INLEIDING - INTRODUCTION

In 2016 richt Artefact de blik naar het luchtruim. Up in the Air vertrekt vanuit een schijnbare tegenstelling: Enerzijds lijkt het luchtruim een grote open en lege vlakte, brengt ze rust en hoop, geeft ze letterlijk adem(ruimte). Anderzijds blijkt het voor wie het wil zien tjokvol; een infrastructurele, ecologische, politieke en economische ruimte volgeladen met verkeer, valoristies, grenzen en data. Up in the Air gaat dieper in op deze paradox en verkent wat kunstenaars en ontwerpers gefascineerd door het luchtruim, de elementen erin en/of het gebruik ervan hierover te vertellen hebben.

Observeren, meten, hercreëren, representeren en interpreteren van het luchtruim staan centraal in het eerste deel van de tentoonstelling, waarin het werk van James Turrell als startpunt kan gezien worden. Zijn levenswerk Roden Crater is een ode aan de luchtfenomenen zoals die zich voor het blote oog ontplooien. Zowel James Turrell als Paolo Di Trapani lieten zich inspireren door de geschriften van de Belgisch-Nederlandse sterrenkundige Marcel Minnaert, en meerbepaald zijn boek Light and Color in the Outdoors. Terwijl Turrell overal ter wereld ‘skyspaces’ bouwt, vertaalde Di Trapani de experimenten van Minnaert in performances en installaties tussen 2000 en 2007, en vervolgens in een commercieel product dat in de lente van 2014 gelanceerd werd onder het spinoffbedrijf CoeLux. Volgens WIRED ‘a nanotech skylight that looks just like the sun shining overhead.’ Ief Spincemailles oeuvre bevat zo’n tiental werken waarin hij (elementen uit) het luchtruim onder de loep neemt. Zo visualiseert hij in Behind the Horizon de kromming van het aardoppervlak en in Lightmap Devices het veranderend landschap van het luchtruim op vier verschillende plaatsen ter wereld. Frederic Geurts koppelt dan weer lucht en luchtdruk aan zwaartekracht, evenwicht en balans. Laurent Grasso traceert in Les Oiseaux een zwerm spreeuwen doorheen het Italiaanse luchtruim. Vanuit het verlangen beter te begrijpen en/of dieper te waarderen, proberen kunstenaars en ontwerpers elementen uit het luchtruim te

In 2016, Artefact turns its gaze up towards the sky. Up in the Air takes as its starting point the following apparent contradiction: On the one hand, our airspace looks like a massive open and empty space, giving piece, rest and hope, being literally a space to breathe. On the other hand, that same space is incredibly full and crowded; it is an infrastructural, ecological, political and economic space full of traffic, valorisations, borders and data. Up in the Air intends to explore this paradox looking into the works of artists and designers fascinated by airspace, the elements within and/or our use thereof.

To observe, measure, recreate, represent and interpret airspace is the main focus of the first part of the exhibition for which the work of James Turrell can be understood as the starting point. His life’s work Roden Crater is an ode to air phenomena as they can be seen by the naked eye. Both James Turrell as well as Paolo Di Trapani were inspired by the writings of the Belgian-Dutch astronomer Marcel Minnaert, and more specifically his book Light and Color in the Outdoors. While Turrell built his ‘skyspaces’ worldwide, Di Trapani translated the experiments of Minnaert into performances and installations between 2000 and 2007, and into a commercial product launched in the spring of 2014 under the spin-off CoeLux. According to WIRED magazine it is ‘a nanotech skylight that looks just like the sun shining overhead.’ The oeuvre of Ief Spincemaille contains some ten works related to (elements in) airspace. He visualises the curvature of the earth in Behind the Horizon and traces the changing skies in four different places around the world in Lightmap Devices. Frederic Geurts, in turn, links air and air pressure to gravity, equilibrium and balance. Laurent Grasso traces a flock of starlings, flying through the Italian sky, in The Birds. Driven by a desire to better understand and/ or further appreciate their subjects, artists and designers attempt to recreate elements in airspace: from the clouds in the Nimbus series of Berndnaut Smilde and the Nebulagramme Series of Charlotte 7

recreëren; van de wolken in de Nimbus-serie van Berndnaut Smilde en Nebulagramme Series van Charlotte Charbonnel, tot de tornado machine en tekeningen van Alistair McClymont en de luchtverplaatsingen in Event Horizon van de gebroeders Malstaf. Als maatschappij hebben we ons het luchtruim toegeëigend. Het werd een infrastructurele, ecologische, commerciële en militaire ruimte, waaruit de waarden en normen, gangbaar binnen onze samenleving, zijn af te lezen. Amy Balkins The Atmosphere: A Guide traceert ons gebruik volgens zeven verschillende thema’s in de verschillende lagen van de atmosfeer, en introduceert dit tweede deel van Up in the Air. Inspelend op de lucht als ecologische en economische ruimte, laten Center for Genomic Gastronomy en Nicola Twilley je proeven van smogmeringues, en tracht Amy Balkin in Public Smog het luchtruim terug de status van publiek goed te geven. Zweeds duo Bigert & Bergström gaan in The Weather War dieper in op de pogingen van de mens om het weer te controleren. Wesley Goatley & Georgina Voss onderscheppen live radiosignalen van overvliegend luchtverkeer boven Leuven en België. Ze visualiseren de onzichtbare logistieke en juridische infrastructuur van het internationale luchtruim in As Above Not Below. Superflux geeft in Drone Aviary een voorsmaakje van een nabije toekomst waarin het commercieel gebruik van drones ingeburgerd is en ingezet wordt in journalistiek, reclame, transportregeling, etc. Inspelend op het militair gebruik van drones brengt Ruben Pater de

As a society, we have appropriated our airspace. It has become an infrastructural, ecological, commercial and military space, from which we can read the values and norms that run our society.

Amy Balkin’s The Atmosphere: A Guide traces the use of the different layers of airspace according to seven different themes, and introduces the second part of this exhibition. Playing into air as an ecological and economic space, the Center for Genomic Gastronomy and Nicola Twilley give a taste of smog meringues, while Amy Balkin attempts to consider airspace as a public good. The Swedish duo Bigert & Bergström explore the attempts of man to control the weather in The Weather War. Wesley Goatley & Georgina Voss intercept live radio signals from air traffic above Leuven and Belgium. They visualise the invisible logistical and legal infrastructure of international airspace in their work As Above Not Below. In Drone Aviary, Superflux gives a sample of a near future scenario in which commercial use of drones is common and part of journalism, advertising, air traffic control, etc. Playing into the military use of drones, Ruben Pater visually and auditively maps the different models in use in Drone Survival Guide and A Study into 21st Century Drone Acoustics. The works of Alicia Framis and Laurent Grasso position the use of drones in a historical context. The Light of God, by James Bridle, plays into the rhetoric used for drone strikes: impersonal, out of our hands, at a distance, beyond our control. The facts and

The Light of God, het werk van James Bridle speelt in op de retoriek waarmee droneaanvallen worden beschreven: als onpersoonlijk, uit onze handen, letterlijk op afstand. De feiten en zeer reĂŤele gevolgen van dergelijke aanvallen zijn het onderwerp van de Drone Strike-onderzoeken van Forensic Architecture. In Rafah: Black Friday, maken ze de omgekeerde beweging en onderzoeken ze het luchtruim om de sequentie van evenementen op de grond in kaart te kunnen brengen. De tentoonstelling Up in the Air eindigt met een liefdesverhaal van Australisch ontwerper en architect Liam Young: In the Robot Skies. A Drone Love Story.

Maar Artefact is meer dan een tentoonstelling.

De performances van o.a. Rob Sweere, Marije Baalman en Rodrigo Sobarzo, de artist talks, het windparlement en de grijze cellen lezing, en niet te vergeten het Artefact music festival, samengesteld door Gilke Vanuytsel, werpen elk op hun manier een ander licht op dat wat zich bevindt tussen het aardoppervlak en de ruimte.

But Artefact is more than an exhibition. The performances by, amongst others, Rob Sweere, Marije Baalman and Rodrigo Sobarzo, the artist talks, the wind parliament and grey cells lecture, and last but not least, the Artefact music festival, curated by Gilke Vanuytsel, each shed a different light on that space between the surface of the Earth and outer space.

In 1977 kocht Amerikaans kunstenaar James Turrell een site in Noord-Arizona; de rode en zwarte cilindervormige kegel van ongeveer 400.000 jaar oud en 182,88 m hoog zou een monumentaal kunstwerk moeten worden; een observatorium voor het naakte oog. Het complex zal, wanneer het af is, 21 kamers en 6 tunnels bevatten, elk gericht op het waarnemen en ervaren van specifieke fenomenen uit het luchtruim. De constructie begon in 1979 en kostte Turrell naar eigen zeggen twee huwelijken en een relatiebreuk.

In Up in the Air presenteren we drie foto’s van de Roden Crater-site, aangevuld met twee maquettes van ruimtes in het Roden Crater-complex: Crater’s Eye en Sun and Moon Space. In de Sun and Moon Space bijvoorbeeld, valt het beeld van de zon en maan op een grote basaltsteen. Vanop de steen vertrekt een 900 meter lange tunnel naar een portaal met zicht op de lucht. De tunnel fungeert zo als een gigantische telescoop waarvan een grote lens in het midden het licht focust.

De kortfilm James Turell’s Roden Crater, geproduceerd door Erin Wright naar aanleiding van de Turrellretrospectieve in het Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2013-2014, biedt verder inzicht in de motieven van Turrell en probeert de ervaring van het rondwaren in Roden Crater op camera vast te leggen.

In 1977, American artist James Turrell bought a site in Northern Arizona; the roughly 400.000 year old, 600 foot tall red and black cinder cone is being turned into a monumental work of art: a naked eye observatory. When complete, the project will contain 21 viewing spaces and 6 tunnels, each dedicated to the observation and experience of specific atmospheric phenomena. The construction of Roden Crater started in 1979 and according to Turrell came at the price of two marriages and a relationship. In Up in the Air we present three photographs of the Roden Crater site, together with two models from spaces within the Roden Crater complex: Crater’s Eye and Sun and Moon Space. In the Sun and Moon Space for instance, images of the sun and moon fall on to the surface of a large basalt stone called the ‘image stone.’ Leading up from that stone is an approximately 900-foot tunnel that leads to a portal, an opening to the sky.

The 900-foot tunnel acts as a giant refractor telescope and contains a very large lens at the centre to focus the light.

The shortfilm James Turell’s Roden Crater, produced by Erin Wright for the Turrell retrospective in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 20132014, further provides insight into the motives of Turrell and attempts to capture the experience of walking through Roden Crater on camera.

Sinds de start van het Roden Crater-project bouwde Turrell overal ter wereld ‘skyspaces’. Het zijn autonome werken die tegelijkertijd fungeren als oefeningen voor zijn ultieme levenswerk. De dichtsbijzijnde bevindt zich in Den Haag en heet Hemels Gewelf. Gebouwd in 1996 en gerestaureerd in 2008 ervaar je op de Kijkduin in Den Haag het hemelgewelf als een koepel die rust op de randen van de kom; het luchtruim kromt zich en wekt de indruk alsof je het bijna kan aanraken; een fenomeen dat bekend staat als ‘celestial vaulting’.

Turrell ontleende veel inspiratie aan het werk van de Belgisch-Nederlandse sterrenkundige Marcel Minnaert (1893 – 1970) en meerbepaald diens publicatie Light and Color in the Outdoors. Het boek legt uit hoe je met het blote oog verschillende fenomenen in het luchtruim kan observeren.

Since the start of the Roden Crater project, Turrell has constructed ‘skyspaces’ worldwide.

They are autonomous works, but function at the same time as elaborate exercises for his ultimate life work. The closest to Leuven can be found in The Hague and is called Celestial Vault. Built in 1996 and restored in 2008, this skyspace located on the Kijkduin in The Hague, allows you to experience the sky as a dome resting on the edges of a bowl; airspace appears to be warped, creating the impression of one almost being able to touch it: a phenomenon known as ‘celestial vaulting’.

Turrell was very much inspired by the writings of Belgian-Dutch astronomer Marcel Minnaert (1893 – 1970) and more specifically his publication Light and Color in the Outdoors. The book reveals the myriad phenomena that may be observed outdoors with no more than the naked eye.

I am sitting on the beach and I keep a yardstick in front of me, parallel with the horizon. They say that the Earth is round and I want to verify whether this is true. But either my yardstick is too short or the Earth is not round enough.

