LEE/VAKULYA — BURNT [ THE ETERNAL LONG NOW ] E In Burnt [ the eternal long now ], LEE/ VAKULYA choreographically explores burnout as a collective, social phenomenon. In a relentless drive of action and effort, three dancers burn their energy into a danced rat race - a dance that mirrors a widely shared feeling of unrest and exhaustion. “Although it’s a very lonely experience, burnout is a social phenomenon that we collectively endure, but also unwillingly allow and sustain. Burnt [ the eternal long now ] brings it to the foreground as a shared problem that shouldn’t remain confined to private spheres, as if taboo. We don’t burnout ‘en masse’ because of personal flaws, kids, or an unexpected loss, but because overwork, overwhelm and anxiety are structural to how our lives are built. Never have we been so busy, and never has our future been more hopeless. Capitalist economy, when left unleashed by politics, generates a systemic overdrive that doesn’t only push social bonds and mental health toward disintegration, but also atrophies our imagination, and obviously destroys natural environments.” Taking this as point of departure, Zoltán Vakulya and Chen-Wei Lee created a dance that explores extreme fatigue in relation to others. The performers drive themselves into exhaustion, both together and alone. Sweat and determination are shared, eagerness feeds even more eagerness, and drives their common motor into overheat. The question we are left with, is if the beauty of their efforts to support each other doesn’t tragically trigger their collective downfall.
This performance was awarded the Taishin Arts Award 2023 for best performance. “Through the topic of burnout, LEE/VAKULYA proposed another kind of extreme dance body expression, bringing the viewer to a continuous bombardment of body and sounds, a special experience of visual, auditory and fatigue processes is created through choreography,

Hoewel het een zeer eenzame ervaring is, is burn-out ook een sociaal fenomeen dat we collectief doorstaan, maar dat we ook ongewild toelaten en in stand houden. Burnt [ the eternal long now ] brengt het naar voren als een gedeeld probleem dat niet beperkt moet blijven tot de privésfeer, alsof er een taboe op rust. We krijgen niet massaal een burn-out vanwege persoonlijke gebreken, kinderen of een onverwacht verlies, maar omdat overwerk, overweldiging en angst een fundamenteel onderdeel van ons leven uitmaken. Nog nooit zijn we zo druk geweest en nog nooit was onze toekomst zo hopeloos. De kapitalistische economie genereert, wanneer deze wordt losgelaten door de politiek, een systemische overdrive die niet alleen sociale banden en geestelijke gezondheid richting desintegratie duwt, maar die ook onze verbeelding atrofieert en natuurlijke omgevingen vernietigt. Met dit als uitgangspunt creëerden Zoltán Vakulya en Chen-Wei Lee een dans die extreme vermoeidheid in relatie tot anderen onderzoekt. De performers drijven zichzelf tot uitputting, zowel samen als alleen. Zweet en vastberadenheid worden gedeeld, gretigheid voedt nog meer gretigheid en drijft hun gemeenschappelijke motor tot oververhitting. De vraag waar we mee achterblijven is of de schoonheid van hun inspanningen om elkaar te steunen niet op tragische wijze hun collectieve ondergang inluidt.

BIO’S Zoltán Vakulya is a choreographer, dancer and actor from Hungary, based in Brussels. He has studied directing and choreography at the Budapest Contemporary Dance University. He graduated in SEAD/Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, with the support of Leonardo Da Vinci Scholarship. A holder of the DanceWeb scholarship in Impulstanz International Dance Festival in Vienna in 2011. He works for Mal Pelo dance company, and HODWORKS company, Kendell Geers, Francesco Scavetta, Kar Van Welden, Vera Tussing, Albert Quesada and others. As a choreographer, he has created several dance performances and toured in Europe, Brazil, Taiwan, UK, USA. He has performed in festivals such as the Venice Biennale in Italy, Greece, Spain, San Francisco Festival in USA, SIDance in Korea, Rencontres Choréograhiques in Paris.
Chen-Wei Lee is a Belgium based Taiwanese choreographer, freelance dancer and Gaga teacher, and she received the 24th TECO Award for the art of dance. She began her career as a dancer with Batsheva Dance Company (2009-2014), and as a guest dancer at GothenborgsOperas Danskompani (2015-16), Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch (2017), VOETVOLK/Lisbeth Gruwez (2017~present), Peeping Tom (2020 August~present). As a choreographer her solo work Black Box was the most excited and creative work of the year reported by the Taipei Times. Her collaborative duet Elephantes was the out-standing performance of the year reported by The Jerusalem post. Since 2016, she continuously creating dance work with Zoltán Vakulya as LEE/VAKULYA.
Zoltán has been nominated for the Best Choreographer for the work Mephisto (2022), commissioned by the Serbian National Theater, and he received the Best Dancer nomination at Catalan Critiques Award (2022).
