INTRODUCTION

INLEIDING Hoe kunnen we handelen in deze complexe tijden? Hoe kunnen we nog begrip voor elkaar tonen? Hoe vormen we een genuanceerde mening wanneer polarisatie de boventoon voert? Die vragen vormen een rode draad doorheen het nieuwe dansseizoen, dat uitgesproken internationaal georiënteerd is. We nodigen kunstenaars uit die samen met ons tijdelijke en alternatieve werelden, ruimtes voor interactie en mogelijkheden creëren of een ander perspectief bieden.

Opmerkelijk veel choreografen gaan dit seizoen aan de slag met onbemiddelde en lichamelijke ervaring.

Begüm Erciyas, Vera Tussing, Benjamin Vandewalle & Yoann Durant e.a. zijn vertegenwoordigers van een nieuwe generatie die aan de hand van de zintuigen een direct contact zoeken met het publiek. Ze verkennen de fysieke beleving van de aanraking en de stem en openen met eenvoudige, speelse middelen poëtische verbeeldingsruimtes. Dat contemplatief en trager werk nodigt uit om te pauzeren in een wereld in overdrive. Het aanscherpen van de zintuigen en de introspectie die ermee gepaard gaat, werkt bevrijdend.

Makers zoals Michiel Vandevelde, Seppe Baeyens en Katrien Oosterlinck experimenteren met alternatieve vormen van samenzijn. Ze doen dit zowel in de klassieke, frontale theatersetting als in constellaties waarbij de grenzen tussen kunstenaar en publiek vervagen. Door het publiek actief te betrekken, wijzen ze erop dat we ook buiten de muren van het theater een rol hebben te spelen en kunnen handelen. Die utopische gedachte is uiteraard niet nieuw en zagen we bijvoorbeeld al in de jaren 60 bij The Living Theatre. 50 jaar na mei ’68 gaat Michiel Vandevelde aan de slag met hun erfenis.

In zekere zin staat onze positie als kijker ook centraal in het werk van Arkadi Zaides, Mette Ingvartsen en Alexander Vantournhout. Ze tonen dat onze blik niet onschuldig is en leggen machtsrelaties bloot: Arkadi Zaides in de manier waarop we omgaan met de vluchtelingenproblematiek en grensovergangen en Mette Ingvartsen in de manier waarop pornografie omnipresent is in onze samenleving. In het nieuwe duet van Alexander Vantournhout ondervinden we aan den lijve hoe het objectiveren van lichamen in gewelddadigheid kan ontsporen.

Een ander terugkerend thema is rouw, verlies en dood, niet toevallig op een moment waarop we nood hebben aan nieuwe rituelen voor het markeren van de grote

levensmomenten. Grace Ellen Barkey, Etienne Guilloteau & Claire Croizé maar ook de Braziliaanse choreograaf Marcelo Evelin halen inspiratie uit de donkere kant van het leven maar plaatsen daartegenover de vitaliteit en de helende kracht van de dans. Florentina Holzinger en Mathias Ringgenberg gebruiken de kracht van het theater dan weer voor het opbouwen van een ongrijpbare, vloeiende identiteit.

Dit seizoen maken we opnieuw ruimte voor een uitgelezen selectie voorstellingen van nieuwe namen en gevestigde waarden die teruggaan naar de essentie van het maken en het ‘métier’ van het choreograferen. De aloude liaison tussen dans en muziek blijft springlevend en het is opvallend dat het koor, samenzang en polyfonie in verschillende voorstellingen prominent aanwezig zijn. We zijn verheugd dat we het werk van onder meer Noé Soulier, Rosas / Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker en het Dance On Ensemble met live muzikale begeleiding kunnen presenteren.

De allianties met festivals als Transit en het familiefestival Rode Hond worden voortgezet en in samenwerking met Europalia Indonesia brengen we onder meer de Indonesische choreograaf Eko Supriyanto naar Leuven.

Later op het seizoen voegen we dansvoorstellingen toe aan de vertrouwde festivals Playground (dat het spannende grensgebied tussen de podiumkunsten en de beeldende kunsten verkent) en Artefact, dat dit seizoen vertrekt van de werktitel Zeldzame aarde: verhalen uit de grond.

De werking Jong Publiek zetten we onverminderd voort met fABULEUS als bevoorrechte partner. Zij presenteren dit seizoen maar liefst drie producties voor verschillende leeftijden en bieden een platform voor nieuw danstalent.

Nieuwe perspectieven bieden we niet alleen via voorstellingen. Aan de hand van omkaderende activiteiten zoals inleidende workshops, masterclasses, nagesprekken, dansbattles en zelfs deelnamemogelijkheden om zelf mee op het podium te staan, bouwt STUK aan een actieve danscommunity voor jong en oud, liefhebber en professional. Die wisselwerking met ons publiek is voor STUK en ook voor de kunstenaars een essentieel onderdeel van de dialoog die we op gang willen brengen.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION How should we approach these complex times? How can we establish a nuanced perceptive and understanding for the other when polarisation seems to predominate?

These questions are common threads throughout this distinctively internationally oriented new dance season.

Artists have been invited to collaborate with us in creating temporary and alternative worlds, spaces for interaction, possibilities and different perspectives.

This season, a striking number of choreographers are working to create direct bodily experiences. Begüm Erciyas, Vera Tussing, Benjamin Vandewalle & Yoann Durant, among others, represent a new generation of choreographers seeking direct contact with audiences through the senses. They explore the physical experience of touch and the voice, creating simple, playful ways to open poetic spaces for the imagination. Contemplative and unhurried, these works invite you to pause within a world in overdrive. This sharpening of the senses and space for introspection is truly liberating.

Makers such as Michiel Vandevelde, Seppe Baeyens and Katrien Oosterlinck experiment with alternative forms of togetherness. They do this both within the classical theatre setting as well as in constellations whereby the boundaries between artist and audience blur.

By actively engaging the public, they point out that we also have a role to play and undertake outside the walls of the theatre. Such utopian ideas are of course not new as we saw in the 1960s in works by The Living Theatre, for example. 50 years after May ’68, Michiel Vandevelde is delving into this legacy.

Our position as an audience is also central to the works of Arkadi Zaides, Mette Ingvartsen and Alexander Vantournhout. They reveal how our perspectives are never innocent and expose such power relations: Arkadi Zaides through the lens of how we deal with issues around refugees and border crossings and Mette Ingvartsen through the lens of pornography’s omnipresence in our society. Through the new duet by Alexander Vantournhout we viscerally experience how the objectification of bodies can lead to violence.

Other recurring themes are mourning, loss and death, again, by no coincidence in a time when we need new rituals to mark such momentous life events. Grace Ellen Barkey, Etienne Guilloteau & Claire Croizé, as well as the Brazilian choreographer Marcelo Evelin, take inspiration

from the dark side of life while facing this with the vitality and healing power of dance. Florentina Holzinger and Mathias Ringgenberg use the power of theatre in the assembling of an elusive, shifting identity.

Again this season, we create space for a broad scope of performances by both new and established names who return to the essence and craft of choreography. The ancient bond between dance and music is still very much alive and it’s striking how the choir, singing in chorus and polyphony are prominent in different performances.

We are delighted to present the work of Noé Soulier, Rosas / Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Dance On Ensemble each with the accompaniment of live music.

Our partnerships with festivals such as Transit and the family festival Rode Hond continue, and in collaboration with Europalia Indonesia we invite, among others, the Indonesian choreographer Eko Supriyanto to Leuven. Later in the season, we bring dance performances to the well-known festivals Playground (which explores the exciting borderline between performing arts and visual arts) and Artefact, this season starting from the working title Rare Earth: stories from below. Our Young Audience programme continues this season with our cherished partners fABULEUS, presenting three productions for different age groups and providing a platform for new dance talent.

Not only do we offer new perspectives through performances: through our parallel programme of introductory workshops, master classes, public talks, dance battles and even opportunities to participate on stage, STUK is building an active dance community for young and old, enthusiasts and professionals. This interaction with our audience is essential, both for STUK and the artists, to the dialogue we aim to ignite.

VOICING PIECES N Het werk van Begüm Erciyas heeft iets magisch. Aan de hand van bedrieglijk eenvoudige en speelse ingrepen zet ze de verbeelding van de toeschouwer aan het werk of op het verkeerde been. In de installatie Voicing Pieces wordt je eigen stem de protagonist. In de intimiteit van een geluidsdicht mini-theater word je zelf de toeschouwer van je eigen stem. Het tegelijk spreken en luisteren zorgt voor een theatrale en choreografische ervaring, die bij elke deelnemer tot een unieke vertolking leidt. De stem komt los van het lichaam en wordt de plaats van de actie, een verrassing, een voorstelling. Maar klinkt je eigen stem tegelijk niet altijd misleidend en onbehaaglijk? Eerder dan jezelf te herkennen in de vreemdeling is Voicing Pieces een uitnodiging om de vreemdeling in jezelf te ontdekken.

E There’s something truly magical about the work of Begüm Erciyas. By means of deceptively simple, playful interventions she sparks the viewer’s imagination, at times setting them off on the wrong foot. In the installation Voicing Pieces your own voice becomes the protagonist. And in turn you become audience to your own voice within the intimate, soundproof mini-­theatre.

Simultaneously speaking and listening, the work becomes a theatrical and choreographic experience, and a unique interpretation for each participant. The voice is separated from the body and becomes the focus for action, surprise and performance. But does your own voice not always sound somewhat misleading or awkward? As opposed to recognising yourself in the other, Voicing Pieces invites you to discover the other within yourself.