In Behind the Horizon probeert Ief Spincemaille de kromming van het aardoppervlak weer te geven.

Op 14 mei 2010 trok hij samen met 285 vrijwilligers en een gigantische meetlat naar het strand van Oostende. Het middelpunt van de meetlat rustte op de grond, vijf kilometer links en rechts van dit centrum rijkt de hoogte al tot 229 centimeter boven het aardoppervlak. Twintig meter aan elkaar gemonteerde beelden visualiseren de kromming van het aardoppervlak over een afstand van 10,8 kilometer.

In Behind the Horizon, Ief Spincemaille aims to visualise the curvature of the Earth. On 14 May 2010, Spincemaille, together with 285 volunteers went to the beach of Ostend, Belgium, carrying a giant yardstick with them. The stick’s middle point was resting on the ground. Five kilometres to the left and five kilometres to the right of this centre, the stick was already rising 229 centimetres above the Earth’s surface.

Twenty metres of images stitched together make for a comprehensible image of the Earth’s curvature over a distance of 10,8 kilometres.

Vier kleine lichtmodules geven de evolutie van het zonlicht weer over een periode van één jaar.

En dat voor vier verschillende locaties: Noord- en Zuidpool (Prinses Elisabeth station), België en Nieuw-Zeeland. Twee keer de andere kant van de wereld. Je ziet zo voor elke locatie een pulsatie van licht en duisternis, die als een soort hartslag misschien meer dan wat dan ook de eigenheid van een bepaalde plaats bepaalt.

Op 1 januari 2015 plaatste Ief Spincemaille vier camera’s op die locaties. Elke zes minuten namen de camera’s een foto van de lucht. Eén jaar later werden alle foto’s gecompileerd in een beeldmontage: 240 foto’s per dag, geordend in 365 kolommen. De montages visualiseren de verandering van het licht en de ervaring van de lucht op verschillende plaatsen in de wereld. Met Lightmap Devices bouwt Spincemaille verder op het werk Lightmap Leuven, een installatie dat in Museum M tijdens 2013 elke zes minuten een foto nam die simultaan geprint werd op één van 87.600 kleine plastic blokjes. Elke zes minuten werd zo een blokje toegevoegd aan het beeld, een spoor van wat tijd in essentie is; het draaien van de aarde rond de zon.

Four small light modules portray the evolution of the sunlight across one entire year. And this for four different locations. The North and South Pole (Princess Elisabeth station), Belgium and New Zealand. Two times the opposite sides of the world. A pulsation of light and darkness for each location. A kind of hartbeat maybe, conveying more than anything else the singularity of that particular place.

On 1 January 2015, Ief Spincemaille placed a camera on each of these locations. Every six minutes the cameras took a picture of the sky. One year later, all pictures were brought together and arranged into one composite image: 240 pictures for each day arranged in 365 lines. The resulting composite images reflect the light changes and various experiences of the sky in these different places around the world.

Lightmap Devices is a continuation of Lightmap Leuven, an installation in M Museum which over the course of 2013 took pictures of the sky every six minutes, and printed this simultaneously on one of 87.600 small plastic blocks. Every six minutes, a block was added to the composite image, leaving a trace of what time essentially is: the movement of the Earth around the sun.

Het werk Air with Paper Shreds kan begrepen worden als een reeks vormenstudies van beweging in de lucht. Ze ondersteunden de ontwikkeling van het sculpturale installatiewerk dat Frederic Geurts creĂŤert, vaak in situ en inspelend op de omgeving waarvoor ze bestemd zijn. Geurts schrijft zich daarmee in, in de traditie van de site-specific art, de beweging die de omgeving betrekt bij het kunstwerk. De scheiding tussen kunstwerk en haar omgeving wordt daarmee diffuser. Als toeschouwer, sta je in het kunstwerk waardoor een meer totale ontmoeting en ervaring kan ontstaan. De omgeving of de context kan zowel de architecturale ruimte als de betekenis van de plek zijn, maar evengoed de zwaartekracht waaraan we onderworpen zijn. De vorm uit Air with Paper Shreds vinden we o.a. terug in werk zoals Proposal for an art intervention, 2007 in Netwerk Aalst en de tijdelijke interventie in het park van het kasteel van Gaasbeek; In Between, 2013.

Parallel met zijn grotere installaties ontwikkelde Geurts instrumenten die reageren op voor het oog meestal onzichtbare veranderingen in de atmosfeer. Instrumenten zoals The Impossible Line en de Magnetic Field Meter plaatsen de tentoonstellingsruimte en de bezoeker in het grotere geheel; i.e. onze positie op de planeet en de wetmatigheden van de kosmos.

The work Air with Paper Shreds can be understood as a form study on movement in air. These studies were instrumental in the development of the sculptural installation works Frederic Geurts creates, often in situ and in relation to their destined surroundings. As such, Geurts inscribes himself in the tradition of site-specific art, drawing the surrounding context into the artwork. The separation between the work of art and its surroundings becomes more diffused. As a visitor, you are positioned in the artwork, facilitating a more complete and direct encounter and experience. The surroundings or context can imply the architectural space, as well as the meaning or connotation of a space, but also the reality of gravity we are subject to. The shapes from Air with Paper Shreds return in works such as Proposal for an art intervention, 2007 in Netwerk Aalst and the temporary intervention in the park of the castle of Gaasbeek: In Between, 2013.

Parallel to his larger installations, Geurts developed instruments that respond to changes in the atmosphere, usually invisible to the naked eye.

Instruments such as The Impossible Line and the Magnetic Field Meter position the exhibition space and the visitor in a larger context: our place on the planet and the cosmic laws.

In de video-installatie Les Oiseaux volgen we een zwerm spreeuwen boven het Vaticaan in Rome.

Aan een hoge snelheid lijken ze grafische vormen te maken in de lucht. Ze bewegen als geladen deeltjes in een steeds veranderend magnetisch veld. De elegantie van hun bewegingen in de lucht en de schoonheid van de lucht zijn overdonderend.

De toeschouwer blijft verwonderd achter, zich afvragend of het gaat om toeval of een miraculeuze manifestatie.

In the video installation Les Oiseaux we follow a flock of starlings above the Vatican in Rome, making graphic forms in the sky at high speed. They act like charged particles in a randomly changing magnetic field. The grace of their movements and the beauty of the sky stun the spectator, who can wonder if it is a chance occurence or a miraculous manifestation.

Paolo Di Trapani en CoeLux een ruimtelijke installatie waarin lucht en zonlicht worden gerecreëerd, en dat aanvoelt alsof licht binnenvalt door een natuurlijk dakraam. De installatie combineert een component die instaat voor de zon, met een systeem dat een blauwe diffusie creëert en dus de perceptie oproept alsof er zich een oneindige ruimte boven het raam bevindt. Bewust van het feit dat dit niet kan – de kamer werd geplaatst in het midden van een besloten ruimte – wordt de bezoeker uitgedaagd om ervaring aan weten te koppelen; dat wat hij voelt te verbinden met dat wat hij weet. With CoeLux Systems 45 HC Prof. Paolo Di Trapani and CoeLux present a spatial installation that recreates the sky and sunlight in a room-like setting alluding to a natural skylight. The installation combines a warm-directional component representing the sun with a system responsible for a bluish-diffusion, creating the perception of infinite depth in the space above. Consciously aware of the fact that this is impossible – the box is placed in the middle of a closed room – the visitor is challenged to combine experience with knowledge: that which is felt with that which is known.

Di Trapani thus inscribes himself in a history of attempting to artificially recreate daylight: from incandescent electrical light to fluorescent tube light, LED and the sky, and from the fresco painters of the Renaissance to artist Karen Kristin’s trompe l’oeil’s. As indeed, this is what Di Trapani learned: ‘to believe in artificial daylight, you must believe it comes from the sky.’*

In de Nimbus-serie maakt Smilde wolken in een divers scala aan indoor locaties, van koolmijnen tot kathedralen. Nimbus wolken zijn wolken die neerslag brengen. Ze worden gekenmerkt door hun lage hoogte, relatief donkere kleur ten gevolge van de waterdruppels, en groot volume. Smilde’s Nimbus werken tonen een voorbijgaand moment van aanwezigheid in de specifieke locaties. Ze verwijzen zowel naar de fysieke staat van de locatie als naar een moment van openbaring dat hoop en kwetsbaarheid, verlies en wording, dreiging en ontlading verbeeldt. Hij speelt zo in op de betekenissen die doorheen de tijd werden opgehangen aan het fenomeen van wolken. Smilde is vooral geïnteresseerd in het tijdelijke aspect van het werk.

Het bestaat slechts voor een paar seconden vooraleer het opnieuw uit elkaar valt. Wat overblijft, is de foto; het document van iets wat gebeurde op die locatie en nu verdwenen is.

In Nimbus D’Aspremont speelt de architectuur van het D’Aspremont-Lynden kasteel in Rekem in België een belangrijke rol voor het gevoel van het beeld. Smilde schrijft hierover: ‘Het contrast tussen het originele kasteel en het vroegere gebruik ervan als militair hospitaal en instelling voor mentale gezondheidszorg is nog steeds zichtbaar. Men kan stellen dat de ruimte dienst doet als sokkel voor het werk.’*

In the Nimbus series, Smilde creates clouds in a diverse range of indoor locations, from coalmines to cathedrals. Nimbus clouds are clouds that produce precipitation. They are characterised by their low altitude, darker colour due to the fact that they are dense in water, and great volume.

The works present a transitory moment of presence in those specific locations. They point both towards the physical state of the location as to the moment of revelation, pointing towards hope and vulnerability, loss or becoming. The artist plays into the many interpretations, which throughout time have been projected onto the phenomenon of clouds. Smilde is interested in the temporary aspect of the work. It’s there for a few seconds before it dissipates again. The work in the end only exists as a photograph, which functions as a document of something that happened on a specific location and has now disappeared.

In Nimbus D’Aspremont the architecture of the D’Aspremont-Lynden Castle in Rekem, Belgium, plays a significant role in the feel of the picture.

‘The contract between the original castle and its former use as a military hospital and mental institution is still visible.’ he writes. ‘You could say the spaces function as a plinth for the work.’*

Terwijl in de Nimbus-serie één beeld op de voorgrond treedt – de foto, niet de wolk zelf, wordt gepresenteerd in tentoonstellingen – verschuift bij Nimbus Atlas de aandacht naar het proces.

In deze installatie zie je hoe op drie slow motion video’s zelfgemaakte wolken verschijnen en verdwijnen in een leegte. Geen decor of drager meer voor het beeld, enkel de wolk zelf. Het beeldmateriaal werd opgenomen met een high speed camera in 480 frames per seconde, resulterend in een vertraagde visualisatie van hoe wolken groeien, van vorm veranderen en licht reflecteren.

Contrary to the Nimbus series, where one image takes centre stage – the photograph, not the cloud itself, is presented in exhibitions – Smilde shifts our attention to the process rather than the end result in Nimbus Atlas. The installation consists of three slow-motion videos depicting self-made clouds emerging and decomposing in a void. No décor or support for the image anymore, just the cloud. The footage was captured with a high speed camera at 480 frames per second resulting in a slowed down visualisation on how clouds grow, change shape and reflect light.

In de installatie Event Horizon dansen stofpartikels in een lichtstraal die traag de donkere ruimte scant. De bezoeker wordt uitgenodigd een gasmasker op te zetten en wordt getuige van de stille complexiteit van materie die met miljoenen fragmentjes een tijdelijk micro-universum vormen.

Bewust van de eigen adem, treedt de materie op de voorgrond, dansend in de licht- en luchtstromen van de black box, op de soundtrack van verre geluiden van mensen die de lege ruimte vullen.

Met de uitdagingen op vlak van ecologie, bevolkingsgroei en onze steeds groeiende noden in gedachten, zochten de broers Malstaf naar een manier om uit te zoomen en stil te staan bij ons tijdelijk bestaan op ‘ruimteschip aarde’. De bedoeling: ‘Een werk te maken met een minimum aan materiaal en een zo groot mogelijke ruimtelijke impact.’

In the installation Event Horizon dust particles are suspended in a beam of light that is slowly scanning a dark room. Visitors are invited to wear a protective gas mask and witness the silent complexity of matter with millions of fragments forming a temporary micro-universe. Conscious of one’s own breath, matter is taking centre stage, dancing in the light and airstreams of the black box with remote sounds of human masses and activity filling the otherwise empty room.

With environmental challenges, population growth and our ever-expanding needs in mind, the brothers Malstaf sought a way to zoom out and contemplate our temporary existence on spaceship Earth. The aim: ‘Making a work with a minimum amount of material and the biggest possible spatial impact’.

