STUK, EEN HUIS VOOR GELUID Als Huis voor Geluid wil STUK vanaf dit seizoen de aanzet geven tot een nieuw en ambitieus verhaal: een geluidswerking met twee stromingen die op een natuurlijke wijze door elkaar vloeien.

Wat goed is houden we: STUK draait al jaren mee als concertplek voor (experimentele) popmuziek en biedt een podium aan startende kunstenaars en gevestigde namen. Een plek waar de avontuurlijke concertganger nieuwe trends kan ontdekken en de eerste concerten op Belgische bodem kan meepikken van artiesten die later grote podia zullen sieren zoals Nils Frahm, Jon Hopkins, Future Islands, …

Met de tweede invalshoek die past in de hervorming van STUK naar Huis voor Dans, Beeld en Geluid, maken we het nog spannender. We gaan op zoek naar de fluïde grenzen tussen geluid en muziek. De Franse schrijver Victor Hugo zei: ‘La musique

c’est du bruit qui pense’.

Exact… wat maakt van geluid eigenlijk muziek?

Geluid is letterlijk ‘wat men hoort’ en is gebonden aan een context en een ervaring. Muziek kan men omschrijven als geluid dat ‘georganiseerd’ wordt en waarnaar men in een concertsetting gaat luisteren. Die concertsetting hoeft niet per se staand of zittend. Het luisteren naar muziek kan bijvoorbeeld ook liggend, zoals tijdens de Slaapwel Records/Dauwmorning-labelnights. Of tijdens een yogasessie/geluidsmeditatie onder begeleiding van ambientpionier Laraaji. Door in te grijpen op de setting verandert de manier waarop men als luisteraar een concert gaat beleven. Geluid wordt meer dan luisteren, het wordt een zintuiglijke ervaring… je kan geluid ook voelen en zelfs proeven.

Niet enkel STUK zelf richt zich op het onderzoek naar de grenzen tussen muziek en geluid,

maar ook de artiesten die aan bod komen in die tweede stroming. Een aantal van hen draaien mee in het ‘popcircuit’, maar kijken vanuit een onderzoekende en verdiepende manier naar muziek.

Net als hun collega-muzikanten die vertrekken van geluidskunst en nieuwe muziek vinden zij hun inspiratie bij avant-gardecomponisten en pioniers van de elektroakoestische muziek, maar ook in hedendaags wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar geluid.

Via lezingen en Q&A’s willen we je als muziekliefhebber laten kennis maken met geluid als fenomeen. Tijdens Artefact is er bijvoorbeeld het MusicMakers Hacklab met geluidskunstenaars Peter Kirn en Darsha Hewitt die muziek en technologie verbinden via instrumentenbouw.

Naast het raakvlak tussen experimentele popmuziek en geluidskunst zijn er de boeiende speelvlakken tussen geluid en dans en geluid en beeld. Dankzij de uitbreiding van het luik geluid spelen we in op de natuurlijke

manier waarop de disciplines zich ten opzichte van elkaar verhouden en onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn. STUK als Huis voor Geluid wordt ‘the place to be’ voor de muzikale avonturier!

STUK, A HOUSE FOR SOUND As a House for Sound, STUK wants to start telling a new and ambitious new story: a sound programme with two currents that naturally flow through one another.

We won’t change what was good already: STUK has been an interesting concert venue for years, offering a stage to young artists and household names in (experimental) pop music. A place where the adventurous concert goer can discover new trends and watch the first Belgian concerts of artists who will become major acts, like Nils Frahm, Jon Hopkins, Future Islands, … Lucky you!

The second approach within the reform to a House for Dance, Image and Sound makes it even more exciting. We will examine the fluid borders between sound and music. French writer Victor Hugo once said: ‘La musique c’est du bruit qui pense’. Exactly … what in fact turns sound into music?

Sound is ‘what we hear’, bound to a context and an experience.

Music can be described as sound that is ‘organized’, listened to in a concert setting. That does not have to be standing or seated.

You can listen to music while lying down, like during the Slaapwel Records/Dauwmorning labelnights, or during the yoga session/sound meditation with ambient pioneer Laraaji. By changing the setting, you change the way listeners experience a concert. Sound becomes more than listening, it turns into a sensorial experience. You can also feel sound, or even taste it.

Not only STUK focuses on the research of the borders between music and sound, the artists working within that second approach do so too. A number of them are part of the ‘pop scene’, but also look at music from an exploring and in-depth angle. Just like their music colleagues who start from sound art and new music, they find inspiration in avant-garde composers and pioneers of electro-acoustic music, as well as in contemporary scientific sound research. Through lectures and

Q&As they want to introduce sound as a phenomenon to you, the music lover. For instance, Artefact presents the MusicMakers Hacklab, where sound artists Peter Kirn and Darsha Hewitt link music and technology through instrument building.

Next to the intersection of experimental pop music and sound art, there are interesting areas between sound and dance and between sound and image.

With the extension of the sound programme, we anticipate the way these disciplines are related and inseparably connected. STUK as a House for Sound will become the place to be for the musical adventurer!

De New Yorkse ambientpionier en meester in meditatie LARAAJI presenteert zijn nieuwe project The Peace Garden, een workshop/concert dat yoga-oefeningen combineert met luisteren.

LARAAJI creëert een bedwelmende trip met lach- en ademhalingsoefeningen en zachte stretching naar een uitgesponnen en overweldigende geluidsmeditatie (Savasana). Geen paniek, je hoeft zeker geen yogameester te zijn om deel te nemen.

Drie jaar na A Gentleman’s Agreement keert Dez Mona terug naar de roots, met de stem van Gregory Frateur en contrabas van Nicolas Rombouts als basis.

Het resultaat heet ORIGIN en wordt in STUK live voorgesteld samen met het vaste Dez Monakwartet: accordeonist Roel Van Camp (DAAU), drummer Steven Cassiers (Dans Dans), multi-instrumentalist Tijs Delbeke (Sir Yes Sir) en gitarist Sjoerd Bruil (Black Cassette).

Three years after A Gentleman’s Agreement, Dez Mona go back to the roots: Gregory Frateur’s voice and Nicolas Rombouts’ double bass form the base of their new album ORIGIN. The rest of the musical picture is painted by the regular Dez Mona quartet: accordionist Roel Van Camp (DAAU),

Het Berlijnse label Miasmah staat voor ‘Music for scenes and places’: jonge artiesten en gevestigde waarden die elk op hun manier muziek maken met een zeer filmisch karakter. Present in STUK: sounddesigner en Slowdivedrummer Simon Scott, Abattoir Fermé-componist Kreng met klarinettist Gareth Davis, James Welburn en labelbaas Erik K. Skodvin aka Svarte Greiner.

De Schot Alasdair Roberts is een ervaren rot in het vak: naast heel wat samenwerkingen bracht hij ook werk uit als Appendix Out en later onder eigen naam. Roberts vermengt eigen songs met interpretaties van Schotse traditionals, en creëert tijdloze songs rond de combinatie van zijn unieke stem en zachte fingerpicking. Lyenn keert solo terug naar STUK met nieuw materiaal - een nieuw album volgt begin 2016.