IMAGINE MOVING ROCKS N Aan de hand van levensgrote spelsituaties creëert Katrien Oosterlinck collectieve performances. Deze keer werkt ze met publieksgroepen die elkaar van ver of dichtbij kennen: familie, vrienden, buren, collega’s, kennissen … De spelinstructies vormen het dramatisch kader. De klassieke communicatiecodes worden overboord gegooid en maken plaats voor een non-verbale, lichamelijke ontmoeting. Een gids en een geluidsband leiden de groep langs verschillende groepsopstellingen, fysieke acties en persoonlijke waarnemingen. Een klanklandschap van alledaagse geluiden en subtiele lichtveranderingen kleurt de ervaring. Wat ontstaat is een choreografie van beelden, een esthetische ervaring die zorgt voor een symbolische, abstracte, bevreemdende of poëtische lading. Zo dynamisch als een escape room, zo geanimeerd als een familieweekend.

E Working with life-size game situations, Katrien Oosterlinck creates collective performances. On this occasion she’s working with groups from within society who know each other both closely or from afar: families, friends, neighbours, colleagues, acquaintances …

The game’s rules form the dramatic framework. Classic codes for communication are thrown overboard, making way for a nonverbal, bodily encounter. A guide and an audio track lead the participants through various group dynamics, physical movements, and individual perspectives. A soundscape of everyday noises and subtle changes of light colour the experience. What emerges is a choreography of imagery, an aesthetic experience giving rise to a symbolic, abstract, estranging and poetic charge. This charge differs each time, born from the combined actions of the different groups of participants.

N In den beginne was er niets en toen is dat ook nog eens ontploft.

Met niet veel meer dan zichzelf, een collectie platen­ spelers en een toolkit van veelkleurige emmers, frisbees, huisraad en andere materiaal, bricoleert Louis Vanhaverbeke een eigen universum. Als een multifunctionele discjockey jongleert hij met argumenten, gedachten en songteksten, pompt hij de beste hits naar boven, borstelt referenties eraf tot de gedachten stuiteren en we een nieuwe dimensie inslaan.

Al lopend en zingend ontstaat een levend kleurenwiel.

In gradaties gerangschikt tussen statement en spel. Kan hij aan deze tsunami van objecten en woorden ontsnappen?

Wordt hij door deze rommel geabsorbeerd? Of zijn het juist de tools om de flow voor te blijven?

De ploat blijft hangen, idioot!

E With little more than himself, a collection of record players and a toolkit of different coloured buckets, frisbees, household goods and other artefacts, Louis Vanhaverbeke assembles his own bricolage universe.

Like a multifunctional disc jockey he juggles arguments, thoughts and lyrics, playing beats from the best hits, and churning out references until thoughts bounce off one another and we enter a new dimension.

A walking, singing, live colour wheel. Arranged in gradations between statements and play. Can he escape this tsunami of objects and words? Will he become engulfed by this jumble? Or are these in fact the necessary tools to keep ahead of the flow?

N Zodra het doek opengaat word je meegesleept in een onzekere wereld. Zijn we beland op een begrafenis of op de heropvoering ervan in een opnamestudio? Wie is de moeder? Is ze überhaupt aanwezig? Vanuit het rouwen om een afwezige moeder gaan de spelers het ruimere idee van ‘gemis’ injecteren in het hier en nu, met beweging, dans en een tekst die laveert tussen bevattelijk en mysterieus. De fascinatie voor het idee dat de wereld ons bij momenten overspoelt en overkomt staat centraal, een geamuseerde blik op mislukte pogingen om alles te doen passen in onze visie. Moeder is tegelijk grappig en bevreemdend, verontrustend maar ook verbazingwekkend herkenbaar.

Moeder is het tweede deel van een trilogie die werd ingezet met Vader (2014) en afsluit met Kinderen (2018).

E As soon as the curtain is raised you are drawn into an uncertain world. Have we arrived at a funeral or a re-enactment of one in a recording studio? Who is the mother? Is she even here? Drawing from the sense of grief felt in a mother’s absence the performers build a broader impression of ‘lacking’ in the here and now; through movement, dance and text that navigate between the comprehensible and the mysterious. Central to this performance is a fascination with the idea that our current world overwhelms and overcomes us: an amusing perspective on failed attempts to make everything fit into our worldview. Moeder is both funny and estranging, disturbing but also surprisingly recognisable.

Moeder is the second part of a trilogy that started with Vader (2014) and will be completed with Kinderen (2018).

N Twee lichamen ontmoeten elkaar. Het ene lichaam is actief en handelt, het andere lijkt een levenloos ding. Samen dansen ze een geforceerd duet. Een wankele dans waarin de één de ander tracht te manipuleren en animeren tot ideale sparringpartner, pop of dood ding. Onderweg worden de grenzen tussen intimiteit en perversie afgetast. Raphaël is een zoektocht naar grijswaarden in wat een scherpe tweedeling lijkt maar ook een aangrijpend portret van het wederzijdse tekort dat ons bindt. Een straffe performance.

Alexander Vantournhout en Bauke Lievens kennen we nog van het bejubelde ANECKXANDER, dat je tijdens Dag van de Dans 2016 in STUK kon zien. Ze slagen erin om hedendaagse dans feilloos te rijmen met circus en poppentheater. En dat is in Raphaël niet anders.

E Two bodies meet one another. One body is active and takes the initiative, the other is a lifeless object. Together they dance a forced duet. An unsteady dance in which the one attempts to manipulate and animate the other into an ideal sparring partner, whether a doll or dead entity.

During the sequence, the boundaries between intimacy and perversion are tested. Raphaël is an exploration into the grey areas in an otherwise apparent sharp divide, and simultaneously a poignant portrait of the mutual sense of deficit for things that bind us. A powerful performance.

We know the work of Alexander Vantournhout and Bauke Lievens from their acclaimed performance ANECKXANDER, presented at STUK during the Dag van de Dans 2016. They are masters in creating a flawless combination of contemporary dance with circus and puppetry – and this is no different in Raphaël!

N Choreografe Meg Stuart en schrijver / performance­ kunstenaar Tim Etchells legden samen al een heel parcours van samenwerkingen af. In deze geïmproviseerde ontmoeting gebruiken beide artiesten hun eigen lichaam als een performance-instrument in de gedeelde ruimte van taal en beweging. Ze onderhandelen, heronderhandelen en verkennen samen de thema’s die hun eigen werk kenmerken: van aan- en afwezigheid, over gemis en verlies tot het gebruik van fragmentaire verhaallijnen. Het publiek wordt deelachtig aan een open en fysieke dialoog die geen grote gebaren meer behoeft, maar waaronder zoveel lagen métier zitten. Bij iedere ontmoeting komt de essentie van wat ons mens maakt naar boven. Spectaculair in zijn eenvoud.

E Shown and Told is the latest instalment in a series of collaborations between choreographer Meg Stuart, and writer / performance artist Tim Etchells. In this improvised encounter both artists employ their bodies as performance instruments within a shared space of language and movement. Together they negotiate, renegotiate and explore the themes found in each of their practices: presence and absence, loss and emptiness, and the use of fragmentary storylines. The result is spectacular in its simplicity. The audience share in an open and physical dialogue, in which there’s no need for grand gestures, and under which are layer upon layer of finely crafted meaning. At the point where the interests that both divide and unite the duo intersect, time and again their improvisations reveal the essence of what makes us human.

URBAN DANCE WEEKEND N Urban dance en hedendaagse dans vinden elkaar meer en meer. We zagen al mooie kruisbestuivingen tussen beide disciplines, al zijn er ook nog wat drempels. Daarom organiseert STUK samen met de Leuvense vzw Straatrijk een urban dance weekend met workshops, battles en de eerste avondvullende voorstelling van Straatrijk en de Nederlandse choreograaf Drosha: Needs.

We sluiten het weekend feestelijk af met de vierde editie van DansBAaR, een uniek dans- en partyconcept.

Trio’s van verschillende dansstijlen nemen het tegen elkaar op in een originele 3on3 battle. Breakdancers met hopen battle-ervaring delen de vloer met dansers en danseressen die getraind zijn in diverse dansstijlen zoals ballet, modern, twerking, tapdans, newstyle hiphop … Het levert verrassende confrontaties en kruisbestuivingen op maar vooral een avond waar het dansplezier vanaf spat.

E Urban and contemporary dance encounter one another more and more frequently in recent years. We have already witnessed some incredible blends between the two disciplines, though there are still some barriers. Hence, in collaboration with Leuven’s dance association Straatrijk, STUK is organising a weekend with workshops, battles and the first full-length performance by Straatrijk and the Dutch choreographer Drosha, entitled Needs.

We round up the weekend with a fesitive fourth edition of DansBAaR. DansBAaR introduces a unique dance and party concept. Trios formed from different dance styles go head to head in an original 3-on-3 battle.

Breakdancers with a wealth of battle experience share the floor with dancers trained in a wide variety of dance styles such as ballet, modern, twerking, tap dance, new style hip-hop, … giving rise to surprising confrontations and cross-pollination, and moreover an evening of phenomenal rhythmic pleasure!

Deze speelse lecture-performance gaat op zoek naar hoe dans en muziek verbonden zijn met emoties. Lecture about Sad Music and Happy Dance brengt inzichten uit esthetica, psychologie, dans- en muziektheorie samen. Danseres Shila Anaraki en violiste Aisha Orazbayeva demonstreren de theorie in de praktijk: ze spelen, becommentariëren elkaar en gaan duetten aan. Op een ludieke manier betrekken ze het publiek bij hun betoog. Ze leggen hypotheses voor over de emotionele effecten van de fragmenten en lokken hiermee zowel hilariteit, verwarring als weerstand uit. Ook benieuwd in welke ‘mood’ jij zal zijn na deze voorstelling?

Does the music excite or upset you? This playful lecture performance explores how dance and music connect with your emotions. Lecture about Sad Music and Happy Dance brings together insights from aesthetics, psychology, dance and music theory. MERN Mer- is een stuk voor vijf dansers en vijf zangers gebouwd op renaissancemuziek over dood, verdriet en pijn.

