INTRODUCTIE INTRODUCTION NL De coverfoto laat het je al vermoeden: het wordt een explosief najaar.

Het beeld is een fragment van Multiverse, een filmwerk van de Argentijnse kunstenaar Sebastián Díaz Morales die de solotentoonstelling dit najaar voor zijn rekening neemt. In zijn praktijk speelt Díaz Morales met tijd en ruimte en creëert zo andere realiteiten die moeiteloos naast de ‘feitelijke’ kunnen staan. Een reflectie op de kracht van de (film)camera als een apparaat dat de blik stuurt, is nooit veraf maar wordt ook regelmatig bewust doorbroken. Zo speelt Díaz Morales continu met in en uit, trekt hij je als bezoeker in zijn werk en katapulteert hij je te gepasten tijde weer terug in de ruimte. Multiverse is een van de werken uit de 8-delige reeks Talk With Dust (2018-2019) dat voor de allereerste keer in zijn geheel getoond wordt.

Daarnaast vind je van Díaz Morales doorheen het STUK-gebouw de reeks Pasajes; vijf films die in een labyrint van beelden een alternatieve kaart creëren van Buenos Aires, Jakarta, Patagonië en de Koepelgevangenis in Haarlem.

Voor haar solo in het STUKcafé zoomt Line Boogaerts in op verliefdheid als een explosie van lichaam en geest dat het kijken vertroebelt. Met die insteek verbindt Boogaerts op elegante wijze enkele fascinaties die centraal staan in haar praktijk – kijkvermogen, observatie, het venster – met de historiek van het STUK-gebouw als (o.a.) chemielaboratorium.

De term ‘explosief’ laat me toe om eveneens naadloos de brug te maken naar het Film Focusprogramma. Kathleen Collins’ film Losing Ground is een komisch drama waarin een filosofieprofessor ‘extase’ vanuit een puur rationeel perspectief probeert te onderzoeken, terwijl haar artistieke echtgenoot het aantrekkelijker

The image is a still from Multiverse, a film work by the Argentinian artist Sebastián Díaz Morales who will be presenting his solo exhibition this autumn. In his practice, Díaz Morales plays with time and space, creating alternate realities that nevertheless sit comfortably alongside the ‘factual’. Reflections on the power of the (film) camera, as a device directing the gaze, are always close at hand but also regularly, consciously broken. This is how Díaz Morales continually plays with in and out; as a visitor, he draws you into his work and at the appropriate moment catapults you back out into space. Multiverse is one of the works from the 8-part series Talk With Dust (2018-2019) that is being shown in its entirety for the very first time. You will also find Pasajes throughout the STUK building; five films that in a labyrinth of images create an alternative map of Buenos Aires, Jakarta, Patagonia, and the Dome Prison in Haarlem.

For her solo in STUKcafé, Line Boogaerts focuses in on love as an explosion of mind and body that obscures perception. With this approach, Boogaerts elegantly connects a number of fascinations that are central to her practice – the window, viewing ability, and observation – with the history of STUK’s building as (among other things) a chemical laboratory.

The term ‘explosive’ also allows me to make a seamless bridge to this autumn’s Film Focus programme. Kathleen Collins’s film Losing Ground is a comic drama in which a philosophy professor tries to investigate ‘ecstasy’ from a purely rational perspective, while her artistic husband is more drawn to pursuing its experience. The perfect film for STUK we

vindt om dat gevoel na te jagen. Een perfecte film voor STUK, leek ons. Daarnaast presenteren we graag twee pareltjes van The Otolith Group rond muzieklegendes Don Cherry en Julius Eastman die zowel de beeldende kunst- als de muziekliefhebber zullen bekoren.

Naast die speciale filmprogramma’s, blijft ZED-STUK (samen met ZEDVESALIUS) natuurlijk dé cinemalocatie voor de betere arthousefilm. Ook dit jaar landt het Internationaal Kortfimfestival begin december in de STUKzalen. Wie graag nog meer werk van Sebastián Díaz Morales ontdekt, kan terecht in de LABO-reeks – een programma vol experimentele kortfilms en -video’s die flink afwijken van de klassieke filmpaden.