Is een open soundlab dat tijdens het jaarlijkse Artefactfestival (februari 2016) een week lang zal neerdalen in STUK. Gastheer en gastvrouw van dit labo zijn Peter Kirn van CDM (createdigitalmusic.com) en geluidskunstenares Darsha Hewitt (darsha.org). Zij nodigen muzikanten, geluidskunstenaars, liefhebbers … uit om samen te werken en nieuwe technieken uit te testen rond het thema van Artefact. Koken met technologie en geluid! Een open call volgt in september!

Is a week-long open collaborative laboratory hosted by Peter Kirn of CDM (createdigitalmusic.com) and sound artist Darsha Hewitt (darsha.org) that will take place during Artefact festival (February 2016). Samen met 30 CC, Erfgoedcel Stad Leuven en KU Leuven Dienst Cultuur presenteert STUK Elsewhere: een nieuwe reeks concerten op buitengewone locaties in de stad, met artiesten wier werk zich situeert op de grens tussen muziek en geluidskunst.

De aftrap van de reeks doen we in het Stadhuis met Schotse sounddesigner John Lemke en het neoklassiek droneproject Innerwoud van Gentenaar Pieter-Jan Van Assche. Voor de concerten is er eerst een rondleiding.

30 CC, Erfgoedcel Stad Leuven, KU Leuven Culture Office and STUK present Elsewhere: a new series of concerts on extraordinary locations in the city, with artists whose music is situated on the edge of music and sound art.

The kick-off of the series will be held in the city hall with Scottish sound designer John Lemke and Innerwoud, the neoclassical drone project of Pieter-Jan Van Assche.

The concert night starts with a tour of the building.

In de fricties tussen dans, beeld en geluid ontstaan vaak interessante projecten. Alvast twee aanraders uit het programma dans en beeld.

AERNOUDT JACOBS HELIOFOON

23 SEP — 14 OKT STUK VERBEECKZAAL + TUSSENPLATFORM — GRATIS Geluidskunstenaar Aernoudt Jacobs presenteert Heliofoon.

Een installatie ontworpen om naar het geluid van de zon te luisteren. Het principe is simpel: energie van de zon wordt omgezet in geluid, zonder elektronische versterking. Met Heliofoon creëert Jacobs een muziekstuk voor de zon waarbij de tonaliteit van de installatie steeds verandert met de sterkte van het licht.

De term ‘omgevingsgeluid’ krijgt op die manier een heel andere dimensie.

With Heliophone, sound artist Aernoudt Jacobs presents an installation that turns sunlight into sound. The basic principle of Heliophone is simple: energy from the sun is transformed into sound without electronic amplification. With Heliophone, Jacobs created a sound piece for the sun; the tonality of the installation constantly changes depending on the intensity of light. In this way, the notion of ‘environmental sounds’ gains an entirely different connotation.

Niets is wat het lijkt. GRIND is zowel minimaal als overweldigend en laat je helemaal gedesoriënteerd achter. Een totaalbeleving. Geluid door David Kiers en Emptyset.

Imagine a place where your senses are outwitted. Where rhythms distort your perceptions, and where the weight of sound reduces your body to vibrations. GRIND takes you on a journey in which your body synthesizes with light and sound.

Nothing is as it seems. GRIND is both minimal and overwhelming, and leaves you completely disoriented. Sound by David Kiers and Emptyset.

STUK, EEN HUIS VOOR DANS In september opent STUK als Huis voor Dans, Beeld en Geluid.

Als danshuis trekt STUK alle registers open: vanaf nu is STUK dĂŠ danshub in Leuven waar hedendaagse dans in al zijn facetten een plek krijgt. STUK gaat hiervoor in zee met een aantal Leuvense partners die elk hun expertise binnenbrengen: 30CC (Dubbeldans en Rode Hond), fABULEUS (Werking Jong Publiek), Mooss (danseducatie), WISPER (danscursussen) en de KU Leuven (danstheorie).

Hedendaagse dans kent vele gezichten. De diversiteit die zo eigen is aan hedendaagse dans willen we met jou delen aan de hand van een reeks zorgvuldig geselecteerde voorstellingen. In Dubbeldans worden producties voor de grote zaal (30CC) aan meer intieme, kleinschaliger voorstellingen (STUK) gekoppeld. Met Encore! duiken we in het recente verleden en hernemen we spraakmakende, internationale dansvoorstellingen. Stuk voor stuk parels die hun waarde hebben bewezen en nog steeds actueel zijn. Voorstellingen die je absoluut niet mag missen.

Met de Werking Jong Publiek openen we de deuren voor kinderen en jongeren.

De integrale danswerking van fABULEUS komt naar STUK. Voor het familiefestival Rode Hond stelde STUK het dansluik samen. Ook de scholenwerking wordt grondig aangepakt: naast de reguliere avondvoorstellingen biedt STUK schoolvoorstellingen aan tijdens de schooluren via schoolmetcultuur.be.

Samen met vzw Straatrijk werken we aan een traject rond urban dance en hedendaagse dans. Dit najaar strijkt Straatrijk neer in het STUKcafĂŠ met een tweede DansBAaR: een battle-avond waarbij verschillende dansstijlen met elkaar in de clinch gaan.

Tot slot is er het vertrouwde festival Playground dat al negen edities lang het spannende grensgebied tussen de podiumkunsten en beeldende kunsten verkent. De recente belangstelling van de beeldende kunstwereld voor dans en vice versa vindt zijn weerklank in het programma.

STUK wil een ontmoetingsplek zijn voor hedendaagse dans. Een huis met vele kamers, waar iedereen een ingang vindt.

Naast het overzicht van de voorstellingen vind je in deze brochure ook info over alle initiatieven die je aan het dansen of het denken zullen zetten: inleidingen en nagesprekken, workshops en cursussen en een gloednieuwe collegereeks danstheorie.

We kijken ernaar uit om je te verwelkomen.

STUK, A HOUSE FOR DANCE In September STUK will reopen as a House for Dance, Image and Sound.

As a dance house STUK pulls out all the stops: as of today, STUK is the dance hub of Leuven where contemporary dance in all its forms takes to the stage. To achieve this STUK is collaborating with several Leuven-based partners, each bringing their specific expertise: 30CC (Dubbeldans and Rode Hond), fABULEUS (Young Audience Programme), Mooss (dance education), WISPER (dance courses) and the KU Leuven (dance theory).

Contemporary dance has many sides to it.

We aim to share its unique diversity with you through a series of carefully selected performances. In Dubbeldans productions designed for the main stage (30CC) are matched with performances of a more intimate, smaller scale (STUK). We delve into recent history with Encore! and recapture widely-discussed international dance performances, each gems in their own right, which have already proven their value and are still relevant today. Performances truly not to be missed.

We open our doors to children and teenagers with our Young Audience Programme. The complete dance programme of fABULEUS is coming to STUK. STUK has also put together the dance programme for the family festival Rode Hond. We are also developing our programmes for schools: alongside the regular evening performances, STUK is programming exclusive performances for schools in collaboration with schoolmetcultuur.be.

Together with vzw Straatrijk we work on a trajectory in urban and contemporary dance. This fall, Straatrijk returns to STUKcafĂŠ for the second DansBAaR: a battle night where different dance styles go head-tohead.