Het begrip ‘eindigheid’, of de vluchtigheid van het leven, is een vitaal onderdeel van het werk van Claire Croizé en Etienne Guilloteau. In Mer- diept het choreografisch duo die thematiek verder uit: de dood komt op het voortoneel, maar toch blijft er ruimte voor lichtheid en vreugde. De titel is afkomstig van de Indo-Europese wortels van ‘mourir’, het Franse woord voor sterven. Tegelijkertijd verwijst het naar de zee: ‘la mer’. De zee als metafoor voor de dood, die wat ‘voorbij’ de einder ligt in zich draagt, een gevoel van grenzeloosheid, mysterie en het onbekende, dat eigen is aan de dood.

Marnix De Cats Pluto-ensemble, gespecialiseerd in oude muziek, staat in voor de muzikale uitvoering. De religieuze en profane polyfonie zal uitstekend tot zijn recht komen in de Predikherenkerk.

E The notion ‘finitude’, or the fleeting nature of life, is a key ingredient in the work of Claire Croizé and Etienne Guilloteau. In Mer- the choreographic duo make an indepth study into this theme: death steps onto the proscenium, yet there’s still space for lightness and joy. Mer- is a performance for five dancers and five singers, based on requiem music and other music dedicated to death, sorrow and pain from the renaissance period.

The title Mer- is derived from the Indo-European roots of mourir, the French word for ‘to die’. And simultaneously refers to the sea: la mer. The sea is a metaphor for death: an entity embodying within itself that which is ‘beyond’ the horizon, a sense of infiniteness, mystery and the unknown that is specific to death.

Marnix De Cat’s Pluto-ensemble, specialised in historical music, provide the musical score for this performance.

Set in the Predikherenkerk, the religious and secular polyphony will be exalted into its own.

N De Noorse Mette Edvardsen ontving in 2016 de prestigieuze Ibsen-prijs voor We to be, het sluitstuk van een trilogie waarin ze verkent hoe ze aan de hand taal kan inspelen op de verbeelding van het publiek. Met OSLO, de hoofdstad van haar geboorteland én een anagram voor solo, gaat ze verder op die ingeslagen weg. De tekst wordt deze keer niet alleen door Mette Edvardsen gebracht, maar weerklinkt door de hele theatrale ruimte, aan de hand van een koor. Er ontvouwt zich een slimme en speelse choreografie die niet enkel visueel is, maar waar ook andere zintuigen bij betrokken zijn: horen en voelen, maar ook denken, herinneren, inbeelden. Eenvoudige en sobere elementen zoals gedachten, woorden, dingen en acties vermenigvuldigen zich in de ruimte en roepen een rijk geschakeerde verbeeldingswereld op. Een hoogst persoonlijke en collectieve ervaring ineen.

E In 2016 Norwegian Mette Edvardsen received the prestigious Ibsen prize for We to be, the final instalment of a trilogy in which she explores how she can play with the audience’s imagination using language. With OSLO, the Norwegian capital and an anagram of ‘solo’, she continues further down this route. On this occasion the text is delivered not only by Mette Edvardsen herself, but is dispersed throughout the entire theatre hall through the voices of a choir. An intelligent and playful choreography is formed, which is not only visual but whereby an array of senses are involved: hearing and feeling, thinking, remembering, and imagining. Simple, sober elements such as thoughts, words, objects, and actions proliferate through the space evoking a rich, colourful and imaginative world. LICHT! [3+] N licht! is een voorstelling waarin het licht aan het dansen gaat. Kleine lichtjes en grote spots tollen over het podium. Het licht danst in het rond en de performers bewegen mee. In licht! maak je kennis met de vele nuances van licht: het schemerlicht van een zaklamp, het felle licht van een grote spot en het reflecterende licht van een spiegel. Elk schijnsel brengt een andere sfeer.

De voorstelling prikkelt je verbeelding. Ze zorgt voor verwondering bij jonge kinderen maar ook bij volwassenen. licht! is een woordeloze danstheatervoorstelling over bewegend licht. Aan het eind van de voorstelling wordt het publiek uitgenodigd om zelf te experimenteren met licht en schaduw.

During licht! you’ll discover a world of nuances in light: the gloom of a torch, the bright light of a larger spot, and the reflected light of a mirror. Each radiating a different atmosphere. The performance teases your senses and imagination. Sparking wonder in young children and adults alike. licht! is a wordless dance performance about the movement of light. At the end of the performance the audience are invited to join in with experimenting with light and shadow themselves.

N Toen bij de componist Gustav Mahler een fatale hartziekte werd vastgesteld, vertrouwde hij aan een vriend toe dat alles wat hij over zichzelf dacht te weten op losse schroeven stond. In die stemming schreef hij Das Lied von der Erde waarvan het laatste lied Der Abschied een van zijn meest persoonlijke werken werd. Het lied bespiegelt de worsteling van de mens met zijn sterfelijkheid tegenover de natuur die eeuwig is en zich steeds weer vernieuwt.

In haar nieuwste voorstelling FOREVER gaat Grace Ellen Barkey aan de slag met diezelfde paradox. ‘Om altijd maar ’t leven te bezingen, dat houdt niemand vol. De dood of liever gezegd de eindigheid der mensen verdient ook een lied, een dansje.’ Het lied, ook de orkestratie, wordt in alle intimiteit als een herinnering gezongen door Maarten Seghers, ondersteund door een trio van frivole, jonge dansers die de partituur gestalte geven temidden van een breekbare porseleinen installatie.

E When the composer Gustav Mahler was diagnosed with a fatal heart disease he confided in a friend that everything he thought he knew about himself had become unhinged. With this mindset he wrote Das Lied von der Erde of which the last song Der Abschied became one of his most personal works. The song reflects our struggle as humans faced with our own mortality, set against nature which is eternal and constantly renews itself.

In her most recent performance FOREVER Grace Ellen Barkey delves into this paradox: ‘No one can sustain constant praise of life. Death or, rather, the finiteness of human life deserves a song or a dance too.’ The song, as well as the orchestration, is sung as an intimate recollection

by Maarten Seghers, supported by the trio of energetic, young dancers that give the score stature amid a fragile porcelain installation.

N Na het zeer succesvolle GIRLS (2013) werkt Ugo Dehaes opnieuw bij fABULEUS met een groep jongeren. Deze keer zet hij een aantal drones, een volwassen hedendaagse danseres en zeven jonge urban dansers tegenover elkaar.

Ze draaien om elkaar heen. Ze observeren, kopiëren, dagen elkaar uit. Solo’s en battles versmelten tot groepsdansen.

Bewegingen botsen of gaan viraal. Verschillende werelden schuren langs elkaar heen en op dat raakvlak ontstaat een nieuwe danstaal.

E After successfully collaborating with fABULEUS for GIRLS (2013), Ugo Dehaes works with a group of young people again in RATS. This time he opposes a couple of drones, an adult contemporary female dancer and seven young urban dancers. They twist around each other. They observe, copy and challenge each other. Solos and battles merge into group dances. Movements collide or go viral.

Different worlds discover each other’s edges, from which a new dance language originates.

CRY JAILOLO N Zeven jonge Indonesische dansers brengen in Cry Jailolo een krachtige boodschap van hoop en optimisme over het voortbestaan van de koraalriffen. Jailolo, gelegen in de Indonesische Molukken, staat bekend als een van de grootste duikplekken ter wereld maar tegelijk dreigt die natuurpracht te verdwijnen door de klimaatsverandering. Eko Supriyanto, zowat de meest invloedrijke Indonesische danser / ­choreograaf van zijn generatie, raakte gefascineerd door zowel de lokale gemeenschap als het waterleven in Jailolo en vond daarvoor inspiratie voor deze creatie. Hij noemt het een voorstelling van ‘stil toerisme’. Strakke ritmes op een dreigende soundtrack worden afgewisseld met expressieve solo’s; net zo mooi en zo rijk als het koraalleven zelf.

E In Cry Jailolo seven young Indonesian dancers deliver a powerful message of hope and optimism concerning the survival of coral reefs. Jailolo, situated on one of Indonesia’s Maluku Islands, is known as one of the greatest diving spots in the world, however, its natural beauty is also under threat of disappearing due to climate change.

Eko Supriyanto, probably the most influential Indonesian dancer / choreographer of his generation, became fascinated by both the local community and the marine life found in and around Jailolo, and drew inspiration from his experience there to develop this new creation. He calls it a performance of ‘silent tourism’. Compelling rhythms leading a menacing soundtrack are alternated with expressive solos: as beautiful and as rich as coral life itself.

APOLLON MUSAGÈTE N Florentina Holzinger creëerde de afgelopen jaren een aantal explosieve en brutale performances waarbij ze inspiratie putte uit kickboks, circus, striptease of yoga. Met Apollon Musagète kiest ze voor een hedendaagse herwerking van Balanchines neoklassieke ballet, maar met een uitsluitend vrouwelijke cast. Het verhaal draait rond Apollo, de Griekse god van de muziek, die bezoek krijgt van drie muzes: Terpsichore (dans en het lied), Polyhymni (mimespel) en Calliope (poëzie).

Dit ‘post-barok’ balletstuk is onlosmakelijk verbonden met Florentina Holzingers rol als vrouw en doorprikt de normen van de huidige lichaamscultus. De perfecte vrouw – wat wil ze? En wat wil het publiek van een vrouw?

Apollon Musagète neemt de esthetiek van het circus over en past die toe op de ‘hoge kunst’. In de bizarre fantasie die zo ontstaat worden we onvermijdelijk op ons eigen kijkgedrag gewezen.

E In recent years Florentina Holzinger has created a number of bold and explosive performances in which she draws inspiration from kickboxing, the circus, striptease, and yoga. For Apollon Musagète she’s making contemporary reworking of Balanchine’s neoclassical ballet, but with an explicitly female cast. The story revolves around Apollo, the Greek god of music, who is visited by three muses: Terpsichore (dance and song), Polyhymnia (mime) and Calliope (poetry).

This ‘post-baroque’ ballet is inseparable from Florentina Holzinger’s role as a woman and challenges our current norms about body cultus. The perfect woman – what does she want? And what does society expect from a woman? Apollon Musagète takes the aesthetics of circus and applies it to ‘high art’. In the bizarre fantasy that unravels we are inescapably confronted with our own viewing habits.