Ik licht tot slot naar goede gewoonte alvast een tip op van de Artefact-sluier. In februari 2020 zal STUK in het teken staan van alleen-zijn [solitude] en verbondenheid [togetherness] onder de titel Alone Together. Maar voor het zover is verwelkomen we je samen met Museum M graag midden november op de 13 de editie van Playground.

And again this year, the International Short Film Festival is hosted at STUK in the beginning of December. Those who would like to discover more work

by Sebastián Díaz Morales can go to the LABO series – a programme full of experimental short films and videos that deviate considerably from the paths of classic film.

And finally, as is good tradition, a glimpse from beneath the Artefact veil: in February 2020, under the title Alone Together, STUK will be dedicated to exploring solitude and togetherness.

NL Enter Me is een bewegende installatie opgebouwd uit licht. Geïnspireerd door een foton, een lichtdeeltje dat continu in beweging is, nodigt het de bezoeker uit om in het licht te gaan staan en het van binnenuit te ervaren. De monotone en repetitieve bewegingen van het blauwe licht creëren een atmosfeer die inspelen op je gevoel van tijd en ruimte. Een persoonlijke, rustige plek om even stil te staan, terwijl de wereld verder draait.

NL Met twee majestueuze films biedt kunstenaar Sebastián Díaz Morales een voorsmaakje van zijn solotentoonstelling die op 16 oktober in STUK opent. Into a Silent World neemt ons mee naar een witte zandwoestijn waar een auto al spinnend cirkels in het zand tekent. In Sunrise staat een camera opgesteld tegen een achtergrond van de zee en de horizon.

Terwijl de camera statisch blijft, draait het landschap met de zon in de hoofdrol, 360 graden.

EN Enter Me is a light-kinetic installation inspired by the structure of a photon; a light particle that is in constant movement. The work invites the viewer to step into the light and experience it from the ‘inside’. The monotonous, repetitive movement of the blue light creates a contemplative atmosphere and transforms your experience of time and space.

It creates a personal zone, a quiet place to stand still for a moment, while the world keeps turning.

EN With two majestic film works artist Sebastián Díaz Morales offers a little taste of his solo exhibition at STUK opening on October 16, 2019. Into a Silent World takes us to a white earth desert. A car enters the plane and begins to spin, marking the smooth surface with disconnected, seemingly choreographed circles. Sunrise presents an image of a camera with the background of a sea and a horizon. While the camera remains still, the landscape turns 360 degrees with the sun taking a lead role.

NL STUK presenteert met trots het werk van de Sebastián Díaz Morales (°1975). In zijn werk creëert Díaz Morales dromerige filmische werelden die zich situeren tussen feit en fictie. Hij speelt met tijd en ruimte, wisselt een duidelijk narratief in voor ideeën en concepten en geeft zo ruimte aan associaties en interpretaties van de kijker. Zijn vaak expliciete verwijzingen naar de cameralens en point-ofview bevragen hoe we de wereld rondom ons zien, ervaren en begrijpen.

In deze solotentoonstelling presenteert Díaz Morales voor de eerste keer Talk with Dust (2018-2019). In een opeenvolging van projecties en schermen, toont Díaz Morales acht fragmenten of sequenties. De sequenties vormen zelf geen duidelijk narratief of plot. Er is geen verhaal, enkel individuele details, bewegingen, vormen en plaatsen die een atmosfeer creëren, een opeenvolging van verschillende moods en sensaties. Met dat gefragmenteerd geheel wil Díaz Morales het idee van het fantastische onderzoeken: ‘This fantastic is not the one that interrupts the ordinary course of things but rather that which is at once strange and present, at the same time its contradiction and its confirmation.

For something to be fantastic, it is not enough to be different from the real: also (and above all) it is necessary to mix inexplicably with the real thing.

In more philosophical terms we can say that the fantastic is not the other of the same but its alteration: not the contradiction of the real, but its subversion.’

