère: our material men inspire respect.

Benny and Valère breathe, eat and drink football. They are the material masters or material men of STVV. Benny Liebens, 61, and Valère Stevens, 70.

Before and after each match, they put everything in order in the locker room.

They know when to shut up and when to celebrate.

Nationally, they became known thanks to a picture of a dressing room after an away game. Everything was clean and tidy … an example.

Valere: “It makes me proud to leave a dressing room clean. I have been doing that for 30 years. That inspires respect everywhere. I recently received a compliment from Yuma Suzuki, he thanked me for so much dedication”.

Between the players

Valère works halftime for the club, Benny two days a week.

Benny: “On game days, we pack all the equipment, both for home and away. We leave from the Sint-Jansstraat, the training center. The players need a lot more now. They used to only need a sweatshirt, shorts, stockings and training pants. Now there are 3 more undershirts, at halftime, they change jerseys and shorts, stockings are cut to put on tennis socks underneath.”

Valère: “At 6 am, I arrive first at the training complex. I have to check everything, turn on the washing machine, give clothes to the players and receive suppliers.

The days fly by.”

Football, football, football

Both men also have a past in football.

Valère : “I have been goalkeeper for many years with Rapid Schulen, then in second and third provincial. Since six years, I have been active at STVV. Before that, I worked at clubs like Diest and Lommel.”

Benny: “I played football at one club, GS Mopertingen. I played 500 games there, right back or libero. In 1994, I joined the first team as a material master. I have been an uninterrupted material master for 17 years. In that time, I did the warming up of the reserves as a goalkeeper. Valère Stevens was an old acquaintance of mine, he worked for Lierse. Valère is a crack in his profession. We can work together without a lot of words.”

Always ready

What qualities should a material man have?

Valère: “He should always be ready for the boys. He has to spoil them, his work is his hobby. And he must have an understanding wife!”

Benny: “He must be able to remain silent and if we win, he must be able to sing.”

Benny is also known for his extensive collection of shirts.

“I now have almost 800 of them, out of all the big players. I got the Cruyff and Messi shirts out of their own hands.”

Johnny Lucas Flora Barbosa has adapted to Belgian soccer

“Keep working hard for new playing opportunities”

The transition of Johnny Lucas, from Brazilian seria B Parana to STVV, took a long time last year, but was finally settled at the end of August 2019. One year later, the Brazilian youth international (U-20), who signed a five-year contract at Stayen, not only looks back on his sporting achievements but also makes a comparison between the two cultures.

How did he adapt to life here in Europe?

“Of course, things didn’t work out so well in the beginning because I missed my family and certainly my mother (Flora) and my older brother Gean. My father (Barbosa) unfortunately already passed away. I had to get used to the cold temperatures and also to the European culture. In Brazil everything is more vibrant and exuberant. But thanks to my South Korean teammate Lee, who speaks excellent Spanish with me because of his past at FC Barcelona, I feel much better in my skin”.

A comparison between the two football countries is difficult, isn’t it?

“You can say that. In Brazil, the emphasis is mainly on the technical side. Here they play harder and the intensity is also higher.

For me, it was mainly getting used to the speed of execution. I’ve made a big step in that direction over the last few months”.

Athletically it could also be better, we think?

“That’s right too. In the first six games of the current season, I was always featured in the squad selection and got a lot of playing minutes. Now it’s harder to win a selection again. I don’t know what happened really but I can only keep on working hard during trainings and wait for the next opportunity”.

What does the future hold for you?

“Of course, I hope for more playing minutes so I can play in the spotlight. I can see that coming, because the adaptation to European football is getting better and better. Playing faster is a must for me. I have understood that message well. But no, a larger European football country does not resonate with me. My ambition is to develop myself further at STVV because it is a fun and pleasant club”.

What about the end of the year, is a family visit possible?

“I do believe that we will get a few days off, but because of the corona crisis you can’t plan anything yet. The parties at Christmas and New Year are really fun and are celebrated exuberantly like during the Carnival period. There are a lot of people in the streets”.

One last question, what do you like here?

