Kenny Steppe pays attention to the details

Kenny Steppe. Quick reflexes, clear overview, good feet. He has set himself up as a fixed asset in the goals of STVV. He even became captain after the injury of Steve De Ridder.

Last season, he had bad luck with a contracted injury from September to New Year. And this year, there was the corona crisis, but he managed through it, as did all the Canaries.

Kenny is now 31 years old but in the goalkeeping world, he is still young. And therefore, STVV has extended his contract.

In front of us is a self-confident, experienced goalkeeper who has just completed a strength training.

Goalkeeper training is much more extensive now than it was 10 years ago, Kenny acknowledges. « You used to have a head coach, a T2 and a goalkeeper trainer. Now you have a staff of at least five, with a physical trainer and video analyst. Just as a goalkeeper trainer feels normal, you could also have a striker trainer now. This already happens in many big clubs. »

Playing football

There is a constant evolution in the training approach. Also for goalkeepers. Take, for example, building up from the defense. In the last few years, the goalkeeper has become the first option to start the attack. Kicking the ball far away is no longer an option. “We play on ball possession, that philosophy starts with the goalkeeper.

Sometimes there are risks involved. We have to assess how we defend ourselves, preferably without losing the ball, of course. » Modern goalkeepers must have excellent feet technique. Kenny can easily send clean balls over 30, 40 meters. « We practice heavily on this during the week. Only kick balls to improve the technique. 100 times in a row if necessary. Do you know where I learned a lot? When I played at Heerenveen, I was hurt with a broken wrist for a long time. Marco Van Basten was the trainer there at the time and he let me train and play on field positions with the reserve team. That’s where I was able to work on my feet technique. »

Video analysis

Kenny played 5 seasons at Heerenveen. He started with Beerschot. After Heerenveen, Beveren, then Zulte Waregem and now he has started his fourth season with STVV. He has also won some trophies, including the Dutch and Belgian Cup. In 2008, he was elected goalkeeper of the year when playing for Beerschot. This gives him his place among the best goalkeepers in Belgium.

A good preparation is not only jumping, diving, kicking out. Video analysis is indispensable. The opponent is, so to speak, completely undressed, all details are studied.

Kenny: “That is important with free kicks and of course with penalty kicks. Which angle should you choose?

Some players vary, others don’t. And then you see more and more that they shoot in the middle of the goal.

Even with video it is very difficult to estimate. »

And lastly, there is only room for one goalkeeper. You cannot make a mistake or you fly to the bench. Staying alert is the message. « I have one rule. As a second goalkeeper, you have to give 100%. As the first goalkeeper, you have to think like the second goalkeeper. »

Who is Kevin Muscat?

After a successful career as player, playing in the Premier League and also with a few international caps, Kevin Muscat has been for the last 10 years, coaching. First as an assistant and then as a coach for Melbourne Victory in the Australia A-League. But the successful coach wanted a new challenge. “Everything was telling me that I wanted to challenge myself and get a fresh start”.

So, he went to London to learn, meet people and shake hands, hoping that the right opportunity would fall. When eventually, a representative from STVV called him to speak about an opportunity. “Everything went very fast. We had 3 meetings in 7 or 8 days with the board of STVV and we shared the same vision on the way of playing football but we also all understood that it would take a little bit to change the culture to that style of football”. But things weren’t as simple as they seem. The road to coaching at STVV was long. Mainly because of the problems of equivalency of diplomas. The UEFA only recognizes UEFA certificates. The Club and the coach showed some patience and while working as a Technical Advisor for the Club, Muscat completed his license to coach in Belgium.

Australia vs Belgium

Does he ever want to coach the national team? Of course, he does, but Muscat is very downto-earth. “If it ever comes, I’d be very honoured to represent my country, but you shouldn’t be looking at the horizon or you’ll miss what’s in front of you”. The Australian coach is the only Australian head coach for a men’s team in Europe. “It’s something I’ve never really given much thought. It’s just an opportunity I’ve worked hard for”. And speaking of working hard, Muscat has always done. A work ethic that he learnt from his father, who immigrated from England when Kevin was young. “Whether it’s playing football, managing, being an accountant or a baker, of course you need a good set of skills to be the best, but in my eyes, it’s the work ethic that makes the difference. I surround myself with people of like-minded traits, from the coaching staff to the players”.