EN STUK is delighted to present the work of visual artist Sebastián Díaz Morales (°1975). In his practice, Díaz Morales creates a quasi-magical visual realm focused on a subtle yet relentless questioning of our conceptions of reality.

He plays with time and space, exchanges narrative for ideas and concept, giving leeway to the associations and interpretations of the viewer. His often explicit references to the (film)camera, perspective and pointof-view question how we see, experience and understand the world around us.

For his solo exhibition, Díaz Morales will show for the first time his most recent work Talk with Dust (20182019) in its entirety. In a succession of projections and screens, Díaz Morales presents eight fragments or sequences.

The sequences in and of themselves do not constitute a straightforward narrative or plot. There is no story, only singular details, movements, shapes, sites that create an atmosphere, a succession of different sensations. Through his fragmented narrative, Sebastián Díaz Morales intends to explore an idea of the fantastic: ‘This fantastic is not the one that interrupts the ordinary course of things but rather that which is at once strange and present, at the same time its contradiction and its confirmation.

de term ‘uncanny’ zeer gepast aanvoelt om Talk With Dust te beschrijven. Het is precies het spel tussen dat wat gekend/ bekend lijkt maar tegelijkertijd niet volledig te (be)grijpen valt, dat een vruchtbare grond creëert voor het fantastische. De verschillende fragmenten in Talk With Dust genereren zowel fysieke als mentale plekken; ruimtes die dienstdoen als een spiegel waarop een beeld van onze wereld vorm kan krijgen.

Verspreid doorheen het STUKgebouw vervolledigt Pasajes de solotentoonstelling van Díaz Morales. In deze reeks wandelt een personage door ruimtes, klimt op trappen en doorkruist wegen en velden in een labyrint van wat normaal niet-geconnecteerde plaatsen zijn. De documentaire beelden vormen zo een alternatieve kaart van Buenos Aires (Pasajes I & II), Jakarta (Pasajes III), Patagonië (Pasajes IV) en de Koepelgevangenis in Haarlem (Pasajes V).

Given the above understanding of the fantastic, it comes as no surprise that also the term ‘uncanny’ seems quite apt to describe one’s sensation in relation to Talk With Dust. It is precisely the interplay between that which looks familiar, but seems at the same time beyond reach, is beyond our understanding, that generates this fruitful ground for the fantastic to flourish. The sequences in Talk With Dust present both material as well as mental territories, spaces which function as a mirror upon which an image of our world can surface.

Throughout the STUK building, a second series of works titled Pasajes completes Díaz Morales’ solo show. In this series, a character is seen walking through gateways and doors, up stairs and across roads, navigating a labyrinth of otherwise spatially disconnected places. Walking along with this protagonist, the seemingly documentary style visuals are turned into an alternative map of Buenos Aires (Pasajes I & II), Jakarta (Pasajes III), Patagonia (Pasajes IV), and the Koepelgevangenis/prison Haarlem (Pasajes V).

Een venster geeft inzicht en uitzicht. Kijken betekent zien wat je wil zien of verwacht te zien en wordt bepaald door je achtergrond, je herinneringen, het venster waardoor je kijkt …

NL Line Boogaerts is een beeldend kunstenaar gefascineerd door de manier waarop we de realiteit begrijpen. In haar praktijk onderzoekt ze hoe onze kijkervaring, onze perceptie steeds geconstrueerd is. Haar werk wordt grotendeels gestuurd door de creatie van tijdelijke tekeningen op ramen aan de hand van borstel, vegers, gekleurde olie en zeep. Noodzakelijkerwijze site-specific, interageren haar werken vaak met de historische, sociale en/of psychologische contexten van een architecturale ruimte.

In deze tentoonstelling speelt Boogaerts in op het verleden van het gebouw en de chemische processen die in het voormalige scheikundelaboratorium plaatsvonden. Verwijzend naar wolken en explosies verbeeldt ze hoe verliefdheid je perceptie verandert en de werkelijkheid in een ander (dag)licht plaatst.