Last but not least, we continue with the staunch festival Playground that, for nine editions already, explores the thrilling overlap between the performing arts and visual arts. Recent interest from the visual arts into dance and vice versa is reflected in this programme.

STUK aims to offer a meeting place for contemporary dance. A house of many rooms, where everyone can find a point of entry. Alongside an overview of the dance performances, in this brochure you can also find information about all sorts of other events that will either get you up on your feet dancing or set your mind at work: introductions and discussions, workshops and courses, and a brand new series of lectures on dance theory.

We look forward to welcoming you. After all, our new plans will only become reality when you are in our venue, and the delicate exchange between artist and audience comes to life.

Zombie Aporia investigates the intricate connection between dance and music. It seeks to discover possibility within apparently impossible contradictions: music that is the result of dancing, emotional expression that begins physically, spontaneous feelings that are designed, words that give more of a sense of vibration than meaning.

The smile can unexpectedly transform, and it often masks feelings of sadness, discomfort, fear or shock. Inspired by the figure of Antigone, Etienne Guilloteau creates a solo about resistance.

Antigone is the epitome of the tragic battle; she listens to her conscience rather than obeying the law. FEU is a dance performance in which a dancer offers resilience to the live music of Zwerm: an electric guitar quartet that connects the rigour of classic compositions with an experimental pop and rock attitude.

Christian Rizzo draws from the rich tradition of Mediterranean dance. The result is a choreography for eight male dancers who weave ancient gestures with a leitmotif from Rizzo’s oeuvre, the falling body. The cadence is determined by two live drummers playing a cross between tribal rhythms and a psychedelic rock concert. D’Après une histoire vraie was enthusiastically received in Avignon, 2013.

Vanrunxt heeft de bijzondere gave om de meest ‘schitterende’ bewegingen van een danser te isoleren en die vervolgens uit te vergroten. De Turkse dansers creëren op de scène een ‘sprankelende’, Turkse A T M O S P H E R E. Four Turkish dancers evoke an image of their social environment on stage. The title refers to the atmosphere both as (nearby) surroundings and (distant) outer space.

Pieter Ampe houdt van conflict en van duetten. Toen hij een voorstelling mocht maken met Alain Platel als coach, koos hij voor zijn broer als tegenspeler. De spanning is vooral onderhuids aanwezig. De broers bestuderen elkaar nauwgezet, als in een spiegel. Ze dansen, zingen, lopen, strijden, maar kunnen toch niet zonder elkaar. Door het perfect gevoel voor ritme ontaarden de eenvoudige handelingen in hilarische momenten. Een voorstelling over broers en bij uitbreiding elke mogelijke relatie.

The brothers Pieter and Jakob Ampe study each other very closely, as if in a mirror. The dancer discovers his voice, the singer learns about his body. The brothers dance, sing, walk and fight, but not without each other.

Verklärte Nacht is gebaseerd op Schönbergs laatromantische compositie van het gelijknamige gedicht van Richard Dehmel. Tijdens een door de maan verlichte nachtwandeling bekent een vrouw aan haar geliefde dat ze zwanger is van een andere man. Nu eens zwaar beladen met passie, dan weer kwetsbaar als een verlegen stem.

Als danser, als co-choreograaf en als assistent gooide de Portugese Helder Seabra hij de voorbije jaren hoge ogen in verschillende Vandekeybus- en Cherkaoui-voorstellingen. Hij timmert nu aan zijn eigen stijl, die in de lijn ligt van het danstheater van Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Een fascinerende mix van melancholie, poëzie en een uitbundig joie de vivre met live muziek van Maya’s Moving Castle. Ondanks de titel wat ons betreft absoluut een hoogvlieger.

Verklärte Nacht is based on Schönberg’s late-romantic composition of Richard Dehmel’s poem of the same name. During a moonlit walk a woman tells her beloved that she’s fallen pregnant by another man. At times heavily loaded with passion and then as fragile as a timid voice.

As a dancer, but also as a co-choreographer and assistant, the Portuguese Helder Seabra has had very successful collaborations in various performances by Vandekeybus and Cherkaoui. He is now developing his own style, which is in line with the dance theatre of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. A fascinating mix of melancholy, poetry and an exuberant joie de vivre, with live music from Maya’s Moving Castle. The birds are perhaps flying low, but for us this is a high-flyer!

As of now children, teenagers and families can also get acquainted with contemporary dance at STUK. We have joined forces with fABULEUS to establish the Young Audience Programme. STUK will co-produce all of fABULEUS’ dance productions, host their premieres as well as later re-enactments. In deze energieke en intieme choreografie verbeelden acht jongeren de observaties van een jong meisje over het spel van de liefde. De relatie van een koppel komt zwaar onder druk te staan wanneer ze een oudere jeugdvriend en een jong meisje in huis nemen. Wat begint als een spannend experiment, ontwikkelt zich al gauw tot een explosief mengsel van verwachtingen en jaloezie.

In this energetic and intimate choreography, eight young people depict a young girl’s observations about the game of love. A couple’s relationship is put under pressure when they take in a childhood friend and a young girl. What begins as an exciting experiment quickly develops into an explosive mixture of expectation and jealousy.

Slow Sports Kids, a fun and successful dance performance for children. The piece originates from the movements found in the world of sports. It also shows the game of action and reaction between athletes, reporters and spectators. Slow Sports Kids provides a new perception of both sport and dance. A performance for the sportsperson and supporter in all of us.

In Solo danst Maria Hassabi een intens duet met een Oosters tapijt. Ze plooit het tapijt, klimt, kruipt en tilt het op. Het tapijt wordt architectuur, gebedsmatje, een tweede huid, een intieme minnaar. De focus ligt op het fysieke, op precisie en beheersing van lichaam en object. Extra Shapes van DD Dorvillier is tegelijkertijd dans, een concert voor luidsprekers en een lichtshow.

Het podium is verdeeld in drie velden: geluid blijft aan de ene kant, licht in het midden, dans aan de andere kant. Een identieke loop van 17 minuten wordt drie keer herhaald, waarbij het publiek rond het werk draait en van perspectief wisselt. Sonja Jokiniemi onderzoekt in Hmm op speelse wijze de vorming van taal. Ze gebruikt hiervoor o.a. klanken en herhaling. In plaats van betekenis te geven, tast haar taal in het rond, maakt geluiden en vormt uiteindelijk een chaotisch muzikaal geheel. Maar dan licht er toch een verhaal op...

Playground is an open space for artists who are not bound to one particular discipline.

They combine elements of installation, text, film, sculpture, architecture or choreography. They bring the human body and objects together in live performances and create visual images that reflect upon art, the world and the mediatisation of life.

Playground presents a diverse range of artworks, performances and experiments from the fascinating overlap between the performing arts and visual arts. In recent years, within the visual arts world there has been increased interest in dance, and vice versa. This reciprocal interest is reflected in the programme.

