The 2019-2020 season ended with sadness and concern around the world. COVID-19 caused much damage to society in various ways. On behalf of the club, I want to take a moment to reflect on the loved ones who lost many people during this pandemic. I would also like to thank all the health care providers who went into battle with this terrible virus. We will start the 2020-2021 season under the same circumstances. Nevertheless, STVV wants its supporters to realize their dreams and give them a lot of fun through football. That is why the club starts this season with its own magazine called “De Kanarie”. In this way we wish to communicate in a different way about all our activities. Enjoy the magazine! Our players, technical staff and employees want to be closer to you than ever before.

26 Jorge Teixeira
DEFENDER
Loves football and Kiara
Jorge Teixeira is the oldest player of STVV at 34 years old. A man with experience who can organize the defense and take the whole team in tow. You rarely hear him yelling, he is a man of few words. But he has influence, vista, can read the game and has an exceptional header. Jorge now lives in Kortessem. Has he been on holiday with his family in Portugal? “Yes. I spent a week in Portugal, ”says Teixeira. “I wanted to visit my family sometime. Everything went safely. Everyone is healthy. In Lisbon there was a brief push for corona, but now everything is under control ”.
World citizen
Jorge grew up in Lisbon, a beautiful city with a world-famous resort: Cascais. Still, he moved into the distant world quite young. Football brought him to Maccabi Haifa in Israel. “A very beautiful country with special people. No, I never felt unsafe there. ” Zurich, Sienna and London followed. “Switzerland is top quality, a very high level of life. In London I lived to the rhythm of a world city. I lived 10 minutes from the city center and used the metro a lot. ”. In between he played football at Standard. He lived in Liège, the fiery town. “The atmosphere at Standard is unique. I have rarely experienced that ”. Jorge grew to become one of the best central defenders in Belgium at Standard. At STVV he confirmed that reputation. In the new season, his experience can yield 100% because a new team is under construction. His role is crucial. “I am aware of that. I would like to be the architect or engineer of this team. Plot the guidelines of the coach. Steering and adjusting ”.
Kiara
Jorge is married to Romane and has a threemonth-old daughter, Kiara. “I do everything for her. That’s why I’m glad I chose a village. The ideal place to relax with a baby ”. He still has a one-year contract with STVV. He still looks quite boyish after a tough preparation for the new season. “My face is still completely okay, but my body is something else. I am aiming for a good season. STVV and its supporters are close to my heart ”. And that also applies in reverse. Two years ago, he was voted the most beautiful player. He is indeed a nice guy!
Kortessem
The world citizen ended up in Kortessem. How was that possible? “I was looking for a quiet place. I went to see many places. Eventually press officer Fiorenzo Mostien, who lives in Vliermaal, brought me to Kortessem ”. Teixeira loves to cycle and jog in the hilly landscapes of Haspengouw. On the hollow roads of Vliermaal, on the old tram route Hasselt-Tongeren, between the Romanesque church towers and endless plantations of cherries, apples and pears. “I enjoy the peace and greenery. I don’t have that much contact with the people yet, but I feel their cordiality ”.

15 Keito Nakamura
STRIKER
Great Japanese talent with big ambitions
Two and a half years after signing a professional contract with Gamba Osaka, 17-year-old Keito Nakamura came to Sint-Truiden via Twente. For Nakamura, who turns 20 on July 28, it is his third team for which he plays. Nakamura is a great Japanese football talent. “It was a good time in Osaka and Twente, but I now have to take steps to get better.”
Great footballers appear at a record pace
2017, the U17 World Cup in India. Japan lost to England after penalties in the group stage. England later defeated Spain with all its talented players, such as Jordann Sancho, who returned to Dortmund after the group stage and started playing at a high level. “I look up at such a boy and it was sometimes frustrating to see that other boys are so successful in being among the best players in the world. In this football world, the great footballers appear at a record pace. Coach Yoshiro Moriyama was Japan’s three-year coach from U15 to U17. He made sure I never got into a crisis. And he did not just do that for me. He did it for all my teammates ”.
First professional contract
In December, two months after the tournament, Nakamura signed a professional contract with Gamba Osaka. He came over from Mitsubishi Yowa Youth. On March 18, he scored a point against Urawa Reds in the Levain Cup. Nakamura dribbled 60 meters long and eventually scored a great goal. During a year and a half, Nakamura gained valuable experiences not only in the J1 but also in J3 as a member of the U23 of Gamba Osaka. At that time, some people are important in Nakamura’s life. Hitoshi Morishita, the coach of Gamba Osaka U23, who advised him to ‘always allow your emotions and play with the instinct’ is one of them. “If you make a mistake and you look back at it in a negative way, it is a psychological mistake and you will make more mistakes. So it is important to always remain positive during the game. I think he gave me this advice because it suits my way of playing “.