In haar nieuwe film Diffuse Light speelt Boogaerts zowel met contrast als associatie; beelden van een ‘cleane’, gecontroleerde laboratoriumsetting worden tegenover de spontane, organische natuur geplaatst. Twee schijnbaar totaal verschillende werelden lijmt Boogaerts zo aan elkaar in een reflectie op wat verliefdheid met je doet. Op negen glasplaatjes combineert Boogaerts daarnaast fotografische elementen (o.a. van de voormalige chemielokalen in STUK) met eigen hyper gedetailleerde tekeningen. Hoe kan een wetenschappelijke benadering van verliefdheid naast een gevoelsmatige

13 EN Line Boogaerts is a Belgian visual artist fascinated by the way in which we understand reality. In her practice, she investigates how our experience of looking, our perception, is always constructed. Her work largely revolves around the creation of temporary drawings on windows with brushes, window wipers, tinted oil and soap.

Necessarily site-specific, her works often interact with the historical, social and/or psychological contexts of a given architectural space.

The title of this exhibition, Flashlight Equipment refers to clouds and explosions. With the historical use of the building as a chemistry lab in mind, Boogaerts imagines and visualizes how falling in love changes our perception, putting everything in a different light.

In her new film Diffuse Light, Boogaerts plays both with contrast as well as association; images of a ‘clean’, controlled laboratory setting are juxtaposed with images of a ‘spontaneous’, organic nature. Two seemingly completely different worlds are glued together in a reflection on the effects of being in love. Boogaerts furthermore combines photographic elements (of a.o. the former chemistry labs in STUK before it was transformed into an arts center) with hyper-detailed drawings on nine glass plates – the precursor to the diaslide. How can a scientific approach to being in love exist alongside a sensory one? We know that being in love sets in motion certain chemical processes in the body, but what do you do with this knowledge?

And does it explain the change in perception of a person in love? In Reflected Light Boogaerts created lifesize cut-out figures to further explore and reflect upon how being in love can

staan? Dat verliefdheid bepaalde chemische stoffen vrijmaakt in het lichaam is bekend. Maar wat doe je met die kennis en verklaart dat ook waarom de perceptie van een verliefd persoon wijzigt? In Reflected Light toont Boogaerts levensgrote uitgeknipte figuren waarmee ze onderzoekt hoe verliefdheid je blik kan belemmeren, hoe zowel die andere als de wereld vertroebelen en hoe in die gekleurde blik, een ideale versmelting ontstaat in de andere. SWATTED

NL Cinema ZED staat garant voor een cinefiel programma met o.m. recente releases, documentaires, jeugdfilms, wereldcinema, filmklassiekers en kortfilmcompilaties afgewisseld met festivals en evenementen. Je kan Cinema ZED terugvinden op twee locaties: in STUK en op de Vesaliussite.

Van 30 november tot 7 december strijkt het Internationaal Kortfilmfestival (IKL) in STUK neer. Een week lang krijg je de meest uitgekiende selectie wereldwijd voorgeschoteld. Kijk zeker naar de LABO-reeks, de verzamelnaam voor compilaties vol verrassende, doorgaans non-narratieve films en video’s die spelen met het medium, crossovers maken met andere (kunst)disciplines en flink afwijken van de klassieke filmpaden. Zo beschrijven online spelers in Swatted het levensbedreigend fenomeen van cyberpesten, beter bekend als ‘swatting’.

EN Cinema ZED presents an art-house programme with new releases, documentaries, films for young audiences, world cinema, film classics and short film compilations, intersected with festivals and special events. Cinema ZED screens its films on two locations: in STUK and in Vesalius.

From 30 November to 7 December the International Short Film Festival takes over STUK, offering a full week of the best short films from all over the world. Don’t miss the LABO series: compilations of surprising, often non-narrative films and videos that play with the medium, make crossovers with other (art) disciplines and don’t follow film’s beaten paths. In Swatted online players describe their struggles with ‘swatting’, a life-threatening cyber-harassment phenomenon while they play.