The Limitations of Logic and the Absence of Absolute Certainty is een artificiële tornado die het proces van een echte tornado nabootst. Hoewel de installatiewijze toont hoe het werk functioneert, erkent het terzelfdertijd dat er iets inherent onkenbaar en oncontroleerbaar is met betrekking tot de manier waarop natuurlijke en kunstmatig veroorzaakte tornado’s zich bewegen en gedragen.

De titel van dit werk is afgeleid van wiskundige Kurt Gödels onvolledigheidsstellingen, een tegelijk ingewikkelde en eenvoudige theorie die stelt dat er binnen de systemen dingen zijn die waar maar niet bewijsbaar zijn. Gödels stelling geldt niet alleen voor wiskunde, maar voor alles dat onderworpen is aan de wetten van de logica.

The Limitations of Logic and the Absence of Absolute Certainty is a man-made tornado, mimicking the processes that are conducive to real tornados. Although the installation willingly reveals the science behind it, at the same time the work acknowledges that there is something inherently unknowable and uncontrollable about the way in which naturally or artificially induced tornados move and behave. The title of the work is derived from mathematician Kurt Gödel’s ‘incompleteness theorem’, a simultaneously complicated and simple theory that states that within systems there are things that are true but not provable. Gödel’s theorem applies not just to math but to everything that is subject to the laws of logic.

Met The Limitations of Logic and the Absence of Absolute Certainty produceerde McClymont een reeks tekeningen op papier die de bewegingen en het pad van de tornado volgen en herproduceren.

De tekeningen worden beĂŻnvloed door traceerkaarten van orkanen die rasters gebruiken om een storm in kaart te brengen. De gekleurde tekeningen zijn gemaakt met behulp van de kleuren van de Beaufort windkracht schaal gereproduceerd in Indische inkt. Deze schaal wordt gebruikt om de windsnelheid te meten van 0 (blauw, rust) tot 12 (rood, orkaankracht). De tekenigen worden zo verbonden met de taal van weerkaarten en experiment.

Elke tekening begint als een raster van inktdruppeltjes, geplaatst onder de installatie. De ventilatoren worden voor een bepaalde tijd ingeschakeld om het pad van de tornado te traceren. Aangezien de tornado volledig onafgebakend is, wordt het geteisterd door de willekeurige, chaotische krachten van de turbulentie in de kamer. Deze maken de gekende draaibeweging op de vloer, waardoor de tornado een eigen antropomorf karakter krijgt. De reeks tekeningen proberen dit karakter te vatten; elk vertelt een uniek verhaal over de voortgang van de tornado’s over het papier, de beweging vastleggend in de tijd.

With the installation The Limitations of Logic and the Absence of Absolute Certainty, McClymont produced a series of drawings on paper that track the movement and path of the tornado. The drawings are influenced by hurricane tracking charts that use grids to map storm paths. The coloured drawings are made using the colours of the Beaufort Wind Force Scale reproduced in Indian ink. This scale is used to measure wind speed from 0 (blue, calm) to 12 (red, hurricane force), thus tying the drawings into the language of weather charts and experimentation.

Each drawing starts as a grid of ink drops, placed beneath the installation. The fans are turned on for a set period of time in order to trace the path of the tornado. As the tornado is completely unenclosed, it gets buffeted by the random, chaotic forces of turbulence within the room. These make the vortex snake around the floor, giving the tornado its own anthropomorphic character. The series of drawings capture that character, each telling a unique narrative of the tornado’s progress across the paper, capturing the movement over time.

In Nebulagramme Series werden een reeks wolken in de rand van het glas geĂŤtst. De witte ets smelt weg in het glas, lijkt bijna te verdwijnen en creĂŤert zo de illusie dat de wolk tussen twee microscopische slides werd gevangen. Charbonnel wil hiermee de vluchtige toestand van een wolk vastleggen en de waarneming van het beeld bevragen.

De natuur speelt een belangrijke rol in het werk van Charbonnel. Zo bestudeert en verzamelt ze naast wolken bijvoorbeeld ook de trillingen van het fluiten van de wind. Ze poogt in haar werk fenomenen waarvoor de mens altijd al een zekere fascinatie heeft gehad, te herontdekken.

In Nebulagramme Series a collection of clouds is etched into the glass. The white etching melts away in the translucent material, appearing to almost disappear and thus creating the illusion of the cloud being trapped between two microscopic slides. Charbonnel aims to capture the fleeting condition of a cloud, questioning the perception of the image.

Nature plays an important role in the work of Charbonnel. For instance, apart from clouds, she studies and collects the vibrations of the wind blowing. In her work, she aims to rediscover phenomena that have always intrigued people.

De installatie Inward Practice toont een stuntpiloot die zijn vluchtroutine probeert te internaliseren. Hij gebruikt zijn lichaam als vliegtuig, en memoriseert fysiek de routine door het nabootsen van de verschillende loops, spins en tuimelingen.

Zonder toestel vliegt hij in gedachten om elk mogelijk detail van de beweging te visualiseren.

Het vliegtuig, op perfectie afgestemd, moet hij naar zijn hand zetten, de krachten in het luchtruim beheersen, en de grenzen van zijn menselijke kunnen aftasten.

De video-installatie op twee schermen wordt aangevuld met een tekening van de vlucht, die gebruikt wordt om de routine in te oefenen. Zoals bij dansnotities, gebruiken stuntpiloten een notitiesysteem om hun vluchtpatronen te schetsen en over hun bewegingen in de lucht te communiceren.

The installation Inward Practice focuses on the attempt of an aerobatics pilot to internalise his flight routine. Using his body as an aircraft, his training is directed towards his muscle memory of the various loops, spins and rolls. Without his machine, he flies in his mind to envision every possible detail concerning his routine. His aircraft, tuned to perfection, needs to be mastered, the forces in airspace controlled, and the limitations of his body and mind challenged.

The two-channel video installation is complemented by a drawing of the flight, used to memorise the routine. Similar to dance notations, aerobatics pilots use a shorthand system to sketch their flight patterns and to communicate about their movement through the air.

De Paper Planes-serie bestaat uit zestien gevouwen papieren modellen van bestaande ontwerpen voor vliegtuigen die nooit werden ontwikkeld. Op basis van grotendeels online informatie, technische tekeningen en ‘kunstenaarsimpressies’, creëerde Knibbeler reconstructies. De vliegtuigjes bestaan nu voornamelijk op het internet, waar hun ontwerptekeningen worden gedeeld en bediscussieerd op fora voor vliegtuiggeschiedenis. Ze staan in de ogen van Knibbeler zowel voor mislukking als toekomstvisie. Enerzijds werden ze nooit gerealiseerd vanwege ontwerpfouten, budgettaire beperkingen of wegens gedateerd, anderzijds verbeeldt elk ontwerp een toekomstvisie en werden ze zo ook deel van de collectieve verbeelding. Knibbeler zegt hierover: ‘Sommige van deze ontwerpen zijn meer dan 80 jaar oud. Wat me opvalt is dat hoewel ze faalden als fysiek voertuig, ze nog steeds wereldwijd rondtoeren, als idee in virtuele vorm of als data.’* Elke foto is genoemd naar het vliegtuig waarop het werd gebaseerd en waarvan de korte geschiedenis is weergegeven op print. Knibbeler hield de gevouwen vliegtuigjes niet bij. Hij koos ervoor ze opnieuw open te plooien en te fotograferen. Zo documenteert hij zijn eigen interpretatie.

The Paper Planes series consists of sixteen folded paper models of actual aircraft designs that have never been realised. Based on information, technical drawings and ‘artist impressions’, predominantly found online, Knibbeler was able to create the reconstructions. These aircrafts now exist mainly on the Internet, where their design drawings are shared and discussed on fora for aviation history. Conceived but never realised, these ideas for aircraft represent failure on the one hand. Due to mistakes, lack of funding or by simply being outdated, their development programmes were terminated. On the other hand, the designs represent visions of a future and have become part of a collective imagination. Knibbeler explains: ‘some of these aircraft designs are over eighty years old and what struck me is that though they’ve failed as physical aircraft, they still fly around the world as ideas – in the virtual form of data.’* Each photograph is named after the aircraft on which it is based and comes with a short written history.

Sjoerd Knibbeler did not hold on to the folded paper models but chose to unfold and photograph them again, documenting his own interpretation of the models.

In Memory Station bevraagt Bilal Bahir in een reeks van twintig tekeningen zijn eigen geheugen over de lucht van Bagdad, van kindertijd tot nu. De installatie is een documentaire, een onderzoek naar het luchtruim van zijn geboortestad dat doorheen de recente geschiedenis verschillende vliegende objecten heeft gehost. Bilal Bahir tekent de objecten die hij zag in de lucht, te beginnen van in zijn kindertijd: de mobiel aan zijn wieg, een vlieger, een papieren vliegtuigje, maar ook imaginaire vliegende objecten uit de wereld van de mythologie en populaire sprookjesverhalen zoals verteld door moeders en grootmoeders. Toen de Golfoorlog begon, ontdekte Bilal als jong kind de donkere betekenis van vliegtuigen en raketten in de lucht. Zijn familie vluchtte van Bagdad naar het zuiden van het land. Verschrikt door de nachtelijke bomaanvallen verstopte Bilal zich vaak in de traditionele mantel van zijn grootmoeder. Het perspectief op de lucht dat hij als kind had, veranderde voor altijd door deze en de Amerikaanse oorlog.

In Memory Station, is elke tekening een halte, een moment uit Bilal Bahirs geheugen onlosmakelijk verbonden met de geschiedenis van zijn land. De tragedie van oorlog brengt hem bij de laatste halte: ballingschap.

In Memory Station Bilal Bahir questions his memory of the Baghdad sky, from his childhood up till today, through a series of 20 drawings. The installation is a documentary, a research into the sky of his city of birth that through the recent history supported different kinds of flying objects.

Counting his first memory as a tale, Bilal Bahir draws the objects from his childhood into the sky, starting with the mobile above his cot and other toys like a kite, a paper plane, but also including flying objects from Baghdadi children’s imagination world coming from mythology and popular tales as told by their mothers and grandmothers. When the Gulf War started, Bilal discovered as a young child the dark meaning of airplanes and missiles in the air. In that time his family escaped from Baghdad to find refuge in the south of the country.

Frightened by the exploding bombs in the dark sky of Baghdad Bilal often hid himself in the traditional mantle of his grandmother. His perspective on the sky of his childhood was changed forever by this war and the U.S. war. In Memory Station every drawing is a station: a moment taken out of Bilal Bahir’s memory that is inextricably linked with the history of his country. This tragedy of wars brings him to the last station: exile.

In de sculptuur El viaje nocturno presenteert de Spaanse kunstenaar Javier Pérez een hoofdkussen met twee voetafdrukken. We verplaatsen ons zo naar de nacht: de wereld van dromen en nachtmerries, het opstijgen uit het lichaam, het ontsnappen aan de zwaartekracht van deze wereld en het overstijgen van onze fysieke grenzen. Pérez maakte twee verschillende versies van dit werk, één in glas en de andere in albast, een materie dat poreus is aan licht en daarmee de dromerigheid van het werk onderstreept.

In zijn praktijk gaat Pérez op zoek naar de ongrijpbare diepte van het zijn, waarbij het menselijke lichaam vaak het uitgangspunt is van zijn poëtisch oeuvre opgebouwd uit tekeningen, fotografie, installaties, sculpturen, video en performance.

In the sculptural installation El viaje nocturno the Spanish visual artist Javier Pérez presents a pillow with two footprints. We are transported to the night: the world of dreams and nightmares, the escape from the body, from our worldly gravity, the triumph over our physical limitations. The artist made two versions of this piece, one in glass and another one in alabaster - a matter that is porous to light, thereby emphasising a dreamlike quality.

In his practice, Pérez searches for the elusive depth of being, whereby the human body is oftentimes the departure point of his poetic oeuvre which consists of drawings, photography, installation, sculpture, video and performance.

In opdracht van STUK ontwikkelde Frederic Geurts samen met zeven studenten burgerlijk ingenieur-architectuur o.l.v Prof. Mattias Schevenels (KU Leuven) de installatie Glorious Failure voor het STUK Binnenplein.

Geurts wou met dit werk in de context van Artefact een kritische reflectie bieden op de relatie tussen kunst en wetenschap. In Glorious Failure ontmoeten beiden elkaar als gelijke, maar wezenlijk verschillende partners met een gezamenlijke fascinatie voor de zwaartekracht. Mislukking staat centraal in het werk, als spel en als kantelmoment; het moment van invraagstelling. Het is voor Geurts de verderzetting van die fundamentele zoektocht naar de eigen kwetsbaarheid als mens.