Coaching at STVV

“There’s no point in me telling you how I baked the cake because you’re going to taste it and make your own mind.” He wants to make it evident to people on the pitch. And he’s very aware that it’s a long process. Especially with such a diverse group. Which is something he sees as very positive. “Sharing different cultures, upbringings, philosophies, ways to work, it’s always good for a team. And even though you naturally gravitate to people who speak the same language, it’s not an issue. What’s important is that there is enough integration to create a certain team spirit that is evident on the pitch. And I’ve seen an increase in camaraderie in the group.” And the coaching staff tries to be creative in the way they communicate to the players to make sure that the message goes through.

When asked who his role models are. “It’s got to be someone you’re friends with so you can discuss with him and ask questions” Muscat says. Alongside some coaches that are close to him, he also talks about his father who never coached in football, but “if you have a family, you’re coaching too so he’s a very big influence on me too”. Unfortunately, the whole Muscat family is not united. The coach has just missed his daughter’s 21st birthday. And although he doesn’t miss his family, thanks to the new technologies, he feels sad to miss all of those milestones. Kevin can count here in Belgium on his partner but also on the good group of coaches that he has around him. They’ve all really became friends very quickly. They all have each other’s back.

On Sunday, September 6 the new season for our G-footballers started at Stayen with the (virtual) Football kick off. Our 3 G-teams (kids, level 3 and level 4) were welcomed by Chris Durkin. During practice, the teams were reinforced by Binkie, who also handed out the medals afterwards. The club wishes every player success and fun on and off the field!

Liberato Cacace brings a piece of New Zealand and Italy to Haspengouw

Liberato Cacace is regarded as one of the greatest football talents in New Zealand. The left back went through all the youth series of the national team and despite his young age (19) already collected three caps for the Kiwis.

After a fantastic season at his previous club, Wellington Phoenix FC, Cacace signed a three-year contract at Stayen. We talked with ‘Libby’ about his transfer to Sint-Truiden, expectations for this season and dreams for the future.

First of all, who is Liberato Cacace?

The name Cacace may not immediately remind you of the distant Oceania, although you don’t have to look long for an explanation. “I was born in New Zealand and I also have an Italian background”, says Libby. “Both my parents are Italian. That made my transfer to STVV a bit easier, because I have an Italian passport as well as a New Zealand one. I grew up in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.

Through the academy of Wellington Phoenix, I moved on to the first team, where I played almost 60 matches in three years. Quite a lot for a 19-year-old”, Cacace laughs.

How strong is your bond with Italy?

In addition to English, of course, the world citizen also speaks a little Italian. “I understand Italian and speak it a little. That’s a good thing, you know, because there are some players at STVV who speak Italian. Santiago (Colombatto), Pol (Garcia), ... especially the Spanish-speaking boys. My bond with Italy is strong. In Wellington my parents run the Italian restaurant ‘La Bella Italia’, where I used to work.

And then of course there is football. I’ve been following Italian football almost all my life and hope one day to play Seria A myself. Preferably with Napoli, where my family comes from”, Libby dreams out loud. Who knows, he might still run into Dries Mertens there. “It’s going to have to go fast then, because he’s getting older by the day. I have always enjoyed Dries Mertens’ game. Great player.”

Another player Cacace is looking up to is Francesco Totti. “My first memories of him date back to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. I loved his playing style as a midfielder. I even copied his celebration even when I scored in Australia,” says Cacace, sucking his thumb demonstratively. “Later I also admired defenders like Maldini and Cannavaro. Italians are known as the best defenders in the world for a reason. Today’s defenders such as Chiellini and Bonucci are getting older, hopefully they will have equally talented successors”.

What are your ambitions?

From Italy, we return to Sint Truiden. We already looked at Cacace’s ambitions. “I want to take as many minutes as possible and stand in front of the team and the fans. We have a good group, with a lot of talent, so I think we can achieve something special. The results are a bit disappointing, but we can certainly reverse it”. Libby prefers to describe himself as an offensive back. “I like to jolt along, I’m offensive and a dribble doesn’t scare me either”, he sounds self-assured. “During practice matches with Suzuki and Lee. Their style of play fits in well with mine, so I look forward to being on the field with them”.

What do you do next to the field?

Next to the field, the Italian New Zealander is gradually getting used to life in Sint-Truiden. “I’ve been here for almost a month now and what strikes me is that everything is quiet here. It’s not a big city and you see a lot of old people there. In that respect the city does differ from Wellington, where I come from. But I like it that way. That way I can concentrate fully on football. Furthermore, I haven’t had much time to explore Belgium. I underwent a COVID test in Brussels, I liked what I saw there. Maybe I’ll go back on a day off. Leuven would also be worthwhile. Soon I will have a car at my disposal, that will offer some extra possibilities”.