“Give me waffles and chocolate but actually there’s not such a big difference in eating culture. Fries are also known to us as patatas bravas. In the region I come from, Parana, which is in the south of Brazil, is mainly churrasco, a kind of brazilian barbecue, a typical dish just like barreado which is a stew of beef stewed in a pot with rice, banana and orange. And apetizers are especially popular with us: coxinha, a chicken croquette, pao de queijo, a kind of cheese bread and empadas which are small pastries with chicken or shrimp”.

“Thanks to STVV, I’ve become the player I am today”

Samy Mmaee plays for the third season in a row in the yellow-blue shirt.

The Belgian defender, with both Moroccan and Cameroonian roots, made the switch from Standard in June 2018. Mmaee has been a fixed asset on the Truiense squad for quite some time now and that attracted the attention of Moroccan national coach, Halilhodžić, who selected the defender for the Moroccan national team. We interview the canary and brand new “Lion of the Atlas” about his career so far and his ambitions for the future.

As the Belgian son of a Cameroonian father and Moroccan mother, Mmaee had several options when it came to international soccer. “Right, I could just as well have played for Belgium or Cameroon. But I chose Morocco. A choice of the heart, because I am very close to my mother. What’s more, their project appealed to me the most.

Morocco has a very good national team, one of the best in Africa. It’s a great honour to be part of it and to play and perform effectively there,” the defender glows.

On October 9th, Mmaee made his debut in a friendly interstate against Senegal. Immediately a starting place.

At the end of November, he reappeared in a qualifier for the Africa Cup, against the Central African Republic.

“It’s always something special. You play together with world class players. Ziyech from Chelsea and Hakimi from Inter, to name but two. When you train with them, you see the hard work behind their success and it’s inspiring.

You learn a lot from it. By the way, they are all great people. They just come to chill with you. Everyone treats each other in a friendly way, it’s like a family atmosphere”.

Mmaee has come a long way to be where he is today. “I started at a small village club, KV Zuun. My brothers and I were discovered there by FC Brussels. Five years later my three brothers and I moved to AA Gent. Then Standard came and I went with my two youngest brothers to Sclessin, where I made my first class debut. After a season on loan at MVV, STVV took me over from Standard on a free transfer. My first season in Sint-Truiden was a difficult year for me, with little room to play. I only came into action towards the end. The season after that went a lot better and I took my place. I sometimes played as a defensive midfielder, although I prefer a spot in the middle of the back”.

Also this season Mmaee collected a lot of playing minutes and that while the places in the defense are expensive. “The coach indeed has a lot of choice this season. I think that is only positive. Everybody gets better from that healthy competition. We had a difficult start to the season and then it is not illogical that the coach also tries other options. I think I’ve always guarded my man and they have seen that in Morocco, otherwise I wouldn’t have been selected. My current playing situation is a bit special, when I was in the starting eleven at STVV, I didn’t play for Morocco and now that I do play for the national team, I don’t always start at Sint-Truiden. But that’s football, you know. It can all change quickly.”

After more than two seasons, STVV has captured a special place in the heart of the defender. “STVV is a family club and we’ve always had a good group. It will always be a special club for me. I took my first steps here as a pro and learned a lot. Without STVV I would never have been selected for the national team. It is thanks to this club that I have become the player I am today”.

The results so far have been a bit disappointing. But Mmaee is not giving up. “We have to see game by game and get points. Especially at home we can’t lose points. Also outside the home we have to fight to get away from the bottom of the rankings as fast as possible. We want to be able to look forward and I also think we have the quality for that. Furthermore, I prefer not to talk too much about ambitions. On a personal level I dream of playing in the Africa Cup. I would even dare to call it a goal. We are already qualified, so that’s a good thing.

Also participating in a World Cup would be fantastic”, concludes Mmaee.

We are happy to see a young goalkeeper like WIM VANMARSENILLE, from our own region and from our own youth training, move on to the A-core. And there are more to come.

Wim is only 18 and last summer he signed a professional contract. He is now the third goalkeeper at the big canaries. Very interesting fact: he was born in Sint-Truiden and lives in Landen. Wim: “My whole family has been a supporter of STVV for years. I feel completely at home at Stayen. I can still make progress, that’s why I train every day, especially to practice my left foot. My strong point is my footwork, I like to play football. Our goalkeepers trainer also wants me to be on my feet and anticipate”.