Het werk neemt in Up in the Air een sleutelpositie in, gepositioneerd tussen een blik op het luchtruim en de elementen an sich enerzijds, en enkele perspectieven op ons huidige en mogelijks toekomstige gebruik van het luchtruim anderzijds.

Want in het utilitaire verhaal is er, net zoals in de samenleving in het algemeen en in wetenschap in het bijzonder, vooral aandacht voor succesverhalen. Het is echter op het moment van mislukken dat men een stap terug kan nemen en de wenselijkheid van het doel opnieuw in vraag kan stellen.

In response to a commission from STUK, Frederic Geurts together with seven students architectural engineering of Prof. Mattias Schevenels (University of Leuven) developed the installation Glorious Failure for the inner courtyard of STUK. In the context of Artefact, Geurts aimed to offer a critical reflection on the relation between art and science. In Glorious Failure both meet as equal yet fundamentally different partners with a common fascination for the powers of gravity. Glorious Failure proposes failure as a game and turning point: the moment of questioning. For Geurts it is the continuation of a fundamental search into human vulnerability.

The work takes a key position in Up in the Air between the observation of airspace and the elements within on the one hand, and a selection of perspectives on our current and possible future uses of airspace on the other. Since in the utilitarian perspective, much like in society at large, and science in particular, attention is mainly paid to stories of success. However, in these moments of failure one can take a step back and question again the desirability of the initial goals.

The Atmosphere, A Guide is een poster-essay waarin de menselijke invloed op het luchtruim en de sporen ervan, zij het chemisch, narratief, ruimtelijk of politiek, in kaart worden gebracht. Visueel verwijst het werk naar de Cloud Code Chart, een ander interpretatief hulpmiddel om de blik naar boven te leiden. The Atmosphere, A Guide visualiseert enkele manieren waarop de mensheid de atmosferen uit het verleden, heden en de toekomst bezet, vanop het zeeniveau tot in de exosfeer.

The Atmosphere, A Guide is a poster-essay depicting various human influences on the sky and their accumulated traces, whether chemical, narrative, spatial, or political. Visually referencing the Cloud Code Chart, another interpretive aid for looking up, the Guide visualises some ways humans occupy present, past, and future atmospheres, from sea level to the exosphere.

The accelerating crisis in climate change and the realization that humans are the primary cause of this change has raised questions about ownership and responsibility. Who “owns” the climate change crisis and who is responsible for mitigating and reversing it if possible? One overwhelming response by governments on an international level has been to propose a market solution, in essence, to sell the atmosphere. ANDREA POLLI, LECTURE 2011

Public Smog is een poging om een publiek park in de atmosfeer te creëren dat fluctueert in locatie en omvang. Het park wordt opgebouwd door financiële, juridische of politieke activiteiten die het openen voor publiek gebruik. Zo werden bijvoorbeeld emissierechten gekocht (NOX and CO2) in gereguleerde emissiemarkten waardoor ze ontoegankelijk werden voor de vervuilende industrieën. Deze activiteiten openden tijdelijke parken boven Zuid-Californië ( juni 2014), de Europese Unie (2006-2007) en de Verenigde Staten (2010). Daarnaast werd ook een reeks reclamepanelen verspreid in Douala, Kameroen in 2009, die voorspelden wat de voordelen, complicaties en implicaties zouden zijn van een Public Smog-actie boven Afrika.

Centraal in de installatie in Artefact staat de poging om de aardatmosfeer te erkennen als UNESCO Werelderfgoed, een poging die begon in 2006 en verder ontwikkeld werd in 2010 in de context van Documenta 13. Eerst werd Duitsland uitgenodigd, daarna alle UNESCO-natiestaten, om een coalitie te leiden naar het nominatieproces voor opname op de Werelderfgoed lijst.

Public Smog is a clean-air park in the atmosphere that fluctuates in location and scale. The park is constructed through financial, legal, or political activities that open it for public use. Activities to open Public Smog have included the purchase and retiring of emissions offsets (NOX and CO2) in regulated emissions schemes in the US and European Union, making them inaccessible to polluting industries. These activities opened temporary parks above Southern California (June 2004), the European Union (2006-7) and the United States (2010). Other activities to further Public Smog include a series of thirty billboards presented across Douala, Cameroon in 2009, prefiguring the benefits, complications, and implications of enacting Public Smog over Africa.

Taking centre stage in the installation at Artefact is the attempt to inscribe Earth’s Atmosphere on the UNESCO World Heritage List, begun in 2006, and developed more fully since 2010 in the context of Documenta 13. The undertaking involved first inviting Germany, then all UNESCO States Parties, to lead a coalition in initiating an extraordinary nomination process for inscription.

De installatie Smog Tasting: Smog Synthesizer van The Center for Genomic Gastronomy en Nicola Twilley is een experimentele eetstand die de geur en smaak van luchtpollutie van verschillende locaties en tijdstippen simuleert. De installatie bouwt verder op eerder werk van deze door kunstenaars geleide denktank, waarin het proeven van smog centraal stond. Geïnspireerd door het feit dat opgeklopt eiwit voor 90% uit lucht bestaat – volgens Harold McGee’s gids naar culinaire chemie, On Food and Cooking - ging The Center aan de slag en gebruikte ze de structurele kenmerken van meringuedeeg om luchtvervuiling op verschillende locaties te vergaren, te proeven en te vergelijken.

Edible Geography-auteur Nicola Twilley speculeerde verder op dit concept van ‘aeroir’ en het idee dat zowel stedelijke als niet-stedelijke omgevingen een unieke smaak kunnen bevatten. Ze ging op zoek naar de geschiedenis en technologie van smogwetenschap en bezocht de proceskamers van het Bourns College of Engineering in de Universiteit van California, Riverside om te leren hoe wetenschappers synthetische smog creëren in het lab.

With Smog Tasting: Smog Synthesizer the Center for Genomic Gastronomy and Nicola Twilley present an experimental food cart for simulating the smell and flavor of air pollution from various places and times. The installation builds on earlier smog-tasting work conducted by the artist-led think tank. In 2011, inspired by reading that an egg foam is 90 percent air in Harold McGee’s guide to culinary chemistry, On Food and Cooking, the Center used the structural properties of meringue batter to harvest air pollution in order to taste and compare smog from different locations.

Inspired by this project, Edible Geography-author Nicola Twilley began to speculate about the concept of ‘aeroir’ and the idea that both urban and non-urban atmospheres capture a unique taste of place. She researched the history and technology of smog science, visiting the atmospheric process chambers at the Bourns College of Engineering, at the University of California, Riverside, in order to learn how scientists actually create synthetic smog in the lab. Working together, and with advice from Professor David Cocker and Mary Kacarab at UC Riverside, the Center and Edible Geography have designed and fabricated a small-scale smog chamber and developed a range of synthetic smog recipes for different cities around the globe at different points in time. These recipes are based on four types of smog, commonly used by atmospheric scientists to characterise air pollution: photochemical smog, biogenic photochemical smog, classic “Pea Souper” smog and agricultural smog.

As Above Not Below is een immersieve installatie die de aanwezigheid van de onzichtbare infrastructuur van internationale luchtvaart en de bewegingen van de vliegtuigen erin, rond België in kaart brengt. Live data van passerende vliegtuigen wordt verzameld, en onthult zowel hun internationale identiteit als hun fysieke kenmerken. Deze data wordt in de installatie omgezet in een audio-installatie en een grote visualisatie geprojecteerd op de tentoonstellingsvloer. De data wordt onderschept via radiosignalen die live uitgezonden worden door de vliegtuigen, een vorm van directe toegang gefaciliteerd door recente ontwikkelingen in open source software en software defined radio (SDR).

De soundscapes worden gemaakt met behulp van geluiden live gebruikt in Air Traffic Control uitzendingen van de controlecentra en torens, gericht aan de vliegtuigen die Leuven benaderen en die komen uit landen waar het toegelaten is deze informatie te beluisteren (België, Nederland, Luxemburg en Frankrijk). Logistieke infrastructuur wordt vaak ontworpen om onzichtbaar te zijn, de immateriële kwaliteiten van lucht vergroten deze onzichtbaarheid nog uit. As Above Not Below onthult de bewegingen, patronen, functies en politiek van de geconnecteerde logistieke en wetgevende infrastructuur die het luchtruim boven Leuven doorkruist. Het creëert zo inzicht in de aanwezigheid en het functioneren van deze doordringende systemen.

As Above Not Below is an immersive installation which materialises the presence of the unseen infrastructure of international airspace, and the movement of vessels across it, which surround Belgium. Live data is gathered from planes as they pass nearby, revealing their physical attributes as well as their international identity. This data is transformed into an ambisonic sound installation and large projected visualisation map of the surrounding area on the gallery floor. The data is intercepted live via radio transmissions from the vessels, creating a form of direct access enabled by recent developments in open source software and software defined radio (SDR).

The soundscapes are composed using live Air Traffic Control (ATC) transmissions from control centres and towers assigned to planes that are approaching Leuven from countries where it is permissible to listen in on this information (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France). Vessels approaching from Germany - where it is illegal to intercept ATC communications - are represented by external sounds of plane engines. The data visualisations enable exploration of the friction between the materiality and topology of ‘physical’ state boundaries and their location in the air.

Logistical and regulatory infrastructures are often designed to be hidden and out of sight, with the immaterial qualities of air further exacerbating this invisibility. As Above Not Below reveals the movements, patterns, functions and politics of the interweaving logistical and regulatory infrastructure running through the airspace above Leuven, inviting insight into their presence and operation.

Het Drone Aviary-project, een onderzoeksproject van The Superflux Lab, is een onderzoek naar het sociale, politieke en culturele potentieel van drone technologie in de civiele ruimte. Doorheen een reeks installaties, films en publicaties tracht het project een blik te werpen op een stad in de nabije toekomst, waar ‘intelligente’, semi-autonome en genetwerkte vliegende tuigjes onze leefruimte delen.

De installatie in STUK is opgebouwd uit een film die een familie van vijf drones introduceert, en gaat gepaard met een audio-narratief van Warren Ellis. De film zinspeelt op een wereld waarin het ‘netwerk’ fysieke autonomie krijgt, zich doorheen de wereld beweegt, autonoom beslissingen neemt en onze levens op vaak ondoorzichtige, maar ingrijpende manieren beïnvloedt. Een speculatieve map toont hoe de fysieke en digitale infrastructuur verweven wordt in een stad waarin smart technologies thuis zijn. Elk van de vijf drones in de film is ontworpen om symbool te staan voor het samensmelten van de bredere sociale en technologische trends met de specifieke taken en functies die volging krijgen bij drone-enthousiastelingen en -ondernemers. Madison, het vliegende reclamebord, Newsbreaker, de mediadrone, Nightwatchman, de bewakingsdrone, Routehawk, de verkeersmanagementassistent en Flycam, de Instadrone – elk van hen speelt in op het veld van de commerciële drones zoals het al bestaat of in volle voorbereiding is in industrie. Nu de Europese Commissie werkt aan een wettelijk kader voor het civiel gebruik van drones, voorzien voor begin 2016, worden die nabije toekomstscenario’s meer en meer plausibel. The Drone Aviary - an R&D project from The Superflux Lab - is an investigation of the social, political and cultural potential of drone technology as it enters civil space. Through a series of ongoing installations, films and publications, the project aims to give a glimpse into a near-future city with ‘intelligent’ semi autonomous, networked, flying machines.

The installation in STUK includes a film introducing a family of five drones and an accompanying narrated editorial by Warren Ellis. The film hints at a world where the ‘network’ begins to gain physical autonomy, moving through and making decisions about the world, influencing our lives in often opaque yet profound ways. A speculative map highlights where physical and digital infrastructures merge as our cities become the natural habitat for ‘smart’ technologies. Each of the five drones presented in the film is designed to be symbolic of the convergence of wider social and technological trends with specific tasks and functions that are gaining popularity amongst drone enthusiasts and entrepreneurs. From Madison, the flying billboard, to Newsbreaker, the media drone; Nightwatchman, the surveillance drone; Routehawk, the traffic management assistant and finally Flycam, the Instadrone – each of them play into a field of commercial drones either already in use or in full preparation in the industry. With the European Commission working towards a basic regulatory framework for the civil use of drones by early 2016, these near future scenarios are becoming more and more plausible, but are they desirable?