Numerous offers from European clubs
Nakamura played an active role as a super sub during the U20 World Cup in Poland in 2019. Unfortunately, Nakamura was unable to score himself and Japan lost in the first round against South Korea. But his good performance throughout the tournament led to numerous offers from European clubs. Nakamura, who arrived at Twente at the end of July, started the competition without preparation. He immediately scored against PSV in the 8th minute, the opening game of the season. In the next game against Groningen, he scored with a free kick and received applause from the supporters of Twente. “I had little preparation and yet played in the opening game. I felt that I was not yet used to football in the Netherlands, but I could still bring my own game to the pitch.” As a precaution, the staff of Twente Nakamura kept some games at the side to boost his mental and physical readiness, a good move because he scored a great goal against Ajax on December 1. Nakamura got used to Dutch life and gets a lot of support from his teammates who took him out or took him to their home. The Spanish players also gave him tips: “You shouldn’t always dribble. Walk freely and we’ll get you to the best position.” AZ’s Yukinari Sugawara was a friend. On and along the field. “I played together with him from the U15 to the U20 near Gamba Osaka. We didn’t see each other much
because Alkmaar and Enschede are still far apart, but it was encouraging to know that my friend had the same goal. His presence was great, even though he was not there ”.
Achieving results
Nakamura was dropped on the bench in the 39th minute of the game against Vitesse on 14 December. Nakamura then indicated to be depressed. But a day later he got up with a mindswitch and started training like he never did before. Despite his hard work, Nakamura barely played for the first team of Twente, but the second team competition brought relief. Coach Garcia greatly appreciated that Nakamura remained 200% committed and scored five goals in five games. After the season, Nakamura and Twente decided to terminate their contract. STVV immediately came to the rescue of Nakamura. CEO Takayuki Tateishi said, “I want Keito to get results and STVV can help him get the same results as Takehiro Tomiyasu (now Bologna), Daichi Kamada (now Frankfurt) and Wataru Endo (now Stuttgart).” “I was happy and grateful . I want to achieve my goals here at STVV ”, Nakamura promises. When we look at the past, we often see that Japanese players have to cross a certain limit to break through. For example, look at Keisuke Honda or Maya Yoshida. And so it was with the Japanese players of STVV. During his first season, Tomiyasu played just one minute and didn’t even hit the ball. Kamada lost his place in Frankfurt. Endo did not play at the World Cup in Russia and had to come out of his shell. Nakamura scored six goals (four league goals and two in the cup) for Twente. “I did score some goals, but during the second half of the season I played with the U23. I could blame others but I don’t. I had some things I had to sort out before I could reach my top level. During the corona period I worked hard and lost some body fat. I certainly did not see this period as a waste of time ”.
Olympic Games
If he plays an active role at STVV, Nakamura has the opportunity to participate in the Olympic Games in Tokyo. “I want to be part of that selection. If I can achieve my goals with this club, then the national coach cannot go past me.”

22 Wolke Janssens
DEFENDER
Wolke Janssens looks back and ahead “Top 8 and surprising results against top teams” Wolke Janssens is a Canary for four years now. The 25-year-old transferred from KFC Dessel Sport in 2016. One year later a one-season loan with Lierse SK followed, after which he returned to Sint-Truiden. With Marc Brys as a headcoach, Janssens gave up his role as a forward to become a defender. A career turn he doesn’t regret, as Janssens featured in 19 games last (shortened) season. The cherry on the cake, was his election as STVV’s player of the season, to become the successor of Tomiyasu. We had a nice chat with the sympathetic player during the preparation for the new season and looked back and ahead.
stvv magazine | interview janssens
11
“Our preparation started very difficult with the passing of Mo Nitcheu, which has affected the entire group of players very much,” Janssens begins his analysis of the past season. “We didn’t get many points at the start of the competition but I think the home win against Standard was the turning point for us. After that, we gradually got into our game and after all, it was a calm season.” A calm season with outliers… “In Genk!”, Janssens quickly adds. “But there were other nice victories, just think of the away games at KV Mechelen (1-2) and Charleroi (0-3). That pretty much sums it up, a carefree season with some nice outliers every now and then. Too bad the Play-Offs were cancelled due to corona. Of course you want to keep playing and STVV always aspires to play a significant role in PO2.”