His work mutates continuously and offers different experiences through its varying contexts, from showroom to club. We see a figure enacting feelings of disorientation, instability, fear and his struggles with love and relationships. BALABALA N Eko Supriyanto is een van de meest invloedrijke danser / choreografen uit Indonesië. Met zijn achtergrond in Javanese hofdansen en Indonesische martial arts, combineert hij in zijn voorstellingen feilloos traditionele bewegingen met hedendaagse dans. Zijn werk is te zien op festivals in zowel Azië, Europa als Amerika. Voor Balabala kiest hij vijf expressieve danseressen uit de Molukken. Met trage, ritmische bewegingspatronen verbeelden ze haarscherp de notie ‘kracht’. Elk trachten ze op hun manier een ruimte af te bakenen die plaats biedt aan vrouwen en waar ‘potentie’ en ‘creatie’ centraal staan. Geïnspireerd door de negen richtingen van de pencak silat (martial arts) filosofie, geven de danseressen uiting aan de verschillende rollen van de vrouw in Indonesië. Een straffe voorstelling met straffe vrouwelijke (dans)kracht.

E Eko Supriyanto is one of the most influential dancers /­ choreographer from Indonesia. With his background in Javanese court dances and Indonesian martial arts, his performances are a flawless blend of traditional and contemporary dance movements. His work has been shown in festivals across Asia, Europe and America. For Balabala he is working with five expressive dancers from Maluku.

With slow, rhythmic movement patterns they create a piercing depiction of strength. They each strive to carve a space for women in which potential and creation are central. Inspired by the nine directions of the Pencak Silat (martial arts) philosophy, the dancers express the different roles of women in Indonesia. N In 2008 creëerden Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker en Alain Franco Zeitung. In 2017 herwerken ze die creatie tot een nieuwe voorstelling: Zeitigung. In Zeitung haakte het choreografisch en muzikaal materiaal in op vragen rond compositie, improvisatie en tijdsbeleving. Het resultaat was een voorstelling op muziek van Bach, Webern en Schönberg – die het belang van de negentiende eeuw benadrukte door hem over te slaan. Zeitigung zal die bronnen herzien en herinterpreteren. Daarbij nodigen De Keersmaeker en Franco danser en choreograaf Louis Nam Le Van Ho, recent afgestudeerd aan P.A.R.T.S., uit om een tweede deel te maken.

E In 2008 Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Alain Franco produced the work Zeitung. In 2017 they are reworking this piece into a new performance entitled Zeitigung. In Zeitung the choreographic and musical material raised questions about composition, improvisation and the perception of time. The result was a performance with the music of Bach, Webern and Schönberg – emphasising the importance of the nineteenth century by omitting it completely. Zeitigung will review these sources and reinterpret them again. For this occasion De Keersmaeker and Franco have invited dancer and choreographer Louis Nam Le Van Ho, who recently graduated from P.A.R.T.S., to collaborate in the creation of this second version.

N In 1928 schreef de Braziliaanse kunstenaar Oswald de Andrade zijn ‘kannibalistisch’ manifest, waarin hij ijvert om een koloniserende cultuur niet te verwerpen maar ze op te eten, te verteren en uit te scheiden in een andere vorm. Europa heeft altijd de rol van kolonisator gespeeld.

Maar wat kunnen we in het Westen als ‘invasief’ beschouwen in onze publieke ruimte?

Michiel Vandevelde probeert in zijn voorstellingen een nieuwe cultuur te creëren vanuit alomtegenwoordige videoclips en reclamefilmpjes. Daartegenover plaatst hij contrasterende materialen, zoals filosofische teksten. In Andrade blijft alleen de dans over, in zijn abstracte vorm, en wordt ze uitgepuurd tot een intieme maar ook explosieve solo. Een totale remix van alle dans en muziek uit zijn vorige voorstellingen als synthese van een zoektocht naar een cultuur die nog ontdekt moet worden.

E In 1928 the Brazilian artist and theorist Oswald de Andrade wrote his famous Manifesto Antropófago. This manifesto advocates to not reject the culture of those that colonised Brazil, but rather to eat this culture, digest it and shit it out in a different version. Europe has always been colonizing. Yet, Vandevelde asks: what could we, as citizens, consider invasive in the western public space?

Through different performances Vandevelde has been cannibalizing dance materials from popular videoclips. He places this vocabulary in juxtaposition with appropriated texts.In the solo Andrade only the cannibalized dance remains. The vocabulary is explored in its abstraction.

The duet will be a synthesis of the dance materials and the different music used in previous performances. A total remix in order to arrive at an illogic, bizarre, unnameable dance belonging to a culture yet to be discovered.

RULE OF THREE N RULE OF THREE houdt het midden tussen een concert en een verhalenbundel. De vibe van een nachtclub wordt verweven met het gevoel van verdwalen in de bladzijden van een boek. Verstilling en explosie wisselen elkaar af, precisie staat naast meditatie, rede naast emotie. Soms zwellen rtime, licht en beweging aan, soms worden ze ontmanteld. De voorstelling staat bol van de tegenstellingen, net als onze tijd. Voor het eerst werkt Jan Martens met live muziek. De muziek van de Amerikaanse producer en drummer NAH draagt sporen van punk, noise en avant jazz overgoten met rusteloze hip hop.

De laatste jaren heeft de Belgische Jan Martens een stevig oeuvre opgebouwd waarmee hij regelmatig in de prijzen valt maar waarmee hij het ook schopte tot publiekslieveling.

E RULE OF THREE is a mix between a concert and a collection of short stories. The atmosphere of a nightclub is interwoven with a sense of getting lost between the pages of a book. Stillness and outbursts alternate, precision goes alongside meditation, reason alongside emotion. The rhythms, light and movement simultaneously swell, or at other times are dismantled. The show is full of contradictions, just as our times. For the first time Jan Martens is working with live music. The music of the American producer and drummer NAH bears traces of punk, noise and avant-garde jazz topped with restless hip-hop. In recent years, the Belgian Jan Martens has built up a solid body of work, with which he’s regularly awarded prizes as well as becoming a favourite among audiences.

DANÇA DOENTE N Wat kan dans nog betekenen voor lichamen die moe en breekbaar zijn? De Braziliaanse choreograaf Marcelo Evelin liet zich opmerken met erg fysieke en rauwe dansperformances die de donkere krachten van het leven bloot leggen en zo heel verwant zijn aan rituelen. Na meer dan dertig jaar in de dans groeide echter ook een bezorgdheid over het fysieke aftakelen van het lichaam. Dança Doente (‘Zieke Dans’) toont een lichaam dat geïnfecteerd is door de wereld en dat leeggezogen wordt door externe krachten. Evelin vond inspiratie bij de dansen en de geschriften van Hijikata Tatsumi, de pionier van de Japanse Butoh. Het stuk organiseert zichzelf als een ‘gedanste pathologie’ en toont lichamen die uit zichzelf treden. Een virale en besmettelijke dans als een voorbode van een gewisse dood maar dan enkel om het leven in al zijn kracht te bevestigen.

E What might dance mean today? Brazilian choreographer Marcelo Evelin lived and worked between Amsterdam and Teresina (Brazil) for over 30 years and distinguished himself with highly physical, transgressive dance performances that are closely related to rituals.

Dança Doente (‘Sick Dance’) approaches dance as pathos, as a symptom of a body infected by a world gone mad and dominated by forces that drain and dismiss it. Marcelo Evelin has drawn inspiration from the dances and writings of Hijikata Tatsumi, the pioneer of Japanese Butoh in the 60s. The piece arranges itself as a ‘danced pathology’ with bodies moving on their own accord. A viral and contagious dance as a prelude to certain death, only to reaffirm life in all its force.

WHITE ON WHITE N White on White neemt het fenomeen Grace Jones onder de loep. Als geen ander kon Grace Jones zich nieuwe imago’s aanmeten en daarin speelde haar grafisch vormgever Jean Paul Goude een sleutelrol. Hij plunderde de kunstgeschiedenis, manipuleerde lichaamsbeelden en creëerde zo nieuwe mythologieën. Vandaag spreken we van ‘image building’. Precies in hun gemeenschappelijke fascinatie voor de maakbaarheid van het personage, vonden de Belgische choreograaf Marc Vanrunxt en de Turkse Bahar Temiz elkaar. Vanrunxt gaat in deze solo namelijk op zoek naar nieuwe manieren om een lichaam te ensceneren: de mens als deel man, vrouw, sfinx, dier, cyborg, alien.

Beeldend kunstenares Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven en modeontwerper Jean Paul Lespagnard vervolledigen het team. Het samenbrengen van deze expressieve en extraverte kunstenaars belooft vuurwerk.

E White on White explores the phenomenon of Grace Jones. Like no other Grace Jones takes on new images, her graphic designer Jean-Paul Goude plays a key role in this. Plundering art history, he manipulates images of the body, thus creating new mythologies. Today we speak of ‘image building’.

The two choreographers, Belgian Marc Vanrunxt and Turkish Bahar Temiz, found one another through their shared fascination with the malleability of the character.

In this performance Vanrunxt goes in search of ways to stage a body: the body as part man, part woman, sphinx, animal, cyborg, alien … Visual artist Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven and fashion designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard complete the team. The combination of these expressive and extroverted artists promises fireworks!

KHAN — CUNNINGHAM — FORSYTHE N Speciaal voor Leuven stelt Ballet Vlaanderen een mixed bill samen met iconische stukken uit de recente dansgeschiedenis. Merce Cunningham creëerde Pond Way nadat hij een tentoonstelling zag van Roy Lichtenstein met enkele van zijn typische in rasterpunten opgebouwde natuurstudies. In een meditatieve choreografie evoceert een groep dansers rimpelingen op het water. Approximate Sonata is een choreografie van William Forsythe gecreëerd op een sonate van Beethoven maar uitgevoerd op een gefragmenteerde compositie van Thom Willems. Daardoor ontstaat een spanningsveld tussen dans en muziek waarbij de dansers zich, in Forsythes kenmerkende neoklassieke stijl tot extremen drijven. De Engels-Bengaalse choreograaf Akram Khan brengt met Kaash, het Hindu voor ‘als’, een eigen visie op Shiva. Zijn unieke dansstijl is geworteld in de Indiase dansstijl kathak. De wereldberoemde kunstenaar Anish Kapoor vertaalt dit transcendente thema naar een poëtische sceno­grafie.