In Solo, Maria Hassabi dances an intense duet with an Eastern carpet. She pleats the carpet, climbs and crawls across it, and lifts it up. The carpet becomes architecture, a weapon, a prayer mat, a second skin, an intimate lover. The performance revolves around the physical, on the precision and control of the body and the object. Extra Shapes by DD Dorvillier is simultaneously a dance performance, a concert of loudspeakers and a lightshow. The stage is divided into three equal parts: the sound stays on one side, light in the middle and dance on the other side. An identical loop of 17 minutes is repeated three time. Sonja Jokiniemi playfully explores the form of language in Hmm. Among other things, she uses sounds, repetition and the physical aspects of language. Rather than applying meaning, her language feels its way, produces sounds, and builds up into a chaotic musical unity.

But there’s also a story to be found.

Playground is een vrijplaats voor kunstenaars die zich niet aan één discipline binden. Ze combineren elementen uit installatie, tekst, film, sculptuur of choreografie.

In live performances brengen ze objecten en lichamen samen in visuele beelden die reflecteren over kunst, de wereld en de mediatisering van het leven. Voor de negende keer brengt Playground een diversiteit aan kunstwerken, voorstellingen en experiment in het boeiende veld tussen podium en beeldende kunst. De laatste jaren is de interesse van de beeldende kunst wereld voor dans en vice versa toegenomen. Dat vindt zijn weerklank in het programma.

Dansduo’s bestaande uit dansers met verschillende dansstijlen nemen het tegen elkaar op in een originele 2on2 battle. Breakdancers met hopen battle-ervaring worden gecombineerd met dansers en danseressen uit verschillende stijlen zoals ballet, modern, twerking, tapdans, newstyle hip hop, … De eerste editie leverde alvast vuurwerk op. Duo’s kunnen zich nog steeds inschrijven via de Facebookpagina van STUK. For the second time Straatrijk and STUKcafé present DansBAar: a unique dance & party concept! Dance duos with different dance styles compete with each other in exciting 2on2 battles. Breakdancers with lots of battle experience are combined with dancers who are specialized in ballet, modern, twerking, tap dance, hip hop ... The first edition was a huge success. Het Departement Culturele Studies van de KU Leuven en STUK richten samen het vak ‘Hedendaagse dans: theorie & analyse’ in. De studenten worden er ingewijd in de belangrijkste tendenzen van de hedendaagse dans. Na een grondige inleiding over de hedendaagse dans in de 20ste en de 21ste eeuw volgt een capita selecta met verschillende gastdocenten. Ook hier zal STUK actief verbindingen realiseren tussen de lessen en de voorstellingen. Een aantal colleges zijn toegankelijk voor het bredere publiek. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker en Meg Stuart zegden hiervoor al hun medewerking toe.

The Cultural Studies department of the KU Leuven and STUK join forces and offer the course ‘Contemporary Dance: theory & analysis’. Students are initiated in contemporary dance’s most important tendencies.

After a thorough introduction on contemporary dance in the 20th and 21st century, several guest lecturers will give capita selecta.

STUK will realise active links between the course and the dance performances. Some classes will be open for the broader public.

ONDERTUSSEN IN HET HUIS VOOR BEELD & GELUID IN THE MEANTIME IN THE HOUSE FOR IMAGE & SOUND Het is natuurlijk geen geheim dat de kunsten vandaag meer dan ooit hybride zijn. In de fricties tussen dans, beeld en geluid ontstaan vaak interessante projecten. Alvast twee aanraders uit het programma beeld en geluid.

JOACHIM KOESTER THE PLACE OF DEAD ROADS

23 > 25 SEP — STUK EXPOZAAL — GRATIS De video installatie The place of dead roads neemt je mee naar een donkere onderwereld; de ‘weg van de doden’.

De Deense kunstenaar Joachim Koester transformeert de typische bewegingen uit de ‘Western’ wereld tot een vreemd soort dans. Dansers Pieter Ampe (zie p. 9), Boglarka Börcsök, Liz Kinoshita en Halla Olafsdottir nemen poses aan, trekken en richten een pistool, vallen aan en verdedigen in een schijnbaar oncontroleerbare stroom van schokkende bewegingen en expressies.

This video installation by Danish artist Joachim Koester takes us on a journey to a subterranean world; a ‘road used by the dead’. Koester transforms the typical movements from the Western world into an odd kind of dance. Dancers Pieter Ampe, Boglarka Börcsök, Liz Kinoshita and Halla Olafsdottir take on different poses, draw and aim their gun, attack and defend in a seemingly uncontrollable stream of jerky movements and expressions.

STUK, EEN HUIS VOOR BEELD In september 2015 opent STUK zijn deuren als Huis voor Dans, Beeld en Geluid.

De BEELD en BEELDENDE KUNST programmatie wordt binnen dit nieuwe huis ingevuld vanuit een grote interesse in de maatschappelijke context waaruit ze ontstaat: kunst en leven staan met andere woorden centraal. Wat kan kunst vertellen over hoe we samenleven? Welke krachten sturen onze samenleving? En hoe verhouden kunstenaars zich hiertoe?

STUK kiest voor hedendaagse beeldende kunstenaars die zich toeleggen op complexe thema’s.

Gesterkt door alle kennis en inzichten die Leuven rijk is, met aandacht voor lokaal, nationaal en internationaal werk en vanuit een vertrouwen in onze bezoekers. Omdat het zinvol is en omdat het een tegengewicht kan vormen voor simplificatie en afvlakking.

Speciale aandacht gaat uit naar bewegend beeld, dat zowel vanuit cinematografie als vanuit beeldende kunst belicht wordt. De arthouse filmprogrammatie van Cinema ZED wordt aangevuld met verdiepende filmavonden, ingericht in samenwerking met Courtisane en de KU Leuven. In de STUK Expozaal gaan we van start met een nieuwe reeks rond multiple-screen video-installaties. Bewegend beeld op meerdere schermen; ruimtelijk videowerk waar je je als bezoeker tussen de schermen bevindt in plaats van voor een scherm. Opgelet, de openingsuren voor deze expo’s zijn anders: van 14u tot 18u in het weekend, van 18u tot 22u in de week.

Zo kan je meteen ook die dansvoorstelling of dat concert meepikken.

Artefact blijft een vaste waarde in de BEELD programmatie van STUK. Aan de hand van een thema dat toelaat in te spelen op nieuwe ontwikkelingen in wetenschap en technologie, daagt het je uit om met een kritische blik naar de wereld rondom je te kijken. In februari 2016 richten we onze blik naar boven voor Up in the Air. Dit najaar nodigen we je echter al uit in Playground, het festival bij uitstek waar podiumkunsten en beeldende kunsten elkaar ontmoeten. De white cube van een tentoonstelling en de black box van het theater inspireren elkaar meer dan je zou denken. In nauwe samenwerking met museum M speelt Playground hier op in met kunstwerken, voorstellingen en experiment.

Ook in de toekomst stelt STUK de zorg voor haar kunstenaars centraal. Het streven naar de best mogelijke presentatiecontext, maar ook het ondersteunen van nieuw werk in ontwikkelings- en

productiefase zorgt ervoor dat kunstenaars met vertrouwen kunnen verderbouwen aan hun oeuvre; het werk dat ons een nieuw perspectief biedt.