That goalkeepers trainer is Jürgen De Braekeleer. Jürgen: “We are all on the same line, our starting point is proactive goalkeeping. They have to anticipate situations and only react to the goal line as a last resort. The goalkeeper is the first attacker, he has to support the field players, lead and coach”.

Keo, Arno and Bruno

STVV has received a high score for its youth training for several years now. This is made even more evident when you see the calls for the various national selections, among other things. Parents and young players choose an education at STVV. COO Bob Magottaux and technical director Jelle Van Camp set out the lines, with great success. Daniël Cuypers is goalkeepers trainer for the maxi structure, Gert Boesmans and Christian Wijnrocx for the mini structure.

Daniël Cuypers: “Learning to work under pressure and getting them out of the comfort zone are important challenges. That’s why we are shifting them on time to an older age group. Hard work is paramount and a personal approach makes the training fascinating. Growing the young goalkeepers to the A-core is a priority for me.

This way, they quickly get a taste of the pace. It is also a must for me to get the third goalie out of our own youth system. Every trainer hopes to get a number 1 goalie at some point as well”.

Wim Vanmarsenille is followed by three more goalkeeper talents.

Keo Boets

Keo has only just turned 17, he lives in Tessenderlo and plays with the second team.

Keo: “My ambition is to become a pro in the first team. I am now 1m87 and according to measurements I can grow up to 1m97. A modern goalkeeper has to know how to play football. I pay attention to that. I am also strong in 1 on 1 situations. Truienaar Simon Mignolet is of course an example to follow”.

Arno Smeyers

Arno is 16 and plays with the U18. He played with Hasselt until he was 13 years old.

Another young talent from our own region.

Arno: “I train 5 times a week and can still combine it with the school, I am in the 5th year of secondary education. According to a bone scan I can grow up to 1m90. Of course I look at Steppe and Schmidt to learn more”.

Bruno Boudry

Bruno is the fourth in line. He lives in the surroundings of Hannuit. He is also only 16 and plays at the U18.

Bruno: “I had bad luck, I have been inactive for 6 months due to a shoulder injury. But I remain ambitious, I will definitely come back. I will continue to combine soccer with school.

Talking about workpoints

Daniël Cuypers is proud that his pupils, like Wim, can continue to grow. “With Keo, the next one is at the door, who still has some time, given his age. Arno is 16 and in principle still U18, but he is also making very nice progress and is doing well at the moment. He got to the core due to injuries from the A-core goalkeepers and can continue to train with Keo at the moment. Bruno also U18, unfortunately has some bad luck this year due to an injury to the shoulder and will have to undergo surgery, but he is also a talented goalkeeper”.

Jürgen: “I have regular discussions with Daniël about the final touches that need to be made to get through to the A-team. These young goalkeepers certainly have opportunities, otherwise they wouldn’t be training with the A-team on a regular basis”.

Powerhouse and school

I get in contact with trainers from other countries on a regular basis. In England, the training sessions in the strength centre have been well established for years. Daniel Cuypers concludes. “It is super important that they can make the combination with school. Keo, Arno and Bruno are at a top sports school and that is how it is possible to combine them.

I certainly pay attention to their studies, and if someone wipes his feet at school, I talk to him directly. The school is always taken into account when hiring a goalkeeper for the second team or the A-team”.

The new competition dates are known!

The pandemic shook up the entire game calendar. The games that couldn’t be played and cupgames were moved according to the health of the teams. Discover the entire adjusted competition calendar at stvv.com.

STVV also competes in the 16th finals of the Croky Cup. We play against SC-Lokeren-Temse on January 9 2021.

Support from home action

The chants of a yellow-blue legion, a fresh beer after a satisfying victory, the increase in heart rate in the nailbiting last minutes of a top match. We all miss it badly as hard. Nevertheless, we like to maintain and expand the connection between club and supporters. For the time being this is only possible digitally. For example, STVV launched a “Support From Home” action where fans could share their home experience of an exciting Lumburgse Derby with the STVV community.