E Especially for Leuven, Ballet of Flanders presents a mixed bill with iconic pieces from recent dance history.

Merce Cunningham created Pond Way after seeing an exhibition of Roy Lichtenstein’s characteristic dot grids of natural landscapes. Through a meditative choreography a group of dancers evoke an image of ripples across water. Approximate Sonata is choreographed by William Forsythe created for a Beethoven sonata but performed to a fragmented composition by Thom Willems. This creates a tension between dance and music in which the dancers, in Forsythe’s distinctive neoclassical style, drive themselves to extremes. In Kaash, the Hindi word for ‘if only’, the British-Bengali choreographer Akram Khan depicts a vision inspired by Shiva. His unique dance style is rooted in Indian Kathak dance. The world famous artist Anish Kapoor translates this transcendent theme into poetic scenography.

INVISIBLE [8+] N In 2014 ontmoeten Joke Laureyns en Kwint Manshoven de Italiaanse oorlogsreporter Franco Fagetti. Twee jaar later spreken ze de bewoners van het Portugese dorpje Luz, dat onder water verdween na de bouw van een stuwdam.

Hoewel hun situaties erg verschillen, drukken beide getuigenissen het verlangen uit om onzichtbaar te zijn. Invisible wordt een dansvoorstelling over loutering. En over hoe het leven toch steeds weer de bovenhand neemt, hoe dan ook.

Omarmd door niets dan het eigen lichaam, waarbinnen het ruisen van het bloed, het ademhalen, de hartslag onophoudelijk herinnert aan wat leven is. Zo schoon dat het pijn doet. Zoals wel vaker in het werk van kabinet k spreekt de voorstelling tot een volwassen publiek, maar kan ook een kind zijn eigen weg vinden, als in een donker sprookje.

E In 2014 Joke Laureyns and Kwint Manshoven met the Italian war reporter Franco Fagetti. Two years later, they spoke with the inhabitants of the Portuguese village of Luz, which disappeared under water after the construction of a dam. Although their situations are very different, both testimonies express the desire to be invisible. Invisible is a dance performance about catharsis. And about how, no matter what, life always has the upper hand. Embraced by nothing but one’s own body, within which the rush of blood, breath, and heartbeats continuously remind us of what life is. So beautiful, it hurts.

N Onder de vleugels van het gezelschap van Wim Vandekeybus creëerde Seppe Baeyens in 2015 zijn eerste grootschalige dansvoorstelling Tornar. In zijn nieuwe voorstelling INVITED formuleert Baeyens een artistiek antwoord op de vraag hoe het publiek mee de choreografie van een voorstelling kan schrijven. Met dans als gemeenschappelijke taal wil hij naar een alternatieve manier van samenleven zoeken en zo een gemeenschap stichten met cast en publiek. Net zoals in het meermaals gelauwerde Tornar, stelt hij ook nu een diverse en intergenerationele groep performers samen die de samenleving weerspiegelt. Ook het publiek zal een belangrijke rol innemen. De scenografie verkleint de afstand tussen spelers en publiek door hen samen deel uit te laten maken van één duidelijke (democratische) vorm.

E Under the wing of the company of Wim Vandekeybus, in 2015 Seppe Baeyens developed his first major dance performance Tornar. In his new piece INVITED Baeyens formulates an artistic answer to the question of how an audience can be involved in developing the choreography of a performance. With dance as a common language he seeks an alternative way of living through creating a community between cast and audience. Just as in his highly acclaimed Tornar, once again he brings together a diverse and intergenerational group of performers that reflect society. The audience also play an important role.

The scenography minimizes the distance between the performers and the audience by making them a part of one clear (democratic) form.

TALOS N Welke choreografie ontstaat er in de nabijheid van grenzen? Talos is een mythische bronzen reus die vanop het eiland Kreta Europa moest beschermen tegen indringers. Maar Talos was ook een door de EU gesubsidieerd onderzoeksproject dat robots ontwikkelde om Europa’s landsgrenzen te bewaken. Terwijl migranten en asielzoekers blijven toestromen, zoekt de EU naar nieuwe strategieën om grenzen af te sluiten en te controleren. Na de aangrijpende solo Archive met documentaire materiaal uit de bezette gebieden, speculeert Arkadi Zaides in TALOS samen met een interdisciplinair team van choreografen, robotica-experten en videomakers over scenario’s waarbij mensen en autonome grens-technologieën tegenover elkaar staan. Wat zijn de ethische, politieke en menselijke gevolgen van protocollen die vandaag ondenkbaar lijken?

E What kind of choreography arises in the proximity of borders? Talos is a mythical bronze giant whose role was to protect Europa (mother of King Minos) in Crete from pirates and invaders. But Talos was also a research project funded by the EU to develop robots in order to guard Europe’s borders. While migrants and asylum seekers continue to flow, the EU is looking for new strategies to control and close its borders. For the gripping solo Archive, Arcadi Zaides used documentary material from the occupied territories. In TALOS he joins forces with an interdisciplinary team of choreographers, robotics experts and video makers to speculate about scenarios where people and autonomous border technologies are face to face.

What are the ethical, political and human consequences of protocols that seem still not yet possible today?

KALAKUTA REPUBLIK N Welke gebeurtenissen inspireren een bevolking om zich te verenigen en naar een alternatief te zoeken? Hoe komt het dat een volk op zoek gaat naar charismatische leiders?

Hoe groot is de macht die deze personen hebben? Hoeveel vrijheid is er te vinden binnen een beweging?

De Burkinees Serge Aimé Coulibaly scheerde hoge toppen als danser bij Alain Platel. Nu maakt hij zijn eigen dansproducties die geworteld zijn in de Afrikaanse cultuur.

Door de expressieve en geëngageerde dans reizen zijn voorstellingen van continent tot continent. Na Nuit blanche à Ouagadougou, een voorstelling die oproept tot een opstand in een Afrikaans land, zet Coulibaly zijn discours in Kalakuta Republik verder over de absolute noodzaak om de wereld van vandaag te laten evolueren. De muziek en het leven van de Nigeriaanse muzikant en politiek activist Fela Kuti vormen de basis van Kalakuta Republik.

N De New Yorkse topchoreograaf Trajal Harrell brengt Antigone Sr., een onderdeel van de reeks Twenty looks or Paris is burning at the Judson Church waarmee hij wereldwijd furore maakt. New York, begin jaren 60. In Greenwich Village legt een groep dansers en choreografen – Lucinda Childs, Steve Paxton … – de basis voor de postmoderne dans. Ze zijn blank, middle class, behoren tot de artistieke elite, en introduceren alledaagse, ‘authentieke’ bewegingen in de danstaal. Tegelijkertijd ontstaat, in de ‘ballrooms’ van Harlem, de voguing dansstijl, beoefend door AfroAmerikanen, Latino’s, gays en transseksuelen. In deze uitbundige voorstelling onderzoekt Harrell, via het verhaal van Antigone, de relatie tussen het klassieke Griekse theater (waar mannen zowel mannen- als vrouwenrollen speelden) en de ‘voguing scene’.

N De huidige neokapitalistische samenleving wordt gedomineerd door een beeldcultuur die hypergeseksualiseerd is en volledig doordrongen is van pornografie.

Promofolders, tv-spots voor make-up, affiches in het straatbeeld … allemaal hanteren ze technieken uit de pornoindustrie. Vertrekkend vanuit die vaststelling toont Mette Ingvartsen een collectie erotisch en affectief materiaal. Het gaat haar niet zozeer om expliciete seks, maar ze confronteert ons met enkele karakteristieken van pornografie: uitdrukkingen van wreedheden, klinische precisie, geweld en pijn, plezier, opwinding en sensatie.

Door het vermengen van fysieke acties met narratieve beschrijvingen ontstaat er een speculatieve choreografie die bij de toeschouwer zowel de verbeelding als de intense lichamelijke sensaties aan het werk zet.

21 Pornographies is het derde deel van Mette Ingvartsens trilogie over seksualiteit waarin ze de werking van pornografie onder de loep neemt.

E The current neo-capitalist society is dominated by a visual culture that is hyper-sexualised and steeped in pornography. Promotion pamphlets, TV advertisements for makeup, posters in the streets … all use techniques from the pornography industry. Taking this as her starting point Mette Ingvartsen displays a collection of erotic and evocative material. It’s not about explicit sex, instead she confronts us with some characteristics of pornography: expressions of brutality, clinical precision, violence and pain, pleasure, excitement and thrills. By blending physical actions with narrative descriptions a speculative choreography is brought about that sets both the imagination and intense physical sensations of the viewer to work.

21 Pornographies is the third part of this trilogy on sexuality, in which Mette Ingvartsen examines the effects of pornography.

E Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suites are considered a milestone in Western music history. Their ingenious architecture, dancing rhythms and timeless beauty continue to speak to us today. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s affinity with Bach is apparent in numerous previous performances. She continues to pursue a choreographic scripture that captures the essence of Bach’s musical language. During this production the six suites, performed by the world-renowned cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, are explored, challenged, and danced through a choreography for three male and two female dancers, including De Keersmaeker herself. This riveting symbiosis of music and dance reveals both the individual character of each suite and their interconnections in the totality of the cycle.

N Hear is een auditieve choreografie die zich ontvouwt rond en tussen de toeschouwers. Choreograaf Benjamin Vandewalle en componist Yoann Durant ontwikkelen een menselijke soundscape die de fysieke kracht van geluid verkent. Voor elke editie van Hear werken de makers samen met een koor van lokale vrijwilligers. Zo krijgt elke voorstelling een unieke stem.