Evenveel zorg wil STUK besteden aan jullie, onze bezoekers. De omkaderende programmatie van de expo’s en filmavonden geven de mogelijkheid om je op verschillende manieren in het werk van deze beeldende kunstenaars te verdiepen. Daarnaast laten lezingenreeksen zoals Auditorium 15/16, Ongehoord en Grijze Cellen toe om je blikveld te verruimen.

STUK stapt dit najaar tot slot ook mee in The Big Draw, het vijfdaags tekenfestival dat heel de stad inpalmt. Wat het Berlijnse duo Sonice Development voor ons in petto heeft, ontdek je van 7 tot 11 oktober in het STUKcafé.

STUK, A HOUSE FOR IMAGE In september 2015, STUK opens its doors as a House for Dance, Image and Sound.

The Image and Visual Arts programme in our renewed arts centre reflects a great interest in the societal context from which it is born: in other words, art and life are the central focus in STUK. What can art tell us about the way we live together?

Which forces guide our society? And how do artists relate to these?

STUK works together with contemporary visual artists who explore these complex topics. Strenghtened by all the knowledge and perspectives Leuven has to offer, attentive to local, national and international artworks, and with a lot of confidence in our visitors. Because it is relevant, and has the potential to counterbalance trends of simplification and superficiality.

Attention, in particular, will be paid to the moving image, both from a cinematographic as well as a visual arts point of view. In addition to the arthouse film programming of Cinema ZED we will be hosting in-depth film nights, organised in collaboration with Courtisane and the KU Leuven. In our main exhibtion space, STUK Expozaal, we will kick off a new series of exhibitions featuring multiple screen audio-visual installations. Spatial video works where you find yourself in between the screens, rather than in front of one. The opening hours for these exhibitions are slightly different to usual: from 2pm until 6pm on weekends, and 6pm until 10pm on weeknights. Making it easy to combine these with a dance performance or concert.

Artefact continues as a stronghold in STUK’s image programme. By focusing on a topic that allows to dig into the new developments in science and technology, Artefact challenges us to critically observe the world around us. In February 2016 we turn our gaze up, towards the sky for Up in the Air. However this autumn Playground invites you to the festival where performing arts and visual arts meet. The white cube of the gallery and the black box of the theatre inspire each other more than one would imagine. In close collaboration with museum M, Playground looks at these cross overs with artworks, performances and experiment.

Supporting our artists continues to be a central concert for STUK. Creating the best possible contexts to present the works, but also supporting the development and production of new work, allows artists to confidently continue building their oeuvre: new work that offers us new perspectives.

STUK wishes to dedicate an equal amount of care to you, our visitors. The exhibitions as well as the film nights receive customized framing, offering different approaches to explore the work of these visual artists. In addition, lecture series such as Auditorium 15/16, Ongehoord and Gray Cells offer the means to broaden your horizons.

Last but not least, this autumn STUK is also participating in The Big Draw, a five-day drawing festival throughout the city. Come and discover what Berlin artist duo Sonice Development has in stock for you, from 7 until 11 October in STUKcafé.

Geïnspireerd door een citaat van de Oostenrijks-Amerikaanse psycho-analist Wilhelm Reich: ‘Every muscular contraction contains the history and meaning of its origin’ transformeert Koester de typische bewegingen uit de westernwereld tot een vreemd soort dans.

Dansers Pieter Ampe, Boglarka Börcsök, Liz Kinoshita en Halla Olafsdottir nemen poses aan, trekken en richten een pistool, vallen aan en verdedigen in een schijnbaar oncontroleerbare stroom van schokkende bewegingen en expressies.

Ze struinen zo doorheen een choatisch doolhof van gangen. De titel en het concept van het werk, The Place of Dead Roads, ontleende Koester aan een roman van William S. Burroughs Wild West, waarin Burroughs het verhaal vertelt van Kim Carsons, een in 1899 doodgeschoten cowboy die uit/aan zijn dode lichaam probeert te ontsnappen.

De dansers in The Place of Dead Roads zijn geen onbekenden voor STUK: Pieter Ampe presenteert in het najaar een duet in STUK en Liz Kinoshita werkt onder meer met Daniel Linehan, Thomas Hauert en Tino Seghal.

In the video installation The Place of Dead Roads (2013), Danish artist Joachim Koester takes us on a journey to a subterranean world; a ‘road used by the dead’. Inspired by a quote by the Austrian-American psycho-analyst Wilhelm Reich: ‘Every muscular contraction contains the history and meaning of its origin’, Koester transforms the typical movements from the Western world into an odd kind of dance.

Dancers Pieter Ampe, Boglarka Börcsök, Liz Kinoshita and Halla Olafsdottir take on different poses, draw and aim their gun, attack and defend in a seemingly uncontrollable stream of jerky movements and expressions. Koester borrowed the title and concept of the work, The Place of Dead Roads, from a novel by William S. Burroughs Wild West, in which Burroughs tells the story of Kim Carsons, a cowboy who attempts to escape his own dead body, after being fatally shot in 1899.

Note that the dancers in The Place of Dead Roads, are quite familiar to STUK: Pieter Ampe will present a duet in STUK in the fall, and Liz Kinoshita works a.o. with Daniel Linehan, Thomas Hauert and Tino Seghal.

Kunstenaar Aernoudt Jacobs presenteert met Heliofoon een installatie die zonlicht omzet in geluid. Voor de ontwikkeling van deze installatie onderzocht Jacobs het foto-akoestisch prinicpe zoals ontdekt door Alexander Graham Bell aan het einde van de 19de eeuw. Bell bewees dat een sterke lichtbron kan omgezet worden in een geluidsgolf, en dat bovendien elk materiaal een sonoriteit heeft dat hoorbaar gemaakt kan worden met behulp van een sterke lichtbron. De uitvindingen van Bell leidden o.a. tot de voorloper van de draadloze telefoon, en nu dus ook tot Heliofoon. Het basisprincipe van Heliofoon is eenvoudig: energie van de zon wordt omgezet in geluid, zonder elektronische versterking. In het ontwerp combineert Jacobs een indrukwekkende verzameling aan traditionele en ‘cutting-edge’ technologieën. De installatie volgt het traject van de zon, vangt het zonlicht en concentreert het via een parabolische lens op één punt. Daar wordt het door een roterende schijf in kleine fragmentjes opgedeeld. Een foto-akoestische cel transformeert de lichtfragmenten in geluid die via een grote hoorn hoorbaar gemaakt worden. Met Heliofoon creëerde Jacobs een muziekstuk voor de zon waarbij de tonaliteit van de installatie steeds verandert met de sterkte van het licht. De notie ‘omgevingsgeluid’ krijgt op die manier een heel andere dimensie.

With Heliophone, artist Aernoudt Jacobs presents an installation which turns sunlight into sound. In order to create this installation, Jacobs researched the ‘photoacoustic principle’ as discovered by Alexander Graham Bell at the end of the 19th century. Bell proved that a strong light source can be converted into an acoustic wave and, moreover that any material comes with a sonority that will be revealed by hitting it with a strong beam of light.

The inventions of Bell led a.o. to the predecessor of the wireless telephone, and now indeed also to Heliophone. The basic principle of Heliophone is simple: energy from the sun is transformed into sound without electronic amplification. In the design, however, Jacobs combines an impressive array of traditional and cutting-edge technologies.