Onze voorouders konden een roofvogel al van veraf herkennen aan hun silhouet. Zijn we zelf nog in staat om de roofvogels van vandaag te herkennen? De Amerikaanse Luchtvaartautoriteit (FAA) heeft in 2012 voorspeld dat er binnen 20 jaar zo’n 30.000 drones boven Amerika zullen vliegen. Als deze elektronische roofvogels van de toekomst wijdverspreid zullen zijn, moeten we ze leren herkennen. Ontwerper Ruben Pater creëerde Drone Survival Guide als een gids om onszelf en toekomstige generaties vertrouwd te maken met een veranderende technologische omgeving.

Het document bevat de silhouetten van de meest gebruikte drones van nu en de nabije toekomst. Bij elke drone wordt aangegeven welk land ze inzet en of de drone kan worden gebruikt voor surveillance of aanvallen. Alle drones zijn naar schaal getekend om de groottes inzichtelijk te maken. In de gids staan zowel commerciële drones van minder dan een meter tot grote militaire drones zoals de Global Hawk van 39,9 meter spanwijdte. De gids zelf is gedrukt op papier met een reflecterende laag, zodat hij gebruikt kan worden om zonlicht te weerkaatsen in de camera van de drone. Het spiegelende materiaal herinnert ons er ook aan dat dronesurveillance uiteindelijk mensen zijn die elkaar bekijken.

Our ancestors could spot natural predators from far by their silhouettes. Are we equally aware of the predators of present-day? The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) predicted in 2012 that within 20 years there could be as many as 30.000 drones flying over U.S. soil alone. As robotic birds will become commonplace in the near future we should be prepared to identify them. With Drone Survival Guide, designer Ruben Pater created a guide to familiarise ourselves and future generations with a changing technological environment.

The document contains the silhouettes of the most common drone species used today and in the near future. Each indicating nationality and whether they are used for surveillance only or for deadly force. All drones are drawn in scale for size indication. From the smallest consumer drones measuring less than a metre, up to the Global Hawk with a wingspan of 39,9 meter. The guide itself is printed on paper with a reflective metallic coating, so it can be used to reflect sunlight into the drone’s camera system. The mirrored material also reminds us that drone surveillance is ultimately people watching people. In a way we are looking at ourselves through sophisticated mirrors.

Militaire drones vliegen op grote hoogte en worden vaker gehoord dan gezien. Zelfs de oorsprong van het woord ‘drone’ gaat terug naar geluid, meerbepaald het geluid van een mannelijke honingbij. Het geluid van drones in conflictgebied creëert soundscapes van terreur die urenlang kunnen duren. Het zoemen van de motoren genereerde al bijnamen zoals ‘zanana’ in Palestina of ‘bangana’ in Pakistan.

Much of the discussion around unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) is directed towards its capabilities of surveillance and attack. Less known, is that for those living in areas of conflict, the continuous engine sound of the drones has devastating psychological effects. Military drones fly at high altitudes and are more easily heard than seen. Even the origin of the word ‘drone’ is rooted in sound and comes from the sound of the male honeybee. The sound of drones in areas of conflict create soundscapes of terror that can go on for many hours. The buzzing of the engines have generated nicknames like ‘zanana‘ in Palestine and ‘bangana’ in Pakistan.

A Study into 21st Century Drone Acoustics is an auditive investigation by composer Gonçalo F. Cardoso (Discrepant records) and designer Ruben Pater (Drone Survival Guide). What kind of engines are drones equipped with? What do they sound like? What are the psychological effects of the sounds in areas of conflict? The sound installation in Artefact is based on field recordings of 17 drone types, ranging from small consumer drones to large military drones.

Matilda is een opgezette duif, uitgerust met een videocamera. In de 19de en het begin van de 20ste eeuw werden postduiven intensief ingezet voor het verdelen van de post wat vooral erg nuttig bleek in tijden van oorlog voor het verzenden of overbrengen van telegrammen die gevoelige informatie bevatten. Hoewel luchtfotografie door duiven nooit een uitgebreide praktijk werd, kunnen deze diertjes uitgerust met miniatuurcamera’s gezien worden als de historische voorlopers van de hedendaagse drones. Naast het eigenlijke gebruik van postduiven in militaire context als bewakingsmiddel en om informatie te verzamelen, waren zij inderdaad onbemande luchtvoertuigen. Het historisch belang van de duif had er misschien geheel anders uitgezien als de vooruitgang op het vlak van luchtvaart niet zo sterk zijn geweest.

Matilda is a taxidermied pigeon, suited with a video camera. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, homing pigeons were already extensively used for delivering mail, which proved to be especially useful during war times to transport sensitive telegrams from one place to another. Notwithstanding the fact that the use of pigeon photography never became very extensive, it can be argued that these pigeons equipped with cameras were the historical predecessors of contemporary drones. Besides actually being used in military contexts as a means of surveillance and collecting intelligence, they were indeed unmanned aerial instruments, which might have had a different historical importance if it wasn’t for the quick and strong progress in the field of aviation.

De film On Air, oorspronkelijk geproduceerd voor de Sharjah biënnale, speelt zich af in het woestijnlandschap van de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten.

Hoofdrolspelers zijn een valkenier en zijn valk, uitgerust met een microcamera in de nek. De film alterneert tussen overzichtsbeelden en subjectieve shots van de vogel in vlucht en stelt vragen naar perspectief of referentiepunt. Meer bepaald het vogelperspectief en verglijdend perspectief – zoals ook verkend in de films Radio Ghost (2004), Uraniborg (2012) en Soleil Noir (2014) - komen aan bod.

Grasso eigent zich een oude jachtmethode toe en transformeert de vogel in een spion. Hij stelt het gebruik van drones in die delen van de wereld aan de kaart en spoort ons aan na te denken over onze aanwezigheid in de wereld en de invasie van wetenschap en technologie.

Originally produced for the Sharjah biennial, the film On Air takes place in the desert landscapes of the United Arab Emirates. It stages a falconer and his falcon, with a micro-camera installed on its back. Alternating between contextual views and subjective shots taken from the bird as it flies, the film poses the question of point of view, in particular the aerial and floating point of view – also explored in the films Radio Ghost (2004), Uraniborg (2012) and Soleil Noir (2014).

Appropriating a traditional hunting method, Grasso transforms the bird into a spying tool, addressing the use of drones in that part of the world.

He prompts us to think about our presence in the world, and the invasion of science and technology.

We call it in, and we’re given all the clearances that are necessary, all the approvals and everything else, and then we do something called the Light of God - the Marines like to call it the Light of God. It’s a laser targeting marker. We just send out a beam of laser and when the troops put on their night vision goggles they’ll just see this light that looks like it’s coming from heaven. Right on the spot, coming out of nowhere, from the sky. It’s quite beautiful. OMER FAST – FIVE THOUSAND FEET IS THE BEST, 2011 (EXCERPT).

The Light of God tracht als gemanipuleerde foto iets te visualiseren dat tot zover louter bestaat in de verhalen van militair personeel die het zagen.

‘The light of God’ is een met laserlicht uitgeruste markeerder uitgezonden door een vliegende drone, en dat enkel kan gezien worden door een nachtkijker. Dit principe wordt in Afghanistan en Irak gebruikt om het doelwit van een hellfire raket aanval mee te bepalen.

Brits kunstenaar James Bridle kon geen foto’s van dit fenomeen terugvinden, dus maakte hij er één gebaseerd op met laser uitgeruste richtsystemen en een Creative Commons gelicenseerde foto van Rob Bakker van de Iraakse woestijn. The Light of God symboliseert een technologie die voorbij de mens gaat, en die zich manifesteert met de koude precisie van een goddelijke kracht.

Bridle’s werk ontstaat uit een diepe bezorgdheid over de toenemende onzichtbare en naadloze militaire technologieën die een context doen ontstaan voor ‘onzichtbare, onverklaarbare en eindeloze oorlogen’.

The Light of God is a manipulated photograph attempting to make visible to us something that only exists, so far, in the accounts of the military personnel who saw it. ‘The light of God’ is a laser targeting marker emitted by a flying drone that can be seen only when wearing night vision goggles, used in Afghanistan and Iraq to point to the target of a hellfire missile strike.

Bridle couldn’t find any pictures of ‘the light of God’, so he made one based on laser targeting night systems and a Creative Commons-licensed photograph of the Iraqi desert by Rob Bakker.

The image is an effective symbol of technology that has gone far beyond the human, and that manifests itself with the cold precision of a divine force.

Bridle’s work stems from a deep concern with increasingly invisible and seamless military technologies that are creating the context for ‘secret, unaccountable, endless wars’.

JUHA VAN ‘T ZELFDE IN ‘OVER BUNKERS EN BITCOINS – EEN TWEEGESPREK’, TUBELIGHT, 95

Het Drone Strike-onderzoek van Forensic Architecture is een reeks case studies waarin oorlogsvoering door drones vanuit een ruimtelijk perspectief onderzocht wordt. Het doel was de weinig begrepen architecurale dimensie van dit soort aanvallen beter te vatten.

Het onderzoek omvatte een ruimtelijke analyse van een selectie droneaanvallen in Pakistan, Gaza en Yemen. In Up in the Air worden twee cases gepresenteerd: een aanval in Mir Ali op 4 oktober 2010 en één in Miranshah op 30 maart 2012, beide in Noord-Waziristan, Pakistan. Eén van de overlevenden van de Mir Ali-aanval, waarbij vijf mensen om het leven kwamen, is een Duitse vrouw die op dat moment in het huis woonde met haar man en tweejarig zoontje. Samen met Forensic Architecture bouwde deze getuige een digitaal model van haar huis dat niet meer bestaat. Het maken van de digitale maquette creëert een link tussen architectuur, geheugen en vernieling. De analyse van de Miranshahzaak focust op een videogetuigenis die uit Noord-Waziristan werd gesmokkeld om een droneaanval te reconstrueren in tijd en ruimte en het voorval te onderzoeken. Forensic Architecture’s Drone Strike investigation is a series of case studies intended to investigate the spatial mapping of drone warfare, with the aim to explore the little understood architectural dimension of this form of attack.

The analysis involved an architectural examination of a selection of strikes in Pakistan, Gaza, and Yemen. In Up in the Air, Forensic Architecture presents two cases: a strike in Mir Ali on October 4, 2010 and in Miranshah on March 30, 2012, both in North Waziristan, Pakistan. One of the surviving witnesses to the Mir Ali strike, which killed five people, is a German woman who lived in the house at the time with her two-year-old boy and her husband. Together with Forensic Architecture this witness built a digital model of her home that no longer exists. The process of model building establishes a link between architecture, memory and destruction. The analysis of the Miranshah case focuses on a video testimony smuggled out of North Waziristan, in order to reconstruct the space of the strike and interrogate the event. This footage revealed a great deal beyond what appeared to be chaotic images of rubble and ruin.

Having worked on the Rafah project quite a bit, I have found a strange poetry in these bomb plumes. Their obscure ever-changing morphology offers a time signature for us, but they also manifest a very significant moment when architecture turns into dust and its image becomes an abstraction of all the lives who have also disappeared within the cloud. Voor het project Rafah: Black Friday werkte Forensic Architecture samen met Amnesty International aan een gedetailleerde reconstructie van de feiten die plaatsvonden in Rafah, Gaza, van 1 tot 4 augustus 2014. Om een reconstructie in tijd en ruimte te kunnen maken op basis van gevonden beelden en video’s op mainstream- en sociale media, creëerde Forensic Architecture een archief van rookwolken. Ze gebruikten die wolken als vingerafdrukken om de aanvallen te situeren door de vorm van de wolken te trianguleren en de ontwikkeling ervan te timen. De aanval op de Al Tannurbuurt werd uitgebreid vastgelegd, en werd daarom het scharniermoment van waaruit Forensic Architecture de feiten van die dag kon reconstrueren. In dit incident, kon men vaststellen dat de gedropte bommen elk een gewicht van één ton hadden; de zwaarste binnen de Israëlische munitie.

For the project Rafah: Black Friday Forensic Architecture collaborated with Amnesty International to provide a detailed reconstruction of the events in Rafah, Gaza, from 1 August until 4 August 2014.

In order to reconstruct the timeline of battle from images and videos found on mainstream and social media, Forensic Architecture created an archive of smoke clouds and used these clouds as fingerprints to locate the strikes by triangulating the shape of the clouds and timing their development. The strike on the Al Tannur neighbourhood was extensively recorded and therefore became the hinge that allowed Forensic Architecture to unlock the whole day of events. In this incident they were able to identify the airdropped bombs to be of one tonne each, the largest rank within the Israeli arsenal.