Benjamin en Yoann verdiepen zich in geluid, maar gaan verder dan de bron, de ontvanger en de esthetiek.

Hear onderzoekt geluid als materie – het zijn, het worden, het bestaan en de visuele realiteit van geluid an sich. Hear draait niet rond fysicaliteit, maar wel rond lichamen die hun grenzen testen, zich verplaatsen en zich uitzetten naar andere lichamen. Je bent hier in Hear en daar en ginds.

E Hear is an auditive choreography that unfolds around and in between the audience. Choreographer Benjamin Vandewalle and composer Yoann Durant are developing a human soundscape that explores the physical power of sound. For every edition of Hear, they work with a choir of local volunteers. This way, every performance has a unique voice.

Benjamin and Yoann are concernd with sound but go beyond its emitter, receptor and aesthetics. The matter of sound – the being, the becoming, the existence and the visual reality of sound as such. Hear doesn’t emphasize your physical body, yet its limits are tested, shifting and expanding to other bodies. You are here in Hear. And over there. And there. Sound is everywhere and all the time.

SNAP XL [12+] N Een vonk. Een energiebom. Een trance. Met SNAP XL maakt de jonge choreografe Talitha De Decker een ongegeneerd positieve dansproductie. Daarin boort ze recht naar de kern van haar eigen dansplezier. Combinaties van eenvoudige discobewegingen vloeien samen tot hypnotiserende structuren die ontvlammen op de vette beats van 90’s-muziek. Op de dansvloer staan 14 krachtige jongeren die de 90’s alleen maar kennen van de recente Pokémonrevival.

In 2014 maakte Talitha haar afstudeervoorstelling SNAP, een kort duet voor twee professionele dansers. Ze vertrok van de vraag: hoe kan je toegankelijke dans brengen zonder commercieel te worden? Voor SNAP XL werkt ze die vraag verder uit met een groep van 14 dansers.

Combinations of simple disco movements merge into hypnotic structures that ignite upon the fat beats of music from the 90s. On the dance floor are 14 powerful youths – who only know the 90s from the recent Pokémon revival.

Talitha made her graduation performance SNAP in 2014, a short duet for two professional dancers. Her point of departure was the question: how can dance be made accessible without becoming commercial? For SNAP XL she continues further with this question with a group of 14 dancers.

N Faits et gestes behandelt verschillende functies van beweging. De dansers focussen op de veelzijdige manieren waarop gebaren beweging suggereren: het voorbereiden van een sprong of een pirouette, het reiken naar een imaginaire tegenspeler, het aanwijzen, het selecteren of overdragen van bewegingen. De bewegingen staan niet op zichzelf, maar verwijzen naar iets daarbuiten. Wat afwezig is, ontstaat in het hoofd van de kijker … die vervolledigt als het ware de dansfrase. Noé Soulier vond parallellen in de barokke composities van Johan Jakob Froberger en Johann Sebastian Bach, die live worden uitgevoerd. Het zijn grafredes met een expliciete retorische kracht. Net zoals de bewegingen van de dansers hebben de muzikale figuren geen afgelijnde betekenis, maar toch roepen ze emoties op. Noé Soulier weet als geen ander het klassieke dansvocabularium een hedendaagse invulling te geven.

E Faits et gestes explores the different status of movement. The dancers zoom in on the multiple ways in which gestures suggest movement: the build up to a jump or a pirouette, reaching for an imaginary opponent, identifying, selecting or transmitting movements. The movements are not isolated, but refer to something beyond. What’s absent forms itself in the mind of the viewer … which completes the dance phrase, as it were. Noé Soulier found parallels in the baroque compositions of Johan Jakob Froberger, performed live during the piece. These funeral orations have explicit rhetorical power. Just as the movements of the dancers, the musical figures do not delineate meaning but instead evoke emotions.

N Liz Kinoshita is geïnspireerd door de relatie tussen noodzaak en verspilling, en hoe die fysiek, mentaal en emotioneel op ons weegt. Wat doet het met ons gemoed, om ons bezig te houden met nadenken over afval of verspilling?

In essentie hebben dansers en performers niet meer nodig dan hun lichaam, hun stem, hun ervaring, praktijk en kennis om te doen wat ze doen. Samen met Bryana Fritz, Justin Kennedy en Clinton Stringer gaat Liz Kinoshita op zoek naar die essentie. Repetitieve mantra’s ritmeren de voorstelling. Via improvisatie en snelle wissels benadrukt Liz Kinoshita de veerkracht die we allemaal hebben: om ons van de ene op de andere seconde te ontdoen van de ballast in ons leven.

E Liz Kinoshita draws inspiration from the ties between necessity and waste, and how such issues weigh on us physically, mentally and emotionally. How is our disposition affected when we engage in thinking about refuse or covert wastefulness?

In essence, dancers and performers need nothing more than their bodies, their voices, their experience, knowledge and practice in order to do what they do. In collaboration with Bryana Fritz, Justin Kennedy and Clinton Stringer, Liz Kinoshita goes in search of this essence. Repetitive mantras set the performance’s rhythm. Through improvisation and rapid changes Liz Kinoshita emphasises the resilience found in us all: to adapt from one moment to the next, and rid ourselves of life’s baggage.

N The moon is the moon is the moon is een danstrio dat je kijkervaring verdiept. Je wordt niet meteen overdonderd door de dans zelf maar je maakt eerst kennis met de verschillende bouwstenen van het trio. De vele lagen van de choreografie worden als het ware blootgelegd. Vergelijk het met de talloze schetsen en études die schilders maken voor ze aan een schilderij beginnen. Deze voorstelling maakt een verhaal met en vraagt aandacht voor de ‘schetsen’ als bouwstenen. De drie dansers en de live muziek van Gerrit Valckenaers nodigen je uit om in de dans af te dalen en ze dieper te beleven. De dansers bouwen ook hun choreografie op om hun bewegingen daarna uit te wissen. Wat overblijft is de gemeenschappelijke ervaring van dansers en publiek.

E The moon is the moon is the moon is a dance trio that deepens your experience of dance. Rather than being immediately bombarded with virtuosity you are instead first introduced to the different building blocks of the trio. The many layers of choreography are slowly peeled away, so to speak. Comparable to the countless notes and sketches painters make before embarking on a painting.

This performance creates a story with, and draws attention to, the ‘sketch’ as a building block. The three dancers and composer Gerrit Valckenaers invite you to delve into dance and deepen your experience. The dancers meticulously build upon their choreography, only to erase their movements again. What remains is the collective experience of the dancers and the audience.

N Juni 1968. Op het festival d’Avignon gaat de befaamde New Yorkse acteursgroep The Living Theatre in première met Paradise now. De spelers willen het publiek in een staat van paraatheid brengen – klaar voor actie in de wereld buiten het theater. De grondslag van hun revolutie is niet alleen politiek maar ook spiritueel. Ze laten zich inspireren door de ‘chakras’, het chassidisme en de kabbala. Centraal staat de verhouding tussen het collectieve en het individu.

50 jaar later onderzoekt Michiel Vandevelde met een nieuwe generatie jonge mensen wat er overblijft van de erfenis van mei ’68. De wereld is compleet veranderd, maar veel idealen van de toenmalige hippiegeneratie zijn nu hippe praktijken geworden. Grote bedrijven als Google, Apple en Spotify promoten samenwerking, zelforganisatie en decentralisatie. Maar wat betekent het collectieve als artistiek en politiek statement nog?

E June 1968. At the festival d’Avignon, the famous New York actor’s group The Living Theatre attend the premiere of Paradise Now. The actors want to draw the audience into a state of readiness – ready for action in the world outside the theatre. The basis of their revolution is not only political but spiritual. They are inspired by the ‘chakras’, Hasidism and Kabbalah. The relationship between the collective and the individual is key.

Fifty years later, in collaboration with a new generation of young people, Michiel Vandevelde examines what remains of this legacy from May ’68. The world has changed completely, but many ideals from the former hippie generation have now become fashionable practice. Large companies like Google, Apple and Spotify promote collaboration, self-organisation and decentralisation. But what does the collective mean nowadays as an artistic and political statement?

7 DIALOGUES N Het kersverse DANCE ON ENSEMBLE nodigt internationaal gerenommeerde choreografen uit om aan de slag te gaan met de ervaring, charisma en dramatische kracht van 40+ dansers. In STUK brengt het ensemble een tweeluik.

Een ‘ingewikkeld, haast barok werk’, zo omschrijft William Forsythe zijn choreografie voor Jill Johnson en Christopher Roman, twee voormalige Forsythedansers die elkaar door en door kennen. Hun onwaarschijnlijke gevoeligheid en gedeeld coördinatievermogen is de inzet voor zijn nieuw duet Catalogue (First Edition) Voor 7 Dialogues nodigde de componist Matteo Fargion zes choreografen en theatermakers uit om een solo te creëren op basis van een uitgepuurde score van Schuberts Erlkönig. Het resultaat is een eclectische reeks solo’s waarin elke individuele danser tot zijn recht komt. De live pianobegeleiding van Matteo Fargion vormt de zevende stem.

E The brand new DANCE ON ENSEMBLE invites internationally renowned choreographers to get to grips with the experience, charisma and dramatic power of top dancers from the past. At STUK the ensemble of 40+ dancers present a diptych.

A ‘complicated, harsh baroque work,’ is William Forsythe’s description of his choreography for the former Forsythe dancers and close collaborators Jill Johnson and Christopher Roman. Their incredible sensitivity and combined coordination is the drive behind his new duet Catalogue (First Edition).

For 7 Dialogues the composer Matteo Fargion invited six choreographers and theatre-makers to create a solo based on a stripped-down score from Schubert’s Erlkönig.

The result is an eclectic series of solos in which each individual dancer comes into their own. Matteo Fargion’s live piano accompaniment forms the seventh voice.