Player of the season
On a personal level, Janssens looks back with satisfaction, although he remains self-critical. “I could have never thought that I would get so many playing minutes. I think it was a good season, but there is always room for improvement. Especially at the beginning of the season I made some stupid mistakes, for example the penalty foul in Antwerp. I knew it would take some time to completely fit in the defense. In the meantime, I am already more familiar with my new position.” And that has not escaped the attention of the STVV supporters. In April, Janssens was even elected as STVV’s player of the season, after a neckand-neck race with Ibrahima Sankhon, Samuel Asamoah, Yuma Suzuki and Daniel Schmidt. “That came as a surprise, I must say. I was very happy to be among the five nominees. It means a lot to me to be elected. I know the players who preceded me and there are some big names among them. I think the fact I’m a local lad has also something to do with it”, Janssens remains modest.
Ready for the new season
In early June, coach Kevin Muscat took over from Milos Kostic. Of course, the Australian was not completely unknown. “He already was part of the club in a different role for several months, so we know his football vision for some time now. Our new coach likes to keep the ball in the team. Just like Marc Brys, by the way. When losing the ball, every coach sets different accents, we now play in a different system as well, but I won’t reveal too much about that yet,” Janssens cautiously adds. We also welcomed a number of new faces within the technical staff. The collaboration seems to be going well. “Also within the staff we knew most members already. The staff is very enthusiastic. They work hard and pass their enthusiasm to the squad. The coach is very accessible. He speaks with everyone and not just with the key players. He wants to teach something to all of the lads, he communicates well, has a lot of experience and knows exactly where he is heading.” Although preparations are still in full swing, we already inquired about the ambitions for the new season. “In this new competition format (where numbers 5 to 8 compete for the 4th European ticket) I think that we should push for the top 8 with STVV. Again with some surprising results against the top teams, just like last season. We will do everything we can and we count on the support of our twelfth man, then I’m sure everything will work out.” And what are Wolke Janssens’ personal ambitions? “On a personal level I don’t put too much pressure on myself. I used to do that, but you get older and start looking at what’s is coming for you. That works best for myself. Things can go fast in football, just look at the past year. In the beginning you may not be part of the starting eleven, two or three match days later it can be completely different”, Janssens concludes.

Season ticket 2020-2021
First season ticket holders
Saartje and Rudy Dessers were the first new season ticket holders for the upcoming 2020-2021 football season. Father and daughter have been fans for years and have already bought season tickets in the past. But due to circumstances, they chose to follow STVV on the televison for several years. Last season they returned to Stayen to watch the top games. They thought!
“That’s right,” says Rudy. “We were eager to attend all the top matches at Stayen. But be cause Saartje wanted to see the Canaries live at work more often, we ended up there every game. That actually immediately resulted in the purchase of a season ticket for the coming football season ”. Rudy has been a fan of the Canaries for more than 30 years. Saartje has been going to Stayen since she was twelve years old. Due to circumstances, they started watching the games on television a few seasons ago. “After a while you miss the atmosphere in the stadium,” says daughter Saartje. “You create a bond with the people around you and that is a special feeling. We leave for the match together, go out for dinner and stay in the Rvue after the match ”. You can find Saartje and Rudy in section E of thee ast stand. “So we are happy that we were able to get our seats in the stadium. Those are the best places in the stadium, ”Saartje cheers enthusiastically. “From there, she has a great view of Samuel Asamoah, her favorite Canary,” says father Rudy.

The Jupiler Pro League
The shortened football season of 2019 - 2020 goes into the history books as one of the strangest seasons we have ever experienced. However, some actors in Belgian football have not been idle. We list the most relevant trends and the most important club news. The Jupiler Pro League made the necessary decisions for the start of the new season. The competition format changes. In the coming season, 18 clubs will play at the highest level. At the end of the season, a shortened play-off period will be played with the first four teams from the regular season, the so-called Champion Play-offs. Seats 5-8 will also have the opportunity to secure a European ticket through a shortened play-off 2 program. The last of the rankings drops to 1B. Number 17 of the competition plays a barrage match against the number two in 1B for relegation or promotion.
New shirt STVV
Macron is the new clothing partner of STVV! The Italian sportswear company designed the new design and describes it as follows: “A leap forward, that is the concept of the home shirt”. The home shirt is characterized by the feathers of the Canary. The light yellow and dark yellow color play provides a new touch on the shirt. The gray goalkeeper kit also has the same design. The away shirts have the same design as last season and are unmistakable because of the “Victory-line” on the chest. This design was previously designed by the Japanese company “Beams”. The shirts are for sale via the STVV Fanshop or the STVV online webshop at the price of 65 EUR.