The idea of creating a protective shield against tornadoes was formulated in 2004 by the Russian scientist Vladimir Pudov, at the Institute for Experimental Meteorology, Obninsk. In 2007, we travelled to Obninsk to interview him for our film The Weather War. (…). We were intrigued by the scope of his idea of being able to affect the most powerful weather phenomenon on Earth, and decided to take up the challenge and build it for him. The Weather War is een documentaire/kunstfilm en een collectie van sculpturen over de pogingen van de mens om het weer te controleren. In een mix van land art performance en road movie, reisde het Zweedse kunstenaarsduo Bigert & Bergström eind mei 2011 naar de Amerikaanse Mid-West, samen met de Canadese meteoroloog en stormenjager Mark Robinson. Het doel was om een tornado na te jagen en de uitvinding - De Tornado Diverter - te gebruiken om de naderende tornado af te leiden. Deze sculpturale machine, die naar de theorie van de Russische wetenschapper Vladimir Pudov werd gebouwd, heeft een negatieve voltage van 100.000 volt, die de positieve lading van de tornado zou afstoten, wat volgens de theorie van Pudov de reden is dat de tornado de grond raakt.

Onderweg zien we historische voorbeelden van hoe de wetenschap van de meteorologie ontwikkelde in symbiose met militaire doelen, en hoe deze visies uitmondden in moderne ideeën van geo-engineering. Deze controversiële ideeën met socio-politieke gevolgen sporen ons aan te vragen wie bevoegd is het weer of weersomstandigheden te beheersen of te veranderen.

In STUK worden de film en de Tornado Diverter geflankeerd door een selectie van sculpturen en objecten uit de film; Church Tower Hail Cannon, 2012 verwijst naar de dubbele aanpak van Italië in het beschermen van de wijngaarden, van religie tot anti-hagelkanonnen, Watershed, 2012 refereert aan het stijgende waterpeil in Bangladesh, terwijl Joplin Trees, 2012 de veldslag na de destructieve tornado van 22 mei 2011 in Joplin, VS weergeeft.

The Weather War is a documentary/art film and collection of sculptures about man’s attempts to control the weather. In a blend of land art performance and road movie, Swedish artist duo Bigert & Bergström travelled to the Mid-West of the US at the end of May 2011 together with Canadian meteorologist and storm chaser Mark Robinson. Their goal was to hunt down a tornado and place an invention - The Tornado Diverter - in front of the approaching twister. This sculptural machine, built on a theory by Russian scientist Vladimir Pudov, radiates 100.000 negative volts and will repel the positive charge of the tornado, which the theory holds to be the reason for it to touch ground.

Along the way, we see historical examples of how the science of meteorology developed in symbiosis with military goals and how these visions evolved into modern ideas of geo-engineering. These controversial ideas with socio-political consequences spotlight the big question of who is really entitled to modify the weather.

In STUK, the film and Tornado Diverter are flanked by a selection of sculptures and objects extracted from the film; Church Tower Hail Cannon, 2012 points towards Italy’s dual approach to protecting vineyards, from religious faith to anti-hail cannons, Watershed, 2012 references Bangladesh floods and Joplin Trees, 2012, documents the aftermath of the destructive tornado wiping out parts of Joplin, USA on May 22nd, 2011.

In the Robot Skies is de eerste narratieve kortfilm volledig gefilmd met drones. De film werd opgenomen, in samenwerking met de onderzoekseenheid Beeld en Spraakverwerking van het Departement Elektrotechniek van de KU Leuven, door een speciaal hiervoor ontworpen zwerm cameradrones, elk uitgerust met een eigen verzameling aan cinematografische regels en gedragingen. In the Robot Skies onderzoekt de drone als cultureel object, niet enkel als nieuw instrument voor beeldende verhaalvertelling, maar ook als katalysator voor een nieuwe verzameling van stedelijke subculturen. Zoals de New Yorkse metro van de jaren 1980 aan de wieg stond van een jongerencultuur van wild style graffiti en hip hop, zo zal het tijdperk van drones als smart city infrastructuur, een nieuw netwerk creëren van bewakingsactivisten en drone hackers. Door de ogen van de drones zien we twee tieners die elk op politiebevel zich beperkt weten tot de grenzen van hun sociale woningblok in Londen. Een netwerk van drones bewaken de woonblokken als een zwerm CCTV-camera’s en houden de twee hoofdpersonages gescheiden. We zien hoe ze elkaar briefjes sturen, gebruikmakend van hun eigen gehackte en uitgedoste drone. Als twee kinderen in een ouderwets klaslokaal, zien we ze berichtjes schrijven, hun technologie naar de hand zettend. Ze sturen hun drones heen en weer terwijl ze zelf constant blijven bewegen om de permanent aanwezige bewakingsdrones te ontwijken. In deze stad van de toekomst zijn de drones zowel de uitvoerders van politiebewaking, als de gecoöpteerde vehikels via dewelke tieners verliefd worden.

In the Robot Skies is the world’s first narrative short film, shot entirely through drones. In collaboration with the Processing Speech and Images research unit from the Department of Electrical Engineering at KU Leuven the film is captured by a specially developed flock of camera drones each with their own set of cinematic rules and behaviours. The film explores the drone as a cultural object, not just as a new instrument of visual storytelling but also as the catalyst for a new collection of urban subcultures. In the same way the New York subway car of the 80s gave birth to a youth culture of wild style graffiti and hip hop, the age of ubiquitous drones as smart city infrastructure will create a new network of surveillance activists and drone hackers.

Through the eyes of the drone, we see two teenagers each held by police order within the digital confines of their council estate tower block in London. A network of drones survey the council estates, as a roving flock off CCTV cameras and our two characters are kept apart by this autonomous aerial infrastructure. We watch as they pass notes to each other via their own hacked and decorated drone, like kids in an old fashioned classroom, scribbling messages, tagging their technology.

We watch as they fly their drones back and forth to each other, whilst constantly running around the council estate towers to try and avoid the surveillance drones that are always overhead. In this near future city, drones are the agents of state surveillance but also become co-opted as the aerial vehicles through which two teens fall in love.

THIS NEWLY COMMISSIONED WORK IS the first STUK-KU Leuven coproduction and was developed in close collaboration with the KU Leuven Processing Speech and Images research unit from the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) at KU Leuven, represented by Prof. Dr. Toon Goedemé.

How much do you really see, how conscious are you of your daily surrounding?

Voor het Silent Sky Project nodigt Nederlands kunstenaar Rob Sweere mensen uit om samen in een bijzondere context, liggend op de rug, naar de hemel te kijken. Samen met anderen kijk je vanuit je eigen innerlijke universum naar een ander universum. Of misschien ervaar je dat als één en hetzelfde? Sweere creëert samen met de deelnemers een gelegenheid om hun plek op deze aardbol op een andere manier te ervaren.

Het Silent Sky Project is een participatiekunstwerk dat sinds 2004 op verschillende plekken over de hele wereld werd uitgevoerd. Op 10 februari 2016, vindt om 12u00 de 69ste editie plaats op het Ladeuzeplein in Leuven. Na een korte inleiding in de Centrale Bibliotheek start de 30 minuten durende performance, gevolgd door een nagesprek bij een verwarmende kop soep. Inschrijven is verplicht via ticket@stuk.be. In the Silent Sky Project, Dutch artist Rob Sweere invites people to collectively watch the sky, lying on their backs in a particular setting. Together with others, you are looking from your own inner universe into another universe, and perhaps simultaneously experiencing that this is one and the same thing. Together with the participants, Sweere creates an environment in which to experience one’s place on Earth in a different way.

The Silent Sky Project is a participatory art project that since 2004 took place in different parts of the world. On 10 February, 2016, the 69th edition will take place on the Ladeuzeplein in Leuven.

After a short introduction in the Central Library, the 30-minute performance will start, followed by a short debriefing over a cup of warming soup.

Vliegen, liggen, in gedachten

V.L.I.G. is een klankinstallatie waarin je wordt uitgenodigd om te gaan liggen en te kijken en luisteren naar een vlieger in de lucht. Op de vlieger zijn sensoren gemonteerd om de luchtstroom van de wind te meten, de druk op het doek, de turbulentie van de staart en de versnelling van de beweging. De data van de sensoren wordt draadloos verstuurd naar een computer waar algoritmes het geluid van een contactmicrofoon op de vliegerlijn transformeren. Meditatief of net avontuurlijk; de live-ervaring is geheel afhankelijk van de al dan niet standvastige stroom van de wind.

In de context van Artefact 2016: Up in the Air, werd V.L.I.G. aangepast voor een presentatie op het dak en het Koninginnenbalkon van STUK.

V.L.I.G. is a sound installation in which you are invited to lie down and look at the kite, while hearing the sound of its line in the sky. Mounted on the kite are sensors to measure the flow of the wind, the pressure on the cloth, the turbulence of the tail, and the acceleration of the movement. The data from the sensors is transmitted wireless to a computer where it is used in algorithms to transform the sound picked up by a contact microphone on the line. Meditative or eventful; the live experience is completely dependent upon the steady or unsteady flow of the wind.

In the context of Artefact 2016: Up in the Air, V.L.I.G. was adapted to be presented on the roof and the Queens balcony of STUK.

In de pre-moderne en moderne kunst, werden de figuren van wind en adem veelal op een figuratieve manier weergegeven. In de hedendaagse kunsten echter, worden beide figuren gebruikt als een intense figuratieve kracht die de visuele kwaliteit van een beeld in vraag stelt en het in een tactiele ruimte van sensaties omvormt. In zijn lezing, brengt Dr. Ionescu een aantal sleutelmomenten van deze artistieke metamorfose in kaart.

In pre-modern and modern art, the wind and the breath have been figuratively represented. In contemporary arts, however, both figures have been employed as intensive figural forces that question the visual quality of an image and transform it in a tactile space of sensations. In his lecture, Dr. Ionescu maps out a few key moments of this artistic metamorphosis.

Wolken worden vaak gebruikt als metafoor voor ‘het mogelijke’: we projecteren onze verbeelding op de wolken. Maar wat als we ons tussen die wolken bevinden? In zijn lezing reflecteert Daniel Blanga-Gubbay over het concept van ‘het mogelijke’ en de wisselwerking tussen afstand en tastbare nabijheid. In conferenties worden beelden vaak gebruikt om een discours te illustreren. Wat als deze beelden tegelijk verschijnen en verschillende denkrichtingen suggereren?

Clouds have often been seen as metaphor of the possible: we project our imagination being among them. But what if the clouds were among us? Daniel Blanga-Gubbay reflects on the use of the concept of the possible between distance and material proximity.

Artefact Music Festival - Gratis openingsavond

DI 9 FEB LORENZO SENNI PRESENTS AAT [belgian premiere] + HIELE + HANTRAX 20u00, STUK LABOZAAL

Een avond met drie heren uit het (nu nog) underground dancecircuit met een verfrissende en tegendraadse blik.

An evening hosted by 3 gentlemen from the underground dance circuit with a refreshing and contrary view.

De veelbesproken Italiaanse muzikant Lorenzo Senni en labelbaas van het spannende Presto?! is wellicht één van de meest inventieve elektronica-artiesten van de afgelopen jaren. Met zijn onderzoekende aanpak deconstructrueert hij klanken uit de nineties-rave- en clubmuziek om die nadien te lijmen tot een heel nieuw genre: ‘Pointillistische Trance’. Zijn project AAT (Advanced Abstract Trance) start met het nauwkeurig dissecteren van de zogenaamde euforische ‘buildup’ uit de elektronische dansmuziek en brengt die opnieuw naar buiten als een overweldigende, introspectieve en steriele sfeerzetting waarbij het publiek opgeschrikt wordt met krachtige strobo’s en CO2-kanonnen. Een verwarrende maar speelse ervaring die Senni’s ondeugende stijl typeert.

The famous Italian musician Lorenzo Senni, also label owner of the thrilling Presto?!label, is probably one of the most inventive artists in the contemporary electronic music scene. With his investigative approach he deconstructs the sounds of the nineties club and rave scene to recontruct them to a whole new style: ‘Pointillistic Trance’. With his project AAT (Advanced Abstract Trance) he starts with dissecting the so called euphoric ‘buildup’ from the electronic dance music to put it out again in an overwhelming, introspective and sterile atmosphere where he frightens the audience with powerful stroboscopic lights and CO2 cannons.

A confusing, but playful experience that defines Senni’s rascally character.