THE PALM OF YOUR HAND #2 N In 2015 ging Vera Tussing in première in STUK met The palm of your hand. Het werd een signatuurwerk waarbij ze op ontwapende wijze het publiek aan het dansen zette met aanraking als leidraad. Op uitnodiging van The Human Body Project herwerkt ze de voorstelling voor blinden en gedeeltelijk zienden. Hoe kan de voorstelling communiceren als we het visuele aspect weglaten? In zekere zin komt ze zo tot de essentie van wat al in het origineel zat vervat.

Dit is een dans van lichamelijk contact. Het werk ontstaat in de actieve, tactiele en geëngageerde onderhandeling tussen performer en publiek – in hun stilzwijgende overeenstemming en wederzijds begrip. Opgesteld in een ellips vormt het publiek zelf de grens van de theatrale ruimte. Het is een reis die de dansers en het publiek samen ontdekken en vormgeven.

E In 2015 Vera Tussing premiered at STUK with The palm of your hand. It became a signature work whereby, in a disarming manner and with ‘touch’ as a guide, she had audiences up on their feet dancing. Upon the invitation of the Human Body Project she reworked this performance for the blind and partially sighted. In which ways can a performance still communicate when we eliminate the visual aspect? In many ways, she hereby returns to the essence embodied in the original version.

This is a dance of physical contact. The work manifests in active, tactile and engaged negotiations between performers and the audience – in their tacit agreement and mutual understanding. Stood in an ellipse form, the audience itself creates the parameters of the theatrical space. It’s a journey the dancers and the audience shape and discover together.

N Na het theatrale dansstuk Mockumentary of a Contemporary Saviour (2017) is Wim Vandekeybus klaar om om de grens tussen podium en toeschouwers definitief te doorbreken. Een host en zijn gevolg nemen het publiek mee naar het cabaret der vragen waarbij Go Figure Out Yourself als enig voorlopig mogelijke antwoord geldt. Het tempo ligt hoog. Interactie is onvermijdelijk. Niet langer wordt er gespeeld vóór maar veeleer met het publiek dat op zijn beurt het landschap vormt voor deze radicale reis.

Go Figure Out Yourself is een totaalexpeditie die balanceert tussen verschillende genres van dans tot theater en circus. Daarmee wil Vandekeybus een voorstelling maken die eigenlijk geen voorstelling is of toch niet wil zijn.

E After the theatrical dance piece Mockumentary of a Contemporary Saviour (2017), Wim Vandekeybus is now ready to break the boundary between the stage and spectator once and for all. A host and his entourage lead the audience to the cabaret of questions whereby, for the time being, Go Figure Out Yourself appears to be the only possible answer. The pace is set high. Interaction is inevitable. The performers are no longer playing for but rather with the audience, which in turn form the scenery for this radical journey.

Go Figure Out Yourself is an expedition balancing between different genres from dance to theatre and circus.

Herewith Vandekeybus aims to create a performance that in fact isn’t a performance or doesn’t want to be one.

N Liefde, schoonheid, poëzie en David Bowie … daar draait het om in EVOL. De titel is een anagram van LOVE en een afkorting van ‘evolution’. EVOL is geïnspireerd door Rainer Maria Rilke’s Duino Elegies. Zonder woorden roepen de dansers de poëzie in zijn puurste vorm op, waarbij ze complexe, technische vormen combineren met vrije bewegingen. Nummers uit David Bowies vroege werken vormen een energieke, poppy soundtrack met een lyrische ondertoon. De mystiek en romantiek van Rilkes engelen en beesten wordt weerspiegeld in Bowies surrealisme. Maar het element van herkenning speelt ook mee: Bowies muziek, door iedereen gekend en geliefd, verbindt de persoonlijke herinneringen van de toeschouwers met de verhalen die de dansers op het podium vertellen.

Zonder ooit te illustreren brengt Claire Croizé al deze invloeden samen in een sterke dansuitvoering.

E Love, beauty, poetry and David Bowie are at the heart of EVOL. The title is an anagram of LOVE and an abbreviation of ‘evolution’. EVOL is inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s Duino Elegies. Without words the dancers evoke poetry in its purest form, whereby they combine complex, technical shapes with free movements. Songs from David Bowie’s early works form the energetic, poppy soundtrack with lyrical undertones. The mystique and romance of Rilke’s angels and animals are reflected in Bowie’s surrealism. Yet familiarity and recognition also play a key role: Bowie’s music, known and loved by all, connects the personal memories of the audience to the stories told by the dancers on stage. Without being illustrative Claire Croizé merges these influences together into a powerful dance performance.

E STUK is a House for Dance in which a vibrant community continues to grow, where both the public and experts are mutually enriched through their shared experience of viewing and practicing dance. With a range of ways in which audiences of all ages can participate and engage. Where embodied knowledge is shared and reflection on the practice of dance is routine.

In this second part of the brochure we highlight the various endeavours made by STUK to connect a range of audiences through contemporary dance, and provide an overview of the accompanying activities we organise as a dance house.

Het aanbod omvat laagdrempelige, inleidende workshops waarin je je kan verdiepen in het materiaal van de voorstelling, masterclasses voor gevorderde dansers waarin specifieke thema’s aan bod komen en participatieve workshops die tot deelname aan een voorstelling leiden.

Een nagesprek is de ideale gelegenheid om kunstenaars informeel te ontmoeten en inzicht te krijgen in hun inspiratie en hun werk. Het gesprek wordt telkens gefaciliteerd door een moderator die waar nodig het geheel in perspectief plaatst.

E Through our programme of introductory talks you are provided with the necessary keys for enriching your perspective and enjoyment of the performances. Our programme of discussions taking place after the performances are an ideal opportunity to meet the artists in an informal setting and gain insight into their work and what inspires them. Hosting each discussion is a moderator who, where necessary, helps draw perspective by bringing together the various points. All the information about the introductory talks and discussion programmes are announced on the webpage of each respective performance.

E WISPER have years of experience organising creative courses for adults, using their particularly unique methods and with a core focus on the active learning and development of each participant. All the contemporary dance courses from WISPER Leuven take place at STUK. Course participants can go to any of the STUK dance performances at a reduced price.

N Met Theory of Contemporary Dance slaan STUK en KU Leuven de handen in elkaar om een veelzijdige lessenreeks aan te bieden die studenten en een breder publiek introduceren in de theorievorming rond en de praktijk van de hedendaagse dans. De studenten kunnen de theoretische inzichten aftoetsen aan de praktijk via een selectie voorstellingen in STUK. Daarnaast staan er gastlessen, public talks met choreografen en een symposium op het programma.

De lessen starten vanaf het tweede semester. Een aantal colleges vindt plaats in STUK en is publiek toegankelijk (voertaal Engels).

E With Theory of Contemporary Dance STUK and KU Leuven join forces to deliver a diverse series of classes introducing students and the wider public to contemporary dance practice and theory. The students will have the opportunity to put their newly acquired theoretical knowledge into practice while attending a selection of performances at STUK. In addition the programme comprises a series of guest lectures, several public talks with choreographers and a symposium.

The classes will start in the second semester. A number of lectures are hosted by STUK and open to the public (lectures are given in English). For more information and updates keep an eye on the website.

WHAT? There will be three rehearsals with exercises and instructions to learn the basic principles of Hear. You will then perform four shows in front of an audience – they will not be able to see anything! You will collaborate intensively with Benjamin, Yoann, and the other volunteers.

Rediscover your body and your voice!

WHO? Basic physical fitness, mobility, and minimal voice control are the only requirements. You certainly don’t need to be a trained dancer or singer! Simple things like tiptoeing or holding a certain tone are required. It is important that you are available to attend all the rehearsals and performances.

E Choreographer Benjamin Vandewalle and composer Yoann Durant are looking for volunteers for the performance Hear (see p. 72) in collaboration with Kaaitheater. Together, you will form a choir and give the blindfolded audience an exceptional experience. With multiple voices, you will create a moving body of sound!

N Ook achter de schermen is er in STUK heel wat in beweging. De residentiewerking is misschien het minst zichtbaar voor de bezoeker, maar het is wel het kloppend hart van ons danshuis. Dagelijks zijn er binnen- en buitenlandse kunstenaars aan het werk in de Ateliers, de Studio, de Labozaal en de Soetezaal. Dat STUK een stimulerende werkplek is, is intussen een publiek geheim: professionele studio’s, een technisch en productioneel team dat meedenkt met de kunstenaar, appartementen op een boogscheut van STUK en een artiestenkeuken als centrale ontmoetingsplek.

Sommige kunstenaars werken aan een onderzoek, anderen staan al verder in hun proces of zitten in de laatste rechte lijn naar een première. Een brede groep artiesten krijgt de ruimte ter beschikking, voor een aantal onder hen bieden we doorgedreven ondersteuning. STUK heeft alle knowhow voor een begeleiding van a tot z: inhoudelijk en dramaturgisch advies, productionele en technische ondersteuning, zakelijke omkadering, presentatiemogelijkheden, een internationaal netwerk en een nauwe band met de KU Leuven voor onderzoek.

E There’s also much taking place behind the scenes at STUK. Our residency for artists is perhaps the least visible to our visitors, when in fact this is the beating heart of our dance house. Everyday national and international artists are at work in the Ateliers, the Studio, the Labozaal and Soetezaal. Indeed, that STUK is an incredibly stimulating work environment is now an open secret: professional studios, technical and production teams thinking along with the artists, apartments just a stone’s throw from STUK and an artists’ kitchen providing a central meeting place.

Some of the artists come to develop a particular research project, while others are already further in their process, or in the last stages preparing for the premiere. Space is made available to a wide range of artists, a great number of whom are given extensive support. STUK has in-house expertise for this guidance from start to finish: in conceptual and dramaturgical advice, production and technical support, business approach, possibilities for presentation, as well as an international network, and close relationship with KU Leuven.

N Voor choreograaf Arco Renz is Zuidoost-­ Azië zijn tweede thuis. Europalia nodigde hem uit als gastcurator voor het festival met focus op Indonesië. Hij kent de diverse kunstscènes en in het bijzonder de danspraktijk van de eilandengroep van binnenuit en maakte samen met lokale curatoren de selectie voor het podiumprogramma van Europalia. STUK presenteert in dat kader twee voorstellingen van de Indonesische choreograaf Eko Supriyanto. Na zijn passage tijdens Monsoon 2010, is hij nu uitgegroeid tot een internationaal gerespecteerde choreograaf.

