HUIS VOOR GELUID HOUSE FOR SOUND NL Als huis voor geluid zet STUK zijn schouders onder artiesten die muziek of klank op een avontuurlijke manier benaderen. Vanuit die missie ontstaat een divers programma: divers in aanpak, stijl of discipline, maar evenzeer divers in mensen.

Zo wil STUK een spiegel zijn van de samenleving van nu, los van gender, kleur en leeftijd. Klinkende namen als Caterina Barbieri, Lucrecia Dalt en Mary Lattimore zijn lichtende voorbeelden van een toenemende gendergelijkheid in de elektronische muziek.

Helado Negro klaagt met zijn latinodreampop raciale onderdrukking in zijn thuisland Amerika aan. Singersongwriter Beverly Glenn-Copeland vond op 75-jarige leeftijd eindelijk een publiek dankzij de heruitgave van zijn visionair album Keyboard Fantasies uit 1986.

Diversiteit spruit ook voort uit het ontmoeten van muzikale praktijken en culturen. Zo verrast keyboardspeler Rizan Said, de vaste rechterhand van Omar Souleyman, door Syrische melodieën te voorzien van opzwepende beats. Minimal componist Walter Hus experimenteert dan weer met een ouderwets Decap-orgel en elektronicatovenaar Milan W. ging op vraag van Europalia aan de slag met een traditioneel Roemeens ensemble. Nieuwe combinaties creëren nieuwe mogelijkheden.

Ook qua artistieke aanpak wil STUK een zo breed mogelijke waaier uitvouwen. Kunstenaars die de grenzen tussen disciplines aan hun laars lappen, staan al voor de derde keer centraal in Beyond Music, ons laboratorium voor geluidsperformances.

EN As a House for Sound, STUK supports artists who approach music and sound in adventurous ways. From this mission, a diverse programme is developed: diverse in approach, style or discipline, as well as in people – artists and their collaborators. In this way, STUK aims to reflect today’s society, diverse in gender, colour and age.

Well-known names such as Caterina Barbieri, Lucrecia Dalt and Mary Lattimore demonstrate an increasing gender equality in electronic music.

Through Latino dream pop, Helado Negro speaks out against racial oppression in his homeland of America. Singer-songwriter Beverly Glenn-Copeland finally found an audience at the age of 75 thanks to the re-release of his visionary album Keyboard Fantasies from 1986.

Diversity also arises from the amalgamation of different musical practices and cultures.

Keyboard player Rizan Said, the regular right hand of Omar Souleyman, surprises with his fresh mixes of Syrian melodies and stirring beats. Meanwhile, minimal composer Walter Hus conducts contemporary experimentations with an old-fashioned Decap organ, and electronics wizard Milan W. initiated a traditional Romanian ensemble at the request of Europalia. Fresh combinations bring about new possibilities.

With free cafe concerts and exhibits from LUCA School of Arts, STUK offers a podium for young creatives.

Decibels from our own soil are also plentiful with promising acts (Adriaan De Roover, BOLT RUIN), old STUK acquaintances (Hydrogen Sea, Hypochristmutreefuzz), and Leuven’s talents (Yusuf, Lingerwalt).