De Antwerpse, ondertussen in Londen wonende elektronica-producer Roman Hiele is ongetwijfeld ‘one to watch’ in de Belgische muziekscene. Deze geschoolde contrabassist die toch koos voor synths en elektronica, wordt vaak vergeleken met Aphex Twin vanwege de drum ‘n’ bassgeluiden in zijn uitermate eclectische dance. Het botst en gaat alle kanten uit, en het klinkt fantastisch.

Eveneens uit Antwerpen en ‘back to the future’ gaat Hantrax. Hantrax is het solo-project van toetsenist en producer Han Swolfs die een verkwikkende boost geeft aan de late 80s- en 90s-revival.

We horen invloeden uit EBM, Robert Schumann, 70s-eroticasoundtracks en old school hip hop en een vleugje Sinksenfoor.

Antwerp-born, London-based producer Roman Hiele is definitely ‘one to watch’ in the Belgian music scene. A classically trained musician who chose to work with synts and electronics. His musical style is often compared to Aphex Twin: eclectic drum ’n bass styled-music that goes in all directions and sounds fantastic.

Also from Antwerp and ‘back to the future’ is Hantrax, the moniker of keyboard player and producer Han Swolfs. Hantrax boosts the late 80s and 90s revival. We hear influences out of EBM, Robert Schumann, 70s erotica soundtracks and old skool hip hop and a dash of ‘Sinksenfoor’.

De Brit Oscar Powell wou muziek horen die nog niet bestond dus besloot hij ze zelf te maken. Hij behoort tot die kleine pool van artiesten wiens muziek een stijl an sich is. Invloeden vond hij bij Ike Yard, DNA en James Chance, maar evengoed bij Suicide. Hij mixt moderne club muziek genadeloos met no wave en post-punk. Voor zijn track Insomiac gebruikte hij een sample uit een oude opname van Big Black, waarna Steve Albini zijn afschuw voor dansmuziek uitdrukte met het citaat: ‘I detest club culture as deeply as I detest anything on earth. So I am against what you’re into, and an enemy of where you come from but I have no problem with what you’re doing...’ Avontuurlijke, rechttoe rechtaan en experimentele techno met een post-punk attitude die de huidige clubcultuur een flinke dreun verkoopt. Samen met beste vriend Jaime Williams runt hij het label Diagonal, waarop zeer boeiende leftfield elektronica-artiesten als de fameuze Russell Haswell en Regis hun ei kwijt kunnen. Powell speelt voor het eerst zijn liveset in België.

De in Berlijn wonende Nieuw-Zeelandse producer FIS is een mooie aanwinst voor het boeiende Tri Angle label. Zijn amorfe en ambigue klankenpalet met een abstracte drum is doordrongen met zware basstexturen. Op zijn debuutalbum The Quicksand Is Going Now, begraaft hij zijn beats diep in een dense massa van korrelige ontzagwekkende klanken.

De Brusselse sounddesigner Sagat en lid van het collectief Bepotel. Zijn laatste plaat Melting The Earth Onto The Body Without Organs toont aan dat elektronica heel warm en tastbaar kan klinken.

Spannende groovy ritmes duiken in de diepste donkere dub. Scherpe funk gebracht in technofrequenties. Reverb en delays klinken smeuïg als boterkoeken. Een tegelijk vertrouwd en nieuw geluid.

The British producer Oscar Powell wanted to hear music that didn’t exist so he decided to make it himself. He is part of a small group of musicians whose music is a style on it’s own. He was influenced by Ike Yard, DNA and James Chance, but also by bands like Suicide. He mixes modern club music with no wave and post-punk without any mercy.

For his track Insomniac he used a sample from an old recording of Big Black. After asking Steve Albini for sample clearance, the latter expressed his disgust for dance music: ‘I detest club culture as deeply as I detest anything on earth. So I am against what you’re into, and an enemy of where you come from but I have no problem with what you’re doing...’

Adventurous, straightforward and experimental techno with a post-punk attitude that smacks in the contemporary club culture. Together with his best friend Jaime Williams he runs the label Diagonal with interesting leftfield artists such as Russell Haswell and Regis. This will be the premiere of his live set in Belgium.

The Berlin-based New-Zealander FIS is a pleasant addition to the label Tri Angle. His amorphous and ambiguous sound palette with abstract drum is drenched with heavy bass structures.

On his debut The Quicksand Is Going Now he buries beats in a dense and grainy mass.

The Brussels-based sound designer Sagat is a member of the Bepotel collective. His latest record Melting The Earth Onto The Body Without Organs proves that electronic music can sound very warm and tactile. Exciting groovy rhytms dive into darkish dub. Sharp funk is brought in techno frequencies. Reverb and delay sound creamy like butter. A new but at the same time familiar sound.

FilosofischeStilte is de nietsvermoedende projectnaam van de Haagse beatmaker Luuk Graham.

Een jonge jongen met Nederlands-Surinaamse roots die niet zoveel zegt en alles in vraagt stelt … wat alvast tot een boeiende muzikale output leidt.

Hij begon als rapper, maar evolueerde snel naar boetseerder van zijn eigen geluiden. Hij vindt vooral inspiratie bij Commodore 64- en Nintendogeluiden, om er dan met sprankelende synths, vette bassen en digitale noise een eigen handelsmerk uit te kneden.

Kassett of Gavin Vanaelst maakt elektronica op basis van eigen opnames verwerkt met Ableton en is labeleigenaar van DRLR Records dat zich richt op beat tapes en free downloads. Hij won in 2014 alvast de Red Bull Elektropedia award voor Most Promising Artist.

Ziggy (voor de vrienden) of DJ Nosedrip kon ook zeker niet ontbreken op Artefact Music Festival.

Deze eigenzinnige radiohost en vrolijke muzikale omnivoor kiest plaatjes op het gevoel, weigert trends te volgen en in genres te denken. Aan zijn succes te zien en zijn dolle djsets te horen is deze formule dik oké!

FilosofischeStilte is the strange project name of The Hague beatmaker Luuk Graham. A young boy with Dutch and Surinamian roots who doesn’t talk a lot and questions everything… which leads to an interesting musical output. He started as a rapper, but quickly evolved into sculptor of his own sound.

He is inspired by old skool computer sounds that he blends with sparkling synths, thick basses and digital noise to model his proper brand.

Kassett or Gavin Vanaelst designs electronic music based on his own recordings with Ableton and owns the label DRLR Records, focusing on beat tapes and free downloads. In 2014 he received the Red Bull Elektropedia award for Most Promising Artist.

No Artefact Music Festival without Ziggy Devriendt aka DJ Nosedrip. As an idiosyncratic radiohost and a jolly musical omnivore he spins records intuitively and refuses to follow trends or think in genres. This formula works out well!

VR 19 FEB SAMUEL KERRIDGE PRESENTS FATAL LIGHT ATTRACTION [belgian premiere] + SHAPEDNOISE + KISS THE ANUS OF A BLACK CAT 20u00, STUK LABOZAAL De Britse producer Samuel Kerridge brengt in januari zijn derde album uit: Fatal Light Attraction (Contort), een performance gemaakt voor het Berlijnse festival Atonal. Hij werkte samen met kunstenaars Andrej Boleslavský en Mária Júdová een systeem uit waarbij de muziek live gecreëerd wordt door het gebruik van licht en een codingsysteem. Een indrukwekkend schaduwspel wordt begeleid door een een kille soundtrack van industriële technobeats - voor het eerst in België te zien.

Als de soundtrack van Alien nog geschreven had moeten worden, dan kwam Nino Pedone alias Shapednoise zeker in aanmerking. Voor zijn album Different Selves (Type) kreeg hij hulp van Justin Broadrick (Jesu, Godflesh) die genadeloos een tandje bijstak voor deze brutale, allesverscheurende en dystope mashup van noise meets grindcore meets techno meets drum ‘n bass.

Een andere provocateur is Stef Irritant, de man achter Kiss The Anus of a Black Cat, die met To Live Vicarously (Zeal) al zijn zesde album op de wereld zet. De drone en folk van weleer hebben plaats en de 80s-invloeden maken hun entree.

Gothic synths en repetitieve drums met daarop Stef Heerens galmende stem die je warm en koud tegelijk doet voelen. Een driehoeksverhouding tussen darkwave, post-punk en industrial gebracht door een van Belgiës interessantste bands.

Z0 21 FEB WILLIAM BASINSKI + AMATORSKI + RAFAEL ANTON IRISARRI + ANSATZ DER MASCHINE + CHRISTINA VANTZOU + JOHN BENCE 15u00, STUK LABOZAAL + STUK SOETEZAAL Avant-gardist en leverancier van wonderschone muziek William Basinksi (VS) werd bekend met het meesterwerk Disintegration Loops. Zijn recentste werk Cascade/The Deluge (Temporary Residence) neemt de luisteraar mee in eeuwigdurende loop. Geen donkere, melancholische ambient, maar een Hitchcockiaanse spanning.

Avant-gardist, ambient pioneer and supplier of tremendously beautiful music, William Basinksi (USA), best known for Disintegration Loops. His latest work Cascade/The Deluge (Temporary Residence) brings the listener in an neverending loop.

Basinski’s ambient music is not specifically dark or melancholic, but builds up a Hichtcockian tension.

Ansatz der Maschine (BE) is the musical child of violinist and beatmaker Mathijs Bertel. It’s been 4 years since their album Heat, now they return with Tattooed Body Blues. Mathijs chose an artisanal approach: a 6-piece band with vocals by Little Dots-singer Sophie Ammann will immerse you in a poetic and fairytale-like atmosphere.

De Grieks-Amerikaanse-Brusselse filmmaakster Christina Vantzou wijdt zich nu aan haar muziek, waarbij ze een neo-klassieke sfeer schept in een beeldende droomwereld. Haar derde album N°3 (Kranky) is geen hapklare maaltijd, maar een onaardse en mysterieuze tocht.

A Fragile Geography (Room 40) is de titel van het laatste album van dronemeister Rafael Anton Irisarri (VS). De ‘making of’ duurde 2 jaar, de periode waarin Irisarri Seattle voor New York inruilde, en de plaat reflecteert op de hedendaagse samenleving met politieke, culturele en maatschappelijke oneffenheden. Een gestage opbouw vol melancholische, maar sublieme texturen die kwetsbaarheid ademen. Maximaal minimalisme.

John Bence (GB) is een jonge klassiek opgeleide muzikant met een onbegrensde fantasie die zijn weg baant binnen de elektronische muziek. Amper een kort stukje van zijn harmonieuze en tegelijk noisy ambient was genoeg om Nicolas Jaar te overtuigen en hem een plek te geven op zijn label Other People.

Greek-American Brussels-based filmmaker, visual artist and composer Christina Vantzou dedicated her career to music. She puts down her neo-classical realms in a filmic dreamworld. Her third album N°3 (Kranky) is not easily digestable, but an unearthy and mystical journey guided.

Bristolian John Bence is a classically trained musician with a limitless fantasy that makes his way whitin electronic music. A fragment of his harmonious and yet noisy ambient was enough to convince Nicolas Jaar to give him a spot on his label Other People.

Van 17 tot 21 februari organiseert STUK, als onderdeel van Artefact Music festival, MusicMakers Hacklab rond het festivalthema Up in The Air. MusicMakers Hacklab is een open labo gehost door Darsha Hewitt (CA-Bauhaus University) en Peter Kirn (VS-Createdigitalmusic) uit Berlijn. Ze nodigen 15 lokale en internationale deelnemers uit om samen te werken rond geluid in de ruimte: muzikanten, geluidskunstenaars, uitvinders, designers,… . MusicMakers Hacklab wil een brug slaan tussen deelnemers met verschillende artistieke en technische achtergronden. Op de laatste dag van het festival is er de MusicMakers Hacklab-finale met een publiek toonmoment in

STUKcafé.

As a part of Artefact music festival, from 17 to 21 February STUK organises an open collaborative lab around the theme ‘Up in the Air’. The project is hosted by Berlin-based Darsha Hewitt (CA-Bauhaus University) and Peter Kirn (US-Createdigitalmusic). They invite 15 local and international participants to collaborate around the idea of sound in the airspace: musicians, sound artists, designers and inventors,… MusicMakers Hacklab wants to connect people with diverse artistic and technical backgrounds. Drones worden door het leger gebruikt in conflictsituaties en de overheid zet ze in om ons in de gaten te houden. Makelaars en de filmindustrie gebruiken cameradrones om mooie plaatjes te schieten en boeren gebruiken ze om ziektes op te sporen in hun gewassen. Ontwikkelingen in dronetechnologie volgen elkaar in sneltempo op en de toepassingsmogelijkheden lijken eindeloos. Bart Remes (groepsleider Micro Air Vehicle Lab TU Delft) geeft enkele voorbeelden en een demonstratie. Jon Verbeke (Arial Robotics KU Leuven) heeft het over de inzetbaarheid van drones in de landbouw. Dronejournalist Stijn Postema treedt met beide wetenschappers in gesprek.