KATHLEEN COLLINS — LOSING GROUND NL Losing Ground, door Kathleen Collins (1942­-1988) zelf beschreven als een komisch drama over een jonge vrouw die zichzelf te serieus neemt, was één van de eerste langspeelfilms van een onafhankelijke Afro­-Amerikaanse filmmaakster. Het hoofdpersonage Sara – vertolkt door Seret Scott in een rol gebaseerd op Collins’ eigen ervaringen – is een filosofieprofessor die ‘extase’ vanuit een puur rationeel perspectief probeert te onderzoeken, terwijl haar artistieke echtgenoot (Bill Gunn) het aantrekkelijker vindt om dat gevoel na te jagen. Sara gaat helemaal op in de westerse filosofie, maar ironisch genoeg worden de beperkingen van haar leven duidelijk door haar betrokkenheid in de zwarte volkscultuur. Deze gevatte en scherpzinnige studie van het emotionele ontwaken van een vrouw in een gekweld huwelijk ent zich op het werk van Eric Rohmer, die Collins omschreef als ‘de enige persoon die me filmisch heeft beïnvloed’.

De film werd koel onthaald. Producenten, verdelers en critici reageerden onverschillig en hadden het vooral over de thema’s die niet aan bod kwamen: armoede, geweld of zoals cameraman Ronald K. Gray het uitdrukte ‘poor suffering black folk’. Nu herontdekt en heruitge­bracht voelt Losing Ground ‘als nieuws, als een bulletin uit een vitale en vooralsnog onontgonnen dimensie van de werkelijkheid.’

EN Characterized by Kathleen Collins (1942­-1988) as a comic drama about a young woman who takes herself too seriously, Losing Ground was one of the first feature films by an independent African­-American woman filmmaker. Her protagonist Sara (played by longtime collaborator Seret Scott in a role based on Collins’s own experiences) is a professor of philosophy who tries to examine ‘ecstasy’ from a purely rational perspective, while her artist­-husband (Bill Gunn) finds it more interesting to pursue ecstasy. A rare breed, Sara is immersed in the philosophy of Western civilization, but ironically the limitations of her life are illuminated by her involvement in black folk culture. Highly influenced by the work of Eric Rohmer, whom she described as ‘the only person who’s ever influenced me cinematically’, Losing Ground is a witty, perceptive study of the emotional awakening of a woman in a troubled marriage.

At its release, the film was met with cold indifference from producers, distributors and critics, as it didn’t feature poverty, gangs, or as cinematographer Ronald K. Gray put it, ‘poor suffering black folk.’

Rediscovered, restored, and finally released to much acclaim in 2015, Losing Ground now ‘feels like news, like a bulletin from a vital and as­-yet-­unexplored dimension of reality’ (A. O. Scott, The New York Times).

THE OTOLITH GROUP — PEOPLE TO BE RESEMBLING & THE THIRD PART OF THE THIRD MEASURE NL Een avond met adembenemende films van The Otolith Group (Anjalika Sagar en Kodwo Eshun) over twee voorname figuren uit de avant-gardemuziek: Don Cherry en Julius Eastman.

People to be Resembling kan beschreven worden als een vijfzijdig portret van het post-free jazz, pre-wereldmuziek trio Codona, opgericht in 1978 door Collin Walcott, Don Cherry en Nana Vasconcelos. De film keert terug naar 1978 om het opnameproces in de Tonstudio Bauer te herbeleven; een meditatie over de relatie tussen visuele antropologie, antikoloniale choreografie, nucleaire vernietiging en wereldmuziek.

EN An evening with breathtaking essay films by The Otolith Group (Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun) on two major figures of avant-garde music: Don Cherry and Julius Eastman.

People to be Resembling can be described as a five sided portrait of the methodologies of the post-free jazz, preworld music trio Codona, founded by multi-instrumentalists Collin Walcott, Don Cherry, and Nana Vasconcelos in 1978. The film returns to 1978 in order to redream the recording process at Tonstudio Bauer as a meditation upon the relations between visual anthropology, anti-colonial choreography, nuclear annihilation and Weltmusik.