Merchandise
When you say Canaries, you say yellow and blue. This also translates into a full range of merchandise items. Discover the STVV essentials such as the Yellow blue scarves, caps & flags. For cycling enthusiasts you now also have a STVV cycling kit of the best quality. You can already buy it from 75 EUR. stvv magazine | clubnews

Our first opponents of the 2020-2021 season SUNDAY 9 AUGUST 1.30 PM: STVV-RSC ANDERLECHT
History news
In the seven seasons (1959-1966) under trainer Raymond Goethals, Anderlecht could only win once at Stayen. In that period, the Canaries were not only in charge in their own house, they even won twice in the Astrid Park and played a draw twice. Anderlecht then caused a furore as a European top club with eye-catching football. We would like to keep in mind an anecdote from our Golden Boot Lon Polleunis: “Before the match against Anderlecht in 1965, Lucien Boffin got the nice idea to walk onto the field with a knife between the teeth. When Paul Van Himst saw this, he turned pale. The side factors on Stayen were a thorn in the side of Anderlecht and that gnawed the morale of the players, which means they lose thirty percent of their options. ”
SATURDAY 15 AUGUST 7 PM: KAA GENT-STVV
The past seasons there has been a large turnover of players between AA Gent and STVV. We immediately think of the recent transfers from Roman Bezus, Jordan Botaka and Alexandre De Bruyn to the Buffalo’s, in reverse there was the transition of Thibault De Smet and Steve De Ridder, who enjoyed his youth education in Ghent. The list of ex-Canaries with a Ghent past is long: Stef Agten, Frank Boeckx, Ludovic Buysens, Thomas Caers, Jean-Luc Dompé, Filip Fiers, Anders Nielsen, Rob Schoofs, David Van Hoyweghen, Kenny Verhoene, Wouter Vrancken and Stijn Vreven. One of the best games ever between the two clubs was contested on October 5, 2002 with a 6-4 victory for the Canaries thanks to 2 hits from Mbonabucya and Vangeel. The last win in Ghent was last March 17 (1-3).
MONDAY 24 AUGUST 8:45 PM: STVV-CERCLE BRUGGE
Against Cercle Brugge, the Canaries achieved their biggest victory ever in first class. On Sunday, October 18, 1964, the score was 8-0, including 5 goals from the Congolese striker Raoul Lolinga, still a record for the highest number of goals scored in one game. It will not run like this on Monday 24 August. Before the rigid season, the club from Bruges continued its resurrection at Stayen (0-1) and thus managed to realize the preservation. Cercle Brugge is without a doubt the black beast for the Canaries. In the last 15 confrontations in the highest league at Stayen was only won twice (11/25/2006 and 02/25/1995) and also only scored 9 times.
SUNDAY 30 AUGUST 4 PM: KAS EUPEN-STVV
Exactly ten years ago, KAS Eupen was promoted to the highest league in football for the first time in its history. Since the accommodation on the Kehrweg did not meet the necessary requirements, the Pandas played their home games on the first ten match days of the 2010-2011 season at Stayen. On the eleventh matchday, Eupen had a firstever victory against STVV (6-0) in their renovated stadium. It was only a short flare-up because the relegation could not be avoided. In the season 2016-2017 they returned to the highest class because White Star Brussels did not obtain a license. In addition to Nils Schouterden, there is another ex-Canary active this season with Stef Peeters. stvv magazine | history news

Looking back at the most memorable match ever between STVV and Anderlecht! On Sunday, October 3, 1965, STVV and Anderlecht faced each other in a direct game for the first place.
Both teams had won their last three games. “Staaien” was packed with 23,000 spectators, who literally stood to the back line. Referee Vital Loraux threatened to cancel the match because the fans were too close to the field, but STVV coach Raymond Goethals was able to change the legendary ref. On a field, which was deliberately inadequate to break Anderlecht’s technical football, STVV won 2-0, thanks to two goals from Roger Maes. Sint-Truiden thus became the only leader. It took the autumn title and eventually finished in the season 1965-1966 as vice champion on seven points from Anderlecht.