The installation follows the trajectory of the sun, catching the sunlight and focusing it, via a parabolic lens, onto one point. There, a rotating disk chops the light up into small fragments. A photo-acoustic cell further transforms the light fragments into sound, made audible by a large horn. With Heliophone, Jacobs created a sound piece for the sun; the tonality of the installation constantly changing with the intensity of light. In this way, the notion of ‘environmental sounds’ gains an entirely different connotation.

On the occasion of the first public presentation

Naar aanleiding van de eerste publieke presentatie van Heliofoon, wordt in de STUK Verbeeckzaal een verzameling ontwerpen en ontwerpelementen gepresenteerd die gebaseerd zijn op het foto-akoestisch principe. Operationele prototypes die werken op basis van laser of ledlicht staan naast een DIY chopper en enkele paraboolspiegels. Jacobs geeft inzicht in de verschillende ontwerpcomponenten: van lenzen en ‘choppers’, tot foto-akoestische cellen en hoorns in verschillende materialen en formaten. Plannen en tekeningen verduidelijken verder het denkproces en de ontwerpbeslissingen.

Teach them: the theory of freedom!

In de multichannel video-installatie The Theory of Freedom (2015) neemt de Duits-Noorse kunstenaar Bjørn Melhus de begrippen vrijheid, kapitalisme en religie onder de loep. Gefascineerd door Amerikaanse tv-series, science fiction en hedendaagse beeldcultuur, grijpt Melhus regelmatig naar teksten geluidsmateriaal als basis voor de karakters en dialogen in zijn films. Zo laat hij in The Theory of Freedom materiaal van Amerikaanse films als Armageddon en Deep Impact in dialoog treden met de controversiële neoliberale ideëen van de Russisch-Amerikaanse schrijfster en filosofe Ayn Rand (1905-1982). Als auteur van Atlas Shrugged ligt Rand aan de basis van menig invloedrijke en conservatieve denktank in de VS. Met haar concept van ‘objectivisme’, waarin individueel geluk boven dat van de gemeenschap staat en privatisering en volledige deregularisatie van de markt redding moet brengen, legde ze de filosofische basis voor het neoliberale kapitalisme. In The Theory of Freedom, portretteert Melhus haar als een tirannieke minnares die hoofdpersonages Mister Freedom en Miss Independence, en vervolgens een groep half-dode mannen in een mortuarium indoctrineert met haar vrije markt filosofie.

In his multichannel video installation The Theory of Freedom (2015), German-Norway artist Bjørn Melhus embarks on an investigation into the concepts of freedom, capitalism and religion. Fascinated by American TV series, science fiction and contemporary visual culture, Melhus appropriates text and sound materials, and uses these as a basis for the characters and dialogues in his films. In Theory of Freedom, for example, he combines material from American movies such as Armageddon and Deep Impact with the controversial neoliberal ideas of the Russian-American writer and philosopher Ayn Rand (1905-1982). As the author of Atlas Shrugged, Rand was at the forefront of influential, conservative thinkthanks in the US. With her concept of ‘objectivism’, in which individual happiness trumps that of the community and the path to salvation lies in the privatisation and complete deregulation of the economy, she provided a philosophical foundation for neoliberal capitalism.

Net zoals in veel van zijn films, speelt Melhus ook in The Theory of Freedom’ met thema’s als identiteit, religie, kapitalisme en globalisatie. Hij

As in many of his films, Melhus addresses topics such as identity, religion, capitalism and globalisation. He exposes and caricatures in a very specific

MOVING IMAGE —FOCUS Samen met Courtisane, het Lieven Gevaert Centre en het Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte (KU Leuven) biedt STUK vanaf het najaar 2015 een nieuwe reeks verdiepende filmavonden onder de noemer MOVING IMAGE - FOCUS. We zetten het werk van één cineast centraal en omkaderen met in- of uitleidingen, analyses, Q&A met de cineast of een workshop. Twee avonden staan op de agenda voor dit najaar, waarvan we de eerste hier kunnen aankondigen: In the autumn of 2015, in collaboration with Courtisane, Lieven Gevaert Centre and the Institute of Philosophy (KU Leuven), STUK kicks off a new series of in-depth film nights. During each event, we focus on the work of one director and discuss his or her work through an introduction, lecture, analysis, Q&A with the director, or a workshop. Als een expressionistische barokmeester vervolgt

Portugees cineast Pedro Costa zijn eigenzinnige pad met Cavalo Dinheiro (Horse Money). De film kruipt als het ware in het hoofd van Ventura (ook al te zien in Colossal Youth, 2006), die als jonge Kaapverdiër naar Lissabon kwam voor werk en in zijn nadagen, geplaagd door Parkinson, achtervolgd wordt door spoken uit het verleden. In de van hem bekende lange, statische shots legt de eigenzinnige regisseur Venturas ontmoetingen met vrienden en vreemden vast; ontmoetingen die soms alleen in zijn fantasie lijken te bestaan.

Cavalo Dinheiro, bekroond op de filmfestivals van o.a. Locarno, New York, BFI London, Hong Kong en München, valt op door het beeldschone camerawerk en de schitterende tableaus, waar Ventura in ronddoolt als een schim van zijn vroegere, sterke zelf.

As an expressionist baroque master, Portuguese director Pedro Costa continues on his wayward path with Cavalo Dinheiro (Horse Money). The film crawls, as it were, into the mind of Ventura (also to be seen in Colossal Youth, 2006), who as a young Cape Verdean came to Lisbon for work and, in his latter days and plagued by Parkinson’s, is pursued by ghosts from the past. In his characteristic long, static shots, the idiosyncratic director registers Ventura’s encounters with friends and strangers; encounters that occasionally only seem to exist in his imagination.

Cavalo Dinheiro, awarded with several prices at the film festivals of a.o. Locarno, New York, BFI London, Hong Kong and Munich, is striking for its beautiful camera work and stunning tableaux, in which Ventura roams as a ghost of his former, powerful self.

De kunstenaars combineren in hun praktijk vrijuit elementen uit installatie, tekst, film, sculptuur, architectuur of choreografie. In live performances brengen ze objecten en lichamen samen en scheppen ze visuele beelden die reflecteren over kunst, de wereld en de mediatisering van het leven. Voor de negende keer op rij brengt Playground een diversiteit aan kunstwerken, voorstellingen en experiment in het boeiende veld tussen podium en beeldende kunst.

De laatste jaren is de interesse van de beeldende kunst wereld voor performance opnieuw toegenomen. In nauwe samenwerking met museum M speelt Playground hier op in. We stellen graag vier projecten voor met wortels in de beeldende kunst: Guy De Cointet (1934-1983) transformeert taal tot een spel van visuele tekens met absurde en mysterieuze betekenissen. Romantiek, referenties naar soapfeuilletons, koken, literatuur, plastische chirurgie en Hollywood doorkruisen elkaar in de surreële voorstelling Comme il est blond!.