The coronavirus, on the other hand, makes travelling a lot more difficult. “My family hasn’t been able to visit yet. They would like to visit me but it is a difficult situation right now. I wouldn’t want them to become ill by travelling. Maybe around Christmas or as soon as the pandemic loses its strength.

Fortunately, today there are social media and alternatives such as FaceTime. I don’t feel homesick at all,” Libby reassures us.

One of our summer recruits, Maximiliano Caufriez

After 3 weeks of training Maximiliano Caufriez, one of our summer recruits, will soon be able to make his debut in our yellow-blue shirt. From Pâturage, a small club near Mons, via Mons, then Anderlecht and Standard as a youngster, Maximiliano has always been driven by a love of football. A love that clearly comes from his father, who was a professional football player himself but unfortunately had to break off his career after a car accident.

Who is Maximiliano Caufriez?

He played at Waasland-Beveren for five years and now hopes to have a positive influence on STVV’s defense.

For those who don’t know him : Maximiliano is a central defender who is aggressive on the ball, like a Pepe, one of his idols. But he is technically good enough to build from the back, like a Ramos or a Tiago Silva, two of his other models. This fits well with the current coaching philosophy.

Why did you choose STVV?

In fact, it was the coaching staff that convinced him to sign with STVV. Despite the offers to play in Seria A (Italy), one of the competitions he has dreamed of, Max was convinced by the structure of our club and the long-term project. “Sint Truiden is a club that is always trying to improve,” he says with a satisfied look.

How is the integration into the team?

His integration into the team went very quickly. He already knew Jonathan Buatu, his former teammate at Beveren and Samy Maee whom he met at Standard’s youth school. But the whole team welcomed him with open arms. And even though several players are playing in the same position as him, Maximiliano sees it positively. “It’s always more difficult to give 100 percent for each training session if you know you will be automatically selected the next weekend,” he says. “So for me it’s about healthy competition to make sure everyone gives 100% at all times”.

What do you do in your free time?

Outside the field, Max spends a lot of time with his wife and son. “There are so many training sessions and competitions that it’s really important to be able to enjoy my family to the fullest.” Well, like any other player, Max has a number of passions, especially motor sports ... which, unfortunately, he can’t practice but likes to watch here and there.

What are your memories from Stayen?

Max remembers his games against STVV: “It has always been a difficult team to play against. Especially at Stayen, because when the fans are behind the team, the atmosphere is very enthusiastic. And then playing against players like Ito or Suzuki who are quite unpredictable and technically good, it wasn’t always easy.”

albert haesen looking back at our yellow-blue heroes from the past

Albert Haesen wrote history in 1938 with the first professional contract with Beerschot Albert Haesen, born on December 31st, 1917 in Sint-Truiden, enjoyed his youth training with STVV and made his debut as a 16 year old in the first team. In 1938, Berke hit us all with astonishment by signing a professional contract with the, at that time, absolute top club in our country, Beerschot.

“Of course, at that time it was not easy to make the switch from a club from promotion (now 1st amateur) to the first division,” his son Ivan Haesen opens the conversation. “Albert was one of the most attacking backs of that period and had an amazing head game with an unbridled fighting spirit. His fast rushes and nice positional play were also his strenghts”.

Raymond Braine

At that time, Raymond Braine, at Beerschot, was the best football player in Belgium. Raymond was a gifted technician, Red Devil and just back from a periode as a pro at Sparta Prague. “The training invariably ended with a matchup between attack and defence,” Ivan testifies through conversations from the past. “After only a few weeks Albert dared to defend near Braine. As a young Haspengouwer, he was totally ignored by the Antwerp striker. With a few successful tackles my father managed to get the ball of out his feet several times and this to the great joy of the coach. Albert heard him say after a training session: “Well coach, I believe that the small fat will become a good back but you have to tell him to not go so hard on me.”

War

Haesen would only be active on the Kiel for one season. World War II broke out and that was brutal bad luck for the purebred Truienaar, who even spent three years as a war prisoner in the Czech Republic. “Albert could indeed have had a great career because after a few international games with the military team he was even in the interest of a number of English clubs. After the war years he was logically a bit disappointed about the missed opportunity.

After the title in the season 1947-1948, which he won together with Kogelke Appeltans, Jan Van Oir-beek and Toine Polleunis, among others, he went on to work as a player-trainer at Hasselt VV for a few more seasons”.

Painter

Albert remained fairly active even after his football career and was a well-known figure in Sint-truiden. “My father went to work as a technical draughtsman at the municipal administration,” concludes Ivan. “He was also an acclaimed painter and even played mini-football with his colleagues until he was 70 years old.

Albert Haesen died on 26-08-2003 in Sint-Truiden.