Line-ups
STVV: Léon Bosmans – Luc Martens – Jean Claes – Marcel Lemoine – Lucien Boffin – Lucien N’Dala – Frits Vandenboer – Roger Nilis – Roger Maes – Odilon Polleunis – Toine Leenders ANDERLECHT: Jean Trappeniers, Georges Heylens, Julien Kialunda, Jean Plaskie, Jean Cornelis, Pierre Hanon, Jef Jurion, Paul Van Himst, Pummy Bergholtz, Jacky Stockman, Wilfried Puis. 12 Samuel Asamoah
MIDFIELDER
STVV meets culture
It is no coincidence that Samuel Asamoah is called Samuel. It is the name of a biblical prophet and indicates the Christian roots of our midfielder. His native Ghana is 68% Christian and 15% Islamic. Samuel brought that parental tradition back to Belgium where he goes to church every week. Ghana is a large country, eight times larger than Belgium, with almost 30 million inhabitants. He was born in the capital Accra, a major city with two million inhabitants. Ghana gained independence from colonizer Great Britain in 1957.
The football bug
Samuel had the football bug at a young age. When he was 13 he left for Senegal, to the Aspire Academy. Away from mom and dad and his three brothers and four sisters. “Of course I was homesick. It was a hard school with secondary education and two training sessions a day. But it pays off. I knew I could become a professional player. ” Samuel will then play in Qatar for a year and a half. He can go home twice a year. Then he leaves for Europe. The Aspire Academy places him in Eupen. He stays there for two years and then goes to OHL Leuven before he ends up at STVV. The shy Asamoah billows in Sint-Truiden. He likes to live there, meet nice people and lives there with his wife.
Black Lives Matter
We ask him if he sympathizes with the protest movement ‘Black Lives Matter’. Protest that has blown over from the USA, against brutal police actions and brutality against black citizens. Against colonialism and slavery.
Ghana has a history of executed slaves. There are dozens of slave fortresses in the southern region where the indigenous people were bestially imprisoned before being deported across the ocean. Dutch, British and Portuguese were responsible for the disgraceful trade. “Indeed an immense disgrace that continues to proliferate in the collective memory of our country. Ghana has been freed from that agony, but we have of course not forgotten that. ”
For Ghana
On the field we see a technically strong midfielder who made a world goal in the home match against his former club Eupen: a cannon ball from thirty meters. Samuel (26 years old) still has a growth margin. “I would like to play a bit more offensive. I want to get even better for STVV. And I still have ambition for the national team of Ghana. Yes, I really believe in that. Playing for your homeland is the best thing there is. ”
In Belgium, people protest against King Leopold II and against the merciless colonialism in Congo. “I certainly follow that, which affects me and all African players of STVV. Yes, we talk a lot about that. ” stvv magazine | interview asamoah

Opening weekend Groenmarkt
During the weekend f Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August, the renewed ‘Groenmarkt’ will be festively opened. On Saturday you can go there for a snack and a drink during an aperitif. On Sunday you can picnic with your family or contact bubble. The shops in the city center are also open on Sunday 23 August between 2 pm and 6 pm.
MMR Summer Runs
The Monumentsrun edition of September 12 is postponed as a precaution for a flare-up of the coronavirus. In the meantime, runners can fully enjoy themselves during the MMR Summer Runs. As an alternative, we do organize the MMR Summer Runs during the summer months. In the following weeks we will also draw a route in the city center and in four of our boroughs where you can walk alone or with friends. The courses are always clearly signposted. Do you run the run within the specified period and register the activity on Strava? Then you can win a voucher of 25 euros from Decathlon. After each run, four coupons are raffled among all participants. The man and woman who complete the course the fastest also receive a receipt. The Monuments Run Summer Runs take place from: - 17 to August 23: Velm - August 31 until September 6: Gelinden - 7 to September 13: City center Don’t have a Strava account yet? You can register the app for free on your smartphone. You do not need a paid subscription to upload your activities. All information about the MMR Summer Runs can be found in the coming weeks at www.monumentenrunsinttruiden.be and www.facebook.com/monumentenrun
Kozjei in de kottei
You don’t have to go far for a holiday feeling and fun activities for young and old. With ‘Kõzjei in the kottei’ we bring the events to you! In August, enjoy a tourist walk, entertainment, music, sports activities with the sports caravan, comedy, work shops ... in your area. We place a small stage on the square or in a street in the center of the district. In collaboration with neighboring catering establishments or associations, we provide a drink and / or food stand. At 5 pm we open the evening with a tourist walk in the neighborhood led by an experienced tourist guide. In neighborhoods with many families, a search is also linked to this. From 6 pm we provide a varied program with something for everyone: animation, music, sports activities with the sports caravan, comedy, workshops ... The full program for August can be found at www.sint-truiden.be/kozjei-in-de-kottei stvv magazine | city news