Julius Eastman, the queer AfricanAmerican avant-garde composer, pianist, vocalist and conductor wrote and performed compositions whose ecstatic militant minimalism initiated a black radical aesthetic. In 1980, Eastman was invited to present his compositions Crazy Nigger (1978) Evil Nigger (1979) and Gay Guerrilla (1979). After objection to these titles, they were redacted from the concert programme. Eastman responded with a public statement. The speeches delivered

NL De mallemolen is een volledig uit hout gemaakte carrousel met dieren waarop acht kinderen tegelijk kunnen plaatsnemen voor een aantal rondjes onvervalst draaimolenplezier.

Tot de (groot)ouders moe zijn, want zij doen deze volledig energieneutrale manège draaien.

De mallemolen kan je ontdekken op het STUK binnenplein in het kader van RODE HOND, een besmettelijk kunstenfestival voor families.

EN The merry-go-round is a carousel made entirely of wood with animals, on which eight children can take a seat simultaneously for a number of rounds of pure merry-go-round fun.

NL Playground #13 selecteert unieke performances van kunstenaars die over de disciplines heen denken. Zij combineren elementen uit installatie, tekst, film, sculptuur of choreografie. Ze brengen spannende performances in het veld tussen podium en beeldende kunst en creëren nieuwe beelden die reflecteren over kunst en wereld. Al enige tijd is de interesse van de beeldende kunst wereld voor performance enorm toegenomen.

I.s.m. museum M speelt Playground hier op in. We stellen hier vier projecten voor:

Met twee performers en haar eigen wolproductie van één jaar stelt Orla Barry – schaapherder èn kunstenaar- in Breaking Rainbows onze complexe verhouding met de natuur aan de kaak. Van verhalen op een schapenboerderij over pastorale zangwedstrijden tot ecologische vraagstukken.

De performance is opgebouwd met toeval, taal, humor én wanhoop voor de richting waarin we de wereld sturen.

EN Playground #13 selects unique performances by artists that think and work across disciplines. Their practices consist of a combination of installation, text, film, sculpture, or choreography. They compose cutting-edge performances in the overlap between stage and visual arts, and create new imagery reflecting upon art and the world. Interest in the visual arts within the performing arts has been growing for quite some time. In collaboration with museum M, Playground delves into this. We present four projects:

With two performers and her own wool production of one year, Orla Barry – shepherd and artist – exposes our complex relationship with nature in Breaking Rainbows. From the stories of a sheep farm, to pastoral singing competitions, to current ecological concerns.

Suchan Kinoshita verwerkt een herinnering in haar nieuwe performance PLATZhalter takingPLACE surPLACE. Jaren geleden wilde Kinoshita naar een uitverkochte voorstelling. Stiekem ging ze een uurtje voor de voorstelling via de backstage naar binnen. Stilletjes zat ze in de zaal.

Een kuisvrouw begon de stoelen te poetsen. Tegelijkertijd sprongen de lichtstanden van het eerste bedrijf aan. De poetsvrouw werkte verder tot ze bij Kinoshita kwam. En of ze wel een ticket had? Maar dat was niet meer nodig, want Kinoshita had de ideale ‘platzhalter’ gezien …

Béatrice Balcou introduceert met haar ceremonies een verstilde aandacht voor kunst als reactie op de snelheid van de consumptiemaatschappij. Door het langzaam onthullen, kijken en contextualiseren van één enkel kunstwerk uit de collectie van M, nodigt de kunstenares ons uit om tijd te nemen tijdens Untitled Ceremony.

Enkele jaren geleden leerde Hana Miletić de sociale weefateliers in Brussel kennen. Ze knoopte er opnieuw aan bij een ambacht dat ze kende uit haar jeugd in Joegoslavië. Samen met een groep vrouwen van het open kunstenhuis Globe Aroma, leert Hana Miletić je in haar Viltatelier de techniek van ‘nat vilten’.

Tussen verhalen en techniek, voelen en denken, creëer je mee de nieuwe werken die daarna in M te zien zijn.