Kristof Van Gestel nodigt je uit voor een individueel gesprek, via zijn kunstwerken. Een tiental sculpturen/objecten zijn het uitgangspunt voor een verkenning van vorm, inhoud, interpretatie, beleving en gebruik van kunst. De reacties van de toeschouwer op de kunstwerken, en de reacties van de kunstenaar op de toeschouwer zijn het startpunt.

Een operazangeres zingt een aria ondertiteld door een ledbord. De tekst is een compilatie van internetcommentaren op sterren die technieken gebruiken om hun performance te verbeteren.

Zoals de gedopeerde Lance Armstrong of Beyoncé die playbackt tijdens Obama’s inhuldiging. Cally Spooner onderzoekt de rol van hysterie en hoe media met helden omgaan.

In recent years we see a renewed interest of visual artists for performance. In close collaboration with M museum Playground focuses on that. We gladly propose four projects with roots in the visual arts.

Guy de Cointet (1934-1983) transforms language into an interplay of colour, visual signs and form.

Romance, frustration and a whole series of references to soap operas, cooking, literature, plastic surgery and Hollywood weave in and out of his surreal performance Comme il est blond!.

Kristof Van Gestel invites you for an individual talk, through his artworks. Some ten sculptures/objects form the base of an exploration of form, content, interpretation, perception and use of art. The starting point is the way the audience responds to the artworks and the way the artist responds to the audience.

An opera singer performs an aria subtitled by an LED display. The messages shown are comments on YouTube videos by disgruntled fans responding to footage in which their heroes outsourced their live performances to technology: the Lance Armstrong doping scandal, for instance, or Beyoncé lip-syncing at the Obama inauguration.

This work by Cally Spooner reflects her research into hysteria in the media.

In 10 chapters, Tongue PhD, the new performance

by Ieva Misevičiūtė, investigates ten different meanings of the tongue. The tongue reminds us of animals and instincts, yet we also use it to express our humanness. It is the bridge between madness and intelligence.

Playground is a haven for artists who are not bound to one single discipline. They combine elements from installations, texts, sculptures, architecture or choreography. They assemble objects and bodies and create visual images that reflect upon art, the world and the mediatization of life. For the ninth time Playground presents a diversity of artworks, exhibitions and experiments in the fascinating field between performance and visual arts.

In Artefact 2016: Up in the Air gaan we op zoek naar de poëtische, politieke en economische parameters die onze verhouding tot het luchtruim bepalen. De spirituele dimensies die nauw verbonden lijken met een ‘daarboven’, de tekenen van hoop of troost waarvoor we onze blik naar boven richten, het proberen begrijpen van het ongrijpbare en soms onzichtbare, staan in sterk contrast met de meer praktische politieke en economische benaderingen die ons gebruik van het luchtruim organiseren en reguleren in domeinen zoals transport, scanning en bewaking, en luchtkwaliteit.

De commerciële ontwikkeling van ‘unmanned aerial vehicles’ (drones) en het gebrek aan een goed functionerend wettelijk kader, heeft van het gebruik van het luchtruim een ‘hot topic’ gemaakt.

President Barack Obama illustreerde de niet-inmijn-achtertuin politiek op prachtige wijze toen een drone, jawel, in zijn achtertuin landde. Met een Europese deadline inzake het wetgevend kader voor het commercieel gebruik van drones in het voorjaar van 2016 belooft deze thematiek steeds urgenter op de agenda te komen. Maar, het gebruik van het luchtruim voor welk doel en met welke technologie dan ook, heeft een lange geschiedenis.

En zo ook de kritische vragen en bedenkingen die met elk gebruik van het luchtruim gepaard gaan.

De kunstwerken en –projecten in Up in the Air plaatsen de hedendaagse kritische maatschappelijke vragen in een bredere context die onze verhouding tot het luchtruim als onderwerp neemt, ongeacht de gebruikte technologieën.

Artefact 2016: Up in the Air, aims to explore the poetic, political and economic parameters that guide our relation to airspace. The spiritual dimensions that seem to be closely related to an ‘up-there’, the hopes and dreams for which we turn our gaze up, the desire to understand the intangible and sometimes invisible, stand in stark contrast to the more practical political and economic approaches that organize and regulate our use of air space in areas such as transportation, scanning and surveillance, and air quality control. Commercial development of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and the lack of a functioning legal framework in relation to it has turned the topic of how to run airspace into a burning issue. President Barack Obama himself exemplified the not-in-my-backyard attitude beautifully when an UAV landed, well, in his backyard.

With a European deadline for the legislative framework of commercial drone flight in Spring 2016, the topic will become ever more relevant in the near future. And with it, the critical questions and considerations about any use of air space. The art works and projects in Up in the Air position these contemporary critical questions in a wider context exploring our relation to air space, regardless of the technologies at hand.

Artefact is an initiative of the Province Vlaams-Brabant in collaboration with Stad Leuven. Artefact is supported by the KU Leuven in the context of the policy priority ‘Art and Science’.

THE BIG DRAW: SONICE DEVELOPMENT - WAVING NOTION

WO 7 > ZO 11 OKT — DOORLOPEND, VAN 14:00 TOT 22:00 STUKCAFÉ — GRATIS STUK presenteert in het kader van The Big Draw een nieuw werk van het Berlijnse kunstenaarsduo Sonice Development. In Waving Notion, laat het duo een robot los op een muur in het STUKcafé.

Interagerend met de ruimtelijke structuur van de muur en aangestuurd door een algoritme, werkt de robot gedurende vijf dagen aan een tekening; een constellatie van lijnen die uitgroeit tot een dicht kleurvlak.

The Big Draw is een rondreizend tekenfestival dat in oktober voor vijf dagen neerstrijkt in Leuven. In their work Waving Notion, they release a robot onto a wall in STUK Café. Guided by an algorythm, the robot interacts with the spatial structure of the wall, creating a drawing in five days; a constellation of lines evolving into a dense coloured surface.

The Big Draw is a travelling drawing festival, which will take over the city of Leuven during five days in October 2015. GRIJZE CELLEN/GRAY CELLS: EEN TOEKOMST ZONDER KANKER? A FUTURE WITHOUT CANCER? 2 NOV — 19:30 > 21:00 STUK AUDITORIUM — GRATIS

Lezingen en een gesprek met Hans Clevers en Peter Carmeliet, twee topwetenschappers die baanbrekend onderzoek verrichten op het gebied van kankergenezing. Hans Clevers (UMC Utrecht en Prinses Máxima Centrum voor Kinderoncologie) ontwikkelde dit jaar met stamcelonderzoek een methode om kankermedicatie toe te spitsen op het genoom van een patiënt. Vrijwel tegelijkertijd vond een onderzoeksteam van het VIB onder leiding van Peter Carmeliet (VIB en KU Leuven) een manier om de groei van tumoren te stoppen door kankercellen uit te hongeren. Na lezingen van Hans Clevers en Peter Carmeliet volgt een gesprek over grensverleggend kankeronderzoek.