The military uses drones in conflict situations, the government to watch us. Brokers and film industry look into their potential to shoot nice images, and farmers deploy them to scout for crop diseases. Drone technologies rapidly evolve and the applications seem endless. Bart Remes (director Micro Air Vehicle Lab TU Delft) focuses on some examples and gives a demonstration. Jon Verbeke speaks about the use of drones for agricultural purposes. Drone journalist Stijn Postema will discuss with them.

Marije Baalman (NL) °1978, Pingjum Marije Baalman is een Nederlandse kunstenares, die woont en werkt in Amsterdam. In haar artistieke praktijk beweegt Baalman zich tussen live performance, live coding en interactieve installaties met licht en geluid. Het componeren van gedrag en interactiemodaliteiten, en het creëren van sensordata gestuurde processen eerder dan vaste sound tracks, staan centraal in haar praktijk. In de ontwikkeling van haar werk gebruikt ze opensourcetechnologie (software en hardware) en is ze een actieve participant in de opensourcegemeenschap.

Marije Baalman heeft een diverse achtergrond in fysica, akoestiek, elektronische muziek, geluidskunst en performance.

Marije Baalman is a Dutch artist, living and working in Amsterdam.

In her artistic work Baalman moves between live performance, livecoding, and interactive installations involving light and sound. Her focus is on composing behaviours and interaction modalities, creating processes driven by sensor data, rather than fixed sound tracks. To realise her works she uses open source technology (software and hardware) and she is an active contributor to the open source community. Marije Baalman has a diverse background in physics, acoustics, electronic music and sound art, and performance.

Bilal Bahir (IQ/BE) °1988, Baghdad Bilal Bahir woont en werkt nabij 100

Namen. In zijn œuvre gebruikt Bahir een waaier aan verschillende technieken en media waaronder installatiekunst, video’s, collages, tekeningen, sculpturen en objecten. Hij laat zich inspireren door de cultuur uit zijn geboorteland en door de conflicten die het verwoest hebben. Bilal Bahir werkt vaak in series die zowel verwijzen naar zijn kindertijd en traditionele en religieuze vertelsels als naar ballingschap en familiale ontheemding. Bilal Bahir studeerde beeldhouwkunst aan het Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Bagdad (2008) en aan de Academie voor Schone kunsten in Namen (2010).

Hij wordt vertegenwoordigd door Gery Art Gallery.

Visual artist Bilal Bahir lives and works near Namur. In his practice Bahir uses a wide range of media and techniques involving installations, videos, collages, drawings, sculptures, and objects. He draws inspiration from the culture of his native country and from the conflicts which have ravaged it.

His often serial works usually refer to memories of childhood, traditional and religious tales, as well as exile and unrootedness. Bilal Bahir is a graduate in sculpture of the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad (2008) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Namur (2010). He is represented by Gery Art Gallery.

Amy Balkin (US) °1967, Baltimore Amy Balkin is een Amerikaanse kunstenares die woont en werkt in San Francisco. In haar praktijk vermengt ze conceptuele kunst, performatieve interventies, online media, historisch onderzoek en

politiek activisme. Haar projecten stellen een nieuwe ‘commons’ voor, rekening houdend met juridische grenzen en systemen, ecologische rechtvaardigheid en het delen van middelen uit het publieke domein, in de context van klimaatverandering. Balkin studeerde schilderkunst, video en beeldhouwkunst aan de School of the Art Institute of Chicago alvorens haar master te behalen in Stanford University.

Amy Balkin is a San Francisco-based artist who mixes conceptual art, performative interventions, online media, historical research, and political activism. Her projects propose a reconstituted commons, considering legal borders and systems, environmental justice, and the sharing of common-pool resources in the context of climate change. Balkin studied painting, video, and sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is a graduate from Stanford University.

Bigert & Bergström (SE) °1965, Stockholm & °1962, Stockholm Mats Bigert en Lars Bergström vormen het Zweedse kunstenaarsduo Bigert & Bergström, en wonen en werken in Stockholm, Zweden. Hun praktijk varieert van grootschalige, al dan niet publieke, installaties tot sculpturen en film projecten. In hun werk leggen ze de nadruk op het samenkomen van mens, natuur en techniek en onderzoeken ze wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke onderwerpen die besproken worden in de hedendaagse samenleving. Ze worden vertegenwoordigd door Gal-

lery Niklas Belenius, Stockholm, Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin en Cis Art Lodgers, Barcelona.

Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström are an artist duo living and working in Stockholm, Sweden.

Throughout their career, Bigert & Bergström have produced and created large-scale installations and public works, sculptures and film projects. Often with a conceptual edge, the core of their work is placed at the junction between humanity, nature and technology, and investigates scientific and social topics discussed in contemporary society. They are represented by Gallery Niklas Belenius, Stockholm, Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin and Cis Art Lodgers, Barcelona.

James Bridle (UK) °1979, London James Bridle is een Britse kunstenaar, schrijver en theoreticus die woont en werkt in Londen. Zijn artistieke praktijk positioneert zich op de intersectie tussen kunst, wetenschap en politiek activisme, met onderzoeksinteresses die gaan van moderne netwerkinfrastructuur tot overheidstransparantie en technologische surveillance.

Bridle studeerde aan University College Londen en behaalde een master in computer- en cognitieve wetenschappen met een focus op linguistiek en artificiële intelligentie. Hij wordt vertegenwoordigd door NOME Gallery, Berlin.

James Bridle is a British artist, writer and theorist, based in London.

With a long-standing investigative interest in modern network infra-

structure, government transparency, and technological surveillance, his artistic practice positions itself at the intersection of art, science and political activism. Bridle graduated from University College London with a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Cognitive Science, specialising in Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence.

He is represented by NOME Gallery, Berlin.

The Center for Genomic Gastronomy (US/NO/IE) & Nicola Twilley (US/UK) The Center for Genomic Gastronomy is een denktank, geleid door kunstenaars en opgericht in 2010 door Zack Denfeld en Catherine Kramer. Ze onderzoeken biotechnologieën, en de biodiversiteit van menselijke voedselsystemen. In hun praktijk brengen ze controverses rond voedsel in kaart, prototypen ze alternatieve culinaire toekomsten en verbeelden ze een eerlijker, meer biodivers en mooier voedselsysteem. Kunstenaar en ontwerper Emma Conley is het derde kernlid en producent van CGG. Nicola Twilley is een schrijfster, kunstenaar en curator, gebaseerd in New York. Ze gebruikt voedsel als primaire lens om de verhouding tussen mens en de geconstrueerde culturele en natuurlijke omgeving te exploreren en te herdenken. The Center for Genomic Gastronomy is an artist-led think tank, founded in 2010 by Zack Denfeld and Catherine Kramer. They examine biotechnologies and biodiversity of human food systems.

In their practice, they map food controversies, prototype alternative culinary futures and imagine a more just, biodiverse and beautiful food system. Artist and designer Emma Conley is the Center for Genomic Gastronomy’s third core member and producer.

Nicola Twilley is a writer, artist, and curator, based in New York.

She uses food as her primary lens through which to explore and reimagine human relationships with the built, cultural and natural environment. Paolo Di Trapani (IT) °1962, Sondrio Paolo Di Trapani is een fysicus, een professor in optica aan de Insubria Universiteit in Como, Italië en het Hoofd en de CEO van CoeLux srl. Paolo Di Trapani is a physicist, a Professor of Optics at Insubria University in Como, Italy and the President/CEO of CoeLux srl. In addition to academic activities, in 2001 Di Trapani created Di Luce In Luce, a wide-audience-oriented

theatrical performance, which proposed an indoor, physical reconstruction of spectacular optical atmospheric phenomena.

As a follow-up, Di Trapani developed CoeLux®, a technology that artificially reproduces the sky and sun, virtually undistinguishable from reality. CoeLux® won, among the others, the LuxAward 2014 as ‘the light source innovation of the year’ and the WEF ‘Technology Pioneers 2015’.

Forensic Architecture (UK) Forensic Architecture is een onderzoeksproject gebaseerd in Goldsmiths, University of London.

Het project verzamelde sinds 2011 een team van architecten, kunstenaars, filmmakers, activisten en theoretici om onderzoek te doen dat ruimtelijke analyses in juridische en politieke fora verzamelt en presenteert. Hun onderzoek levert bewijsmateriaal aan voor internationale vervolgteams, politieke organisaties, NGO’s en de Verenigde Naties. Daarnaast doet het team kritisch onderzoek naar de geschiedenis en huidige staat van forensische praktijken in het articuleren van noties van publieke waarheid.

Forensic Architecture is a research project based at Goldsmiths, University of London. The project, founded in 2011, has assembled a team of architects, artists, filmmakers, activists, and theorists to undertake research that gathers and presents spatial analysis in legal and political forums. Their investigations provide evidence for international prosecution teams, political organisations, NGOs, and the United Nations. Additionally,

the project undertakes critical examinations of the history and present status of forensic practices in articulating notions of public truth.

Alicia Framis (ES) °1967, Barcelona Alicia Framis is een Spaanse kunstenares die woont en werkt in Amsterdam en Barcelona. Ze vermengt geregeld architectuur, design en mode in haar performances en kunstwerken, die de details van het dagelijkse leven in een stedelijke setting onderzoeken. Alicia Framis is a Spanish artist, living and working in Amsterdam and Barcelona. As a multidisciplinary artist, she readily mixes architecture, design and fashion in her performances and projects which explore the details of contemporary life in an urban setting.

She emphasises social dilemmas in her work to provoke her audience to interact. Alicia Framis studied at the Barcelona University and the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris.

She also completed her masters at the Institut d’Hautes Etudes, Paris and at the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam.

Frederic Geurts (BE) °1965, Wilrijk Frederic Geurts woont en werkt in Antwerpen. Sinds 1988 bouwt hij aan een oeuvre waarin de dialoog met de context centraal staat.

Steeds vaker vertaalt dit zich in realisaties voor de publieke ruimte.

Frederic Geurts is vooral gekend omwille van zijn monumentale maar fragiele structuren die inspelen op de omgeving waar ze getoond worden. Geurts studeerde productontwikkeling in Genk.

Tussen 2005 en 2013 was hij verbonden als praktijkdocent aan de MADfaculty in Hasselt waar hij het onderzoeksdomein kunst en publieke ruimte, een crossover tussen architectuur en kunst, mee heeft uitgebouwd. Hij wordt vertegenwoordigd door Sofie Van De Velde Gallery.

Frederic Geurts lives and works in Antwerp. He has been building his oeuvre since 1988, the core of which lies in the works’ dialogue with its context. He is mostly known for his monumental yet fragile structures which play into the surrounding environments.

Frederic Geurts studied product development in Genk. Between 2005 and 2013 he was a lecturer at the MADfaculty in Hasselt, where he co-developed the research field of art and public space, a crossover between architecture and art.

Georgina Voss is a technology anthropologist. Her work explores the interplay of technology practices, the political and infrastructural systems underpinning them, and spatial elements of these relationships. Voss is a co-founder of the research co-operative Strange Telemetry and teaches design and politics at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Ief Spincemaille (BE) °1976, Leuven Ief Spincemaille is een Belgisch beeldend kunstenaar die woont en werkt in Leuven. Daarnaast is hij ook sinds 2006 actief als onafhankelijk set designer. Ief Spincemaille is a Belgian visual artist, living and working in Leuven. His practice varies from photography and video to installations, using a diverse range of materials depending on the concept at hand.

Superflux (UK/IN) Superflux is het Anglo-Indisch ontwerperscollectief rond Anab Jain en Jon Ardern, dat opereert vanuit Londen. James Turrell is an American visual artist, living and working from Arizona, USA. He is mostly known for his sculptures and installations exploring the relationship between light and space. Liam Young is an Australian designer, futurist, critic and curator currently living and working in London. His practice is two-fold.

With the nomadic studio The Unknown Fields Division, he travels on annual expeditions to the ends of the earth to investigate unreal and forgotten landscapes, alien terrains and industrial ecologies. The think tank Tomorrows Thoughts Today explores the consequences of fantastic, speculative and imaginary urbanisms.