Acht beloftevolle kunstenaars uit Europa en Indonesië ontmoeten elkaar voor het eerst in Leuven. Twee weken lang gaan ze in de Studio op zoek naar de (on)mogelijkheid om samen te werken. Kunnen ze hun culturele achtergrond en persoonlijk perspectief rijmen met die van de ander? Op verschillende momenten kan je kennismaken met deze makers.

Op 14 december presenteren ze een mixed bill van eigen werk. Op 21 en 22 december kan je de resultaten van hun ontmoeting zien in een reeks blind dates.

E South East Asia is second home to choreographer Arco Renz. Europalia has invited him as guest curator for this year’s festival with a focus on Indonesia. He knows a great deal about the diverse art scenes, in particular the dance practices of the archipelago, and together with local curators he has selected a performance programme for Europalia. As part of this programme STUK presents two performances by the Indonesian choreographer Eko Supriyanto. Since his participation in the transcultural project Monsoon hosted

by STUK in 2010, Supriyanto has become an internationally respected choreographer.

Eight promising artists from Europe and Indonesia meet for the first time in Leuven.

For two weeks they will be in the studio looking for (im)possible ways of working together.

Can they find common ground between their different cultural backgrounds and personal perspectives? At various points during their collaboration you will have the opportunity to meet with these artists. On December 14th they will present a mixed bill from their own work.

On December 21st and 22nd you can see the results of their encounters that took form in a series of blind dates.

PRAKTISCHE INFORMATIE PRIJZEN Bij elke voorstelling vind je een basis- en een reductieprijs. Sommige voorstellingen hebben één enkele eenheidsprijs.

REDUCTIEFORMULES ABONNEMENTEN Klein abonnement (vanaf 5 voorstellingen) = reductieprijs Kies je uit het volledige aanbod minstens 5 betalende voorstellingen, dan geniet je van de reductieprijs.

Groot abonnement (vanaf 8 voorstellingen) = reductieprijs + 2 voorstellingen gratis Als je tickets koopt voor 8 (betalende) voorstellingen, krijg je er 2 voorstellingen gratis bovenop.

Dus 8 betalen = 10 voorstellingen. De 2 laagste prijzen van de 10 gekozen voorstellingen worden als gratis in de abonnementsprijs verrekend.

Indien je dit abonnement online wil bestellen: je bestelt 10 (of meer) voorstellingen aan kortingstarief en op het einde van het bestelproces worden de twee goedkoopste voorstellingen automatisch verrekend.

Uitbreidingsprijs Eens je abonnement op zak, kan je tijdens het seizoen bijkomende tickets altijd aan reductieprijs kopen. Online kan dat via een code die je meegestuurd krijgt met je bevestiging van het abonnement.

STUKKAART / CULTUURKAART KU LEUVEN Met de STUKkaart krijg je korting op zowat alles wat STUK organiseert. Ze kost €12 en is al na 3 voorstellingen terugverdiend. Studenten KU Leuven kunnen bij de inschrijvingen intekenen voor een Cultuurkaart KU Leuven, die gelijkgesteld is aan de STUKkaart. De STUKkaart is één jaar geldig en is persoonlijk (en moet dus getoond worden om korting te krijgen). Om van de reductieprijs te genieten moet je STUKkaart geldig zijn op het moment dat je betaalt. STUKkaarthouders kunnen ook online tickets kopen aan reductieprijs.

-18 JAAR Ook dit seizoen kunnen -18-jarigen voordelig naar STUK. Op die manier wil STUK het comfortabeler maken voor de cultuurminnende scholier om aan naar STUK te komen. Op vertoon van je identiteitskaart aan het STUK Onthaal krijg je je tickets aan gereduceerde prijs.

DUBBELDANS De Dubbeldanskorting is een korting voor twee aan elkaar gelinkte voorstellingen uit het Dubbeldansprogramma (STUK i.s.m. 30CC). Als je tickets voor beide voorstellingen van een bepaalde link koopt, krijg je de reductieprijs.

DANSPAS De danspas voor het seizoen 17-18 is te verkrijgen vanaf STUK START (27/09/17). Hij kost €5 is geldig vanaf 27/09/17 tot het einde van het seizoen (31/05/18). Ideaal dus om losse tickets tijdens het seizoen aan reductietarief te kopen.

Tijdens STUK START wordt de danspas gratis uitgedeeld.

UITPAS & CADEAUBONS STUK aanvaardt de UiTPAS voor mensen met een kansenstatuut voor dans- en concerttickets.

TICKETS ANNULEREN Tickets worden alleen terugbetaald wanneer een voorstelling afgelast wordt. Tickets ruilen kan wel, maar enkel voor dezelfde voorstelling op een andere datum. Hiervoor moet je de te ruilen ticket(s) meebrengen.

SCHOLEN Schoolgroepen (vanaf 10 leerlingen) genieten een bijzondere reductie maar kunnen maximum 20% van de totale zaalcapaciteit innemen. Meer info via het STUK Onthaal.

WACHTLIJSTEN Voor uitverkochte voorstellingen wordt een wachtlijst aangelegd. Vanaf 11:00 op de dag van de voorstelling kan je bellen en wordt je naam op de lijst geplaatst. Tien minuten voor aanvang wordt de wachtlijst afgeroepen. Je hebt geen garantie op een ticket maar het is het proberen waard. Opgelet: tickets via de wachtlijst kunnen enkel cash betaald worden.

LAATKOMERS Voorstellingen beginnen in de regel stipt.

Laatkomers kunnen jammer genoeg niet meer toegelaten worden. Ongebruikte tickets worden niet terugbetaald.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION PRICES Most performances have a standard price and a reduction price, some have one single price.

REDUCTION FORMULAS SEASON TICKET Season ticket (5 performances or more) = reduction price If you choose at least 5 paying performances from our programme, you get the reduction price.

Season ticket xl (8 performances or more) = 2 free performances If you buy tickets for 8 paying performances, you get 2 free performances on top. So pay 8 and get 10 performances.

The 2 lowest-price performances from the 10 you picked will be free of charge in your season ticket price. If you order your season ticket online, you choose your 10 (or more) performances. At the end of the session the two lowest price performances will be calculated as free.

Extra reduction With a season ticket, you can buy extra tickets for performances during that season at reduction price.

STUKCARD / KU LEUVEN CULTURE CARD The STUKcard gives you a discount on almost every event that is organized by STUK. At a price of €12, it’s paid back after about 3 performances. When registering, students from the KU Leuven can buy a Culture Card, which is put on a par with the STUK membership card. The STUK membership card is valid for one year, it is personal (and has to be shown in order to get a discount). In order to benefit from the reduced price your STUK membership card has to be valid at the time of payment. STUK membership card holders can also buy tickets online at the reduced price.

-18 Just like previous seasons, STUK offers a reduction for minors. That way, STUK wants to give culture-loving scholars easier access to STUK. Just show your ID card at STUK Box Office, and you’ll get tickets at reduction price.

DUBBELDANS The Dubbeldans reduction is valid for specific linked performances from the Dubbeldans programme (STUK with 30CC). If you buy tickets for both linked performances, you get the reduction price.

DANCE PASS The dance pass for the 17-18 season is available as of STUK START (27/09/17). It costs €5 and is valid from 27/09/17 until the end of the season (31/05/18), making it the ideal way to buy tickets at reduction rate throughout the season.

UITPAS & GIFT VOUCHERS STUK accepts the UiTPAS for people in poverty, to purchase dance and concert tickets. (Film tickets can only be bought at the tickets desk of STUK-­Vesalius, also for the films that are shown in STUK). STUK accepts gift vouchers of Stad Leuven and culture vouchers of Sodexho and Edenred.

SECTOR PASS OKO On showing your oKo season pass oKo 17-18, you get your tickets at reduction price.

TICKET CANCELLATIONS Tickets shall only be reimbursed when a performance is cancelled. Tickets can be exchanged, but only for the same performance at another date. Please bring the tickets to be exchanged if you wish to use this option.

SCHOOLS School groups (10 pupils and more) enjoy a special reduction, but can only take up 20% of the total capacity of the venue. More info at STUK Box Office.

WAITING LISTS A waiting list will be opened for performances that have sold out. Starting at 11:00 on the day of the performance, you can call STUK Box Office and ask for your name to be put on the list. The waiting list will be announced ten minutes before the start of the performance. You do not have any guarantee of obtaining a ticket but it is worth a try. Tickets bought through the waiting list have to be paid cash.

TOO LATE? As a rule performances start exactly at the time stated on the ticket. Once the performance has started, latecomers will not be admitted to the venue. Tickets that have been sold but were not used are not reimbursed.

30CC is en blijft je huis van vertrouwen. Ook in het seizoen 2017-2018 geniet je bij ons van het ruimste en meest gevarieerde aanbod aan podiumkunsten. Met gasten als BERLIN, Benjamin Verdonck, Kommil Foo, Tom Lanoye, De KOE, Tg STAN, Wim Helsen, Laura Van Dolron, Avishai Cohen, Jan Decorte, Dimitri Verhulst, Le Concert Olympique, Ballet Dommage … en vele anderen. Maar ook met prominente jazz & world, alle premières en de beste hernemingen van de Leuvense stadsgezelschappen, massa’s familievoorstellingen, een stevige ‘portie’ circus en zo veel meer.

We openen het seizoen met een groots feest voor de 150ste verjaardag voor onze Schouwburg (23-24 september 17) en gaan daarnaast ook helemaal in overdrive tijdens onze festivals: Zomer van Sint-Pieter (4 juli-31 augustus 17), The Sound of V (1 oktober 17), Rode Hond (28-31 oktober 17), Leuven Jazz (17-25 maart 18), Passie van de Stemmen (21-28 april 18) en CIRKL (18-21 mei 18).