Stad en Architectuur organiseert een thematische lezingenreeks over architectuur, stedenbouw en design. Curator van dienst voor het seizoen 2015-2016 is Silvio Carta, architect, onderzoeker en docent aan de universiteit van Hertfordshire (UK). Hij stelde een reeks van 8 lezingen samen over de architectuur van informatie: data, mensen en publieke ruimte. In het najaar verwelkomen we jullie voor vier boeiende avonden:

Lectures by and a conversation with Hans Clevers and Peter Carmeliet, two renowned scientists who are responsible for cutting-edge research in the field of cancer treatment. Hans Clevers (UMC Utrecht and Prinses Máxima Centre for Paediatric Oncology) developed a method using stemcell research to direct cancer medication on the genome of a patient. Virtually at the same time, the VIB research team led by Peter Carmeliet (VIB and KU Leuven) discovered a way to stop the growth of tumours by starving cancer cells. The lectures of Hans Clevers and Peter Carmeliet are followed by a conversation on pioneering cancer research.

Van 30 november tot 11 december vindt in Parijs de 21ste VN-Klimaatconferentie plaats. Na de flop in Kopenhagen in 2009 is de inzet groot. Zal het lukken om in Parijs tot een internationaal bindend kllimaatverdrag te komen? En zo ja, zijn we dan nog wel op tijd? Een debat hierover met Jos Delbeke (hoofdonderhandelaar Europese Commissie), Nathalie Eggermont (klimaatactiviste Climate Express), Francesca Vanthielen (de klimaatzaak) en Chris Jacobson (moderator, auteur en duurzaamheidsexpert).

METTE INGVARTSEN 69 POSITIONS WO 21 & DO 22 OKT . 20:30 Naaktheid, excessen, orgastische erotiek, ritualistisch genot, publieksparticipatie en politiek engagement, het zijn allemaal uitingen van de tegencultuur en de experimentele performances van de jaren 60.

Wat betekent de seksuele utopie nu nog?

Heeft het lichaam de kracht om iets te veranderen in de maatschappij?

Excesses, nudity, orgy eroticism, ritualistic pleasure, audience participation and political engagement, all expressions of the sexual utopia particular to the counterculture and experimental performances of the 60’s. Ingvartsen places sexuality, the relation between the politics of the body and structures of society in focus.

WORKSHOP MUZIEK TEKENEN MET RUTGER ZUYDERVELT (8-12 JAAR) WO 23 SEP – 14:00 & 16:00 Geluidskunstenaar Rutger Zuydervelt, ook bekend als Machinefabriek, leert kinderen in deze workshop muziek te tekenen. Kom te weten hoe kleur en vorm klinkt en laat een muzikant je getekende stuk uitvoeren!

JOACHIM KOESTER °1962 — Denemarken/Denmark

Joachim Koester is een conceptueel en experimenteel beeldend kunstenaar die werkt met video, 16mm-film, installatie en fotografie. In zijn werk gaat hij op zoek naar de grijze zones tussen bewust en onbewust, het rationale en het occulte. Ook het lichaam en de notie van performance zijn vaak terugkerende thema’s. Koesters werk wordt internationaal gepresenteerd en maakt deel uit van collecties van o.a. Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Statens Museum for Kunst, Kopenhagen; SMAK, Gent; en Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam. Joachim Koester woont en werkt in Kopenhagen.

Joachim Koester is a conceptual and experimental visual artist working with video, 16mm film, installation and photography. His work explores those troubled zones between conscious and unconscious, the occult and the rational.

Also the body and the notion of performance are recurring themes.

His work is shown internationally and is part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen; SMAK, Ghent; and Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam. AERNOUDT JACOBS °1968 — Belgïe/Belgium

Aernoudt Jacobs is een kunstenaar gefascineerd door geluid in al zijn vormen. In zijn praktijk verkent Jacobs hoe geluiden en fenomenen kunnen leiden tot geluidsprocessen die de aandacht en de ervaringswereld van de toeschouwer kunnen raken. Zijn werken zijn het resultaat van een onderzoek van verschillende aspecten van veldopnames en de wijze waarop zij geassimileerd kunnen worden in nieuwe vormen en contexten. Jacobs werk wordt internationaal gepresenteerd in musea en festivals. Samen met

Christoph De Boeck leidt hij het platform voor geluidskunst, Overtoon. Aernoudt Jacobs woont en werkt in Brussel.

Aernoudt Jacobs is an artist fascinated with sound in all its forms. In his work, he researches how sounds and phenomena can trigger sonic processes that affect the observer’s scope of perception and experience. His works results from an investigation into the different aspects of field recordings and the assimilation of the resulting material into new forms and contexts. Jacobs’ work has been internationally presented in musea and at festivals. With Christoph De Boeck, he co-directs Overtoon, a platform for sound art.

Aernoudt Jacobs lives and works in Brussels.

SONICE DEVELOPMENT

Sonice Development is het Berlijnse collectief van kunstenaars en uitvinders Julian Adenauer en Michael Haas. In hun praktijk ontwikkelen ze tekenmachines en interactieve installaties die de grens tussen het analoge en digitale, technologie en kunst, idee en materialiteit overschrijden. Sonice Development woont en werkt in Berlijn.

Sonice Development is Julian Adenauer and Michael Haas – a duo of artists and inventors. Their work is focused on drawing-machines and interactive installations that transcend the borders between the digital and the physical, technology and art, ideas and materiality. Sonice Development lives and works in Berlin.

BJØRN MELHUS °1966 — Duitsland/Germany

Bjørn Melhus is een Duits-Noorse kunstenaar die werkt met film, video, installatie en fotografie.

In zijn werk gaat hij dieper in op thema’s als religie, kapitalisme, en globalisering. Zijn praktijk van fragmentatie, destructie en reconstructie van bekende figuren, thema’s en strategieën van de massamedia opent een netwerk

van nieuwe interpretaties en kritische commentaren, en herdefinieert bovendien de relatie tussen massamedia en de kijker. Zijn werk wordt zowel op internationale filmfestivals als in tentoonstellingscontexten gepresenteerd, en maakt deel uit van diverse vaste collecties. Bjørn Melhus woont en werkt in Berlijn.

Bjørn Melhus is a German-Norwegian visual artist working with film, video, installation and photography. In his work, he investigates topics such as religion, capitalism, and globalisation.

His practice of fragmentation, destruction, and reconstitution of well-known figures, topics, and strategies of the mass media opens up not only a network of new interpretations and critical commentaries, but also defines the relationship of mass media and viewer anew. His work is presented both at international film festivals as well as in exhibition contexts.

His work is acquired into various permanent collections. Bjørn Melhus lives and works in Berlin.

PEDRO COSTA °1959, Portugal

Pedro Costa is een Portugese filmregisseur. Hij werkte na zijn studie geschiedenis aan de universiteit van Lissabon als regieassistent voor Jorge Silva Melo, Vítor Gonçalves en João Botelho. Costa debuteerde op 30-jarige leeftijd met O sangue/Bloed, de aftrap van een veelgeprezen oeuvre over mensen in de marge van de maatschappij. Pedro Costa woont en werkt in Lissabon.

Pedro Costa is a Portuguese film director. After his history studies at the University of Lisbon, Costa worked as an assistant director for Jorge Silva Melo, Vítor Gonçalves and João Botelho. He made his first film at age 30, O sangue/ Blood, the start of a much-acclaimed oeuvre giving centre-stage to those of us living on the fringes of society. Pedro Costa lives and works in Lisbon.