Ludo Mignolet looks back on a ten-year career at Stayen

With Ludo Mignolet in the early seventies, a real product of the youth academy of Sint Truiden steamed through to the first team. The right back, who lives in Gorsem, played for more than ten seasons in the yellow-blue shirt and is still very popular in the Trudostede. His career had a promising start with two seasons in first division but then everything turned around when the team ended up in the second division.

My dream, to play in the first team, came true “At a young age, Jef Cleeren persuaded my parents, who were already volunteers at Stayen, to come and play for STVV,” Mignolet, who is from Batsheers, digs deep into his past. “I went through all the youth classes and celebrated my debut as a 19-year-old in the 1972-1973 season during a cup match against Ghent. As Luc Martens’ successor, I never disappear from the team after that. Unfortunately, the Canaries tumbled two years later to second division because the core was not rejuvenated in time and our best players such as Lon Polleunis and Eddy Lievens also left the club”.

Robby Rensenbrink

Of course the two seasons in the highest divison were the most beautiful for the fast right back. “Matches against Anderlecht and Club Brugge in front of a full Stayen with 15,000 spectators are still unforgettable for me,” Ludo testifies. “It was still the period with the purebred lefties. One of them struck me and that was Robby Rensenbrink.

At Stayen it was still a bit of a stretch, but in the Astridpark the Dutchman was unstoppable. His nickname “snake man” is there for a reason. His dribbling was phenomenal and his torturous instinct was also up there. When Robbie was in a good day, he was unstoppable”.

Anecdotes

Of course, the times are no longer comparable. “Make no mistake, in my time I was semi-professional and combined football with a job at the search station in Gorsem,” Mignolet continues smiling. “We trained on the football field of Nieuw Sint-Truiden, on which there was no visible grass and under the moonlight only three times a week. So it comes as no surprise that we came up short against the big clubs. I also remember that on a Saturday I had picked pears all day and had to play against Standard in the evening. We were still real club players and had a nice extra income, money did not really interest us. That’s why I missed a nice transfer to Waterschei”.

Purgatory

Mignolet no longer wants to think too much about second division. “Well, that really was purgatory with bad fields, tough duels and also the results, which were disappointing,” said the 68-yearold Truienaar. “There was a lot of stress because we often played against the relegation and had to fight for the points every match.

Fortunately, I was also able to get some national selections. For instance, I won the Celtic Cup with the military selection and was even received at the Royal Palace together with Georges Leekens, Walter Meeuws, Hugo Broos and other well-known players. Also the interlands with the League team in Syria and Italy will always stay in my memory”.

Ex-canary and top marksman Alfred Riedl passed away

The young STVV fans won’t remember the name ‘Alfred Riedl’ much, but it will undoubtedly ring a bell to the older fans. The 70-year-old Austrian was transferred from Austria Wien to STVV in July 1972.

The left-footed striker lived up to his name and in the 1972-1973 season became the top marksman of the Belgian league, together with the lamented Robby Rensenbrink, with 16 goals. After two seasons of STVV, in which he scored 33 goals in 56 matches, Riedl left for FC Antwerp, where he became again top marksman in the season 1974-1975, later he also played for Standard and Metz, among others. Alfred, who played only 4 international matches, ended his player-career with VFB Mödling in 1985. In 427 official matches he scored 210 times! From 1990 he started an impressive coaching career: first the Austrian national team, then Austria Wien, Egyptian Zamalek and so on. After detours as national coach of Liechtenstein, Vietnam, Palestine, Laos and Indonesia, Riedl returned to Belgium in 2012 as head of Visé’s youth activities. But he couldn’t resist the call of Asia and so he also trained clubs in Vietnam and Indonesia.

In September 2019, he was about to sign a contract with the Indonesian first league Persebaya but had to cancel his contract because of foot and kidney problems. The sympathetic Austrian, who was known for his kicking technique and hard shot, died on 8 September 2020 at the age of 70 in his hometown of Vienna.

The strong point of the Kerels is their playing ability in midfield with among others Hannes Vanderbrugge, Julien De Sart and Jehven Makarenko. Newcomers in Kortrijk are Gilles Dewaele (Westerlo), Michiel Jonckheere (KV Ostend), Adam Jakubech (Lille, Slovakian goalkeeper), Trent Sainsbury (Maccabi Haifa, Australian defender) and Luqman Hakim, who was personally transferred by club-owner Vincent Tan and is also called the Messi of Asia. After two lost promotion finals against Cercle Brugge and KV Mechelen, the Mannekes managed to force the promotion to 1A. With Hernan Losada, Beerschot has the youngest trainer (38) on the field.