Suchan Kinoshita builds upon a personal memory in her new performance PLATZhalter takingPLACE surPLACE. Years ago, she’d wanted to attend a sold-out performance. An hour before the play started she secretly snuck in via the backstage.

She sat quietly in the auditorium.

A cleaning lady started sweeping between the seats. Simultaneously, the stage lights from the first act were switched on. The cleaning lady continued until she came to Kinoshita. She asked if she had a ticket, but it was no longer necessary: Kinoshita had seen the ideal platzhalter.

In the form of ceremonies, Béatrice Balcou introduces a stilled and thoughtful attention for art in response to the fast pace of our consumer society. By slowly revealing, looking at and contextualising a single artwork of the M collection, the artist invites us to take pause during the Untitled Ceremony.

A few years ago, Hana Miletić came to hear about the social weaving workshops in Brussels. This sparked her to take up the craft she knew from her childhood in Yugoslavia. Together with a group of women from the open-air arts house Globe Aroma, Hana Miletić teaches you the technique of ‘wet felting’ in her Felt Workshop, a craft with a household tradition. Between stories and technology, feeling and thinking, you help create new works that will be presented at M.

NL Artefact is een tentoonstelling en festival waarin hedendaagse kunst, actualiteit en maatschappelijke uitdagingen centraal staan.

Onder de titel Alone Together focust Artefact in 2020 op ideeën rond de betekenis van ‘alleen-zijn’ en ‘samen-zijn’ in de huidige samenleving. De expo tracht te kijken naar vragen als: Wat betekent ‘alleen zijn’? Hoe verhoudt het zich tot eenzaamheid? Kunnen we eenzaamheid i.p.v. vanuit een individueel standpunt ook bekijken vanuit meer structurele (sociale, culturele, economische, technologische, architecturale) krachten?

Hoe verbinden we ons met elkaar? Wat is de kwaliteit van onze interpersoonlijke relaties en welke rol spelen sociale media en andere communicatietechnologieën daarbij? De kunstwerken proberen een licht te werpen op deze soms gevoelige vragen. Hoewel mogelijks confronterend, hopen we met Alone Toghether ook troost te kunnen bieden.

23 EN In February 2020, Artefact: the exhibition and festival focusing on contemporary art, current events, and societal challenges, will zoom in on ideas of solitude and togetherness in contemporary society.

Under the title Alone Together, the exhibition aims to look into questions such as: What does contemporary solitude mean? How does it relate to feelings of loneliness? Can we consider loneliness not in individual terms, but as the result of more structural forces be they social, cultural, economic, technological or architectural in nature? How do we connect in today’s society? What is the quality of our interactions/connection, and which role do (social and communication) technologies play in this? The exhibition aims to shed light on these questions, and while potentially confronting, it hopes to also offer some consolation through the fact that we are many.

KATHLEEN COLLINS

°1942-1988, JERSEY CITY, US

NL Kathleen Collins was een van de eerste AfroAmerikaanse theatermakers en filmregisseurs. Geboren en opgegroeid in Jersey City, en opgeleid aan Skidmore en de Sorbonne, was ze een activiste bij SNCC tijdens de burgerrechtenbeweging in de jaren 1950 en 1960. Collins was professor filmgeschiedenis aan City College in New York. Ze was tevens lerares Frans, een gevestigd

toneelschrijfster, redacteur en auteur, en onafhankelijk filmmaker. Haar meest bekende werk is de film Losing Ground, gevolgd door twee theaterstukken, In the Midnight Hour, en The Brothers. Een nooit eerder uitgegeven verzameling kortverhalen Whatever Happened to Interracial Love? werd in 2016 gepubliceerd door Ecco Press. Collins stierf jong, op 46-jarige leeftijd, aan borstkanker. De heropleving van haar oeuvre is grotendeels te danken aan haar dochter, Nina Collins, zonder wie het gros van haar werk nog steeds verborgen zou zijn gebleven.

The revival of her corpus is largely due to her daughter, Nina Collins, without whom most of Collins’s work might still be unrecovered, facing near-disappearance.
