Four questions for STVV chairman DAVID MEEKERS

Our region was hit hard at the beginning of the corona crisis. Michel, a longtime supporter of STVV and member of the supporters club Spionkop Geelblauw, was one of the first patients to be admitted to hospital.

Michel returned home after five months. Over the past months, Michel has grown into one of the city’s icons in the fight against the virus. He fought intensely and won!

His return to Sint-Truiden should not go unnoticed.

Michel was welcomed to loud applause by dozens of STVV supporters, family members, friends and neighbors. Michel received his season ticket for the this season from Community Manager Sandra Bries.

On Thursday, August 20, the National Security Council changed some measures regarding the corona crisis. From September, 400 persons are allowed to attend outdoor events. Achieve something nice with the quality of this group

Jonathan Buatu Manganga is one of the new summer transfer from the Canaries. The almost 27-year-old central defender played for a whole series of clubs in Belgium and abroad. STVV took over Buatu from the Portuguese Rio Ave FC. Besides Belgian, he also has Angolan nationality. The Canary has already collected 15 caps with the Angolan national team. We spoke to the promising newcomer about his career so far and his ambitions for the future.

First, who is Jonathan Buatu?

“I come from Liège, I am married and have a daughter. My faith is very important to me, because I am a Christian. I started playing football when I was five at RFC Liège. At the age of 14 I ended up at Standard, where I enjoyed most of my education. When I was sixteen I made my debut under coach D’Onofrio. After a short period at Genk, I came out for FC Brussels. Followed by two years with the Fulham FC U23. There was no breakthrough in the first team and so I returned to Belgium with a transfer to Waasland-Beveren. I stayed there for three years and then went to Rio Ave FC in Portugal for a season. That club then loaned me out to Mouscron and then to Desportivo Alves, also in Portugal.

And now I am here in Sint-Truiden! - Quite a journey, huh (laughs).”

In recent years Buatu has mainly played in the highest division in Portugal and that is not entirely coincidental. “In Angola, Portuguese is the second language, so that was easy for me. I quickly felt at home there. The competition there is very different from the Belgian one. In the Portuguese league there is more “football”. You will have more time to read the game and play it easily. In Belgium the intensity is much higher and you don’t have that much time”.

How would you describe yourself as a player?

“I describe myself as a healthy aggressive player. Competitiveness is certainly part of that. Whether it’s a practice match in training or a real match, I always want to win everything. That’s good, you know, because I see the same thing with my teammates here. Within the group I look up to players like De Ridder, Mmaee, Teixeira, Steppe, to name a few. ” When asked which international stars he looks up to, Buatu does not have to hesitate for long. “Kompany! Just stopped as a player to become a fulltime trainer at Anderlecht, but a real leader on the field. Definitely something I love. Virgil Van Dijk from Liverpool is also an example to me. Pol Garcia is a man with his heart in the right place. The 25-year-old Spaniard is ambitious, honest and a romantic. We took the time for a long interview at the Greek restaurant “Le Greco”, his favorite in Sint-Truiden.

When we arrive, Garcia is immediately greeted warmly by waiter Giovanni, in Italian that is. Together with the idyllic, Greek atmosphere that surrounds the restaurant’s terrace, we feel right at home in “Saint-Trondpez”.

Garcia and Giovanni appear to have one thing in common: Juventus. Giovanni has been an eternal supporter and brags that the club once again failed to win that damn Champions League. Garcia, who has a past with the Old Lady, hopes new coach Andre Pirlo can turn the tide. The atmosphere was immediately there. After the great introduction we order a mixed grill, Greek pasta, a southern salad with some feta and a carafe of red wine. “I normally never drink alcohol, although I sometimes make an exception when I’m with friends and family. But for this occasion I would like to have a drink ”.

She thinks the distance between us is terrible. But we hear each other a lot. We meet during free moments in Spain or with my brother in Scotland. He moved from Italy to Scotland to revive his football career.

He found a wife and became a father. I regularly travel to Italy to be with my girlfriend. She and her family are also very important in my life. She supports me when things go wrong and lets me scream when I’m angry.

ROBERT JEURIS: Running ability, fighting power and positional play

Robert Jeuris, who played with the Canaries from 1968 to 1973, succeeded. “Like so many young people in those days, football meant everything to me,” Jeuris looks back on its early days. “I was the youngest member of a family of ten children with five boys and five girls. The younger generation of Pauli, being Griet, Jean Marie, Steven and Bart have been fans from the very beginning. Together they also run the company, located in Hoeselt. I once forgot my wife because of football

“In 1973 or 1974 we started the partnership with STVV. That’s so long ago ”, says dad Pauli. Guy Lambeets was the chairman and Ghislain Castermans was secretary. At that time I went to football with my brother-in-law Cyril, who lives in Sint-Truiden. My wife and sister-in-law stayed at home in Sint-Truiden. stvv meets culture Ibrahima Sankhon and Mory Konaté Playing football for the family in Guinea

It must be unique in Europe: two players from Guinea who play in the same club in the highest football league. Ibrahima Sankhon and Mory Konaté are tough guys on the field, but when they speak to us they are open minded, friendly, classy. Mory was born in Conakri, the capital of Guinea with 2 million inhabitants. Ibrahima in Forécariah, 30 km from Conakri. Yet they never met before. Ibrahima (25) started playing football at Santoea Conakri from childhood, while Mory (26) moved to Germany. Before coming to Sint-Truiden, he played for the second team of Borussia Dortmund.

Helping family

Guinea is a West African country, eight times larger than Belgium with 12 million inhabitants. 85% of the population is Muslim, 15% Christian. Our two players are also Muslim. They do not drink alcohol, do not smoke and go to a mosque in Sint-Truiden on Friday to pray. An exemplary life for professional football players.

“We live according to the traditions of our country.

I also take good care of my family, my mother and three brothers. Unfortunately my father died young. I then stopped studying to support them financially. I still do that, because Guinea is a poor country. We must use the talent we receive from God correctly ”, says Ibrahima.

The official language is therefore French. But there are 24 ethnic groups with their own language. “I speak French with Ibrahima,” says Mory. “But I also speak Malinke and Ibrahma Sousou. I also learned German in Dortmund. Unfortunately, I did not finish my studies to become a professional football player. My parents still live in Guinea, I do everything I can to help them ”.
